Inside WKU’s LLCs

A Living Learning Community (LLC) at WKU brings together students with similar academic interests on a residence hall floor on campus, with each LLC participating in activities tailored to their majors and areas of study, according to WKU’s website. There are 16 different LLCs listed on WKU’s website that incoming students can join in the 2026-2027 academic year.

“LLCs are designed to help students connect socially, succeed academically, engage with WKU faculty, staff, and administrators, and chart your course at WKU,” the website states. Students interviewed across campus all said that living in an LLC has been positive and overall beneficial to their experience at WKU.

Freshmen Maddie Mercer and Addie Harris met in the Elementary Education LLC on the first floor of Minton Hall. The two friends are now planning on becoming roommates in the upcoming fall semester.

Mercer and Harris agreed they loved

everything about being in the Elementary Education LLC. Mercer said everyone also became close friends in the Elementary Education LLC because they all had similar interests and classes together. The group really got to know each other through M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan, which made it easier for the LLC to bond once school started.

“It’s so fun because I feel like we all got so close just because we had classes together,” Mercer said.

to Mercer’s

Adding to Mercer’s point, Harris said having people with the same majors and classes in close proximity creates an environment where everyone can rely on each other in the LLC. Harris and Mercer said they can help each other with classwork.

“We work on our education and psychology stuff together because we have that class,” Harris said. “So, it’s way easier to ask questions when they’re just in the same hall rather than just having to text.”

Freshman Brianna Barco is a part of the Political Science LLC located inside Meredith Hall at WKU.

Barco said she’s had a great experience living in an LLC as a student coming to campus from out-of-state. She said she didn’t know anyone since she came to WKU from Nashville, but being in an LLC helped her meet her best friends.

“It’s already like a built-in group of friends,” Barco said. “It’s also really nice that we have classes together and group projects that we can work on at any time because we all live next to each other.”

Barco said she was surprised to see a diverse range of backgrounds and how different everyone was when she first came to her LLC. She said the diverse range of views and opinions gave the group a lot of

new things to think about and process while doing class work together.

“Keep an open mind going into the LLC because it’s a lot of new people,” Barco said as advice to incoming students.

“It’s a lot of different kinds of people, and sometimes you’re going to have to compromise, especially living so close.”

Freshman Brooke Cambron is a part of the Business LLC on the second floor of Zacharias Hall. Cambron said a lot of different activities coordinated by both students and LLC fellows have helped everyone connect in the LLC.

Cambron said some of the coordinated activities the LLC did last semester included attending a Hot Rods game together, having a pizza night and competing in a ping pong tournament.

Students in the Business LLC also sometimes host birthday parties and study sessions that everyone is invited to attend, Cambron said. She said they even made their own Business LLC group chat.

“That got a lot of the people in our LLC involved, and it was really able to let us all connect with each other and see what we’re all doing,” Cambron said.

Cambron said the LLC program has been rewarding because she was able to make new friends on her floor who have the same classes and interests as one another.

“Academically, being able to have classes with the peers that I live with every single day has been really helpful and inspiring because they’re always very helpful no matter what, especially the teachers and the LLC fellows,” Cambron said.

Freshman Luke Hughes is a part of the Media and Communication LLC in Meredith Hall. Hughes also said that living close to his classmates is beneficial because everyone holds each other accountable. He and his roommate shared the same major and had a class together last semester, so they pushed each other to get to class on time and submit assignments.

“I wake up early, and he doesn’t, and I woke him up on multiple occasions for class, so that was nice,” Hughes said.

Hughes said he advises students to join an LLC if they know what they want to major in at WKU. He said it’s better than other living options on campus, and students don’t have to worry about their housing assignments since everyone in the LLC will be there for a similar purpose.

Hughes said that having a good group of people to connect with is essential while in college, whether people share the same majors or not. He said being in an LLC

an opportunity for new students to

with new people who will help them stay on track and be accountable.

Ready to Walk2Campus? Walk2Campus LLC offers a variety of housing options. Not a fan of houses? They offer CampusWalk, the 1240 Center and Brickhouse apartments.

Landon Allen, a senior exercise science major, said choosing to lease through Walk2Campus was an easy decision. Allen resides in Brickhouse Apartments.

“I like how close to campus it is. I don’t have to worry about traffic. And if I am going to be late to class or anything, I can just walk, which is a blessing,” Allen said.

Allen said the leasing agents are great to work with. Walk2Campus offers 24/7 maintenance requests, whether it be a simple light bulb change, heating and cooling requests or plumbing issues.

Rent can vary per apartment and number of roommates. Allen said he currently pays around $550 for rent a month, but it can vary due to discounted rates that are offered occasionally.

