Add Joy to the Kitchen
NEW WEST KNIFEWORKS IN ST. HELENA REIMAGINES THE EVERYDAY ACT OF COOKING
In wine country, the kitchen is rarely just a place to get dinner on the table. It’s where the day slows down, where a bottle is opened before anything else, where hands fall into rhythm — slicing, tasting, adjusting. The work is part of the pleasure. The process is the point.
That’s the idea New West KnifeWorks was built on. Not just knives, but tools that invite you back into the act of cooking — more present, more intentional, more attuned to the small satisfactions that tend to get lost in a rush.
Professional Chef and Cookbook author Nicki Sizemore’s philosophy focuses on that shift. During a recent signing at New West KnifeWorks’ St. Helena location, she spoke about reclaiming your life and time with the power of intention. “Cooking doesn’t have to be this big production,” she says. “It can be a practice — something that brings you back to yourself.”
For Sizemore, the tools you use are part of that process. Her New West KnifeWorks Santoku has become a constant — something she reaches for instinctively. “I’m in the middle of a book launch — my life is bonkers — but this knife has become a grounding reminder of my own work. It’s like saying, ‘Okay, let’s pause. Let’s just be here. Let’s cook.’”
That attention to the experience is fundamental to how New West KnifeWorks approaches its craft. Founder Corey Milligan explains it simply: “We make knives like we cook — starting with the finest ingredients, shaped by hand.” Each knife is made start to finish by a single maker, not passed down a production line. “We haven’t found a machine that can replace touch,” he says. And so they’ve built a process that prioritizes it.
You can feel that difference immediately. Not just in performance, but in presence. The knives ask to be used, but also to be noticed.
Nikki Sizemore in her element — where intention, nourishment, and a well-loved knife meet.
Custom maker Jack Rellstab brings steel to life, one blade at a time.
New West's signature santoku adds power and grace to the kitchen.
That sensibility is on display at the New West KnifeWorks store in St. Helena. The space feels closer to a gallery than a traditional retail shop. Knives are displayed with intention. Materials are meant to be handled. There’s no rush, no pressure — just an opportunity to connect with the objects and imagine them as part of your own cooking process.
The brand’s credibility runs deep, too. Collaborations, like the “Steph Knife” with Chef Stephanie Izard, reflect a level of design rigor that holds up in professional kitchens, reinforcing that these tools are as functional as they are beautiful.
Beyond the kitchen, New West’s MTN MAN Toy Shop extends the same philosophy into the outdoors — a natural evolution for a brand rooted in the American West. It’s a reminder that the values at play — craftsmanship, durability, and a respect for materials — don’t stop at the countertop.
In the end, New West KnifeWorks offers not just world-class knives, but a shift in perspective. A return to the idea that joy is not something we stumble upon, but something we practice— day by day, slice by slice.
In wine country, that might be the most valuable tool of all.

Just take a look at New West’s Rock Blocks, created by Sarah Gage. These knife holders are less about storage and more about artful display — an invitation to treat your tools like art in the kitchen. Best understood as functional sculpture, each piece is entirely unique, with its own grain, form, and presence — no two are alike. For those seeking something even more personal, custom commissions offer the opportunity to create a one-of-a-kind piece tailored to their collection and space. The result is a visible reminder of a life centered around food, discovery, and hospitality.

Summer at Priest Ranch
Live Music, Global Flavors, and Exceptional Wines
In the heart of Yountville, where world-class restaurants and tasting rooms line Washington Street, Priest Ranch offers a distinctly relaxed and flavorful way to experience Napa Valley. Here, exceptional estate wines and approachable cuisine come together in one seamless destination, allowing visitors to settle in for an afternoon that feels both elevated and refreshingly unpretentious.
Priest Ranch represents the rugged character of the Somerston Estate, a vast mountain property in northeastern Napa Valley with vineyards planted across a range of elevations and soils. The tasting room translates that dramatic terroir into a polished but comfortable setting where guests can explore wines known for richness, structure, and bold personality. Their proprietary blends are the stars, but the portfolio also includes standout Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache Blanc, and other intriguing single varietals.
Among the most popular experiences is the Bacon & Wine Experience, a signature tasting that matches estate wines with chef-prepared bacon bites. The pairing showcases how sweet, smoky, savory, and spicy flavors interact with different wines. It’s a memorable introduction to Priest Ranch’s philosophy: wine should be serious, but tasting it should always be fun.
Just steps away, The Kitchen at Priest Ranch elevates the experience even further. The restaurant delivers seasonally inspired cuisine designed to complement Priest Ranch wines. Menus celebrate local ingredients and bold flavors, whether in a leisurely lunch, an indulgent brunch, or one of the venue’s popular special events.
