THE STIGMA OF HIV Growing up in a small, very religious town outside of Pensacola, Florida, I had the privilege of being reminded that homosexuality is a sin that even God can’t forgive. As a teenager, I was also taught that God’s way of punishing homosexuals was by giving them the “gay cancer”, also known as HIV/AIDS. According to my pastor, family, classmates, and teachers, HIV/AIDS was not a universal problem; it was just a gay issue. As I came to terms with my sexuality and worked my way through all the inner homophobia, there was always one thought weighing heavily on my mind: “If I accept myself as a gay man, I must also accept that I will inevitably become HIV positive.”

Of course over the years I have written a countless amount of articles on HIV, raised funds for a number of HIV service organizations, and spent a lot of time researching the virus. The conclusion I eventually came to and still believe is that HIV is certainly not “gay cancer” or God’s way of punishing us for just being who we are. However, that does not mean that HIV is not a serious epidemic for our community. In fact, it is quite the opposite. In terms of new infections, men who have sex with men are most at risk. Among men diagnosed with HIV in 2009, 74 percent were attributed to men who have sex with men. So if HIV is not a gay disease, what is the problem?
The idea had been so engrained that I actually thought all gay men must have HIV, which made the ability to accept my sexuality incredibly conflicting. One side of me knew who I was; yet, another was telling me that I would be asking for a death sentence.
This is a question I use to ask myself when I first came out and was dealing with my sexuality. Over the years, I have met a number of people who are HIV positive and live incredible lives, accomplishing more than they could have ever imagined.
Eventually I was smart enough to see through all of the smoke and mirrors, accepted my sexuality, and at the age of 18 moved to Miami to live out and proud.
Being the inquisitive little writer that I am, I generally pose the same question to them as well, and the answer has always been relatively the same:

tile. Some only failed to use protection one time, while others never used protection at all. I’ve heard stories of people contracting the virus from their longtime partners, while others got HIV from a complete stranger. The point is that most of the stories and experiences I heard from each of these people were that they could have easily saved themselves had they only reached over and grabbed a condom. In this week’s issue, we have dedicated our cover story to someone who works on a daily basis as an HIV/AIDS advocate, changing the stigma of HIV around the world and raising funds for HIV research. Model, actor, reality star, and Project Runway contestant Jack Mackenroth made his way into the hearts and homes of the American people when he first appeared on Season 4 of Project Runway as an openly gay HIV positive man. His gorgeous smile, paired with his beautiful personality changed the way people viewed gay men living with HIV and continues to do so on a minute-by-minute basis. I got the opportunity to meet Jack over White Party Weekend and was so inspired by his work that we decided to focus on Jack, the incredible work that he does, and the HIV/AIDS epidemic at hand. I hope you will take a moment to read Jack’s story and see how HIV/AIDS is not a death sentence. On the contrary, his story reminds us all that living with HIV has nothing to do with a person’s worth, intelligence, and, as you will see in the pictures, beauty.

We’ve come a long way since HIV/AIDS first appeared on the scene 30 years ago on the West Coast of the United States. Not having any information on the newly discovered virus or the way it spread, most scientists and doctors based their assumptions on the sexuality of the first few infected people – gay men. Over the course of the past 30 years, billions of dollars in research, prevention, and treatment has somewhat diminished the idea that HIV/AIDS is a gay disease and is, in fact, an epidemic that knows no sexuality, gender, age, or race. Over the years, there have also been a number of technological advances in treatments that have made HIV a very manageable illness. However, that certainly does not mean that HIV/ AIDS isn’t a very big threat, especially for the gay community. Last week, millions of people from around the world came together to commemorate World AIDS Day, celebrate the people who work tirelessly to put an end to this deadly virus, and remember the hundreds of thousands of people we’ve lost. And for South Florida, it really hit home – at least for us at Wire Magazine. In fact, Miami-Dade ranks third in the country in terms of people living with HIV. And as for the gay community, 1 in 8 white men, 1 in 8 black men, and 1 in 12 Hispanic men in Miami-Dade are living with HIV. What makes matters worse for us is that nearly three out of four people living with HIV aren’t receiving the proper treatment required to get their viral load down to an undetectable level, which would help prevent the spread of the virus. Of course, that’s just the tip of the iceberg, since more than 20 percent of the people living with HIV don’t even know they have it or are transmitting it to their partners! Basically this means that no matter how well you know someone or how much fun it is to have sex without protection, it is important – in South Florida especially – to always play safe! Over White Party Weekend, I had the privilege of meeting one of the sexiest HIV/AIDS advocates in the world, former Project Runway contestant and model, Jack Mackenroth. Jack made his way into the hearts and homes of millions when he appeared on the show as an openly gay HIV positive fashion designer. Since then, he has made some major strides in changing the negative stigma associated with HIV and continues to show the world that being HIV positive isn’t a death sentence. Instead, he has used his status – both celebrity and HIV – to spark change all over the world. The beefed up stud recently teamed up with The American Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR) to release a super sexy calendar, featuring incredible photos of Jack in some deliciously provocative poses, and all to raise some much needed funds for the important research amfAR continues to do.

