Winery & Vineyards

Steve Ledson comes from a long line of Sonoma County farmers and winemakers dating back to the 1860s. More than a winemaker or viticulturist, Steve is a true vigneron — the French term for one who does both, he walks the vineyards, tends each vine with sustainable, time-honored practices, and oversees every step of winemaking. His hands-on dedication yields expressive, place-driven wines that reflect the character of Sonoma. Designed and built by Steve, the iconic Castle winery is considered one of the world’s most impressive. Enjoy private and seated tastings. Reserve a table by the fireplace or in the West Oak Grove, and explore the Gourmet Marketplace’s selection of artisanal cheeses, meats, sandwiches, salads, and treats.

Perched at 2,500 feet in the Moon Mountain District, Mountain Terraces is Ledson’s dramatic Estate Vineyard known for world-class wines and sweeping views of Sonoma Valley and the Bay Area. Extreme elevation, distinctive soils, and meticulous sustainable farming create intensely expressive wines available exclusively through an annual allocation. Guests can also book guest houses with stunning vineyard and Bay Area views.

Located on the Historic Sonoma Plaza, this six-room boutique hotel was named one of the 100 Hottest New Hotals globally and one of the 9 Best Hotels in Sonoma County for Wine Tasting and Wellness Getaway by Condé Nast Traveler. LEWIS CELLARS A Winery Experience Unlike Any Other

For more than 30 years, Lewis Cellars has embodied the bold spirit of Napa Valley winemaking, crafting award-winning wines with uncompromising craftsmanship and unapologetic character.

Founded in 1992 by former professional race car driver Randy Lewis and his wife, Debbie, the couple channeled the same ambition that defined Randy’s racing career into a new pursuit – their shared passion for wine.

From the beginning, they partnered with renowned consultants including Helen Turley, Paul Hobbs, and Joe Cafaro to craft exceptional Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah sourced from some of Napa Valley’s most esteemed vineyards, including Oakville Ranch, where they were early investors.

Randy and Debbie each brought a distinct perspective to Lewis Cellars. Randy, championed the bold, expressive style that would become the winery’s signature, while Debbie contributed precision and meticulous attention to detail.

What began as a passion project quickly evolved into one of Napa Valley’s most respected wineries, culminating in their 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon being named Wine of the Year by Wine Spectator in 2016.

Wonderful Changes

Following Debbie’s passing and with Randy ready to retire, Debbie’s son, Dennis Bell, who leads winemaking operations, merged their talents with The Wonderful Company in 2021, the company behind JUSTIN Vineyards & Winery.

With the infusion of capital from The Wonderful Company, Dennis Bell explains that his life in managing the winery has become just that; “a bit wonderful.” At a recent tasting during Premiere Napa in

Vice President of Winemaking Operations Dennis Bell, President of Wine Steve Myers, Executive Chef Rachel Haggstrom, and Winemaker Jordan Jeffries

February 2026. He explained that it has been a gift to be given an opportunity to expand his wine career and have the resources to make Lewis Cellars an undeniable leader in Napa Valley.

A New Chapter

In 2023, Jordan Jeffries joined Lewis Cellars as Winemaker, working closely with Dennis and longtime Cellarmaster Arturo Garcia and Cellar Lead Sylvia Ortiz to carry forward the Lewis legacy. Lewis Cellars is now entering its newest chapter: the opening of its new estate on Napa’s famed Silverado Trail. The estate offers a heightened tasting and culinary experience that’s entirely unique to the Valley. The space is extraordinary, the ambiance one of quiet elegance and luxury while being daringly distinctive. And this luxury, much like the array of Lewis Cellars wines, is inviting and attainable. Choose from several different wine and culinary experiences, ranging from wine tastings paired with canapés to multi-course wine and food pairings to the most intimate experience – the Salon Privé customized for two by the Lewis concierge team.

For Every Palate

With a diverse selection of wines, Lewis offers something for every palate. The portfolio includes Chardonnays from several coolerclimate vineyards, Syrah – both on its own and in blends – and an array of its signature bold Cabernet Sauvignons. In tribute to Debbie Lewis, every guest is greeted with a glass of her favorite wine, Lewis Sauvignon Blanc.

The tasting room offers a fully immersive indoor-outdoor experience, designed to be explored in the same way guests enjoy a bottle of Lewis wine – slowly, with each layer revealing something new over time.

With MICHELIN-starred Chef Rachel Haggstrom leading the culinary program, alongside Estate Chef Christophe Gerard, every visit promises an unforgettable pairing of exceptional wines and inspired cuisine. Add Lewis Cellars to your Napa Valley visit and discover a new escape built on a rich and storied legacy.

BERINGER VINEYARDS

Celebrating its 150th Anniversary

Beringer Vineyards, California’s longest continuously operating winery, marks its 150th year with a calendar of immersive experiences, seasonal festivities, and participation in marquee wine events across the country.

Founded in 1876 by brothers Jacob and Frederick Beringer, Beringer Vineyards in St. Helena has been a cornerstone of Napa Valley winemaking for nearly a century and a half. The estate, renowned for its gravityfed winemaking system, was one of the early pioneers to craft wines in caves carved directly into the hillside — a technique that provides consistent temperature and humidity ideal for aging. In 1934, Beringer became the first local winery to open its doors for public tours, setting a standard for hospitality that helped define the modern Napa Valley wine tourism experience.

“From the earliest days of the winery to today, each generation has built upon the vision of those who came before,” said Margo Van Staaveren, Director of Winemaking at Beringer Vineyards. “Our focus remains on crafting wines that honor our long-established sites while evolving with intention, innovation, and a deep sense of place that comes from calling this estate home for 150 years.” Today, visitors can taste that legacy firsthand, exploring a portfolio that spans iconic Cabernet Sauvignons, Chardonnays, and limitedproduction library wines.

Beringer’s milestone year follows a period of global recognition. In 2025, the winery was named among the World’s 50 Best Vineyards 2025 : 51-100, received a Tripadvisor Travelers’ Choice Award for the Top 10% of Things to Do Worldwide, won Best Wine Tour in the Best of Napa County Awards, and earned placement on James Suckling’s Top 100 Wines of the USA . These accolades underscore not only the quality of Beringer’s wines but also the immersive experiences it offers guests.

Visiting Beringer is as much about the estate as it is about the wines. Guests can explore the historic Rhine House, with its ornate architecture and sweeping views of the vineyards, or wander the underground caves where the winery’s signature vintages mature. Guided tours provide a behind-the-scenes look at winemaking techniques and the rich history of the estate, while tasting experiences — from intimate, curated flights to more expansive estate tours — offer opportunities to savor wines in settings that reflect both elegance and authenticity. Seasonal offerings often include food pairings, barrel tastings, and private experiences designed to bring the vineyard’s story to life.

“Our 150th anniversary is an open invitation to experience Beringer in new ways,” said Claire Wilkins, Director of Hospitality. “We’re proud to share this momentous occasion with all our guests this year, including several cornerstone events, with additional experiential offerings yet to be announced. This is a can’t-miss milestone, and we are thrilled to welcome visitors to celebrate with us.”

