Part 2 of 3: Diversity of Nightlife One of the best things about living in South Florida is that there seems to be an endless supply of things to do. The real challenge is picking and choosing the right place, party, and event to get the best return on your investment, i.e. PARTY YOUR ASS OFF!
In last week’s issue, I dedicated my column to hot, hip, and crazy parties, venues, and events that take place in South Beach and promised that I would provide the skinny on the diversity of soirees taking place off the beach and around Downtown Miami and in Fort Lauderdale! As for Downtown Miami, I have to give some major props to Miami’s newest and only gay stripper club, Johnny’s Miami. After opening their doors a few months ago, owner Sean David has worked hard to create individual nights that appeal to a variety of people. On Monday nights, it is all about the drag community and the fabulous bartenders, waiters, and service industry people, who work tirelessly to make sure we have a great time! During DRAG-on Mondays, drag queens drink for free till midnight, followed by $3 drinks all night long. Of course, the performances by TP Lords and Daisy D definitely make this a super spectacular night. On Tuesdays, Johnny’s goes hip hop, as they continually partner with some of the biggest names in hip hop to host their official CD release parties. In fact, they will be hosting a release
party for Drake’s latest track this Tuesday night with tons of giveaways. Thursdays nights are certainly my favorite, as it is all about the hot Latin papis all night long. With shows by Teresita la Caliente and Marytrini, you are pretty much guaranteed a fabulous night of non-stop laughter – just make sure you speak Spanish or have a good translator!
The Manor is one of the few gay places in South Florida where you can literally kick off your afternoon during happy hour in their comfortable outside seating area until you’re ready to grab a bite at The Manor’s fantastic restaurant, which offers a variety of dining options ranging from light tapas to heavier meals like steak and roasted chicken. And if you have a bit of a sweet tooth and are in the mood for a coffee, The Manor’s café always showcases some delectable sweet tidbits.
Frat boys unite on Friday nights at Johnny’s during their weekly College Fridays party. Hot, young, and cost conscience college guys fill the place, enjoying $4 drinks and fab beats by DJ Miik. Each Saturday night is dedicated to a special theme or party, and this Saturday night the fierce Amanda Lapore will be the hostess with the mostess.
Later in the night, The Manor also spices up Fort Lauderdale’s nightlife with an assortment of weekly parties and events. Thursday nights get dramatic with their Bittersweet Thursday night party, which features burlesque shows all night long. Think of the young and gorgeous on Friday nights at The Manor during their weekly Bubblegum Fridays, and Saturday nights are all about dancing your ass off, as The Manor brings in world renowned DJs to work the turntables and keep the vibe hot and heavy all night long!
Not too far down the road at Discotekka on Saturday nights, there’s a whole complex of entertainment. From the front of the building with the outside patio, which offers drink specials all night long, to the main room, where you can always hear some of the hottest house beats from some of the biggest names in the biz, they seem to have it all. And if house is not your style, you can always hit up the Forbidden Room, where DJ Sky works the turntables, spinning the hottest hip hop beats all night. And let’s not forget their amazing theme parties!
So as you can see, we not only have tons of great things to do in Miami Beach, we’ve got some really great happenings all over South Florida.
Now let’s move on up to one of my favorite gayborhoods, Wilton Manors. Among the many bars on Wilton Drive, including Matti’s, Georgie’s Alibi, Rosie’s, Bill’s Filling Station, and New Moon Bar, there is only one location that offers the most diversity in entertainment – The Manor.
As promised, I will dedicate next week’s column to the many weekly and monthly parties and events, organized by South Florida’s hottest promoters! Till then!

