The winery that helped put Carneros on the map celebrates forty years of excellence by honoring its namesake and embracing a bold new future
From an intimate wine-paired cave dinner to a vibrant vineyard celebration, experience a weekend dedicated to exceptional wines, lasting memories, and the journey ahead.
40th Anniversary Celebration Dinner – July 31

The festivities begin at the table with an extraordinary evening celebrating 40 years of winemaking excellence and the start of an exclusive anniversary weekend. Guests will enjoy an elegant, multi-course dinner in the winery’s cave, thoughtfully paired with rare library wines in an intimate and elevated setting. The evening will also feature a special pour of the commemorative 40th Anniversary Cuvée, creating a memorable toast to four decades of craftsmanship and innovation.
Forty years ago, Gloria Ferrer helped introduce the world to the remarkable potential of Carneros. What began with a vision to craft world-class sparkling wine on this windswept estate has grown into a winery that has welcomed generations of guests, celebrated countless milestones, and become woven into the fabric of Sonoma.
As Gloria Ferrer celebrates its 40th anniversary, the winery reflects on both where it began and where it is headed. Milestones offer an opportunity to honor the people, places, and moments that have shaped the journey. For Gloria Ferrer, that means celebrating four decades of farming its estate vineyards, pioneering sparkling wine, and sharing exceptional wines around tables filled with family and friends. At the same time, anniversaries are not simply about looking back. They are about looking ahead with the same spirit of curiosity, innovation, and optimism that inspired the winery’s founding in 1986. As Gloria Ferrer enters its next chapter, it embraces a renewed vision inspired by the woman whose name has always graced its bottles.
The winery remains rooted in the story of Gloria Ferrer herself — a tribute to strength, grace, courage, and the belief that recognition matters. It is both a celebration of the legacy that brought the winery to this moment and a reflection of the values that will guide its future. While its wines continue to be crafted for all to enjoy, Gloria Ferrer recognizes that behind every great achievement are the people who inspire it.
This philosophy continues to shape the future of Gloria Ferrer — from new wine innovations and organic farming practices to elevated guest experiences designed to create moments worth savoring. As the winery celebrates forty years, it not only honors its history but recommits itself to a future that is thoughtful, purposeful, and inspired by the enduring spirit of Gloria herself.
As Gloria Ferrer marks this milestone anniversary, the winery raises a glass to its past, its future, and to the woman whose name — and spirit — continues to inspire everything it does. For Her.
Be part of an unforgettable anniversary weekend to honor four decades of sparkling winemaking excellence and look ahead to the future. Reserve your place and raise a glass to 40 years of tradition, innovation, and an enduring spirit.
40th Anniversary Weekend Celebration – August 1 & 2
The celebration continues at Willow Springs with a vibrant weekend honoring 40 years of exceptional winemaking. Guests are invited to sip, savor, and explore while enjoying outstanding wines, culinary offerings, live music, and festive experiences throughout the property.
Exclusive behind-the-scenes seminars led by the Directors of Winemaking, Vineyard, and Production provide a rare insider’s look at the artistry and dedication behind every bottle. Surrounded by the beauty of the vineyard, guests can gather to celebrate cherished memories, meaningful connections, and the exciting future ahead in an atmosphere of relaxation, discovery, and indulgence.

Both Whitehall Lane and Lonohana are 100% estate grown, which is rare enough on its own. But as the two teams got to know each other, the similarities became striking: the way they care for their soil, manage fermentation, approach sustainability, and ultimately coax flavor from the land.
While wine is grown and made in nearly all of our 50 states, Hawaii is the only one that can grow cacao. On a recent flight home from Hawaii, Katie Leonardini, second generation proprietor of Whitehall Lane Winery, was traveling with her sister and her husband, Bill, who had recently become involved with a Hawaiian cacao farm called Lonohana. Fascinated by the similarities between winegrowing and cacao farming, and blown away by the flavor of the extraordinary chocolate, Leonardini thought a partnership made perfect sense.
“The more I learned about cacao farming, the more similarities I saw to winegrowing,” says Leonardini. “Both require patience, long-term thinking, and a deep respect for the land. In both cases, the quality of the final product begins in the field.”
Lawrence Boone of Lonohana Chocolate provides insight. “One of the biggest similarities between cacao and grape growing is timing,” he explains. “After planting, both grapevines and cacao trees take roughly four to five years before yielding a first crop, with full maturity arriving around years seven to ten. Our trees then produce for about 30 to 35 years. So, like winegrowing, it’s a generational commitment.”
Terroir is another major connection, as both wine grapes and cacao are capable of expressing the nature of their environment, Lonohana’s cacao is grown on Oahu’s North Shore, a comparatively cooler region for cacao. “Our beans naturally develop bright acidity, citrus notes, and a richness that directly reflects our growing conditions,” says Boone. “The language we use to describe great chocolate — fruit, acidity, texture, and complexity — is often the same language used for great wine. That’s not a coincidence!”
Lonohana products are now available for purchase in the Whitehall Lane tasting room, including chocolate bars, a mini-bar gift set with five different flavors, and chocolate-covered organic macadamia nuts.
“Organic Hawaii-grown macadamia nuts are quite rare,” explains Boone. “We’re the only producer combining them with Hawaii-grown chocolate.”
Eventually, an elevated wine and chocolate pairing experience will be rolled out that truly showcase both Whitehall Lane wines and Lonohana chocolates.
The Merlot Revival: Tasting Experience and Seminar
The Merlot Revival will bring guests into Whitehall Lane’s generational commitment to Rutherford Merlot through a guided tasting experience led by Director of Winemaking Jason Moulton. Launching September 2026, the experience will move through library vintages, current releases, and barrel samples, offering guests a rare look at the evolution of Merlot at Whitehall Lane. An educational seminar will accompany the tasting program, tracing Merlot’s resurgence in Napa Valley and Whitehall Lane’s continued investment in the varietal long before its recent comeback conversation.
The Family Table is a new dinner series hosted personally by members of the Leonardini family, bringing intimate table gatherings to both the Whitehall Lane estate and select cities including Los Angeles, San Diego, Scottsdale, and Dallas. Extending the experience beyond Napa Valley and “on the road,” Family Table is designed as an opportunity for guests to connect directly with the Leonardini’s, offering an insider’s look into the family, wines, and hospitality philosophy behind Whitehall Lane. Each dinner will welcome fresh faces and existing members, pairing current releases and library wines with seasonal menus in a relaxed communal setting.

