Here is the chance for your 7-12 year old to sell outgrown clothes and toys for fun and profit. A registration form must be filled out for selling space (one six foot table). More than one child can be at a table. There must be one adult per table. The event is open to the public for shopping. Sale will be held outdoors, weather permitting.

Jump for joy! The Starwalk is a 20’ x 20’ air-inflated balloon bounce. Experience the fun of a carnival at your party complete with scooters, balls and hula-hoops. No instructor or entertainer is provided. 3 and older $295 for 20 guest. $5 for each additional child.

Amazing Minds Amazing Minds

How would you like to go on an incredible journey with Amazing Minds (an extension of Extraordinary Kids) after school? Explore topics such as countries near and far, land and water animals, rocks and minerals and stormy weather. Build rock collections, excavate ancient Egyptian tombs and shop in a simulated grocery store. Learn to use tools that help you solve problems such as calculators, magnifying glasses, microscopes, tape measures and geology kits. Engage in science experiments where you dissect owl pellets, wear prism glasses and make raisins bounce. Top it off with exciting related take-home prizes such as an Australian boomerang. Join all the fun exploration in this enrichment program. All materials are included. Each session a different country is explored, exposing students to geography as well as different languages and cultures.

Advanced Video Game Programming TechStars by Computer Explorer

In this advanced level course, using Scratch, we will focus on advanced game elements:. These include building multiple levels, integrating animated sequences into games and using variables to keep track of score, high score, avatar lives and game speed. Working with a partner, you will build multiple games including a maze game and a side scrolling space shooter game. Time permitting, you and your partner will be able to work on designing an independent original advanced game project which can be posted online. Do not worry if you haven not tried Scratch before. We will review the basics at the start and help you dive right in!

Lessons are designed to cover fundamentals, technique, classical repertoire, ear training, sight reading and theory. Guitar Lessons: Private Instruction

This class is for the beginning guitarist. Students will learn how to apply basic musical concepts such as rhythm, harmony and melody to the guitar. Amazing Art Sunshine Arts and Crafts

Amazing Art combines all your favorite art projects and mixed media into one unique class. Kids will make tie dye shirts for use as art smocks for the session, experience pottery painting, create fired ceramic arts, paint a canvas acrylic painting, do recycled arts projects and more. Lessons will include concepts and techniques kids can use for a lifetime. The experience of creating awesome projects will result in great self esteem and a sense of accomplishment. Finished work will be taken home immediately. This is a drop off program. Amazing Art offers all new lessons for every session.

The Joy of Creativity: Stories, Art and Play Carole Pearlman and Staff

This class offers an art curriculum designed especially for the preschool and kindergarten child featuring creative explorations through stories, art and play. The class begins with plenty of time for free expression, followed by an introduction to the project via a book and then independent creativity begins. This is a mixed media class using watercolors, oil pastels, tempera paint, collage and more. We do a new project each week! All materials are included.

Meet our Youth Enrichment instructors

Extraordinary Kids– Kindergarten Enrichment

The curriculum and materials for Extraordinary Kids has been personally created and developed by directors Carol Modes and Susie Blau. Modes worked for the Deerfield Public Schools for 14 years teaching kindergarten, second and fourth grade classes and as a gifted education instructor. Susie Blau has a Master of Arts degree in behavioral psychology and has worked as a consultant to families and educators for over 15 years.

Elyse Ferdinand holds a degree from Northern Illinois University in Early Childhood Education. She has over 18 years of preschool teaching experience.

Mary Fisher has been working in the early childhood profession for over 20 years and is currently pursuing her certification in Early Childhood.

Korean pianist Yueun Kim is a winner of numerous competitions including the Sejong Music Competition and Bach Stravinsky Awards. She has performed at the Chautauqua Music Festival, the Castleman Quartet Program, and the Korean American Day Celebration. A teaching artist, Kim has given a presentation on the hidden gem intermediate pieces by Alexander Tansman at the National Conference of Keyboard Pedagogy 2013. In 2012, she joined the faculty at the Hyde Park Suzuki Institute. She received a Bachelor’s degree in Piano Performance with High Distinction from the Eastman School of Music, and she is currently pursuing her Master’s Degree in Piano Performance and Pedagogy at Northwestern University.

Carole Pearlman is the founder of The Joy of Creativity art program. Inspiring curriculum, freedom of expression and opportunities to explore many art materials make this innovative program a creative success for each student. Carole holds a BFA in painting and a Master’s Degree in Education and Psychology.