The anniversary coincides with the 150th anniversary of the City of St. Helena, where Beringer was recently named Business of the Year. For wine enthusiasts and history buffs alike, Beringer Vineyards offers not only a taste of world-class wines but also a living connection to the heritage of Napa Valley.

Q&A :

La Crema Winery’s Head Winemaker Craig McAllister chats with Allan Cates

■ Can you share a little bit about your past? What led you to be where are today?

I was born and raised in New Zealand. I spent many years working in hotels as a wine steward, where I first gained exposure to the world of wine. Like many New Zealanders, I traveled and lived in the UK for several years, but it was upon my return to New Zealand that I enrolled at college to study viticulture and Enology. During that time, I worked harvests in New Zealand and spent my summers working in vineyard development. At the conclusion of my studies, I worked harvests in New Zealand and Australia before my first harvest at La Crema in 2007, followed by further harvests in Chile, New Zealand and Cyprus.I returned to California and La Crema in 2009 and have been here since. In 2017, I was promoted to head winemaker and have thoroughly enjoyed the last 9-10 years in the role.

From the rolling vineyards of New Zealand to the cool-climate coastlines of California, Craig McAllister has spent decades shaping a career defined by precision, passion, and a deep respect for terroir. Born and raised in New Zealand, he discovered a love for wine early while working in hotels as a wine steward — a spark that would ignite a lifelong journey through viticulture and enology. After studying and working harvests across New Zealand, Australia, Chile, and Cyprus, he joined La Crema in 2007, steadily rising through the ranks to become Head Winemaker in 2017.

Under his guidance, La Crema has received national recognition, including Wine Enthusiast’s 2024 “American Winery of the Year” award, and accolades for sustainability initiatives that reflect a commitment not just to great wine, but to responsible stewardship of the land. Known for a meticulous balance of science and intuition, he carefully navigates the challenges and rewards of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, crafting wines that express both the vineyard’s personality and La Crema’s signature style.

In this conversation, Craig shares insights on winemaking, sustainability, innovation, and the guiding principles that will shape the next decade at La Crema.

■ In November 2024, Wine Enthusiast Magazine named La Crema Winery ‘American Winery of the Year’. What was your first reaction when the announcement was made?

My first reaction was equal parts gratitude and pride. This distinction is an extraordinary honor, and it immediately brought to mind the dedication of the many individuals who contribute to La Crema’s success — our vineyard and cellar teams, our sales and marketing teams, and everyone who works tirelessly to uphold the quality and integrity of our wines.

On a personal level, the announcement was both humbling and affirming. We have long been committed to craftsmanship, to the expression of cool- climate vineyards, and to a culture of continuous improvement. To have these efforts recognized at a national level by such a respected publication is truly meaningful. The award reflects not only the work of today, but the legacy and commitment that have guided La Crema since 1979.

CRAIG M CALLISTER

■ Can you walk us through your decision-making process during harvest? What vineyard signals matter most to you when determining picking dates for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay?

There is a lot to consider when making a pick decision, at times the decision is straight-forward and at others it can be stressful because we get one shot at getting it right. For me the most important signal is what do the grapes taste like? That, ultimately, is the overriding factor when deciding to pick. I’ll also assess the condition of the vine and have an idea of the weather forecast for the next 7-10 days, it might be better to bring it in before a heat spike or if there is rain coming. I’m also thinking about what it will taste like in 3, 5 or 7 days because I might need to push the pick out and will need to revisit the vineyard within that window. I have been calling picks on some of these vineyards for 15-plus years – so you do build empirical knowledge of how vineyards and blocks ripen but you need to stay present and vigilant because things can change very quickly.

■ Pinot Noir is often described as transparent and unforgiving. What do you find to be the most challenging and most rewarding things about working with this grape year after year?

For me, the greatest challenges working with Pinot Noir often stem from the things we have no control over, namely climate. Pinot Noir can accumulate sugar very rapidly when it’s close to harvest. In these moments the sugar loading often outpaces physiological ripening and forces your hand to pick. I’m sure that I am not alone in being left forlorn after a heat spike drove sugars up quickly. But Pinot Noir can also be incredibly rewarding, I love seeing its progression from ripening on the vine, to tasting it as it ferments and then before and during barrel maturation. It tends to show its inherent quality on the vine and so long as we steward it through fermentation and don’t try to force a style – it can and does make fantastic wines that can be both elegant and intense and truly representative of the vineyard or appellation in which they are grown – perhaps more so than any other grape we work with. Ultimately, when everybody’s hard work, care and attention aligns and you taste your Pinot Noir with your team, your friends or consumers and everyone is nodding in agreement and having that “oh yeah” moment that is what makes Pinot Noir so rewarding.

■ While Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are the icons, La Crema has seen success with Pinot Gris, Rosé, Sauvignon Blanc, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Is there a particular varietal you are currently experimenting with that you think will be the "next big thing" for cool-climate enthusiasts?

In 2026, La Crema will offer two new wines, these have been our new product focus for the last 18 months. In January 2026, we released our Light Pinot Noir (9% alcohol & 90 calories per serving). As the name suggests, this is a lighter offering yet made with the same care and quality first focus as our more traditional wines.

In spring, we will release a mixed white blend. This wine not only celebrates our partnership with the WNBA but also meets growing demand for fresher, lighter and brighter wines styles. The blend is made largely from Albariño, Chenin Blanc, Grenache Blanc and French Colombard … it also includes smaller amounts of Assyrtiko, Malvasia, Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay. I am excited for this wine; it is deliciously fresh and vibrant and a wonderful addition to our family of wines.

This wine will be showcased as the first co-branded wine with the WNBA, released ahead of the 2026 season tip-off.

■ You joined La Crema in 2007 as a Harvest Enologist and moved through several roles before becoming Head Winemaker in 2017. What is your primary “North Star” for the next decade of winemaking at the winery?

For me, our North Star for the next decade is staying committed to expressive, site - driven wines while continuing to evolve how we farm and craft them. La Crema was built on the idea that cool-climate vineyards have an incredible story to tell, and my focus is on ensuring we’re honoring those sites more deeply every year.

That means pushing further into precision — both in the vineyard and the cellar — so that every decision we make, from pruning to picking to barrel selection, is about capturing the nuance of place. At the same time, sustainability is central to our future. The next decade will be defined by how effectively we adapt to climate variability and how responsibly we steward our land and resources.

Ultimately, my guiding principle is to make wines that remain unmistakably La Crema: vibrant, balanced, and reflective of the coastlines we farm, but with even greater clarity, resilience, and intention. If we can continue elevating that sense of place while caring for the people and the environment that make it possible, then we’re moving in exactly the right direction.”

St. Francis Winery & Vineyards Named Official Wine Partner of the Golden State Storm for the Team's Inaugural Season

St. Francis Winery & Vineyards and the Golden State Storm recently announced an official wine partnership, bringing together two Northern California originals that share a common heartbeat: a passion for craft, community, and the authentic stories born from this iconic region.

