Mission Statement

The mission of Winnetka Community House is to enrich the lives of North Shore residents, their families and friends by providing diverse educational, cultural, social and recreational opportunities for people of all ages. This privately supported unique facility does not receive tax dollars.

Navigating this Program Guide

The 2016 Fall Program Guide has been redesigned to better serve you. Programs are in 4 different categories including Enrichment and Education, Fine Arts, Performing Arts, and Sports and Athletics. Within those categories programs are in order of age (with a few exceptions.) Special Events and Birthday Parties are located in the front of the program guide and Fitness Centre and Facility Information is loacted in the back.

Editorial Policy

Complete details of program policies, procedures, and guidelines are sometimes inadvertently omitted. Errors in days, times, registration requirements and fees may occur in the brochure. When such errors occur the staff will advise you of the change as quickly as possible.

Registration Info

Member registration opens July 18, 2016 and will be processed on a first come, first served basis.

All non-members will be able to register July 25, 2016.

Registration received through the mail, fax, or in person will be processed by 5PM the next business day. The best way to ensure that your registration is processed immediately is by using our online registration at winnetkacommunityhouse.org

How To Register

» To register for a membership simply list all eligible members on the registration form. Then check the box and add the membership fee in with your registration.

» Register for programs online at winnetkacommunityhouse.org or on the enclosed registration form.

» Please print clearly.

» Read and fill out form completely.

» By listing your email address, you agree to receive email communications from Winnetka Community House. If you do not wish to receive these emails, please unsubscribe.

» Sign the registration form.

» Unsigned forms will not be processed, but will be returned to you. This will delay processing your registration.

» Registration forms may be mailed or faxed. Registration by telephone is not accepted.

Credit Cards

You may use your credit card for all programs which appear with a class number or for a Fitness Centre membership. Fitness Centre memberships are obtained at the Fitness Centre only. Be sure to fill out the credit card information completely and sign the form. We do not take telephone registration. However, if you are paying by credit card, you may fax your registration to (847) 446-0609.

Cancellation of Classes

Prior to any class, registration is reviewed to determine if the enrollment is sufficient to hold the class. Register early! Do not wait

until the day of the first class to register. You may find the class has been cancelled due to low enrollment.

Prorated Policy

Classes may be prorated if you would like to enroll in a class after it has started, provided the instructor has space and allows for late registration. The supervisor must approve the prorated amount.

Refund Policy

Full refunds will be issued for courses that are cancelled by Winnetka Community House due to insufficient registration. A refund, less a 10% service charge (not to exceed $25), may be granted if the refund request is received five full working days prior to the start of the program. No refunds will be allowed after this time unless a medical condition develops and a written explanation from a physician on his/her letterhead is presented. Due to advanced reservation requirements, no refunds for trips, outings or special events will be given.

Emergency Closings

The Winnetka Community House endeavors to keep its facilities and programs operating whenever possible. There are times, however, when weather, road conditions or facility malfunctions dictate that programs and/or services must be cancelled or temporarily postponed or entire facilities closed. In order to provide employees and patrons with a safe and secure environment in which to work and play, the Winnetka Community House reserves the right to close a particular facility or cancel a program when deemed necessary.

Inclement Weather Policy

If school District 36 cancels classes for the entire day, all Winnetka Community House children’s programs (including Free-To-BeKids childcare) starting before noon will be cancelled. Decisions on all adult programs and children’s programs starting after noon, will be made on a case-by-case basis. Please

Religious Holidays

Winnetka Community House makes every effort to avoid scheduling programs or events on religious holidays. Anyone affected will be offered the option of attending a session of the same program on a different date as a make-up, or receiving a prorated refund of the series fee for the date missed.

» Winnetka Community House is not responsible for the supervision of children on site prior to or remaining on site after the established program times.

» Winnetka Community House is handicapped accessible.

» If you or any member of your family has special needs, please see our Executive Director.

» Winnetka Community House receives no tax dollars. We are supported by our programs, fund raising events, our annual campaign, and donations.

» Winnetka Community House assumes no responsibility and carries no accident or medical insurance for injuries or accidents at programs or activities on Community House property. It is advisable to review your own personal health insurance plan to be certain that you and your family have proper and sufficient insurance coverage.

Stephen Dustman Memorial Scholarship Fund

Winnetka Community House has established the Stephen Dustman Memorial Scholarship Fund to any resident who would like to take part in a Winnetka Community House activity, but is unable to render full payment. Persons interested may submit their need in writing to the attention of the Executive Director for confidential review. If further information is desired, please call our main office.

Donations to this scholarship fund are gratefully accepted.

Member !

A one year Community House Membership is $195. All family members in your household are eligible for membership benefits. When registering for, just list your family members, and they will automatically be eligible for benefits when registering.

Winnetka Community House Membership Program

To sign up for a membership, please list all members of your household below and fill out a registration form. If registering for a class, please add $195 to your total registration fee. Hot Shots Sports Holiday Sports Camp

Join us for our annual Holiday Camp where kids participate in a stimulating and competitive environment. Focus will be on helping the kids with teamwork and fundamentals while playing a variety of sports throughout the week. Prizes and awards will be given out daily, and participants will be rewarded for effort and sportsmanship. Chess Wizards Camp

Would you like to go on a journey to learn cool openings, mid-games with all the pins, double attacks, endgames and even bughouse? Would you like to be a part of a successful chess team, designed to cater to all levels of chess players? If so, join Chess Wizards for this camp! Campers will learn how to play chess in a fun atmosphere with both indoor and outdoor activities. This camp is for beginning and intermediate level players. No previous experience is needed. Children should bring their own lunch and a drink, but snacks will be provided. All campers will receive a chessboard, a Chess Wizards shirt, score book, trophy, work folder and certificate of achievement!

Party Packages Include

» 90 minutes of party time which includes 45 minutes of entertainment or instruction.

» Party room setup (tables and chairs) and cleanup.

Call 847-446-3207 to book. Due to the increased popularity of this program, we strongly suggest that parties be booked at least three weeks in advance! Cancellation within five days of party will result in forfeiture of fee.

Toddler Sing-a-long

Toddlers and parents sing, dance, and play rhythm instruments together for a musical birthday celebration. The instructor leads and entertains the party with song utilizing the guitar, puppets, bubbles, and various rhythm instruments.

Puppets, Stories, Songs, And More!

This party has everything, including interactive storytelling with guitar accompanied sing-a-longs, and ventriloquist puppets too! Eclectic program with lots of giggles!

Dance & Imagination

Let your child’s imagination run wild! This journey is filled with imagination, movement, Music Theater and bubbles of fun. Themes: Princess/Cinderella, Elsa, Little Mermaid, Fairy Princess, Barbie, Peter Pan/Pirate, Wizard of Oz.

Animal Balloon Party

Balloon Animals are a huge hit at birthday parties! Now your party can have balloon animals (dogs, butterflies, swords, giraffes, etc.) being made non-stop for 45 minutes by the Magic Team of Gay Kantor. The kids will do more than just play with the balloons; they’ll also get to decorate their animals with stickers and markers. At the end of the party all the kids will get to take home their very own collection of assorted balloon animals.

Hula Party

In this authentic and entertaining Hawaiian dance party, children will learn some fun Hawaiian words, and then watch an authentic hula dance. Next, the children will be given a hula lesson and taught a basic hula dance they can perform at the end of the party. Children will be provided with Hula skirts to wear for the party.

StarWalk

Jump for joy! The Starwalk is a 20’ x 20’ air-inflated balloon bounce. Experience the fun of a carnival at your party complete with scooters, balls and hula-hoops. No instructor or entertainer is provided.

Clowns

Our experienced performers attract and hold a child’s attention. Parties can include balloon animals, games, kooky magic, and interactive dance.

Pee Wee Sports

Summer Garden Party (July- October)

Explore, taste and grow! Take a tour of our organic vegetable garden, taste what’s growing and make a fun take home project too!

Basketball

Hoops4Health will have their highly trained staff set up fun basketball games such as a 3-point contest, dribbling contest, hot shot, and a full court game. Contest winners will receive various prizes!

Birthday Parties

Ceramics

Create your own personalized treasure (mug, bowl, plate, jewelry box, etc). Design, decorate, and paint with creativity! Instructors will assist in assembly and demonstrate decorating techniques. These handmade treasures will be fired, glazed and ready to be picked up 7–10 days after the party.

Magic

Abracadabra! Children enjoy an amazing display of magical tricks at this exciting party. Our professional magicians gear their magic to children of all ages.

Martial Arts

Children will receive a group Martial Arts lesson and learn how to break their own board! As a special treat, the kids will be sure to enjoy a short demonstration by the instructor. This party is a high energy outlet for active kids, all done in a fun and safe environment.

Magic and Music

This show is a very interactive blend magic with music, games and contests. a childfriendly magical performance including many opportunities for the children to help with the tricks. Sand Art

Each guest will create a unique sand sculpture or candle by layering a colorful assortment of wax crystals or art sand into your choice of many special containers. Guests create their own masterpieces to take home.

Sports

If your child loves sports, this is the party for him or her! A trained instructor will lead the children in sporting activities such as basketball, dodge ball, floor hockey and more. Children are sure to work up an appetite for that birthday cake!

Animals

Thrill your party guests with animals such as a Siberian chipmunk, snake, chinchilla, gecko, hedgehog and more. Children learn about each animal in this informative and fun hands-on party.

Wacky Relays and Other Goofy Games

What do you get when you cross the Olympic games with scooters, hula-hoops, balloons, and more? You get Wacky Relays! Outrageous fun all! WARNING: not everyone can handle this much fun!

Yoga Bash

Mind, Body, Fun! Children will be energized through age appropriate yoga poses, songs and games. Yoga inspired crafts, music and movement to spark each child’s creativity and sharpen their concentration, will be used. (Individual yoga mats may be purchased from instructors. They make a great give-a-way!)

Hip Hop Dance

This party celebrates another birthday with the energy of Hip-Hop inspired dance. Everyone will be ready to burn up the dance floor while playing dance games and performing a special choreographed dance for the birthday child.

Little Bits

Does your two or three year old enjoy a variety of activities? Join in free play, circle time, art, songs and simple child-centered projects. There will be interaction with other children and time for lots of individual attention, encouraging children to develop such social skills as sharing, caring and cooperation. Unfortunately, staff may not change diapers. You may register for as many days as you like. Children must be 2 years of age by September 9, 2016 This is a drop off class.

Fall Harvest Fun

Join us when harvesting season is at its peak! Enjoy the fruit of locally grown labor with fresh produce from the garden. Learn techniques for harvesting garden vegetables. Each family will take home a small brown paper bag of produce that they harvested and a handmade bird feeder. Please dress for the weather and wear clothes that are suitable for outdoor activities. Science for Young Scientists

Join Mad Science for loads of handson science fun. Each week will involve experiments and exploration designed for younger scientists. There will be lots of fun and exciting science topics to investigate and things to take home. All materials are included.

Early Childhood

Cooking with Amigos

Every day promises to include a fun-filled delicious activity! We will chop, mix, slice, peel and eat all while learning Spanish! From the creators of Camp Amigos, Cooking With Amigos uses a highly controlled vocabulary introduced in conjunction with fun-to-make recipes. As we wait for our creations to cook we will have lots of fun playing games in Spanish! The instructor is a native Spanish speaker who has been carefully trained to implement the Amigos Programs curriculum. Please do not register if your child has allergies to egg, soy, dairy, wheat, nuts or berries.

Lunch Adventures

Come over and have lunch and fun with your friends! Come and take a different journey each week. Come be a pirate and look for treasures one week and the next week become a chef and bake cookies. Enrich your child’s kindergarten year with an educational adventure!Extraordinary Kids emphasizes fun and creativity, challenges curious minds, enhances learning through hands-on exploration, encourages critical thinking and establishes a life-long love of learning. Tiny Treks is an innovative program for families who want to teach their children about the world through exploration of their natural surroundings. We believe children learn best through hands-on experiences which build self-esteem and encourage a love of nature. Creative Paws, Inc. was founded in 2001 by Ashlee Trotter, BS, CPDT-KA, and provides group classes and private lessons for dog obedience training and behavior problems. Ashlee holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology from Michigan State University. Prior to pursuing her dog training interests she honed her skills of positive reinforcement training while working with zoo animals at facilities in the Midwest. Ashlee’s competition dog Spirit was the American Kennel Club’s (AKC) #1 ranked German Wirehaired Pointer in agility for 2008-2012. He is the 2nd of his breed to earn an AKC Master Agility Championship title, as well as the only German Wirehaired Pointer to reach the finals of an AKC National Agility event, a feat Ashlee has handled him to accomplish twice. Aside from agility he is titled in traditional obedience, rally obedience, tracking, hunting and dock diving for a combined total of 26 titles and counting.

Michael “The Dog Guru” Jayko

With 25 years of dog training experience, Michael has witnessed and worked with almost every aspect in the field of dog behavior including competition obedience, agility, tracking, scent discrimination, police dogs, behavior modification, diabetic alert dogs and guide dog training. With a Bachelor’s Degree in the Applied Behavioral Sciences, Michael combines human and dog psyches to create a successful bond between the dog and its handler.

As an instructor with Guide Dogs for the Blind, Michael was involved with the training of Roselle, a yellow lab, who successfully traversed 78 flights to guide her handler to safety during the chaos of 9/11. As a member of the APDT, CPDT and NADRA, a certified Canine Good Citizen instructor, and a mentor for Animal Behavior College, Michael works with all breeds and issues.

Jenifer Thoem has been sculpting in clay and teaching for over 20 years. A native Georgian, she received a BFA in Ceramics from Georgia Southern University in 1994. She moved to Wilmette from Richmond, VA where she owned and operated The Creative Foundry, a ceramics production/ teaching studio. Jenifer has experience teaching hand building, wheel and mixed media sculpture classes in both public and private schools, and Community Recreation Ceramic Centers in both Georgia and Virginia. Jenifer’s whimsical clay and found object sculptures can be found in many private collections around the U.S.

Jill Dunbar has been a creative force in the commercial and film production world since 2001. She has worked as a set dresser and wardrobe stylist on many major productions.

Her interest in the arts started at a young age when she got her first camera. From that point on, her camera has never left her. She has shot everything from product, events, fashion, famous actors, sports stars and everyday people. Her work behind the camera has led her to The Chicago International Film Festival 3 times, The Swell Film Festival, The Arizona International Film Festival and The Hollywood Family Film Festival. She has worked on several TV shows, documentaries and music videos.

Jill’s’ love for art goes beyond digital. Her art which includes paintings, clay and metal has been shown in Chicago, Skokie, Wilmette, Highland Park and Ontario, Canada.

Mondern Squares (Square Dancing)

This is today’s Square Dancing, and it’s probably not what you think it is. It is not fancy dance steps, country music, frilly clothes or cowboy shirts. Modern Squares is just walking. The music you walk to is varied, ranging from the Beatles to modern hits. It is casual and fun. In addition, Modern Squares is great exercise for the body and brain. You’ll walk several miles a night. And your mind will be challenged as you work with seven others on your team (square) to master the plays (calls) and apply them to your formation. Modern Squares is teamwork. You’re working a real-time puzzle with seven other people. And when you nail the outcome, it’s really quite exhilirahting. Modern Squares is for everyone, couples looking for a date night, singles looking for a social outing, and families as well. Full Day of Play