Brandon Seyferth has been teaching guitar in Glencoe and Chicago for more than seven years. With a focus on results-based instruction, Brandon is a fun, dynamic, versatile and experienced teacher. He has performed, composed, and recorded with such notables as Jackson Browne, Victor DeLorenzo (Violent Femmes), Pat MacDonald (Timbuk3), Clyde Stubblefield (James Brown and the most sampled drummer in hip hop), and Jay Bennet (Wilco).

Winnetka Community House makes birthday parties easy! We offer full service parties complete with entertainment, setup and clean up. Our party coordinator can help you plan your party and select from a variety of entertainers and activities including magic, dance, sports and more. Our parties will make your child’s birthday an event they’ll never forget!

CORNFLAKES

Cornflakes Summer Camp Cornflakes Staff

This unique outdoor-based camp offers a combination of creative activities and educational experiences for children ages 33 months through six years of age. Children are encouraged to explore their outdoor world through developmentally appropriate activities. The outdoor approach helps to increase each child’s awareness, enjoyment and respect for nature. Daily activities may include adventure walks down the Green Bay Trail, water play at Maple Beach and arts and crafts. Each week culminates with a special event. Campers attend a weekly ceramics lesson in our state of the art ceramics studio, take part in Spanish lessons and participate in a karate class. Counselors are college age or older. Children must be toilet trained by the first day of camp. Payment: 50% when registering; 50% by the first day of camp. Computer Explorers

Discover, create and learn, as TechStars grants access to a proprietary Minecraft MOD you can’t get on your own! Learn the fundamentals of computer networking through this Minecraft experience that also allows you and your friends to work in multiplayer mode as you mine, craft and build together to survive. Working with a partner you will use your skills to explore all the secrets the world has to offer including a mysterious castle filled with challenges. No matter whether you are new to Minecraft or already love the program, this camp is for you!

You will also learn how to make an Android phone come alive with your own apps! Working in teams, you will write your own voice recognition app, remote controller, compass, altimeter and much more. Some Android phones will be provided, but if you have one, bring it to test your app. When you finish the workshop, you will be able to take home your apps to continue development!

Chicago Bulls Basketball Schools

The Chicago Bulls Training Academy

This summer, learn from the best and let the Chicago Bulls teach you how to play like a champion! Since 1999, the Chicago Bulls have brought quality basketball camps to boys and girls throughout Chicagoland. More than 45,000 youth basketball players have developed essential basketball fundamentals including ball handling, passing, shooting, rebounding, individual moves, footwork and team concepts. We work on every part of your child’s game. Student to instructor ratio will be 10:1 or less. Each camper will receive a Chicago Bulls duffel bag, Bulls indoor/outdoor basketball, shirt, evaluation report and graduation certificate. During the camp each player will compete in the Bulls Skills Competition. At the end of the summer, the top three contestants will compete in the finals on the floor of the United Center (date to be decided).

Each camp participant, along with one guest, will be invited to the United Center, home of the Chicago Bulls, for a Q&A session with a Bulls personality and a current or former Bulls player!

The Rookie camp is a beginner camp focused on building fundamentals and fun drills to get the children to understand the game and improve their play.

British Soccer Camp Challenger Sports

British Soccer Camps provide young players of all abilities with the rare opportunity to receive high-level soccer coaching from a team of international expert’s right in the heart of their own community. Indoor Floor Hockey Hot Shots Sports

Hockey fundamentals as well as game strategy, teamwork, sportsmanship and safety will be stressed each week. “Game Time” Flag Football Hot Shots Sports Players will experience daily scrimmages with active instruction and tips from the coaching staff of Hot Shots Sports. Coaches will referee while emphasizing the fundamentals and game strategies of flag football. Players will be encouraged to employ skills used in football such as running pass routes, play calling, defensive positioning, the fundamentals of blocking and pass coverage. Premier level is the top level of classes for your young soccer star. Player’s develop a close familiarity with the ball and learn the importance of always having it under control. Being geared towards getting your child ready for future soccer experiences, the Premier level class tests players in a more challenging environment working on one-on-one and team exercises. By the end of class your child will learn landing on their shooting foot, precision shots vs. power shots, trapping the ball in the air and field awareness. Fencing Midwest Fencing Academy

The Olympic sport of fencing demands a blend of tactical and strategic thought and a physical execution of those decisions. This has led many to describe the sport as “physical chess.” Fencing also teaches balance and discipline and even more than this, it’s fun! This class is for those new to fencing or those who would like to work on the basic skills. This class will cover basic rules, etiquette, basic footwork, attacks and defenses. Mini-Majors Illinois Baseball Academy Staff

This unique clinic is a fun-filled way for boys and girls to learn the athletic fundamentals and life skills through the great game of baseball. While our focus always ties back to baseball, our curriculum will include:

Hot Shots Sports programs stress the pure enjoyment of being involved in athletics and offers the opportunity for children to develop their skills in an environment where everyone plays and reward is given for the effort rather than the result. Participants learn to have respect for each other on and off the court. Hot Shots Sports was founded in 1994 and continues to provide athletic programming in New York City, Denver and Chicago.

