Curves Take Centre Stage at PACC's Textile Art Exhibition

The Performance Arts Culture Cessnock (PACC) is set to showcase a stunning collection of contemporary Australian quilts that challenge traditional perceptions of textile art. Ahead of the Curve, opening 29 November and running through to 31 January 2026, brings together works from some of Australia's most innovative quilters in an exhibition that celebrates both technical mastery and creative experimentation.

Tara Glastonbury, Bloomin’ Lot, 2025

Curated by Tara Glastonbury, the exhibition centres on the curve as a powerful element in modern quilting—a shape that presents both technical challenges and extraordinary creative possibilities. Unlike traditional geometric quilting patterns, curves demand precision, patience, and a willingness to embrace risk. The featured artists have risen to this challenge, producing works that range from boldly improvised compositions to meticulously planned geometric designs.

The exhibition brings together an impressive roster of Australian quilters, including Wendy Nutt, Grace Di Muzio, Ruth de Vos, Rachaeldaisy Dodd, Pip Porter, Kate Henderson, Jess Wheelahan, Jeanne Treleaven, Pat Forster, Diana Vandeyar, Caroline Hadley, Brenda Gael Smith, and Belinda Betts. Each artist brings their unique vision to the exploration of curved forms, demonstrating how this single design element can inspire endless variation.

What makes Ahead of the Curve particularly compelling is how it positions quilting as a dynamic contemporary art form rather than merely a craft tradition. The works on display chart a course through improvisation and precision, boldness and restraint, revealing the curve as more than just a visual motif—it becomes a way to rethink process, embrace complexity, and expand the language of textile art itself.

For those who appreciate contemporary art or are curious about the evolution of traditional crafts, this exhibition offers a fascinating glimpse into how Australian makers are pushing boundaries and redefining their medium. The fluidity and structural complexity of curves provide rich territory for creative inquiry, and these quilters have embraced that challenge with fearless innovation.

Ahead of the Curve runs at PACC in Cessnock from 29 November until 31 January 2026. During the holiday period, PACC will be closed midday 24 December 2025 and reopen 9am Monday 5 January 2026. Visit www.mypacc.com.au/Whats-on/25-Ahead-of-the-Curve for more information.

High Heels, High Hopes!

Kinky Boots Struts into Newcastle

Step into a world of high heels, high hopes, and higher spirits this December, when Newcastle’s Chookas Entertainment presents the Tony Award-winning musical Kinky Boots at the Civic Theatre. From 18 to 21 December, audiences will be swept up in a feel-good celebration of self-expression, courage, and community, perfectly timed for the festive season.

Kinky Boots began as a 2005 film based on the true story of a small Northampton shoe factory that found new life producing bespoke boots for drag performers. It charmed audiences around the world and in 2013, the story took to the Broadway stage, reimagined as a high-energy musical.

With songs by pop icon Cyndi Lauper in her first foray into musical theatre and a script by acclaimed playwright Harvey Fierstein, Kinky Boots became an instant sensation. It went on to win six Tony Awards, a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theatre Album and three Olivier Awards.

“Kinky Boots is more than just a musical. It’s a message of love, acceptance, and the power of being unapologetically yourself,” says Jody Miller, Chookas Entertainment’s Producer. “We are thrilled to bring this story to life in Newcastle – it’s a show with a whole lot of heart, and we can’t wait for audiences to experience the magic.”

Kinky Boots tells the uplifting story of Charlie Price, a young man who inherits his father’s struggling shoe factory. When he meets Lola, a fabulous drag performer with a flair for fashion and an eye for opportunity who’s also in need of sturdy stilettos, their unlikely partnership gives rise to a bold new business. Together, they set out to create a line of sturdy stilettos for men and, in doing so, find the courage to step out of the shadows and embrace who they truly are.

This production is a landmark moment for Chookas Entertainment, marking the company’s debut production on the Civic’s main stage and their biggest show to date. For Producer Jody Miller, it’s a thrilling leap that represents years of hard work, risk, and belief in the power of community theatre to inspire and connect.

Over the past five years, Chookas has staged 18 productions, including Legally Blonde, Heathers, Chicago, Annie, and Be More Chill The company’s reputation for excellence and for providing opportunities to performers at all stages of their careers has made Chookas a vital part of the local theatre ecosystem.

“This is the first time we’ve mounted a production on the main stage at the Civic

Jody says. “Our shows at the Playhouse have all but sold out, so this feels like a natural next step.”

The decision to take on Kinky Boots came down to both heart and strategy.

“We wanted to do something different, something that felt right for Chookas. Kinky Boots ticks every box, it’s diverse, inclusive, fun, and filled with joy. Who else in Newcastle would do Kinky Boots? It’s the perfect fit for us.”

For Jody, the production is also a balancing act between creativity and family life.

“Our daughter, Felicity, is 17 months old, and I’m on maternity leave, so it didn’t make sense to do six productions a year like we used to. Instead, we decided to go big, one huge show that really makes an impact.”

“With 40% of tickets already sold, we’ve already got office Christmas parties booking in. It’s ideal for the festive season - it’s just great fun; the kind of show that makes people leave the theatre smiling.”

At the helm of Kinky Boots is an exceptional creative team, bringing together some of Newcastle’s most talented theatre professionals. Director Maddie Watts and Music Director Luke Baker lead the charge, guiding a dynamic cast through a production that’s equal parts hilarious, heartfelt, and high-heeled. They are joined by Assistant Director Theo Williams, a Newcastle entertainer currently performing in the national tour of RENT the musical.

Choreography is led by Caitlin Maher and Jody Miller.

