Hearts of Oak

We probably all remember visiting a house that made us think ‘ah yes, what a lovely place’ - but putting your finger on the source of that feeling is complex - and it is not just about the actual bricks and mortar.

Arriving somewhere could be about a winding tree-lined avenue, or about pushing through a lovely old gate, threading a path through scented chamomile, jasmine or rosemary - many permutations are possible, but they all share something about an adjustment to a new mood, stepping out of work mode and into ‘home’ mode - or into ‘party’ mode - or any number of modes - country/town, thrilling/relaxing… the key is that the ambiance shifts.

So how is this achieved, without going the whole tree-lined avenue?

Scent, as mentioned, can help, a few good plants, a transition of textures, perhaps some old flagstones laid amongst the chamomile or thyme, or for the modernist, some basalt tiles, smartly offsetting some multi-stem shrubs, more architectural in style.

You can add interest, especially if you are trying to keep the gardening hours to a minimum, by a clever choice of furniture or sculpture. Indeed, good furniture can be part-sculpture, because, if you choose well, it becomes part of the design intent, drawing the

eye, giving a point of focus. If your property is linear in character, then choose simple forms - a backless bench, for example. For a more traditional house or garden, something that speaks of craft and timelessness would be right.

Just like inside the house, everything you touch matters. The satisfaction of pushing open a good, substantial front door, the pleasure of well-made door handles or loveliness of a fine handrail on the stairs, so the same applies outside - out with woven plastic, in with good materials and craftsmanship. Just like for interiors, it is worth investing in quality if you want to optimise your valuation potential.

It should not only look good, though - the furniture on the terrace or in the garden should positively beckon! ‘Come, take a seat!’ it should say, and, on obeying the call, you should feel instantly comfortable, embraced. An oak seat or dining chair feels so nice to the touch - warm in winter, cool in summer, with an organic texture and timeless quality that lifts the spirits and induces instant stress-release. Comfort is key - otherwise, why bother?

Gaze Burvill is established as the highest quality standard of outdoor furniture and kitchens. The company, with certified ‘B-Corp’ status, campaigns for excellence in British

forestry, using only British-sourced oak for its more affordable National Trust Collection, and takes great pride in correct wood selection, grain orientation and superb craftsmanship, to make sure the furniture (and outdoor kitchen cabinetry) can be enjoyed for decades. Choose from oak sofas, poolside recliners, benches and dining sets, all beautifully craftsman-made in East Tisted, Hampshire.

Gaze Burvill selects its oak from sustainable and certified sources, and uses specific cuts of the wood, not only to ensure its stability over the years, but to reveal the handsome grain patterns, unique to oak, and, as it seasons and silvers over time, these patterns will catch the light and delight the eye. And for maintenance? A good clean is recommended, with a natural bristle brush after every winter, especially the first winter, and an oil can be applied every couple of years from about year three. There is no need for oiling before this - oak is naturally durable and impermeable (ie waterproof), and full of natural tannins, which keep bugs and bacteria at bay.

Warm days are around the corner, so embrace the all-important ambiance shift, and make sure there is a comfortable, inviting place to be outside.

HARLEQUIN STUDIO

NEW IN: ZAMORA

Harlequin is a contemporary brand of creative integrity known for designing and making versatile, sophisticated, and expressive fabric and wallpaper. As a studio, Harlequin embraces an eclectic sense of style in interiors and empowers people to express their individuality through colour and design in their homes. Founded in the 1960s, Harlequin’s portfolio is a varied and exciting mix of techniques, artistic styles, and textures, culminating in a library of beautiful, transitional designs. From a considered yet versatile library of hues to exceptional techniques and finishes in products, Harlequin’s designs bring energy to interiors, building an artwork archive for the future.

Zamora is a brand-new fabric and wallpaper collection by Harlequin that explores a fusion of global cultures, including embroideries and woven fabrics, demonstrating various weaving techniques. By mixing archival pieces and modern artistic paintings this collection tells a range of design stories within the contemporary interior, fulfilling our deep passion for bringing the outside world in. One such story is that of Kantha, a beautiful Indian style embroidery fabric.

When designing Kantha, Harlequin’s design studio began with an archival kantha textile they’d acquired. Kantha is a centuries-old embroidery practice from the Bengal region, now divided between Bangladesh and West Bengal in India, where layers of cloth were bound with running stitch and brought to life with narrative motifs drawn from nature and everyday life. Kantha was mostly crafted by women who used these textiles to tell stories through cloth.

The original archival piece features a geometric sun or lotus leaf at its centre, a motif typical of the Kantha tradition, but what the designers were especially drawn to was its corners and edges, replete with peacocks, elephants, plants, fish, and tigers. In reimagining this design, the designers brought these motifs to the centre of focus, arranged linearly and embroidered as vignettes, each with their own story and personality, while a running stitch threads across the background.

