Celebrating female trailblazers at the forefront of ESG

Women of the Future: 50 Rising Stars in ESG celebrates the talented female trailblazers and role models aged 35 and under from around the world who are at the forefront of ESG. Our campaign showcases 50 brilliant leaders working across different aspects of ESG who have made a lasting and positive impact on their organisations, environment and wider society. We share their stories, inspiring other women to be a force for good, and shed light on the positive examples of innovation, creativity and talent.

WHAT IS ESG IN THE EYES OF THE WOMEN OF THE FUTURE PROGRAMME?

ESG is a wide-ranging and fast-moving field, which stands for Environmental, Social and Governance. It provides a framework for assessing how a company is performing against its commitments to shape a better world. The Women of the Future Programme is a platform that unlocks a culture of kindness and collaboration among leaders. Our portfolio of events and projects support and celebrate the successes of women.

Led by Pinky Lilani CBE DL, we have built a remarkable, informal community of influential women determined not only to build professional and personal relationships with one another, but to be advocates for an exciting new generation of talent.

I am thrilled to present this year’s 50 Rising Stars in ESG list, in partnership with Tesco.

This is the second year for our powerful Rising Stars in ESG campaign, and it remains laser-focused on exceptional leaders who are driving progress in Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance (ESG) worldwide. These visionary leaders are effecting measurable change through their work, inspiring meaningful transformations in our communities, businesses and at government level.

Together with our judges, I have been absolutely blown away by our 2023 superstars. Tackling the challenges of our times head-on – including working to end gender-based violence, combating plastic pollution, and driving reforms in energy, education, housing and infrastructure – these leaders are a guiding light, even when change seems to be near impossible.

The 50 Rising Stars in ESG list provides an important opportunity to amplify the work and voices of these trailblazers and to connect leaders in ESG across the world. You all deserve centre stage. Former British Ambassador to the United States

Lord Darroch is a retired UK civil servant and life peer in the House of Lords. His diplomatic career spanned over 40 years, primarily focused on national security and European policy. Most recently, Lord Darroch served as British Ambassador to the United States (2016–2019). Prior to this, he was National Security Adviser to Prime Minister David Cameron (2012–2015). He has also held a wide range of positions all over the world, including Private Secretary to Minister of State for the Middle East and Head of the News Department at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

Nana is the Managing Partner and Co-founder of Africa Legal Associates (ALA), a Ghana-based, pan-African corporate law firm. She has over 18 years of legal and advisory experience, specialising in corporate governance, banking, and petroleum law. Nana has advised multinational companies and leading international businesses operating across Africa on corporate and legal issues. Prior to founding ALA, Nana was Head of the Legal Department and Company Secretary for United Bank for Africa in Ghana.

NATALIE BLACK CBE

His Majesty’s Trade Commissioner for Asia Pacific

Natalie is the UK’s first His Majesty’s Trade Commissioner for Asia Pacific and the UK’s Senior Economic Official to ASEAN. Based in Singapore, she leads the UK’s trade and investment strategy and operations across 15 markets. Natalie has launched the UK’s first Digital Trade Network, initiated the UK’s first Digital Economy Agreement (with Singapore) and has previously served as Deputy Head of the Number 10 Policy Unit where she championed the UK’s tech sector.

KAREN DOHERTY Retail Director, Tesco

Karen is Retail Director at Tesco, responsible for 530 stores in the North of England and Scotland. Karen has worked at Tesco for 28 years and held many senior roles across the operational business, as well as strategic roles at head office and Tesco Bank.

MIRIAM GONZALEZ DURANTEZ International Trade Lawyer & Founder, Inspiring Girls

Miriam is an international trade lawyer and the Founder and Chair of Inspiring Girls, a global charity operating in 20 countries, dedicated to raising the aspirations of young girls by connecting students with female role models. Miriam currently leads the trade practice of US law firm Cohen & Gresser. She is Deputy Chair of the Supervisory Board UBS Europe SE, a member of the European Council on Foreign Relations, and a member of the International Advisory Board of the Círculo de Empresarios in Spain.