The partnership launched in March to coincide with the Golden State Storm’s inaugural season opener on March 28, 2026 at Laney Field in Oakland, CA. With the timing falling during Women’s History Month, both organizations welcome the opportunity to celebrate the women who help define them. As the Storm takes the field for the first time, St. Francis Winery & Vineyards is proud to be there from day one as the team’s first Official Wine Partner.

Rooted in Real. Rooted in Region.

St. Francis Winery & Vineyards has spent more than five decades crafting wines that speak to place and people. Their philosophy, Rooted in Real, is more than a campaign slogan. It is a commitment to authenticity: real soil, real seasons, and real stories. At the heart of that commitment is an exceptional winemaking team led by Katie Madigan and Chris Louton, whose combined artistry, precision, and dedication have helped define one of Sonoma Valley’s most celebrated wineries. Together, they bring an uncompromising standard of craft to every vintage, and it shows in every glass.

The Golden State Storm, rooted in the Bay Area, was founded on the belief that women’s football belongs on the big stage. Competing in both tackle and flag football as part of the Women’s National Football Conference (WNFC), the world’s fastest growing women’s football league, the Storm are more than a team — they are a movement. Built on Oakland’s grit and Northern California’s bold identity, the Storm is for athletes who refuse to play small, bringing the same sense of “real” to the field that St. Francis brings to the bottle.

Additional collaborative programming and community activations are planned throughout the season, further deepening the connection between Wine Country and the greater Bay Area.

“Making wine and playing football share more than people realize — both demand precision, patience, and an unrelenting commitment to focus and finesse. What excites me most about this partnership is what it represents: two brands rooted in those same values, coming together to champion the women who are shaping the future of their industries. This is exactly the kind of collaboration I’m proud to be a part of,” said Camille Lunt-Bisbey, Director of Consumer Sales & Marketing, St. Francis Winery & Vineyards.

A New Chapter for Henry Belmonte ROCKPILE BOURBON Five Years in the Making

Bourbon might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Henry Belmonte. In Sonoma Valley, he’s best known for the places where people gather: VJB Cellars, Wellington Cellars, and Kenwood Ranch. Spaces built around wine, food, and the kind of hospitality that has long defined the Belmonte family story.

When Henry mentioned a bourbon project to me about a year ago, I was curious to learn more about what had been quietly developing behind the scenes. As it turns out, the story had actually begun several years earlier.

When we sat down to talk about it, Henry described the project not as a business decision, but as something much more personal.

“I’ve always appreciated great bourbon,” he said. “Over time, the idea of creating something of our own started to take shape.”

The project began more than five years ago alongside Paul Tauro, a close friend back east who shared the same appreciation for patience, craftsmanship, and doing things the right way. From the beginning, the goal wasn’t speed, it was character.

A natural extension of the Belmonte philosophy: Take your time, build thoughtfully, and create something meant to be shared.

Henry’s daughter, Brie, has been closely working alongside him, and as Rockpile starts to take shape, she brings a new perspective while continuing the family tradition of building experiences centered around intention and connection.

For her, being part of the project has been both meaningful and full circle.

“Getting to work with my dad on RPB has been really special,” she said. “I’ve watched him work extremely hard to provide for my family and I see the passion he puts into everything he does. Helping bring something like Rockpile to life has been such a meaningful way to contribute to the next chapter of our family’s story.”

She continued, “I’ve also really enjoyed learning about bourbon! Living in Austin, I definitely appreciate a good drink and good conversation, and I think our bourbon would fit right in here, too.”

“Wine will always be at the heart of our family story, but Rockpile was an opportunity to honor a personal passion while still staying true to where we come from,” Henry noted.

Henry Belmonte (left) speaks with the VJB and Wellington Cellars winemaker, Tom Foster, during a visit to the distillery, discussing production logistics for the Rockpile Bourbon project.

Taking inspiration from the rugged Rockpile AVA in Sonoma County, RPB was initially distilled in Indiana and aged for five years in American oak. The spirit later made its way west, where Henry added a special twist that reflected his background – a 30-day finish in Montepulciano and Sangiovese wine barrels.

“We wanted to bring a West Coast perspective to it, and give our bourbon a sense of adventure. Something that reflects our style, and a subtle connection to our roots. Adding that really unique color and profile without losing what makes bourbon admirable.”

On the nose, vanilla, toasted oak, and warm caramel open into hints of cherry and raspberry. The palate reveals classic bourbon sweetness – brown sugar and toffee layered with notes of plum and black cherry – while subtle tannins add depth and structure. The finish is long and warming, with lingering notes of dark chocolate, seasoned oak, and dried fruit.

Like many things Henry creates, Rockpile Bourbon is not meant to feel overly formal or exclusive. It’s meant to be shared.

“ Wine will always be at the heart of our family story, but Rockpile was an opportunity to honor a personal passion while still staying true to where we come from.”

“It’s rugged and authentic. Made for every table. Everything we wanted this bourbon to be.”

Having only learned about the project within the past year, it’s been exciting to watch it come to life. Though bourbon has never really been my drink of choice!

Let it be known I love the family and may be biased ... but I do have to say … it’s really good. Rich, smooth, and thoughtfully crafted – the kind of bourbon that even someone like me can genuinely appreciate.

And maybe that’s the beauty of it. Like everything the Belmonte’s create, it feels approachable, meant to be shared, and grounded in the same sense of hospitality that has always brought people together around their table.

Rockpile Bourbon is now available for purchase in person at Wellington Cellars or available for pre-order through the Rockpile Bourbon website. A Rockpile Bourbon tasting experience is also on the horizon, but until then, their doors are always open.

If you find yourself in Sonoma Valley, come see us.

As Brie puts it: “Rockpile was made for the many.”

Fifty Years of Duckhorn Vineyards

The Napa Valley winery that helped define American Merlot is celebrating a half-century of winemaking, leadership, and enduring influence.

For half a century, Duckhorn Vineyards has been guided by a simple belief: that great wines are shaped by place, patience, and the people who care for them. Few wineries illustrate this philosophy more clearly than Duckhorn Vineyards’ long relationship with Merlot — a grape its founders believed could produce wines of elegance, structure, and longevity in Napa Valley.

Dan and Margaret Duckhorn founded Duckhorn Vineyards in 1976 at a moment when California wine was still finding its voice. From the beginning, their vision was rooted in thoughtful farming, a sense of hospitality, and a conviction that Napa Valley could stand confidently among the world’s great wine regions.

Dan Duckhorn, who passed away in February, brought a vineyard-driven mindset to the young winery, championing site-specific plantings and modern trellising systems at a formative time for Napa Valley. The late Margaret Duckhorn helped shape the culture surrounding the wines, emphasizing generosity at the table and the idea that wine’s greatest purpose is to bring people together. Their belief in Merlot would prove especially influential. When the Duckhorns first began championing the variety, it was not seen as a flagship grape in Napa Valley. But Dan was captivated by its character.

