SOLID CHANGE The entire field of medicine is experiencing a period of massive change, triggered in part by the COVID pandemic. Our priorities, our clinical work, our working methods are all being impacted. Even so, a unique opportunity lies hidden in all this upheaval, instability, and uncertainty – a chance for us to envision and shape WONCA’S future. We can reflect on where our organization is today, how we want it to develop, how best to help make that happen, and how to recognize it when WONCA has succeeded in achieving its aims.

In other words: This is a golden moment for us to build a solid, realistic, strategic plan.
“A goal without a plan is just a wish.” Antoine de Saint-Exupéry While the ‘intensive training ’ in digitalization that we are all going through can be quite challenging, it’s also exciting, connecting us to more of our colleagues and communities. In fact, the global perspective on preparedness and medical care is now at the forefront. • WONCA has also been changing. The Secretariat has moved from Bangkok to Brussels. Relocating created the need for a new WONCA Association legal structure, which has altered how we govern our organization. The pandemic required us to resequence our biannual World Conferences and Councils. In 2021, for the first time ever, we held these events virtually.

The last strategic planning WONCA engaged in began in 2008, when GROW (the Group to Redesign the Operations of WONCA) was tasked with developing a plan to restructure WONCA, to increase its operational capacity, and to improve its financial standing. In 2010, in Cancun, Mexico, the GROW Report was approved by Council. Some of its recommendations have indeed borne fruit, while others proved unworkable. (That is the nature of all planning processes.)
• And: WONCA is celebrating. This year marks WONCA’s 50th anniversary!
And now, I am pleased to report that a process of formulating a new strategic plan was launched by the Executive Board, in March, 2022.
Dr. Richard Roberts, who became WONCA’s President the year the GROW Report was adopted, has warned that, “Our biggest risk is to think too small.” We’ll take those words to heart as we begin our strategic planning process. An organization with as solid a foundation as WONCA’s can safely plan to have an even more profound impact in the future.
A quick snapshot of our starting point: • WONCA is growing. New member organizations continue to enrol. Each of our regions has it own Young Doctor Network. Working Party and Special Interest Group activities are flourishing.

A closer look at the strategic planning process: The first stage of formulating our plan involves evaluating the organization's current status via the well-known SWOT analyses (‘Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats’). For a strategic planning process to be successful, members need to have a stake in it, and it must be inclusive. That’s why SWOT analyses are being conducted this very minute in eight different focus groups, involving such main contributors to WONCA as the current and former Regional Presidents, young doctors, members-at-large on various Executive Boards, Past Presidents and CEOs, Chairs of Working Parties and Special Interest Groups. We’ll also need to spell out our organization's mission, vision, purpose, and objectives. To this end, we’ll invite delegates to Council on June 28th to join the workshop session to give their structured input.
• an assessment of the resources required to fund those activities. That is indeed a complex process, and we hope to have a progress report ready to present to our members, in person and virtually, when we meet for Council at the end of this June. It is a privilege for me, as President, to hold the baton during this leg of the relay, “Making WONCA Stronger.” I’m grateful for the support I’m already receiving and I look forward to engaging with you in this on-going strategic planning process. To the rank and file, let me say this: Please share your views – with the leadership of your own member organization, the Chair of your Working Party or Special Interest Group – so that they can funnel your insights back to those of us who are leading the process.

Our main purpose in creating a strategic plan is to determine, realistically, where we want WONCA to be 5 to 7 years from today. Strategic goals and intentions have to be both broad and specific if they’re to be useful; that is, they need to lay out our main objectives and also detail what activities might help us to reach each one. For that, budgetary implications must be thought through. In other words, we’ll need to be as SMART as we can possibly be – to make our objectives ‘Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Timely.‘
• a mission statement and an overview of our objectives, including some ideas for future enhancements;

A central aspect of WONCA`s vision is the set of core values on which the Specialty of Family Medicine is based. These help define what we have in common. I’m looking forward to farreaching discussions within our global community, brainstorming how we can operationalize our shared values in the midst of so much change.

