‘FAMILY DOCTORS–ALWAYS THERE TO CARE’ Family Doctor Day provides all of us a golden opportunity to shine a spotlight on the central role our discipline plays in achieving the goals of Universal Health Coverage and Health for All.

We plan to stress that globally, and I’m sure the seven WONCA presidents will do so regionally. Each and every one of us can also seize the moment, individually, to advocate on behalf of our field in the communities where we work and live. Check out the toolkit our Communications Officer, Maria Zavala, has assembled for us, complete with graphics, hashtags, useful visual materials, and more.

In preparation for the campaign, the title I’ve chosen for this newsletter is the slogan that the Executive Board arrived at after a brainstorming process. At first glance it might seem simplistic. It’s not. It’s basic, evoking the fundamentals. Let me ‘unpack’ that apparently simple slogan to reveal some of its complexity.
‘FAMILY DOCTORS’
P R E S I D E N T
We know who we are, but not everybody else does. We can use this opportunity to make it clear that we represent a medical specialty, with its own curriculum and research base. How, they may wonder, is our specialty different from the others? We are...‘Always There to Care’.
‘ALWAYS THERE’
That’s the hallmark of Family Medicine – continuity. People know what that’s worth because we’ve shown them: “I’ve been with you during the pandemic. I was there when you expected your first child, and to support you when postpartum challenges kicked in. I tend to your children when they come down with ordinary infections. I can advise you about their vaccinations, about stages of their development that worry you. I recognize when you’ve reached your limit and need time off from work. I can help you sort symptoms of disease from normal physiological responses. And, I plan to be there with you as you age, until, that is, I’m too old to keep on working. I’m hoping to put that day off by also taking good care of myself.” Family Medicine is indeed a clinical discipline, with diagnosing and treating disease being among our primary tasks. But we have a much broader repertoire, including, in the slogan’s words:
‘TO CARE’
We are profoundly aware that social care is a prerequisite for health. Thus, when treatment plans are designed, Family Doctors take all relationships into consideration.

elderly themselves, prioritizing other people’s needs above their own. Few cultures expect men to do the same, and they received little support to help them lighten the women’s load. In short, because we genuinely seek ‘Health for All’, we need to broaden our definition of ’Health Care’ to reflect our awareness that health and social care are fundamentally inseparable. We can then put that into practice, locally, by interweaving our communities’ health and social service systems. On Family Doctor Day, I’d like us to deliver this message to our politicians and policymakers: Please help us bridge the gaps between health and social care.
During the pandemic, the social determinants of health became even more clear. I presume you recognize these examples from your own practice:
The health of women and newborns, always vulnerable during a crisis, was placed in even greater jeopardy during the pandemic when social services were shut down. Even mothers of infants felt duty-bound to fill the gaps the closures left by taking care of the sick and the

Finally, intrinsic to the concept of CARE are the roles we family doctors play during difficult times: we serve as both witness and companion. We can`t always heal people. Sometimes, the best we can do is to be there, to provide a safe space for our patients’ pain, to offer them support and comfort. Being a professional partner in the lives of our patients and their families, we CARE for them.

May is here, which means World Family Doctor Day is coming! This edition is dedicated to our flagship celebration. It represents an important date to support and acknowledge the central role of Family Doctors and Primary Care Teams in delivering personal, accessible and continuous health care for all. As you know, our 2022 theme is “Family Doctors, Always There to Care”. Always, There, and Care are the three fundamental campaign pillars of this year's campaign, each with meaningful value. Our president, Dr Anna Stavdal, dedicates her column to World Family Doctor Day and explains the reason for this topic and the significance of the 2022 campaign pillars. In our section “From the Headquarters”, WONCA CEO, Dr Harris Lygidakis, reflects on the future of the Community in WONCA and spotlights the collaborative work within our organisation through our members, working parties, special interests groups, and young doctor movements across our represented regions.