Two wineries that we’re focusing on in this installment – Chateau Montelena and Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars – are honoring their historic foundations while continuing to evolve, while Heitz Cellar and Spring Mountain Vineyard, are undergoing renewal.
In May of 1976, California wine arrived with a resounding impact on the world stage. Ten California wineries participated in a blind tasting contest along with some of the most prestigious labels from France. The tasting was organized by wine merchant, Steven Spurrier and wine educator, Patricia Gallagher. Stunningly, the 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay beat out a field of top Burgundies, along with entries from Chalone, Spring Mountain, Freemark Abbey, Veedercrest and David Bruce, to take Top Chardonnay. Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars bested its peers, Ridge, Heitz Cellar and Freemark Abbey, along with its French counterparts, to be declared Top Cabernet Sauvignon. California had arrived. Each of the California participants were buoyed by the news of the results. Each winery would be forever altered by the event, as would the interest in California wines and the trajectory of its subsequent growth.

Chateau Montelena is well-known primarily for the 1976 win in the Chardonnay category. The well-traveled winemaker at the time, Mike Grgich, sourced fruit from three vineyards: Bacigalupi (Sonoma County), John MuirHanna (Napa Valley) – which the fruit from this vineyard is still in Chardonnay in current vintages – and Belle Terre Vineyard (Sonoma County). Chateau Montelena also has a well-deserved reputation for its classic style of Cabernet Sauvignon. Winemaker Matt Crafton along with CEO Bo Barrett have carefully preserved classically styled wines that emphasize the place and vintage.
Before joining Chateau Montelena in 1972, Mike Grgich had already worked at Souverain Winery (1958), Christian Brothers Cellars, and worked under André Tchelistcheff at Beaulieu Vineyard for nine years, after becoming chief enologist at Robert Mondavi Winery.
Today, visitors can experience Story Behind the Bottle, an immersive, cinematic, semi-private tasting experience that brings Chateau Montelena’s 140+ year legacy to life. Using AI-enhanced historical imagery, the experience transports guests into different eras of Montelena, bringing to life the people,

Story Behind the Bottle – an immersive new tasting experience tracing the evolution of Chateau Montelena from 1882 through today.
To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1976 Judgment of Paris, Chateau Montelena will unveil two exclusive limited releases July 4 weekend: a Blanc de Blanc sparkling wine and the inaugural release of Chateau Montelena Brandy.
stories and spirit that helped shape American wine history. Available through the end of 2026, it offers guests traveling over the 4th of July weekend — or any time this anniversary year — a unique opportunity to engage with Napa Valley’s most significant anniversary; $75 per person.
Montelena is also marking the 50th anniversary with two firsts in its portfolio: an inaugural sparkling wine from the John Muir Hanna Vineyard (one of the three original 1973 sources) and an inaugural brandy distilled from Chardonnay across all three original vineyards. Both will be released to the public over Fourth of July weekend. The brandy is available only in California.
Heitz Cellar, now owned by Lawrence Estate, benefited greatly from the JOP showing. Director of Marketing, Katherine Levy, reminds us that back in the 1960s, pioneers like Joe Heitz and Robert Mondavi already knew that Napa Valley could make wines every bit as good as those of Bordeaux. The Judgment of Paris made that common knowledge.
“Now, 50 years later, that verdict has been further reinforced,” says Levy. “Demand worldwide for Napa Valley wines has grown exponentially over the last 50 years, and Heitz Cellar has benefited tremendously from that groundswell — both in our reputation and the growth that came with strong demand for the wines.”

To commemorate the milestone, Heitz Cellar is collaborating with the original wineries on www.jop50.com, a guide that commemorates the JOP 50th with sample tasting itineraries and suggestions for lodging, dining, and more. They will be participating in the group’s official celebration on October 11, 2026. See the end of the story for details.
The winery began offering a special library release of 1976 Martha’s Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon to their members and mailing list in May. While not the 1970 version of the wine that placed 9/10 in the original Judgment of Paris, it honors the 50th Anniversary of the 1976 vintage, and the wine, according to the winery, is still showing spectacularly.
In the 2006 JOP rematch in London and Napa, the Heitz wine placed third, according to Alder Yarrow and the San Francisco Chronicle.

