A NEW WHITE PARTY, A NEW SUCCESS! Well another White Party Week has come and gone and what a week it was! Every year, I continue to be blown away by the number of gay men and women who flock to our sandy shores to enjoy the incredible music by international DJs, over the top soirees, and bake on the sand – all to raise some much needed funds for the largest HIV/AIDS service organization in South Florida, Care Resource. Like most people, I was a little worried about South Florida’s most famous HIV/AIDS fundraising event since Care Resource announced that the 27-year old soiree would no longer take place at the gorgeous Vizcaya Gardens. For years, the location of White Party has become just as famous as the party itself; however, I received a huge sigh of relief when I spoke with the new director of public relations for Care Resource, Joe DePiero this past week. You may recognize the name from one of our past issues, as Joe still is the director of marketing for one of South Florida’s most famous underwear brands, Papi Underwear. According to Joe, this was certainly a record-breaking year: “The attendance this year was terrific,” explains Joe. “We are still going through all the numbers, but we definitely saw an increase in the amount of people going through the gate
at White Party. I think being at the new location actually helped us in a lot of ways.
As for Muscle Beach itself, it was another record-breaking event for Care Resource.
“The really great thing about the Seaquarium was that it really opened up White Party to a whole new demographic of people, including a group of young people who may not have been able to afford to go to this event in the past. This is very important given the fact that over 50 percent of new HIV infections occur in people below the age of 25.”
“The beach party broke all past records in terms of attendance,” Joe continues. “The reviews of the DJs, sound and lighting system, and party itself that we’ve gotten have been terrific. People were really blown away by DJ Scorpio at the Muscle Beach Party.” Of course, every single night of White Party Week wouldn’t have been complete without stopping by TWIST for a nightcap, which is why there wasn’t a single inch of space available to move at South Beach’s longest running gay bar and club. Their Monday night Swan Song party sent White Party revelers home with a stiff drink in hand and a smile on their face.
Of course many of our seven-day a week local gay bars really benefited from the increase in gay tourism this past week. As the host of the official kick off party, White Heat, MOVA Lounge was packed to capacity last Wednesday with a line going down the block as hundreds of White Party revelers clamored to get their White Party Week started.
When asked what he hoped people walked away with from this year’s White Party Week, Joe responded with, “the knowledge that White Party is more than just an amazing week of events. White Party really does a lot of good for a lot of people. Eighty-six cents of every dollar raised during White Party will go towards providing services to people living with HIV/AIDS, including primary medical care, pediatric care, dental services, the food bank, prevention services, and clinical research that helps the evolution of HIV/AIDS treatments and prevention programs.”
Score’s annual White Journey party was filled with people, moving to the beats of DJs Hector Fonseca and Maximus 3000 last Thursday, while The National Hotel’s gorgeous pool area was teaming with beautiful barely clad men working it out to the beats of DJ Kio Kio on saturday. Palace was slammed all weekend long, especially Sunday night as they hosted the official Muscle Beach Party after party on 12th Street. While DJ Charlie Rojas worked the turntables, thousands of revelers danced under the stars.