Designed to socialize children to a full day of kindergarten, the Full Day of Play program provides for pick up from both the bus stop out front and Winnetka Community Nursery school next door, so there’s no need to pick up!!! Using our innovative Sports School curriculum, players will learn about traditional sports as well as sports history. Players will review health, fitness and have time for a snack. This summer, learn from the best and let the Chicago Bulls teach you how to play like a Champion! Since 1999, the Chicago Bulls have brought quality basketball camps to boys and girls throughout Chicagoland. More than 45,000 youth basketball players have developed essential basketball fundamentals including: ball handling, passing, shooting, rebounding, individual moves, footwork, and team concepts. High school and college courts across the country are home to graduates of a Chicago Bulls Basketball Summer Camp. We work on every part of your child?s game. On the final day all participants will receive an evaluation form and graduation certificate. Student to instructor ratio will be 10:1 or less. Every Chicago Bulls summer camp participant receives an EXCLUSIVE UNITED CENTER EXPERIENCE!! Each camp participant, along with one guest, will be invited to the United Center, home of the Chicago Bulls, for a Q&A session with a Bulls personality and a current and or former Bulls player! During the camp each player will compete in the Bulls Skills Competition. At the end of the summer, the top three contestants will compete in the finals on the floor of the United Center (date TBD). Youth Fencing

The Olympic sport of fencing demands a blend of tactical and strategic thought and a physical execution of those decisions. This has led many to describe the sport as “physical chess.” Fencing also teaches balance and discipline and even more than this, it’s fun! Christie Southern was a nationally ranked competitive figure skater at the age of 8 and one of the founders of Duke University’s first Womens’ Crew Team. She is a Certified Sports Performance Specialist and principal at HeadCoach Performance Sports. Also certified by the American Council of Sports Medicine and trained by two of the nation?s most prominent experts in the field, including Dr. Jack Lesyk, Sports Psychologist to the Cleveland Cavaliers, Christie has had considerable success in coaching athletes of various ages and abilities. She recently helped a high school varsity golfer to lower his average score by six strokes which enabled him to receive a scholarship bid to his first choice Division I university golf program. Does the practice of meditation and mindfulness lead to a serene, stress-free, perfect life? No, life isn’t perfect. However, the practice of meditation has been shown to reduce stress, boost immunity, increase happiness, and lower blood pressure. Learning the art of meditation and mindfulness can help you listen better, think more clearly, focus better, and be more compassionate. Many people try to meditate and stop because it becomes another addition to their to-do list. And many don’t begin because they are afraid that they can’t find the time. This class will help you understand the art of meditation and mindfulness, and most important integrate these practices into your daily lives.

Jeffra Nicholson started her career as a teacher, and college administrator. Jeffra left education and entered the education publishing industry as an Education Consultant and then as a Marketer, where stress became her constant companion. Jeffra meditated off and on throughout her twenties, but began to have a serious meditation practice to help reduce the stress in her life and to have more balance. Jeffra has been meditating for over 30 years. She has also written a book, The Tao of Mia and Leo, discussing her personal journey to find balance and contentment, and how she learned the importance of mediation and mindfulness. Jeffra has also practiced Yoga for over 15 years and is a licensed Body Work Therapist.

Participants are carefully initiated into this karate which focuses on alertness of mind, self-control and mental strategies to meet life challenges. Traditional Karate is a martial art which emphasizes the principles and applications of a weaponless self-defense through the use of total body dynamics and mental discipline. Students will constantly strive for technical excellence and enhancement of ones character. The following items are optional and will incur additional costs: uniforms, belt tests and tournaments.Belt Ranking System: There are 11 belt levels (kyu) before first-degree black belt (shodan). Meet Our Karate Instructors

Frank Chrzanowski, chief instructor, developed the Traditional Karate Program for the Winnetka Community House in 1989. He has trained in Karate since 1975 and has attained the rank of fourth degree black belt in the Japan Karate Association. He has been featured in articles in the Chicago Tribune, the Sun Times and the Pioneer Press, and has appeared on local and national television programs.