“I liked the softness, the seductiveness, the color, the fact that it went with a lot of different foods,” he once said. “It seemed to me to be a wonderful wine to just enjoy.” That early conviction shaped what would become the most respected

Merlot program in North America. Since its inaugural 1978 vintage, Duckhorn Vineyards has played a defining role in elevating the reputation of the variety, particularly through the famed Three Palms Vineyard, widely regarded as one of world’s benchmark Merlot sites.

Over the decades, the Duckhorns also helped shape the broader wine community. Both Dan and Margaret served in leadership roles with Napa Valley Vintners and the Wine Institute, contributing to the collaborative culture and standards that continue to guide California wine today.

A legacy built vintage by vintage continues under the careful guidance of winemaker Renée Ary.

Continuity has also been a defining thread in the Duckhorn Vineyards story. Current Winemaker Renée Ary joined Duckhorn Vineyards in 2003. Over the next two decades she moved from assistant winemaker to associate winemaker before becoming just the fourth winemaker in the winery’s history in 2014 — a rise that reflected experience earned quietly vintage after vintage.

Ary’s first vintage carried particular weight. When her debut 2014 Three Palms Vineyard Merlot was named Wine Spectator’s “Wine of the Year,” the recognition felt like an affirmation of the philosophy she had spent years learning. A few years later, the 2019 Monitor Ledge Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon was named Wine Enthusiast’s “Wine of the Year,” demonstrating that the winery’s approach could flourish well beyond a single vineyard or variety.

“Duckhorn’s rich history is something you feel every day when you work here,” Ary said. “The standards that were set decades ago — respect for the land, attention to detail, and a belief in elegance and balance — are the reason our wines continue to resonate today.”

Today, the people-driven culture of Duckhorn Vineyards is as impressive as its wines. In both 2025 and 2026, not only was Duckhorn Vineyards certified as a Great Place to Work®, last year the company introduced a broadbased employee ownership program to reward its valued employees while cementing the collaborative spirit that has long been the key to the winery’s success.

“Fifty years is an extraordinary milestone, but what makes it truly meaningful is how Duckhorn Vineyards has sustained its values while continuing to grow and lead,” said CEO Robert Hanson. “Our 50th anniversary is an important reminder that we are stewards of something truly exceptional.”

As Duckhorn Vineyards marks its 50th anniversary throughout 2026, the celebration includes special tastings at Duckhorn Vineyards and at The Duckhorn Collection at Paraduxx. Throughout the year, the winery is also sharing stories that reflect the people, vineyards, and values behind five decades of winemaking through its 50 Stories website.

For those who wish to experience the wines of Duckhorn Vineyards firsthand, the winery will be offering special 50th anniversary tastings at Duckhorn Vineyards, as well as at The Duckhorn Collection at Paraduxx.

Savor the Experiences at Priest Ranch

Nestled in the charming town of Yountville, the Priest Ranch Tasting Room offers bold and playful ways to experience Napa Valley wines. While the estate vineyards stretch high above St. Helena on Sage Canyon Road, guests are greeted in Yountville with an intimate, lively space … where expressive wines, imaginative pairings, and storytelling combine to create an unforgettable introduction to the land and the people behind it.

With creative tasting experiences designed to bring that terroir vividly to life, the most talked about is the Bacon Tasting — an indulgent pairing that has become something of a signature. Thick-cut, artisan bacon arrives in a flight of different flavors, each carefully matched with Priest Ranch wines. Smoky, sweet, and savory notes weave seamlessly with bold reds, creating a pairing that feels both decadent and surprisingly nuanced. It’s a Napa tasting that feels less formal and more like a delicious discovery.

Then there’s the intriguingly named Taste the Terroir (Eat Dirt) Tasting. While no actual soil is involved, the experience is a playful exploration of how the earth itself influences the wines through an artisan chocolate pairing. Guests sample several expressions from the estate while learning about the diverse soils, elevations, and microclimates that shape each bottle. Individual chocolate truffles by Kollar Chocolates are inspired by the soil of the Estate to accompany the wines, helping illustrate how terroir moves from vineyard to glass.

Both tastings explore an epicurean element while providing a glimpse into the wild beauty of Somerston Estate, a property rarely open to the public but central to Priest Ranch’s identity. That connection comes fully to life each spring during Uncorked! at the Estate, an annual celebration held at Somerston itself. Whether enjoyed in the tasting room or high in the hills at Somerston Estate, a visit with Priest Ranch captures a different side of Napa Valley — one that celebrates bold flavors, rugged landscapes, and the stories that grow from the soil.

Priest Ranch Expands into the East Bay with The Storyteller Room at The Hideout Kitchen

Priest Ranch Winery has expanded its hospitality footprint beyond wine country with the debut of The Storyteller Room at The Hideout Kitchen. The collaberation introduces The Storyteller Room, presented by Priest Ranch — a dedicated private hospitality space within the restaurant and year-round East Bay home for Priest Ranch wines. The space brings Priest Ranch’s terroir-driven wines and hospitality ethos east to Lafayette, creating a new setting where guests can enjoy thoughtfully paired food and wine experiences with cuisine from The Hideout Kitchen.

The Kitchen at Priest Ranch

Cooking with Intention: Nicki Sizemore in St. Helena

The kitchen can be many things: a place of nourishment, creativity — and sometimes stress. Cookbook author and culinary educator Nicki Sizemore believes it can be something deeper: a daily practice of intention.

Sizemore recently visited New West KnifeWorks St. Helena on Main Street for a book signing celebrating her new cookbook Mind, Body, Spirit, Food, accompanied by a wine tasting from Aperture Cellars. Guests gathered over wine and conversation around a philosophy that resonated deeply with Napa Valley’s community of food lovers.

After more than two decades as a professional chef, recipe developer, and author, Sizemore began rethinking the role cooking plays in daily life.

“It’s less about the end result,” she says. “It’s actually about the practice — and how we can imbue this thing we have to do, feeding ourselves, with more intention and presence and joy.”

Her book pairs adaptable recipes with grounding meditations — small rituals meant to transform cooking from a rushed obligation into a moment of connection.

“The practice itself — that’s where the magic lies,” she explains. “That’s where the pleasure is.”

Tools can play a role in that ritual as well. Sizemore regularly cooks with a Santoku from New West KnifeWorks and says she doesn’t enter her kitchen without it.

“They talk about the knife as a tool for connection, for

pleasure, for beauty in the kitchen — which is 100 percent aligned with the mission behind my work,” she says.

“It’s become my go-to happy place. When life feels bonkers, pulling out that knife reminds me to pause. It’s like saying, ‘Okay, let’s just be here. Let’s cook.’”

Visitors strolling Main Street in St. Helena can experience that philosophy firsthand at New West KnifeWorks — where beautifully crafted knives invite cooks to transform everyday kitchen chores into joyful intention.

Wine Lovers are invited to

Celebrate Down to Earth Month

April in wine country means longer days, vibrant vineyards and special experiences that connect visitors to the land and the people who steward it. It’s also California Wines Down to Earth Month, a statewide celebration showcasing the people, practices and experiences behind California wine.