75TH WORLD HEALTH ASSEMBLY The Seventy-fifth World Health Assembly, held in Geneva, Switzerland, on 22-28 May 2022, was the first in-person Health Assembly since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. The theme of this year’s Health Assembly is: Health for peace, peace for health. The COVID-19 pandemic and other health emergencies with international reach have highlighted the leadership and coordinating role of WHO in responding to such events. Strengthening preparedness for and response to health emergencies are a key theme of the Health Assembly.
Events began with a high-level segment on 22 May with speeches from the elected Health Assembly President, Heads of State, special guests, an address by the WHO Director-General and the presentation of the Director-General’s Health Awards. On the occasion WONCA collaborated with other organizations in multiple constituency statement, including one on Human Resources for Health and two of them on Strengthening WHO Preparedness for and Response to Health Emergencies.
CONSTITUENCY STATEMENT ON GLOBAL STRATEGY ON HUMAN RESOURCES FOR HEALTH: WORKFORCE 2030 75th World Health Assembly (Agenda item 15) 23 May 2022 The COVID-19 pandemic has reinforced the critical importance of health workers to strengthen health systems and global health security. It has highlighted women’s central role in delivering health services, since women are 70% health workers, and 90% of frontline health workers. Community Health Workers and Primary Care providers have played an irreplaceable role during the pandemic and in continuing essential health services. However, after over two years of unprecedented stress, health workers are experiencing burnout and leaving their professions, deepening the existing global health worker shortage. Additionally, many women health workers are marginalized in decision making, underpaid, often unprotected and harassed.
Therefore we call on member states to: Create an enabling environment where women in all their intersecting identities can harness their expertise and play an equal role in health decision-making and leadership ; Ensure safe, decent and equal work for Women health workers including those providing critical SRH services, through a new social contract , which is fair for women and strengthens health systems. Address the burnout and shortage of health workers, which risks the low quality of care for clients including for mothers and babies.

Implement large scale gender-responsive training of the health workforce to meet future needs and achieve UHC, including with. pandemic prevention, preparedness and response financing mechanisms. Strengthen Primary Health Care through recruitment and training, including on sexual and reproductive health, and addressing retention. Ensure PHC reaches the most marginalized by incentivizing Health workers to work in remote and rural areas ;

CONSTITUENCY STATEMENT ON STRENGTHENING WHO PREPAREDNESS FOR AND RESPONSE TO HEALTH EMERGENCIES 75th World Health Assembly (Agenda Items 16.2) 24 May 2022 Because the actors involved in any response to a future pandemic are varied, for such an instrument to be effective, it must result from strong multilateralism, with equal respect and participation afforded to all partners involved, including non-state organizations committed to the public interest. It must embrace the wide range of individuals, communities, governments, and the private sector necessary to prevent epidemics and strengthen social protection and health systems, including the protection of the workforce’s health – a workforce that extends beyond the health professions, such as doctors, nurses, and social workers, and includes service workers, such as bus drivers, janitors, and supermarket clerks. It must also include environmental health officers, who are increasingly necessary in an ailing world For any Pandemic Treaty to be effective, it must likewise centre community engagement, educate
and involve community members, employ effective communication strategies throughout, and thereby foster trust — without public confidence in the process and its policies, any instrument is doomed to fail. Moreover, the Treaty must ensure an equitable distribution of resources, from financial assistance to vaccine access, knowledge sharing and technology transfer. It must safeguard the health of the marginalized. Further, it must acknowledge that any instrument needs to integrate palliative care into primary health care, including the training of healthcare workers and the availability of related medicines to all – regardless of economic status – and thereby ensure that those already affected by other diseases, and those who cannot be saved, are guaranteed a dignified death. It must ensure that preparedness and response interventions are environmentally sustainable and in line with climate commitments.