DR MUKUND RAJAN Chairman, ECube Investment Advisors

Mukund is Chairman of ECube Investment Advisors, a first-of-itskind platform created in 2019 to catalyse ESG changes in corporate India. Throughout his 23-year career, he has held a number of senior executive positions within the Tata Group, where he has served as the first Brand Custodian, Chief Ethics Officer, Chairman of the Tata Global Sustainability Council, and Member of the Group Executive Council at Tata Sons. Mukund is the Chairperson of the Environment Committee for the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry.

JOSIE ZHANG President, Burberry China

Josie holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Management from the University of Westminster. She has led Burberry China since 2016 when she joined the company. Prior to Burberry, she served at Christian Dior Couture and Zara as the Regional Director. Josie has a proven track record with over 20 years of experience.

Junior Policy Fellow, Imperial College London; COP27 President Youth Envoy, COP27 Presidency

Omnia is a medical doctor and the first Youth Envoy for the President of COP27. Her passion for addressing climate change and health led her to engage in various initiatives, including delivering climate and health awareness sessions and leading student delegations to UN climate conferences. As a Junior Policy Fellow at the Institute of Global Health Innovation, she researches the intersection of climate change and mental health, driven by the belief that her responsibilities as a doctor include protecting and promoting the health of both people and planet.

Omnia’s work at the interface between climate change and health is opening the way for promising new developments in multiple settings. Her capacity to galvanise collective action led her to be the first ever youth envoy for a climate COP meeting: she was responsible for being the voice of the planet’s young people at climate COP27 in Egypt. Omnia is an inspiring presenter who helps others understand the links between climate change and health, and feel able to take action.

ALYA ANNABI | MOROCCO Founder, GreenPush

Alya founded GreenPush to inspire, educate and engage the next generation of sustainability champions by developing programmes that help businesses and individuals to adopt sustainable behaviours. By organising free workshops, holding sustainability talks and creating neighbourhood chat groups to reduce waste and increase sharing, Alya has impacted over 400 people across Singapore and Bali, with more than 4,000 items shared, borrowed or rescued. To further promote sustainability, she also volunteers, mentors and serves as an ambassador for a number of initiatives.

Alya is a passionate sustainability change agent who wants to help businesses implement more sustainable practices – and have fun whilst doing them. She is committed to the idea that small changes can make a big impact, and is great at motivating others to act. Alya has developed the expertise and experience needed to help businesses cultivate more sustainable actions across their workforce.

SAMIRATOU BOUBACAR AMADOU | NIGER President, Girls Engaged in Medicine and other Sciences (GEMS)

Samiratou is a young Nigerian medical doctor, feminist and activist. As founder of GEMS, Nigeria’s first female-led association of its kind, she works to advocate for women’s rights and increase opportunities for young women in STEM – work that has been recognised with selection for an excellence programme funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, selection as a Mandela Washington Fellow and a UNICEF award for the organisation. Eager to learn, she pursued numerous certifications in parallel to her medical studies and is currently enrolled for a master’s degree.

Samiratou Boubacar’s vision is to make her organisation a tool for sustainable development that will change the health system of her country and other African countries and guarantee access to healthcare for all. She tackles the real challenges: the hierarchy of society; the precariousness of women; the social difficulties; the inequalities that mean few finish their schooling. GEMS is a breeding ground for women scientists.

ALLAHI BIZO ISMAËL National Coordinator, Association des Jeunes pour l'Environnement et l'Education Civique

KHALIDA ABDULRAHIM | NIGERIA Product Strategy Lead, Google

Khalida is a firm believer in the power of business for social good. Throughout her career, she has driven positive social impact in DEI, youth empowerment and financial inclusion both in her primary roles – including strategy and operations roles in Google's emerging markets incubator – and via voluntary community contributions. Khalida currently volunteers her time as a Chief of Staff Fellow at the Black Angel Group, an angel investment collective for Black professionals that invests intellectual, social and financial capital into early-stage companies around the world.

Khalida has been able to drive positive social impact. At YouTube, she enacted product and policy changes around hate speech, animal abuse, and climate change misinformation to keep users safe online and drove an inclusive advertising initiative to help brands engage with minority creators and their audiences. At Google's Next Billion Users, she built products to cater for the needs of an often overlooked segment of users: African users. In her current role, she focuses on young users and how tech can be built appropriately for their needs.