I recently caught up with Jack to get the scoop on his stint on Project Runway, living with HIV, and the gorgeous calendar. Check out what the hunk had to say: What was your experience like on Project Runway? I was a working fashion designer for 17 years before I went on the show. At the time I went on Project Runway I was design director at this company called Weatherproof. I sat at a desk and had a very good job but it was fairly boring and not very creative. Then the show Project Runway came along. I immediately fell in love with the show and went through the insane audition process. I’ve always approached life like, ‘Oh, this might be a really cool adventure. Who knows what’s going to happen?’ I had very realistic expectations and just enjoyed the process. However the process is literally torture. We shoot 14 episodes in four weeks so we never have a day off and we sleep about four hours a night. Everything is filmed and we have no help with challenges. People always ask me if we had help because there is no way you can make an outfit in 12 hours but we did. Some of the designs are jacked up and held together with glue and a prayer. The best thing was the people I met. I am still best friends with Kevin Christiana, Kit Pistol (Scarbo), and Christian Siriano. They are amazing. When did you find out you were positive and how did that affect your career path, if at all?
I’m the oldest child of three and my mom always stressed education over everything else, so that laid a great foundation. I was always very goal orientated as a child. It just continued into my adult life. I like to overachieve. I’m always working on about 15 projects at once. I work seven days a week. Even when I was struggling with my sexuality or when I found out I was HIV+ in 1989, I was still getting straight A’s and preparing for my career. That never stopped. I would be unhappy if I didn’t feel I was reaching my potential. Of course, we all have moments where we feel lost. I’ve dealt with depression and low periods in my life, but I have great friends and family and I just ride it out and have confidence that it will get better. Plus, I put on high heels and a tiara when I’m depressed. Sparkle always makes you feel better. There is obviously a negative stigma associated with HIV. Did that affect your decision to be open about being positive on the show? No! Actually it made me want to be more vocal about it. As I mentioned, I went onto the show with a healthy, realistic attitude. I knew it wasn’t “real” and I knew all I could control was my behavior and my designs. I was more focused on enjoying the once in a lifetime experience than winning. Honestly, I would have loved to win but, as you can see with past winners, winning the show doesn’t mean much. It’s more about if you are memorable. In a strange way I was memorable because I left early and because I was the first reality ‘star’ to be open about my HIV status since Pedro Zamora who passed away from AIDS in 1994. I knew I could make a massive impact on

the HIV community by being out, honest, and show that you can live a happy and full life with HIV. What has been the response to you being so open about being positive on such a public level? Aside from one woman about three years ago, who was clearly off her crazy pills, about 99 percent of the response has been amazing. I get about two to three messages on Facebook and Twitter a day from people who are struggling and/or have questions. I respond to every single one. It’s a lot of responsibility, but I take it quite seriously. I know I have changed people’s lives and even stopped people from killing themselves, which is astounding and humbling. I know it really helps a lot of people to see someone who is open about their status and doing well in their life and career. People are really touched by hearing my personal story. I’m glad I can help if they need someone to relate to. That is the most gratifying part of this whole journey. It seems that HIV treatments have come a long way since it initially appeared on the scene. How difficult was it finding the right regimen and how do you manage it? Yes! It is a VERY optimistic time for those living with HIV. Deciding on a course of treatment is a conversation to be had with your doctor. Everyone responds differently and has different side effects if they have any at all. I also tell people to educate themselves on various treatments. Sites like AIDSMEDS.com are great for information. Doctors
WIRE COVER: JACK MACKENROTH: THE SEXIEST FACE OF HIV are well educated but they are not gods. It’s important to be your own healthcare advocate. I didn’t have a hard time finding a regimen because when I was diagnosed there weren’t any. I’m on great meds that work really well for me now after a bit of trial and error.
HIV+, because there are less side effects with the newer meds and the belief that waiting for someone’s immune system to be suppressed is sort of an old way of thinking, but that’s a decision a person should make with their physician. Adhere to your meds if you are taking them.
What do you feel is the most important way to stay healthy if you are living with HIV and how do you maintain your health?