FROM THE HEADQUARTERS
THE FUTURE OF COMMUNITY AT WONCA Community is what makes up the beating heart of WONCA. From our Working Parties and Young Doctors’ Movements to the links between individuals, our members have successfully championed connection and collaboration. A deep sense of belonging has been fostered on a global scale, based around a common set of values including empathy, equity, and delivering high quality family medicine, and fulfilled through shared activities such as education and research. The general spirit of our members wanting to volunteer their time and effort to contribute to ‘big picture’ issues in family medicine is alive and well, and examples of this abound.
WHAT IS ALREADY HAPPENING IN OUR COMMUNITY? One of the key priorities for WONCA is a drive to increase diversity. This means going beyond simply paying lip service to the concept and is a crucial area for our development of the organisation. We are dedicated to exploring how we can ensure our membership not only accurately reflects the global community we represent, but also provides genuinely safe and inclusive spaces which recognise and celebrate different needs and perspectives across the board. Our Young Doctors have been creating spaces of support, guidance, and mentorship, bringing groups together through conferences, webinars, professional exchanges and more. While operating under the umbrella of WONCA, and with its assistance when required, these movements have acted with autonomy, great creativity, and ambition across all seven of our represented regions.
WONCA has more than 25 Working Parties & Special Interest Groups which have also been exploring new and innovative ways to engage with wider themes, from sharing best practice to offering advice to relevant institutions and policymakers, to embarking on specific projects. The Working Party on Mental Health has successfully obtained a grant for a project focused on enhancing the quality of care for major depressive disorders delivered by family doctors. The Working Party on Rural Practice has organised and run their own global conference. The Working Party on the Environment has embarked on a ‘train the trainers’ project around air pollution & climate health. This is to name but a few great examples of the exceptional work of our members.
WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD? With the drive for diversity as a North Star, we have many paths to continue exploring and new avenues to seek out. Opportunities can be created to make a meaningful impact whatever the passions, interests or ambitions of our members may be. All that has been achieved so far gives us more than enough reason to be excited for what’s to come. We want to encourage our Working Parties, Groups, Movements and Regions to be seeking new ways to include more members from diverse groups in meaningful ways. At every turn, we aim to consider any inadvertent barriers which may be in place in the organisation, from language, to policy, to when and where meetings or conferences take place, to which interests are being represented. Our vision is a truly inclusive environment.

One of WONCA’s greatest strengths lies in collaboration, and we are excited to see what more becomes possible as we focus on growing these connections, both internally and externally. Within the membership, there are many opportunities for individuals to build networks and exchange ideas, and to join Working Parties or Special Interest Groups which best represent their interests. There is so much potential not only for these groups to work on their own key priorities, but also for collaboration between groups on wider themes, to further boost growth and impact by sharing best practice, insight and resources.
WHAT ARE THE PRACTICAL WAYS WE CAN ACHIEVE THIS? CONFERENCES & PROJECTS There are many possibilities for how collaboration can flourish in our community. One option is for Working Parties to build on the existing format of theme-based summits or conferences, delivering more of these to their members, or even working with other Parties on shared themes and areas of interest. Thematic conferences are tried and tested in other non-profit organisations, and effective at sharing best practice and exchanging ideas among members. Technology also provides us with the opportunity to hold such conferences virtually or in a blended way. Another option is for groups to embark on projects. These can take any format, from developing guidelines, to education, from undertaking research, to carrying out activities directly in the community. They can be intended to produce content, to inform policy, to explore innovative solutions to problems, to exchange professional knowledge or any other aim which feels significant to the group.
INCREASING VISIBILITY We also want to encourage members and groups to increase their visibility to new and more diverse audiences, both within and outside of the WONCA community. Great work is already being done, and sharing it more widely will allow it to ripple out and have a greater impact. It also encourages new members to join, which helps continuously grow the scale of our work. One way of increasing visibility would be for potential ambassadors to come forward; key people of influence within communities, countries, or regions, who can convey messages and share the work and impact of the group through their networks or through social media. This has the potential to not only engage the wider community and perhaps encourage new membership, but also to build capacity and even lead to new local guidelines or policy changes.
SHARING EXPERTISE Another possibility is that our Working Parties & Special Interest Groups can become points of reference in their own right. The sheer level of expertise in our membership is quite astounding, and other organisations, institutions and policymakers can benefit from the insight these groups can provide. It has been inspiring to see this starting to happen already, and hopefully we will see this flourish.
EXTERNAL PARTNERSHIPS Beyond the membership there is also opportunity for partnership on specific projects. The successful collaborations of the Special Interest Group on Family Violence in the “Improving Opportunities For Primary Care And Advocacy For Family Violence” (IMOCAFV) project demonstrates what is possible when we go further afield.