According to Levy, The Lawrence Family, owners of Heitz Cellar, are very personally committed to historic preservation in their projects around the US. Heitz’s historical significance, combined with Gaylon Lawrence’s appreciation for the classical wine style Heitz has never wavered from, made Heitz Cellar a natural entry point for him to join the wine industry in the Napa Valley.
“We still make Martha’s Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon in the same style, and using the same methods, that we did in 1970,” says Levy. “We block malolactic fermentation— an absolute anomaly in the Napa Valley—which forges the wines in a way, making them phenomenally long-lived. In fact, we would not be surprised if the 1970 Martha’s Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon took first place in the lineup this year, after it climbed to third place on the 30th Anniversary. And today, our yields are lower and our farming is much more precise and attentive than it was in 1970. We’re making the best wines we ever have in our history, without abandoning our traditions.”
Spring Mountain Vineyard rose to critical acclaim when its 1973 Spring Mountain Vineyard Chardonnay placed fourth in the groundbreaking Judgment of Paris in 1976. It garnered further fame, when it became the setting for the TV series, Falcon Crest. Earlier this year, the winery entered their commemorative 2024 Spring Mountain Vineyard Heintz Vineyard Chardonnay (Sonoma) in an historic re-enactment, held April 11, 2026, at Nashville’s iconic Union Station Hotel. It was ranked among the top three white wines, alongside Chalone Vineyard Estate Grown Chardonnay 2024 and Joseph Drouhin “Clos des Mouches” Beaune 1er Cru 2023 in a blind tasting inspired by the legendary 1976 competition.
“To be recognized at this moment — on the 50th anniversary of such a defining event — is both humbling and exhilarating,” said Peter Ekman, CEO of Spring Mountain Vineyard. “Chardonnay has always been at the heart of the Judgment of Paris story. To see our wine among the very best today is a tribute to the enduring voice of great vineyards.”
Those vineyards, across 845 acres and four separate estates, three of which were founded between 1872 and 1884, can be toured with Estate Director, Garrett Hales.

While a select group of wineries took center stage in that fateful blind tasting, many others were deeply connected to the moment.

They are being redeveloped after the devastating Glass fire of 2020. Spectacular views await from every aspect of the torched, but recovering hillsides. Seeing the stunning ghost winery, Chateau Chevalier, with its stately palms, brings the dreams of Napa’s immigrant pioneers dramatically to life. But no view is quite as tranquil and inspiring as that from the historic Miravalle Mansion, where special JOP tastings are being held. Looking out over the pool on the manicured lawn, surrounded by exotic botanical gardens a-bloom with the flora of the world, tasting the JOP flight ($95), will fill you with a new appreciation for Spring Mountain’s former owner, Mike Robbins’, dedication to producing wines to rival France. Vertical tastings from the 40+ year library of wines are held in the dramatic caves – blasted by Tiburcio Parrott, original founder of the Miravalle Estate (what became Spring Mountain Vineyard) back in 1884 – with neighbor and rival, Beringer Winery.

Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars preserves the legacy of founder and beloved industry figure, the late Warren Winiarski, in every bottle. Founded in 1970, just six years later, the winning 1973 S.L.V. Cabernet Sauvignon from the estate vineyard, from vines that were only three years old at the time, showed the world that Napa Valley could hold its own in the company of the great wines of Bordeaux. Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars Winemaker Marcus Notaro, who joined the winery in 2013, told us that for the 40th anniversary of JOP, he had the chance to get together with Matt Crafton of Chateau Montelena. They went to London and did a masterclass with Michael Broadbent and Steven Spurrier, and had dinner with them after. “We asked Spurrier what happened after that famous tasting, and he told us that honestly, they went to the shop and toasted with Patricia Gallagher, and then afterward, he went home and had dinner with his wife and kids.” It was such an unexpected result, they had no idea of the ramifications. “Literally, they had no idea we would all forever be tied together in the history of wine,” says Notaro.
In honor of the event, Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars created 1,973 bottles of 2023 JOP Anniversary magnums. “Obviously, we had this 50th anniversary coming up, and it turned out to be a great year,” says Notaro. “Mother nature was so kind and it was perfect for our style of Cab. We have 4 acres that was planted in 1972: they were looking down on the wines that made the 1973. I usually bottle a barrel from there for wine club for Cask 23, as this block makes some of the best wines, with dusty cocoa and velvety tannins. That is the classic signature of SLV. Even right after harvest it was obvious these vines had made a wonderful wine and this is what we should do. No need for a fancy label. We just put it in a special magnum and numbered the bottles.”
One bottle can be yours as part of an overnight experience for two at Bardessono Hotel & Spa and Hotel Yountville, that includes a seasonal lunch, and access to one bottle of the Judgment of Paris 50th Anniversary S.L.V. Magnum. $1976/per couple, plus hotel rate.

Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars will be the setting for an immersive JOP 50th tasting with eight Napa Valley wineries taking place on October 11, 2026. During one of the two timeslots, you can experience the wines of these participants and winners in a “walkaround” style tasting. Reservations and more information are available at stagsleapwinecellars.com.

