Although each system is diverse in production and location, they all took advantage of our industrial team’s expertise and equipment to satisfy their business needs and goals. We are continuing to expand our equipment range with the recent introduction of the “TEAM 6000” range of high-throughput products that includes the EA6000 optimizing edger, TV6000 twin vertical saw, and MR6000 gang saw. In addition, Wood-Mizer’s rapidly expanding material handling equipment continues to develop and improve with log ladders, step feeders, log singulators, log decks, log haul chains, belt conveyors, rollcases, transfer decks, hook decks, unscramblers and more. Scotland’s breathtaking landscapes, ancient castles, and unpredictable weather offer a unique charm to travellers. Venture north of Edinburgh, and you’ll discover Perth. You might think this the last bastion of civilization, but beyond the mountains lies Inverness, a surprisingly warm haven in Northern Scotland, blessed with a microclimate and fertile grounds. Here, amid the richness of Scottish nature, Ronald Munro Ferguson, the owner of Novar Sawmill, found his calling in sawmilling and forestry 12 years ago.

“

I find much satisfaction in working with wood for many reasons - the way it smells and feels under my fingers and for numerous applications it has. We make a variety of wooden products, including fences, garden furniture, small sheds, and garden rooms,” shares Ronald, who comes from a noble family with deep roots in forestry and sawmilling. Growing up on Novar Estate, surrounded by vast forests and lush grazing lands just 20 miles north of Inverness, he developed a profound appreciation for Scottish nature’s beauty and value. Novar Sawmill, situated on 7,4 acres with forests sprawling to nearly 9884 acres, is committed to sustainable forestry practices. “About a third of our forests are managed as ‘continuous green cover’ that we thin occasionally and leave for natural regeneration, while other two-thirds are grown commercially with Sitka spruce, Norway spruce, Douglas fir, and larch. We replant the felled forest area within five years,” Ronald explains. Embracing the potential of locally grown timber, Ronald observes, “More and more people are becoming aware of the benefits of building from the local timber. Commercially grown trees like spruce, larch, and fir are great for constructing houses and cabins.” In the past, Novar Sawmill used to sell more than 300 sheds a year which was sourced from another supplier; however, Ronald decided to become independent, and he invested in modern machinery to be able to manufacture modular sheds and garden rooms on his own, in a much superior form.

The sawmill employs seven people who utilize cutting-edge machines and tools, including the WB2000 industrial sawmill with the log deck, a sorting table, and the EG300 board edger. The company also operates on an industrial-level planer which might soon be extended by another, more compact unit from Wood-Mizer. “Earlier, we used to work on the LT70 WIDE sawmill set up in a production line, but we decided to sell it to another workshop in Wales and upgrade our sawmill to the WB2000,” says Ronald. “We’ve got many large Douglas fir trees that are 120 years old, and our customers often ask us to prepare 19 to 23 ft long beams. With the WB2000 sawmill, handling this material will not be a problem.” For operating the WB2000 sawmill, only two people are needed – one controlling the mill from an operator’s cab and the other receiving the material at the sorting table. “For Marcin, our operator of the former LT70 sawmill, it took only a few days to switch to operating the WB2000. Now he’s saying it is excellent

to work with! He doesn’t have to get up and look at the log because he has a good view from the control booth. He uses efficient hydraulics to load, turn and rotate the log, saving time and relieving stress. Additionally, he has several video cameras to view the cutting process closely,” explains Ronald. Apart from the EG300 board edger that Novar Sawmill utilizes for making all sorts of cladding for their customers, the company uses a CNC machine and an industrial planer for making large cants and beams. “In the future, we’d like to expand our workshop by adding a compact planer for making a variety of finished products, for example, lap-type cladding, floorboards, and profiled boards. Incorporating the four-sided Wood-Mizer MP360 planer into our production process perfectly reflects the motto, which we also find true in our case – From Forest to Final Form,” underlines Ronald. “We grow timber in our woodlands to supply customers with finished products from a log through the entire process.” Ronald has been cooperating with Wood-Mizer for ages, ever since an acquaintance advised him about the specialized sawmilling equipment he used in his business. “I remember a certain sawmiller from South Africa searching for his family in Scotland, who was stunned when he realized how much forest land my family had but no proper sawmill to make good use of it. Soon, I contacted the Scottish Agent for Wood-Mizer and bought my first LT70 sawmill,” reminds Ronald. Having a long-standing relationship with Wood-Mizer, Ronald speaks highly of the brand and its dedicated team. “I’ve been thrilled with Wood-Mizer products and services. Keith Threadgall has always been very helpful to me, offering the best customer service whenever I needed it,” Ronald affirms. He fondly recalls his visit to Wood-Mizer’s factory in Poland, where he was warmly welcomed and impressed by the scale and organization of the manufacturing plant.

igna 2023 brought together 1,300 exhibitors from 50 nations, attracting an impressive 80,000 visitors, matching the pre-COVID 2019 numbers. Amidst the gathering, innovation was at its peak as Wood-Mizer unveiled a range of new products and solutions designed to empower customers and meet the ever-evolving challenges of the industry.