AMMY ABRAHAM Community Fellow, One Young World

ASAFIKA MPAKO | SOUTH AFRICA

Communications Coordinator for Southern Africa, Afrobarometer

A passionate advocate for building inclusive and equitable communities, Asafika has over 10 years’ experience working as a volunteer and an NGO activist for social justice issues, with her current role at Afrobarometer supporting the development of research to advocate for policy changes and innovation. Her deep interest in solving complex matters of local and continental significance, and her focus on transformative, people-centred development, have already attracted much recognition, most recently in the form of a Mandela Washington Fellowship.

Asafika has proven herself to be hardworking, thoughtful and intelligent. She has often expressed her commitment to being a positive influence and improving South Africa, and has a desire to contribute towards creating a more just and inclusive society. She has already distinguished herself as an exceptional leader.

JESSICA DEWHURST | SOUTH AFRICA

Founding CEO, Justice Desk Africa (JDA)

JDA is an award-winning NPO that has reached over two million people in its pursuit of positive social and political change, through work in human rights education, children's rights and ending gender-based violence. As JDA’s founding CEO, Jessica is passionate about equipping people with the tools, resources and platforms to access their fundamental rights and freedoms. In this role, she facilitated a partnership with the World Summit of Nobel Peace Prize Laureates and the Queen's Commonwealth Trust.

Justice Desk Africa has done incredible work with its Youth Ambassadors and has had tremendous success. To put it simply, they get the work donefrom having stopped instances of human trafficking; successfully advocating to build infrastructure; and implementing higher levels of policing in their communities. They have campaigned against tampon tax which encouraged legislative change; have helped end child marriages in their respective countries; helped women and girls back into schools; and championed the end of corporal punishment at home and school.

LEBOGANG NKOPODI | SOUTH AFRICA Project

Lead & Director, Ask An Elder NPC

Lebogang is a cause-driven and innovative entrepreneur committed to providing marginalised communities with access to economic opportunity. She is Co-founder of Zabantu Creatives, as well as CEO of Ask An Elder, a nonprofit crowdsourcing initiative that promotes intergenerational connection, wisdom sharing and a more inclusive global history - collecting stories featuring the lived experience of BIPOC people while expanding the data available for machine learning and AI tools. In addition, Lebogang is an accounting professional and a fashion model.

Ask An Elder's vision is to build a world where the prevailing narrative within and about the BIPOC community is reflective of a progressive and dynamic society - a world where there is a more diverse media landscape both in the digital economy and mainstream media. This is in alignment with Lebogang's goal of creating inclusive historical records and providing marginalised communities with access to economic opportunity. With a focus on improving the lives of people in her community, Lebogang's plans include a range of programmes and policies that she hopes will help uplift and empower those who have been marginalised or disadvantaged.

SAIDAH NASH CARTER Director, Ask An Elder

WENDY MLOTSHWA | SOUTH AFRICA Investment

Specialist, ESG, Ninety One

As an environmental scientist with nine years’ experience working in the advisory and finance sectors, and multiple postgraduate degrees and certifications in development finance, ecological science and ESG, Wendy is intent on tackling climate change challenges across the economic landscape, its institutions and its players. In her current role at Ninety One, she uses her expertise to help mitigate climate risks while deploying infrastructure to develop low-income countries and marginalised societies, with the Emerging Africa Infrastructure Fund her primary focus.

Wendy is instrumental in developing ESG tools and systems that we utilise to understand the ESG risk associated with the transactions we are involved in. Her role is critical as we invest in jurisdictions where local regulations are underdeveloped, and international best standards need to be implemented and complied with. Wendy has always demonstrated enthusiasm towards educating the parties as implementing ESG best practices is something she is passionate about.

BINYU ZHAO | CHINA

Sustainable Investing Analyst, Fidelity International

Binyu serves as the Sustainable Investing Portfolio Adviser for one of the company’s Asia Article 9 funds. In her role, Binyu guides Chinese companies on their sustainability journeys, most notably working with Anhui Conch, a leading cement producer. Her guidance in addressing their ESG challenges and improving renewable utilisation demonstrates how responsible stewardship can drive positive change while delivering returns.