Stepping outside the WONCA family gives members and groups the opportunity to hear new voices and access expertise which might bring fresh insight.
SUPPORT FROM WONCA LEADERSHIP AND THE SECRETARIAT We are working behind the scenes to help facilitate connections between members and build stronger networks. We are dedicated to building capacity which can enable us to offer more practical support to our members. We have already developed our Membership Portal; an online space for Working Parties and Special Interest Groups to come together. This allows groups to offer ideas through blogs and forums, to share key documents, and to manage their membership more effectively. Our focus now is on deploying the Portal within our groups and exploring opportunities for more networking, such as ‘matchmaking’. We are looking at how we can clarify individual or group needs and priorities and increase visibility of areas of expertise in a multitude of ways.
Furthermore, we are working towards ways of offering more practical support to our members, such as supporting in the day-to-day project management needs of groups, offering advice and co-ordinating efforts. We are also exploring ways to assist groups in accessing resources beyond WONCA, including grant funding and consortia participation. Ultimately, the future of our WONCA community rests in the creativity and passion of the community itself, and we are full of optimism for, and ready to wholeheartedly support, what is next.

REFUGEE
CRISIS
WONCA released a Statement on Ukraine on 4 March 2022. WONCA has also encouraged its members to take action and suggested ways in which help could be provided. The WONCA Working Party on Mental Health and the WONCA Special Interest Group on Migrant Care, International Health & Travel Medicine issue this additional statement of support.
STATEMENT OF SUPPORT The consequences of the military aggression in Ukraine and the resultant humanitarian crisis have profound implications for health, for healthcare workers in Ukraine and surrounding countries, and for their systems of delivering care. The WONCA Working Party on Mental Health and the WONCA Special Interest Group on Migrant Care, International Health & Travel Medicine, stand in support of our primary care colleagues and express our horror at the unfolding events there. Living in conflict zones and forced migration, cause untold suffering related to health, including injury and disability. Loss of care infrastructure, including prevention, chronic disease management, access to medication and rehabilitation services, as well as infection control, can bring rapid deterioration in health. There is such suffering and deprivation in Ukraine, but effects are reaching further into neighbouring countries and the population of the aggressor.

It is essential to have rapid international cooperation for cross-border agreements on health and immigration policies to efficiently and effectively direct resources where they are most needed. Preserving life, helping the physically, psychologically, and socially wounded, and looking after vulnerable people who are far from their usual sources of support involves working in difficult circumstances. Our thoughts are with those in this endeavour worldwide. Through our WONCA Working Party and Special Interest Group, we offer our service in supporting them to bear witness to their situations and advocate for their populations; to share learning from such emergency situations; and to promote best practice and policy development.

We urge our governments to welcome all those seeking sanctuary from states that are unable to provide protection, to uphold their human rights regardless of their origin, nationality, beliefs, or racial identity, and to ensure their access to timely and meaningful health and social care. PAGE 9

UKRAINE The scale of humanitarian crisis unfolding in Ukraine and the neighbouring countries is staggering. It becomes urgent to support humanitarian aid and provide assistance to vulnerable people and those taking care of them. We urge our members to take action and support key humanitarian relief organisations, including the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Medicines Sans Frontiers (MSF), and UNFPA. Due to the uncertainty of the situation, it is currently advisable to support such organisations, which have the experience and logistic infrastructure to deliver medicines and other material in a coordinated manner.
The World Medical Association (WMA) has set up a support structure to funnel medical help to Ukraine. To support this, WMA, the European Forum of Medical Associations (EFMA) and the Standing Committee of European Doctors (CPME) have set up the Ukraine Medical Help Fund. The account holder for donations is the WMA. The funds will be redistributed to WMA’s partners in Poland, Slovakia and other bordering countries in order to help Ukrainian colleagues or the medical help for refugees from Ukraine.

