Ranch Hand Rodeo a gathering place for friends and family
W
innemucca, Nevada’s Ranch Hand Rodeo Weekend is the largest of its kind. Filling our hometown with people from across the West, this event provides Winnemucca a time to shine. The folks who come to this one know it’s about real life, real ranching and real satisfaction for a job well done. It’s about stretching our legs after a long cold winter, looking forward to green grass and sunshine. Ranch Hand Rodeo has become part of our culture, part of the celebrated traditions of the Great Basin. Thirty-six years ago, three ranching brothers decided to kick off a little friendly competition between neighbors by hosting the first annual Ranch Hand Rodeo in Winnemucca. For Tim, Hank, and Dan Dufurrena, the idea was to draw together teams who would go head to head in saddle bronc riding, cow mugging, calf roping, team branding, team roping, and ranch doctoring. Today’s event also includes the ever-popular trailer loading and women’s steer stopping. The Humboldt County Agricultural District No. 3 is committed to preserving the heritage and lifestyle of the working ranch cowboy. From February 26 – March 2, Winnemucca, Nevada will swell as the 36th annual Winnemucca Ranch Hand Rodeo Weekend is held at the Winnemucca Event Center. Continued on Page 23