Binyu is a valued member of our sustainable investing team, leading and contributing to our ESG efforts with investee companies and producing thought leadership representing Fidelity across the markets in which we operate. Binyu has been highly influential in working with investee companies on their approach to ESG in order to move the dial and make positive change, not only for the organisations themselves but for the environment and impacted communities.

ERNESTINA ZHU (XINYI) | CHINA

Chief Public Relations Office, Himylink; Visiting Lecturer, University of Law; Researcher, University of Manchester

Ernestina is conducting PhD research at the University of Manchester in NFT and digital society. She is also a visiting lecturer at the University of Law in cybercrime and media crime, and a tutor at the Manchester Metropolitan University in Marketing, Retail and Tourism. Ernestina is Chief Public Relations Officer at Himylink, a startup based in California. Her research has had a profound impact through her podcast, Digitalization, a show about digital sociology.

Ernestina is a visiting lecturer, PhD researcher and Chief Public Relations Officer. She has achieved so much that inspires all of us. It has been my great pleasure to work with her and to celebrate her achievements!

NICOLAS HE TIAN Co-founder of Himylink

NIDHI SANDEEP VASAIKAR | INDIA

Asia Pacific Regional Partnerships Manager, Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC)

Hailing from a small Indian village, Nidhi overcame obstacles to become her community’s first aerospace engineer and went on to become a STEM ambassador and SDG activist after facing gender disparity in the industry. She holds senior positions at both SGAC and MVA and works on various projects and with multiple global initiatives to promote quality education and gender equality in the aerospace sector, especially in Asian countries.

As an Aerospace Engineer, Nidhi has first-hand experience of Indian defence and space systems, including working on the BrahMos Missile Airframe, Chandrayaan-2 Cryogenic engine, Nasa Moon Rover and Nasa Mars Rover… She has a good grasp of the key issues, as well as the need for international cooperation to create a win-win environment for all countries.

IRENE LOCK SOW MEI | MALAYSIA Senior Process Engineer,

PETRONAS

Irene is a multi-award-winning engineer leading global projects in engineering design, technology improvement and digital transformation, with specialist expertise in water technology and energy sustainability. Outside the workplace, she volunteers in a number of capacities promoting sustainability, engineering ambitions and social responsibilities. Irene also co-founded Recycle3Go, a waste recycling app promoting effective waste management and environmental sustainability.

Anchored on professional ethics and outstanding leadership, Irene’s contributions towards ESG are too numerous to be summarised in a single story. Aligned with Irene’s vision to promote clean energy, Irene is recognised as the focal pioneer to drive the transition from EURO 2M towards EURO 5 standard fuel, containing less sulphur and carbon monoxide emissions compared to its predecessors. Passionate about reducing carbon footprint, Irene has led the design of one of the largest cogeneration plants in Southeast Asia.

SERENE LOCK SOW MUN | MALAYSIA

Senior Lecturer, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS

Serene is a multi-award-winning engineer known for her commercialised invention that has assisted the oil and gas industry in Southeast Asia to achieve sustainable, clean and cost-effective natural gas sources. In her current role, her research focuses on STEM advancement, using computational inventions and digital solutions to address climate, sustainability and education issues. Serene also leads 10 industry and national grants for contaminants removal, works with the WWF to combat plastic pollution and advocates for women in science and engineering.

Inspired to enhance the advancement of STEM, Serene serves voluntarily as a speaker, mentor and judge for varying exhibitions and competitions and inspires younger generations in applying their creativity to solve real industry problems. Apart from day-to-day capacity, she is also a strong advocate in promoting women’s empowerment in STEM.

KHINE ZAR THWE | MYANMAR

Application Engineer, Rakuten; Founder, Women in AI Myanmar; Founder & Organiser, Thingaha Charity Group

Khine Zar, a MEXT Scholarship recipient with two engineering master’s degrees, works as an application engineer at Rakuten. Passionate about DEI in the tech industry, she founded the Myanmar chapter of Women in AI, an NPO that helps empower women and minorities in the artificial intelligence and machine learning industry. She now serves as Technical Programme Director for the APAC chapters. In addition, she’s the founder of Thingaha Community, a charity that provides educational resources to rural children in Myanmar.

Khine Zar plans to expand the programme to reach more students in need and to introduce new initiatives such as a scholarship programme for students who excel in their studies. Her work is making a significant impact on the lives of these children, as well as the volunteers who want to give back to society. She is passionate and dedicated to improving the lives of children in Myanmar.