When you visit wine country, you are generally there for a wine-tasting experience which often includes cheese pairings, a beautiful setting, relaxation, and Wine Country hospitality. Visiting Davis Estates in Calistoga offers more than just the expected. It can be described as experiencing “quiet luxury.” The estate provides understated elegance within a relaxed, casual, but refined atmosphere. Guests will enjoy a distinctive, immersive experience where wine, art, culture, cuisine, scenery, and hospitality harmoniously combine into an unforgettable, intimate afternoon.
The first impression upon entering the tasting area is the expanse of vineyards before you. On a beautiful spring day with the vines blooming, or in the fall as the leaves turn colors (and really, any other time of year), it may well take your breath away. This is a special view.
Davis Estates is a “Bordeaux house,” focusing on Bordeaux varieties, especially Cabernet Sauvignon.
Of the wines produced, only two are blends:
• Zephyr, which represents a Left Bank focus (predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon)
• Classic Chase, representing the Right bank (predominantly Merlot) is named after the owner’s first grandson.

Wineries often draw inspiration from Bordeaux’s historic Left and Right Banks, interpreting these classic styles through the lens of the diverse terroir. Left Bank-inspired blends are typically Cabernet Sauvignon-driven, offering structure, power, and age-worthy complexity, while Right Bank-inspired wines emphasize Merlot and Cabernet Franc, resulting in softer textures, plush fruit, and elegant finesse. Together, they showcase how Old World tradition continues to influence New World winemaking.
There are several tasting experiences to choose from, something for everyone. You can pick from a current-release tasting, a Cab-focused tasting (comparing the differences in taste among four Napa AVAs), or even more focused, specialized tastings.
No matter which you choose, your host will explain Davis’s history and vision while discussing the wines, winemaking philosophy, and the vineyards.
An added accompaniment to all tastings is a food pairing designed by Chef Eric Moulton. These small bites are individual plates of edible art, focusing on presentation and flavor. Tastings will vary every 6-8 weeks, depending on the season and fresh, locally available products.
For those of you who love home cooking, your host will provide recipes at the end of the pairing, so when you take home a bottle, you can prepare your own in-home Davis wine-paired event.

Winemaker Walter Leiva has been with Davis Estates for ten years and follows a philosophy of guiding rather than altering: “where the wine will go.” He considers technology a helpful tool but relies on his palate and signals from the grapes during tasting, aging, and harvest. Despite being tech-savvy and using modern tools, Walter combines New World technology with traditional Old World non-interventional methods, resulting in luxury, small-lot wines. Working with Walter Leiva, Frenchborn winemaker Philippe Melka oversees Davis’s Phase V micro-production, ultraluxury wine project, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, Cabernet Franc, and Cellarium (a blend). These are wines produced from the estate’s best grapes. Acquisition and tastings are limited to Founder’s Club members, with tastings in the special “Cellarium” room (accessed by a palm vein scanner). The Cellarium tasting is individually unique.
Where Art, Architecture, and Panoramic Vistas Meet Wine
It’s virtually impossible to “do everything” in one visit, so you’ll have to plan a repeat trip for new wine releases, new food pairings, and events, especially to experience firsthand the fabric of vistas, art, and architecture that makes Davis so exceptional, giving a deeper understanding of the vision and goal of providing each and every guest with something unique, blending all the senses together.
Mike and Sandy Davis love art and, over the years, have exchanged gifts on special occasions, including original artworks by masters like Picasso, Rembrandt, and Andy Warhol. In the entry hall, impressive art glass by Dale Chihuly lines each side, alongside several Frederic Remington Westernthemed bronzes.
There is a barn from 1916 that displays a vintage player piano from the early 1900s, a restored John Deere and Ford
tractor from around the 1930s-1940s, and an industrial ceiling fan known as the “Big Ass Fan,” yes, that IS the name. As you let your eyes wander, you’ll also notice a jukebox, old saw blades, and old barrels and tables made from wine barrel staves. This is a virtual museum of yesteryear, and if you are a club member, you will have the opportunity to enjoy two parties each year held in this wonderful time capsule.
Touring the estate, you’ll take in an array of remarkable features, including landscaping, fountains (note the Kuegel, a cabernet grape floating on a sheet of water over a wine leaf), art, architecture, and innovative technology. And of course, the wine and the story blend this into an amazing fabric.
Davis Estates is a destination not to be missed, whether you are just starting to enjoy “what” Napa wines are all about or are a more serious connoisseur or collector. Cheers

Moving from cocktails to wine and not sure where to start?
Let your cocktail preferences be your guide.
The flavors you already love — bright citrus, warming spice, herbal notes, or rich, velvety depth — translate beautifully from the cocktail bar to the wine bottle. By matching familiar profiles like acidity, body, and aromatics, you can move from your go-to libation to a wine that wows for a perfect pour — no guesswork required. These comparisons work because cocktails and wines share similar flavor profiles, structure (acid, tannin, sweetness), body, and aromatic cues.

BY TANYA SEIBOLD
Fresh, garden-bright, and citrus-driven, both drinks are built on high acidity with lime and lemon notes, finishing crisp, clean, and zesty. A well-made Margarita — fresh lime, Tequila Blanco, and a touch of agave — delivers the same mouthwatering snap as a grassy, lime-laced Sauvignon Blanc. In both, the vibrant acidity creates a refreshing, palate-cleansing boost that keeps you coming back for another sip.
Bright, aromatic, and citrus-driven, both share herbal notes and a refreshing edge. Gin’s botanicals and tonic’s gentle bitterness align with Albariño and dry Riesling’s floral base, minerality, and vibrant acidity — making each crisp and food-friendly.

Built on clean simplicity, light body, and refreshment over intensity, both are designed for effortless sipping. A Vodka Soda feels weightless and crisp — much like a light, never-heavy Pinot Grigio. Subtle in flavor yet bright and pure, each appeals for its versatility and ease: a no-fuss, refreshing profile that’s all about drinkability without heaviness.
Palomas balance grapefruit bitterness, bright citrus, and a touch of salt. Chenin Blanc echoes this with tangy acidity, citrus and orchard fruit, and a subtle mineral, sea-spray note–delivering the same refreshing sip. The result is a shared sense of vibrancy, texture, and lift in both glass and cocktail.

Lemon Drops are tart and balanced with a touch of sweetness, while unoaked Chardonnay offers bright acidity with citrus, apple, and a hint of honey. Both share a clean, zesty note and refreshing finish.
Fresh, lively, and crisp, the spritz’s light citrus, gentle bitterness, and bubbles is a good bridge to rosé and sparkling wines, which offer the same brightness and refreshing edge — especially in Brut styles.

Both share a warm, oak-driven signature. An Old Fashioned’s vanilla, caramel, and spice notes are similar to a full-bodied, oaked Chardonnay, with a rounded richness that’s more about depth and texture than sweetness.
Red fruit, softness, and finesse — never overpowering. A Boulevardier’s cherry, orange zest, and gentle bitterness mirror Pinot Noir’s cherry-raspberry profile with a subtle bitter edge linked by a shared bittersweet, red fruit character.

Aged rums and many Merlots and Malbecs spend time in oak, developing notes of vanilla, caramel, cocoa, and baking spice. Both also lean into ripe, dark fruit — plum and blackberry — layered with gentle warmth. In rum, these flavors arise from molasses and barrel aging; in wine, they’re shaped by the grape and fermentation.

Both are food-friendly and complex, with savory herbal notes layered over red fruit and bright acidity. A Negroni’s orange peel, cherry-like sweetness, and herbal depth imitates Sangiovese and Barbera’s tart cherry and dried herb character — each living in that fruit-meets-savory space of balanced, nuanced, and never overtly sweet.
Whiskey drinkers often feel right at home with Zinfandel or Syrah thanks to their shared bold, spice-driven profiles and warming alcohol presence. Both wines deliver pepper, dark fruit, and higher ABV, echoing the same weight, intensity, and gentle back-of-the-throat heat found in a neat pour of whiskey.

The calling cards of both an Espresso Martini and Petite Sirah are depth, intensity, and structure — dark, bold, and richly layered. The coffee notes in the cocktail reflect the wine’s toasted richness, with flavors of blackberry,
Rooted in warm vanilla, oak spice, and smooth depth, both share a structured, layered profile shaped by oak, spice, and bitters. Cabernet is akin to the Old Fashioned with its firm tannins, oak influence, and dark berry fruit, all wrapped in a subtly spicy, dusty complexity.

In the quiet folds of Lake County wine country—where volcanic soil meets open sky and the pace of life softens into something more intentional—there is a table unlike any other. It is here, at Harmony in Kelseyville, that a new kind of culinary destination is quietly taking shape. Not with fanfare, but with intention. Not for the masses, but for those who seek something rare.
Harmony is not simply a restaurant. It is an experience—one that unfolds slowly, thoughtfully, and with purpose. With just a handful of seats gathered around a single communal table, each evening feels less like dining out and more like being invited into something deeply personal. A moment. A story. A journey.
At the heart of Harmony is European Michelin Star-trained Chef Jevgenija Saromova, whose cuisine blurs the line between artistry and emotion. Each dish begins long before it reaches the plate—often as a sketch, an idea, a question. Ingredients are sourced with precision and care, many from the same purveyors trusted by Michelinstarred kitchens around the world. Others are grown just steps away, in Harmony’s own micro-farm and orchard, while additional ingredients are thoughtfully sourced from local farms—creating a true expression of the region’s seasonality and abundance. The result is a seven-course tasting menu that evolves with the land and the imagination behind it. A familiar flavor may reveal itself in an entirely unexpected form. Each course builds upon the last, layered with technique, intention, and a quiet sense of wonder.
Guiding guests through this experience is Mara Mehlman, whose warmth and storytelling bring each dish—and each pairing— to life. Together, Mara and Chef Saromova bring with them a legacy of excellence from their previous venture, The Lincoln Inn & Restaurant, which earned recognition from Forbes as one of the “10 Best Restaurants,” including destinations across Asia and Europe. That same level of dedication, refinement, and passion now lives on at Harmony—reimagined in a more intimate and deeply personal setting. Wine, of course, is central to the experience. Located in a region often described as California’s best-kept secret, Harmony embraces the depth and diversity of Lake County’s vineyards—alongside exceptional selections from around the world. Each pairing is curated not just to complement the dish, but to deepen it.
What makes Harmony truly remarkable, however, is not just what is served—but how it makes you feel. Time slows. Senses sharpen. The outside world fades, replaced by candlelight, conversation, and the quiet thrill of discovery.
In an era where dining can often feel rushed or routine, Harmony offers something increasingly rare: Presence. Intimacy. Connection. It is, in every sense, a destination. And for those willing to venture just a little off the expected path, it may very well become the one they remember most.

For more than four decades, Margo Van Staaveren has helped shape the legacy of Beringer Vineyards, combining scientific precision, intuition, and respect for tradition. From an unexpected start at UC Davis to leading Beringer’s acclaimed winemaking program through its 150th anniversary, she has remained dedicated to crafting wines that express both place and purpose. In this exclusive Q&A, Van Staaveren reflects on her journey, her evolving philosophy, and the future of one of California’s most iconic wineries.
■ Can you tell us what made you decide that winemaking was what you wanted to do?
H onestly, my entry into winemaking was serendipitous. I chose the University of California, Davis for college with special education in mind. But science and agriculture intrigued me, and Davis has an excellent winemaking program. I was fascinated by the cyclical nature of winemaking from bud break through harvest to fermentation and blending the wine, so I changed majors and never looked back.
■ You began your winemaking career at Beringer Vineyards in 1979 and now lead its program — how has your journey through more than four decades and 45 harvests shaped your philosophy today?
I t’s an incredible privilege to look back on 45 harvests and realize how much the journey itself shapes what ends up in the glass. When I first started my career as a lab
tech, my perspective was naturally grounded in the precise, technical science of fermentation. However, I soon realized that winemaking truly is an art with its foundation in science. Throughout the rest of my career, I have had incredible mentors that helped evolve my philosophy into its current form: great wine starts in the vineyards, and my role is to guide the wines from vine to bottle. Over the last four decades, my philosophy has evolved into a balance between that foundational science and deep trust in intuition.
■ Beringer is the oldest continuously operating winery in Napa Valley. How do you balance the weight of that 150-year legacy with the creative needed to innovate and keep the wines relevant for modern consumers?
1 50 years is a major milestone that not many American vineyards can claim, and that significance is not lost on me. It’s an honor that I get to carry forward the legacy of these incredible wines, and because I started my career here, Beringer is as much a part of my story as it is the story of the Napa Valley. At Beringer, we aren’t chasing the latest trend but are instead committed to the same quality and accessibility that has people returning to us time and time again. In that vein, I have always been deeply passionate about our Knights Valley sites and am excited to launch our first ever single-vineyard and single-varietal expressions from Knights Valley this year. With that, we are also launching our first ever dedicated Knights Valley tasting experience at our estate where consumers can really dive into what makes this AVA so special. We are always finding new ways to tell our story, even in an AVA that we’ve been farming since the ’60s!
■ You’ve got these incredible 19th-century caves, but you’re also using cutting-edge tech like optical sorters. How do you decide when to stick to tradition and when to let the high-tech gadgets take over?
We look at technology as a way to amplify and expand our legacy. Back in the late 1800s, we were among the first to operate a gravity-fed winemaking facility and to store wine in caves, and that was the height of technology! Continuing to find ways to fine-tune and improve our winemaking process honors that heritage. I think the key is trial and experimentation, we start small and if a piece of technology proves it can improve our precision and quality, we are usually excited to adopt it.
■ Beringer has been a long-standing participant in the Napa Green program. What specific sustainable viticulture practices are currently being implemented at the estate that you believe have the greatest impact on the longevity of the vines?
adapting and preparing for the future. Out of everything we do, I’d say that our regenerative farming practices have the greatest impact. From the thoughtful compost application, cover cropping, low- and no-till farming, and the integration of animals, all of these practices nurture a vibrant, living landscape rooted in healthy soils that contribute to the longevity of the vines.
■ For someone planning their first visit to Napa Valley (and maybe their first stop at Beringer), what wine and experience would you personally recommend they not miss?
S ince we’re celebrating our 150th anniversary this year, we have some exciting events and special offerings. The Estate Tour and Tasting is one of my favorites – it’s a guided tour of the Rhine House that explores the architecture, design, and significance as a Napa Valley landmark, followed by a tasting. There is an outdoor summer music series “The Mix,” and our official 150th Anniversary Celebration is taking place Sepeptember 27, that is a party not to be missed! You can learn more on our website at www.beringer.com/pages/visit.
■ Looking back across your career, what has been

We’re always looking for ways to make wine in a smarter and more environmentally friendly way. From being 100% powered by renewable energy, to wateruse sensors and new cellar technology, we are always