Maddie Watts is no stranger to the Hunter’s performing arts scene. A Newcastle-based director, vocal coach, and educator with over a decade of industry experience, Maddie holds a Bachelor of Music (Voice) from the Newcastle Conservatorium of Music and a Diploma of Musical Theatre from Brent Street. Over the past eight years, Maddie has directed, choreographed, and musically directed a diverse range of productions across the region, from The SpongeBob Musical and Into the Woods to A Chorus Line, Legally Blonde, and Annie

“I’ve always been drawn to productions that celebrate individuality and connection,” Maddie says. “That’s the heartbeat of Kinky Boots."

"It’s a story that tells people it’s okay to be different, to be bold, and to own who you are."

Maddie’s passion for youth and community theatre has shaped her as both an educator and an artist. Having taught voice and musical theatre for over 11 years, she continues to nurture emerging talent across the region. And with Kinky Boots having a cast of 40, ranging

Theatre,”

in ages from 11 right through to mid-50s, her experience allows her to guide performers of all levels with patience, insight, and a deep understanding of how to bring out each individual’s best while weaving them seamlessly into the story.

“We’ve got an awesome cast – bursting with energy and big personalities. We have fantastic vocalists – stunning and rich voices – they bring the vocal energy, they’re just incredible. I can’t wait to see them shine on stage. Not only is this production visually exciting but it has fun, upbeat numbers and a really important message. It’s heart-warming. You won’t leave the theatre questioning your existence – you’ll leave smiling, feeling joyful – so important -especially around Christmas.”

While Kinky Boots dazzles visually, it’s the music that gives it soul and that’s where Music Director Luke Baker steps in. An accomplished musician, educator, and musical theatre veteran with a Bachelor of Music from the University of Newcastle and over a decade of experience as a conductor, arranger, and performer, Luke’s musical direction is the backbone of this production. It’s also his debut Chookas production.

His credits span a range of local and regional theatre, including The Addams Family,

and Shrek the Musical

Known for his collaborative approach and high musical standards, Luke has built a reputation as one of Newcastle’s most respected music directors.

Luke is leading a live 11-piece band, complemented by additional vocalists to enrich the sound.

“It’s a strong cast vocally, which makes my job easier,” he says.

“We had over 200 people audition, and the dance call was absolutely packed. It’s brought new faces into the company and created such a positive, creative buzz.”

Asked to pick a favourite number, Luke doesn’t hesitate. “‘Sex Is in the Heel’ and ‘Land of Lola’ - those are huge moments. They take you from the factory floor to this otherworldly space filled with colour and confidence. It’s a real musical journey.”

Above all, Luke hopes audiences walk away uplifted. “Whether you’re a lifelong musical fan or it’s your first time at the theatre, you’ll have a great time. The story’s message - that you can change the world when you change your mind - feels especially powerful right now.”

For Luke, who saw the original Australian run of Kinky Boots in Sydney, the show’s score is irresistible.

“From a musical theatre perspective, I’ve always loved it,” he says. “The score is pure Cyndi Lauper - it’s pop-infused, full of 80s synths, and incredibly catchy. It’s the kind of music that makes you want to dance in your chair. But it also tells a really heartfelt story about community, self-expression, and being true to yourself.”

The musical demands both technical skill and emotional depth from its performers.

“One of my biggest focuses has been ensuring that the characterisation comes through in the singing as much as the acting,” Luke explains. “The show jumps between very different worlds, from upper-class London to a working-class factory, and we’ve worked hard to make those transitions feel authentic.”

The glittering heart of Kinky lies with its vibrant cast led by Tyler Chapman as the glamorous and fearless Lola, and Zac Smith as the determined but conflicted Charlie Price. Together their chemistry, charisma, and emotional range bring the story’s message of acceptance to life. They’re supported by Siddha Crossley as Lauren, Brynn Hulls as Nicola, and Chris Porters as Don and an incredible ensemble of actors, vocalists and dancers.

For Tyler Chapman, stepping into Lola’s iconic heels has been both a dream role and a personal journey.

“Lola is such a complex, beautiful character,” he says. “She’s fierce, funny, and fabulous, but she’s also deeply human. Beneath the sequins and sass, there’s so much heart.”

Tyler’s rich performance background adds depth to his portrayal. A dynamic Newcastlebased performer since his teens, Tyler’s credits include Spring Awakening, Mamma Mia!, Chicago, Legally Blonde, and Catch Me If You Can. He’s also appeared on Season 10 of Australian Idol and toured Europe and the UK with Australian pop artist BEKS.

Playing Lola also comes with its challenges.

“Aside from dancing in high heels and wigs for over two hours, the biggest challenge is telling both Lola’s story and Simon’s - her dedragged persona -simultaneously and truthfully. Simon’s experiences shape who Lola becomes, and Lola’s exterior strength gives Simon the

courage to pursue change. Both narratives need to be communicated for the story’s message to really land.”

“Playing Lola means representing courage, the courage to live authentically and to stand tall even when the world tries to bring you down,” he shares. “It’s a role that demands honesty and empathy.”

He’s equally clear on why audiences shouldn’t miss this production.

“You’d be seriously missing out if you didn’t see Kinky Boots. It’s hilarious, chaotic, and heartfelt from start to finish. But more than that, it’s a show that can truly change minds. I remember seeing it in Sydney when I was 17 and it gave me a whole new perspective on who I wanted to be, both on stage and off. That’s the kind of heart this show brings.”

Opposite Lola is Zac Smith as Charlie Price, a role that grounds the show’s emotion in genuine, relatable humanity. For Zac, stepping into Charlie Price’s shoes is both a long-held dream and a personal connection.

“Charlie has been a dream role for years,” he says. “Tyler and I have joked about playing Charlie and Lola together since we first met back in 2019, so finally bringing that to life feels really special. It’s such an uplifting story, and

Charlie’s journey from resistance to passion is one I truly connect with.”