It’s pretty simple: 1) Find a doctor you trust and be completely honest with him or her about all your behaviors and other meds and possible side effects. 2) Get your blood work done every three to four months and know your CD4 (t-cell) count and get you viral load to an undetectable level. More and more doctors are prescribing meds as soon as they find out a person is

Keeping a secret is stressful and not healthy, plus we will only break down the stigma of HIV by talking about it and normalizing it. There has been a recent spike in the number of people having unprotected sex. Do you think people are no longer worried about contracting HIV? Why do you think so many people avoid getting tested? I think all these questions can be addressed with the same answer. As treatments get better, many people can

have HIV and be healthy and “look” healthy for a long time. Because of this, and because we don’t see the devastation of the epidemic in the news like we did in the 80s and 90s, people have gone back in the closet about their HIV status. This fuels the stigma. This also contributes to the lack of discussion about HIV. People feel judged and less than and dirty. Some people think that it’s not a big deal anymore, which is false, so they are less cautious. And others don’t want to know their status for fear of judgment. Being realistic, what is your advice for people who want to avoid contracting HIV? Abstinence is just not an option for most people... At least not for me! Simple… Assume everyone you are with is HIV positive. Condoms work. How has being positive affected your love life?
WIRE COVER: JACK MACKENROTH: THE SEXIEST FACE OF HIV I guess there are a million reasons not to want to date or have sex with someone. I’m sure I’ve been rejected because of my HIV status. It doesn’t faze me in the least. Do you think it is possible to have a successful positive/negative relationship? How would/ do you make it work? YES! Make sure the HIV+ person has an undetectable viral load and use condoms. I understand that you recently released a calendar to raise funds for amFAR. How did that come about? I had amassed all these amazing images from fabulous photographers, so I just decided I should make a calendar for charity and put my (ass)ets to good use. The calendar begins in January 2012 and continues through May 2013. Each month features a different photogra-
pher with a very different style. Photographers taking part in the project include Adam Bouska (NOH8), Rick Day, Carsten Fleck, Frank Louis, James Franklin, Karl Giant, Tommy Synnamon, Mattheus Lian, Richard Gerst, Ray John Pila, Sonny Tong, Thomas Evans, Krys Fox, and Preston Cros with over 17 amazing images in total. I’m autographing and personalizing every copy and 100% of the proceeds go to The American Foundation for AIDS Research (www.amfar.org) to help find a cure for AIDS. I hope to raise a few thousand dollars for amfAR and so far the response has been amazing. It’s a human disease. I think I’m definitely one of the most visible HIV activists working today. To
show someone healthy and even sexy dispels a lot of misinformation. The stigma of HIV is massive which is why we need to keep talking about it and putting it out there. It’s gonna take more than just a calendar but every little bit helps and one person can make a massive difference. With all of your many pursuits how do you find time to write? What has been the hardest part of writing the book for you? (Laughing) I ask myself the same question. It’s called “Making Lemonaids” and it’s a snarky, sarcastic tell-all about my life. It’s meant to be funny, but it also addresses living with HIV for 22 years and how I used optimism and humor to cope. I really don’t have much time to write. (Laughing) I think the key to my longevity as a reality ‘star’ is that I don’t believe the hype and I don’t take myself seriously as a celebrity. I love what I do and I love that I can affect and help others. I truly, truly appreciate my fans, and though I don’t have time to respond to all my Facebook messages and tweets (@jackmackenroth), I read them all and if someone has a serious question about design or especially HIV I always write back. I take my responsibility as a role model very seriously. I’m glad people find me sexy. We all know sex sells, which is why I still do photo shoots. I work hard at the gym and in the pool so I was honored. As far as I know, I’m the only out HIV+ man in that group, so its great once again to show people that HIV is not a death sentence anymore. What other projects are you working on?

