Cornflakes Summer Camp Cornflakes Staff

This unique outdoor-based camp offers a combination of creative activities and educational experiences for children ages 33 months through six years of age. Children are encouraged to explore their outdoor world through developmentally appropriate activities. The outdoor approach helps to increase each child’s awareness, enjoyment and respect for nature. Daily activities may include adventure walks down the Green Bay Trail, water play at Maple Beach and arts and crafts. Each week culminates with a special event. Campers attend a weekly ceramics lesson in our state of the art ceramics studio, take part in Spanish lessons and participate in a karate class. Counselors are college age or older. Children must be toilet trained by the first day of camp. Payment: 50% when registering; 50% by the first day of camp. Junior Counselor Program

This Camp is for students entering grades 7–9 in the fall. This camp is a combination of classroom time and practical job experience. The Jr. Counselors will be trained in CPR and AED. This camp will concentrate on leadership skills necessary to be a successful counselor. All participants will be placed within our Cornflakes Camp. Participants must be able to attend the entire session.

Technology Experience Camp Technology Experience Camp

Experience is the best teacher. Students will play with science and technology-themed toys to gain a first-hand understanding of a variety of science principles. They will build, explore and create which will help students grasp concepts related to electronics, microchips, detectors, sound, robots and machines.

Module 2: Build, Tinker, Discover

Learn how to build your own thumb-sized wearable computers and interactive toys that can be programmed to do amazing things. Students will build chip micro-computers with peripheral sensors, detectors and sensors. Examples: Build your own room intrusion alarm, a “smart” stuffed animal that responds to hugs or a custom holiday light display The possibilities are endless!

Want to try your hand at making your own book or short story? Design your own story and publish your work. Minecraft/Mobile App Camp

Computer Explorers

Discover, create and learn, as TechStars grants access to a proprietary Minecraft MOD you can’t get on your own! Learn the fundamentals of computer networking through this Minecraft experience that also allows you and your friends to work in multiplayer mode as you mine, craft and build together to survive. Working with a partner you will use your skills to explore all the secrets the world has to offer including a mysterious castle filled with challenges. No matter whether you are new to Minecraft or already love the program, this camp is for you!

You will also learn how to make an Android phone come alive with your own apps! Working in teams, you will write your own voice recognition app, remote controller, compass, altimeter and much more. Some Android phones will be provided, but if you have one, bring it to test your app. When you finish the workshop, you will be able to take home your apps to continue development!

Jr Fun Gineering and Video game programming

Computer Explorers

Young engineers will use LEGO simple machine kits to learn about structures and forces, levers, wheels and axles. Working in pairs you will learn what engineers do by building working models of vehicles, cranes and other fun projects. Create your own interactive games, puzzles and quizzes in this cool class. You and a partner will customize your game designs and add challenges and levels of difficulty. Then you will share them with the class. Please bring a snack and peanut-free lunch every day.

Summer Explorers Tiny Treks

Tiny Treks is an innovative program for families who want to teach their children about the world through exploration of their natural surroundings. We believe children learn best through hands-on experiences which build self-esteem and encourage a love of nature. In this class activities will include short, stimulating hikes in a variety of outdoor settings, music, art projects and games.

Camp Amigos Amigos Program

Everyday will be a special day at Camp Amigos. We will laugh, play, create, sing, paint, cook and discover great wonders. Best of all, we will do it all while learning Spanish! Camp Amigos uses a highly controlled vocabulary introduced in conjunction with fun theme days. All instructors are experienced in early childhood and at least one instructor is a native speaker.

Chess Wizards Camp Chess Wizards

Would you like to go on a journey to learn cool openings, mid-games with all the pins, double attacks, endgames and even bughouse? Would you like to be a part of a successful chess team, designed to cater to all levels of chess players? If so, join Chess Wizards for this summer camp! Campers will learn how to play chess in a fun atmosphere, with both indoor and outdoor activities. This camp is for beginning and intermediate level players. No previous experience is needed! Campers should bring their own lunch and a drink. Snacks will be provided. All campers will receive a chessboard, a Chess Wizards t-shirt, scorebook, trophy, work folder and certificate of achievement!

Chicago Bulls Basketball Schools

The Chicago Bulls Training Academy

This summer, learn from the best and let the Chicago Bulls teach you how to play like a champion! Since 1999, the Chicago Bulls have brought quality basketball camps to boys and girls throughout Chicagoland. More than 45,000 youth basketball players have developed essential basketball fundamentals including ball handling, passing, shooting, rebounding, individual moves, footwork and team concepts. We work on every part of your child’s game. Student to instructor ratio will be 10:1 or less. Each camper will receive a Chicago Bulls duffel bag, Bulls indoor/outdoor basketball, shirt, evaluation report and graduation certificate. During the camp each player will compete in the Bulls Skills Competition. At the end of the summer, the top three contestants will compete in the finals on the floor of the United Center (date to be decided).

Each camp participant, along with one guest, will be invited to the United Center, home of the Chicago Bulls, for a Q&A session with a Bulls personality and a current or former Bulls player!

Rookie

The Rookie camp is a beginner camp focused on building fundamentals and fun drills to get the children to understand the game and improve their play.