CONSTITUENCY STATEMENT ON STRENGTHENING WHO PREPAREDNESS FOR AND RESPONSE TO HEALTH EMERGENCIES [WHF] 75th World Health Assembly (Agenda Items 16.2) 24 May 2022 This constituency statement is delivered by the World Heart Federation on behalf of the Framework Convention Alliance for Tobacco Control, International Alliance of Patients’ Organizations, International Diabetes Federation, International Pharmaceutical Students Federation, International Society of Nephrology, World Hypertension League, and World Obesity Federation. It is also supported by the World Organization of Family Doctors and World Stroke Organization. People living with circulatory conditions are disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The lack of attention to NCDs in the early stages of the pandemic impeded their inclusion in strategic response plans and few countries included NCDs as part of essential health services packages. This has resulted in a deadly interplay between the NCD epidemic and the COVID-19 pandemic. NCDs including hypertension, kidney disease, diabetes, stroke, obesity, and other circulatory conditions must be a top priority in preparedness, response, readiness and coordination activities and agreements at global, regional and country levels.
As such, our organisations, representing the global circulatory health community (those most impacted by COVID-19), call on Member States to Prioritize ongoing prevention, screening, and treatment for circulatory conditions in national pandemic response and recovery plans through patient co-creation; Increase domestic allocation of resources and develop targeted policies to tackle CVD and NCD risk factors, including those focusing on digital health technologies, through mechanisms such as taxation of unhealthy commodities Integrate monitoring and data collection on NCD prevalence, comorbidities, and risk factors into measures of pandemic readiness, resilience, and response; Strengthen Primary Health Care and invest in family medicine to ensure equitable access to essential health services, particularly for people living with NCDs and in low-resource settings; and Strengthen the NCD component of emergency preparedness and response by formalizing these actions in a WHO convention, agreement or international instrument on pandemic preparedness. • WPs/SIGs were requested to have a young doctor liaison in their executive committee.
As the Young Doctors’ Representative, I participated as an invited speaker in several events, including a webinar organized by the Junior Doctors’ Network (JDN) of the World Medical Association on ‘Sharing Best Practices – how to plan and implement global health advocacy?’.
• The YDM committee is planning to carry out joint webinars with the WONCA WPs/SIGs covering various important topics
AFRIWON RENEISANCE UPDATE 2022 REPORT ON RECENT ACTIVITIES From the beginning of the year, the AfriWon executive group and council had multiple monthly meetings where several key developments were made with the progression of leadership from the previous executive to the new ones. The prior executives had completed the handover process are the new executives are now in full effect in their roles. The new executives tasks included maintaining the organisations existing activities and developing new initiatives. The group mantains multiple undergoing and productive discussions towards the preconference holding in Abuja, Nigeri, in November 2022.
PRE-CONFERENCE The community of AfriWon renaissance is excited about the upcoming pre-conference in Nigeria in November 2022, carring part of the preparation process. The theme of the conference will be announced in July 2022.
The pre-conference represents the perfect time for all members of the community throughout the continent to meet live in Abuja, which will be the first in-person meeting since the pandemic outbreak. The event will also be held in a Hybrid format though we encourage most participants to attend live. The organising committee is still trying to see how to raise funds for event organisers and members who want to be there but are unable due to financial challenges.
THEME GROUPS AfriWon strenght lays on different thematical groups of interest within the community. At the beginning of the year, the goal was to boost these groups participation and increase their members. We underwent a promotion drive to showcase community members to the different theme groups. This activity yielded a positive outcome.

AfriWon is about to embark on a quarterly online newsletter to highlitht the theme groups activities and country efforts. The first edition will be released in July 2022.
The World Family Doctors Day 2022 was observed with many doctors showcasing the valued family doctors bring and celebrating with a special focus on those who work in adverse conditions where resources are not available.

AL RAZI YDM UPDATE 2022 AL RAZI YDM NEWSLETTER - MAY 2022 Leading the organization of YDM Preconference (WONCA World - Abu Dhabi, 24th Nov 2021) Reina Alameddine (preconference Manager, Lebanon representative), facilitated a series of meetings of the Preconference Working Group over 3 months in preparation for the preconference, then she moderated it under the theme of “Embracing Diversity”. Nouf Alnoon (UAE representative): prepared the Abu Dhabi Virtual Tour, arranged with the Keynote Speaker, and in collaboration with the Al Razi UAE team, she led the preparation of Two Workshops during the preconference: (1) Digital presence in the 21st century: a family medicine perspective (facilitated by Maram Alsmairat – Jordan), and (2) Arabic Language and glimpse on traditional medical practices (facilitated by Aala Khalaf – UAE).
Adel Yasky (KSA representative): actively participated in pre-conference meetings, and provided technical support by designing ads and promoting outreach via social media channels. Anas Almohtaseb (Al Razi chair): made welcoming remarks and presented Al Razi's achievements. 1. 4. Contributing the World Family Doctor Day 2022: Al Razi members participated in the global activity World Family Doctor Day, sharing photos from their settings. National groups prepared their own videos and online materials which were shared on social media platforms. 5. Others: updating the Al Razi web page, ideas for Anna Stavdal's vision for the WONCA, suggestions for WFDD themes, Eid Al-Fiter congratulation card and preparation for WONCA EMR Conference 2022 (Muscat - Oman).