Summer brings an especially vibrant energy to Priest Ranch. Thursday Night Live transforms the tasting room into one of Yountville’s liveliest gathering spots, pairing live music with wines by the glass and chef-driven bites. Thursday Night Live kicks off July 9 with Latin tunes of the Carlos Ramirez Trio from 6 to 9 p.m.
Sunday Sessions offer a relaxed way to ease into the day, with acoustic performances, brunch offerings, and a welcoming atmosphere that captures the best of Napa Valley weekends.
Whether stopping in for a tasting, savoring a meal at The Kitchen, or attending one of its signature events, Priest Ranch offers a fresh and memorable take on Napa Valley hospitality — where bold wines and inspired cuisine come together in perfect harmony.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW? Judgment of Paris 50th Anniversary
We’re taking a look at the 10 California original players who participated, how the outcome impacted them and how they’re personally commemorating the 50th.
In May of 1976, California wine arrived with a resounding impact on the world stage. Ten California wineries participated in a blind tasting contest along with some of the most prestigious labels from France. The tasting was organized by wine merchant, Steven Spurrier and wine educator, Patricia Gallagher. Stunningly, the 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay beat out a field of top Burgundies, along with entries from Chalone, Spring Mountain, Freemark Abbey, Veedercrest and David Bruce, to take Top Chardonnay. Stag’s Leap Cellars bested its peers, Ridge, Heitz Cellar and Freemark Abbey, along with its French counterparts, to be declared Top Cabernet Sauvignon. California had arrived. Each of the California participants were buoyed by the news of the results. Each winery would be forever altered by the event, as would the interest in California wines and the trajectory of its subsequent growth.

Chalone Vineyard
Planting vines in this arid desert defied logic, but logic is not the driving factor for pioneers. In 1965, when Dick Graff took over the Chenin Blanc vines planted here in 1919, his biggest challenge was water. There wasn’t any. This place is largely a bone-dry desert east of Soledad, about 15 minutes from Highway 101. Climbing to an elevation of 1,800 feet, you suddenly find yourself in the shadow of the Pinnacles. It was rugged work to bring water, but bring it he did, expanding the plantings to including Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Many top winemakers have worked in this special place,

2. Roulet Meursault Charmes Premier Cru 1973 (Burgundy)
3. Chalone Vineyard 1974 (California)
4. Spring Mountain Vineyard 1973 (California)
5. Joseph Drouhin Beaune Clos des Mouches Premier Cru 1973 (Burgundy)
6. Freemark Abbey Winery 1972 (California)
7. Ramonet-Prudhom BatardMontrachet Grand Cru 1973 (Burgundy)
including Michael Michaud (twice), Dan Karlsen (Dehlinger Winery, Chandon, Talbott Vineyards), Gianni Abate (Morgan Winery & Vineyards, Peltier Winery & Vineyards) and Greg Freeman (Hahn Family Wines).
Chalone really came into renown when Graff’s 1974 Chalone Chardonnay came in third out of ten at the Paris tasting, pitted against formidable French white Burgundies like Puligny-Montrachet Domaine Leflaive and Batard-Montrachet. In a subsequent re-tasting of the same wines in San Francisco in 1978, the Chalone came in first once more. And at the latest one, held in Nashville this April, the 50th Anniversary edition 2024 Chalone Estate Chardonnay topped them all, taking first place over Joseph Drouhin “Clos des Mouches” Beaune 1er Cru 2023 and Spring Mountain Vineyard “Heintz Vineyard” Chardonnay 2024.
Made by Greg Freeman, the 2024 Chalone Estate Chardonnay was rated 95 points by Tasting Panel, and exhibits the lavish custard of mango crème brûlée. Available at the Chalone tasting room in Carmel, or online. The Chalone winery closed earlier this year.
Freemark Abbey’s signature style of Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon was introduced after seven partners purchased the winery and elevated its production and reputation. The partners — Dick Heggie, Brad Webb, Bill Jaeger, Frank Laurie Wood, Jim Warren, Chuck Carpy, and John Bryan — earn the winery the nickname “University of Freemark” for its role in producing a who’s who of notable winemakers.
Freemark Abbey 1969 Cabernet Sauvignon and 1972 Pinot Chardonnay
Freemark Abbey Winery
The only winery to have both a white and red included in the 1976 Paris tasting, Freemark Abbey dates to 1886, when it was founded by Josephine Marlin Tychson. The 1972 white entered in the 1976 tasting was actually labeled “Pinot Chardonnay,” not uncommon for the day. The winemaker, Brad Webb, who also the founding winemaker at Hanzell in 1957, was known for Burgundian-style barrel-aged Chardonnay. Freemark Abbey is best known for its Cabernet Bosché, which had already bested a 1970 Château Lafite in a previous tasting of top-level Bordeaux. So, it was no surprise the winery was included in the tasting.