When The Manor Complex opened in Wilton Manors, it set a new standard in the Fort Lauderdale club scene. Two years later, as The Manor approaches its two-year anniversary, we had to sit down with gerneral manager Jason Tamanini, so he could share with us how one of the largest gay venues in South Florida has evolved and what is in store for the future. Check out what Jason had to say in our interview for Wire’s readers. What makes The Manor Complex the best club for the LGBT community in Fort Lauderdale? I would like to start by saying that there are many great clubs in Fort Lauderdale, especially in Wilton Manors where The Manor is located. The Manor being colossal in size allows us to have different environments that cater to the different personalities and likes of our diverse GLBT community. What do you consider The Manor’s most significant accomplishment to date? In my opinion I believe it’s winning over the community by showing them that The Manor cares about the community. We have raised and donated well over a quarter of a million dollars in the short two years of our existence. We have also worked with a key group of people who want to make a difference and strive to make the Wilton Manors community the cornerstone of the GLBT people in the State of Florida. What’s something you think a lot of people don’t know about the Manor Complex? I think a lot of people don’t know that The Manor, although a premium looking nightclub by design, service,
and vibe, is very affordable. We have daily happy hour with 2-4-1 specials on all liquor, top shelf included. We have one of the lowest beer prices in the community. We have always been a budget conscious establishment. Some people look or pass by The Manor and think by its premium appearance that it is unaffordable. How are you going to celebrate The Manor’s 2-Year Anniversary? We have a pre-party on Friday with Kidd Madonny. DJ Manny Lehman will be hitting the wheels of steel for our 2-Year Anniversary Party on Saturday, December 10. We will also have a live band in the Windsor Bar, and the Noche Latina rooms will be in theme. In addition, we have a few surprises in store with special reveals happening throughout the evening. I will personally celebrate at the end of the evening with my staff, when we all know we have presented an opening night quality event with superlative service. Any inside scoop on upcoming events Wire Magazine readers should know about? Well... There are several huge events planned, but I’ll give you a sneak peak. The outrageous Super Model of the World, recording artist, actor, and reality TV host RUPAUL will be in concert at The Manor in January. Are there plans for anything to change at the Manor Complex in the future? Well, for our anniversary we have added an abundance of new lighting and have spruced up our already fabulous décor. We’ve also added new design elements to a few of our lounges. What is The Manor planning for New Year’s Eve? New Year’s Eve will be an all out spectacle, featuring a tribute to the splendors of Asia. In the nightclub we will have a lot of Asian inspired entertainment, spectacular decor, live Time Square simulcast, an 8,000 balloon drop at midnight, music will be by producer/DJ David Knapp. If you’re making VIP bottle reservations, I would encourage you to do so ASAP, because last year we sold out before the event. Rembrandt: Erotic Secrets 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. World Erotic Art Museum 1205 Washington Ave. | Miami Beach In an extraordinary exhibit that will showcase what historians, curators, and collectors have for centuries declared the iconic Dutch artist’s “dirty little secrets,” twenty etchings by Rembrandt van Rijn (1609-69) will be unveiled all together for the first time throughout Art Basel at Naomi Wilzig’s World Erotic Art Museum. As well as being a painter and draftsman, Rembrandt was an exceptionally productive and innovative etcher. Making over three hundred etchings during his long career, the studies of his own face, of beggars and everyday scenes played a crucial role in his etchings of scenes from daily life, portraits and well-known scenes from the Old and New Testaments. Rembrandt’s nudes were guided by a principle of working only “from life”. Breaking convention of his time his honesty of the human form led to these works being hidden for centuries, that is until now. The reception and exhibit are free and open to the public with the exhibition running through December 5 during Art Basel. The LGBT Visitor Center is located at 1130 Washington Avenue, First Floor, Miami Beach. “We encourage the community to come out and support our local LGBT artists at this amazing exhibition and closing reception,” said Steve Adkins, chairman of the board of the MDGLCC Foundation, Inc. “There is an incredible amount of artistic talent in our LGBT community and by spotlighting community artists during world-class events like Art Basel, we hope to showcase this talent in front of a global audience of arts patrons and tastemakers.”

WIRE FEATURE: WE’VE COME A LONG WAY THIS WORLD AIDS DAY Why is World AIDS Day important? World AIDS Day is important because on this day we celebrate those who are living with HIV/ AIDS, those who have lost their battle to this virus, and those who have committed their lives to providing care and management of HIV- infected individuals. How have the treatments for people living with HIV evolved since the first reported case in 1981?
Since HIV/AIDS blindsided the gay community in 1981, it has been a constant battle to increase awareness about the disease, reduce the rate of infection among men who have sex with men, and treat people living with HIV effectively. As we all come together this Thursday, December 1st to commemorate World AIDS Day, it is important to remember that HIV/AIDS is still a very active epidemic – even more than 30 years later. Although very treatable, it is still very preventable; however, in Miami we have seen an increased number of HIV infections in men who have sex with men. Here are the facts: 1 in every 8 white men, 1 in every 8 black men, and 1 in every 12 Hispanic men who have sex with men in Miami-Dade are living with HIV/AIDS. That’s A LOT of people! This is why I thought it would be great to highlight a couple of people who are doing some pretty amazing things for the HIV community, while working at your local Walgreens Pharmacy. Sami Shafiq and Jason Willman are both a part of Walgreen’s HIV Specialty Program, which means they spend most of their time making sure people living with HIV get the most effective treatments that won’t break their bank. They actually go above and beyond to work with people living with HIV to get pharmaceutical discounts that allow people without insurance to receive proper care. On this World AIDS Day, we would like to celebrate all that they do and thousands of people they “positively” affect on a daily basis. AZT (ZDV: Retrovir or zidovudine) was the first drug approved by the FDA in 1987 for the treatment of HIV infection. Over the past three decades, the treatment and management of HIV infection has evolved significantly. With the advent of Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART), we are able to achieve a maximal and a durable viral suppression and reconstiture patients’ immune system. We have been able to keep our patients out of the hospital by reducing the morbidity and mortality and improving the quality of life. In addition to the potency, we have seen a significant improvement in short-term and long-term toxicity profile of these medications. However, even in the face of the significant improvement in treatment, the challenges of adherence, drug interactions, and resistance still exist. Walgreens has taken a lead in training their pharmacists to address these issues. I understand that Walgreens has a special division that specifically works with people living with HIV. When did this program begin and why was it important to create this individual department? Walgreens appreciated the special needs involved in the management of HIV-infected people. In August 2007, Walgreens launched an HIV Specialty Program, which designated a dedicated pharmacist with clinical expertise in HIV/AIDS. This pharmacist serves as a Clinical Liaison between the patient, physician, and the pharmacist to address the challenges faced in HIV treatment. The goal of this program is to reduce medication errors, improve therapy, improve adherence, and prevent virologic resistance. What is it that you guys actually do? Walgreens has 35 Centers of Excellence in HIV in Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach Counties. Each member of the staff, including the pharmacy technicians and pharmacists, are trained in HIV treatment, stigma, and cultural competency. HIV-infected patients’ therapy is monitored to make sure it’s complete and correct. Pa-