Music in the Vineyards (MITV), Napa Valley’s premier chamber music festival highlights its 2026 season with a return to the newly reopened Robert Mondavi Winery and an appearance by rising piano star Evren Ozel, Bronze Medal winner of the 2025 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition.
Part of the festival’s 2026 theme, “Taking Root: Celebrating America’s 250th,” the concerts bring internationally acclaimed artists to some of Napa Valley’s most celebrated winery venues, pairing world-class chamber music with the region’s renowned wine country setting.
A centerpiece of the season will be Music in the Vineyards’ return to Robert Mondavi Winery on August 16 for the concert “Beyond Words.” The performance marks one of the festival’s most anticipated venue events, bringing chamber music back to one of Napa Valley’s most iconic cultural destinations following the winery’s extensive renovation and reopening. The concert explores the power of music to communicate beyond language through works by Beethoven, Carlos Simon, Ernest Bloch, and more.
Another festival highlight is the appearance of acclaimed young pianist Evren Ozel at Ehlers Estate on August 15 in the program “Tales, Travelers & Tricksters.” Ozel, who earned international recognition as a medalist at the 2025 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, will join renowned clarinetist Julian Bliss for Aaron Copland’s Sonata for Clarinet and Piano and return for Stravinsky’s theatrical Suite from The Soldier’s Tale
Founded in 1995, Music in the Vineyards is one of the nation’s leading chamber music festivals, bringing distinguished artists and emerging stars together for performances in intimate winery venues throughout Napa Valley. The festival’s unique combination of exceptional music, hospitality, and spectacular vineyard settings has made it a cultural destination for audiences from across the country.
Tickets and complete festival information are available at www.musicinthevineyards.org.
“These concerts represent everything that makes Music in the Vineyards unique,” said Artistic Directors Michael Adams and Daria T. Adams. “With welcoming audiences back to the beautifully renewed Robert Mondavi Winery and presenting exceptional young artists such as Evren Ozel, the 2026 season celebrates composers and musicians whose diverse cultural backgrounds help shape the American musical landscape.”
• M axville Winery — August 9 – From the theatrical flair of Jacques Offenbach to the cinematic intensity of Miklós Rózsa, this concert begins with intimate conversations between paired instruments and concludes with a joyful arrangement of Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante.
• Louis M. Martini Winery — August 11 – Benjamin Britten’s haunting Serenade takes center stage, framed by the horn’s ethereal solos. Baltimore Symphony Principal Horn James Ferree and Grammy-award winner tenor Nicholas Phan make their MITV debuts. The program concludes with a more relaxed and sociable side of Beethoven in his playful Serenade for string trio.
• M arkham Vineyards – August 14 – Vienna is more than a city — it is a living artistic legacy. This program traces four centuries of Viennese genius, culminating in Erich Korngold, the legendary film composer who carried the grandeur of his Austrian roots straight to the heart of Hollywood.
In addition to a month filled with performances and events, Music in the Vineyards’ 32nd Annual Season concludes on August 23 with an unforgettable evening of music, dining, and celebration to ensure the ongoing success and future of the event. Set against the storied backdrop of Inglenook in Napa Valley — and raising a glass to the 50th anniversary of the 1976 Judgment of Paris — this special gala concert & dinner honors what it means to call a place home.

This summer, audiences won’t need a passport to experience the charm of a sun-drenched Greek island. The global smash-hit musical Mamma Mia! arrives in Sonoma for the very first time as the grand finale of Transcendence Theatre Company’s 15th Anniversary season of Broadway Under the Stars.
Opening August 13 at Transcendence’s picturesque Field of Dreams venue just steps from Sonoma Plaza, Mamma Mia! transforms wine country into a vibrant Mediterranean escape filled with laughter, romance, and the unforgettable music of ABBA.
Since its debut, Mamma Mia! has become one of the most successful musicals of all time, delighting audiences across the globe with iconic songs including “Dancing Queen,” “Mamma Mia,” “Take a Chance on Me,” “Super Trouper,” and “The Winner Takes It All.” Its universal themes and feel-good energy have made it a favorite among theater lovers and first-time attendees alike.
“This season brings some of the biggest Broadway vibes Sonoma has ever seen — from the powerful story and music of Ain’t Too Proud to the nostalgia of Radio Recall and the joyful energy of Mamma Mia! ,” says Artistic Director Tony Gonzalez.
“Each production celebrates the power of music and how it gives us life.”
Mamma Mia! run will also feature special community celebrations, including an ASL-interpreted performance on Friday, August 21, making the production more accessible to a wider audience, and Pride Night on Saturday, August 29, a joyful evening celebrating inclusion, community, and the uplifting spirit that has become a hallmark of Transcendence Theatre Company.
As Transcendence Theatre Company marks its 15th anniversary, Mamma Mia! promises to be one of the largest and most ambitious productions in the organization’s history, featuring a large cast, energetic choreography, nonstop humor, and the irresistible soundtrack that has had audiences dancing in their seats for decades.
Whether you're a lifelong ABBA fan, a devoted theatergoer, or simply looking for a quintessential Sonoma summer experience, Mamma Mia! offers an evening where Broadway magic and wine country hospitality come together under the stars.
Tickets and information at BestNightEver.org

Part of what makes a Transcendence performance unique is that the experience begins long before the curtain rises. Guests are invited to arrive early for the company's signature pre-show picnic, where local food vendors, Sonoma wines, and live music create a festive atmosphere on the lawn as the sun sets over wine country. As twilight settles in, the stage comes alive beneath the stars, offering a theatrical experience unlike any traditional indoor venue.

Transcendence is partnering with Valley of the Moon Music Festival to showcase Sonoma as one of California’s premier cultural destinations with the Perfect Sonoma Cultural Weekend , July 10-12.
The two organizations are inviting visitors to experience “Classical Music by Day. Broadway by Night.” During the weekend of July 10-12, audiences can pair Transcendence Theatre Company’s Radio Recall with the opening weekend of the Valley of the Moon Music Festival, creating an immersive Sonoma arts getaway with special savings.
Receive 20% off a Bartholomew Estate Winery Oak Grove tasting and 20% off any wine purchases during the Cultural Weekend. Guests simply need to show proof of ticket purchase for both TTC and Valley of the Moon Music Festival concert on their phone to receive the discount.
Transcendence Theatre Company is offering 10% off tickets to Radio Recall with promo code VMMF26 at BestNightEver.org, while Valley of the Moon Music Festival is offering $5 off single tickets with promo code TTC2026 at valleyofthemoonmusicfestival.org.

