OUR PROGRAMS AND INSTRUCTORS For over 75 years, WAG Studio has built a strong reputation for providing excellence in art instruction for children, teens, and adults. Classes incorporate current exhibitions with special tours, creating a link between the art on view in the galleries and the art created in the classrooms. All of our instructors have degrees and/or diplomas from universities or art colleges and many have master’s degrees and additional certification in education. While most work in private studios, instructors also bring experience as members of artist-run centres, actors, administrators, art therapists, and designers. ADULT ART CLASSES Adults provide their own tools and supplies for classes unless otherwise indicated. Basic drawing and painting materials are provided for the first class, at which time supply lists are distributed. Intermediate Studio students should bring their own selection of supplies to the first class. For special workshops, pottery, and sculpture, supplies are generally included in the class cost. Students must provide their own tools for clay classes.

LAST CHANCE! Drawing on Mount Olympus Come face to face with the gods and goddesses of Olympus: The GrecoRoman Collections of Berlin. Take in the serenity of the galleries while you learn to draw idealized forms from ancient statuary. Analyze the human figure, determine proportions, and draw a convincing three-dimensional form. Interpretive and experimental approaches to observational drawing will be explored. Whether you are a novice or seasoned artist, you will improve your drawing skills, and deepen your appreciation of Greek and Roman sculpture in an encouraging and focused atmosphere.
Drawing Basics For students with little or no drawing experience, this introduction to the fundamental techniques and concepts of drawing will sharpen observational skills and build confidence. Practice translating what you see into what you draw as you work with a variety of subjects, including still life studies and the human form.
Learn the basics of sculpture by handbuilding with clay: modelling, coil, and slab work. Begin with representational and expressive clay figure work, then progress to individualized projects. Some clay finishes will be introduced. A tour of Olympus with a focus on classical sculpture will be available. Clay and firing costs are included.
Pottery Discover hand building, which includes slab building, slump molded forms, and throwing on the potter’s wheel. From basic thrown or hand-built forms you will produce mugs, bowls, and platters. You will also learn glazing and decorating techniques to finish your work and develop your own ideas related to functional and non-functional forms.
Mixed Media Combine disparate materials, employ a variety of techniques, and exercise your creativity to develop images and ideas. Enjoy the artistic process while learning effective methods such as paper craft, painting, drawing, printmaking, and 3D assemblage. You will complete a final project on a theme that interests you.

THE NEXT LEVEL The Figure in Art
Acrylic Painting
Prerequisite: Drawing Basics or equivalent experience • Get inspired! Using a variety of drawing materials, you will work from a model and learn about proportion, foreshortening, and other fundamental techniques for drawing people.
Prerequisite: Drawing Basics or equivalent experience • This course focuses on basic colour theory and particularities of painting with acrylics.
Pen and Ink Illustration Prerequisite: Drawing Basics or equivalent experience • Are you inspired by stories and daydreams? This course will show you how to bring stories to life and create a unique picture book. Innovative approaches to pen and ink illustration, visual interpretation, character design, composition, and book layout will be explored as you develop your own personal style in ink drawing.
Painting Basics Prerequisite: Drawing Basics or equivalent experience • Through your choice of acrylic or oil paint, get an introduction to basic colour theory, and learn to use various brushes and media, such as thinners and thickeners. Painting from still life, enhance your composition, decision making, and editing skills. As you progress through the course, your confidence as a painter will grow.
Drawing with Colour Prerequisite: Drawing Basics or equivalent experience • Develop your understanding of colour and its expressive potential for a variety of subjects: abstract and experimental drawing, still life, portraits, and landscapes. Find out fascinating facts about the history of pigments and the meanings of colours as you acquire new observational skills and familiarize yourself with various drawing media. This class serves as a transition from drawing to painting.
Life Drawing: Open Studio Coordinator: Don Nowicki 7-9:30pm • Wednesdays Jan 13–Mar 16 • $8 per evening This drop-in program provides an independent study of life drawing. Although no instruction is provided, you will have the opportunity to work from models in whatever materials you like. No advance registration is required; payment is collected each week at the WAG Studio front desk. Bring your own supplies.

CHILD AND TEEN classes are structured to accommodate the abilities of different age levels. These fun-filled classes are led by artist instructors and develop skills in various media, fostering creativity and imagination. Fall, Winter, and Spring sessions each consist of 10 classes on Saturdays.
WINTER CHILD AND TEEN ART CLASSES Child/Teen Class Levels: 1 = ages 5–6 • 2 = ages 7–9 • 3 = ages 10–13 • 4 = ages 14–17 Drawing and Painting 1 and 2
Animation
Ages 5–6, 7–9 • This course gives an introduction to basic techniques and fundamental concepts that artists use to create successful drawings and paintings. Students will develop observational skills, use their imaginations, and visit WAG exhibitions.
Ages 10–13 • This course provides a beginners’ introduction to animation processes and techniques. Students will work with claymation and other styles of animation if time allows. They will work on developing their own stories, characters, and designs to complete basic animation projects with emphasis on individual creativity. A variety of animated films will be studied. A DVD of students’ completed projects will be provided at the end of the session.
Drawing 3 and 4 Ages 10–13, 14–17 • With a focus on basic drawing techniques and concepts, this course enhances observation and imagination skills, explores a variety of drawing materials, and includes visits to Gallery exhibitions.
Mixed Media 1, 2, 3, and 4 Ages 5–6, 7–9, 10–13, 14–17 • Students will work with a variety of material that may include drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, or printmaking. Encouraging creativity, projects may be layered, mixed, and occasionally take more than one class to complete.
Clayworks 2 and 3 Ages 7–9, 10–13 • Students will work on a series of functional and sculptural projects using a variety of techniques to develop clay hand-building skills. Clay and related firing costs are included in the class fee.
Colour Studio Ages 14–17 • Whether you love to draw or are starting out as a beginner, expand your skills and gain confidence in new media. Try your hand at printmaking, watercolour, chalk pastel, and painting. Learn about the power of colour, composition, form, and scale, while creating fun, exploratory projects. Surprise yourself by what you can make!