Oh god – so much. I’m doing a movie in January. I have three TV shows in different stages of development – which means nothing until they are on the air. I’ve been doing guest spots on Style’s How Do I Look. I’m promoting my calendar until the end of 2011. I continue to speak all over the country on HIV. Then I finish my book and see where that goes. I do a radio show two times a month called POZIAM and I’m talking to Sirius Radio about doing a once a month LGBT health segment. I’m in talks with two different design houses to come on board as a consultant. I’m training with Team New York Aquatics for a big meet this summer in Reykjavik, Iceland. Is that enough? I’m sure there is more but I can’t even keep up with my life. I need a PR/PA intern if anyone in New York is interested in a couple hours a week. DECEMBER - 8 - 21 The holiday season is upon us and Miami venues will be filled with Christmas music as well as various productions of the holiday classic,
The Nutcracker. Miami venues continue to offer a year-round schedule of music from classic to rock, electronic to jazz. Upcoming concerts include the Arsht Center’s Jazz Roots series, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, concerts from New World Symphony, and Air Supply. Miami’s live music scene is growing rapidly with several new venues opening. For a bit of holiday cheer, The Miami Gay Men’s Chorus will perform their annual holiday concert, Tales from Toyland. For a martini-flavored anecdote to holiday cheer, check out Zoetic Stage’s production of David Sedaris’ play The Santaland Diaries at the Arsht Center. Theater fans can choose from Broadway fare like Shrek, The Musical at the Arsht Center or a local production from companies like GableStage, New Theatre, and Actors’ Playhouse.

WIRED FLIX: THE HEIR APPARENT: LARGO WINCH
There are good movies and there are bad movies – and there are “good bad movies.” “Good bad movies” are films that are so bad they’re good. They’re enjoyable in their wretchedness, deliriously amusing in their lack of logic, their technical and narrative gaucherie. “Good bad movies” have deliciously dumb dialogue, all-too-predictable plot twists, and questionable costume choices. THE HEIR APPARENT: LARGO WINCH is a “good bad movie.” Almost. A little bit Bond and a little bit Bourne, LARGO WINCH is an attempt by a group of European filmmakers to make a contemporary, cosmopolitan action thriller with a newstyle action hero at its center. “You’re a Winch, Largo!” shouts Nerio Winch (Miki Manojlovic), addressing his adopted son, Largo (Tomer Sisley). Not a “wench,” as in a promiscuous and readily available hussy (although with the comely Mr. Sisley in the role, that would have been an interesting direction for the film), but a “Winch,” as in son and heir of Nerio, President, CEO and Grand High Panjandrum of the W Group, one of those sinister, globe-girdling corporations that control everything. The W Group is headquartered in Hong Kong, in a dizzyingly tall skyscraper that has the look of a vaguely menacing sex toy with a helipad on top. It’s within sight of his HQ, on his yacht in the harbor that Nerio Winch meets his end, sparking a global search for Largo. Adopted in infancy from a squalid Eastern European orphanage, Largo is an alienated adventurer. The film catches up with him in a tropical jungle village getting a Tattoo of Invincibility from the local shaman. (The pro-
tective tat will come in handy later.) The inking session is interrupted by the cries of Lea, a young European woman menaced by a group of massive mercenaries. Largo fights off the fatties, hops onto a motorbike and zips away with Lea for an afternoon of torrid sex. But Lea is not the altruistic NGO worker she says she is and soon Largo is drugged and dragged into the local prison hellhole, only to be rescued by Freddy, his father’s scar-faced factotum, who shows up with a bundle of bribe money. But nooooo, Largo won’t have it. “I’ll do it my way,” he barks before shooting, carjacking, and stunting his way out of the prison and down a twisting mountain road. In an SUV with no brakes and a huge fuel truck bearing down on him! Largo and Freddy escape the fuel truck (at the last possible second!) and make their way to Hong Kong. Awaiting them there is Ann Ferguson (Kristin Scott Thomas), Nerio’s number two and, from the looks of things, the winner of the 2010 Anna Wintour Lookalike Contest, Hong Kong and East Asian Division. It is she who will suck Largo into the maelstrom of global corporate intrigue precipitated by his father’s death. LARGO WINCH tries hard but its makers are so clueless, so out of touch with the culture they’re trying to emulate, that the film is laughable when it isn’t tedious. It’s as if someone tried to write a rock anthem in the Bruce Springsteen mode but ended up with a Eurovision Song Contest entry suitable for one of the smaller Baltic countries. The film is gorgeous; its action sequences are sharp, if predictable; and the film’s only surprises are gaffes. that play like staged readings of a CNBC morning show; as Ferguson Kristin Scott Thomas stalks about like a stick insect impersonating Tilda Swinton; at one point Freddy demands that Ferguson send him the W Group’s Top Secret Plan for World Domination – by private courier? CIA-trained bicycle messenger? Stealth-shielded carrier pigeon? No, he just wants her to e-mail it. Which she does. Sure…That would happen. There’s even a bizarre shout-out to the Bond films in the person of Miss Pennywinkle (Like Miss Moneypenny, but with a twist! Get it?). A birdlike woman who works for the W Group, Miss Pennywinkle appears only once, caught sitting on the toilet in the middle of a tense chase scene. But that’s the way LARGO WINCH is. Stuff…Happens. The film should be a camp comedy caper, a fun way to spend a few hours, but it starts to sag under its own weight and by midpoint its hilarious miscues are swamped by repetitive chase scenes, droning exposition, and phony sentimentality. It’s a measure of Tomer Sisley’s charisma that the hunky, rough-hewn star surrenders none of his charm to LARGO WINCH’s inanity. The son of Eastern European and Yemeni parents, Sisley, a comedian and actor, is always watchable -- and a compelling argument for mixing up the gene pool.