Edison Farrow HYPEs up Friday Nights @ MOVA When MOVA first opened its doors, there was certainly a buzz among local gay hipsters and fashionistas, as Miami Beach would finally have its very own gay martini lounge. Yes, Miami Beach is home to some incredible bars and clubs, but MOVA was the first bar to really focus on perfecting the art of the martini. As a result, MOVA was one of the first gay venues to host, not just one, but three of Edison Farrow’s famous Martini Tuesdays. Over the years, MOVA has evolved and so has its repertoire of weekly events. Events like College Night Wednesdays and Out-n-Ugly Sundays hosted by the Penny Back Boyz and Sookie Stacks have become a staple on the Miami Beach scene and now Edison Farrow will be bringing his famous HYPE Fridays party back and re-launching it at MOVA this Friday night, and needless to say there is a lot of HYPE! Along with the all the “HYPE” – pun certainly intended – you will get the same fabulous event but remixed in a way that is sure to titillate your senses. Original HYPE resident DJ Bryan Zero will be working the turntables, while the infamous Pussila will keep the room moving with her over-the-top antics! I recently caught up with Edison to get the scoop on all the HYPE for this Friday night. Check it out! You worked with MOVA when it first opened in South Beach as Halo. How has MOVA evolved since then? Yes, I had several events at MOVA when it first opened and many Martini Tuesdays were held there. I love the remodel that they did. The venue has a great flow, people love the fact that the location is just off Lincoln Road, and they appreciate that there is no smoking inside. Why do you think MOVA has continued to be such a success in Miami Beach? It is the most sleek, beautiful lounge. It reminds me of some of the upscale lounges in New York. These days in most cities, the smaller venues are more popular and huge, huge nightclubs have closed.
How did you come up with the concept? When I was creating the ad for it, I was thinking about what the HYPE would be and just decided to call it HYPE. So, for the image I wanted a HYPE’d photo, but the concept for the party was all about having fun with no attitude! Why did you decide to put HYPE on hiatus? I started Hype Fridays and it ran for a year and a half. I stopped the night when I decided to take a break to spend some time in New York City this past summer. Now, I am launching events again. What made you decide to return to MOVA and re-launch HYPE there? MOVA seems like the right fit for the party. I am excited to be back at MOVA. I had several Martini Tuesdays there when they first opened and they were always successful there. You’ve also brought back the original HYPE DJ, DJ Bryan Zero. Why did you feel it was important to bring him back in? DJ Bryan Zero always plays fun music which gets the people going on a Friday night. I knew that he would be able to keep the crowd happy and having a good time. You can expect hit songs and favorites that have been re-mixed. I know that Bryan can play what people want to hear. Why do you think HYPE will be more successful at MOVA than at the previous venue? People have been asking me to organize another Friday night since I took the break in June, so I decided to team up with MOVA for Fridays. MOVA is a beautiful venue and convenient for everyone to get to. They also have $6 Finlandia vodka drinks all night and $8 Stoli vodka drinks all night. Their bottle prices are also very affordable. HYPE Fridays at MOVA will be the perfect place to kick off your birthday weekend

How is Buzios different from Rio? A beautiful seaside destination, Buzio is much more tame than Rio. It is the perfect destination to wind down from the parties and rejuvenate before heading back home. There are still terrific nightlife spots, for those that want to continue having fun, but in Buzios, I find it best to simply enjoy the Brazilian summer with water sports, island hopping, and fantastic cuisine.

Pam Ann’s Hysterical App Guides to London, Sydney, and New York I don’t know about you but when I travel abroad, I find myself spending a countless amount of hours perusing the Internet, trying to find the newest, hottest, and hippest places in each city to explore. If that were not enough, I tend to drop a few bucks on the basic travel guides; however, I have discovered that no matter how much time I spend on the Internet or how many guide books I purchase, I never truly get the real lowdown on each city – or at least the “gay down”!

The Script Hits South Beach for the First Time Since last year’s breakout smash, “Breakeven”, The Script has skyrocketed up the charts with hit after hit off of their #1 selftitled debut album. They’ve spent the last two years touring the world while simultaneously promoting their new album, “Science and Faith”. Written and produced by hottie frontman Danny O’Donoghue and guitarist Mark Sheehan, “Science & Faith” also debuted at #1 in Ireland and the UK and at #3 here in the U.S. Much like their debut, their follow-up album is packed with emotionallydriven tracks, haunting hooks, unforgettable melodies, and, of course, Danny’s sexy and soulful vocals. Their current hit “For the First Time” has been out less than a month and is already in heavy rotation on top 40 radio, VH1, and MTV.

In the midst of their whirlwind tour schedule the guys still took the time to share some insights about the show with me and what they have in store for us here in South Beach.
I absolutely love the single “Nothing” (maybe because I’ve been there). What’s your funniest drunk dialing experience? More than likely Danny, when he realized he’d actually texted Mark instead of his girlfriend!

Welcome to South Beach! How has the tour been so far? Amazing, the reactions from the audiences every night has been astounding and the amount of people waiting outside to meet us after the shows has blown us away. Have you had to make any adjustments to the show compared to the European leg? Only small adjustments production wise, otherwise it’s the same show. What can we expect from your first concert in South Beach? Raw energy and a high pumped live show from start to finish. You guys all share song writing credit on your work. What do you do when there’s a disagreement on how something should be written? We generally know when something is working or not. There is always a communal agreement. Things just stand out when they’re in the right place. “Breakeven” was your third single in Europe in 2008 and did extremely well over there. It was your first single in the U.S. two years later and still hit Platinum. What do you think it is about that song that makes it so timeless? I think it’s the universal theme in the song. Everyone has been or is going through
Have you started writing the third album yet? We have some ideas but haven’t had time to actually get into the studio yet. What advice would you give to any bands out there trying to make a name for themselves? Use all the media tools at your disposal. The Internet is so important and the first place people will look for you. Try to build a fan base by gigs, gigs, and more gigs. You can never gig enough! Gain experience and always sharpen your sound. Rehearse as much as you can. The Irish are notorious for drinking (not that that’s a bad thing). Will we be catching you guys at any of South Beach’s popular hot spots while you’re here? Absolutely, all of them!

