Culture Eats Strategy for Breakfast… I think we’ve all heard this quote before as it relates to the values and behavior of an organization. It simply doesn’t matter how much strategic planning takes place if the employees cannot function as a team. As our resident Marketing Director says, “Teamwork makes the dream work!” A lot of things go into teamwork but a large part can be boiled down to how and when we communicate. If the channels of communication are open, free, respectful, and timely, then everyone feels involved in the organization and their opinion matters. Now that the current election season is over and we are fully involved with the holidays, my hope is that we return to The Woodlands where community matters. Incorporation was a contentious issue and large community decisions like this do not have to be. As we move forward, I encourage everyone to remember we live in the same community and, for the most part, want the same things. Let’s take the time, communicate, and work together to resolve any major differences that might be roadblocks before we have to go to the ballot box. It’s The Woodlands. We are a national example of how to do ‘community’ the right way.

with theChairman
Q: How did you become involved in the Chamber of Commerce? A: I began attending Chamber events a few years after assuming the Head of School position at The Woodlands Christian Academy
in 2006. Having addressed some serious financial challenges at the school, I got involved with local organizations such as the Rotary Club of The Woodlands, Leadership Montgomery County and The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce to build community relationships and awareness for The Woodlands Christian Academy.
Q: Why is The Woodlands Area Chamber an important piece of the community? A: Our thriving community was built upon strong partnerships between government entities, businesses and residents. The
Chamber, representing over 1,200 businesses and their employees, is the largest such organization in the greater Houston area based on membership. It brings leaders together to dialogue and support a strong local economy while planning for a prosperous future. Essentially, our Chamber offers a pathway to opportunity by advocating for the business community, creating marketing and networking opportunities, serving as a professional and community resource, and supporting local nonprofits.
Q: What are The Chamber Board of Directors’ general responsibilities? A: The Chamber Board of Directors includes 27 members who meet regularly and represent diverse local industries and businesses of all sizes. Our primary responsibility is to serve our members well. We do this by making sure the Chamber is financially strong and always pursuing our primary mission while adhering to our core values.
Q: When did you become Vice President of Legendary Leadership for the Chamber board, and what did that role entail? A: I served as the Vice President of Legendary Leadership for three years from 2017–2020. In this role, I served as the liaison to the board for the Chamber staff, team leads and volunteers to plan the annual awards ceremony and leadership retreat as well as to support the past presidents and young professionals.
Q: How did your time as board of directors Vice Chairman prepare you for the role of Chairman, and what are some of the distinct duties between those two positions? A: As Vice Chairman, I had the privilege of supporting and learning from my friend, the amazing Linda Nelson, while she served as
Chairman. I also had the opportunity to work closely with JJ Hollie and the Chamber staff to see the wonderful work they do every day to serve our members well. I prepared for my season as Chairman by learning the organization better and understanding any issues we might need to address. The Chairman has a more visible role than the Vice Chairman and must be prepared to speak on behalf of the Chamber when necessary, such as when the Chamber board passes resolutions on issues that will affect its membership.
Q: What are your goals for The Chamber as its new Chairman? A: The last 18 months have been challenging for all of us. Covid-19, politics and the economy have left many of us feeling fearful
and isolated. My first goal is to bring our membership back together in person for all events. We need each other, and we need to rebuild unity in our community. We don’t have to agree on everything, but we can agree that the best solutions happen when people work together. The Chamber is the ideal organization to host healthy conversations and rebuild strong partnerships in the greater Woodlands area.
Q: How would you describe The Woodlands Business Community? A: The Woodlands business community is vibrant and strong. It provides the resources, the support base and the employment that
make this area so attractive for residents. We enjoy increasing diversity of industries, high-paying jobs and support services such as world-class medical care and a wide range of restaurant and retail choices.
Q: How has The Woodlands Area changed since you began working in the area? A: I moved to The Woodlands in 1995 when the population was about 32,000, and I had to commute an hour each way to work in
Houston. The mall had opened in 1994, and we were mostly a suburb. Today, we have a population in the greater Woodlands Area of 250,000 with more people driving into The Woodlands to work than leaving. The Woodlands has become a major employment center and a destination for businesses, visitors and residents from around the world.