“On the surface, Charlie’s a bit of a grump, but underneath he’s got a big heart. He’s awkward, determined, and genuinely funny when he lets himself relax. Watching him rediscover what lights him up again is one of my favourite parts of the show.”

Zac’s impressive background brings added depth to the role. An award-winning theatre director, actor, and designer, he has worked on more than fifty stage and film productions, including Little Shop of Horrors, Merrily We Roll Along, Legally Blonde, PUFFS, and The Father. His directing credits include acclaimed productions with Opera Hunter, Chookas Entertainment, and Newcastle Theatre Company, and his work has been recognised with multiple CONDA Awards.

When it comes to why audiences should see Kinky Boots, Zac is passionate.

“In a world constantly focused on our differences, Kinky Boots reminds us that kindness and acceptance matter. How someone else lives their life shouldn’t affect how you live yours and at the core, we’re all the same.”

As Kinky Boots prepares to hit the Civic stage, it’s clear this is more than just another

production for Chookas Entertainment. It’s a celebration - of theatre, of self-expression, and of the incredible local talent that keeps Newcastle’s arts scene sparkling.

“We want people to recognise that a night out at the theatre can be for everyone,” Jody says. “It’s not just for theatre lovers - it’s for friends, families, work groups. Go out for dinner, grab a drink, see a show. It’s a fantastic way to celebrate Christmas together.”

“Kinky Boots is about finding your place in the world and having the courage to dance your way there.”

So, this December, slip into your fiercest stilettos and strut into the Civic Theatre for Kinky Boots - a dazzling, sequin-strewn celebration of laughter, love, and infectious pop beats that’ll have you dancing in your seat and singing all the way home!

Young artists from the Place Based Abilities Program share their creativity, connection, and joy through the Placed to Speak podcast.

The Placed to Speak podcast continues to shine a light on the creativity and confidence of young people in the Place Based Abilities Program, and Episode 3, Sketch On – Straight Off the Pencil, might just be the most colourful one yet.

Hosted by Ness, this episode introduces Emily and Dom, two talented young artists whose passion for drawing leaps straight off the page (and sometimes the iPad). Together, they chat about their inspirations, their favourite characters, and what keeps them creating.

For Emily, art has always been about connection. “It was the influence of my pop,” she shared.

“When I was younger, he asked if I wanted to draw, and I just did!” That simple moment sparked a lifelong love for art. These days, she’s a self-proclaimed perfectionist who enjoys experimenting with digital tools and bright colours. “I like to get all the line art and colours just right,” she laughed.

Dom’s creativity was also sparked by animation. “I used to draw SpongeBob, The Simpsons, and Pokémon,” he said proudly.

Over time, his skills have grown from sketching in notebooks to producing digital art and even selling his framed pieces.

“It feels good knowing someone might have my art hanging up somewhere.” –Dom

Between plenty of laughter and a few “skibidi” jokes, the group explore how drawing helps them relax, express themselves, and build confidence. Ness’s warm questions and the playful banter between friends capture the spirit of connection that defines Placed to Speak. It’s a conversation full of personality and heart, showing just how creativity can bring people together.

Delivered through a collaboration between The Place: Charlestown Community Centre and ReadyUp Skills, the Place Based Abilities Program helps young people with disability build skills, share their voices, and inspire pride in the community.

Wholesome, funny, and full of heart, Sketch On – Straight Off the Pencil is the kind of listening that leaves you smiling and maybe reaching for a pencil yourself.

A Hidden Gem by the Sea

Perched above Newcastle’s harbour with one of the city’s best views, Fort Scratchley Function Centre is quietly carving out a name for itself as a place where food, history and community come together. While many locals know the headland for its military past, fewer have stepped inside the contemporary, light-filled venue now hosting

everything from weddings and celebrations to corporate gatherings – all with food that puts the region’s best food on show.

Take the oysters, for example. Port Stephens farmer Lucas Ashley of G&D Oysters supplies the shellfish served at the venue. For him, it’s all about the subtle differences in flavour.

“The flavour really depends on where the oyster finishes,” Lucas explains.

“Closer to the sea, it’s saltier. Further up the creek, you get creamier notes. We try to keep them as close to wild as possible – that’s when you get the best flavour.”

That attention to provenance is what defines the kitchen at the venue. Of course, the backdrop doesn’t hurt. Wide windows frame sweeping views of the city and coastline, while the alfresco deck catches sea breezes perfect for sunset cocktails. Inside, the atmosphere strikes a balance between modern and relaxed – a surprising contrast to the fort’s sandstone walls and storied past just steps away.

Named a finalist in the 2025 NSW Awards for Excellence for Event / Convention Centre Caterer, Fort Scratchley Function Centre is being recognised not just for its setting but for the care it brings to every plate. A hidden gem by the sea, it’s proof that Newcastle’s culinary story is as much about celebrating where we are as it is about what’s on the table.

Planning ahead for 2026? There are a few delicious extras on offer – from a complimentary oyster bar or cocktails on arrival for social events, to a complimentary one-hour drinks and canapés upgrade post-conference. Contact the Fort Scratchley event team for details.

With sweeping ocean views and unrivalled outlooks across the city, coastline and harbour, host your next event at one of Newcastle’s most distinctive venues.

• Modern, light-filled venue

• Panoramic ocean views

• Capacity from 40 to 200

• Free onsite parking

• Alfresco deck ideal for networking

• Unique venue location in Newcastle East

• Finalist 2025 Awards for Excellence –Regional NSW event/convention centre caterer

A VERY NEWY CHRISSY

Local Theatre Serves Up Holiday Heart with a Hunter Twist

It’s the week before Christmas and all throughout Newcastle… Betty and Trish are negotiating their first Christmas since their divorce!