Freemark Abbey will hold several commemorative events, among them a blind tasting at the winery on Monday, October 5, which will be hosted by Cultured Vine. 20 wines will be poured blind — 10 whites and 10 reds — curated by a Master of Wine and a Master Sommelier from among the world's most prestigious producers.
Saturday, October 10 and 11, Freemark Abbey will be one of eight wineries and vintners participating in the Judgment of Paris 50th Anniversary at Stag’s leap Wine Cellars.
Freemark Abbey’s 140th Anniversary Dinner will be held October 17 from, 5:30 to 9 p.m., led by winemaker, Kristy Melton, who will take you on a journey through Freemark Abbey's history, with wines from multiple decades will be thoughtfully paired with each course.
Grgich Hills Estate
Fueled by the extraordinary win for Chateau Montelena, winemaker Miljenko “Mike” Grgich was suddenly quite popular. Grgich Hills Estate’s Digital Marketing Manager, Luke Jeramaz, says his historic victory elicited a huge number of job prospects, but that the offer from Austin Hills (of Hills Bros Coffee) and his sister, Mary Lee Strebl, was most intriguing. The siblings provided the financial backing Mike needed to start his own winery, and thus began Grgich Hills Cellar on July 4th, 1977. Mike’s dream of owning a winery had come true.
In 1986, his nephew, Ivo Jeramaz, immigrated from Croatia to join his uncle in his venture. He serves as Vice President of Vineyards & Production and the head winemaker at Grgich Hills Estate. His devotion to Regenerative Organic farming has made the winery a pillar of sustainable wine tourism in the Valley, enabling the family to craft exceptional, terroir-driven wines for decades to come.
TASTE THE LEGACY
While a select group of wineries took center stage in that fateful blind tasting, many others were deeply connected to the moment.

Mayacamas Vineyards
On the edge of a caldera on Mt. Veeder in 1889, German immigrant John Henry Fisher, planted Zinfandel and created the bones of what would become Mayacamas. PostProhibition, Jack and Mary Taylor acquired the property, and planted Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. The legacy of Mayacamas was in good hands, but perhaps none more so than those of winemaker Bob Travers and his wife, Elinor, who purchased the property in 1968. Travers employed skills from his time at Heitz Wine Cellars to elevate the quality of Mayacamas wines, which was validated at the 1976 Judgment of Paris with the inclusion of the 1971 Mayacamas Cabernet Sauvignon, which ironically placed higher in the tasting than the 1970 Heitz Wine Cellars Cabernet.
Mike Robbins, owner of Spring Mountain Vineyard whose Chardonnay was entered in the 1976 tasting, was also a partner in Mayacamas for a time. He purportedly tried to buy Freemark Abbey at one point.
Today, General Manager Kim Kraner says their winemaking approach has remained remarkably consistent, since the 1950s, and is grounded in classical techniques and a deep respect for site. “Each year, we continue to produce our Cabernet Sauvignon using the same core methods Bob Travers employed for the 1971 vintage, ensuring continuity rather than reinterpretation,” said Kraner.
While the 1976 event was a defining moment for Mayacamas, Kraner says that is broader impact was even more profound for Napa Valley as a whole, helping to legitimize California
Ivo, along with Mike’s daughter, Violet, who serves as President & CEO, carry on the spirit of Mike Grgich, who believed that every person who visits the winery should leave a friend.
Jeramaz says they’ve not directly participated in reenactments, though Mike Grgich’s daughter, Violet Grgich, has provided input on some of them. Most notably was Bottle Shock! The Musical, which debuted in July of 2023, and corrected many of the factual errors that were presented in the original Bottle Shock movie.
Grgich Hills held a 50th Anniversary Celebration at their winery in Rutherford on May 30th and released their new wine, the 2023 Paris ’76 Chardonnay. Made in honor of the anniversary, the wine was made in the same style as the Chardonnay crafted by Mike in 1973 that won in the Paris Tasting.
as a world-class wine region. “For Mayacamas, it affirmed a philosophy already in place,” Kraner shared. “Bob Travers’ steadfast commitment to traditional methods, carried out consistently across 45 vintages spanning six decades, established a singular house style that continues to guide our winemaking today.”
Mayacamas will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Judgment of Paris, on Saturday, June 20th, at their annual Winemaker Dinner, which will feature a selection of rare library wines, including the 1971 vintage. Guests will have the chance to taste the wines that helped define this pivotal moment in California wine history.

