Several Pride celebrations are also taking place around the country as more and more people get vaccinated and life is starting to return back to normal. On June 1, 2021 The White House under President Joe Bidden issued a Proclamation that states “The LGBTQ+ community in America has achieved remarkable progress since Stonewall. Historic Supreme Court rulings in recent years have struck down regressive laws, affirmed the right to marriage equality, and secured workplace protections for LGBTQ+ individuals in every State and Territory. The Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act broadened the definition of hate crimes to include crimes motivated by sexual orientation or gender identity. Members of the LGBTQ+ community now serve in nearly every level of public office – in city halls and State capitals, Governors’ mansions and the halls of the Congress, and throughout my Administration. Nearly 14 percent of my 1,500 agency appointees identify as LGBTQ+, and I am particularly honored by the service of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, the first openly LGBTQ+ person to serve in the Cabinet, and Assistant Health Secretary Dr. Rachel Levine, the first openly transgender person to be confirmed by the Senate.” The Adrienne Arsht Center is also celebrating with their Pride Marketplace free outdoor event on June 26 to kick off the return of their CommuniTea Dance, the Center’s annual LGBTQ+ Pride Month celebration. Our entire community is invited to the Thomson Plaza for the Arts 3-7 p.m., and to this year’s CommuniTea Dance featuring an evening of performances by South Florida-based LGBTQ+ artists on the Center’s Ziff Ballet Opera House stage, starting at 6:30 p.m. TWIST is celebrating its 28th Anniversary on Wednesday, June 30, beginning at 9 p.m. I sat down with owner Joel Stedman to chat about what it means to celebrate 28 years in business as a safe gathering place for the LGBTQ community, and how it feels to do so coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic. This week, we also feature striking Canadian model Malik Delgaty on the cover, and a Dining Delicious editorial about OLA Miami and their cuisine combining Pan Latin, Spanish and Caribbean flavors. Your immune system may get stronger and begin to fight infections that may have been hidden in your body. Tell your healthcare provider if you have any new symptoms after you start taking BIKTARVY. Kidney problems, including kidney failure. Your healthcare provider should do blood and urine tests to check your kidneys. If you develop new or worse kidney problems, they may tell you to stop taking BIKTARVY. Too much lactic acid in your blood (lactic acidosis), which is a serious but rare medical emergency that can lead to death. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you get these symptoms: weakness or being more tired than usual, unusual muscle pain, being short of breath or fast breathing, stomach pain with nausea and vomiting, cold or blue hands and feet, feel dizzy or lightheaded, or a fast or abnormal heartbeat. Severe liver problems, which in rare cases can lead to death. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you get these symptoms: skin or the white part of your eyes turns yellow, dark “tea-colored” urine, light-colored stools, loss of appetite for several days or longer, nausea, or stomach-area pain. The most common side effects of BIKTARVY in clinical studies were diarrhea (6%), nausea (6%), and headache (5%).
Worsening of hepatitis B (HBV) infection. Your healthcare provider will test you for HBV. If you have both HIV-1 and HBV, your HBV may suddenly get worse if you stop taking BIKTARVY. Do not stop taking BIKTARVY without first talking to your healthcare provider, as they will need to check your health regularly for several months, and may give you HBV medicine.
ABOUT BIKTARVY BIKTARVY is a complete, 1-pill, once-a-day prescription medicine used to treat HIV-1 in adults and children who weigh at least 55 pounds. It can either be used in people who have never taken HIV-1 medicines before, or people who are replacing their current HIV-1 medicines and whose healthcare provider determines they meet certain requirements. BIKTARVY does not cure HIV-1 or AIDS. HIV-1 is the virus that causes AIDS. Do NOT take BIKTARVY if you also take a medicine that contains: dofetilide rifampin any other medicines to treat HIV-1
BEFORE TAKING BIKTARVY Tell your healthcare provider if you: Have or have had any kidney or liver problems, including hepatitis infection. Have any other health problems. Are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is not known if BIKTARVY can harm your unborn baby. Tell your healthcare provider if you become pregnant while taking BIKTARVY. Are breastfeeding (nursing) or plan to breastfeed. Do not breastfeed. HIV-1 can be passed to the baby in breast milk. Tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines you take: Keep a list that includes all prescription and over-thecounter medicines, antacids, laxatives, vitamins, and herbal supplements, and show it to your healthcare provider and pharmacist. BIKTARVY and other medicines may affect each other. Ask your healthcare provider and pharmacist about medicines that interact with BIKTARVY, and ask if it is safe to take BIKTARVY with all your other medicines.
These are not all the possible side effects of BIKTARVY. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you have any new symptoms while taking BIKTARVY. RC: What drives you? MD: I was really poor and I don’t want to be poor again, so money and my family. I want to be happy. RC: Who is the person that inspires you the most? Why? MD: My uncle, because he had cancer and he never gave up.

