Dear Woodbury Ball supporter, I am a working mother of two typical children. Granted, they are anything but “typical” but this is a word a mother of a child with autism aspires to. Those who are not touched by the cause in some way truly cannot appreciate the heartache many of these children and their families face and the magnitude in which they truly need the support of everyone around them. When launching Woodbury magazine in 2003, giving back was—and always will be—at the core of our mission statement. As life progressed and brought its challenges, autism touched my family, alongside the one in 68, according to a recent study, children diagnosed today. I have been incredibly fortunate to spend time and create friendships with some of the most incredible mothers of children with autism whose strength surpass any and every expectation. I can’t possibly relate to how they feel or what they are met with when they return home. They travel through their day with heads held so high they make it easy to forget the reality of their world which shamefully allows us “typical parents” to sometimes forget. It is out of my interest to support these women, their children and families that the Woodbury Ball for Autism was created. What’s more, it is people like you who have made giving back through this event possible. Your support of the 12th annual Woodbury Ball for Autism and its JOURNAL OF HOPE is literally creating programs on the North Shore that allow these children to be a part of something so very special. “Without North Shore Autism Circle, my child would have nowhere to go after school. The phone doesn’t ring for my child and these programs offer one of the few things that bring a smile to my son’s face,” said one mother. Along with North Shore Autism Circle, 100% of the proceeds are shared with Autism Speaks Long Island, Spectrum Designs and The Adler Center for Special Needs @ Mid-Island Y JCC. This is why we are here; to give these children and their families a chance at life-changing therapy and all the support we possibly can. Early intervention can be crucial to a child’s development and the Woodbury Ball for Autism gives us the power to help bring that opportunity to others. I am so very grateful for the countless partners and volunteers we were so very fortunate to have on board and without whom this could not be the success it is today. To highlight a special thank you to those who truly went above and well beyond the standard call of duty: Amy Greenberg, Lori Hason, Kristin Schlossman, Christie Godowski, Deborah Horn, Debbie Hart, Carrie Herman, Stacey Gottlieb, Regina Grange, Nicole Soko, Rachael Klein, Jocelyn Wasserman, Hedy Wasserman, my outstanding husband, Jonathan Cohen, and the list goes on. That said, I can’t thank you enough for being a part of this very special initiative. Whether reading this as a guest of the event, a journal supporter, sponsor, an auction donor or simply because you make a habit of reading journals to be sure to notice those in your community who are truly giving back, it is you we have to thank for making one of my most important personal and professional missions come to life; making a difference.

Nassau County Museum of Art promotes artistic expression in children with autism through our programs, Autism and the Arts for teens and Creative Expeditions for young children and their families. Led by educators trained in art therapy, Jen Oppito and Mitra Dejkameh, through a collaboration with the Art Access department of the Queens Museum, the programs are inspired by studies suggesting that art provides opportunities for children with autism to communicate in different modalities. The programs are designed to be a fun, interactive social experience, that promotes independence in young artists as they go about the process of exploring and making works of art. A portion of each class is devoted to visiting the Museum’s galleries and viewing works of art, followed by hands-on art making activities. The upcoming session will focus on a selection of the Museum’s current exhibition:
