Five months ago, I sat down with Henry Belmonte to write about a bourbon that had quietly been five years in the making.

Brie Belmonte, Henry’s daughter, has watched that growth unfold firsthand. “When we launched, we hoped people would love it,” she said. “Seeing guests come back for another bottle, hearing their feedback, and now watching Rockpile receive recognition from respected competitions has been surreal. It’s incredibly rewarding knowing something our family believed in has connected with so many people.”

At the time, Rockpile Bourbon was still a new name. The bottles had just begun arriving on doorsteps, the story was only beginning, and none of us knew exactly where the journey would lead. Today, Rockpile Bourbon is woven into the Wellington Cellars experience. Guests can immerse themselves in The Journey, a guided tasting that showcases the craftsmanship behind every bottle, or simply enjoy Rockpile neat or in a handcrafted Old Fashioned while relaxing at the winery. For a project that spent five years patiently aging before ever reaching a glass, the achievements in just months is both exciting and humbling. It speaks not only to the quality of the bourbon, but to the community that has embraced it from day one.

Looking back at that first conversation, one thing stands out: Henry never described Rockpile as just bourbon. He described it as another seat at the Belmonte family table. Five months later, that table has only grown. As Batch Two begins, one thing remains unchanged. Rockpile Bourbon was never meant to be exclusive. It was made to be shared. And while five years built the bourbon, the last five months have shown just how far it can go.

Rockpile Bourbon has also quickly become one of the most highly decorated new bourbons in the country, earning Platinum, Best of Show, and Gold honors across five major spirits competitions. Recognition like this often takes years to build. For Rockpile, it happened almost overnight. But ask Henry what he’s most proud of, and the answer isn’t the medals. It’s watching people discover it. “We never set out to chase awards,” Henry shared. “We wanted to create a bourbon we’d be proud to pour for family and friends. Everything else has simply been a bonus.” What began as a bottle has become an experience all its own. Perhaps the biggest milestone of all? They’re already starting Batch Two.

Writing the Next Chapter at Beaulieu Vineyard Winemaker Nate Weis talks with Allan Cates about his journey into wine, the legacy of Beaulieu Vineyard and his vision for the next generation of Napa Valley winemaking. For Nate Weis, winemaking was a path he chose for himself. Raised in a Napa Valley winemaking family, he explored other interests before realizing that wine brought together his passions for science, agriculture, creativity, history and people. Now, after more than a decade at Silver Oak, Weis has returned to Napa as winemaker at Beaulieu Vineyard, where he is embracing the legacy of one of California’s most iconic wineries while helping shape its future. ■ You grew up in Napa Valley in a winemaking family, but

still took a bit of a winding road into wine. What was the moment that made you say, “Okay, this is it — I’m all in”? ine has always been in the picture growing up, but I W never felt like I had to rush into becoming a winemaker. I intentionally took a little longer to find my own path because I wanted to explore other interests to make sure that if I came back to wine, it was because I genuinely loved it, and not because it was expected of me. I realized that there really wasn’t another career that brought together everything I was passionate about. Winemaking blends science, agriculture, creativity, history, and people, and once I understood that connection, it clicked for me. That said, the road wasn’t all that winding. I decided when I

was about 19 that I wanted to explore being a winemaker as a career. My first harvest at Groth in 2002 was simply too much fun. I remember driving a tractor, spreading pomace with a manure spreader at sunset in Oakville, with jackrabbits crossing my path and thinking there was nowhere on earth I’d rather be. I was hooked.

■ You recently made the move to Beaulieu Vineyard after

more than a decade at Silver Oak. What lessons did you bring with you, and what ultimately drew you to BV — the history, the Rutherford terroir, or the opportunity to steward one of Napa Valley’s most iconic vineyards? S ilver Oak was an incredible place to grow as a winemaker. Over the past decade, I learned the importance of consistency, long-term thinking, and never compromising on quality, whether you’re making one wine or an entire portfolio.

The opportunity to help shape the next chapter of one of Napa Valley’s most iconic wineries was something that really drew me to Beaulieu Vineyard. The history is remarkable, and so are the vineyards, specifically the Rutherford estate vineyards. It’s a privilege to work with fruit that has defined Napa Valley Cabernet for generations, and it’s not something that happens for most winemakers. My goal is to honor that legacy while continuing to evolve it thoughtfully for generations to come.

■ You’re stepping into a role once held by André

Tchelistcheff, the “grandfather” of modern California wine. Does that legendary heritage feel like a heavy weight on your shoulders, or is it more like having the ultimate winemaking cheat sheet? hile it’s not a responsibility I take lightly, it’s definitely a W privilege more than a weight. André helped establish the foundation for modern winemaking, and his influence is still felt today. Rather than trying to follow in his footsteps, I see my role as honoring the principles he champions, while helping write the next chapter for BV. Great wineries continue to evolve, and that’s what makes this opportunity so exciting.