For close to three decades, TWIST has been the place where our LGBTQ community has gathered to have fun, enjoy stiff cocktails, dance to the music of talented DJs and watch great performances by countless drag performers and entertainers in South Beach. TWIST will be celebrating its 28th anniversary on Wednesday, June 30, beginning at 9 p.m., so I sat down with owner Joel Stedman to chat about celebrating this milestone and how it feels to do so coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic. Rafa Carvajal: What does being open and celebrating a new TWIST anniversary mean to you as we come out of the COVID-19 pandemic? Joel Stedman: Well, it has been one incredible year that is for sure. For a while, we thought we were never going to open again, and now fully open to 5 a.m. every night. The response has been nothing short of incredible. I am so thankful to our loyal guests for coming back so strongly, and to our talented staff that stuck with us through some very tough times and continue to be amazing.
RC: Tell our readers what you and TWIST did to help the TWIST staff during the pandemic? JS: We kept everyone on payroll a few weeks after the closing and senior staff were kept on the duration. Many difficult choices had to be made, but, most importantly, we had to make sure there was a business left to come back to when closures were lifted. It was a heart wrenching time I hope we never have to revisit. RC: Any major plans for TWIST coming out of the pandemic and for the rest of the year? JS: We have been busy the last few weeks installing new carpeting, furnishings, and all new lights and sound. It definitely looks to be an exciting year ahead. TWIST will have yet another new look for the coming year.

RC: When is TWIST celebrating this anniversary? JS: This year, we are celebrating 28 years, Wednesday, June 30, beginning at 9 p.m. RC: What are the plans for this year’s anniversary? JS: This is a big one, because there is so much to celebrate. Being fully open is just huge, coming out of our most challenging year ever, stronger than ever and doing all this for 28 years. I think it is definitely time to celebrate! We will have complimentary cocktails and hot hors d’oeuvres by Gourmet Station 9-11 p.m. The infamous TP Lords and always outrageous Josefina La Globos will be performing with DJ Sushiman on the decks. RC: What was it like for you as the business owner of TWIST during the pandemic? JS: Challenging would be an understatement. We adjusted quickly to our new reality and went to work. We remodeled, cleaned and persevered by simply keeping busy.

RC: How does it feel to celebrate an anniversary after all the challenges TWIST and Miami Beach have faced during the COVID-19 pandemic? JS: Exuberance and gratefulness. Ready to celebrate, not dwell on the past. The future is ours, there are so many, many good times ahead. RC: What would you like to say to TWIST’s loyal patrons who have continued to support you over so many years? JS: Thank you! You are the reason we are still here. We are so incredibly lucky to have all of you in our TWIST family. Let’s celebrate!

OLA MIAMI I recently enjoyed a Sunday dinner and cocktails at OLA Miami in The Gates Hotel South Beach. OLA is short for “Of Latin American.” You can experience OLA’s Latin cuisine sitting in its dining room, or at its patio with waterfront dining overlooking Lake Pancoast on Collins Avenue. OLA o f f e r s d i n e r s a m o d e r n , l o c a l l yinspired seasonal dinner menu which features a combination of Pan Latin, Spanish and Caribbean flavors in its starters, main courses, desserts and craft cocktails. Our dinner started with a tasting of three of OLA’s signature ceviches: Lobster Ceviche with yellow tomatocitrus sauce, Limo pepper, cilantro, red onion and heirloom tomato-Tabasco sorbet; Hamachi Nikkei Ceviche with yuzu, Thai basil, togarashi, cilantro, sweet soy glaze, crushed seaweed and sesame seeds; and Royal Trumpet Ceviche with royal trumpet mushrooms marinated in a lime soy sauce, ginger, jalapeños, cilantro, red onion and micro celery. I accompanied them with a very refreshing Watermelon Mojito crafted with Don Q Rum, lime, mint and watermelon.

We also sampled three other flavorful appetizers: OLA Meatballs made with Kobe beef, foie-gras sherry sauce, black trumpet chimi and crispy shallots; Chicharron with crispy rock shrimp tossed in sweet and spicy panca sauce with micro cilantro; and Corn Empanada, a vegetarian empanada served with mushroom salad, huitlacoche and sweet corn sauce.
For our entrées, we chose the Panela Salmon, a delicious panela whole cane sugar cured seared salmon with red quinoa, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, huancaina sauce and radish salad; and Filet Mignon Churrasco style cut with grilled asparagus, chipotle crabmeat dressing and chimichurri. I also enjoyed another delectable cocktail, the Passion Kamikaze with vodka, triple sec, lime, sugar, passion fruit and mango. We then satisfied our sweet tooth with Da Bomb semi-sweet chocolate mousse with toasted hazelnuts finished with caramel and chocolate sauce; Deconstructed Key Lime Pie with Key lime custard, toasted meringue, vanilla bean ice cream, finished with a toasted tuile; and a glass of Dizsnoko Tokaji “5 Puttonys” dessert wine from Hungary.