Preparation and presenting the “Research Methods” training course: This is a 16-hour online course aiming to provide essential research skills in medical sciences. The activity was led by Beesan in collaboration with Adel, and the trainer is Dr Zaher Nazzal, Community Medicine Specialist at Al-Najah National University Nabulus, Palestine. The first day of the course was Saturday 28 May 2022, with more than 50 trainees.

POLARIS UPDATE 2022 COVID & VIRTUAL CARE, DEBUNKING MYTHS IN FAMILY MEDICINE & MORE Over the last six months, Family Medicine Early Career Physicians, Residents and Medical Students in our Polaris region have continued to immerse themselves into full scope family practice, while continuing to support their patients, colleagues and local/broader communities in the midst of the COVID Pandemic. In response to the rising need for virtual care, a group of Canadian medical students on the CFPC Section of Medical Students (SOMS) developed a working group and online tool to equip students with strategies and techniques to conduct these types of patient visits. The website is available here. To illustrate the broad scope of clinical practice in which our physicians, residents, and medical students work and learn, we have developed a
new spotlight of the month campaign using our social media platforms (Instagram and Facebook: @woncapolaris), highlighting the clinical and non-clinical activities of one individual in our region each month. As well, we have developed a “debunking myths in family medicine” campaign to help increase awareness on what the field of family medicine entails. Our hope is to break down common misconceptions and broaden our understanding of what family medicine has to offer. Our Polaris executive team has also continued to develop quarterly newsletters that highlight relevant topics in family medicine. Our most recent issue will be released in June 2022 and focuses on resiliency and methods to overcome burnout in the healthcare profession.

She has had an active role in mentoring our younger physicians, residents, and medical students in the Polaris region. Through her collaboration with the American College of Lifestyle Medicine she has also been a strong advocate for integrating Preventative and Lifestyle Medicine into clinical practice. We wish her all the best in her future endeavors!
THE RAJAKUMAR MOVEMENT UPDATE 2022 The Executive and Council of The Rajakumar Movement (TRM) had actively participated in the WONCA APR Council Meeting, WONCA YDM PreConference and WONCA World Conference in Abu Dhabi last year. It was a memorable and proud moment for us that Dr Noor Harzana Harrun from Malaysia won the WONCA Rising Star Award. We had our regular meetings to discuss, plan and organize many activities, especially for our young doctors in the Asia Pacific Region. • The TRM Research Group, in collaboration with the Academy of Family Physicians of Malaysia and the Malaysian Family Medicine Specialists’ Association, organized the second batch of Basic Research Training for young doctors. It consisted of a monthly webinar session on Evidence-Based Medicine. Experts from the Asia Pacific Region were invited to deliver the lecture, followed by small group discussions. The first session started in September 2021.

It was a concise and comprehensive talk. We hope that this teaching session will help to improve the knowledge in Family Medicine / General Practice which enable Family Doctors to provide better quality of Primary Care and at the same time to prepare the postgraduate trainee for the Professional Examination.

MAY 2022 We have another great Family Medicine Teaching Session 2. Dr Chen Thim Yoon delivered a comprehensive talk and case discussion on the Approach to Exanthematous Rash in Children. Thank you to all TRM Reps, friends and all the hardworking Family Medicine Postgraduate Trainees and participants for joining us. Thank you for your continuous support as always. The Rajakumar Movement (TRM), WONCA Asia Pacific Region (APR) organized a much awaited get together session virtually to celebrate World Family Doctor Day on 22 May 2022. The session started with an impactful opening speech delivered by Associate Professor Dato’ Dr Muhammad Husni Jamal, President of WONCA APR, followed by YDM video showcase and performances by young doctors in the region. The songs and musical pieces played were dedicated especially to all family doctors for their selfless contributions to the community. All the participants enjoyed the session very much and had a great time. Family doctors are multitalented with multi capabilities. It is heart-warming to see the great teamwork by all the young doctors.

VIRTUAL FM 360 EXCHANGE The Virtual Exchange program with Vasco de Gama Movement was organized on 19th March 2022. Two countries (Nepal and Sri Lanka) from Spice Route and two countries (Bosnia Herzegovina and Netherlands) from Vasco de Gama, had made videos to display the primary care practices in their country. It was an interactive session with proactive participants and breakout rooms.
UPDATING THE SPICE ROUTE LOGO The Spice Route logo was recreated by the WONCA Communication and PR Officer (Maria Dolores Zavala) on request. After joint consensus and approval by all the council members, the logo is now being used by all the members.
WORLD FAMILY DOCTOR DAY CELEBRATION o commemorate the WFDD on 19th May 2022, The Spice Route conducted a WONCA webinar based on the theme of WFDD “Always there to care.” The session had three speakers – one from Pakistan, Bhutan and India each. It was attended in good numbers by young doctors from the region. All the members updated their social media profiles with WFDD templates by WONCA PAGE 19

REGULAR MEETINGS The Country leads of the Spice Route Council regularly meets virtually via Skype every first Sunday of the month to discuss and plan the future activities. Also, regular CPD activities for young doctors of their respective countries have been organized by Sri Lanka, India and Pakistan by the names of The GPs’ Café, Spice Route Classroom and The Lounge, respectively. Two Meet and Greet (interaction with National Council Members) sessions by Spice Route India were also a success.

VASCO DA GAMA MOVEMENT EUROPE REGION UPDATE 2022 It's been a while, and boy have we been busy! In January we had our 7th Forum in Edinburgh in the amazing Surgeon's Halls. This is was a great success, with fantastic workshops, scientific presentations, and a brilliant opportunity for many of us to reconnect and for many new faces to be welcomed into the community! We even had a Ceilidh dance, and had a bagpiper join us to really give us a feel for Scottish Culture. All this organised by an amazing host organising committee led by Sonia Tsukagoshi, who had been working for so long even enduring a postponement and all the uncertainties of the pandemic! During the forum we also awarded the Being Young Staying Young to our alumnus Raquel Gomez Bravo. She truly reflects the values of VdGM, and because of this, she was nominated independently by two people. She is recognised for the work and time she has given VdGM over
the years, first when she was herself a member, but also for the time and effort she keeps giving us even now, being a mentor, support, and vocal supporter! We are very proud to have her as part of the community! We also welcomed new members who were supported by the VdGM Fund bursaries - Mariya Armova from Bulgaria (who also recently took on the role of National Delegate for Bulgaria) as well as Maria János Szidónia from Romania. In January we also welcomed to our team Ikbal Humay Arman from Turkey as our new Events Officer. She has had a great start and is already contributing to our team and community.

In March we celebrated International Women's Day by shining a spotlight on our recent Being Young Staying Young Award receiver, Raquel, as well as 2021's Fons Sips Outstanding Achievement Award receiver, Marina Jotic Ivanovic. Both are outstanding women who make us proud and have worked hard for women's health. This was a great success and a great collaboration! We look forward to many more of these! In April we had an online event - VdGM: Going Forward Together to reflect on our organisation, and to hear some words from wisdom from our past president, and current WONCA CEO, Harris Lygidakis. He shared his advice for creating a movement of change and we had a space to reflect on the role of our movement.
We are now in the final stages of preparation for the VdGM Pre-Conference and WONCA Europe/RCGP Conference in London in June. We are all very excited! Last but by no means least, while we have been doing a lot of work that you can all see, there has also been a lot of work behind the scenes. The most important news to share is this: we have a new name! We are now working on a new logo, a new image, and a new website, and we will share all this with you as soon as we can. But for now our new name will now be: The European Young Family Doctors' Movement (EYFDM). We look forward to our future as the same movement, growing forward, innovating, and collaborating for better primary care around our region and the world, only now with a different name.

Below, you will find a compilation of the reports presented regarding the Waynakay Movement activities during the last triennium. Representatives of countries incorporated into Waynakay participated in the vaccination for COVID-19. We've participated with active members of WONCA YDM in Mexico, and resident doctors of Family Medicine of UMF 31 in Nuevo León, sharing and learning from great leaders of the speciality worldwide. We also highllight the participation of our team in "Women leaders of Family Medicine in the IberoAmerican region", addressing the issue of Women in the Health Sector and Women's Health, representing Latin America from the perspective of the Family Medicine residency. Dr Brando Cantú was the representative of Waynakay Mexico at the Global Health Summit 2021 of the #AAFP (American Academy of Family Physicians) and young family doctors around the world, generating networks and sharing knowledge. Waynakay is committed to patient education. Therefore, we have created explanatory videos about the proper self-monitoring of glycemic levels and sharing dietary recommendations. Dr Janeth Domínguez, in Mendoza, Argentina, shared information about the Certification of the Family Physician in Mexico, the way of working in family health studies and the benefits of being part of the Colegio de Medicina Familiar del Estado de Nuevo León.
Waynakay is always looking for continuous medical development and update, which is why we have given ourselves the task of conducting online courses focused on family doctors and staff of first-level care . The programmes have academic endorsement from the Universidad de Monterrey. In addition, we were present at the 3rd Congress of Family Medicine, Saltillo 2022, with the participation of Dr Brando Cantú, Dr Janeth Domínguez and Dr Alejandro Saldaña, whom highlighted the role we have as family doctors in the comprehensive approach to the elderly. In Mexico, a quarterly newsletter was published under the editorial coordination of Dr Clara Gómez. The issue includes reviewed articles, Waynakay members experiences in their professional practice, and trimestral reports. We have had several conversations with the community to provide information concerning the vaccine against Sars Cov 2. In addition, we created informational videos aiming to clear doubts and encourage the population to get vaccinated. We have created the Instagram and Facebook page of @waynakaypanama, as we consider these digital platforms crucial channels to boost the movement promotion.

The two organizations have worked together over many years through a cordial and enriching ongoing dialogue. In formalizing this collaborative relationship, the IHF’s network of hospital leaders is brought together with WONCA’s network of medical professionals interested in quality improvement in healthcare. Increased collaboration will create mutual benefits for the institutions and their members. Examples of activities include the crosspromotion of initiatives and events, the invitation for WONCA representatives to participate in partner sessions at the IHF’s annual World Hospital Congress, as well as the opportunity to explore areas for joint actions and publications (statements, position papers, research, etc.). WP ON WOMEN & FAMILY MEDICINE AFRICA HOSTS WEBINAR TO CELEBRATE WFDD2022 The WONCA Working Party for Women and Family Medicine (WWPWFM) Africa Region – referred to here as WWPWFMA – has supported and advocated for women family physicians in Africa since 2009. WWPWFMA held a webinar on May 19th to celebrate World Family Doctors Day. Titled “The Uniqueness of Women Family Doctors: Always There to Care”, it featured three speakers who gave different perspectives on what makes women family doctors unique. The speakers were: • Taiwo Soyinka Consultant Family Physician/Deputy Chairman Medical Advisory Committee, Clinical Services, University College Hospital (Nigeria) • Aramide Oteju Consultant Family Physician, District Clinical Lead, Partners in Health (Sierra Leone) • Joy Mugambi Consultant Family Physician, VP East/Central/South Africa, Commonwealth Association (Kenya).