Their grownup kids, Pax and Annabel, aren’t ready to give up their Christmas

Eve family traditions, but Betty wants to start something new. Pax doesn’t know which mum he should introduce his new girlfriend to first, and Annabel just wants someone to notice her. Meanwhile, at the Planning Department, Trish tries to wrangle her colleagues, Simmo and Joey, in the busy period before the Christmas shutdown. Simmo is looking for love in all the wrong places, and Joey is having feelings for someone who is most certainly not available.

And down on the street, where Myron collects loose change and bottles, everyone complains about the pothole in the middle of the road, but nobody will do anything about it.

As Christmas Eve approaches, it will take a miracle to give everyone what they want – but they might just get what they need.

A Very Newy Chrissy is a two-act play that blends a little ‘Love Actually’ with a distinctly Newcastle take on the Christmas season, featuring a diverse range of families and

friends, well-loved locations, and a joyful spirit that gets every Novocastrian in the mood for the holiday season.

Like all great festive stories, A Very Newy Chrissy captures the highs and lows that come when families gather around the holidays— the traditions we cling to, the tensions that simmer under the surface, and the unexpected moments of laughter and connection that remind us why we keep coming together. It’s heart, humour, and home-grown storytelling wrapped up with tinsel and a true community feel.

This UpStage at the Playhouse production, presented by One For The Road Productions, is the creative partnership of Bronwyn Sartori (director) and Nat Newman (writer). Bron is an actor, musician, producer and director, with a wealth of experience producing festivals and events. Nat is an internationally award-winning writer, actor, and creative writing coach.

“Our shared goal is to create local theatre that uplifts the voices of female, nonbinary and queer voices,” says Nat.

UpStage at the Playhouse is an initiative of Civic Theatre Newcastle for City of Newcastle. You can catch A Very Newy Chrissy from 6 to 15 November. For tickets and information, visit www.civictheatrenewcastle.com.au.

Wingham Music Festival Returns as Flood Recovery Celebration

READ ONLINE

The Wingham Music Festival is set to make a powerful comeback this November, transforming into a beacon of hope for communities still recovering from the devastating May floods that swept through the Manning River catchment.

Running from 21 to 23 November at Wingham Showground, this year's festival has been reimagined as a "Flood Recovery Celebration of Music, Community & Connection," bringing together acclaimed artists including Backsliders, The Badloves, Bill Chambers, Hat Fitz and Cara, Round Mountain Girls, and Blues Arcadia.

The May floods were catastrophic for the region, with over 700mm of rainfall in less than a week, causing the Manning River to surge to

record levels. More than 50,000 residents were forced to evacuate, with over 10,000 homes damaged and critical infrastructure destroyed, including Wingham's main water pipeline. Emergency services conducted 280 rescues with assistance from the Australian Defence Force.

In response to this community crisis, festival organisers secured government support to offer free three-day passes to residents in seven flood-affected postcodes. These tickets were quickly claimed by grateful locals eager for some much-needed celebration.

"We knew this year we needed something really special for the community," explains Festival Coordinator Donna Ballard.

"Being able to offer free tickets for those impacted by the flood is a great step in moving forward."

The artist lineup demonstrates remarkable solidarity with the community. Blues Arcadia extended their final 2025 tour to include Wingham, while Backsliders reserved November 23 specifically for the festival. As Dom Turner from Backsliders expressed, "Wingham truly feels like family."

Three-day passes are now available for purchase by visitors outside the affected areas, with proceeds supporting local recovery efforts. Any surplus funds will be donated to local business chambers, Rotary, and Lions Clubs to help rebuild lives and livelihoods across the Mid North Coast.

Single-day tickets will be released after the October long weekend, with a second round of artist announcements expected in early November.

The festival represents more than entertainment—it's a statement of resilience and community spirit, welcoming music lovers from across Australia to show solidarity with flood-affected communities while enjoying three days of exceptional live music.

ONE KILOMETRE, ENDLESS FINDS. Morpeth's Inaugural Treasure Trail Unveiled

There’s something undeniably magical about Morpeth. Nestled in the heart of the Hunter Valley, this historic riverside town has long been known for its heritage charm, boutique appeal, and warm country hospitality. But come 8 and 9 November, Morpeth will offer something even more compelling—a chance to uncover real treasure.

The inaugural Morpeth Village Treasure Trail promises to be far more than a vintage market. It’s an immersive, slow-travel experience that invites locals and out-of-towners alike to walk the town’s storied streets with fresh eyes. Coinciding with the national Garage Sale Trail Event—Australia’s grassroots celebration of reuse and community —the Morpeth event captures the best of both worlds: sustainability with style.

This isn’t your typical flea market setup. Instead of rows of anonymous stalls, the Treasure Trail stretches over one kilometre, linking a series of antique dealers in halls and churches along High St, Morpeth. Each stop along the trail is a curated collection of vintage finds, quirky collectables, and one-off antiques. The journey itself is as much a drawcard as the destination.

For collectors, this event is a dream come true. Whether you’re hunting for a Deco-era dressing table, mid-century ceramics, or the perfect addition to your coin or stamp archive, chances are you’ll find it here. In a rare offering, expert dealers will be providing free on-site coin & stamp valuations. Bring them down, you never know what you may uncover!

Beyond the thrill of the hunt, what makes the Morpeth Village Treasure Trail truly special is its underlying ethos. This is vintage with a conscience. By buying pre-loved items, we’re not only choosing charm and character over fast fashion and flat-pack—we're embracing a circular economy and reducing waste, all while supporting small, local businesses.

And of course, Morpeth itself is half the joy. With its riverside walks, artisan boutiques, and beloved cafes, the town makes an ideal daytrip or weekend getaway. Add in this one-of-akind event, and you've got the perfect excuse to linger a little longer.

