Looking for Volunteers to Assist in Managing the Geese Population in Westlake
Goose addling is the process of finding active nests, monitoring their progress, and ultimately ending the potential for hatching.
Our DNR permit allows a set number of nests that may be addled during the nesting season which officially begins March 1st and ends May 29th. We are required to report the number of nests and eggs addled by June 8th.
We begin by observing pairing activity in the wetlands and, with permission, the golf course and note nesting locations. (The mowing of the wetlands has increased nesting as geese prefer areas where predators cannot hide - due to lack of cover. Additionally mowing has also depleted necessary habitat for birds and insects, i.e., bees.)
As the season progresses, we revisit nesting sites until it is clear the clutch of eggs is established. We then return to remove the eggs and dispose of them according to
We try to go out 2 times per week beginning in March. Volunteers should be able to walk 1 to 3 miles on uneven terrain. Geese can be aggressive, so it is best to have a partner. You should wear light colored clothes to easily identify any ticks or insects that may attach to your clothing. Preparing for Extreme Cold Weather
Here are a few tips to prepare for the cold:
Minimize travel as much as possible.
Keep a winter survival kit (see below) in your car if you must travel.
Shut off water valves in your home, , e.g. in a garage or lower level to prevent pipes from bursting.
Check on your neighbors to make sure everyone is safe.
Don’t leave pets outside for long in temps below 32 degrees, only allow short breaks, walks should be limited to 10 minutes or less, depending on your pet.

We sang Christmas Carol's led by Eric Moe, paid tribute to our dear Pat Power's for her 25+ years of dedication to Westlake Village, we enjoyed our Westlake Village Board President, Julie, saying a few words about our wonderful Westlake Community, and ended the heartwarming celebration at the Community Center with cookies, hot cocoa, Christmas music and children playing.

Westlake’s HOA board is actively seeking to re -establish the Finance Commission (Committee) and is welcoming and encouraging interested residents to submit their name to Gina in the office if they would like to serve on this important committee.

The Finance Commission's primary responsibility will be the management of reserve funds and establishing long-term financial goals, with no direct involvement in the development or ongoing oversight of the HOA's operating budget. It will however be essential for the commission and the board to maintain open and transparent communication in order to proactively address current and future funding requirements.

Management Team – Not able to attend
Open Session-Concerns were raised as to why our dues have been raised every year for the last four years. Why was the walking path done, a project we didn’t need, or the parking lots? Board members explained the walking path was a liability and it did need to be redone.
We are taking a pause this year on big projects to build our reserves. Additional lake dredging needs to be completed in 2026. The status of the pool deck is also in question.
Reminder to those present that garbage is a pass through. Dues increase is not calculated on garbage. Actual dues increase is $38/ quarter for non cul-de-sac lot owners. Inflation has hit all of our expenses as well.
Another resident paid high compliments to the Board and thanked the board members for their service.

Financial Statements & Reserves –
There will be no financial report. Jim is excused and Patrick was unable to attend.

Office Report: The office has been working on end-of-year cleanup. Updating Forms for 2025. Waiting for the 2025 coupons to start mailing.

Communications Committee / Villager: The Communications Committee continues to publish the Westlake Villager and meet monthly. The December Villager is out. We have started receiving orders for 2025 ads from some current and some new advertisers. We have decided to keep the cost of $100 the same for 2025 and can accept one off ads for $10 for one month. Anyone who wishes to advertise, but has not signed up and paid for 2025 should contact Sharon Goldsand at 815-997-2609 or send an email to wlvvillager@comcast.net. Our next committee meeting will be Monday, December 16th at 1:00 pm. at Rosie’s Coffee Company in Pecatonica.

Mr. Pecatonica High School Pageant
Mr. PHS Pageant is a male beauty pageant used to raise money for Pecatonica High School Key Club and Feeding America. Key Club is a high school service organization whose goal is to encourage leadership through serving others by volunteer work, and so much more! This year they are fundraising for Feeding America, which helps our local pantries like Northern Illinois Food Bank, which in turn helps Durand Area Food Pantry and Pecatonica Community Food Pantry!
