The Authors Michael Pendlebury, author the first four editions, was a member of the Department of Philosophy at the University of the Witwatersrand from January 1984 until December 2004, and was Professor and Head of the Department when he left to take up an appointment as Professor of Philosophy and Head of the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at North Carolina State University. He retired from this position in January 2004. The fifth edition was prepared by Edwin Etieyibo and Ashley Coates, both of whom are members of the Department of Philosophy at the University of the Witwatersrand. Etieyibo joined the Department in 2012 and is now Professor of Philosophy; Coates joined in 2020 and is now a Senior Lecturer.