WAYS TO STOP WORRYING Worrying is a serious problem for many people. If you have a problem with worry, you may experience some of the following: Feeling nervous about most situations; Feeling restless; Having a difficult time staying focused; Feeling muscle tension; Being irritable or short-tempered; Difficulty sleeping; Symptoms of panic (racing or pounding heart, trembling, sweaty palms, chest pains or heaviness in the chest, light-headedness, and other sensations). If worry has decreased the quality of your life, you may have an anxiety disorder. You might consider hiring an adequately-trained professional, such as a psychologist, to help you understand the problem and recover from it. Depending on your symptoms, you may have one of the following disorders: Generalized Anxiety Disorder, ObsessiveCompulsive Disorder (OCD), Panic Disorder, Agoraphobia, Phobia, Social Phobia, or Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The most common disorder affecting people who worry is Generalized Anxiety Disorder. This disorder fills a person’s life with worry, anxiety, and fear. People who suffer from this disorder are always thinking and dwelling on the “what ifs” of a situation. It may feel to them as if there were no way out of the vicious cycle of anxiety and worry. People may become depressed about life and their inability to stop worrying. People who have generalized anxiety usually do not avoid situations, and they don’t generally have panic attacks. They can become incapacitated by an inability to shut the mind off and are overcome with feelings of worry, dread, lack of energy, and a loss of interest in life. The person usually realizes these feelings are irrational, but the feelings are also very real. The person’s mood can change from hour to hour, or even day to day. Feelings of anxiety and mood swings become a pattern that severely impacts their quality of life. Those with Generalized Anxiety Disorder often show physical symptoms including headaches, irritability, frustration, trembling, inability to concentrate, and sleep disturbance. They may also have symptoms of Social Phobia and Panic Disorder. Fortunately, there are actually many ways to overcome worry. Depending on your specific situation and its causes, you may resolve the problem by trying some of the following suggestions: (1) Change the way you think to eliminate irrational thoughts and lessen worry. A cognitive therapist can help you learn to think differently, and for many people this process reduces or eliminates excessive worrying. (2) Identify where your fear comes from. By journaling or exploring your thoughts and feelings with a psychologist, you can trace the origins of your anxiety and tendency to worry. Knowing why you worry can help you determine what to do about it. (3) Cultivate relationships with others and make use of your support system. Tell people you trust that you are having a problem with worrying and ask them to support you. (4) Explore your feelings on your own by writing regularly in a journal. (5) Learn relaxation techniques to use when you begin to feel anxious. (6) Listen to relaxing, uplifting music to improve your mood and change your focus to more positive things. (7) Do things you enjoy to lighten your mood and to distract yourself. Do the ‘Lincoln Road’ walk, take a jog on the beach, or go to the movies. (8) Look for new interests to get involved in and learn about. This might help you distract yourself from worrying about other things. Consider joining the MiamiDade Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (www.gogaymiami.com) and check out the many interesting organizations and activities you can get involved with. (9) Seek professional treatment. Most people who suffer from anxiety disorders begin to feel better relatively quickly once they receive the proper treatment. Dr. Gregg A.