tient’s medication profile is monitored for drug-drug interactions, duplication of therapy and adherence. Patients are contacted pro-actively to receive refill reminders. Patients are also offered free home delivery and free multivitamins. Most importantly, patients are treated by a professionally trained staff in the management of HIV therapy. What services do you offer to people living with HIV? As an HIV expert pharmacist, I offer education to the community, including HIV-infected patients, case managers, nurses, pharmacists, and physicians. I am involved in several out-reach events ranging from health fairs and patient support groups in several AIDS Service Organizations. As a company, we assist patients with complex billing (e.g. Share of Cost), prior authorizations, and patient assistance programs. In addition, we offer manufacturers sponsored copayment card programs to provide financial assistance to our patients. Patients are offered one-on-one adherence counseling by an HIV Specialty Pharmacist. During the adherence counseling sessions, patients are educated on the medication schedule, food restrictions, importance of adherence, and the consequences of non-adherence and virologic resistance. Goals of therapy are also explained to the patients and the importance of following up with the doctor’s and lab appointments. What advice would you give to someone living with HIV? I would advise them to be sure to seek medical advice from a physician who is an expert in HIV. Once in care, they need to take medications as directed by the provider, follow-up with doctors’ appointments, and routinely follow-up on lab appointments. Have safe sex in order to protect yourself from re-infection and to protect your loved ones. I will encourage healthy living, including smoking cessation, safe sex, healthy diet, enough rest, reduce stress, and exercise. Where do you hope to see the treatment of HIV in the next decade? I hope to see more research dollars spent on HIV therapeutic vaccination to provide our patients a, “functional cure”, which would enable them to take a break from these long-term medications and slow the progression of the HIV disease. So it’s only fitting that her new album, ‘Talk That Talk’, celebrates the journey of this amazing diva while challenging her opponents to do just that. When we last heard from the Barbadian bombshell on ‘Loud’, she was just barely getting over the emotional aftermath of her dysfunctional duet with Chris Brown. Although not as somber as its predecessor

‘Rated R’, we could tell she was still a bit on the defensive. This time around, not only has RiRi finally let her guard down, she’s completely stripped herself of all her emotional armor and delivered a collection of tracks set to prove that you don’t have to be a bitch to be the best. From the first note off the albums lead single, ‘We Found Love’, you could tell a new Rihanna was ready to burst from her dark cocoon. The pairing of her unmistakable voice with legendary songwriter/producer Calvin Harris’ magic beats proved to be a marriage made in clubland. The track is only outdone by Harris’ other contribution ‘Where Have You Been’, which is already causing some havoc on the dance floor and
RIHANNA REWIND Ever since we got our first taste of Rihanna’s smokin’ beats, we’ve been hooked like a crack whore on the only pipe (in the world). If your memory is still a bit hazy from last week’s White Party debauchery, here’s a little recap of why the Barbadian beauty is so damn addictive: MUSIC OF THE SUN (2005) A new diva arrives! At a time when hip-hop ruled the charts, Rihanna made up her own rules with her Caribbean-inspired debut single ‘Pon de Replay’. The track peaked at #2, making waves throughout the pop genre and leaving the competition in her wake. A GIRL LIKE ME (2006) Proving she’s no one-hit-wonder, Rihanna returned with her first #1 hit, ‘S.O.S.’ Between the highly contagious chorus and the ‘Tainted Love’ sample that has survived three decades of heartache, we were helpless to raise our hands and surrender. GOOD GIRL GONE BAD (2007) GOOD GIRL GONE BAD: RELOADED (2008) Determined not to be labeled a “singles” artist, Rihanna decided to play dirty and deliver one of the best albums of the year. Album 3 (and 3.5) gave us a grittier side of Rihanna we were dying to hear. The edgy riff on ‘Shut Up and Drive’, the angst of ‘Breakin’ Dishes’, and infectious hook of ‘Disturbia’ had just the right amount of

With such an eclectic mix of styles, ‘Talk That Talk’ still manages to keep a cohesive flow from start to finish, making it Rihanna’s best album so far and most likely a definite contender for “Album of the Year”.

RATED R (2009) Recently recovered from the beat-down heard around the word, RiRi fought back the way any self-respecting recording artist would—in the studio. Although not her most cheerful collection, it’s definitely the most honest. Armed with an arsenal of top notch producers, Rihanna pulled no punches and made no excuses. In true gay fashion we still managed to pull some sweet remixes out of the dark debris of tracks like ‘Hard’, ‘Rude Boy’ and of course the album’s crown jewel ‘Russian Roulette’. LOUD (2010) It took less than a year for RiRi to ditch her bitter bitch heels and throw on her happy pumps. With pop music turning to house for a re-up, Rihanna knew it was the perfect time for a little reinvention of her own. Her first single, ‘Only Girl (In The World)’ quickly hit heavy rotation in the clubs and became the #1 song in the country, finally shaking off those Chris Brown blues that almost took her down. Her two other #1’s, ‘S&M’ and ‘What’s My Name’, also reminded us that even when she’s having fun, the bitch don’t play!
