Chairman’s Report The role of the Winnipeg Art Gallery Board of Directors is to support, oversee, and ensure the WAG continues to be a community leader that enables people to see more of life and society through the experience of art and artistic innovation.
Each day, the Inuit Art Centre is getting closer and closer to reality. More than a gallery, it will be a centre for engagement, a place of education, discovery, and nation building for all ages. The Centre is at a seminal moment in our history and the Board continues to work diligently moving this initiative forward. The Board made progress on several governance issues such as bylaws, terms of reference, and policy that will assist with organization. The Board is also thrilled to have welcomed Sarah Gurevich, Nick Logan, and
In 2015/16, the WAG presented the monumental Olympus: The Greco-Roman Collections from Berlin. The Board was instrumental in securing four honorary patronages for this rare exhibition and was pleased to have the endorsement of three ambassadors and the former Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages. It was rewarding to see the incredible response of corporate sponsors, as well as the outstanding support from the Greek and Italian communities in Manitoba. In fact, this resulted in the WAG’s highest number of supporters to date for an exhibition!

Director & CEO Message Olympus dominated the last 12 months at the Winnipeg Art Gallery. The gods and goddesses kept audiences engaged with LEGO® viewports, summer camps, lectures, seminars, films, guided tours, a free French and English audio tour, and much more.
Expanding our education partnership with the University of Winnipeg, the WAG developed a joint Chair in the History of Indigenous Art of North America. Dr. Julie Nagam inaugurated this position, the first of its kind in Canada. In addition, Jaimie Isaac assumed her two-year role as the WAG’s Curatorial Resident of Indigenous and Contemporary Art. Both positions support the WAG’s mission to help people see and experience more through art with a distinct focus on Indigenous art. The Manitoba Inuit Association (MIA) joined the WAG

The WAG marked a major milestone with the 80th anniversary of WAG Studio and the 30th anniversary of the Through the Eyes of a Child exhibition. The Gallery’s Saturday Morning Art Classes started in 1936 and are still conducted each fall and winter at WAG Studio, one of the oldest civic art gallery education programs in Canada. WAG Studio alumni and instructors are among the country’s best-known artists, some of whom were highlighted in this year’s Through the Eyes of a Child show.
The Inuit Art Centre initiative received significant attention this year with major corporate and public sector gifts moving this project ever-closer to fruition. The Centre will be a transformative place led by the images and stories from the art, the people, and the land. The WAG Board, Foundation, members, volunteers, and staff all come together to make tremendous things happen at the WAG. I am incredibly grateful for their support as we work together to build the new Inuit Art Centre and continue to make the WAG a creative, relevant, and accessible place for our great community. Inuit Art Centre The WAG houses the world’s largest public collection of contemporary Inuit art, with more than 13,000 carvings, drawings, prints, texts, and new media. The Gallery began collecting Inuit art in the 1950s when this art form was largely unknown in Canada’s South. Supported by an unparalleled record of exhibitions, publications, and research, this collection represents Inuit identity, culture, and history. To celebrate the art and to honour the people who have created these works, the WAG is building an Inuit Art Centre, the first of its kind in the world. The 40,000-square-foot facility, to be located adjacent the current WAG building, will be a centre for exhibitions
Linking northern and southern Canada is at the heart of the Centre’s mission where art is a vehicle for artistic, educational, and economic development. Through regional, national, and international partnerships, the Centre will be a forum for innovation and exploration. With its exhibitions and programs, the Inuit Art Centre will help shift the public experience through art, establishing new pathways to understanding and appreciation.