The Ligna exhibition in Hannover, Germany, came alive with Wood-Mizer’s cutting-edge saw lines. Witnessing the grandeur of the WB2000 industrial sawmill, built to process large lumber volumes, and the TVS-HD twin vertical saw, transforming logs into pallet boards, left attendees stunned. The revelation of the EA3000 Optimizing Edger added to the intrigue, presenting a robust solution for the sawmilling industry, reflecting Wood-Mizer’s relentless pursuit of advancement and excellence.

Making Money by Turning Logs into Lumber The company’s complete product range was showcased at three trade show booths throughout the show. Wood-Mizer installed two industrial sawmilling lines for log processing. The lines consisted of sawmills joined in a synchronous operating system by material conveyors that sort and transport lumber, slabs, edgings, and sawdust for further processing.

Increasing Productivity One widely used option to increase sawmill productivity is to add an edger and multirip to the sawmill operation. In this case, the band sawmill produces unedged boards, passing through an edger/multirip with circular saws. At LIGNA, Wood-Mizer presented a range of edgers for different scale demands: machines differing in power, performance, maximum board dimensions, and price. The popular Wood-Mizer EG300 edger/ multirip has a 20 or 25 HP electric motor and a free-standing control panel with electronic Setworks. It can have 2 to 5 circular saws with a diameter of 14”.

As part of the industrial lines at the Wood-Mizer booth, industrial versions of edgers and multirips were shown in action, including an EG800 edger with a 40 to 65 HP motor and four 15” circular

saws, as well as an MR200 Gang Rip Saw with motors from 2x20 to 2x40 HP and several circular blades with up to 12 on each shaft capable of sawing lumber up to 8” thick.

The first line is based on Wood-Mizer’s flagship sawmill, the WB2000 industrial sawmill, which features a hydraulic log loading deck, an integrated automatic board removal conveyor, and the industrial MR200 Gang Rip Saw. The WB2000 was presented at LIGNA with a newly designed operator cabin, where an operator using joysticks at a control panel can comfortably control all the line functions, from log loading to positioning material on the sawmill bed, sawing, and removing finished boards from the sawmill for further processing. Wood-Mizer’s second industrial line processes logs into pallet boards and consists of a TVS HEAVY DUTY twin vertical saw (a new version of Wood-Mizer TVS first introduced at LIGNA 2023), a log loading ramp and sorting equipment, the HR700 horizontal doublehead band resaw, and the EG800 edger for slab processing. At a separate booth, Wood-Mizer presented its newly formed division, Wood-Mizer Systems, which specializes in designing and manufacturing custom-made industrial sawmill lines for the specific needs of enterprises. 12

Do you have a success story you can share with us? Tell us about a sawmill that is doing material handling right? Wood-Mizer’s largest industrial project to date is an ongoing installation in the Southwestern USA. We are proud to be one of a few key suppliers building a sawmill there that will become one of the largest Ponderosa Pine producers in the country. This is a project that you are likely to hear a lot more about in the future, but for now we will focus on the material handling aspects, specifically the log infeed system and residual systems that have already been installed and are up and running.

“To uphold the legacy of our founder Wilbur Nelson, the manufacturing of highquality true shims consistent in width and length and with feathered ends, is very important to us,” said Brian Peterson, President, Nelson Wood Shims. In the Summer of 2014, Nelson Wood Shims was not in the sawmill business. “We were struggling to procure the fiber we needed, and our wood shim sales continued to increase,” said Scott Berg, Plant Manager, Nelson Wood Shims. “We began looking at solutions to our problem and Wood-Mizer had an entry-level sawmill that would fit in our current building at the time. Wood-Mizer helped with the learning curve as we had not operated a sawmill before.”

With the integrated material handling components, lumber moves through the system efficiently for sorting and stacking. The company counts on the system to provide highly accurate cuts along with an excellent sawn finish which improves recovery savings further down the line in the dry-milling and finishing process.

The TV6000 Twin Vertical Saw is Wood-Mizer’s largest and most robust primary breakdown twin-vertical saw, handling a high-throughput of small to medium diameter logs up to 21.8ft in length. “The main priority at this primary stage in the log breakdown process is to achieve equal open faces on the sawn cant,” said Luke Murray, Wood-Mizer Sawmilling Solutions. Our twin bands achieve equal open face cutting using a fast and accurate log feed system coupled with pressurized holddown rollers and a sharp feed chain. This allows for higher recovery down the line at the multirips, also known as gang saws.” The multirips, saws capable of making multiple high tolerance cuts in a single pass, make up the next stage.