BRINGING NATURE HOME: HOW EVERY GARDEN CAN SUPPORT BIODIVERSITY

Across the UK, gardens collectively form one of the country’s most important wildlife habitats. In fact, the total area of domestic gardens is estimated to be larger than all of the nation’s National Nature Reserves combined. While individual gardens may seem small, together they create an extraordinary network of green spaces that can support thousands of species.

As a garden designer, this idea has become central to my work and working with the RHS Science & Collection team our exhibit at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show explores the theme Bringing Nature Home, demonstrating how gardens of every size — from small urban courtyards to larger country plots — can become thriving habitats for wildlife.

The encouraging news is that creating a wildlife-friendly

planting and how we manage our outdoor spaces.

Start with plants

Plants are the foundation of biodiversity. They provide food, shelter and breeding spaces for insects, birds and other wildlife. Choosing a diverse range of plants that flower at different times throughout the year helps support pollinators such as bees, butterflies and hoverflies from early spring through to autumn.

Research carried out by the Royal Horticultural Society has identified thousands of plants that are particularly valuable to pollinators and have produced the Plants for Pollinators planting list (https://www.rhs.org.uk/science/research/ plants-for-pollinators). By incorporating some of these into your planting scheme, you can transform your garden into

Layered planting — combining trees, shrubs, perennials and ground cover — is especially effective. This structure mimics natural habitats and creates a variety of niches

Many traditional gardening practices have focused primarily on appearance. Increasingly, however, gardeners are recognising that gardens can be both beautiful and

Small features can make a significant difference. Leaving a small area of longer

grass can provide shelter for insects. A log pile or some dead wood can become habitat for beetles and fungi. Climbers and hedges offer nesting sites for birds, while ponds — even very small ones — are among the most valuable habitats you can introduce.

Composting garden waste rather than removing it also supports soil health and encourages the complex communities of fungi and microorganisms that underpin healthy ecosystems.

Slow down and notice what’s there

One of the most rewarding aspects of wildlife gardening is simply observing what appears once habitats improve. Watching and listening to wildlife helps gardeners understand how their space is functioning as an ecosystem. You might notice the different sounds of bees visiting flowers, the territorial song of a robin from a hedge, or the tiny footprints of animals around a pond. These small observations help build a deeper connection with nature and provide valuable clues about which plants and habitats are working well.

Recording wildlife sightings can also contribute to wider conservation efforts. National schemes such as the Big Garden Birdwatch or Big Butterfly Count rely on gardeners across the country sharing what they see.

Gardens as part of a bigger network

Perhaps the most powerful idea behind wildlife gardening is that every

garden matters. Research shows that a single garden can support more than 2,600 species of plants and animals, from pollinating insects to birds and mammals.

When many gardens in a neighbourhood adopt wildlife-friendly practices, they form a connected network of habitats that allow species to move through towns and cities. This principle sits at the heart of the Chelsea exhibit. The garden takes inspiration from a row of neighbouring homes, illustrating how individual gardens — though separate — become interconnected habitats through nature.

Every action has a positive effect

Improving biodiversity in your garden does not have to happen all at once. Small, incremental changes — planting a few pollinator-friendly flowers, leaving seedheads for winter birds, or creating a small habitat feature — can have a surprisingly large impact.

Gardening has always been about cultivating beauty and enjoyment, but today it also offers something more: the opportunity to actively support nature.

And perhaps the most hopeful message is this — when gardeners work with nature rather than against it, every positive action helps bring nature home.

Padel, private members’ clubs and wellness attract a new country set

Padel, private members clubs, wellness and wildlife are on the wish lists of a new generation of city dwellers heading for the countryside.

The Cotswolds may be hot but for the cognoscenti, the patch of Somerset in and around Bruton, the countryside around Compton Abbas in North Dorset and East Sussex close to Glyndebourne are where the new country set are putting down roots.

Speaking on a countryside special episode of the Winkworth Property Exchange podcast, Will Hosie, Lifestyle Editor of Country Life magazine, said: “Anyone can leave London and be happy. After covid saw many move to the country for the first time, we’ve seen more urban exports cropping up in rural areas in the intervening years. More private members’ clubs, for starters, many of them focused on wellness. Businesses are keen to capitalise on people wanting to be in nature, close to wildlife and open water. Retreats

seem to abound. Yeotown in North Devon is my personal favourite.”

“You certainly don’t get the immediacy of services in the country that you get in London, but the big coffee debate has definitely moved on. And no trouble getting a milk-free alternative.”

The unmistakeable thwack of padel has also penetrated the countryside. Will said: “Padel has that clubby element. Sam Pullin, who sold the clothing brand Beaufort & Blake a few years ago, is building with his wife Mary what the two are calling ‘Britain’s most beautiful padel court’, Racquet Garden, just outside Bruton.”