MYO THIDA Lecturer, Computer Engineering Department, Chiang Mai University

AYESHA NOOR FATIMA | PAKISTAN Young Development Fellow, Ministry of Planning, Development and Special Initiatives, Government of Pakistan

Ayesha has made a substantial contribution in promoting social justice, her work recognised with the LeadNext Fellowship 2023. She has spearheaded the national #StopGBVPK campaign, impacting over 1.97 million people to combat gender-based violence (GBV), and also developed Pakistan's first-ever citizen's guide for countering GBV, which included pro-women laws and support mechanisms. Ayesha has also developed other pioneering initiatives including an anti-bullying policy and a rehabilitation programme for homeless children.

Ayesha’s determination to make a positive impact in her field and society, her focus on gender equality, and her plans to build networks and collaborations make her stand out. Her passion for helping women prisoners and applying a gender lens to national policies will undoubtedly bring about positive changes in the ESG field and beyond.

EISHA MEHTAB | PAKISTAN Founding President, The Mirror

A passionate advocate for mental health and feminism, Eisha founded The Mirror – a youth-led NGO tackling gender violence in Pakistan. Her work in confidence building, consent education, self-defence campaigns, and women’s empowerment has impacted over 400 school children, 300 changemakers and 2,500 followers. She recently founded Mindfully, a platform for mental health conversations and curriculums, and, in addition, serves as a mentor, mindfulness instructor and a UN Women's 30 for 2030 member.

Over the years, The Mirror has grown to become one of the most prominent NGOs in Pakistan, attracting 300+ youth and volunteers from Kashmir to Karachi, impacting students, young children, and adults alike with its many successful campaigns and projects. Eisha also recently launched Mindfully, a platform where she plans to engage in critical conversations surrounding mental health and develop a curriculum framework to be taught from primary school levels to college-going youth.

BILLIE DUMALIANG | PHILIPPINES

Co-founder, Masungi Georeserve Foundation

Billie is co-founder and trustee of the Masungi Georeserve Foundation, an environmental conservation organisation protecting a threatened karst ecosystem through education, protection and geotourism. Today, her team heads up the Philippines’ largest privately led reforestation initiative, covering 2,700 hectares of degraded watershed areas. Her work, which has significantly influenced national policies and discourse on forest protection, sustainable tourism and climate action, has been recognised with multiple accolades, including selection for the Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia list.

When Billie convened the coalition, I witnessed her exemplary ability to bring different groups together to generate action from decision-makers and to build wider public support of environmental efforts. Her creativity and social media savvy have likewise turned traditionally overlooked subjects, such as biodiversity and forest fires, into national news headlines.

NUR ATIKAH AMALINA BINTE MOHD ZAINI | SINGAPORE

Senior Program Manager, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, EMEA, Amazon

A DEI expert with global management and multi-industry experience, Atikah currently leads Amazon’s strategic programmes in talent acquisition across the UK, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. Xiu Jing has a track record of working in tax and finance. In 2017, after a sixmonth secondment by PwC to Myanmar, Xiu Jing was moved by the poverty situation in Myanmar and looked into opportunities to switch to working in the microfinance sector. In 2018, she moved to Myanmar and took the role of Treasury Manager for VisionFund Myanmar, the Myanmar operations of the microfinance arm of World Vision. During her stint, she managed to raise around USD 40 million for the local operations to help impact approximately 200,000 clients in Myanmar in less than two years.

Yaichompoo is known for her pioneering work in sustainable building design and has initiated numerous projects that support sustainable architecture, construction and community development. She developed the Green Design and Construction Standards for L.P.N, which resulted in 34 sustainable condominium projects, and played a vital role in the development of Thailand's Building Energy Code law, which led to reduced electricity costs for 140 buildings. In addition, Yaichompoo heads up her own sustainable design architecture firm.

Only 4.1% of young adults with a learning disability or autism spectrum condition in the UK are in paid employment. Taylor's childhood on international waters sparked her passion for marine science, leading her to pursue academic and research opportunities in the field. Now, at the age of 28, she is the key field expert in the Isle of Man, the first entire country to be accorded UNESCO Biosphere status. In her current government role, Taylor developed the Isle of Man's Marine Monitoring Strategy, studying the impact of climate change and human activity on marine resources. This contribution to long-term sustainability is the result of both her scientific credentials and advocacy skills.