In addition to the need to coordinate, it is crucial to prioritise needs and concentrate on the essential (what is to be shipped first). Establishing several safe corridors through which to send goods is very important — it will be difficult to manage otherwise. UKRAINE 4) MÉDECINS SANS FRONTIÈRES Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is one of international organisations active in Ukraine, delivering medical supplies in Kyiv, Mariupol, Kramatorsk and Pokrovsk, and sending emergency and specialist medical staff. MSF is supporting hospitals and doctors remotely, including by providing training on trauma care, and through telemedicine, while also working in neighbouring countries offering support for displaced people. ALWAYS Family Doctors are present at all times, and continuity is a fundamental feature of their work. They continuously provide care in all stages of patients’ lives, and throughout the big and small moments. Continuity is also present in care through the ongoing follow-up carried out to patients, where coordination with other levels of care and health care professionals is crucial. Lastly, continuity represents their constant preparation and skills development, uninterrupted research, and the ability to adapt and build resilience to change, technologies, methodologies, and educational strategies.
THERE Family doctors and primary care professionals are there, wherever and whenever needed. Always at the front line —in war, health crises and times of peace. They are part of the communities they work with, proactively reaching and engaging with members, sharing their core values, creating a unique connection with their patients, and building bonds of trust.
CARE Delivering accessible, equitable, sustainable, high-quality care is Family Doctors' raison d'etre. Being a Family Doctor is both a privilege and a responsibility, always looking after people and providing what is necessary for their welfare and protection, identifying their patients' needs to guarantee the fundamental right to health.

FOR SAFETY AND HEALTH AT WORK
Source: International Labour Organization and United Nations. The annual World Day for Safety and Health at Work on 28 April promotes the prevention of occupational accidents and diseases globally. The World Day for Safety and Health at Work 2022 focuses on enhancing social dialogue towards a culture of safety and health. Under the theme “Act together to build a positive safety and health culture” the International Labour Organization and United Nations campaign is an awareness-raising effort intended to focus international attention on the magnitude of the problem and on how promoting and creating a safety and health culture can help reduce the number of work-related deaths and injuries. “We have learned from past crisis that workplaces can be of vital importance to prevent and control outbreaks. Adequate safety and health measures at work can play a crucial role in containing the spread of the disease, while protecting workers and society at large. Governments, employers and workers all have a role to play in tackling COVID19 crisis, and their collaboration is key.” Read more about the World Day for Safety and Health at Work at the United Nations website.

OF THE MIDWIVES 5 May marks International Day of the Midwife, celebrating the work of midwives around the globe and the care they provide to women and families.

This year, the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM), which began as the International Midwives Union in Belgium, turns a century-old, celebrating with the theme “100 years of progress”. The theme recognises the meaningful progress in the midwifery field over the past century.