Sustainability isn’t just a buzzword here — it’s the standard. Today 90% of the state’s wine is made in a certified sustainable winery, and 65% of all vineyard acreage is certified sustainable, reflecting decades of innovation in environmentally and socially responsible farming and winemaking.

Ways to Celebrate Across Wine Country

Throughout April, wineries are opening their doors to immersive, sustainability-focused experiences — from vineyard hikes and tractor tours to garden walks and tasting room tastings that connect grapes, soil and community. For details and updates, explore events at DiscoverCaliforniaWines.com.

Here are just a few standout experiences that invite visitors not only to taste the wines but see sustainability in action.

Benziger Family Winery offers its Biodynamic Tractor Tour, a journey across the mountain estate to discover sheep-grazed vineyards, pollinator habitats and composting systems before ending with a wine tasting. On April 25 the winery hosts a handson Pressed Flower Workshop where sustainability, creativity, and wine come together.

At Wheeler Farms , the Culinary Garden Walk & Tasting includes a tour of the culinary gardens and vineyards, followed by an educational tasting of JH Wheeler’s limited-production, vineyarddesignate Cabernet series, paired with chef-curated cheese and charcuterie.

Rodney Strong Vineyards , Certified Sustainable by the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance, is known for carbonneutral certification and fish-friendly farming practices that protect watershed ecosystems. On April 18, it hosts the Decadence Party – A Taste of Temptation, showcasing smalllot estate wines and thoughtful pairings with a nod to old-world glamour.

More engaging and educational experiences across the state:

In Paso Robles, Tablas Creek Vineyard offers a vineyard tour focused on regenerative organic farming, followed by a tasting. On April 26, a Blending Seminar with Proprietor Jason Haas and Director of Winemaking Chelsea Franchi includes barrel samples and the opportunity to create your own blend.

In Livermore Valley, Concannon Vineyard integrates water-saving irrigation technology and solar-powered monitoring systems as part of its sustainable vineyard management. On April 19, guests can explore the estate during the Estate Blocks E-Bike Tour, a guided ride through exclusive vineyard blocks followed by a tasting flight and personal charcuterie box.

In northern Santa Barbara County’s Santa Maria Valley, Presqu’ile Winery invites guests to hop in their Polaris offroad vehicle for a private tour across 73 acres of sustainably farmed vineyard. Taste wines among the vines, learn about their regenerative practices, and meet their resident Kune Kune pigs (if you’re lucky). The experience concludes with a seasonal picnic by the lily pond, prepared by Estate Chef Julie Simon.

Spring Picnics, Rediscovered

With warmer weather and longer light, many wineries see guests trading quick tastings for bottles shared at picnic tables, garden terraces and vineyard-view lawns. Visitors can search the Discover California Wines winery directory for properties with picnic facilities and download the free Life’s a Picnic in California Wine Country ebook for wine-friendly recipes. It’s an easy way to turn a visit into something more relaxed and memorable.

Why It Matters (and Why It’s Worth the Trip)

These experiences — and dozens more offered in April — are living examples of California’s leadership in sustainable winegrowing, with certified acreage up more than 88% since 2018. Down to Earth Month is a reminder that the wines of California are crafted with a long view — protecting resources and supporting communities for generations to come.

Cover Crops, Compost & Chickens: Everyday Sustainability in the Vineyard

On Earth Day, it’s easy to focus on eco buzzwords and headline-grabbing initiatives like carbon offsets, electric fleets, and LEED-certified tasting rooms. Yet in wine country, some of the most meaningful environmental work happens quietly between the vine rows. Every day. And it has for decades — long before anyone spoke of “net-zero pledges.”

While large-scale climate efforts are vital, many growers have long practiced organic, regenerative, and even Demeter

Cover Crops: Green Between the Vines

In winter and spring, vineyards plant mixes like clover, vetch, favas, peas, mustard, and native grasses to reduce erosion and runoff, and to build organic matter and soil structure. Healthy soil supports beneficial insects (good bugs!) and pollinators, and improves water-holding capacity for dry months.

Compost: Turning Winery Waste into Soil Nutrition

Skins, stems, and seeds from harvest can be composted and returned to the vineyard to feed soil microbes and boost vine resilience. It reduces dependence on synthetic fertilizers, improves moisture retention, and helps store carbon in the soil.

Certified Biodynamic® farming simply as a way of life. Their philosophy is straightforward: let the vineyard lead. Get that right, and the alchemy between terroir and grape truly shines. This Earth Day, as you raise a glass from wine country, consider what’s happening beneath the surface. A wine’s character begins not in the cellar, but in living soil — nurtured by cover crops, compost, and perhaps even a few busy chickens!

Chickens & Sheep: Natural Weed and Pest Control

Some estates bring animals, like chickens and sheep, into the vineyard to graze cover crops (less mowing/tractor use) and to scratch up pests and weed seeds. This practice adds gentle, natural fertility, and strengthens biodiversity in the vineyard system.

Water Wisdom

From drip irrigation to soil moisture monitoring and improved infiltration, smart water practices help vineyards stay productive with less. By carefully managing every drop, growers protect precious resources, strengthen vine resilience, and support healthier soils that sustain quality grapes year after year.

Earth Day Sip Tip

Choose a bottle from a producer who farms with soil health and biodiversity in mind—because great wine starts with living ground.

POINT REYES FARMSTEAD CHEESE

Where Coastal Beauty Meets Artisan Craft

Just an hour north of San Francisco, where the Pacific meets the rolling pastures of West Marin, Point Reyes Farmstead Cheese Company invites visitors to experience the story behind awardwinning cheese. This isn’t just a place to buy cheese. It’s a chance to see where it’s made, meet the cows who produce the milk, and taste the difference that sustainable farming makes.

Four Generations of Farming, One Family Vision

Since 1959, the Giacomini family has been farming these 710 acres overlooking Tomales Bay. In 2000, four sisters transformed their parents’ conventional dairy into something remarkable: an artisan cheese company where they raise their own herd, produce their own milk, and craft every wheel by hand. Today, Point Reyes cheeses grace tables at acclaimed restaurants nationwide and have been featured on Oprah's Favorite Things. But the best way to experience them is at the farm, where the story begins.

Sustainability You Can See

A walk through the coastal pastures reveals why sustainability isn’t just a buzzword at Point Reyes. It’s how the Giacominis have farmed for 66 years. The cows graze on diverse grasses that pull carbon from the air and store it in the soil. Rotational grazing keeps the land healthy and productive. Every spring, the farm harvests coastal rye grasses to feed the herd through California’s dry summer months. A quarter of what the cows eat comes directly from this land, making the cheese a true expression of place.

The commitment extends beyond the pastures. A methane digester converts farm waste into renewable energy, powering 50% of operations. Solar panels handle the rest. Water is carefully conserved and recycled. Nothing goes to waste. It's a closed-loop system that respects both the land and the community.