Beaulieu Vineyard
One of Napa’s Most Historic Wineries Welcomes Guests to an All-New Hospitality Experience
Bookings are now open for tasting experiences in the restored stone winery, ahead of July opening.
Beaulieu Vineyard is now accepting reservations for tours and tastings in its new Hospitality Center, allowing guests to plan experiences ahead of the center’s grand opening in July. The reservation launch marks the first public step toward opening the historic core of the BV estate to guests, introducing a new chapter in how visitors engage with one of Napa Valley’s most foundational wineries.
Throughout the renovation period, Beaulieu Vineyard has continued to welcome guests at its Reserve Tasting Room on the south end of the winery, where tastings will remain available through June 29. Beginning July 13, guest experiences will transition into the restored building, returning guests to the architectural heart of one of Napa Valley’s most foundational estates and, for the first time at Beaulieu Vineyard, integrating a dedicated culinary program designed to complement the wines and storytelling of the property.
Constructed in the 1880s, the two-story structure long served as the center of BV’s winemaking operations. The multiyear restoration, scheduled for completion in early July, is focused on preserving original materials and architectural character while preparing the space to host guided tastings,
education-driven experiences, and culinary pairings developed with intention.
“Opening reservations is a meaningful milestone for us,” said Luke Magnini, Director of Hospitality, Beaulieu Vineyard.
“For the first time, guests will experience BV’s hospitality fully within these historic spaces, with food thoughtfully integrated as part of how we tell our story. We designed every detail, from the flow of the visit to the role of the culinary program, to feel welcoming, considered, and true to who we are.”
The new Hospitality Center introduces a curated range of tasting experiences designed to reflect the depth and breadth of Beaulieu Vineyard. The offerings are structured to welcome first-time visitors, re-engage longtime followers, and provide club members with deeper access—each guided by professionalism, thoughtful storytelling, and respect for the wines.
Reservations are now avaialble at bvwines.com, with guest experiences beginning July 13 following the Hospitality Center’s grand opening.

Harmony An Intimate Culinary Experience
In the quiet folds of Lake County wine country—where volcanic soil meets open sky and the pace of life softens into something more intentional—there is a table unlike any other. It is here, at Harmony in Kelseyville, that a new kind of culinary destination is quietly taking shape. Not with fanfare, but with intention. Not for the masses, but for those who seek something rare.
Harmony is not simply a restaurant. It is an experience—one that unfolds slowly, thoughtfully, and with purpose. With just a handful of seats gathered around a single communal table, each evening feels less like dining out and more like being invited into something deeply personal. A moment. A story. A journey.
At the heart of Harmony is European Michelin Star-trained Chef Jevgenija Saromova, whose cuisine blurs the line between artistry and emotion. Each dish begins long before it reaches the plate—often as a sketch, an idea, a question. Ingredients are sourced with precision and care, many from the same purveyors trusted by Michelinstarred kitchens around the world. Others are grown just steps away, in Harmony’s own micro-farm and orchard, while additional ingredients are thoughtfully sourced from local farms—creating a true expression of the region’s seasonality and abundance.
The result is a seven-course tasting menu that evolves with the land and the imagination behind it. A familiar flavor may reveal itself in an entirely unexpected form. Each course builds upon the last, layered with technique, intention, and a quiet sense of wonder.
Guiding guests through this experience is Mara Mehlman, whose warmth and storytelling bring each dish—and each pairing— to life. Together, Mara and Chef Saromova bring with them a legacy of excellence from their previous venture, The Lincoln Inn & Restaurant, which earned recognition from Forbes as one of the “10 Best Restaurants,” including destinations across Asia and Europe. That same level of dedication, refinement, and passion now lives on at Harmony—reimagined in a more intimate and deeply personal setting. Wine, of course, is central to the experience. Located in a region often described as California’s best-kept secret, Harmony embraces the depth and diversity of Lake County’s vineyards—alongside exceptional selections from around the world. Each pairing is curated not just to complement the dish, but to deepen it.
What makes Harmony truly remarkable, however, is not just what is served—but how it makes you feel. Time slows. Senses sharpen. The outside world fades, replaced by candlelight, conversation, and the quiet thrill of discovery.
In an era where dining can often feel rushed or routine, Harmony offers something increasingly rare: Presence. Intimacy. Connection. It is, in every sense, a destination. And for those willing to venture just a little off the expected path, it may very well become the one they remember most.