Q: What new changes or challenges do you anticipate could affect the business community over the next year? A: This area is growing rapidly. Newcomers bring new ideas and expectations but may not appreciate the history and unique
relationships that have made our community so special. If we are to continue enjoying our quality of life in an area that Niche named the #1 best city to live in America, we need to make sure everyone is fully informed about issues such as our current government structures, incorporation, transportation and water. Redistricting and critical elections over this next year could have a profound impact on the future of The Woodlands area. 4

Chamber C.A.R.E.S. Committee supports Cassidy Joined for Hope Foundation - Hope for the Holidays
T
is the season for HOPE, Peace, Joy and live entertainment! The Holiday Variety Christmas Production will benefit the Cassidy Joined For Hope Foundation on Saturday, December 4th at College Park High School. Attendees will be entertained by Montgomery County’s finest, talented singers, actors, and dancers as they perform favorite Christmas carols along with a few fabulous surprises!
Since teen suicide impacts us all on some level, they have designed this production to have the “handprint” of Montgomery County. The production will offer two showings on Saturday, December 4th at 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. All proceeds go toward the CJH Foundation’s mission, “breaking the silence”. When you attend, you play an integral part in supporting that nourish the cast and crew. We mission. HOPE you will consider joining us as we support Cassidy Joined For The C.A.R.E.S. Committee appreciates that all these talented participants are donating Hope Foundation. their time and talent to put on this production, and we will be providing meals to help The C.A.R.E.S. Volunteers Needed to Encourage “Solutions through Science” Education for Tomorrow Alliance, Conroe ISD, and area private schools will be kicking off the 32nd Annual SCI:// TECH Exposition, themed Solutions through Science, in January 2022. SCI://TECH offers 13 STEM events over several weekends to encourage thousands of K-12 students to explore scientific principles. SCI://TECH activities engage hundreds of volunteers from the business community in support of education. A 2022 highlight will be the Chevron Phillips Chemical Co.
Senior High and Entergy Junior High Science Fairs where students compete for awards and the chance to participate in the Science and Engineering Fair of Houston. Science fair activities are planned for Thursday, January 27 at the Lone Star Convention Center in Conroe. Volunteers are needed for three time slots during the day including 7:45 am, 9:30 am, and 2:00 pm, and will have the chance to review and rank student projects. No experience is needed, and training will be provided on site. EfTA Program Director, Corinne Coulter shared, “After a virtual 2021 fair, we are grateful to give students the chance to learn from in-person engagement. In addition to learning about research and long-term planning, students will get to practice their presentation skills. Leadership Montgomery County Hosts Class of 2022 Infrastructure Session Leadership Montgomery County (LMC) hosted their Infrastructure Session for the LMC Class of 2022 on October 14 at the San Jacinto River Authority (SJRA). The session, sponsored by Entergy Texas, was the first of eight educational sessions for the class. Class members spent the day learning about various aspects of the county’s infrastructure. Infrastructure Session Director Erich Peterson presented an introduction to infrastructure to begin the day. The class then heard from Jace Houston, Jason Williams, and Bret Raley from the San Jacinto River Authority. The class toured the SJRA Surface Water Plant before returning for more speakers. The class learned about power utilities in the county and region from Stuart Barrett of Entergy Texas. The class also learned about roads in
the county from Montgomery County Precinct 2 Commissioner Charlie Riley. The day ended with a tour of MUD No. 3 Wastewater Treatment Plant.
Leadership Montgomery County (LMC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, dedicated to developing and enhancing current and future leaders of Montgomery County. The mission of LMC is to prepare emerging and existing leaders to understand local issues, grow their leadership skills and connect with others to better serve Montgomery County. The Conroe/Lake Conroe Chamber of Commerce, The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce, the Greater Magnolia Parkway Chamber of Commerce, the Greater East Montgomery County Chamber, the Montgomery County Hispanic Chamber, and the Montgomery Area Chamber are all partner chambers in the LMC program.