Taylor has developed a marine monitoring strategy and deployed a marine monitoring buoy off the south of the Isle of Man which will help scientists understand the impact of climate change and human activity on Manx waters… This monitoring station will continue one of the longest marine time series in Europe, dating back to 1954. Taylor has a passion for the marine environment and is an inspirational leader for future generations.

GITANJALI RAO | UNITED STATES Student, Young Innovator, Author and STEM Promoter

Gitanjali is an inventor, aspiring scientist, author, speaker and promoter of STEM worldwide. Her innovations, including a lead contamination detection tool, an anti-cyberbullying service, and her inspiring STEM workshops for students, have earned her numerous accolades including TIME’s Kid of the Year, selection for the Forbes 30 Under 30 in Science list, and appointment as a UNICEF Youth Advocate. In addition, Gitanjali supports refugee students, fundraises for educational resources and aims to influence K–12 education with a focus on innovation.

Gitanjali has a vision to influence a K–12 Innovation curriculum in addition to continuing her research and education on social innovation and human-centred products that are inexpensive and accessible. She is a bright light and brings hope to many young people by empowering them with the knowledge and materials necessary to achieve their dreams. Gitanjali's work with youth around the globe is a lifeline for many, especially for youth who are displaced and have lost hope like those in the Kakuma refugee camp.

MARIAL LEWIS | AUSTRALIA Founder & Principal Lawyer, Crossover Law Group

Marial is a prominent Australian immigration lawyer and Forbes 30 Under 30 listee, as well as the founder of Crossover Law Group – an innovative, convention-challenging NewLaw firm that has received significant recognition for its work in migration law. She focuses on immigration detention matters and advocates for refugees and those affected by wars. With a passion for incorporating technology, transparency, and compassion in the legal industry, she aims to help create the ‘lawyer of the future’ and empower self-represented clients through technological tools.

Ms Lewis is an incredibly accomplished young lawyer who has a clear passion for access to justice for all. She shows a determination to assist those in need and is trying to make a difference in migration law by applying her skills to the clients and their difficult situations, not only for individuals but also in the global arena.

SOUTH AMERICA

OLIVIA BORGUE | ARGENTINA

Head of Space Engineering, OffWorld

Since pursuing a PhD in spacecraft design, Olivia has been a fierce advocate for space democratisation, striving to develop ultra-low-cost satellite and spacecraft systems accessible to developing nations and organisations with low economic resources. In her current role at OffWord, she leads the design, manufacturing, and quality assurance of OffWorld's lunar ice processing units. Olivia also organises space and technology outreach events and volunteers for the Initiative for Interstellar Studies, giving public lectures about spacecraft design.

Dr Borgue’s latest scientific work is in the area of ultra small satellites, where she developed intersatellite communication terminals for these satellites. This development is not only a technical achievement but also an outstanding step towards bringing new, low-resources actors to the space industry. I see the contribution of this development to the democratisation of space through remote sensing with ultra small satellites. Nowadays, she strives for space democratisation through low-cost commercial microgravity systems for biotech research.

CAROLINA GARCÍA ARBELÁEZ | COLOMBIA

Global Sustainability and Innovation Director, AB InBev

Carolina believes that entrenching ESG strategies within the business sector is key to tackling the most pressing sustainability challenges. At AB InBev, she heads up water stewardship projects in Central and South America, has secured over 10 million USD in public funding for sustainability initiatives, and co-leads the company’s startup accelerator. In addition, Carolina has worked with the WWF in international climate negotiations and is the founder of a sustainable children’s fashion startup.

Carolina dreams of accelerating the world’s shift towards a regenerative future, changing business as usual by doing it the right way, not the easy way. She believes that both innovation and radical collaboration can achieve this. This is why she is now co-leading the 100+ Accelerator, the open innovation platform that AB InBev launched in 2018 and then was followed by Coca-Cola, Colgate-Palmolive, and Unilever. Through this partnership, four of the largest consumer goods companies in the world open their supply chains and leverage their teams to work with startups to maximise collective impact.
