DOG OBEDIENCE

Puppy Class is designed to provide a positive environment for socialization of puppies to a wide variety of people as well as to each other. Early socialization has been shown to greatly reduce the incidence of both human and dog directed aggression, as well as anxiety and fear based behavior problems. Additional topics will be discussed such as addressing the common puppy issues of house training, mouthing, leadership and preventing behavior problems. Puppies will also learn to sit and begin recall training (coming when called). This class is appropriate for puppies ages two–four months old. Dogs must have received at least two rounds of vaccinations prior to attending. If your dog has not yet received the second round, please plan to attend class without your puppy until the second round of vaccination has been administered.

Obedience 101 teaches the basics of obedience including sit, down, stand, recall (coming when called), stay and heel–everything your companion dog needs to know! Both verbal commands and hand signals will be used. Dogs of any age may take this class. Positive reinforcement techniques will be used, so please bring food rewards or a small toy with you to class.

Obedience 102 is focused on honing the skills of Obedience 101. Additional levels of difficulty and distractions will be added. Dogs of any age may enroll provided they have a basic knowledge of basic obedience commands: sit, down, recall (coming when called), stay and heel.

Creative Paws

Creative Paws uses positive reinforcement training methods to improve the relationship between dog and handler by providing an effective means of communication and understanding as the foundation for learning. We believe that training your dog should be enjoyable for both you and your dog!

Creative Paws, Inc. was founded in 2001 by Ashlee Trotter, BS, CPDT-KA, and provides group classes and private lessons for dog obedience training and behavior problems. Ashlee holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology from Michigan State University. Prior to pursuing her dog training interests she honed her skills of positive reinforcement training while working with zoo animals at facilities in the Midwest. She has been recognized for several years as a Canine Good Citizen evaluator by the American Kennel Club, as well as a Certified Pet Dog Trainer (CPDT-KA) by the Certification Council for Pet Dog Trainers, an affiliate organization of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers and the first organization to offer a national standard for trainer certification.

Ashlee’s competition dog Spirit is the American Kennel Club’s (AKC) number one ranked German Wirehaired Pointer in agility for 2008–2012. He is the second of his breed to earn an AKC Master Agility Championship title, as well as the only German Wirehaired Pointer to reach the finals of an AKC National Agility event, a feat Ashlee has handled him to accomplish twice. Aside from agility he is titled in traditional obedience, rally obedience, tracking, hunting and dock diving for a combined total of 26 titles and counting.

Creek is Ashlee’s future competition dog. He is also a German Wirehaired Pointer and is currently training for agility, traditional obedience and rally obedience. He has lofty goals to live up to the achievements of his predecessor, Spirit.

Puppy Class

Michael “The Dog Guru” Jayko For dogs aged eight weeks–six months. Learn how to help transition your dog from being a sweet puppy to the faithful dog you have always wanted. This class will teach you the reasoning behind a puppy’s thought process as well as the prevention of and response to unwanted behavior. You will learn the techniques of using body language to communicate to your puppy what is and is not acceptable. Other essential how-tos will be provided such as basic grooming, simple, commands and vet visits.

Teaching your puppy should not be timeconsuming or painful, this class will teach you the best ways to train your dog while still living your life. Beginning the socialization process during puppyhood ensures that your dog will more likely grow to be well adjusted and highly adaptable to other dogs, people, and situations.

Michael “The Dog Guru” Jayko

With 25 years of dog training experience, Michael has witnessed and worked with almost every aspect in the field of dog behavior including competition obedience, agility, tracking, scent discrimination, police dogs, behavior modification, diabetic alert dogs and guide dog training. With a Bachelor’s Degree in the Applied Behavioral Sciences, Michael combines human and dog psyches to create a successful bond between dog and handler.

As an instructor with Guide Dogs for the Blind, Michael was involved with the training of Roselle, a yellow lab, who successfully traversed 78 flights to guide her handler to

You may have heard the expression “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.” This class will show you that there is always hope of teaching your dog new tricks, it just requires forming some new habits. Learn the basic commands of sit, down, stay, heel and come. Solve some of the common issues or problems that you have with your dog. This class will teach you how to effectively train your dog while maintaining your lifestyle. If you begin to think like your dog and understand the proper communication, your dog will eventually become an extension of you.

safety during the chaos of 9/11. As a member of the APDT, CPDT and NADRA, a certified Canine Good Citizen instructor, and a mentor for Animal Behavior College, Michael works with all breeds and issues.

You can often see Michael biking or rollerblading with a dog or walking a large pack through the neighborhoods of the 60093 zip code. As a member of the Winnetka-Northfield community Michael also gives dog safety talks to local schools as well as Boy and Girl Scout troops.

Agility Class

Michael “The Dog Guru” Jayko For dogs of all ages that are well behaved off-leash.

This class is mainly for fun and exercise with your dog. Mellow out your high-energy dog on walks with the extra workout techniques. Agility training can also help the more insecure dogs build confidence through learning how to overcome things that might seem scary (obstacles, jumps, etc.). Not only is this class a great form of physical activity but it also builds trust between you and your dog as you are there to assure them through obstacles. Almost everything taught in the agility class can be easily translated to your daily walks.

This show is a very interactive blend of kid friendly magic with music, games and contests. The show starts off with a 15–20 minute child-friendly magical performance including many opportunities for the children to help with the tricks. After the magic show our performer will lead guests in games, age appropriate music, television trivia and many fun dances to great music.