Q&A :
Rombauer Vineyards’s Senior Director of Winemaking
Richie Allen chats with Allan Cates
From a rock-climbing adventure in California to leading one of Napa Valley’s most beloved wineries, Richie Allen has taken an unconventional path to the top of Rombauer Vineyards. At a young age, he discovered that winemaking offered the perfect blend of science, creativity and craftsmanship. In this conversation, he reflects on his journey, the pursuit of consistency across vintages, and how innovation, sustainability and hospitality continue to shape the Joy of Wine at Rombauer.
n Can you tell us a little bit about yourself? Why did you decide that winemaking was what you wanted to do?
I was born in Melbourne, Australia, and I currently live in Napa. Before discovering my interest in winemaking, I originally went to university for molecular biology. During that time, I took a year off to go on a rock climbing trip in California. A mate and I went to an impromptu wine tasting with friends in the Sierra Foothills. One of the wineries was at the Renwood facility, which is now owned by Rombauer Vineyards. This was the first time I experienced tasting red wines side by side. One of them was a Zinfandel, and the other was a Barbera, and side by side, the two tasted completely different – it blew my mind.
n You started at Rombauer Vineyards in 2004 as a harvest intern. In 2006, you became full-time Oenologist, assistant Winemaker in 2007, Head Winemaker in 2008 and in 2013 you became the Senior Director of Viticulture and Winemaking. What was it that made you want to stay? Napa is one of the top places in the world to make wine, and I wanted that on my resume. After my first internship, there was a bit of back and forth working between Australia, New Zealand and Rombauer. My whole life was two bags – one for rock climbing and the other for working at the winery. Before I left Rombauer for the second time, they asked me to stay and offered to give me another visa. I went back to New Zealand and thought about it – that’s when I realized I want to go back.
n Rombauer has such a strong family story and sense of hospitality. When visitors come through the tasting room, how do you hope that legacy shows up in the wines they experience?
Our goal is to maintain the consistent, high-quality style we’ve had for over forty years, so we want that to be reflected in each sip guests have. It’s all about ensuring that guests feel the Joy of Wine from the moment the cork is pulled to the very last drop. When I first came to Rombauer, I was struck by the sheer hospitality here. It wasn’t just about the wine, it’s the welcoming feeling that comes with it, and I hope that each visitor has the same experience when they visit.
n The winery is famous for its bold, fruit-driven Chardonnay style. How do you keep that signature “Rombauer taste” consistent while still letting each vintage tell its own story?
We’ve spent decades really defining what people recognize as the signature Rombauer style with the ripe fruit flavors and the rich, beautifully balanced acidity. Each vintage gives us something a little different, so our job is to listen to the fruit and respond thoughtfully in the cellar. Through carefully picking decisions, fermentation choices, and blending, we’re able to stay true to that signature profile, while still allowing the nuances of each growing season to come through. We really pride ourselves on consistency here.
n Rombauer recently stepped into new territory with Pinot Noir from the Santa Lucia Highlands. What made that the right moment and the right place to expand the portfolio?
We’ve always had a deep respect for Pinot Noir, and the Santa Lucia Highlands is such a special place for the variety. Its unique combination of elevation, well drained rocky soils, and moderate weather creates favorable climate conditions for Pinot Noir specifically. The timing felt right because we saw a chance to bring the same philosophy we apply to our Chardonnay into a new category, working with exceptional vineyards and committing to it at a high level, while still staying true to our signature wines.
n Rombauer Vineyards is Napa Green certified and uses solar power. For the eco-conscious traveler, what’s happening in the vineyards to ensure these lands stay healthy for the next 40 years?
We have a broader commitment to farm in a way that improves the land, creating a more resilient future. We’re really focused on soil health and building a more resilient vineyard system over time. We practice cover cropping and returning composted green waste back into the vineyards to naturally rebuild organic matter in the soil. We also use sheep grazing in certain blocks to manage vegetation reducing reliance on herbicides, which helps reduce pests through the vineyard and supports overall soil structure.
n You’re known for embracing cool tech, like those fancy optical sorters. How do you balance the “science” of winemaking with the old-school “art” of just trusting your palate?
The technology supports the science, which supports the art. Everything we do is aimed at trying to get a little more out of the vineyard and winery to increase the quality. One thing by itself may only move the quality forward with a tiny fraction, but when you combine the different technologies and sciences that support our understanding of how to grow and make better wine, you can really move the needle in terms of quality. In essence, the sum is greater than the individual part.
n You’ve mentioned that your Aussie upbringing gives you a different perspective. Does that “no worries” Australian attitude help when the pressure of a high-stakes Napa harvest kicks in?