Visit The Fork Marketplace & Experiences

The Fork, the farm’s culinary and educational center, is the gateway to the Point Reyes experience. Stop by The Fork Marketplace, open Monday through Saturday, to explore the full selection of award-winning cheeses. With production locations on the farm and in nearby Petaluma, the Point Reyes Farmstead product line contains Original Blue, Bay Blue, Fennel Blue, Toma, TomaProvence, TomaTruffle, TomaRashi, Gouda, Quinta, Truffle Brie and Brie. Knowledgeable staff guide visitors through tasting notes and pairing suggestions.

Beyond cheese, the Marketplace offers local artisan products, carefully selected cheese accompaniments, and everything needed for an unforgettable Wine Country picnic. Sweeping views of Tomales Bay and the pastoral farm provide the perfect backdrop for browsing.

Throughout the year, Point Reyes hosts a variety of farm-totable experiences including guided tastings, seasonal chefcurated lunches, and special events that bring visitors closer to where their food comes from. The website features a calendar of upcoming experiences where guests can reserve their spot.

A Taste of Place

Wine Country is known for its commitment to terroir, the sense of place that makes each vintage unique. Point Reyes Farmstead brings that same philosophy to cheese. The fog that rolls in from the Pacific, the coastal grasses the cows graze, the careful stewardship of land that’s sustained the Giacomini family for four generations, it all comes together in every wheel.

Whether planning a romantic getaway, a family outing, or simply seeking an authentic agritourism experience during a Wine Country visit, Point Reyes Farmstead offers a chance to see where great cheese begins.

Pour + Explore Pinot Noir Tasting at Bricoleur Vineyards

Presented by Sonoma County Vintners, April 23

Few wines capture the romance of Sonoma County quite like Pinot Noir. Elegant yet expressive, the grape has found an ideal home in the diverse landscapes of Sonoma County, where cool coastal fog, rolling hills, and a patchwork of soils create the perfect conditions for crafting some of California’s most compelling versions of this famously delicate variety.

That diversity will be on full display Thursday, April 23, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., during a lively walk-around tasting at Bricoleur Vineyards. Produced by Sonoma County Vintners in collaboration with Sommelier Christopher Sawyer, the evening invites guests to sip, swirl, and explore outstanding Pinot Noir from more than 30 Sonoma County vintners.

Pinot Noir thrives in Sonoma County largely because of its remarkable range of microclimates. Vineyards along the coast benefit from cooling Pacific fog and winds, producing wines with bright acidity and vibrant red fruit. Further inland, slightly warmer pockets allow the grape to develop deeper flavors and supple textures. The result is a spectrum of styles — from delicate and floral to rich and layered — all tied together by Pinot Noir’s hallmark elegance.

Guests at the tasting will have the rare opportunity to compare wines from several of the county’s renowned Pinot-producing areas, including the Russian River Valley, Sonoma Coast, and Sonoma Valley. Each appellation brings its own signature character: Russian River Valley Pinots often showcase lush cherry and raspberry notes; Sonoma Coast wines can be more structured and mineral-driven; while Sonoma Valley expressions frequently offer silky texture and savory complexity.

Beyond the glass, the setting promises an equally memorable experience. Surrounded by gardens and

vineyards, Bricoleur Vineyards is known for its welcoming hospitality and culinary focus. Throughout the evening, guests will enjoy a generous grazing station created by the estate’s culinary team led by Executive Chef Todd Knoll, featuring seasonal bites designed to complement the wines.

The relaxed walk-around format encourages conversation with winemakers and fellow wine lovers alike, making it easy to discover new favorites and gain a deeper appreciation for Sonoma County’s Pinot Noir legacy.

Tickets are $75 per person (plus tax and service fee). All attendees must be 21 or older. Please note this is a pet-free event, though trained service animals are welcome.

For Pinot enthusiasts and curious tasters alike, it’s an evening that promises a true taste of Sonoma County in every glass.

Dating back to 1963, when NVWL pioneered the first wine tasting open to the general public in Napa Valley, this annual event has been a cornerstone of the region's wine culture, taking place nearly every year. This 62nd celebration features 50 esteemed wineries.

Wineries from every decade since the sixties plus over 20 that have never poured before will offer current releases and library wines accompanied by La Saison Napa’s striking seasonal fare. Additionally, a silent auction features a curated selection of wines in regular and large formats as well as tasting experiences tailored to the winning bidder.

What sets this tasting apart is its personal touch, with many wines poured by their winemakers, offering enthusiasts a unique opportunity to engage and learn from the experts.

Established in 1973 by revered figures in the local food and wine scene, including author MFK Fisher, marketing pioneer Francis “Paco” Gould of “Bottles and Bins”, letterpress printer and artist Jim Beard, and UC Davis Professor Maynard Amerine, Napa Valley Wine Library has been dedicated to conserving and sharing the rich stories of Napa Valley's wines and vines, as well as wine country worldwide.Housed in its dedicated wing within the St. Helena Public Library, the Napa Valley Wine Library Collection is an invaluable resource open to all – from wine professionals and their interns, to growers, designers, journalists, photographers, and artists - fostering a deep appreciation for the art and science of wine within our culture, society, and daily life.

TASTE Alexander Valley: Back to Our Roots

Complimentary Tastings and a Welcoming Approach to Wine Country

This April, Alexander Valley Winegrowers invite wine lovers — both new and experienced — to slow down, sip freely, and reconnect with the heart of wine country during TASTE Alexander Valley: Back to Our Roots, a month-long celebration of wine, hospitality, and genuine connection.

Running throughout the entire month of April, TASTE Alexander Valley offers a rare opportunity to experience the region without the usual barriers of tasting fees. Participating wineries will provide complimentary tastings, welcoming guests to explore at their own pace while engaging directly with the growers, winemakers, and owners who define Alexander Valley.

Participating Wineries

Participating wineries include ACTA Wine, Silver Oak Cellars, Alexander Valley Vineyards, Trione Vineyards & Winery, Bedarra Vineyards, Lampson Family Wines, La Cienega Vineyard, Ramazzotti Wines, Mercury Wine, Robert Young Estate Winery, Stuhlmuller Vineyards, J Rickards Winery, and more.

Notably, some participating wineries are not typically open to the public, making TASTE Alexander Valley a rare opportunity to enjoy intimate tasting experiences and behind-the-scenes perspectives that are seldom available outside of this month-long event.

Wine 101 for the Next Generation

As part of its commitment to welcoming new wine drinkers, TASTE Alexander Valley is also introducing a Wine 101 crash course designed specifically for college-age and Gen Z guests of legal drinking age. Hosted at Silver Oak Cellars on Saturday, April 11th, this complimentary experience pairs a local sommelier with a vine-to-bottle immersion that is approachable, inclusive, and intentionally not snobby. Participants will learn the basics of wine — how it’s made, how to taste it, and most importantly, how to understand what they like — without pressure or pretense.