GRAFFITI PAINTING

Have fun painting on a canvas to create your own graffiti masterpiece using stencils, tape resist, stamping, dripping and brushing. At the end of this party children will have a colorful and exciting piece of art that is ready to take home and hang on the wall. One hour of instruction, paint and painting supplies are included in the cost. Blank canvases are additional. Dress for a mess or bring a smock.

TREASURE BOXES

Guests use a variety of materials such as cloth, buttons, foam, ribbons, letters, stamps and markers to decorate the inside and outside of your own unique keepsake box. They then create a surprise with beading or modeling clay that will have a special place inside the box.

CLAY ANIMALS

Using multi-color modeling clay, we will create tiny animals along with their habitats or nests. These fanciful creations can be taken home at the end of the party and will air dry within 24 hours.

REGISTRATION INFORMATION

Member registration opens March 11, 2013 and will be processed on a first come, first served basis.

Membership does not guarantee placement in a class.

All non-members will be able to register March 18, 2013.

Registration received through the mail, fax, or in person will be processed by 5:00 p.m. the next business day. The best way to ensure that your registration is processed immediately is by using our online registration at winnetkacommunityhouse.org

Membership Information

Early registration: Members are eligible to register for all classes one week prior to the start of seasonal registration. Early registration can be done via the web at winnetkacommunityhouse.org, fax or in person at Winnetka Community House. Please note: early registration does not guarantee a spot in a class.

All family members in your household are eligible for membership benefits. When registering for membership, just list your family members, and they will be included for the program registration benefits automatically when registering for classes.

Members receive a notice about one month prior to the expiration, so the membership can be renewed for the next year.

Refunds for memberships will not be available.

How To Register

To register for a membership simply list all eligible members on the registration form. Then check the box and add the membership fee in with your registration.

• Read and fill out form completely.

• By listing your email address, you agree to receive email communications from Winnetka Community House. We will never sell your address, but love to keep in touch with our users to give news about programs, events, and special offers from Winnetka Community House. If you do not wish to receive these emails, please unsubscribe.

• Sign the registration form.

• Unsigned forms will not be processed, but will be returned to you. This will delay processing your registration.

• Registration forms may be mailed or faxed. Registration by telephone is not accepted.

Credit Cards

You may use your credit card for all programs which appear with a class number or for a Fitness Centre membership. Fitness Centre memberships are obtained at the Fitness Centre only. Be sure to fill out the credit card information completely and sign the form. We do not take telephone registration. However, if you are paying by credit card, you may fax your registration to (847) 446-0609.

Cancellation of Classes

Prior to any class, registration is reviewed to determine if the enrollment is sufficient to hold the class. Register early! Do not wait until the day of the first class to register. You may find the class has been cancelled due to low enrollment.

Refund Policy

Full refunds will be issued for courses that are cancelled by Winnetka Community House due to insufficient registration. A refund, less a 10% service charge (not to exceed $25), may be granted if the refund request is received five full working days prior to the start of the program. No refunds will be allowed after this time unless a medical condition develops and a written explanation from a physician on his/her letterhead is presented. Due to advanced reservation requirements, no refunds for trips, outings or special events will be given.

Prorated Policy

Classes may be prorated if you would like to enroll in a class after it has started, provided the instructor has space and allows for late registration. The supervisor must approve the prorated amount.

Inclement Weather

Winnetka Community House will not hold classes on days when the Winnetka Public Schools have cancelled classes due to inclement weather.

Religious Holidays

Winnetka Community House makes every effort to avoid scheduling programs or events on religious holidays. Anyone affected will be offered the option of attending a session of the same program on a different date as a make-up, or receiving a prorated refund of the series fee for the date missed.

• Winnetka Community House is not responsible for the supervision of children on site prior to or remaining on site after the established program times.

• Winnetka Community House is handicapped accessible.

• If you or any member of your family has special needs, please see our Executive Director.

Winnetka Community House receives no tax dollars. We are supported by our programs, fund raising events, our annual campaign, and donations.

• Winnetka Community House assumes no responsibility and carries no accident or medical insurance for injuries or accidents at programs or activities on Community House property. It is advisable to review your own personal health insurance plan to be certain that you and your family have proper and sufficient insurance coverage.

Brochure Errors

Complete details of program policies, procedures, and guidelines are sometimes inadvertently omitted. Errors in days, times, registration requirements and fees may occur in the brochure. When such errors occur the staff will advise you of the change as quickly as possible. We thank you for your understanding.

STEPHEN DUSTMAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Winnetka Community House has established the Stephen Dustman Memorial Scholarship Fund to any resident who would like to take part in a Winnetka Community House activity, but is unable to render full payment. Persons interested may submit their need in writing to the attention of the Executive Director for confidential review. If further information is desired, please call our main office.

Winnetka Community House is committed to conducting its recreation programs and activities in the safest manner possible, and holds the safety of the participants in the highest possible regard. Participants and parents registering their child in recreation programs must recognize, however, that there is an inherent risk of injury when choosing to participate in recreation activities. Winnetka Community House continually strives to reduce such risks, and insists that all participants follow safety rules and instructions which have been designed to protect the participants’ safety. Please recognize that Winnetka Community House does not carry medical accident insurance for injuries sustained in its programs. The cost of such would make program fees prohibitive. Therefore, each person registering himself\herself or a family member for a recreation program/activity should review his/her own health insurance policy for coverage. It must be noted that the absence of health insurance coverage does not make Winnetka Community House automatically responsible for payment of medical expenses.