This weekend’s theme at Miami-area indie cinemas is “Good Movies with Short Runs.” In the time it takes to blink, three don’t-miss movies will be here and gone. THE MYSTERIES OF LISBON runs just over four and a half hours, which most moviegoers would see as a challenge, but think of Chilean filmmaker Raul Ruiz’ endlessly intriguing, richly textured film as a nine-hour telenovela condensed into four hours plus (which it is) and it’s less intimidating. In nineteenth century Portugal, João, a bastard child of noble blood, finds shelter with Father Dinis, a humble parish priest. João’s quest to discover his parentage – to find out who he is – is abetted by the wise Padre. But is Father Dinis a humble parish priest? And what of the entrepreneur who has made a fortune in Brazil? Who is he really? And the Countess? As the film unfolds, identities dissolve and re-form, the narrative deepens and becomes more engrossing. THE MYSTERIES OF LISBON isn’t a roller coaster ride – it’s a deceptively leisurely seduction, slowly encircling you with thorny but irresistible tendrils. You can’t look away. Similarly engrossing is SHUT UP LITTLE MAN! AN AUDIO MISADVENTURE, a documentary that captures a quirky and unnerving story from pre-Internet America about Eddie and Mitch, two young guys from the Midwest, headed to San Francisco in search of a scene in 1987. They landed in a dumpy apartment with noisy neighbors – Peter Haskett and Raymond Huffman, alcoholic roommates whose booze-soaked, obscenityladen, violently abusive arguments (usually punctuated by Peter’s screeching putdown, “Shut up little man!”) terrified the new arrivals. Unable to stop the nightly fights, Eddie and Mitch decided to record Peter and Ray on their stereo’s cassette deck and soon were caught up in Peter and Ray’s drama, obsessively taping and listening and copying tapes for their friends. In time Eddie and Mitch’s cassettes became a hot item for a network of underground audiophiles and in the ironysoaked early 1990s, when people still published ‘zines, Peter and Ray became subculture celebrities. The tapes became the basis for a play, of short films and many, many comic books. Peter and Ray had, as the kids say today, “gone viral,” pre-Internet style.

Even Hollywood got interested. Suddenly the tapes were a “property” – and all bets were off. Three feature film projects based on the tapes bloomed, only to die. In the end only a cottage industry of CDs and other Peter and Ray oddments remained. (Both men died in the mid1990s – copies of their death certificates are available for a couple bucks.) Matthew Bate’s documentary captures the strange allure of the tapes. Their boozy illogic and howling ferocity is undeniably funny and says something about the dynamic of some relationships. Bate also demonstrates that the cultural and commercial phenomenon are based on a massive invasion of privacy. This moral ambiguity gives the film its edge. It’s left to Tony Newton, Ray and Peter’s sometime roommate, to assert a bit of human dignity. Cornered in his SRO residence by Mitch and a cameraman, he refuses the offer of one hundred dollars and a six pack in exchange for an interview, shouting “I’m not selling my life for a hundred dollars!” In the world evoked by SHUT UP LITTLE MAN, that’s standing tall. 3, the new film from German director Tom (RUN, LOLA, RUN) Tykwer, evokes another world entirely: Berlin, the present day, as its elite sees it. It’s lovely, but that doesn’t stop longtime companions Hanna and Simon from feeling miserable. Hanna (Sophie Rois), who covers the arts on TV, is bored, emotionally unfulfilled, and restless Ditto Simon (Sebastian Schipper), who also has to deal with a death in his family and a cancer diagnosis. The pair drift drearily through life until each encounters Adam (Devid Striesow), a big, blonde geneticist, and finds new happiness and fulfillment in his arms. 3 isn’t about a ménage a trois – it’s about the lead-up to one, and one gets the feeling that the real drama is just about to unfold just as the movie ends. Tykwer is contemplating an ideal – wouldn’t we all be better off if we just dropped the categories and stereotypes and barriers that imprison us? The thorny issues that might arise between three actual people in a relationship aren’t the concern of this movie. But then 3 does have intriguing characters, interacting surprisingly in an exciting setting, caught by a canny filmmaker. It’s a trio that’s hard to argue with.
