HEALTH & WELLNESS

YOU HAVE 30 MINUTES TO SAVE A KNOCKED-OUT TOOTH ONLY

27% OF U.S. ADULTS KNOW THAT

Most U.S. adults say they would do almost anything to avoid losing a natural tooth. Most have also put off going to the dentist when they suspected something was wrong. And some may not be aware of the dental specialists whose entire focus is helping them do exactly that. A new national survey from the American Association of Endodontists, the organization representing those specialists, finds all three of those things together at the center of how U.S. adults actually approach their dental health.

That tension runs through the entire survey. When faced with a serious tooth infection, 61% would choose a treatment that saves the tooth over extraction. Seventy-eight percent say they would do almost anything to avoid losing a natural tooth. The attachment runs deeper than appearances. It is about the tooth itself, the one that has been there your whole life, that feels irreplaceable in a way an implant or crown never quite does.

The gap is not in conviction. It is in knowing what to do.

Only 27% of U.S. adults correctly identify that a knocked-out tooth needs to be treated within 30 minutes to give it the best chance of being saved. The rest either guess wrong or have no idea how quickly the clock is running. And the specialists most equipped to help in that moment, dental professionals called endodontists whose entire focus is saving natural teeth, are known to only 44% of U.S. adults.

Cost widens the gap. Sixty percent of U.S. adults admit to having put off going to the dentist when they suspected something was wrong. The anatomy of that delay is familiar: a symptom that does not seem urgent enough, a bill that feels easier to avoid than face, an appointment that keeps getting pushed to next month. Of those who waited, 51% say it made things worse.

And then there is the fear. Root canals have a reputation that the data does not support. Asked what they believe, 28% of U.S. adults say a root canal is usually more painful than the toothache that sent them to the dentist in the first place. They have it backward. A root canal is designed to relieve that pain, not add to it, according to the American Association of Endodontists. But the perception lingers, shaped in part by a fragmented information environment where 35% of U.S. adults say they have encountered conflicting or confusing information online about procedures such as root canals.

U.S. adults feel strongly about their natural teeth, probably more than they would have predicted before being asked. They delay the care that protects them, do not know what to do when time is short, and are not always getting their information from sources that serve them well.

For a tooth that can often be saved in 30 minutes, that combination has consequences.

Methodology

American Association of Endodontists commissioned Atomik Research, a creative market research agency part of 4media group, to conduct an online survey of 2,000 adults throughout the United States. The margin of error is plus or minus 2 percentage points at a 95 percent confidence level. Fieldwork was conducted between April 3 and April 8, 2026.

PUBLISHER’S CORNER LET’S CELEBRATE PRIDE TOGETHER IN JUNE

Every June, Pride Month serves as both a celebration and a reminder of our LGBTQ community’s long journey toward equality, visibility and acceptance. What began as a response to the 1969 Stonewall uprising in New York City has grown into a global movement that honors the courage of those who fought against discrimination and demanded the right to live openly and authentically.

Pride is more than our colorful parades and joyful gatherings. It is a statement that love, identity and self-expression deserve respect and protection. For many members of our LGBTQ community, Pride Month represents a safe space where we can come together, support one another and celebrate the progress that generations of activists before us worked tirelessly to achieve. Rights such as marriage equality, workplace protections and broader social acceptance were not freely given. We must remember they were earned through decades of advocacy, sacrifice and resilience.

At the same time, Pride Month reminds us that the fight for equality is not over. Across the country, some political leaders continue to push policies and rhetoric that threaten LGBTQ rights, particularly affecting transgender youth, healthcare access and freedom of expression. These challenges make it even more important for our allies and communities to stand united in defense of human dignity and equal protection under the law. Celebrating Pride together in June is an act of solidarity!

In this month issue, we showcase some of David Vance’s beautiful paintings and drawings and chat with him about his work as an artist. David built a distinguished international career spanning over four decades, becoming especially recognized for his portrait, fashion and fine art photography. David has developed a signature style that blends glamour, sensuality and timeless elegance that also extends into his paintings and drawings.

BEAUTIFUL MALE ARTWORK

Rafa Carvajal: How did you develop an interest in drawing and painting?