It’s an Australian tradition to take a year off to travel the world, and it encourages a specific kind of independence when traveling the world at a young age. I did that while I was in college, and it taught me to be pragmatic under pressure. When the pressure of harvest hits, I won’t panic and I’ll say, ‘Right, how do we fix this?’
n For travelers planning a visit to Napa Valley, what’s something about Rombauer that you think they absolutely shouldn’t miss?
Everyone has to experience Rombauer’s cave tour and tasting, you walk through the caves and see exactly how we balance high-tech innovation with traditional barrel fermentation that gives our wine its signature characteristics. It’s also a great way to learn more about Rombauer’s history through this immersive experience, followed by a tasting.
For a more self-paced program, check out our by the glass program, where guests can choose a wine a la carte either by the glass or by the bottle and enjoy it at an outdoor garden table.
n What excites you most about what’s coming next?
I’m always excited at the start of the growing season through harvest when I’m rewarded by another vintage of wine. No matter what position you have within Rombauer, we are all sharing the Joy of Wine, so we take it on the road into cities across the country. We go to food and wine festivals, host signature Rombauer events called Blue Parties, host pop-up tastings and wine dinners, and more! You can learn more on our events page at Rombauer.com.

“Pour + Explore” Series Celebrates Chardonnay
Sonoma County’s celebrated wine culture takes center stage with “Pour + Explore,” a dynamic tasting series produced by Sonoma County Vintners in collaboration with sommelier Christopher Sawyer. Designed as both an education in terroir and a convivial evening out, each installment invites guests to walk, taste, and discover the region’s most expressive wines in thoughtfully curated settings.
The series continues Thursday, June 18, with “Pour + Explore: Chardonnay” at the elegant Kendall-Jackson Wine Estate & Gardens. Set among meticulously maintained gardens and a working winery estate, the evening highlights Sonoma County Chardonnay in all its stylistic range — from crisp, mineral-driven coastal bottlings to richer, oakinfluenced expressions shaped by warmer inland sites. Guests can expect a relaxed walk-around tasting format, complemented by light seasonal appetizers designed to enhance the wines rather than overshadow them.
Across each installment, Sawyer’s guiding philosophy emphasizes place-driven storytelling — helping guests connect each glass to the vineyard rows, coastal winds, volcanic soils, and generational craftsmanship behind it. The format encourages conversation as much as tasting, transforming each event into an immersive portrait of Sonoma County’s evolving wine identity.
With limited tickets and intimate settings, “Pour + Explore” continues to appeal to both curious newcomers and seasoned enthusiasts seeking a deeper understanding of California wine.

Must-See Musicals This Summer at Transcendence Theatre Company
Summer evenings in Sonoma are about to get even more unforgettable as Transcendence Theatre Company continues its milestone 15th Anniversary Season of Broadway Under the Stars with two iconic Broadway musicals set to light up the Field of Dreams stage: Ain’t Too Proud – The Life and Times of The Temptations and Mamma Mia!
Set against the breathtaking backdrop of Sonoma wine country, Broadway Under the Stars has become one of California’s most beloved live entertainment experiences — blending Broadway-caliber performances with open-air dining, local wine, and golden sunset views just steps from historic Sonoma Plaza.
The summer season kicks off with Ain’t Too Proud – The Life and Times of The Temptations, running June 12-14, June 18-21, and June 25-28. The Tony Award-winning Broadway hit chronicles the extraordinary rise of the legendary Motown group through timeless songs including “My Girl,” “Papa Was a Rolling Stone,” and “Just My Imagination.” The electrifying production brings audiences on a journey through the music, brotherhood, triumphs, and challenges that shaped one of America’s most influential musical groups.
Leading the production is acclaimed director Vasthy Mompoint, whose Broadway credits include The Prom,
The SpongeBob SquarePants Musical, and Mary Poppins, alongside choreography work for films including The Prom and WEIRD: The Al Yankovic Story. Mompoint’s recent television credits include appearances in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, The Bold and the Beautiful, and Disney Jr.’s Ariel.
The production also features an accomplished cast of Broadway and television performers, including Conroe Brooks as Otis Williams, returning to Transcendence after appearing in Hamilton and numerous television series including The Lincoln Lawyer and Sons of Anarchy. Multiaward-winning performer Kwame Michael Remy stars as Eddie Kendricks following recent touring performances celebrating the music of Prince and credits including Smokey Joe’s Café and Forever Motown. Tyrick Wilitz Jones takes on the role of Paul Williams, bringing Broadway and touring credits including Bat Out of Hell, Hairspray, and The Wiz to the stage.