2015/16 ACHIEVEMENTS JUNE: Manitoba Inuit Association (MIA) relocated to the WAG Studio building. The MIA shares more than just a space with the WAG: we have already collaborated on numerous projects to celebrate Inuit art and culture, and see this relationship expanding with the Inuit Art Centre. SEPTEMBER: The Winnipeg Foundation announced a $950,000 contribution to the Inuit Art Centre commemorating their 95th anniversary. The gift is one of the largest in the Foundation’s history. NOVEMBER: The premiers of Manitoba and Nunavut signed a renewed Memorandum of Understanding, which included a historic partnership agreement between Nunavut and the WAG. Nunavut’s rarely seen Fine Art Collections, numbering more than 7,500 pieces, is on loan to the WAG for a five-year period, with $1 million in joint funding. The WAG is honoured the people of Nunavut entrust us to care for their collection. NOVEMBER: The Province of Manitoba announced its contribution of $15 million to the Inuit Art Centre building project. DECEMBER: BMO Financial Group announced its $1 million contribution, the project’s largest private donation to date. MARCH: The City of Winnipeg committed $5 million over five years to the Inuit Art Centre. The 2016/17 operating budget includes the first $1 million. Exhibition Highlights With Olympus on site for 12 months, WAG visitors were transported to ancient Greece and Rome through 160 treasures from one of the most celebrated collections in the world. As one of only two stops in North America, Olympus was Manitoba’s first major exhibition of classical antiquities in over half a century.

These nine-by-seven-foot works of ink and acrylic on canvas are composed of landscape tropes in the shape of surreal human heads that seem to float in ambiguous space. Unmoored from any depiction of the body, their scale demands a paradoxical bodily encounter with the viewer, one that parellels Koop’s physical engagement with both medium and ground in creating them. Each of the eight heads recall elements of one of the artist’s earlier landscape series, such as Satellite Cities, Native Fires, and Deep Bay, and all pose existential questions about who we are, how we are socially constructed, and what we understand about our

The George & Tannis Richardson Collection of Inuit Sculpture (May 30–Feb 15) contained 39 significant works. STUDIO PROGRAMS WAG Studio is one of the largest and oldest civic art gallery education programs in Canada. In 2015 we offered classes and workshops to approximately 1,700 children, teens, and adults, with 40 classes for adults, and 50 public and 32 sponsored classes for children and teens. We employ 24 professional artists to teach in a variety of media: sculpture, ceramics, drawing, painting, mixed media, illustration, and animation.
This was a special year, as it marked two significant anniversaries: the 80th year of WAG Studio and the 30th annual Through the Eyes of a Child exhibition, highlighting the creations of the young people who attend art classes at WAG Studio each year. The Gallery marked these milestones with a free event on March 26, featuring the exhibit opening, art activities, cake, and more. As an added bonus this year, the Through the Eyes of a Child exhibition included work by some of the distinguished Manitoba artists who are past WAG Studio students or instructors including Michael Boss, Elvira Finnigan, Wanda Koop, Tim Schouten, Jordan van Sewell, and Diane Whitehouse.

Some of the scrapbooks were created by the School of Art, William John Bulman (1870–1938), a founder of the WAG , and other individuals. Scrapbooks requiring the most urgent attention were selected and scanned during the summer and fall of 2015. With funding by the Manitoba Heritage Grants and Young Canada Works Project, digitization was carried out by a library summer student and archives volunteers.

Programs and Events BIBLIODERIVE: A Literary Wandering was held in the library in November. The event was a collaboration by University of Manitoba School of Art professor Sarah Ciurysek and the Clara Lander Library to present the Situationist art practice of dérive or “drift” as applied to libraries and archives. The event included site-specific art projects by two art students and Ciurysek, and brought a number of artists, students, and the general public into the library. Several orientations for students and teachers from the University of Manitoba, the University of Winnipeg, colleges, and high schools were provided during the academic school year. Library orientations enabling teachers to explore specific art topics not available in other local libraries were also organized by the WAG.
EVENTS It was a monumental year for events at the WAG with guests coming to celebrate Olympus. The three-day opening event attracted over a thousand visitors. The year saw more than 120 corporate rental clients for AGMs, alumni dinners, and networking events. The WAG proudly hosted the first annual Indigenous Innovation Summit, brought to Winnipeg by the National Association of Friendship Centres in Ottawa. The two-day conference was a big success, exploring local and national issues while promoting healing and partnership The WAG organized and presented over 30 special events, including the inaugural CRAFTED, the Gallery’s first-ever juried craft show and sale. Gallery Ball 2015 was a sold out success, offering guests an exclusive look at Olympus at the sumptuous dinner party in the galleries. In February, Art & Soul returned with Clash of the Titans, where Spartans, gods, and Monsters revelled in art and music. Nuit Blanche once again welcomed huge crowds from all over the city who lined up around the building for our late-night art party. Thousands of guests experienced Olympus, danced to the beats of Memetic, and participated in art-making activities into the wee hours.
