Porter Butts was director of the Wisconsin Union from 1928-1968. Porter often went on canoe trips to pristine wilderness destinations with his close friends. One of the trips included a particularly memorable month-long excursion in Quetico Provincial Park in Ontario, Canada where legend says the initial idea of Wisconsin Hoofers was born. In a letter to his mother, Porter writes about his comrade
“Hal” and that fateful trip.
