Thank you for your continued support of the Community House. Unlike a tax-supported park district or library the not-for-profit Community House is unique — literally supported by the largesse of the very community that it serves. Every class, performance, and service program that takes place in the House — from the Fitness Center to Matz Hall, the Winnetka Youth Organization, classrooms, and the beautiful outdoor gardens — is made possible by donations from community members who understand and sustain this vital organization’s mission.

PROGRAM INNOVATION
Growing to better serve the needs of our dog obedience patrons, we have added more program days and instructors with the help of our new partner, Anything is PAWZIBLE, a city-based training program expanding into the suburbs.
Engagement increased 22% this year in our popular youth basketball league, where 236 children honed their skills practicing and playing in games against other area players without the hassle of traveling to a different location for each activity. Skyline Theatre Company continues to garner wide appeal with over 300 participants ranging from Pre-K through 5th grade. The Company was honored with the Award of Excellence in Creative Drama by the Illinois Theatre Association. Our own Children’s Theatre of Winnetka was voted Best Children’s Theater in the Suburbs by Better magazine readers.
Evolving and Expanding - Our re-branded dance program now named Community House School of Dance serves over 100 students with Ballet, Jazz, Tap and Musical Theatre classes for ages 2 ½ and up. We opened The Music Studio for all ages to grow their skills on multiple instruments, partnered with Piven Theatre to expand our theater courses, and we added English as a Second Language (ESL) and STEM classes to our well-rounded programming. Our fitness center was first on the North Shore to add Peloton spin bikes, and we joined forces with StretchXperience to help members with recovery and reconditioning.
Exciting special events captured the attention of our guests including: Circus Boy, Dave Rudolf’s Halloween Spooktacular Concert, Smarty Pants Big Balloon Show, Polar Express Family Movie Night, Magician John Measner, Family Bingo Night, Matt Wilhelm’s BMX Show, and JG’s Reptile Road Show.

Beyond The Fiscal Year 2019 – Happening Now
• This fall our robust programs inspired record registration numbers with 946 people enrolled!
• Skyline Studios Children’s Theatre is presenting Frozen Jr. with an all-time high of 420 students registered for the program!
• Our acclaimed Children’s Theatre of Winnetka (CTW) will reach a milestone in 2020, when it presents its 90th production, The Lion King, in the spring!
• Our extraordinary director, actor, dancer, choreographer and mentor, Toby Nicholson, was recognized for decades of service with a beautiful article in the Winnetka Living magazine.
• We celebrated the opening of our newest tenant, Ann Latinovich, portrait artist, at a ribbon cutting ceremony in September.
OUR MISSION
The Community House Winnetka is a unique nonprofit organization on Chicago’s North Shore that has played a special role in the community for more than a century. Founded in 1911, the mission of the Community House is to enrich the lives of North Shore residents, their families, and friends by providing educational, cultural, social and recreational opportunities for people of all ages.
Celebrating the Past and Looking to the Future
It is our privilege to share the Fiscal Year 2019 Annual Report with you, reflecting an extraordinary year at the Community House. The achievements of the past twelve months are an inspiring testament to the commitment of many dedicated donors, volunteers, partners and staff members. Thank you for being an essential member of our Community House family.
During the past year, the Community House took significant steps toward improving the guest experience throughout our 3 1/2 acre campus. Highlights include critical building and grounds restoration work, including installing a new roof and tuckpointing the entire building, renovating the Historic Garden and repairing its beautiful signature arches, upgrading the landscaping and grounds and installing a new staff parking lot. Within the walls of the Community House, we designed and delivered innovative and robust programs to serve community members of all ages, across a broad range of interests. Tying this all together, we thoughtfully worked to design and implement a dynamic rebranding and marketing plan, which is already engaging the community in new and different ways. We have received positive feedback from the community and initial results showing that we are on the right track. We are very proud that our fantastic staff was able to put these big ideas into action while maintaining a balanced budget. The question is, where do we go from here? The Board of Governors and its Committees have invested considerable time and thought to developing a new strategic plan, one that informs our future work and fulfills our commitment to be a relevant, sustainable, and welcoming gathering place for all. The Community House fosters ways for people to connect with each other and to grow — something that is of enormous importance in this age of busy schedules and technology overload. Our mission is more relevant now than it ever has been.
To help us fulfill our mission and realize our vision, we are extremely pleased to share that the Community House recently welcomed Amy Skalinder as our new President. An accomplished and engaging leader, Amy is excited to reconnect with old friends at the Community House and to meet new ones. We hope you will stop by to visit and welcome her to “our House.”

Amy spent her early career working in outdoor education and social work before joining the staff at Evanston’s McGaw YMCA, where over the course of a decade, she served as the organization’s Director of Youth and Family Services, Member Services Director and Vice President of Operations. In her six-year role as Executive Director of Angles in Northfield (formerly known as LINKS), Amy oversaw a team that provided reproductive health care and health education to over 15,000 teens and young adults each year Most recently, Amy served as the Executive Director of the Howard Area Community Center in Chicago. She is a graduate of Evanston Township High School and holds a Bachelor of Arts from Tufts University as well as a Master of Social Work from Loyola University Chicago.