Illinois Baseball Academy employs some of the most accomplished and dynamic coaches on the North Shore, many with college and professional playing experience. Chris Beacom is the President of Illinois Baseball Academy. As a former New Trier head coach, Chris has been teaching children of all ages and ability levels how to play baseball for the past 20 years. Chris captained the Northwestern team and then played in the Toronto Blue Jays organization. All IBA instructors are trained in Illinois Baseball Academy methodology and share a commitment to making a positive impact on the players who come through our program.

MIDWEST FENCING ACADEMY

Hristo Etropolski is the head coach and owner of the Midwest Fencing Academy. During his career as a member of Bulgarian National Team he competed in the Olympic Games in 1980 and in 1988, placing fifth in 1980. He has won bronze and silver medals in different World Championships in both individual and team tournaments. During his best years as a competitor he won a number of World Cup tournaments and finished in the top eight in others. In 2005 he established Midwest Fencing Academy which quickly became one of the strongest saber clubs in the country.

With 10 years of experience running quality instructional youth basketball programs in the Chicagoland area, 3Point Athletics is excited to continue bringing its dedicated and engaging staff to Winnetka Community House.

MARTIAL ARTS

Participants are carefully initiated into this karate which focuses on alertness of mind, self-control and mental strategies to meet life challenges. Traditional Karate is a martial art which emphasizes the principles and applications of a weaponless self-defense through the use of total body dynamics and mental discipline. Students will constantly strive for technical excellence and enhancement of ones character. The following items are optional and will incur additional costs: uniforms, belt tests and tournaments.

Frank Chrzanowski, chief instructor, developed the traditional Karate program for Winnetka Community House in 1989. He has trained in Karate since 1975 and has attained the rank of fourth degree black belt in the Japan Karate Association. He has been featured in articles in the Chicago Tribune, the Sun Times and the Pioneer Press, and has appeared on a number of local and national television programs. Ron Stein has trained in Karate since 1981. His karate experience extends to Europe and Japan, where he lived for four years, training under many instructors and studying various Japanese martial arts. He has been with Winnetka Community House Karate program since 1994.

Master Hoon Lee has practiced martial arts for over 45 years. His training includes Hapkido, Hwarangdo, Kendo, Tai Chi, Judo and Aikido. Prior to establishing Lee’s Tai Chi Hapkido Kendo School in 1999, Master Lee taught martial arts at Kansas State University, YMCAs in the Chicago metropolitan area, the Northern Suburban Chinese School, Andersen Consulting and Baxter Healthcare International.

TAI CHI Master Hoon Lee

Tai Chi is a low-impact martial art developed to improve circulation, tone muscles, increase flexibility, improve posture, enhance balance and induce relaxation. Often Tai Chi is studied for its health benefits but this art also has practical and calming benefits for daily life as well. Tai Chi is used by martial arts practitioners to enhance the study of the other art forms.

Tai Chi class on Tuesdays covers cultivation of mind, body and spirit by performing a series of Tai Chi and Qi Gong movements and postures as a synchronized group meditation. Qi Gong is the Chinese philosophy and practice of aligning breath, physical activity and awareness for mental, spiritual and physical health.

Tai Chi class on Thursdays covers principle and advance techniques of Yang style Tai Chi. In this class students study the traditional forms in depth and also learn meditation, partner sensitivity training and utilize the sword, knife, staff, fan and Qi Gong practices.

TAEKWONDO

Taekwondo is a 2000 year old martial art offering a variety of benefits for people of all ages and physical abilities. Meet Our CERAMICS Instructors

Jill Hurwitz has been throwing pots since 1973 and teaching ceramics since 1994. While earning her B.A. from Skidmore College in New York, she spent all her spare time in the pottery studio. Jill has a Master’s Degree in Teaching from the School for International Training in Vermont. After college, Jill studied pottery in Vermont, at Lill Street Studios in Chicago, at the Evanston Arts Center and the Park District in Highland Park.