British Soccer Camp Challenger Sports

British Soccer Camps provide young players of all abilities with the rare opportunity to receive high-level soccer coaching from a team of international expert’s right in the heart of their own community. Campers will be exposed to individual foot skills, technical drills, tactical practices, small-sided games and scrimmages. Soccer skills are coached within a framework of character development based on respect, responsibility, integrity, leadership and sportsmanship. We offer a cultural education too! Our ever-popular Camp World Cup Tournament allows us to introduce players to the geography, traditions and culture of other great soccer-playing countries. Amazing coaches, awesome accents and cultural ingredients combine for a oneof-a-kind camp experience. Each camper will receive a t-shirt, soccer ball, giant fold-out poster and a personal player evaluation.

Join us for our annual summer camp where kids participate in a stimulating and competitive environment. Focus will be on helping kids with teamwork and fundamentals while playing a variety of sports throughout the week. REGISTRATION INFORMATION

Member registration opens March 17, 2014 and will be processed on a first come, first served basis.

Membership does not guarantee placement in a class.

All non-members will be able to register March 24, 2014.

Registration received through the mail, fax, or in person will be processed by 5:00 p.m. the next business day. The best way to ensure that your registration is processed immediately is by using our online registration at winnetkacommunityhouse.org

Membership Information

Early registration: Members are eligible to register for all classes one week prior to the start of seasonal registration. Early registration can be done via the web at winnetkacommunityhouse.org, fax or in person at Winnetka Community House. Please note: early registration does not guarantee a spot in a class.

All family members in your household are eligible for membership benefits. When registering for membership, just list your family members, and they will be included for the program registration benefits automatically when registering for classes.

Members receive a notice about one month prior to the expiration, so the membership can be renewed for the next year.

Refunds for memberships will not be available.

How To Register

To register for a membership simply list all eligible members on the registration form. Then check the box and add the membership fee in with your registration.

• By listing your email address, you agree to receive email communications from Winnetka Community House. We will never sell your address, but love to keep in touch with our users to give news about programs, events, and special offers from Winnetka Community House. • Sign the registration form.

• Unsigned forms will not be processed, but will be returned to you. This will delay processing your registration.

• Registration forms may be mailed or faxed. Registration by telephone is not accepted.

Credit Cards

You may use your credit card for all programs which appear with a class number or for a Fitness Centre membership. Fitness Centre memberships are obtained at the Fitness Centre only. Be sure to fill out the credit card information completely and sign the form. We do not take telephone registration. However, if you are paying by credit card, you may fax your registration to (847) 446-0609.

Cancellation of Classes

Prior to any class, registration is reviewed to determine if the enrollment is sufficient to hold the class. Register early! Do not wait until the day of the first class to register. You may find the class has been cancelled due to low enrollment.

Refund Policy

Full refunds will be issued for courses that are cancelled by Winnetka Community House due to insufficient registration. A refund, less a 10% service charge (not to exceed $25), may be granted if the refund request is received five full working days prior to the start of the program. No refunds will be allowed after this time unless a medical condition develops and a written explanation from a physician on his/her letterhead is presented. Due to advanced reservation requirements, no refunds for trips, outings or special events will be given.

Prorated Policy

Classes may be prorated if you would like to enroll in a class after it has started, provided the instructor has space and allows for late registration. The supervisor must approve the prorated amount.

Inclement Weather

Winnetka Community House will not hold classes on days when the Winnetka Public Schools have cancelled classes due to inclement weather.

Religious Holidays

Winnetka Community House makes every effort to avoid scheduling programs or events on religious holidays. Anyone affected will be offered the option of attending a session of the same program on a different date as a make-up, or receiving a prorated refund of the series fee for the date missed.

• Winnetka Community House is not responsible for the supervision of children on site prior to or remaining on site after the established program times.

• Winnetka Community House is handicapped accessible.

• If you or any member of your family has special needs, please see our Executive Director.

Winnetka Community House receives no tax dollars. We are supported by our programs, fund raising events, our annual campaign, and donations.

• Winnetka Community House assumes no responsibility and carries no accident or medical insurance for injuries or accidents at programs or activities on Community House property. It is advisable to review your own personal health insurance plan to be certain that you and your family have proper and sufficient insurance coverage.

Brochure Errors

Complete details of program policies, procedures, and guidelines are sometimes inadvertently omitted. Errors in days, times, registration requirements and fees may occur in the brochure. When such errors occur the staff will advise you of the change as quickly as possible. We thank you for your understanding.

STEPHEN DUSTMAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Winnetka Community House has established the Stephen Dustman Memorial Scholarship Fund to any resident who would like to take part in a Winnetka Community House activity, but is unable to render full payment. Persons interested may submit their need in writing to the attention of the Executive Director for confidential review. If further information is desired, please call our main office. Donations to this scholarship fund are gratefully accepted.

Winnetka Community House is committed to conducting its recreation programs and activities in the safest manner possible, and holds the safety of the participants in the highest possible regard. Participants and parents registering their child in recreation programs must recognize, however, that there is an inherent risk of injury when choosing to participate in recreation activities. Winnetka Community House continually strives to reduce such risks, and insists that all participants follow safety rules and instructions which have been designed to protect the participants’ safety. Please recognize that Winnetka Community House does not carry medical accident insurance for injuries sustained in its programs. The cost of such would make program fees prohibitive.