Dr Oteju then gave a pictorial overview of her life as a woman family doctor in Sierra Leone. From being paid with a live chicken and travelling on impassable roads, to eating the harvest from her garden and seeing new projects come alive, she showed the good and the bad of her unique life as a woman family doctor. Dr Mugambi took us down memory lane and told the audience how she decided to become a family doctor. She showed the evolution of family medicine in Kenya over more than a decade, from being the only woman resident in her department to the current situation where there appear to be almost equal numbers of men and women.
The webinar was moderated by Temi Ilori and opened by WONCA President, Dr Anna Stavdal, who spoke about the Working Party and congratulated the Africa region on organizing the webinar to mark the date. The WWPWFMA Lead, Ajike Oladoyin, then welcomed everyone to the webinar and spoke about the vision and objectives of the WWPWFM. The WWPWFM Chair, Mimi Doohan, and Amanda Barnard, a former Chair, gave goodwill messages, while the WONCA Africa Region Chair, Dan Abubakar, also joined the event. The first speaker, Dr Soyinka, kicked off the presentations by approaching the topic from an academic viewpoint, defining family medicine and talking about what makes women family

She also paid tribute to some of the doctors who mentored her, a few of whom – Amanda Barnard, Kate Anteyi and Prof. Gulnaz Mohamoud, the first woman Professor of Family Medicine in East Africa – were in attendance. It was a well-attended and interesting event - at the peak there were 100 people logged in to the Zoom meeting, with several more watching it live streamed on Facebook. Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive.

PLANETARY HEALTH CHAPTERS, NOW IN GENERAL MEDICINE TEXTBOOKS In Italy and Brazil landmark chapters on Planetary Health were recently published. Respective authors Dr Alice Serafini and Dr Enrique Enrique Falceto de Barros comment on their chapters: Alice notes that the publication of this textbook has been quite a revolution in Italy, both because the last textbook of Family Medicine had been published more that twenty years before and because the two editors, young and female family doctors, chose to include new chapters and
themes that well describes the values and ideas of the new generation of italian family physicians. The cover image of the textbook, a physician riding a bike with the doctor bag in the back and a digital map on the background, well describes these values and could be seen as the first Planetary Health endorsement of the textbook.

Alice wrote the chapter denominated “Health and/is the environment”, in which, following the invitation of Professor Per Fugelli “The patient Earth is sick. Global environmental disruptions can have serious consequences for human health. It's time for doctors to give a world diagnosis and advise on treatment” the health impact of different types of pollution (air pollution, indoor pollution) and climate change is described with concise and simple words, to be discussed with patients. In addition, the last part of the chapter is dedicated to the impact of the healthcare sector on the environment, and simple strategies to achieve a greener family medicine practice, that range from using a bicycle to perform house calls to avoid overprescribing, are presented. Enrique understands that new Planetary Health chapter in a Brazilian reference primary care textbook consolidates this agenda.(1) The shift from the Holocene to the new Anthropocene epoch (human great accelerating geological impact on the planet) with its consequences to all life on the planet has been recognized as a significant subject to Brazilian family doctors which are increasingly understanding that their practice is already person-centered planetary health care. (2) In fact, Planetary health and Climate Change underscore the urgent need to prioritize primary care based Universal Health Coverage. (3) Research is needed to better understand how it could be effectively used in the clinic context to improve patients and community health and attitudes towards environmental health. A promising method that I have implemented in my clinic is a “one minute for the planet”, (4) whenever appropriate. Yesterday a) I explained to a mother and her daughter that smoke from our forest fires (agriculture techniques) and wood stoves exacerbates their asmath, b) showed that our citizen science air
air health APP monitor (5) (recently implemented in my clinic) could help them avoid pollution exposure, and c) quickly linked it to climate change and deforestation. These are pathways that other family docs could adapt and pave as well.” Associate Professor Dr Ozden, chair of the Wonca Working Party on the Environment, says that “Environmental medicine, according to traditional texts, is a clinical specialty. It is still in its early stages of development as a branch of internal medication, in the form of synthesis, a detailed environment of branches such as paediatrics, geriatrics, science of physiology, biochemistry, and epidemiology will develop.(6) As the holistic approach is one of the features of family medicine discipline, planetary health is also one of the responsibilities of Family Physicians(FPs)/General Practitioners (GPs). (7,8) Ozden wrote the chapter denominated “In the Family Medicine Practice, Sustainable Practices for Planetary Health”, in which, following the invitation of Professor Dr Serap Çiftçili (Marmara University-Department of Family Medicine) of special edition of “Management of the Practice in Family Medicine”. Last year, the chapter titled "Covid-19 Planetary Health and Family Medicine" was published. In conclusion, projects, researches could be designed with a primarycare-centered teaching technique (problem solving, learning by making innovations, etc.) to find out more useful methods in environmental education that we believe will be valuable. Furthermore, employing these strategies may raise FPs/GPs' environmental awareness and attitude. This organised paradigm requires evidence-based references and textbooks written by colleagues who have integrated planetary health into their daily practises among national and international levels. WELCOME MESSAGE My dear Friends and Colleagues, I am Dr Dan Abubakar, the WONCA Africa Region President and the Chairman of the Host Organising Committee for the 7th WONCA Africa Region conference taking place in Abuja, Nigeria from 24th to 26th November 2022 at the NAF Conference Centre. The conference is tagged “WONCA Abuja 2022” I welcome you all to the event which promises to be very exciting and afford us the opportunity to meet physically, network, discuss and implement positive changes. It will be the second time Nigeria is hosting this event, the first was held here in Abuja 21 years ago. BESROUR CENTRE FOR GLOBAL FAMILY MEDICINE LEARNING MODULE The COVID-19 pandemic has caused the largest and most rapid disruption to the practices and training of family physicians. It has revealed gaps in the capacity of our health care systems, but it has also led to a surge in resiliency, innovation, and gained experience as primary care providers and educators adapt to this new paradigm. The Besrour Centre for Global Family Medicine is excited to launch the 2nd module to the FM Pivot Educational Initiative. It has been developed by a team of global Besrour Centre partners to help family physicians and family medicine educators prepare for similar challenges in the future within their own contexts. Our module “Chronic Disease Management during the COVID-19 Pandemic: Challenges and Opportunities” is now available for free. The online module aims to apply global experience in adaptations of chronic disease management during the pandemic to improve quality and efficiency of care.