Ron Stein has trained in karate since 1981. His karate experience extends to Europe and Japan, where he lived for four years, training under many instructors and studying various Japanese martial arts. He has been with the Winnetka Community House Karate Program since 1994.

General Taekwondo Information

Taekwondo is a 2000 year old martial art offering a variety of benefits for people of all ages and physical abilities. Students have the opportunity to improve concentration and self esteem, achieve lifelong physical fitness and learn self-defense skills. Classes are taught under the direction of G. Master Ki Hong Kim (Ninth Dan Kukkiwon World Taekwondo Headquarters). A $45 uniform fee is required at the first class. Belt testing is offered through the KH Kim Taekwondo at an additional fee and is held twice a year. All colored belt students are required to have complete sparring gear.

Participants will learn fundamental skills through weekly practice and games. Adult volunteers coach all teams. First grade games will have youth size basketballs and eight foot basketball rims. Second grade will have youth size basketballs and 9 foot basketball rims. Third grade games will have adult size basketballs, 10 foot basketball rims, full court play and score will be kept. All games will have staff referees and timekeepers. All participants will receive a team t-shirt and commemorative basketball.

1. Teams will be established according to school (Crow Island, Greeley, Hubbard Woods, Sacred Heart, Faith Hope, North Shore Country Day and more), there will be no evaluation. When filling out your registration form please remember to insert your child/children?s school. Otherwise placement on a particular school team cannot be guaranteed. If there are more than 10 children from a school, multiple teams will be formed. If there are too few children from any one school, children will be placed on a team according to village of residence. Due to the number of children in this program requests will not be taken

2. Each team will have a one hour practice during the week. Time, assigned at a later date, will be between Monday and Friday, 5:00-8:00 p.m. There will be two weeks of practice before the first game.

3. Games will be held on Saturdays. Time, assigned at a later date, will be sometime between 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

Jr. Fitness Training Class

Those ages 12-13 may become Community House Fitness Centre members by completing a personalized training program with a personal trainer. The training program is a one hour session that will cover all aspects of membership including gym etiquette, proper warm up, strength training, cardiovascular conditioning, flexibility and cool down. Once registered, you will be contacted by a Community House personal trainer to schedule your session.

Founded in 1924, the North Shore Art League is a non-profit arts organization offering art classes for adults and children. As the only art center located in Winnetka, the NSAL not only offers art education, but also lectures, workshops, field trips, gallery shows and special art events to the entire North Shore community. A summer juried art fair, Art in the Village, takes place in Hubbard Woods Parkright in the middle of the Hubbard Woods Design District and along bustling Green Bay Road in June.

Located for over 90 years on the second floor of the Community House, classes are held in an historic, professional art studio featuring skylights and a large stone fireplace as well as a well-equipped print room facility. Classes in drawing, painting (oil, acrylic, and watercolor), pastels, etching, printmaking, figure study, encaustic and more are taught by a distinguished faculty–offering a unique, creative experience.

The Winnetka Youth Organization, commonly known as “the YO”, is a nonprofit teen drop-in center located in the basement of the Winnetka Community House. We have been around since 1969, and serve as the only youth organization of its kind in Winnetka. Each year, the YO provides services to upwards of 1000 teens from this community. This includes recreational activities, music events, social service, diversity and education projects, and participation on the Youth Leadership Board.

The mission of the Winnetka Youth Organization is to foster individual development in junior high and high school youth in the North Shore by providing adult-to-youth mentoring, prevention services, and opportunities for leadership, citizenship, and, education within a safe, informal environment. Full refunds will be issued for courses that are cancelled by Winnetka Community House due to insuﬃcient registration. A refund, less a 10% service charge (not to exceed $25), may be granted if the refund request is received ﬁve full working days prior to the start of the program. No refunds will be allowed after this time unless a medical condition develops and a written explanation from a physician on his/her letterhead is presented. Due to advanced reservation requirements, no refunds for trips, outings, or special events will be given. Classes may be prorated if you would like to enroll in a class after it has started, provided the instructor has space, and allows for late registration.
