In our July issue, we introduce Wire Magazine’s readers to attractive cover model Channing Flynn with artistic photos taken by the incomparable David Vance. We also sit down for an interview with well-known member of our LGBTQ community George Neary, who is working to preserve the Art Deco heritage of Miami Beach and the architecture that so many people from around the world recognize as being part of the Beach’s essence. In Dining Delicious, we feature a couple of delectable salads that you can prepare during the summer salad season, when fresh flavors abound. Our photo album brings you pics from the TWIST 32nd Anniversary Party.
This month, I want to thank our loyal readers for your continued support. We live in uncertain times where people are facing numerous challenges and many in our community worry about losing some of the rights we have fought so hard to earn over the years. Some our fellow LGBTQ community brothers and sisters are even apprehensive about just being themselves. However, I want to tell you that being yourself is one of the most powerful ways to truly enjoy life. In a world that often pressures us to conform, embracing your individuality allows you to live with authenticity, confidence, and joy. When you are true to who you are—with your values, passions, and quirks—you create a life that reflects your beautiful inner truth, not someone else’s expectations.
Trying to fit into molds that don’t suit you can lead to stress, dissatisfaction, and a sense of emptiness. On the other hand, being yourself fosters self-acceptance and inner peace. It allows you to build genuine relationships because people are drawn to authenticity. When you stop pretending and start living as your true self, you attract those who appreciate you for who you really are. Moreover, being yourself opens the door to personal growth. You become more resilient, creative, and courageous when you stop fearing judgment. Life becomes more enjoyable because you are not wasting energy on maintaining a façade. Instead, you are free to explore your interests, express your thoughts, and pursue your dreams.
Ultimately, the joy of life comes from living it on your own terms. Being yourself is not just about self-expression. It is about selfrespect. It is also about giving yourself permission to be imperfect, to evolve, and to shine. When you embrace who you are, life becomes not only more meaningful but also more fun!
Cheers,

Rafa Carvajal: Where are you from and where do you live?
Channing Flynn: I was born and raised in Orlando, Florida. My parents are from Puerto Rico, and I have cultivated a relationship with the island since I was a kid. I will be moving to New York on the 1st of August.
RC: What do you do for a living?
CF: Currently, I work in content creation, as well as fitness train, and occasionally bartend on the side.
RC: What is your typical workout routine?
CF: I work out six days a week for about an hour not including cardio which is mostly incline walking. My split is a bit abnormal, but I make sure to cover every body part thoroughly. There’s just some that I prefer to give a little extra attention to. The real work is in the kitchen though.
RC: What are favorite three exercises?
CF: My three fave exercises would have to be chest presses, lat pulldowns and Arnold presses.
RC: What inspired you to model for photography?
CF: When I first got asked to try it out, and realized the story that just a still image can tell, I became obsessed.
RC: What do you like about being a model?
CF: I love expressing my body artistically. I don’t care too much about being the strongest guy in the room. Being able to pretend like I’m a marble statue or a painting is so fun.
RC: What is your favorite hobby?
CF: I really love going to see movies, plays, museums or any type of art fashion display with friends. Also being creative with friends and experimenting with photos.
RC: What is your handle for Instagram and X?
CF: My Instagram handle is @channingxflynn. My X handle is @ChanningFlynnX, but be careful that one’s a bit spicier, haha!
RC: Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine readers?
CF: Art is truly the only way humans can understand one another.

