PROJECTED REVENUE LOSS: $7 MILLION ONE YEAR AGO, the global pandemic gripped our world. On March 12, 2020, we closed our doors to our community out of precaution to protect the health of those we care about most: our guests, our staff and all of the animals who call the zoo home. While this closure was necessary, it was devastating to our zoo, with our earned revenue coming to a complete halt. With a projected revenue loss of nearly $7 million, 2020 became one of the most challenging years in our 120-year history.

TO PROTECT JOBS, we cut approximately $6M in non-payroll expenses, implemented executive pay reductions in April and froze all open positions for an additional savings of $1.5M. Despite these efforts, we laid off or furloughed 23% of our staff in July, which was heartbreaking for everyone.

THE ROAD TO RECOVERY AS 2021 AND THE GLOBAL PANDEMIC CONTINUES, we will enter a new phase of rebuilding, with you at the heart of it. As Woodland Park Zoo rebuilds, we are thinking with equal care about what animals and people most need. Washington’s communities and families have shown immense resilience during the past year. The zoo provides a place of healing and hope, a respite and a source of inspiration. You reinforce our role as a pillar of our greater community’s overall recovery. WE ARE MORE GRATEFUL THAN EVER for our community’s deep care for the animals who live at Woodland Park Zoo. Thank you for being there for us and for being part of our zoo family!

CONSERVATION Through conservation in the Pacific Northwest and around the world, we show care for wildlife and the green spaces they inhabit — and give our human community ways to act on their own care and concern. We continued critical conservation projects in 2020 with help from our donors. In 2021, we will push those projects forward with even greater urgency — and greater possibility. LEARNING AND INNOVATION Learning and innovation are how we turn wild into wonder and connect humans with animals. As communities across the state rebuild post-pandemic, we have a greater obligation than ever to create space where humans can connect with animals and each other — to inspire and to heal. REDUCE THE RISK – PREVENTING FUTURE PANDEMICS ACT Along with being a leader in animal care, conservation and education, Woodland Park Zoo is a leader in outreach to Congress about stopping wildlife trafficking. The COVID-19 pandemic has affected every person on the globe, and the zoo is working to prevent future pandemics from happening. Many previous pandemics have been tied to zoonotic diseases, meaning the viruses are transmitted from an animal to human. The scientific community is right now researching the likelihood that the current coronavirus is no different. Woodland Park Zoo supports the Preventing Future Pandemics Act, a bipartisan bill introduced in Congress to address the public health crisis caused by pandemics. If passed, the policy will generously fund U.S. government agencies to help other countries assess wildlife markets, regulate the import and export of exotic wildlife and co-create solutions for communities dependent on wildlife for food security. With your support, the zoo will continue to lead the fight against illegal wildlife trade and ensure our animals and community are safe.