Debra Sampson received a BFA from Washington University in St. Louis. She has continued her study of ceramics with various instructors and workshops in the Chicago area. Currently, she exhibits and sells her work in three galleries though The Illinois Artisans Program and also in various local fairs under the name DKS Pottery.

Jenifer Thoem has been sculpting in clay and teaching for over 20 years. A native Georgian, she received a BFA in Ceramics from Georgia Southern University in 1994. She moved to Wilmette from Richmond, VA where she owned and operated The Creative Foundry, a ceramics production/teaching studio. Jenifer has experience teaching handbuilding, wheel and mixed media sculpture classes in both public and private schools, and community recreation ceramic centers in both Georgia and Virginia. Jenifer’s whimsical clay and found object sculptures can be found in many private collections around the United States.

This very popular camp incorporates imagination, movement, pantomime, music, dance and enchanting costumes to make for a wonderful summer experience. Each week we will explore a theme, learn basic ballet, improve motor skills, complete an arts and craft project and enjoy a yummy snack. Boys are welcome. Beginner Pilates Nicole Betts

The Pilates Method is a classic method of physical and mental conditioning created over 80 years ago by legendary physical trainer Joseph Pilates. Through exercises that focus on the application of six principles: control, centering, concentration, precis ion, breath and flow, we teach you about the mechanics of movement, allowing you to develop and maintain a healthy and graceful body. Nicole S. Betts has been studying Pilates since 1996 and was certified in New York City through Romana’s Pilates in 2004. The mission of Romana’s Pilates is to keep the integrity of the original Pilates method as Joseph intended. Nicole has studied with master teachers Romana Kryzanowska (Joseph Pilate protege) Sari Mejia Santo, and Chicago’s own Juanita Lopez. Nicole received a BFA in dance from Barat College’s Conservatory of Dance and has gone on to perform with Cerqua Rivera Dance Theater, Chicago Opera Theater, apprenticed with River North Dance Company and toured Europe with LaTour Productions. Puppy Creative Paws

Creative Paws uses positive reinforcement training methods to improve the relationship between dog and handler by providing an effective means of communication and understanding as the foundation for learning. We believe that training your dog should be enjoyable for you and your dog! Creative Paws, Inc. was founded in 2001 by Ashlee Trotter, BS, CPDT-KA, and provides group classes and private lessons for dog obedience training and behavior problems. Ashlee holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology from Michigan State University. Prior to pursuing her dog training interests she honed her skills of positive reinforcement training while working with zoo animals at facilities in the Midwest. She has been recognized for several years as a Canine Good Citizen evaluator by the American Kennel Club, as well as a Certified Pet Dog Trainer (CPDT-KA) by the Certification Council for Pet Dog Trainers, an affiliate organization of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers and the first organization to offer a national standard for trainer certification.

Ashlee’s competition dog Spirit is the American Kennel Club’s (AKC) number one ranked German Wirehaired Pointer in agility for 2008–2012. He is the second of his breed to earn an AKC Master Agility Championship title, as well as the only German Wirehaired Pointer to reach the finals of an AKC National Agility event, a feat Ashlee has handled him to accomplish twice. Puppy Class is designed to provide a positive environment for socialization of puppies to a variety of people as well as dogs. Early socialization has been shown to greatly reduce the incidence of both human and dog directed aggression, as well as anxiety and fear based behavior problems. Other topics discussed include house training, mouthing, leadership, sitting and recall. This class is appropriate for puppies ages 2–4 months old. Obedience 102 Creative Paws

Obedience 102 is focused on honing the skills of Obedience 101. Additional levels of difficulty and distractions will be added. Rally Creative Paws

Rally is a fun spin on traditional obedience for both the dog and the handler. Rally is a sport in which all dogs are encouraged to participate. Purebred or mixed breed, every dog can learn the fundamentals for Rally. Dogs must have strong heeling skills to take this course. In rally an enthusiastic attitude and wagging tail are as important as precision. In fact, handlers are not only allowed to, but encouraged to positively reinforce their dogs during the competition with verbal praise, petting and even food rewards! Dogs and handlers should both appear to be enjoying the work and each other’s company.

Tricks & Intro to Clicker Creative Paws

DOG OBEDIENCE

Michael “The Dog Guru” Jayko With 25 years of dog training experience, Michael has witnessed and worked with almost every aspect in the field of dog behavior including competition obedience, agility, tracking, scent discrimination, police dogs, behavior modification, diabetic alert dogs and guide dog training. With a Bachelor’s Degree in the Applied Behavioral Sciences, Michael combines human and dog psyches to create a successful bond between the dog and its handler.