If I can contribute a fraction of what Andre did to our craft, industry, and the next generation of winemakers and viticulturists, I can say it was a very successful career indeed.

■ For travelers visiting the Rutherford AVA for the first time,

how would you describe that famous “Rutherford Dust” to someone who isn't a wine geek? How does it actually show up in the glass?

The term ‘Rutherford Dust’ is used to describe the character of wines made from the AVA. Wines from Rutherford tend to have this beautiful combination of richness and structure, with fine, cocoa-like tannins and an earthy, savory character that complements the fruit rather than overwhelms it. You don’t have to be a wine expert to appreciate it. It’s about recognizing that there’s something distinctive and memorable about it.

■ BV has a long history, but you’re clearly looking forward

to Napa Green certifications and eco-conscious farming. What’s the most surprising “green” initiative you’re working on that people wouldn't expect from a 120-yearold winery? F or me, sustainability isn’t a separate initiative but a part of the broader process to make great wine. Healthy soils, thriving ecosystems, and responsible farming lead to healthier vines and better fruit. At BV, we’re investing in regenerative farming, restoring habitats around the Napa River, using renewable energy, and managing water carefully because these practices strengthen our vineyards for the long term. Our responsibility is to leave this land in better shape for the next generation, and I truly believe that’s how you make the best wines, too.

■ You’ve talked about using “precision viticulture” and

modern tech in the cellar. Is there a specific piece of gadgetry or data that you are relying on right now that helps you stay ahead of the curve? he most valuable technology is anything that helps us T better understand what’s happening in the vineyard. Today, we’re using precision viticulture like aerial imagery, remote sensing, and soil mapping to detail vine and soil health and weather data to make more informed decisions block by block. However, technology doesn’t replace walking through the vineyard or tasting the fruit. It simply gives us better information so we can farm more thoughtfully and let each site express itself as clearly as possible.

■ BV has always been known for Cabernet Sauvignon,

especially the Georges de Latour Private Reserve. How do you approach evolving a wine with that kind of reputation without losing what makes it iconic? W hen you’re working with an iconic wine like Georges de Latour Private Reserve, the goal isn’t to reinvent it. It’s to be a good steward of its legacy. Every vintage should reflect the character that people know and love, while also expressing the uniqueness of that growing season. My job is to keep learning, redefining our approach in the vineyard and cellar, and making thoughtful decisions that allow the wine to continue evolving without losing its identity.

■ We know the Cabs are king here, but are there any

“passion projects” or experimental varietals in the works that travelers should look for on the BV tasting menu? C abernet Sauvignon will always be at the heart of BV, but one of the things I’m most excited about is helping guests discover the full breadth of what we do. We produce outstanding Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and other varietals that really showcase the diversity of Napa Valley. Beyond the wines themselves, our new hospitality experiences will give visitors a deeper look at our history, vineyards, and the philosophy behind every bottle. There’s always something new to discover, whether it’s a wine or the story behind it. One of the newer experiences that folks should check out is the Georges de Latour Table experience, which is a dedication to the iconic founder. This multi-course pairing experience reveals Beaulieu Vineyard at its most refined and expressive through different vintages of the Georges de Latour Private Reserve. ■ There has been major renovation that had just finished

at the winery with an all-new tasting room that recently opened in July. How do you balance modernizing the experience for visitors while preserving the soul of such a historic property?

It’s never about changing what makes BV special; rather, it’s about creating new ways for people to experience it. The new tasting room allows us to better share our history and wines in a more engaging and immersive way, while staying true to the character that has defined BV for more than 125 years. If guests leave with a deeper appreciation for our legacy and where we’re headed, then we’ve struck the right balance.

■ Looking ahead, what excites you most about the future of BV — and what kind of legacy do you hope to help shape for the next generation of Napa Valley wine lovers?

I ’m excited about continuing to build BV’s incredible legacy while ensuring it remains relevant for future generations. BV has been shaping Napa Valley for more than a century, and I see our responsibility as building on that foundation by continuing to elevate our vineyards, our wines, and the experiences we create for our guests. If we can inspire the next generation to appreciate the history, craftsmanship, and sense of place behind every bottle, then I think we’ve done our job well.

A Half-Century of Discovering Sonoma County Wine Country For 50 years, Wine Road has been helping visitors discover the wines, people and places that make Northern Sonoma County special. What began in 1976 as a pioneering alliance of 12 wineries has grown into one of California wine country’s most recognizable wine-travel organizations, connecting travelers with more than 50 wineries and a landscape that rewards exploration around every bend. The anniversary is more than a milestone — it’s an invitation to experience the region.