Signature Experiences

In addition to complimentary tastings throughout the valley, TASTE Alexander Valley features curated experiences designed to deepen visitors’ connection to the region. Highlights include vintner pop-ups at local restaurants and hotels, an interactive tasting map, and a special WinemakerHosted Dinner at The Matheson on Saturday, April 18 — bringing together Alexander Valley wines and exceptional cuisine for an intimate evening in downtown Healdsburg.

The Napa Valley Auction Weekend is in a Rarified League – Here’s Why

Auction Napa Valley is the signature event organized by the Napa Valley Vintners association (NVV), and one wonderful aspect of the weekend is that it is available to the ticketbuying public. This year the event is June 4-6, and it is a destination wine program if there ever was one.

The weekend begins with a number of vintner-hosted dinners on Thursday, and then Friday provides one of the highlights of our year – the barrel tasting with more than 100 winemakers at the Napa Valley Barrel Auction, which is held simultaneously with “The Marketplace,” where numerous wineries will be pouring and restaurants will be serving delectable bites. There are more vintner-dinners available Friday night, and the spectacle culminates with a live auction and dinner celebration on Saturday, where bidding is not just spirited, but competitive for highly sought after lots.

While having fun is always a good reason to attend an event, the Auction provides much more for those in need. According to countyofnapa.org, the present population of Napa County is 137,744. That pales next to both Sonoma County, where sonomacounty.ca.gov estimates the population to be 494,336, and Collier County, FL (Naples), where colliercountyfl.gov reports the number at 384, 902. Why choose these three metropolitan areas to showcase? Because each holds a significant fundraising wine event to benefit the county’s residents each year, and, despite its smaller size, the numbers raised by the Napa Valley Vintners that benefits the community are indeed staggering.

They usually outraise Sonoma by a substantial margin (granted, Sonoma is newer in this game), and for many years jockeyed back and forth with Naples for the country’s crown (Naples has raised a bit more recently – but remember the population difference).

Through NVV’s singular fundraising endeavors, it has overseen investments of more than $245 million in local nonprofits since 1981. Also staggering is the impact of the industry on the local economy. Citing NVV, the Valley wine industry, and related businesses as a whole, create some 50,000 local jobs and contribute more than $11 billion to the local economy annually.

These are figures perhaps not known to the casual wine lover, or even the residents of the Napa Valley. Yet, when people learn the beneficiaries of these millions, it should make everyone want to partner in some manner with the NVV, whether they are part of the wine industry or not. The current recipient of benefits will be the Napa Valley Vintners Youth Wellness Initiative (working to help Napa’s youth live healthy, balanced lives).

Each year the NVV donates to the Napa Valley Vintners Healthy Community Fund (in order to meet urgent needs and respond in times of crisis, NVV has made long-term investments into this endowment fund. It has enabled NVV to remain responsive and resilient for the benefit of non-profits during times of crisis when fundraising activity has not been possible).

An already funded initiative is the Forest Health Initiative (wildfires remain one of Napa County's most pressing

issues. NVV is the largest private donor supporting Napa County’s Community Wildfire Protection Plan).

It is especially worth noting that during COVID, NVV invested $550,000 to help bring COVID testing and vaccinations to Napa County. And even without fundraising in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic, NVV granted $8.3 million in 2020 and $5.9 million in 2021 to Napa County nonprofits.

These monies are not raised without a considerable investment of time and resources. The NVV history of fundraising for the good of the community began in 1981 with the founding of Auction Napa Valley, at the time a pioneering event that set the standard for charitable wine auctions. Today, the commitment to giving continues through “Collective Napa Valley,” a year-round philanthropy program that brings together a series of fundraising events and initiatives under one umbrella.

Multiple ticket packages are available, from full weekend access to individual events (if not sold out). Go, and prepare to have the time of your life.

Auction Napa Valley

Auction Napa Valley is one of wine country’s most prestigious annual gatherings, drawing collectors, vintners, and enthusiasts from around the world for a weekend of exceptional wine, food, and philanthropy. Held June 4-6, the event is organized by Collective Napa Valley and showcases the region’s renowned hospitality and winemaking talent. Spanning multiple days, the auction weekend features a series of immersive experiences. Guests can attend intimate vintner-hosted dinners, where winemakers open their homes and wineries for curated meals paired with rare wines. The Napa Valley Barrel Auction offers the chance to taste directly from the barrel and bid on limited-production wines, while the finale — a high-energy live auction and dinner — presents once-in-a-lifetime lots, from exclusive wine collections to luxury travel experiences.

Tickets are typically sold as packages, with the full weekend experience priced at $5,000 per guest. This all-access option includes entry to all major events, from welcome dinners to the final live auction celebration. Additional packages, including VIP and single-event experiences like the Barrel Auction ($500), are also available, offering flexibility depending on budget and interest.

For those seeking a quintessential Napa Valley experience, Auction Napa Valley offers rare access to top wineries, extraordinary wines, and a meaningful opportunity to contribute to the local community—all in one unforgettable weekend.

All ticket packages are available now at auctionnapavalley.org.

The Best TACOS after a day of wine tasting

Napa and Sonoma counties may be known around the world for award-winning wines, but locals know that some of the most satisfying food in wine country comes folded inside a warm tortilla. Taco trucks, taquerias, and vibrant Mexican restaurants serve everything from simple street tacos to creative, chef-driven variations. For travelers exploring beyond the tasting room, the region’s taco scene offers an authentic and delicious way to experience local culture — sometimes with a margarita in hand.

In Napa, taco lovers often start with the city’s legendary food trucks. One of the most beloved is Tacos El Muchacho Alegre, a family-run truck known for classic street tacos loaded with carne asada, al pastor, or grilled chicken. The tortillas are warm, the meats are deeply seasoned, and the toppings are simple: onion, cilantro, and a splash of vibrant salsa. There’s no alcohol here — it’s purely about the tacos—but the flavors are so satisfying that few diners mind.

Another local staple is Las Palmas, a casual taqueria where the carnitas and carne asada tacos have earned a loyal following. Plates arrive piled high, the atmosphere is relaxed, and the focus remains firmly on hearty, traditional Mexican cooking. Like many classic taquerias, drinks are simple, with no full cocktail bar — but the food more than makes up for it.

For taco lovers who want a margarita alongside their meal, Los Agaves offers a livelier setting. Located in downtown Napa, the restaurant pairs its menu of tacos — filled with grilled meats, seafood, and regional specialties — with a full bar that features margaritas and an impressive tequila selection. It’s an ideal stop for an evening out after a day of wine tasting.

Another standout in Napa is La Cheve Bakery and Brews with authentic Mexican-inspired dishes and baked goods. While it doesn’t serve dinner, it’s the perfect place for a flavorful mid-morning or midday stop.

Seafood lovers should also seek out La Taquiza Fish Tacos, a popular taco truck specializing in Baja-style fish tacos. Crispy battered fish topped with cabbage, crema, and lime delivers a bright coastal flavor that pairs perfectly with a sunny afternoon.