So, mark the date, dust off your walking shoes, and come ready to explore. The past is waiting—and it just might be hiding in plain sight.

Newcastle Museum Unveils 'Model Newcastle' Exhibition

Newcastle Museum has unveiled its next major exhibition, and there's one notable difference to the items on display – their size. Model Newcastle: Big Stories, Little Things opened on 27 September into the intricate world of models and miniatures that pack maximum impact despite their diminutive scale.

The exhibition features items from the Museum's extensive collection alongside treasured creations on loan from the community, exploring how these tiny worlds serve big purposes – from exploring the past to imagining the future.

City of Newcastle Director of Museum, Archive, Libraries and Learning, Julie Baird, said the exhibition has been "a labour of love" showcasing craftsmanship from local and international designers, artists and makers. The exhibition explores five distinct themes:

• Views of the City features architectural models, including one of Australia's best model railways, Newcastle 1899, which depicts the Newcastle Railway Station precinct at the turn of the century. It also includes a model of the former Newcastle Workers' Club, used during the coronial inquest into the 1989 earthquake.

Modelling the Imagination explores creative entertainment pieces, including a 3D-printed mechanical fish tank by former Newcastle Herald cartoonist Peter Lewis and the fantastical puppetry collection of marionette performer Murray Raine.

• Scale Engineering showcases expert replicas from the Lake Macquarie Live Steamers Association, one of Australia's longestrunning model societies, active for more than 70 years.

• On the Water taps into Newcastle's marine history with model ships, boats and ferries, including a scale model of the famous Cutty Sark sailing ship. This model was painstakingly built over 40 years by Peter Sharp, whose fascination with Newcastle Harbour history was sparked during his career with Newcastle Water Police.

• Big Skills Miniaturised examines Newcastle's manufacturing legacy through apprentice pieces and demonstrator models used for competency assessments and skill demonstration.

The exhibition offers hands-on family fun with dollhouses inspired by civic landmarks, a miniature railway track, and film-making experiences using a post-apocalyptic model city.

Lord Mayor Dr Ross Kerridge praised the exhibition's multigenerational appeal, noting how models have been used for generations to "entertain, educate, investigate and explain."

Running until February 2026, tickets cost $10 for adults, $8 for concessions, and $5 for children (ages 5-16). Family passes are available for $25. For more information, visit www.newcastlemuseum.com.au.

Hunter Valley Boutique Wine Show Marks 35 Years of Excellence

IMAGES SOURCE HUNTER VALLEY

WINE SHOW

The Hunter Valley Boutique Winemaker's Show began in 1989 with just eleven wineries, serving as a competition to evaluate wines made from grapes grown in the Hunter Valley by boutique winemakers and providing an opportunity for small winemakers to showcase their wines to consumers.

Presented by the Hunter River Agricultural and Horticultural Association, the annual show celebrates the highest quality wines produced from grapes grown in the Hunter Valley. In

those early days, the only participants were those vineyards that grew and crushed 100 tonnes of grapes. Today, those entering must not produce more than 350 tonnes a year, and the wine must be fermented in a winery whose total crush does not exceed 350 tonnes.

The 35th annual Hunter Valley Boutique Wine Show has once again demonstrated why the region's boutique producers continue to set benchmarks for quality and innovation. With almost 300 entries judged across more than 50 classes, the 2025 competition awarded a record number of medals, with judges praising the "exceptional diversity of styles and depth of quality."

Two distinguished panels led the judging from 15 to 17 September. Mark Richardson chaired Panel A alongside Jade Hafey, Hugh Spinaze and Valentina Moresco, while Nicole Gow led Panel B with Will Figueira, Brett Woodward and Nicholas Kruger.

The coveted Karl Stockhausen Commemorative Trophy for Best White Wine of the Show was awarded to Colvin Wines for their 2009 De Beyers Vineyard Semillon, marking back-to-back wins for the producer. The 2025 Ray Healey Trophy for Best Red Wine of the Show went to Tintilla Estate Wines for their 2023 Reserve Shiraz, while Thomas Wines claimed the title of Most Successful Boutique Exhibitor.

Judges were particularly impressed with several standout classes, noting the "terrific bracket with a mix of bright fresh Shiraz styles with some more traditional styles" in the 2023 Shiraz category, a "fabulous bracket of classic aged Hunter Semillon," and describing the 2024 Chardonnay class as having "great depth" with Gold winners being "great expressions of the Hunter Valley style."

This milestone year also marked an exciting first for the Show, with the Awards and Celebration Lunch opening its doors to the public on Friday, 26 September at Maitland Town Hall. Attendees enjoyed tastings of awarded wines, gourmet fare from Sprout Catering, live entertainment and the announcement of winners in a vibrant celebration of the region's winemaking excellence.

The Goodchild Family's 25-Year Journey at Pukara Estate

WORDS LIANE MORRIS

IMAGES SOURCE PUKARA ESTATE

Tucked away in the rolling hills of the Upper Hunter, Pukara Estate has become one of Australia’s most recognised names in premium olive oils and vinegars. For more than two decades, the brand has stood at the intersection of tradition and innovation, bringing the distinct flavours of the Hunter Valley to kitchens across the country. Today, under the stewardship of Steve and Racquel Goodchild, Pukara Estate continues to thrive - Hunter-made, family-run, and passionately committed to quality.

The story of Pukara Estate began in the late 1990s when the Hunter Valley’s potential for premium olive production was only just being realised. Among the trailblazers was Steve Goodchild, who had been running international olive industry research tours from his Queensland base since 1996.

“Both Steve and I come from generational farming families, and he always knew that he wanted to be a farmer-producer,” said Racquel.