The UNFPA, the ICM and the World Health Organization’s 2021 State of the World’s Midwifery report revealed that if governments invested in midwives, 4.3 million lives could be saved every year by 2035, a number that includes maternal deaths, neonatal deaths and stillbirths. According to UNFPA, this group of mostly women health care professionals could meet 90 per cent of reproductive health needs and prevent 65 per cent of maternal and newborn deaths. “Midwives have been strengthening primary health-care systems for decades and will play a vital role in the health and well-being of women, children and adolescents in the decades to come”. For the 2022 campaign, the International Confederation of Midwives also compiled an Advocacy Toolkit and Resources Pack, with messages and graphics to advocate for midwives and midwifery on and beyond 5 May 2022. PRAIA VERMELHA A BRAZILIAN BAND OF FAMILY PHYSICIANS Discover Praia Vermelha (Red Beach), a Brazilian band integrated by family physicians. The group started in 2012 as a band, Empenha, as the members, all family physicians, worked in Vila Cruzeiro, in the Penha neighbourhood, Rio de Janeiro. The band performed at congresses and meetings, with emphasis on the International Congress of Family and Community Medicine. They also participated in a health professionals movement from the collective Nenhum Serviço de Saúde a Menos (No Health Service Less), both in Rio de Janeiro. Their first authorial songs tread through rock, samba, pop-jazz, frevo and caranda. The current line-up is: Alfredo de Oliveira Neto (Tufa): voice and percussion; Laís Pimenta: vocals; Leonardo
Graever: drums; Brenda Costa: bass and percussion; Jorge Esteves: bass and guitar; Moisés Nunes (Zartinho): piano and guitar; Daniel do Vale: guitar and acoustic guitars; Fernando Pedroso: guitars and percussion and Bruno Villar in musical production. Last year, Alfredo de Oliveira Neto, a member of Praia Vermelha, led the “Music and Mental Health Project”, along with Arnab Bishnu Chowdhury (India) and Moisés Nunes (Brazil). This effort created by the WONCA Working Party for Mental Health aimed to mitigate through music the psychosocial effects posed by the COVID19. MEET THE INTERNATIONAL ADVISORY GROUP We have gathered a stellar international advisory group to help us develop the global element of this exciting conference. Members of the group come from every corner of the world, so that the conference will have a truly international flavour. I am delighted that many of the members are younger and from the next generation of future rural health leaders as the future of global rural health will be in their hands. In the wake of the tragedy of Covid-19, this global gathering will give us the opportunity to meet up again, share ideas, meet new friends, and reset our objective to achieve Universal Rural Health Coverage and quality health care for the world’s rural population. CHAIR: JOHN WYNN-JONES - UK A rural GP in Wales for over 30 years, now retired from clinical practice. Trained at Guy’s Hospital London 1969-75. Founded the UK Institute of Rural Health and the Welsh Rural Postgraduate Unit in 1997 and established the European Rural and Isolated Practitioner’s Association (EURIPA) remaining its president until 2012. One of the founding members of the Wonca (World Organisation of Family Doctors) Working Party on Rural Practice and chair from 2013-19. Currently the Senior Lecturer in Rural and Global Health at Keele Medical School in the UK and Board Member English National Centre for Rural Health and Care. AUSTRALASIA KATELYN THORN - NEW ZEALAND Dr Katelyn Costello is a New Zealand doctor based in Queenstown. She is dual training in both General Practice and Rural Hospital Medicine.
SHANNON NOTT - AUSTRALIA Dr Shannon Nott is the Rural Director of Medical Services for Western New South Wales (NSW) Local Health District in Australia. SOUTH ASIA: ZAKIUR RAHMAN - BANGLADESH Md Zakiur Rahman is the President of Primary Care and Rural Health Bangladesh. He is also the Executive, Wonca Working Party on Rural Practice and Organizing Chairman of Wrhc2020 Dhaka Bangladesh. GOBITH RATNAM - SRI LANKA A Family Physician from Sri Lanka and a visiting lecturer at department of Community and Family Medicine, University of Jaffna, Sri Lanka. EUROPE JEAN PIERRE JACQUET - FRANCE Jean Pierre is a rural family doctor in the French Alps. He is a former teacher in the Department of General Practice, Faculty of Medicine and former Director of the Scientific Committee of the Department of General Medicine, University of Grenoble. DONATA KURPAS - POLAND Prof. Donata Kurpas, MD, PhD is a full-time senior researcher and lecturer at the Department of Family Medicine, Wroclaw Medical University (WMU).

