CELEBRATING 40 YEARS OF PRO-BUSINESS ADVOCACY! When business leaders established The South Montgomery County Woodlands Chamber of Commerce in 1978, they set out to create an environment where companies could thrive and create jobs, transforming South Montgomery County from mostly residential into a self-sustaining community offering not only superior quality of life but also a multitude of employment opportunities. Today, The Chamber, formally known as The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce, is a volunteer-driven group governed by 21 elected board members representing more than 1,500 businesses. For 40 years, The Chamber has served as a means to link business and community for the betterment of the greater Houston region. During this time, countless staff and volunteers have worked to provide leadership and vision to expand The Woodlands area into a community that consistently ranks among the best in the nation. As we celebrate four decades of business leadership, we look back proudly at the achievements made in the area since 1978 and recognize the many individuals whose commitment and vision have made our community what it is today. We invite you to celebrate some of those individuals at The Chamber’s 40th Annual Chairman’s Ball on August 18 and the 40th Annual Meeting and Awards Luncheon on September 21. On August 18, we will honor Frank Holmes of Sam Houston State University, thanking him for his dedicated service as the 2017-18 Chairman of the Board. The lavish black-tie celebration, themed “Star Wars: May the Force Be With You and Beyond,” promises to be an out-of-this-world evening with a tribute to the past 40 years as well as a celebration of the present with an exceptional meal, dancing and music. The 40th Annual Chairman’s Ball is from 6 p.m. to midnight at The Woodlands Waterway Marriott Hotel & Convention Center. Individual tickets are $150 and $1,250 for a table of 10. On September 21, we will announce the 2018 Chamber Volunteer of the Year, Citizen of the Year and Diplomat of the Year at the 40th Annual Meeting and Awards Luncheon. The event is from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at The Holiday Inn & Suites - Shenandoah. Tickets are $50 for members, $75 for non-members and $500 for a table of 10. Business Advocacy Council Update

The Business Advocacy Council (BAC) stayed busy this summer updating their legislative priorities for the upcoming 2019 Texas Legislative Session.

Transportation, funding, alternative mobility options, economic development incentives, cultural arts and mental health policies were among the many issues discussed to inform The Chamber’s 2019 legislative priorities that will be submitted to the Chamber Board of Directors.

The council hosted six planning meetings over a three-month period to gather input from Chamber members on what is important to their business. The meetings were industry-based and included the following: Economic Development and Tourism, Transportation, Health Care, Utilities and Natural Resources, Education and Workforce, and Financial Services and Elections.

t has been 40 exciting and vibrant years for The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce and a distinct honor for me to serve as chairman during this significant anniversary year. It is hard to believe that our chamber has become the second largest in the Houston metro area in such a relatively short time.

Unique and engaging programs that benefit members and contribute to our community’s tremendous development characterize our growth. As chairman, I had a special opportunity to learn more about what makes our chamber successful, and without a doubt, it is the dedicated persons, who conduct the planning, make arrangements, interact with community leaders, attend meetings, and help to execute schedules and events.

I remain impressed by the manner in which our great staff and outstanding board worked closely together to provide exceptional management and stewardship of the chamber’s valuable resources during the year, thus strengthening the organization’s financial position. Looking toward the future, a group of chamber leaders and staff spent numerous hours developing the foundation for a strategic plan that will serve as a guide to becoming even more responsive to the needs and wants of its current and prospective members. A twoday retreat in June followed where leaders heard and discussed an exciting presentation on ways to make the chamber more engaging and to improve membership retention. The board also addressed important organizational structure and governance issues, which included bylaw revisions that provided for an executive committee and the creation of a new vice chairman position, which will be the chairman-elect.

Although this chamber is extremely busy managing day-to-day activities, continuous improvement efforts are always at the forefront of discussion and planning. Leadership remains committed to adapting and making positive changes that will address the needs and aspirations of The Woodlands. After following two chamber Frank Holmes executives of near legendary stature, our president and CEO, JJ Hollie, completed his third year, demonstrating a clear vision of the contemporary challenges facing chambers of commerce nationwide. He is committed to working with his board, volunteers, business and governmental leaders, and the larger community to continue to build on the legacy of 40 great years. I thank you for supporting The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce and for the extraordinary opportunity to serve as chairman of the board. I am grateful to my predecessor, Linda Head, and for my successor, Stuart Lapp, for their leadership and assistance. I also appreciate the great people at Sam Houston State University being so wonderfully supportive during my year as chairman.

The Future is Bright! A Message from The Chamber’s EfTA Intern:

Hello! My name is Sarah Joshi, and I am a rising senior at The Woodlands High School. I am interested in business and hope to attend Texas A&M University. I had the pleasure of serving as an intern for The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce these past two weeks. Prior to interning with The Chamber, I had very little knowledge about how an organization like it functions. During this time, I had the opportunity to shadow many different individuals of The Chamber’s staff and really learn the ins and outs of the nonprofit business world. I attended meetings, made calls, and even got to network with business owners around The Woodlands. The people I got to work with really showed me what it means to work for something you really have a passion for. In addition to learning about The Chamber, I also discovered how a township works and what makes The Woodlands so unique. I learned that teamwork is essential to get anything done. I learned that working for a nonprofit like The Chamber is not your typical 9-5 job. It’s even better! You get to interact with innovative individuals and help them achieve their business goals.

Most importantly, however cliché it might sound, I learned that there is no straight path to success and that you’ll often have to jump through various hurdles to achieve it. I’m incredibly thankful to Education for Tomorrow Alliance (EFTA) and The Chamber for providing me with such an opportunity. I will continue to cherish the memories and the lessons I’ve learned for a long time.

Student Internship Program

Continues to Shape Future Professionals

S

ince its beginning, Education for Tomorrow Alliance has been partnering with businesses around Montgomery County and beyond to support high school students through the Student Internship Program. This year, EfTA placed 118 rising seniors in professional internships. Students pick a two-week period in June or July and benefit from 80 hours of professional mentoring and shadowing in fields of their choosing. On Tuesday, June 26, Education for Tomorrow Alliance board and staff celebrated the student interns and their business mentors at the SIP summer luncheon sponsored by Sam Houston State University. TEAMS IN ACTION community relations team /BE A GOOD SAMARITAN PROJECT The Community Relations Team (CRT) recently partnered with the Crisis Assistance Center for their “Be A Good Samaritan” Donation Drive for the Homeless.

Through the month of June, the team collected donations such as travel size personal hygiene products, non-perishable food items with pull tops, drawstring backpacks and other personal care items like wet wipes. The Crisis Assistance Center (CAC) is a source of hope for Montgomery County residents experiencing a financial crisis in basic needs of housing, utilities, food and clothing. Their care approach provides support and assistance. Through a partnership of programs, CAC is able to help families help themselves. CRT hosts a project supporting a nonprofit chamber member every month. If you or your business

EDUCATION The Dispute Resolution Center of Montgomery County’s 2018 Conflict Resolution Day Bookmark Art Contest is open to all students grades K-8th enrolled in county schools. Twenty-two judges will be chosen from various organizations to review artwork submitted that shows alternatives to violence and bullying in a creative manner and 16,000 copies of the winning bookmarks will be distributed throughout the county.
