Just over an hour across the Crown Range from Queenstown, Wānaka is one of New Zealand’s most picturesque and beautiful lakeside towns. Surrounded by the majesty of the snowcapped Southern Alps, the township sits on the tranquil shores of Lake Wānaka, with another glacial lake, Lake Hāwea, just to the northeast. Sky Lights Wānaka is one of New Zealand’s few locations for viewing Aurora Australis, or the Southern Lights. These exquisite sky-wide light shows are caused by electrically charged particles from solar winds entering the Earth’s atmosphere and reacting with its gasses. Sometimes called “space weather,” the Southern Lights are considered a once-in-a-lifetime experience (unless you live in Wānaka, where you have every chance to see them more than once). With naturally clear skies and a spectacular, mountainous landscape as a backdrop, Wānaka is a superb location to view this rare phenomenon. If photography is one of your passions, Wānaka offers unique opportunities, with its dark night sky normally filled with the Milky Way and billions of stars.

Go with the Flow Only a few hundred metres from Northbrook Wānaka are the shores of Lake Wānaka, internationally renowned for its beauty. Framed by the Southern Alps, the surface of the lake’s green glacial waters creates an enormous mirror of the snowy mountains and open sky, reflecting the kind of peaceful, natural perfection usually only found on postcards. At night, low light pollution means the canopy is filled with millions of stars. The lake offers activities such as fly fishing for salmon, and brown and rainbow trout, boating, or even swimming for those brave souls who enjoy the lifeaffirming properties of cold fresh water. Also within easy walking distance of Northbrook Wānaka is the mouth of the Clutha River, the South Island’s longest river, which runs from Lake Wānaka all the way to the Pacific Ocean, 75km south-west of Dunedin. Once famous for gold, 187 dredges worked the Clutha at the industry’s peak in the 1800s. The banks of the Clutha offer a wide variety of bike rides or walks, from the Upper Clutha Track, an especially scenic and sheltered riverbank route that finishes 21km away in Albert Town, to many smaller and easier treks. Just minutes from Northbrook Wānaka, the bubbling, singing waters of the Clutha are magical for picnicking next to, or for simply sitting in quiet contemplation and connecting with nature.

Keep on Trekking Wānaka offers more than 750km of walking and hiking tracks, from gentle lakeside strolls to more challenging day trips and multi-day hikes. Northbrook Wānaka is in close proximity to most of these or only a short car ride away. For an easy start, try the 3km Outlet Track that follows the Clutha River from Wānaka to Albert Town along a stretch of water known internationally for its trout fishing. Or feel like you’ve entered another world on the 1.5km Blue Pools Track near Makarora, as you wind through silver beech forest and swing bridges to the crystal-clear, deep cobalt waters. For something a little more challenging, try the very local Mount Iron, a 4.5km trek to a 240m-high, glacier-carved rocky knoll. The summit unfolds with 360-degree views, taking in Lakes Wānaka and Hāwea, as well as the Cardrona and Upper Clutha Valleys, and all the surrounding peaks, including many in Mount Aspiring National Park. You can also test yourself on the world-famous 16km Roy’s Peak Track, moving through open tussock and grassland to the summit, where you’ll be rewarded with all-encompassing views of Lake Wānaka and its surrounds. At Northbrook Wānaka, this extraordinary countryside is your own backyard, with some of New Zealand’s most stunning mountain scenery wherever you look.
Aspire to Freedom Wānaka is the gateway to Mount Aspiring National Park, an incredible “Lord of the Rings” tableau of mountains, glaciers, rivers, valleys, and alpine lakes, straddling the Main Divide of the Southern Alps. Named after Mount Aspiring, one of New Zealand’s highest peaks, the park offers short walks and long hikes through beech forest resounding with the music of native birdsong and the chorus of waterfalls, through air so freshly crisp it feels almost drinkable. Tee for Timeout The Wānaka Golf Club is an immaculately groomed, 18-hole golf course set among views of the Southern Alps and Lake Wānaka. Only a short distance from Northbrook Wānaka, the Club was established in 1922. The course was extended in the 1930s, and again in the 1960s, transforming it into the challenging and exciting destination it is today. Beautiful all year round, the course is especially colourful in autumn, when the red, gold and yellow of the trees contrast with the pure white and blue of its unparalleled natural backdrop. The Club is home to some 1,300 members, with an active calendar of tournaments and other
events, and a lively, friendly and sociable 19th hole back in the clubhouse. The Club also has a practice range, a fivehole short course specially designed for putting and chipping practice, hire buggies and carts, a bar and café, and a pro shop fully stocked with the latest equipment and clothing. Join the Party A superb winery on a truly extraordinary piece of land overlooking Lake Wānaka and the Southern Alps, Rippon Vineyard is a local institution. With their cellar door and tastings, the Mills family invites the public to share in Rippon’s story, history, community, and wines. The tastings (and conversation) are free, but appointment bookings are essential. As well as the vineyard, there is also The Rippon Hall, a unique building, “quite literally born of the land upon which it stands.” The walls are made from compacted earth dug from Rippon’s hillsides, and the trusses and beams are made of timber from its larch forest. The hall is available to hire for weddings, conferences, and other events, and also runs a programme of local entertainment, including live music, dance and exhibitions.