MARCELA CUADRADO URUGUAY Marcela Cuadrado is Specialist in Family and Community Medicine and an Educator from Uruguay. She was the former Adjunct Professor of the Department of Family and Community Medicine of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay. AFRICA
EASTERN MEDITERRANEAN NAGWA HEGAZY - EGYPT Nagwa Nashat Hegazy is a family physician and a medical educator. She is an assistant professor in Family Medicine, Family Medicine Department, Faculty of Medicine, Menoufia University, Egypt since February 2018 and acting currently as the director of the Medical Education and Human Resources Center in the Faculty of Medicine, Menoufia University. LIAM GLYNN - IRELAND Prof Liam Glynn is the Professor of General Practice at the University of Limerick School of Medicine. He qualified from Trinity College, Dublin in 1995 and, after completing general practice training in the Scottish highlands and remote health care postings to Guyana and Ecuador, he returned to work in the West of Ireland as a rural GP and academic. BESROUR CENTRE FOR GLOBAL FAMILY MEDICINE LEARNING MODULE The COVID-19 pandemic has caused the largest and most rapid disruption to the practices and training of family physicians. It has revealed gaps in the capacity of our health care systems, but it has also led to a surge in resiliency, innovation, and gained experience as primary care providers and educators adapt to this new paradigm. The Besrour Centre for Global Family Medicine is excited to launch the 2nd module to the FM Pivot Educational Initiative. It has been developed by a team of global Besrour Centre partners to help family physicians and family medicine educators prepare for similar challenges in the future within their own contexts. Our module “Chronic Disease Management during the COVID-19 Pandemic: Challenges and Opportunities” is now available for free. The online module aims to apply global experience in adaptations of chronic disease management during the pandemic to improve quality and efficiency of care.
Start this learning module here. Series of five modules focus on global health emergency competencies with five themes: Community-based research, chronic disease, mental health, virtual education and disaster preparedness. First module released in September 2021 “Research Questions in Pandemics and Other Crises: An introduction for family medicine researchers”. Modules available for free here.

PATRICK CHEGE MEMORIAL RESEARCH AWARD The Besrour Centre for Global Family Medicine (Besrour Centre) is pleased to announce the call for abstracts for the Dr. Patrick Chege Memorial Research Award for posters being presented at the College of Family Physicians of Canada™ (CFPC)’s Family Medicine Forum (FMF). We encourage novice and experienced researchers to submit abstracts. If you are interested in mentorship in this regard, the Besrour Centre’s Scientific Committee is available to provide support. MCGILL FMER: INTERNATIONAL AWARDS IN FAMILY MEDICINE EDUCATION RESEARCH The McGill Family Medicine Education Research Group (FMER) is proud to announce the sponsorship of ‘The Pierre Pluye International Mixed Methods Thesis and Dissertations Awards in Family Medicine Education’ to celebrate the original and influential contribution of Dr. Pierre Pluye, founding member of the FMER, to the advancement of mixed methods research and mixed studies reviews in general, and of the family medicine education field of inquiry in particular. These awards are aimed to distinguish the work of promising new researchers committed to the advancement of science in family medicine education research around the world. As of the academic year 2021-2022, two academic awards – one for the best MSc thesis, and one for the best PhD dissertation – will therefore be granted by an Award FMER Evaluation Committee chaired by Dr. Pluye. The committee will include at least two other FMER researchers, and two FMER-affiliated graduate students (one MSc student and one PhD student or candidate). ELIGIBILITY
Submission period: May 1st to August 31st, 2022. Candidates must have completed their thesis or dissertation no earlier than two academic years prior submission, i.e., before August 31st, 2020. The thesis or dissertation must meet 3 criteria: a)be related to research in family medicine education; b)must uses mixed methods in empirical research and/or literature review; c)be written in English or French.
APPLICATION – PROCEDURE
Applications must include the five documents detailed below. Incomplete applications will be disregarded: • A cover letter in which the candidate clearly indicates the award s/he is applying for (thesis or dissertation);introduces him/herself, the program and institution in which s/he graduated, as well as his/her research supervisors; and briefly describes the investigation conducted. • An abstract of maximum 500 words that summarizes the thesis/dissertation. Particular attention should be given to the description and justification of the mixed methods (empirical research and/or review) adopted in accordance with GRAMMS (Good Reporting of Mixed Methods Studies), and of the major theoretical, empirical, methodological, and practical contributions to the sciences of family medicine education. • A copy of the thesis in PDF format. • An updated version of the candidate’s Curriculum Vitae. • A letter of support from the candidate’s principal research supervisor (specifying that the thesis has been approved to obtein a PHD Degree.