Over in Petersfield, Hampshire, padel has also become a big hit. The difference is courts are £15 an hour compared to £100 an hour in London, according to Harry Wilde, of Winkworth’s Petersfield office.

The popular market town is a magnet for London leavers, attracted by a friendly, welcoming community, great transport links to London in just

under an hour, excellent schools and surrounded by the exceptional setting of the South Downs National Park.

Harry told the podcast: “People like working in the city and escaping to the country to come home and enjoy rural life. We are close to Winchester and Guildford and some people commute there for work and return to the Petersfield area to live. Prices start from around £500,000. You can get a large, detached house in Petersfield for up to around £1.5m. In a more semi-rural location with more space, prices tend to be £1.5m upwards. We see lots of people from London and other cities who visit Petersfield and love the markets and the friendliness of the place and decide to make the move.”

On the Country Life rural radar, Will Hosie told the podcast that while the Cotswolds is still most talked about, particularly since J D Vance and his motorcade rolled through Charlbury last summer, there are other places attracting London leavers. He said: “My favourite place is the patch of Somerset in and around Bruton, where there happened to be the highest level of house sales transactions post-covid. It has an amazing arts scene, with

nearby Glastonbury and Hauser & Wirth being a big draw, a Michelinstarred restaurant called Osip, and surrounded by beautiful landscapes. North Dorset, where Guy Ritchie has bought an airfield at Compton Abbas, is another favourite place as well as the Sussex countryside close to Petworth and near Glyndebourne.”

"After covid saw many move to the country for the first time, we’ve seen more urban exports cropping up in rural areas in the intervening years. More private members’ clubs, for starters, many of them focused on wellness."

Glasshouses with celebrity cachet

David Beckham, Alan Titchmarsh, Mary Berry, Lord Heseltine and Lord Rothschild are all proud owners of bespoke Victorian glasshouses

Nelly Hall reveals how glasshouses are now much coveted features for the garden.

Long celebrated for its craftsmanship and architectural sensitivity, Victorian glasshouse makers Alitex approaches the greenhouse not as an add-on, but as an extension of the way we want to live.

As Nelly Hall, Alitex's Creative Director, puts it, “what’s good for plants is good for people”.

At the heart of every Alitex design is an understanding of how a greenhouse breathes. Full-length side vents paired with opposing roof vents create a natural chimney effect: warm air rises, roof vents open, and cooler air is drawn in below. In the context of an outdoor kitchen, this gentle, continuous airflow is transformative. It allows for wood burning stoves to sit comfortably beneath glass without the space feeling stifling. Add discreet external shading in high summer and a heat source in winter, and the result is a perfectly sheltered spot to food prep and dine if the weather interferes.

Greenhouses are fundamentally about growing, sowing seeds, potting on, coaxing citrus through the colder months, yet increasingly they are becoming hybrid spaces. Nelly describes three distinct types of client as the committed grower, the

aesthete who loves the atmosphere and the quietly expanding middle group, who want both. It is this second group that is growing fastest, those who see the greenhouse as a place to nurture plants and themselves.

The most successful greenhouse kitchens do not abandon their horticultural roots. A potting bench might sit at one end, herbs grow within arm’s reach of the prep counter, and terracotta pots soften the lines of cabinetry. A metal table can serve as both a potting surface and dining table. It’s this layered use that gives the space soul.

Architecturally, Alitex begins with the main house. Proportion, pitch and detailing are carefully considered so that the structure feels as though it has always belonged. A lean-to greenhouse running along the back of a rose garden wall or a larger bespoke standalone model allow for distinct zones prepping, dining, even a quiet corner for coffee or cocktails.

Nelly’s advice is wonderfully practical, mark out the footprint with string before committing. Live with it. Place furniture within the outline. Consider where guests will gather, how doors will open, where the sun falls at different times of day. And, she

notes, “No one ever says they wish they’d bought a smaller greenhouse.”

Power supply is another essential consideration. Proper electrics unlock year-round use, heating for winter suppers, pendant lighting suspended from the ridge for atmosphere, refrigeration for chilled drinks and, perhaps most crucially, somewhere to plug in the kettle. An outdoor kitchen should feel effortless, not improvised.

The appeal of Alitex’s structures has drawn an impressive and discreet clientele, including figures such as Mary Berry and Lydia Millen, who appreciate the function of these heritage greenhouses.

There is something deeply grounding about cooking surrounded by green growth. With underfloor heating gently warming stone floors and fairy lights woven through winter branches, the greenhouse becomes a lantern in the garden. In summer, doors thrown open blur the boundary entirely, scent, birdsong and conversation drifting freely. It is about creating a room that allows us to gather, to grow, to entertain and to retreat. A place that works beautifully for plants and therefore, beautifully for people too.