“When it comes to budgeting, pick your top two apartments and make a pros and cons list of each. Pick the best financially smart decision (in the long run),” Allen said.

Topper Park is a luxury student apartment complex that leases four-bedroom and fourbathroom units.

Senior marketing major Abigail Hayes currently lives at Topper Park. After her tour, it became clear to her that the benefits this apartment complex offers were best for her preferences.

“Unlike some other apartments in Bowling Green, utilities and parking are included,” Hayes said. “In addition to this, they have brand new units and were very up front about their maintenance having quick responses.”

Topper Park is located less than half a mile from WKU’s main campus, which is a two-minute drive or 10-minute walk based on your preference!

“I also didn’t mind the quick drive to campus because I have a PS2 parking pass I use for work,” Hayes said.

At Topper Park, each open concept unit has a garage door in the living room that is perfect to pull open when the weather is nice!

“I live on the bottom floor, so on gamedays we keep that open and use the communal patio space,” Hayes said.

Rent at Topper Park starts at $725 a month and includes all utilities such as electric, water, trash removal, sewer and WiFi.

Hayes recommended that the best way to spend your summer is to work as much as you can so that those funds can go towards your rent and groceries.

Midtown Apartments offers an off-campus living experience while also being close enough to walk to campus. Restaurants like Hilligans and WK EL Maz are conveniently within walking distance.

“My favorite amenity would have to be the gym; memberships are so expensive nowadays, so it’s nice it’s included in my rent.”

- Liberty Pedigo

“Some factors that played into my decision to rent while looking at apartments were the location, price and most importantly, I knew I HAD to have a gym,” Pedigo said.

The apartments have an open layout design, and bathrooms are connected to the bedrooms. Midtown offers a variety of different floor plans.

“My favorite amenity would have to be the gym; memberships are so expensive nowadays, so it’s nice it’s included in my rent,” Pedigo said.

Rent is around $800 a month for her twobedroom apartment and includes all amenities, internet, utilities and a parking pass for the apartment’s parking lot. Rent will vary by room and number of roommates.

“My financial advice to any student wanting to rent: pick somewhere you know you can afford and have it on a monthly withdrawal so you don’t have to worry about missing it,” Pedigo said.

Worried about being placed in an apartment with a stranger? Worry not! Midtown offers a roommate matching service to ensure a perfect match and to enhance the college experience.

“My favorite part about my apartment is definitely my roommate! I know she wasn’t provided by Midtown, but she makes every day better, and I would advise everyone to live with roommates,” Pedigo said.

The Registry offers a plethora of amenities that are included in the rent and resident events throughout the semester.

“My favorite amenity would have to be the pool. It’s great during the summertime, and you get two guest passes so your friends can join,” Webb said.

First apartment? What you need to know

At the end of the second year, or after 60 credits, WKU students are allowed to take the next big step in housing and transition from a dorm to an apartment.

There are multiple ways to prepare for this move. Factoring in what you want from an apartment can help you decide which one is the perfect fit for you.

Sophia Brannen, a junior on the hill, prioritized several different things when searching for the right place.

“When I switched from a dorm to an apartment, my main concern was location and price. I wanted to be within walking distance of WKU,” Brannen said.

Price and location could play a significant role in your apartment search. It is helpful as a student to choose reasonable options that can save you money and time. In Brannen’s case, she didn’t want to be too far from campus, so she could walk to class and save on parking pass and gas expenses.

“Make sure you have your priorities set before you start looking so that you can narrow down all your options more easily,” Brannen said.

Some of the factors a student could consider when deciding on an apartment are what amenities are offered and what the individual unit layout is.

Brannen made sure to narrow her search, which ultimately led her to her current space at The Enclave. Brannen wanted an apartment where she had her own room, had laundry in the unit, was close to campus and under $550 a month.

Each one of those categories helped her to understand how she could navigate her living situation and how to prepare for move-in.

Kristen Barnett, a second-semester freshman, offers advice on how to start gathering your future home essentials.

“If you want decor or household items for food and dishware, you need to make an Amazon registry and send it to your family and post it on your social media,” Barnett said.

Simply putting a list of items on your friends and family’s radar gives people an idea of your goals and may incline them to offer support.

As you approach your move-in date, reach out to others to help out. Barnett didn’t have all of the support she wanted, and now looking back, she needed close friends and family to be there for her.

“Don’t be afraid to ask anyone for help and consult people; they can help you to get things done,” Barnett said.

Barnett acknowledged that having more people in her corner would lessen anxieties and that a little help goes a long way.