There’s something magical about a summer afternoon in Lake County, where vineyard-covered hills meet California’s largest natural freshwater lake and the pace of life slows to match the gentle breeze.
On July 11, that easygoing spirit comes alive at Red, White & Blues 2026, a celebration of local wine, live music, food, and community held at scenic Xabatin “Big Water” Community Park in Lakeport.

Presented by Bicoastal Media in partnership with the Lake County Winery Association, the event invites visitors to experience one of Northern California’s most welcoming wine regions in a relaxed, lakeside setting. Instead of formal tasting rooms and structured itineraries, guests can stroll through the park with a wine glass in hand, enjoying conversation with winemakers while listening to live jazz and taking in panoramic views of Clear Lake.
The festival showcases the diversity of Lake County wines, giving attendees the opportunity to discover the region’s distinctive varietals and meet the people behind the bottles. From crisp whites and refreshing rosés to bold reds grown in volcanic soils at high elevations, the afternoon offers a true taste of the region’s character and craftsmanship. Participating wineries will pour selections throughout the event, creating an approachable experience for both longtime wine lovers and newcomers alike.
Music provides the perfect soundtrack for the day, with live jazz performances filling the park with smooth rhythms that complement the relaxed atmosphere. Guests can settle into the shade, dance on the lawn, or simply enjoy the sounds while sampling local vintages.
Beyond the wine, Red, White & Blues celebrates the creativity of Lake County with gourmet food trucks serving a variety of culinary offerings available for purchase alongside artisan vendors showcasing handmade goods and local artwork. The combination of wine, food, music, and shopping creates a festival that feels as much like a community gathering as a wine event.
For those seeking a more intimate experience, VIP admission includes early entry from 11 a.m. to noon, offering extra time with participating wineries before general admission begins at noon. The event continues until 3 p.m., making it an ideal way to spend a leisurely Saturday before exploring the rest of Lake County’s wineries, hiking trails, and lakeside attractions.
Family-friendly and welcoming to wellbehaved dogs, Red, White & Blues captures the laid-back charm that has made Lake County an increasingly popular destination for wine travelers seeking authentic experiences beyond the crowds. It’s a place where exceptional wines, friendly faces, and beautiful scenery come together for an unforgettable summer celebration—one sip, one song, and one sunset at a time.

Each summer, the rolling vineyards and golden hills of Sonoma become the setting for one of California’s most distinctive classical music experiences. From July 11 to 26, the acclaimed Valley of the Moon Music Festival returns for its 12th season with “Postcards from Dvořák,” an inspired musical journey tracing the travels, influences and friendships of the beloved Czech composer Antonín Dvořák.
Widely recognized as Sonoma’s premier chamber music festival, Valley of the Moon has earned a national reputation for its intimate performances on historical instruments, presented with a level of artistry and storytelling that brings 19th-century music vividly to life. Under the direction of co-founders Tanya Tomkins and Eric Zivian, the festival invites audiences to hear familiar masterworks with fresh ears.
This year’s theme follows Dvořák across continents, exploring how his encounters in Prague, Vienna, London, Russia and the United States shaped his rich and expressive musical voice.
“Dvořák was deeply rooted in tradition, yet remarkably open to influences from around the world,” says Zivian. “His music reflects a profound love of life and perfectly embodies our commitment to openness, exploration and joy.”
The season unfolds through seven mainstage concerts at the Hanna Center Auditorium, beginning with “Bohemian Homeland” on July 11 and concluding with “Final Years: Going Home” on July 26. Along the way, audiences will hear works by composers who intersected with Dvořák’s
life and legacy, including Johannes Brahms, Florence Price, Harry T. Burleigh, Charles Ives and Leoš Janáček.
The festival continues its mission to broaden the classical canon by spotlighting underrepresented voices such as Austrian composer Mathilde Kralik and British composer Rebecca Clarke, placing their works in dialogue with more familiar repertoire.
Among the season’s standout performers are violinists Rachell Ellen Wong, Jennifer Frautschi, Elizabeth Blumenstock and Tien-Hsin Cindy Wu, along with Bay Area pianists Jeff LaDeur and Audrey Vardanega. The awardwinning Amizia Quartet returns as the 2026 Fellowship Quartet-in-Residence.
True to Sonoma’s spirit of hospitality, each mainstage concert concludes with a complimentary wine reception, where guests can mingle with musicians while enjoying local wines and sweeping valley views.
Beyond the concert hall, the festival offers Alfresco concerts at La Luz Center and Buena Vista Winery, a free family concert at the Sonoma Community Center, and insightful pre-concert talks curated by Harvard musicologist Kate van Orden. Admission to the La Luz Alfresco concert is pay-what-you-wish.
For music lovers seeking a festival that combines worldclass performances, cultural exploration and the pleasures of wine country, Valley of the Moon Music Festival offers a richly rewarding midsummer escape.