Optical sensors detect the presence of material, activating pneumatically assisted driven hold-downs to apply pressure down onto the cant, guiding the timber accurately through the MR6000 Gang Saw. “The MR6000 is a workhorse machine, producing the majority of finished product in most sawmills,” said Luke. Providing added flexibility, each machine is designed to operate as a standalone unit and can be configured differently in a sawmilling line should the requirements of Nelson Wood Shims change. Wood-Mizer’s system engineers and manufacturing capabilities combined with project management, training and commitment to customer service allowed the team to build a heavy-duty, high recovery, and reduced labor system that is running efficiently for Nelson Wood Shims. Simon’s passion for wood led him to venture into tree felling and joinery work soon after completing his secondary education. “I started my sawmilling about 30 years ago with a fellow contractor. I should mention my fellow sawmiller Dai Watkin Jones, who helped me a lot in establishing my business. I then built my sawmill based on a big circular rack sawmill, which I later upgraded to a static band sawmill.

Now I receive the slab off the mill, forward it to the edger, put the boards on the sticks, and off it goes to the dryer. We make ready-lumber without even having to touch it again,” Simon explains. In June, Oak Frame Company hosted a crowd of visitors who were interested in seeing Simon’s Wood-Mizer machines in action and observing the art of transforming oak into premium wood products.

from charming cabins, gazebos, and garden sheds to awe-inspiring oak roofs, framing, and constructions. “I have always enjoyed working with wood,” Simon says warmly. “Wood appeals to everybody. It has so many end-uses. It’s a phenomenal product at the end of the day.”

The LT40 served him well in handling the volume of lumber back then. Today, the fast and fully loaded LT70 sawmill, accompanied by the EG300 board edger, the log deck, and the material sorting table, paves the way for production improvements. “We decided to upgrade our workshop to the LT70 sawmilling line because it can handle a higher throughput of lumber,” Simon explains excitedly.

Apart from the machine demonstrations and getting an inside look at Oak Frame Company, Wood-Mizer experts offered valuable advice on sawmilling and woodworking projects, fostering a platform for customers to share insights and experiences with fellow sawmillers and woodworkers, including Simon and his team. n the city of Puerto Palomas de Villa, located on the border between the United States and Mexico, a company dedicated to the manufacturing of wooden railroad ties and posts has expanded its operations with a Wood-Mizer WM4500 Industrial sawmill. This expansion reflects the company’s strong determination to successfully carry out the entire wood production cycle.

Established in 1986, the company initially focused on producing railroad ties and wooden posts. However, approximately five years ago, the company implemented a strategic diversification plan that led them to enter the market for finger joints, mouldings and components used indoors and interiors. “It was my brother’s vision that led to the establishment of the company in 1986,” explains Javier Palacios, the owner of the company, as he narrates the history behind its establishment. His brother’s experience working at a creosote plant sparked the idea of treating wood with CCA (Chromated Copper Arsenate) preservative — a chemical wood preservative composed of chromium, copper and arsenic compounds known for its effectiveness in protecting wood from decay, insects, and fungal infestations. Additionally, they set up a copper salts

autoclave business. An autoclave is a specialized device used for sterilization and various industrial processes requiring high-pressure and high-temperature conditions. In this context, the copper salts autoclave was used to facilitate the impregnation of wood with the CCA solution, ensuring thorough and uniform protection. With determination and perseverance, the business gradually grew over the years. “We prioritize getting the utmost value from wood. We’ve implemented various operations to ensure efficient utilization,” explains Luis Anchondo, the engineer leading the production process. “The company’s business model is to procure logs and conduct a step-by-step process to create a variety of products. These products are then distributed among different companies under our management.”

Therefore, the company processes the logs and carries out the necessary downstream steps to produce a product that is ready to sell. “Upon the arrival of our logs, we start by processing them on the Wood-Mizer WM4500 sawmill. This serves as the first crucial step in our production process,” explains Luis, “Subsequently, the lumber is sent for drying in either kilns or stacked for air drying, depending on the specific process being employed.”

Resource Utilization and Self-Sufficiency Not only does the group efficiently utilize their lumber resources, but they have also established a sustainable process that minimizes waste. Sawdust and bark are utilized as a fuel source in the boiler that powers the kilns. They also recover slabs by turning them into moldings and finger joints. Through these methods, the group has achieved an impressive level of resource utilization and self-sufficiency. The sawmill has not only increased the company’s productivity and efficiency but has also opened up opportunities for expansion. Currently, they have the capability to produce 9 thousand board-feet per day with the Wood-Mizer sawmill. However, they have plans to acquire a resaw machine to optimize their process and further increase production. In the finger joint area, the company already produces an impressive 150 thousand board-feet per month, while in the railroad ties area, they handle an average of 3 to 4 thousand railroad ties sleepers per month. “We are determined to fully exploit the capabilities of this fantastic piece of equipment,” Javier expresses eagerly. Alongside their commitment to maximizing efficiency, the company is actively pursuing expansion into a new city and scouting for the perfect location. Their future plans include acquiring another Wood-Mizer sawmill and establishing a complete CCA treatment plant, equipped with all the necessary facilities.