Later this summer, audiences can return to the Field of Dreams for Mamma Mia! , running August 13-16, August 20-23, and August 27-30. The global smash-hit musical featuring the beloved songs of ABBA tells a joyful story of love, friendship, family, and self-discovery set on a sun-drenched Greek island. Filled with iconic hits like “Dancing Queen,” “Take a Chance on Me,” and “Super Trouper,” the production promises the ultimate feel-good summer finale.
Together, the two productions showcase the incredible range of Transcendence’s 2026 season — from soulful Motown storytelling to carefree summer nostalgia.
Broadway Bundle
To make the experience even sweeter, Transcendence Theatre Company recently introduced its new Broadway Bundle, a special ticket package for guests purchasing both Ain’t Too Proud and Mamma Mia! together. The bundle allows theatergoers to save 15% on regular ticket prices while unlocking exclusive perks including priority seating access before the general public, flexible ticket exchanges, and dedicated customer service for last-minute schedule changes.
Signature Pre-show Picnic
Beyond the performances themselves, Broadway Under the Stars is known for creating a full evening experience unique to Sonoma. Before each show, guests are invited to the company’s signature pre-show picnic beginning at 5 p.m. on the picturesque Field of Dreams lawn. The festive atmosphere features Sonoma wines, local food vendors, specialty cocktails, and live music as audiences gather beneath the evening sky before the curtain rises.
Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway, date night, girls’ trip, or memorable evening under the stars, Transcendence Theatre Company’s 2026 summer season promises world-class entertainment paired with the magic of Sonoma wine country.

Sip, Savor, and Support Music at WINEFEST
Annual Event Benefits Lake County Symphony Association, June 13
On June 13th, Library Park in the heart of Lakeport will transform into a vibrant celebration of music, wine, and community as the Lake County Symphony Association hosts its annual WINEFEST. Running from noon to 5 p.m., this long-standing tradition, now in its 20th year, is the biggest fundraiser for the symphony, and it promises a day of indulgence, creativity, and lively entertainment for visitors of all ages.
The festival is a haven for wine and beer enthusiasts. From the rolling hills and volcanic soils of Lake County, local vineyards produce some of the region’s most distinctive wines, bursting with flavors shaped by the area’s unique terroir. At WINEFEST, both home winemakers and established commercial wineries will pour tastes of their finest creations. Expect everything from crisp whites and bold reds to sparkling surprises that reflect Lake County’s adventurous spirit. Craft beer aficionados won’t be left out either— local brewers will be on hand to showcase small-batch brews perfect for sipping under the California sun.
WINEFEST is more than just tasting — it’s about giving back. The event, dubbed “Making Wine for Music,” directly supports the Lake County Symphony Association, helping to bring live classical and contemporary performances to the community. Attendees can also try their luck in the popular Wine Barrel Raffle, where two winners will each take home 24 bottles of Lake County wines, an enviable prize for any collector or casual sipper. For a personal touch, stop by the Symphony booth to meet Conductor John Parkinson, who will share stories about the symphony’s mission and the musicians who bring the music to life.
Advance tickets for wine and beer tasting are $30, or $35 at the gate, ensuring your entry into the tasting experience. But even if wine or beer isn’t your passion, WINEFEST offers plenty to enjoy. Admission is free for visitors who want to browse the arts and crafts booths, savor local food offerings, or explore the Silent Auction, featuring unique items generously donated by local businesses and symphony supporters.
Adding to the festive atmosphere, live music will provide a soundtrack for the day, creating a lively and convivial environment where neighbors, visitors, and music lovers can mingle. Families, couples, and friends are all welcome to experience the fusion of flavors, artistry, and community spirit that defines WINEFEST.
Whether you’re a seasoned wine connoisseur, a craft beer fan, or simply looking for a fun day out, WINEFEST promises a unique way to support the local symphony while celebrating Lake County’s rich food and wine culture. Don’t miss this opportunity to sip, savor, and make a difference — all in one unforgettable afternoon.

Valley of the Moon Music Festival Announces its 12th Season: POSTCARDS FROM DVOŘÁK
Each summer, the rolling vineyards and golden hills of Sonoma become the setting for one of California’s most distinctive classical music experiences. From July 11 to 26, the acclaimed Valley of the Moon Music Festival returns for its 12th season with “Postcards from Dvořák,” an inspired musical journey tracing the travels, influences and friendships of the beloved Czech composer Antonín Dvořák.
Widely recognized as Sonoma’s premier chamber music festival, Valley of the Moon has earned a national reputation for its intimate performances on historical instruments, presented with a level of artistry and storytelling that brings 19th-century music vividly to life. Under the direction of co-founders Tanya Tomkins and Eric Zivian, the festival invites audiences to hear familiar masterworks with fresh ears.