David Vance: I attended Catholic school, so I was exposed to a lot of religious art.

RC: What inspired you?

DV: Beauty. My parents were vain. They were both aware of their looks. I was influenced by that. I was particularly inspired by faces and traditional beauty from the age of 10.

RC: What are your favorite painting techniques and why?

DV: To be perfectly honest, initially I leaned toward dry media… pencil, pen, pastel. It’s less demanding and a typical way to learn to see.

RC: How has your art evolved over the years?

DV: Hopefully it’s improved. (Smiling). I’ve stayed true to my original direction, focusing still on face and bodies. I have, however dabbled in watercolor, acrylics and most recently, oil.

RC: What is your favorite part of painting?

DV: With oil painting, to which I am fairly new, I love learning new ways to see and use color. I’m really still in discovery mode.

“Painting is just another way of keeping a diary.” - Pablo Picasso

RC: How do you choose your male models for your paintings?

DV: Well, I have 50+ years of photos for reference and recently I have started incorporating AI technology to create images to paint.

RC: What do you enjoy the most about painting?

DV: I’ll tell you what I like the least, the clean-up. Messy and time consuming.

RC: Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine readers about your artwork?

DV: As I mentioned, I started drawing when I was 10, encouraged by my fifth grade teacher. By the time I was 14, my parents were getting nervous that I was taking it too seriously and might end up a starving artist. LOL. They encouraged me to pursue photography instead. What they failed to understand is that art is something you carry in your soul. It will express itself eventually in whatever you do.

Why you need dental insurance in retirement.

Many Americans are fortunate to have dental coverage for their entire working life, through employer-provided benefits. When those benefits end with retirement, paying dental bills out-of-pocket can come as a shock, leading people to put off or even go without care.

Simply put — without dental insurance, there may be an important gap in your healthcare coverage.

When you’re comparing plans ...

Look for coverage that helps pay for major services. Some plans may limit the number of procedures — or pay for preventive care only.

Look for coverage with no deductibles. Some plans may require you to pay hundreds out of pocket before benefits are paid.

Shop for coverage with no annual maximum on cash benefits. Some plans have annual maximums of $1,000.

Medicare doesn’t pay for dental care.1

That’s right. As good as Medicare is, it was never meant to cover everything. That means if you want protection, you need to purchase individual insurance.

Early detection can prevent small problems from becoming expensive ones.

The best way to prevent large dental bills is preventive care. The American Dental Association recommends checkups twice a year.

Previous dental work can wear out.

Even if you’ve had quality dental work in the past, you shouldn’t take your dental health for granted. In fact, your odds of having a dental problem only go up as you age.2

Treatment is expensive — especially the services people over 50 often need.

Consider these national average costs of treatment ... $274 for a checkup ... $299 for a filling ... $1,471 for a crown.3 Unexpected bills like this can be a real burden, especially if you’re on a fixed income.

Broadway’s wildly popular musical comedy The Book of Mormon will also take over the Ziff Ballet Opera House June 9-14, bringing one of the most celebrated productions in modern theater to Miami audiences. Winner of nine Tony Awards, including Best Musical, this smash-hit production continues to captivate audiences around the world with its sharp humor, unforgettable music and outrageous storytelling.

Created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the Emmy-winning masterminds behind South Park, alongside Robert Lopez, the EGOT-winning songwriter behind Frozen, Coco and Avenue Q, The Book of Mormon has become a global phenomenon since its Broadway debut at New York’s Eugene O’Neill Theatre in 2011. Combining satirical comedy with heartfelt moments and energetic musical numbers, this uproarious show has earned standing ovations from audiences across Broadway, London and North America.

The story follows an unlikely pair of young Mormon missionaries who are sent halfway across the world to spread their faith. Their journey quickly becomes a hilarious culture clash filled with unexpected challenges, outrageous encounters and laugh-out-loud moments that have made the musical a fan favorite for more than a decade. Despite its irreverent humor, The Book of Mormon also explores themes of friendship, belief and human connection, helping it resonate with audiences far beyond traditional Broadway fans. With its award-winning creative team, catchy songs and boundarypushing comedy, The Book of Mormon will deliver an unforgettable theatrical experience when it arrives in Miami.
