Siobhan De Lange (Wits) will present data on: Role fluctuation during research interviews with participants well-known to the interviewer This project looks at interview data from one-on-one interviews conducted for a research project on the support needs of palliative care staff working within the South African public health system. As the interviewer is well-known to the participants, role fluctuation occurs throughout the interview. This project focuses on how roles and relationships affect the information obtained through the interview.

Presenter: Siobhan de Lange is a post-doctoral research fellow working with the Health Communication Research Unit at Wits University, South Africa. Siobhan’s research focuses on support and communication in palliative care, specifically within South African public health settings. She works closely with palliative care teams in Johannesburg public hospitals, conducting interviews and ethnographic observations to understand how care information is communicated between healthcare providers, patients and family members, and how communication and care can be better supported within this resource-constrained context.