Miami Beach is world-renowned for its Art Deco architecture. Those of us who love Miami Beach do not want to see it become another unremarkable Florida seaside city full of high rises. George Neary, a well-known member of our LGBTQ community, is someone who also believes in preserving the Art Deco heritage of Miami Beach. We sat down with George to discuss his current role was Interim Executive Director of the Miami Design Preservation League (MDPL).
Rafa Carvajal: What inspired you to come out of retirement and return to the Miami Design Preservation League as Interim Executive Director after nearly three decades?
George Neary: I returned to the Miami Design Preservation League recently from retirement (after being the Executive Director from 1991-1998) as interim Executive Director because the organization needed help as the previous leader had left to run for a Commission seat. I was asked to assist while the search began for new leadership. I felt I know the City, organization and could keep the MDPL on track—and thrive while the search was being held.
RC: How has the mission or focus of the MDPL evolved since your first tenure as executive director in the 1990s?
GN: The mission of the organization has evolved to offering more history, education, lectures, tours and in-depth programs of Miami Beach as the world capital of Art Deco. That is currently happening as we have partnered with the City of Miami Beach and the Mayor’s Office/Mayor Steven Meiner and created an outdoor gallery with 34 museum quality panels, showcasing our Tropical Art Deco as the largest collection in the world! The outdoor gallery is in Lummus Park at Ocean Drive and 12th street, and is available 24 hours a day.
RC: What are the biggest challenges you are seeing during your interim leadership and how are you addressing them?
GN: The biggest challenges are currently to our Art Deco buildings, as our state government has taken away their historic protections and made them available for demolition at any moment! Something everyone in Miami Beach is united against!
RC: With your dual background in tourism and preservation how do you see these two areas complementing each other in your current role?
GN: My background is twofold: currently as the Executive Director of the Miami Design Preservation League, Greater Miami’s premier preservation organization, and for 20 years vice-president of cultural tourism & LGBTQ marketing at the Greater Miami Convention Bureau. The historic Art Deco District is world famous and a driver for Miami Beach/Miami tourism. It’s the reason the Miami City Ballet, New World
Symphony, Olite Arts, Jewish Museum, The Bass museum, The Wolfsonian museum and lots more arts groups have located here and perform here! In addition, Miami/Miami Beach are a premier global destination for gay and lesbian tourism with much to offer visitors! From international bars and restaurants, nightclubs, drag performances, film festivals, women’s events, beach parties, educational programs, and fundraising events.
RC: What are your priorities for MDPL while the organization searches for a permanent executive director?
GN: While the search is underway for the next executive director, we continue to work with the Miami Beach City Government, Greater Miami Convention Bureau, Ocean Drive Association and our many partners to promote our Art Deco hotels, restaurants, architecture and also the MIMO section/ resort architecture of the 1950’s, i.e.: The Eden Roc, Fontainebleau, Sherry Frontenac, Saxony (Faena), and our undiscovered gem The Normandy Fountain business district and the Miami Beach Bandshell and surrounding area!
RC: Looking ahead, what qualities do you believe are essential in the next full-time executive director to ensure the continued success of the MDPL?
GN: The next executive director must be versed in preservation, tourism, collaboration, culture, heritage, and city governance to be able to continue the organization’s goals of its programs and historical place in the future of Miami Beach.
RC: Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine readers?
GN: I am honored to be selected by Wire Magazine to appear in a current issue! As I have always said, “It’s not Thursday without the Wire!” I was highlighted 30 years ago on its cover, and I am thrilled to appear in Wire Magazine again!

The warmer months mean one thing: salad season is officially here. With fresh flavors abounding, now is the perfect opportunity to tap into an unexpected veggie: celery.
Celery is packed with flavor and low in calories, making it a smart choice for snacking and cooking a variety of meals throughout the day. Made up of 95% water, it’s also naturally hydrating and high in fiber to keep you feeling full and refreshed. Available year-round, an option like Dandy Celery from Duda Farm Fresh Foods redefines what celery can be –crispier, sweeter, and less stringy – through a legacy of quality, innovation, and consistency in celery cultivation since 1926.
The Fresh Salad with Grilled Strawberries and Celery, Berries and Burrata, for example, combines celery with other fresh, warm-weather favorites like strawberries, blackberries, blueberries and raspberries on a bed of arugula – topped with a sweet, citrusy dressing – for a refreshing, nourishing lunch or dinner.
Or for an Asian twist, try the Thai Lime Chicken Salad, which features celery, carrots, cucumber and poached chicken breast over a Jasmine rice base with an Asian-inspired dressing that brings a touch of heat to the table.
Besides these two recipes, you can find more recipes for salad season and beyond at DudaFresh.com.