Steve could see the potential for farming olives commercially and would tour places like California and Argentina to learn about the industry. The property in Denman was purchased in 1999, and the first olives were planted that year. The Hunter Valley was the ideal location to really begin their journey.

Racquel and Steve’s approach is anchored in values that feel both deeply personal and proudly Hunter. Attention to detail, respect for the land, and a hands-on involvement in every stage of the process define the estate’s ethos.

“As a husband-and-wife team, our shared purpose has always been to create exceptional products that bring people together. Society is so tech-heavy and intense these days, as a family, we value the times spent around a table, enjoying good-quality food, talking and

connecting with each other. Our products enable people to do just that with minimal effort. If your ingredients are good quality, you don’t have to do so much to prepare your food, and our flavoured products, especially the oils and vinegars, provide the wow factor for these special moments.

“This is very much a family business. Our kids have grown up on the estate and can’t imagine a life without it. They love it. Our eldest daughter, Georgia, has been working in retail sales across our three locations – Muswellbrook, Pokolbin, and Newcastle- and is now learning the ropes from Steve in terms of tasting, judging, and blending. She has a great palate. Annabelle, our youngest, is sitting her HSC this year but has already helped us out with her photography and graphic design skills. We’re hoping she’ll join us after university.”

Georgia and Annabelle’s involvement underscores just how much Pukara Estate has

always been about family. It’s not just a business, but a way of life —one that blends heritage with innovation and ties each generation to the land.

Over the past 25 years, the Goodchilds have developed an extensive range of awardwinning products, but it is their extra virgin olive oils and vinegars that have cemented Pukara Estate’s reputation as an Australian leader in the gourmet food industry. Their oils capture the unique character of the Hunter Valley groves - from the robust and peppery styles loved by chefs to more delicate and fruity oils perfect for everyday cooking. Each season’s release brings anticipation, with their much-loved Novello oil marking the start of harvest and celebrated for its fresh, vibrant flavour. Made from the very first olives of the season and pressed within hours of harvest, Novello is bottled unfiltered to capture its intense, grassy aroma and bold, peppery finish—a pure expression of fresh, new-season oil that has become a highlight for loyal Pukara customers and collectors each year.

While the oils established Pukara Estate’s name, it is the vinegars that truly set them apart.

"Our vinegars are among our most exciting products, with a story rooted in tradition and innovation."

"The mother culture was sourced from Seppeltsfield in the Barossa, and has been in continuous production since the late 1800s. In 2006, Steve laid down 12 oak barrels of aged balsamic vinegar using a rolling blend method, drawing from the barrels while topping them up with new stock. Made with Hunter Valley grapes and wine, this continuously nurtured mother culture creates an authentically Australian aged vinegar, rare (if not unique), in a market where most high-quality vinegars are imported.”

Their range of caramelised balsamics and fruit-driven varieties has become a signature of the brand. The now-iconic Caramelised Balsamic Vinegar remains a best-seller, but innovations such as fig, pomegranate and Racquel’s favourite, guava, continue to inspire both home cooks and chefs.

“Our vinegars are about making flavour accessible,” Racquel explains.

“You can take the simplest dish - grilled vegetables, a salad, even fruit - and transform it with just a drizzle. That’s what excites me, giving people the confidence to create something special without overcomplicating it.”

Pukara Estate’s reach extends far beyond the Hunter Valley, with products distributed nationally, sold directly to restaurants and retailers such as Harris Farm, exported internationally, and available through their own retail outlets and online.

“We grow it, make it, and distribute it ourselves. That’s how we started when we were small, and it’s the approach that has stayed with us ever since.”

The journey from grove to bottle is intensive. Unlike countries where olives are hand-picked and processing is widely available, Steve was involved early on in mechanising harvests and establishing on-site facilities - essential steps to ensure olives are pressed quickly while still fresh.

“Olives take a whole year to grow, often in challenging conditions, and there’s only a small window to create a quality product. It’s essentially a fruit juice that will deteriorate if you don’t act fast.”

Vinegar, by contrast, follows a completely different process; it complements the oils perfectly and adds breadth to Pukara’s product range, giving the brand more shelf presence and helping build a sustainable business.

A dedicated team works together to bring the estate's vision to life. Every product either features one of Pukara’s base ingredients or is crafted to complement them. Recent innovations include a high-quality pasta sauce range made with Australian tomatoes and a fresh Chimichurri that has quickly gained a following.

"Steve and I are always exploring new product ideas. We're constantly researching and developing, experimenting with ingredients, and refining until we achieve exactly what we are looking for, and that’s been our approach across the board - from sauces to our skincare range. Everything we create has to reflect the quality and flavour our brand stands for,” says Racquel.

While Pukara Estate is renowned for its olive oils and vinegars, the estate’s offerings extend far beyond the bottle. Richly flavoured condiments, artisan jams, pesto, and dukkah all complement their core products, while an extensive range of gift packs makes sharing a taste of the Hunter Valley effortless. Visiting one of Pukara’s tasting rooms in Muswellbrook, Pokolbin, or Newcastle offers a full sensory experience: guests can sample oils and vinegars, explore the product range, and see for themselves the care, craftsmanship, and passion that go into every bottle.

Credit: Beth Jennings Photography

One of the most unexpected products in their range, and one that illustrates Pukara Estate’s commitment to sustainability, is their olive-grazed lamb. Introduced several years ago, this innovative system allows lambs to graze directly in the olive grove. The animals naturally manage undergrowth and lower branches, reducing the need for pruning and eliminating the use of herbicides between the rows.

The lambs do the work and at the same time they’re contributing to a more sustainable ecosystem. It’s a beautiful synergy, reducing costs, protecting the land, and producing a premium product that carries the subtle flavours of the olives they graze on.