Series of five modules focus on global health emergency competencies with five themes: Community-based research, chronic disease, mental health, virtual education and disaster preparedness. MCGILL FMER: INTERNATIONAL AWARDS IN FAMILY MEDICINE EDUCATION RESEARCH The McGill Family Medicine Education Research Group (FMER) is proud to announce the sponsorship of ‘The Pierre Pluye International Mixed Methods Thesis and Dissertations Awards in Family Medicine Education’ to celebrate the original and influential contribution of Dr. Pierre Pluye, founding member of the FMER, to the advancement of mixed methods research and mixed studies reviews in general, and of the family medicine education field of inquiry in particular. These awards are aimed to distinguish the work of promising new researchers committed to the advancement of science in family medicine education research around the world. As of the academic year 2021-2022, two academic awards – one for the best MSc thesis, and one for the best PhD dissertation – will therefore be granted by an Award FMER Evaluation Committee chaired by Dr. Pluye. The committee will include at least two other FMER researchers, and two FMER-affiliated graduate students (one MSc student and one PhD student or candidate). ELIGIBILITY
Submission period: May 1st to August 31st, 2022. Candidates must have completed their thesis or dissertation no earlier than two academic years prior submission, i.e., before August 31st, 2020. The thesis or dissertation must meet 3 criteria: a)be related to research in family medicine education; b)must uses mixed methods in empirical research and/or literature review; c)be written in English or French.
APPLICATION – PROCEDURE
Applications must include the five documents detailed below. Incomplete applications will be disregarded: • A cover letter in which the candidate clearly indicates the award s/he is applying for (thesis or dissertation);introduces him/herself, the program and institution in which s/he graduated, as well as his/her research supervisors; and briefly describes the investigation conducted. • An abstract of maximum 500 words that summarizes the thesis/dissertation. Particular attention should be given to the description and justification of the mixed methods (empirical research and/or review) adopted in accordance with GRAMMS (Good Reporting of Mixed Methods Studies), and of the major theoretical, empirical, methodological, and practical contributions to the sciences of family medicine education. • A copy of the thesis in PDF format. • An updated version of the candidate’s Curriculum Vitae. • A letter of support from the candidate’s principal research supervisor (specifying that the thesis has been approved to obtein a PHD Degree.