As an instructor with Guide Dogs for the Blind, Michael was involved with the training of Roselle, a yellow lab, who successfully traversed 78 flights to guide her handler to safety during the chaos of 9/11. As a member of the APDT, CPDT and NADRA, a certified Canine Good Citizen instructor, and a mentor for Animal Behavior College, Michael works with all breeds and issues.

You can often see Michael biking or roller blading with a dog or walking a large pack through the neighborhoods of the 60093 zip code. As a member of the Winnetka-Northfield community Michael also gives dog safety talks to schools as well as Boy and Girl Scout troops.

Puppy Class Michael “The Dog Guru” Jayko 8 weeks–6 months. Learn how to help transition your dog from being a sweet puppy to the faithful dog you’ve always wanted. This class will teach you the reasoning behind a puppy’s thought process as well as the prevention of and response to unwanted behavior. You will learn the techniques of using body language to communicate to your puppy what is acceptable and what is not. Other essential puppy how-tos will be provided such as basic grooming, simple, commands and vet visits. Teaching your puppy should not be time-consuming or painful. This class will teach you the best ways to train your dog while still living your life. Beginning the socialization process during puppyhood ensures that your dog will more likely grow to be well adjusted and highly adaptable to other dogs, people and situations.

Founded in 1924, the North Shore Art League is a non-profit organization offering art classes for adults and children. Membership Information

Early registration: Members are eligible to register for all classes one week prior to the start of seasonal registration. Early registration can be done via the web at winnetkacommunityhouse.org, fax or in person at Winnetka Community House. Please note: early registration does not guarantee a spot in a class.

All family members in your household are eligible for membership benefits. When registering for membership, just list your family members, and they will be included for the program registration benefits automatically when registering for classes.

Members receive a notice about one month prior to the expiration, so the membership can be renewed for the next year.

Refunds for memberships will not be available.

How To Register

To register for a membership simply list all eligible members on the registration form. Then check the box and add the membership fee in with your registration.

Credit Cards

You may use your credit card for all programs which appear with a class number or for a Fitness Centre membership. Fitness Centre memberships are obtained at the Fitness Centre only. Be sure to fill out the credit card information completely and sign the form. We do not take telephone registration. However, if you are paying by credit card, you may fax your registration to (847) 446-0609.

Cancellation of Classes

Prior to any class, registration is reviewed to determine if the enrollment is sufficient to hold the class. Register early! Do not wait until the day of the first class to register. You may find the class has been cancelled due to low enrollment.

Refund Policy

Full refunds will be issued for courses that are cancelled by Winnetka Community House due to insufficient registration. A refund, less a 10% service charge (not to exceed $25), may be granted if the refund request is received five full working days prior to the start of the program. No refunds will be allowed after this time unless a medical condition develops and a written explanation from a physician on his/her letterhead is presented. Due to advanced reservation requirements, no refunds for trips, outings or special events will be given.

Prorated Policy

Classes may be prorated if you would like to enroll in a class after it has started, provided the instructor has space and allows for late registration. The supervisor must approve the prorated amount.

Inclement Weather

Winnetka Community House will not hold classes on days when the Winnetka Public Schools have cancelled classes due to inclement weather.

Religious Holidays

Winnetka Community House makes every effort to avoid scheduling programs or events on religious holidays. Anyone affected will be offered the option of attending a session of the same program on a different date as a make-up, or receiving a prorated refund of the series fee for the date missed.

• Winnetka Community House is not responsible for the supervision of children on site prior to or remaining on site after the established program times.

• Winnetka Community House is handicapped accessible.

• If you or any member of your family has special needs, please see our Executive Director.

Winnetka Community House receives no tax dollars. We are supported by our programs, fund raising events, our annual campaign, and donations.

• Winnetka Community House assumes no responsibility and carries no accident or medical insurance for injuries or accidents at programs or activities on Community House property. It is advisable to review your own personal health insurance plan to be certain that you and your family have proper and sufficient insurance coverage.

Brochure Errors

Complete details of program policies, procedures, and guidelines are sometimes inadvertently omitted. Errors in days, times, registration requirements and fees may occur in the brochure. Winnetka Community House has established the Stephen Dustman Memorial Scholarship Fund to any resident who would like to take part in a Winnetka Community House activity, but is unable to render full payment. Winnetka Community House is committed to conducting its recreation programs and activities in the safest manner possible, and holds the safety of the participants in the highest possible regard. Participants and parents registering their child in recreation programs must recognize, however, that there is an inherent risk of injury when choosing to participate in recreation activities.