This unique diet yields a lamb with a delicate, distinctive taste profile, known as a “passive flavour infusion,” which has quickly caught the attention of local chefs and food enthusiasts. Through a partnership with Hunter Valley Premium Meats, Pukara Estate’s lamb is served in iconic regional pubs, restaurants, and at gourmet dinners, providing yet another example of how the estate blends innovation with respect for tradition and the land. It’s the one product you won’t find in their outlets!

Beyond food, Pukara Estate has extended its passion for natural, high-quality ingredients into skincare with the Earth & Grace range. Using the estate’s signature olive oils alongside other nourishing botanicals, the collection includes hand creams, body lotions, and balms designed

to hydrate, protect, and rejuvenate the skin. Like their culinary products, each item reflects the care, authenticity, and attention to detail that define the Pukara ethos.

For home cooks and enthusiasts, Pukara Estate offers even more ways to experience their products. The Connoisseur Club offers members early access to new releases, including the Novello oil, exclusive hampers and products, birthday offers, and updates on harvests. On the Pukara Estate website, you’ll find over 190 online recipes spanning mains, sides, dressings, and desserts, so

that enthusiasts can recreate the vibrant flavours of the estate in their own kitchens, bringing a touch of the Hunter Valley to every meal.

From olive groves to the bottle, from the kitchen to self-care, Pukara Estate blends innovation, sustainability, and a commitment to quality. Whether it’s a drizzle of premium oil, a splash of aged balsamic, or the nourishing touch of their skincare, every product reflects the spirit of the land, the family, and the values that have defined Pukara Estate for more than 25 years. Latitude 32 Wines:

A Spring Renaissance in the Hunter Valley

IMAGES CREDIT ELFES IMAGES

Spring in the Hunter Valley has always been magical, but at Latitude 32 Wines on Hermitage Road, this season brings something extraordinary – the perfect convergence of a winery hitting its stride and nature's annual renaissance. As the vines begin their new growth cycle and the landscape transforms into a verdant tapestry, visitors are discovering why this boutique winery has quickly become one of the region's most exciting destinations.

Just over a year since opening their doors, Emma and David White's vision for Latitude 32 is blooming alongside their vineyards. The former UK corporate executives, who describe themselves as reformed "wine chasers," have created something uniquely compelling in the Hunter Valley landscape. Their philosophy of "fun with serious intent" resonates particularly well in spring, when the energy of new growth matches their innovative approach to winemaking and hospitality.

The winery's recent addition of head winemaker Adam Holmberg marks another chapter in this spring awakening story. Holmberg, who brings experience from renowned Hunter Valley establishments Tyrell's and Leogate, joined the team with Emma's mandate to experiment and push boundaries while maintaining the fruit-first philosophy that defines Latitude 32's approach.

"Emma has given me free rein," Adam explains, "and I'm excited to push the boundaries of tradition without losing the quality."

This spring represents Adam’s first full season at the helm, bringing fresh techniques and perspectives to complement the winery's established ethos.

Perhaps nowhere is the spring renewal more evident than in Latitude 32's commitment to regenerative farming practices. As the season unfolds, visitors can witness firsthand the winery's innovative approach to vineyard sustainability. Between the vine rows, a diverse cover crop of canola, legumes, and rhubarb creates a living carpet that not only looks stunning but serves multiple ecological purposes.

"It becomes an ecosystem that looks after itself," Emma explains. Native bees, introduced as part of their sustainability program, busy themselves pollinating these cover crops, which will eventually be mowed back into the soil as natural fertiliser. This regenerative approach, which replaces synthetic chemicals with nature's own systems, creates a vineyard that thrives in harmony with its environment.

The reduction in tractor and diesel use, along with the introduction of beneficial insects like ladybugs for natural pest management, demonstrates how modern viticulture can work with nature rather than against it. For visitors

this spring, the vineyard serves as a living laboratory of sustainable practices that directly contribute to the quality of the wines in the glass.

The cellar door experience at Latitude 32 captures the essence of spring perfectly. The space, with its emphasis on comfort and connection to the landscape, features floor-toceiling windows that frame spectacular views of the vineyards and Brokenback Mountains. Multiple seating arrangements, ranging from the cozy interior spaces to the expansive verandah and lawn areas, cater to every mood and preference.

Spring visitors particularly appreciate the freedom to purchase wine by the glass and wander the property, creating their own adventure among the vines, around the dam, or simply lounging on the lawn with the giant Connect Four or Jenga sets. The dog-friendly environment and fire pit (perfect for cooler spring evenings) add to the welcoming atmosphere.

The innovative dumpling and wine pairing experience offers something unique in the region – various flavour combinations from pork and prawn to Szechuan beef and vegetarian options that complement the wine range beautifully. Morning visitors can book breakfast hampers from 9am, perfect for greeting the spring sunrise among the vines.

The wine portfolio at Latitude 32 reflects a balance of respect for Hunter Valley traditions and enthusiasm for innovation. Their classic lineup includes traditional Hunter Semillon, two distinct Chardonnay styles, Semillon-Chardonnay blends, Shiraz, and a Méthode Traditionelle sparkling wine. The Rosé, crafted from Shiraz, offers perfect spring sipping.

But it's The Enigma that genuinely captures the winery's innovative spirit. This white wine made from black grapes – specifically 45-yearold Pinot Noir vines – represents seven years

of research and experimentation inspired by the Whites' travels to Alsace. The complex process of creating a truly white wine from dark grapes while maintaining authentic Pinot Noir characteristics showcases the technical expertise and creative vision driving Latitude 32.

As spring progresses into summer, Latitude 32 continues evolving. Plans for planting Spanish Mencia and Italian Aglianico

varieties demonstrate their commitment to climate-adaptive viticulture and adventurous winemaking. International expansion into European markets builds on their success in China, while monthly Friday Night Jam Sessions and vineyard walks with the winemaking team strengthen community connections.