The 50th Anniversary Grand Tasting will take place September 26 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Foppiano Vineyards, one of Wine Road’s founding members. Designed as the organization’s signature anniversary celebration, the evening brings together an extraordinary collection of Sonoma County wineries, with 50 wineries pouring at the walk-around tasting and approximately 150 wineries represented throughout the event. For visitors, it’s an opportunity to sample an impressive breadth of Sonoma County wines in one setting while meeting the people behind the bottles. Expect an eclectic mix of familiar favorites and discoveries, with pours showcasing the diversity of the region’s vineyards and winemaking styles. Wine is only part of the celebration. Local renowned chefs and restaurants will provide food to complement the tasting, while live music sets the mood for an evening that encourages guests to linger. The event was deliberately scheduled for late afternoon, allowing attendees to escape the heat of the day and enjoy the golden-hour glow as the sun begins to set over wine country. Dancing shoes are encouraged. The celebration also reflects Wine Road’s long-standing commitment to the community. A silent auction will benefit the Redwood Empire Food Bank and the Healdsburg Museum, which is also celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. It’s a fitting partnership: both organizations preserve and strengthen the community that has helped make Sonoma County such a compelling destination.

Following a successful inaugural year, Alexander Valley Winegrowers (AVW) is expanding Alexander Valley Wine Week for 2026, inviting visitors to experience the region beyond the tasting room through a week of exclusive vineyard excursions, harvest celebrations, educational experiences, and behind-the-scenes access available only during Wine Week. An intimate afternoon of world-class classical music, exceptional wines and culinary delights supports artistic and community programs. Valley of the Moon Music Festival will bring together worldclass music, exceptional wine and Sonoma hospitality for its Annual Benefit Concert on Sunday, September 20, 2026, from 4–6 p.m. at The General’s Daughter in the heart of Sonoma. The intimate afternoon will feature a live performance by internationally acclaimed violinist Alexi Kenney, accompanied by wines from Bartholomew Estate Wines and elegant appetizers by Delicious Dish. Proceeds from the event will support Valley of the Moon Music Festival’s year-round artistic, educational and community programs. Kenney, a Palo Alto native, has established an international career distinguished by adventurous programming and collaborations with leading orchestras and musicians. His recent appearances include performances with the Dallas Symphony, Pittsburgh Symphony and San Francisco Symphony, along with debuts with the Houston Symphony, Slovak Philharmonic and Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana. A recipient of an Avery Fisher Career Grant and Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award, Kenney has also appeared at Carnegie Hall, Wigmore Hall, Lincoln Center’s Mostly Mozart Festival and numerous renowned chamber music festivals. Adding to the afternoon, guests will have the opportunity to bid on a selection of distinctive silent auction offerings celebrating music, wine and the spirit of Sonoma Wine Country. Among the experiences is “Vintage and Classical,” an intimate gathering for six to eight guests in a beautiful Glen Ellen home featuring a private performance by acclaimed classical guitarist Marc Teicholz. The evening pairs music with a rare four-bottle vertical tasting of Ridge Vineyards Monte Bello from the 2010 through 2013 vintages, accompanied by

small bites and a taste of 40-year-old Vintage Port. Other silent auction lots will feature Chateau Montelena wines, including cabernets from 2005, 2016, and 2017 vintages. On a busy corner of the Sonoma Plaza find respite from the heat and crowds in the tasting room of the award-winning and aptly-named Corner 103 Wine. Owner and founder Lloyd Davis has one mission with his wines: to make tasting enjoyable, non-intimidating, and educational. Winemaker Ron Goss takes a thoughtful, terroir-driven approach, sourcing fruit from regions where each variety thrives. Nearby Carneros provides the grapes for Corner 103’s popular Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, while Sonoma Coast fruit is used for the Rosé of Pinot Noir and North Coast grapes go into the Sparkling Rosé. The winery also explores lesser-known varieties, including Grenache and Carignan, always selecting fruit from the regions best suited to showcase their character.

Lloyd Davis started in the wine business simply by drinking wine. After a long and successful career in finance and a bit of learning about how to make wine, retirement brought on the founding of a winery “totally by accident.” “Everyone is a wine expert because you know what you like and dislike,” says Davis and he is serious about making wine approachable. “Most people are afraid or intimidated by wine. We help them understand that enjoying a glass of wine is as simple as drinking a glass of water … some people like tap while others prefer bottled. Some prefer sparkling while others prefer still. It’s all a preference.” “You pick up a glass and take a sip, just like water. We also help our guests understand food pairings,” explains Davis. “We explain that every palate is different. While rules exist, they are meant to be broken.