In Sonoma County, the taco landscape continues to impress. Just over the hill, in Sonoma, El Molino Central has become one of the region’s most celebrated Mexican restaurants. The kitchen mills its own corn daily to produce fresh masa for tortillas and tamales, creating tacos with remarkable flavor and texture. The setting is casual and welcoming; while beer and wine are available, the focus here is on the craft of traditional cooking rather than cocktails.

TACOS EL MUCHACHO ALEGRE
LOS AGAVES

At Los Molcajetes Bar & Grill in Sonoma, and two locations in Santa Rosa, tacos are simple, authentic, and flavorful with classic fillings like asada, pastor, carnitas, and más. Favorites like cheesy quesabirria come with rich consommé for dipping with bold, comforting flavors. Reviews praise their margaritas — classic and punchy — and a fun range of craft cocktails that complement rich tacos and lively, festive vibes.

Santa Rosa is also home to Mitote Food Park , a lively outdoor food park celebrating regional Mexican cuisine. Here, several vendors serve different taco styles — from slow-braised birria to seafood tacos — while guests enjoy music, colorful murals, and a festive atmosphere. A bar serving beer and margaritas completes the scene.

El Roy’s Express Mex has long been a favorite food truck for its flavorful tacos and casual vibe – voted best food truck for 11 years in a row! It has earned a reputation as one of the North Bay’s classic late-night stops. In addition to food trucks, El Roy’s Express Mex has two brick-and-mortar locations: Petaluma and Santa Rosa. El Roy's Drinks are simple, but the tacos — especially the carne asada — are worth the visit.

Together, these taco spots reveal another side of wine country dining. While Napa and Sonoma counties are celebrated for elegant tasting rooms and fine restaurants, their taco culture is equally compelling — rooted in family recipes, regional traditions, and a deep love of bold flavors.

DESTINATION: LAKE COUNTY

Sip, Savor, and Support Music at WINEFEST

On June 13th, Library Park in the heart of Lakeport will transform into a vibrant celebration of music, wine, and community as the Lake County Symphony Association hosts its annual WINEFEST. Running from noon to 5 p.m., this long-standing tradition, now in its 20th year, is the biggest fundraiser for the symphony, and it promises a day of indulgence, creativity, and lively entertainment for visitors of all ages.

The festival is a haven for wine and beer enthusiasts. From the rolling hills and volcanic soils of Lake County, local vineyards produce some of the region’s most distinctive wines, bursting with flavors shaped by the area’s unique terroir. At WINEFEST, both home winemakers and established commercial wineries will pour tastes of their finest creations. Expect everything from crisp whites and bold reds to sparkling surprises that reflect Lake County’s adventurous spirit. Craft beer aficionados won’t be left out either— local brewers will be on hand to showcase small-batch brews perfect for sipping under the California sun.

WINEFEST is more than just tasting — it’s about giving back. The event, dubbed “Making Wine for Music,” directly supports the Lake County Symphony Association, helping to bring live classical and contemporary performances to the community. Attendees can also try their luck in the popular Wine Barrel Raffle, where two winners will each take home 24 bottles of Lake County wines, an enviable prize for any collector or casual sipper. For a personal touch, stop by the Symphony booth to meet Conductor John Parkinson, who will share stories about the symphony’s mission and the musicians who bring the music to life.

Advance tickets for wine and beer tasting are $30, or $35 at the gate, ensuring your entry into the tasting experience. But even if wine or beer isn’t your passion, WINEFEST offers plenty to enjoy. Admission is free for visitors who

want to browse the arts and crafts booths, savor local food offerings, or explore the Silent Auction, featuring unique items generously donated by local businesses and symphony supporters.

Adding to the festive atmosphere, live music will provide a soundtrack for the day, creating a lively and convivial environment where neighbors, visitors, and music lovers can mingle. Families, couples, and friends are all welcome to experience the fusion of flavors, artistry, and community spirit that defines WINEFEST.

Whether you’re a seasoned wine connoisseur, a craft beer fan, or

simply looking for a fun day out, WINEFEST promises a unique way to support the local symphony while celebrating Lake County’s rich food and wine culture. Don’t miss this opportunity to sip, savor, and make a difference — all in one unforgettable afternoon.

For tickets and more information, visit lakecountywinefest.com, or follow the celebration on Facebook at Facebook.com/WineForMusic.

Library Park is located at 225 Park Street, Lakeport, Come for the wine, stay for the music, and leave with memories — and perhaps a few bottles of Lake County’s finest—in hand.

DESTINATION: SONOMA VALLEY

Deerfield Ranch Winery – 50 Harvests in the Making

Winemaker Robert Rex and wife PJ Rex set out to do what nobody had done before. 50 years later, the original family or owners and creators of CleanWine® still stand tall making some of the most award-winning wines in the Valley.

Tucked into the western hills of Kenwood, along the scenic corridor of Sonoma Highway, Deerfield Ranch Winery offers a wine country experience that is both welcoming and a little unexpected. Known for its relaxed hospitality and a deep commitment to crafting CleanWine® without added sulfites, the family-owned winery invites visitors to explore Sonoma Valley through thoughtful tastings and lively events set inside its dramatic underground wine cave. Visitors often find that every visit feels personal, as the staff shares stories of the vineyard, the winemaking journey, and the family’s decades-long dedication to quality and sustainability, creating connections that linger long after the glass is empty.

The cave itself is one of the most memorable features of a visit. Carved into the hillside beneath the winery, the cool, softly lit space provides the perfect setting to sample Deerfield’s expressive wines — from bold Cabernet Sauvignon to elegant blends — while learning about the winery’s philosophy of clean, approachable winemaking. Guests often remark on the tranquil atmosphere, where the scent of oak barrels mingles with the earthy coolness of the stone walls.

Murder in the Cave

While tastings offer a wonderful introduction, the winery truly shines during its immersive events, which blend wine, food, and entertainment in memorable ways. One of the most anticipated gatherings this year is the winery’s playful Murder Mystery in the Cave, returning Saturday, June 13.

This year’s theme — Moulin Rouge Murder Mystery — promises an evening filled with theatrical flair, intrigue, and a dash of Las Vegas-style glamour. Guests are encouraged to arrive dressed to impress, channeling cabaret elegance or vintage showmanship as they step into a storyline of suspense and secrets. As the mystery unfolds throughout the evening, attendees work together to uncover clues and determine which character committed the crime.

The $95 ticket includes dinner and four drink tickets, ensuring plenty of Deerfield wines to accompany the evening’s festivities. Between courses and conversations, participants mingle, interrogate suspects, and piece together the puzzle. At the end of the night, prizes are awarded for both the best costume and the sharpest detective skills — adding an extra layer of friendly competition.

Events like this capture the spirit of Deerfield Ranch Winery: unpretentious, engaging, and rooted in the idea that wine should bring people together. Whether visiting for a relaxed cave tasting or returning for a lively themed evening, guests discover that the experience here is about more than what’s in the glass—it’s about the stories, laughter, and memorable moments shared along the way in Sonoma Valley. Every visit invites guests to slow down, savor each sip, and feel like part of the Deerfield family, creating memories that are as rich as the wines themselves. deerfieldranch.com