This spring, Latitude 32 represents more than just another Hunter Valley cellar door – it's a glimpse into the future of Australian winemaking, where tradition and innovation come together in perfect harmony.

A Legacy of Artisan Excellence at Hunter Valley Chocolate Co.

For over 25 years, Hunter Valley Chocolate Company has been delighting visitors with world-class chocolates crafted right in the heart of wine country. What began as a vision by owner Jo Clarke has blossomed into one of the region's premier attractions, combining international inspiration with artisan craftsmanship.

Jo's passion for excellence and her extensive travels across South America and Europe continue to inspire innovations at both locations—the factory and showroom at Twenty-3-Twenty on Broke Road, Pokolbin, and the Peterson House store, where chocolate and sparkling wine create the perfect pairing. With over two decades of experience in the industry, she's witnessed the evolution of chocolate appreciation in Australia and has been instrumental in elevating local chocolate-making to world-class standards.

The recently renovated showroom showcases a stunning circular display counter inspired by Jo's visit to Bariloche, Argentina, where 23 chocolate shops line a single street. This design innovation reflects her keen eye for global trends and commitment to enhancing the customer experience. The light, airy space, with its warm timber floors, provides the perfect backdrop for viewing the extensive range of handcrafted chocolates.

The secret to their exceptional quality lies in using only the finest Belgian couverture chocolate in dark, milk and white varieties, complemented by a touch of Swiss milk base for extra creaminess. Australian dried fruits and nuts, along with distilled pure fruit oils for infusion, create authentic, subtle flavours. Made in small five-kilogram batches almost daily and packed in-store, every piece guarantees freshness.

Peter Carpenter, Jo's son and trained chocolatier, leads the production alongside his daughter, ensuring the family legacy continues through generations. Their philosophy is simple: keep the focus on the chocolate itself, allowing the quality of ingredients to shine through.

The range is extraordinary—from caramel frogs and chilli bombs to peppermint creams and cherry liqueurs. Peppermint thins remain the top seller, followed closely by Rocky Road. For non-chocolate lovers, there are over 20 flavours of handmade fudge, Italian gelato, and candies to explore.

Both stores are open seven days from 9am to 5pm, and online orders are available at www.hvchocolate.com.au. Whether watching the chocolatiers at work or relaxing in the café with a hot chocolate, a visit promises pure indulgence in wine country.

Sip into Spring

Spring – that glorious season when the Hunter Valley bursts back to life, the vines awaken with fresh growth, and suddenly all we want is to be outdoors with a glass in hand and good food on the table.

This is the season for wines that mirror the landscape around us: crisp, vibrant, and full of energy. Think refreshing whites served properly chilled, perfect alongside the seafood platters, garden salads, fresh pasta, and alfresco feasts that define springtime entertaining.

But here's something many visitors to our cellar doors don't realise – spring doesn't mean abandoning red wines entirely. The key is choosing lighter styles with bright acidity, restrained tannins, and moderate alcohol. Serve them with a gentle chill, and you'll discover how beautifully they complement warm-weather dining.

Changing your wine choices with the seasons isn't just practical – it's an invitation to explore the incredible diversity our region offers. As the

days lengthen and temperatures climb, let your palate follow suit toward wines that feel fresh, clean, and effortlessly drinkable.

Rosé has earned its reputation as the ultimate spring sipper, and for good reason. Straddling the line between red and white, it's magnificently versatile – whether you're grilling prawns, searing tuna, or simply enjoying the afternoon sun with friends.

But let's talk about the Hunter's signature variety: Hunter Valley Semillon remains our most compelling spring wine, and 2025 is shaping up as another stellar vintage. Naturally low in alcohol and bracingly fresh when young, it pairs magnificently with Sydney rock oysters, local prawns, and delicate white fish. Cellared examples – with their evolved

producers are crafting styles that range from lean and mineral to generous and textured. It's your reliable choice for everything from grilled snapper to creamy pasta, and it never fails to please a crowd.

Pinot Gris (or Grigio, depending on the winemaker's style) offers a perfect blend of crispness and fruit – think pear, apple, and honeydew melon. It's wonderfully food-friendly and handles everything from fresh salads to spicy Thai equally well.

While Verdelho thrives across Australia, some of the finest examples come from right here in the Hunter. With its tropical fruit notes and zippy freshness, it's brilliant with Vietnamese, Thai, or Malaysian cuisine, though it's equally satisfying on its own as the sun sets over the vines.

Sparkling wine needs no special occasion –though spring's arrival feels like reason enough to celebrate. The effervescence and bright acidity make it wonderfully refreshing, and it partners beautifully with oysters, prosciutto, soft cheeses, and lighter canapés at spring gatherings.

When it comes to reds, Pinot Noir leads the charge for warm-weather drinking. Elegant and food-friendly, it pairs superbly with duck, salmon, mushroom dishes, and charcuterie boards. A slight chill (cellar temperature or 20 minutes in the fridge) brings out its best.

Grenache is having a renaissance moment in Australian wine, and deservedly so. Light on its feet yet packed with flavour, it's tailor-made for pizza nights, Mediterranean mezze, and long conversations on warm evenings.

Sangiovese – the soul of Tuscany – has found a happy home in several Hunter vineyards. Pair it with tomato-based dishes, grilled vegetables, and olive oil-rich Italian fare, and you'll understand why it's such a natural fit for spring.

As you explore the Hunter Valley's cellar doors this season, we encourage you to be adventurous. Try a variety you've never encountered before. Ask the staff for their spring recommendations. You might discover your new seasonal favourite – and that's what makes this time of year so exciting for wine lovers.