This year’s theme follows Dvořák across continents, exploring how his encounters in Prague, Vienna, London, Russia and the United States shaped his rich and expressive musical voice.
“Dvořák was deeply rooted in tradition, yet remarkably open to influences from around the world,” says Zivian. “His music reflects a profound love of life and perfectly embodies our commitment to openness, exploration and joy.”
The season unfolds through seven mainstage concerts at the Hanna Center Auditorium, beginning with “Bohemian Homeland” on July 11 and concluding with “Final Years: Going Home” on July 26. Along the way, audiences will hear works by composers who intersected with Dvořák’s
life and legacy, including Johannes Brahms, Florence Price, Harry T. Burleigh, Charles Ives and Leoš Janáček.
The festival continues its mission to broaden the classical canon by spotlighting underrepresented voices such as Austrian composer Mathilde Kralik and British composer Rebecca Clarke, placing their works in dialogue with more familiar repertoire.
Among the season’s standout performers are violinists Rachell Ellen Wong, Jennifer Frautschi, Elizabeth Blumenstock and Tien-Hsin Cindy Wu, along with Bay Area pianists Jeff LaDeur and Audrey Vardanega. The awardwinning Amizia Quartet returns as the 2026 Fellowship Quartet-in-Residence.
True to Sonoma’s spirit of hospitality, each mainstage concert concludes with a complimentary wine reception, where guests can mingle with musicians while enjoying local wines and sweeping valley views.
Beyond the concert hall, the festival offers Alfresco concerts at La Luz Center and Buena Vista Winery, a free family concert at the Sonoma Community Center, and insightful pre-concert talks curated by Harvard musicologist Kate van Orden. Admission to the La Luz Alfresco concert is pay-what-you-wish.
For music lovers seeking a festival that combines worldclass performances, cultural exploration and the pleasures of wine country, Valley of the Moon Music Festival offers a richly rewarding midsummer escape.
Tickets and passes are now available at valleyofthemoonmusicfestival.org

n SONOMA PLAZA
On Sunday, June 14, select downtown Sonoma tasting rooms will transform into a walkable celebration of two beloved grape varieties — Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, the two grapes that define the great wines of Burgundy and some of Sonoma County’s finest vineyards. From 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., “Burgun-day on the Corner D’Or” invites guests to stroll between four acclaimed tasting rooms clustered around the Sonoma Plaza — an area affectionately nicknamed the “Corner D’Or,” a playful nod to Burgundy’s famed Côte d’Or, or “Golden Slope.”
The moniker is fitting. Just steps from one another, Auteur Wines, Platt Vineyard, Three Sticks Wines, and WALT Wines are a compelling destination in California for lovers of cool-climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
Guests will sip their way through the four tasting rooms on the historic Sonoma Plaza while collecting stamps in a “passport” and discovering wines from Auteur Wines, Platt Vineyard, Three Sticks Wines, and WALT Wines. Tickets are $40 per person and include a souvenir travel glass.
The event begins with a special lunch offering at Swiss Hotel, one of Sonoma’s most enduring gathering spots. After the tasting, participants who complete their passport can present it at El Dorado Kitchen to enjoy a complimentary amuse-bouche with dinner.
Distinctive Expressions from Four Acclaimed Producers
Among the featured producers, Platt Vineyard is a highlight for anyone passionate about cool-climate wines. Located just a few miles from the Pacific Ocean on the far Sonoma Coast, the vineyard is renowned for producing Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with remarkable purity, acidity, and a vivid sense of place.
Platt’s tasting room in downtown Sonoma offers a focused, intimate experience where guests can explore wines shaped by coastal fog, Goldridge soils, and meticulous farming. The Chardonnays are
Auteur Wines is known for elegant, small-production wines crafted with a Burgundian sensibility. Its tasting salon provides a refined setting to experience nuanced Pinot Noir and Chardonnay sourced from exceptional coastal vineyards.
Three Sticks Wines combines historic charm with top-tier winemaking. Its Adobe tasting room, set in a beautifully restored 1842 landmark, offers richly textured wines that showcase some of Sonoma’s most celebrated vineyard sites.
WALT Wines has built a devoted following for its expressive Pinot Noirs from acclaimed vineyards stretching from Sonoma to the Pacific Northwest. The Sonoma tasting room is warm and welcoming, making it a favorite for both newcomers and collectors.
Whether you are a devoted Burgundy lover or simply looking for a memorable afternoon in wine country, Burgun-day on the Corner D’Or offers an ideal opportunity to taste world-class wines, explore Sonoma’s vibrant tasting rooms, and discover why Pinot Noir and Chardonnay thrive in this remarkable region.
