Circus Spectacular World's best acrobats descend on Newcastle for La Ronde

WORDS LIANE MORRIS | FEATURES WRITER IMAGES SOURCE STRUT & FRET

Newcastle’s annual love affair with Strut & Fret’s Spiegeltent continues this year with their latest sensation of circus, cabaret and spectacle, La Ronde. Forming the jewel in the crown of this year’s New Annual festival, La Ronde takes over Civic Park from 5 September to 5 October, fresh from 14 five-star reviews at

its Adelaide Fringe World Premiere and followup Darwin season. Prepare to be bedazzled, Newy, because this isn’t just a show - it’s a fullblown sensory experience!

International production powerhouse Strut & Fret is known for its unique brand of edge-ofyour-seat theatre hits, such as Blanc de Blanc, Blanc de Blanc Encore, and LIMBO. It has become a global success story, with shows concurrently running at permanent venues in

London and Brisbane’s West End. Their latest creation, La Ronde, brings together some of the planet’s most daring variety artists. Expect hair-hanging and mouth-hanging aerialists, flying-pole sensations, and vivacious European cabaret performers performing right above, around, and even among you.

According to producer Jess Copas, La Ronde is the crème de la crème of European, highly skilled circus talent, meets sultry cabaret,

but with a disco soundtrack energy. It’s also been created for audiences to experience in the round - on all four sides of the tent with a 360-degree view of the show that happens in, above and around the spectators.

“The big difference Newcastle will notice this year is that the set is a lot more intimate with people literally sitting 360 degrees around the action,” said Jess.

“It brings people closer than ever before to the action and creates an intimate connection between the performer and the audience. It makes the experience very special. And with so many aerials in the show, there’s a lot of looking up in awe - there really isn’t a bad seat in the house! It’s just one ‘wow’ moment after another, and accompanied by the vocals and soundtrack, it’s an incredibly uplifting night out for everyone!

“You’ll feel a bit of everything throughout the show - it’s intimate and elegant one moment, highenergy and hysterical the next! The skills performed in La Ronde truly the best in the world; they do things I didn’t even know were possible. It’s one of the most incredible casts I’ve worked with.”

apparatus of each of the artists into the show. Our artists are like family; we grow and flex together, meaning our productions remain fresh and unique.

Director Scott Maidment has assembled a cast of exceptional international performers, many of whom are making their Australian debut, in a high-energy fusion of circus, cabaret, comedy, and burlesque.

“We work with our cast to develop the acts that make it into the show. We go into rehearsal before each season starts and workshop the

Each act is wrapped in Strut & Fret’s signature flair—meticulous costuming, clever lighting, and seamless pacing that blends highadrenaline moments with playful interludes. The vintage, one-hundred-year-old Dutch Spiegeltent itself becomes part of the magic, with its mirrored walls, the warmth of timber, and intimate seating drawing the audience into the performance. With plush velvet drapes, air-conditioned comfort, and a central stage

that ensures no one is far from the action, the venue amplifies the show’s electricity and adds to the European ambience of decadent cabaret. Stepping into the Spiegeltent is like transporting yourself across time and space into a magical world that takes you out of your ordinary life for just a few hours.

Each year that the Spiegeltent lands in Newcastle, it draws a team of Novocastrian crew members keen to help set it up. Just like a giant Meccano set, there are unbelievably no tools, no screws, no nails, no bolts and no machinery required. Originally, all the pieces could be lifted by one person; today, it takes less than a dozen people to erect the tent.

“There is this wonderful sense of romantic achievement that people feel when they are a part of this traditional process,” said Scott. “It’s a beautiful heritage piece that people love to work on. It does take a lot of maintenance, though. There is always something being worked on and repaired.”

No expense is spared, and as with all Strut & Fret shows, there are very high-quality production values. The tent concept may remind audiences of a circus, but that’s where the comparison ends because the tent is so unique, extravagant, and romantic. Cabaret and variety are reminiscent of burlesque and fringe shows, but these shows sit well above that level of performance and are not burlesque. The content may be adults only, but it’s risqué, not rude, and the skill of the artists is world-class.

“The skill and talent of our performers, my creative team and our high production values set it way above the level of fringe or circus, and our shows can be seen again and again, with something new to enjoy every time you come.”

Newcastle audiences are very familiar with the Spiegeltent magic, having seen many shows multiple times, and La Ronde will not disappoint. La Ronde combines aesthetic elegance and heart-stopping spectacle with playful, interactive moments. The show’s energy is relentless, moving seamlessly between high-energy acrobatics, comedic relief, and cabaret charm. The audience’s reactions are just as much a part of the performance as the acts themselves, creating a festive and inclusive atmosphere where everyone is swept up in the fun. Don’t expect a narrative thread, this is pure spectacle – the best of the best, some of the most talented performers in the world, entertaining, thrilling, awe-inspiring, sexy and mesmerising!

Among the headline performers that Maidment has scoured the world for is Sergiy Mishchurenko, on an aerial/trapeze pole. Sergiy appeared on Romania’s Got Talent in 2024 and competed in the 44th Festival Mondial du Cirque de Demain in Paris this year, the world's largest circus competition. He is a highly accomplished dancer, ranging from contemporary to hip-hop. Born in Ukraine and now living in Germany, it’s his first time performing in Australia. He’s considered a master of the flying pole, exhibiting feats of strength and flexibility that are hard to believe.

Joining him on stage is fellow Ukrainian, also living in Germany, and new to Australia, Diana Bondarenko, Her gravity-defying aerial artistry has enchanted audiences across the show’s debut tour. Her performances, described as spellbinding, combine precision, strength, and elegance, leaving audiences breathless. It’s her pouting, red-clad visage you see on the posters for La Ronde

From Belarus comes the incredible Polina, who holds the Guinness World Records title for the most spins in 30 seconds while suspended by her hair. She has performed in Dubai, France, Germany, and Switzerland, and this is her first time in Australia. Another aerialist, Felipe Reyes, hangs by his mouth! A Colombian who lives in the UK and performed at the London Olympic Games Opening Ceremony, he has toured six continents: Asia, Africa, Europe, North America, South America, plus Oceania.

José Carlos Campos, originally from Gran Canaria, one of Spain’s Canary Islands off northwestern Africa, is a trained ballet dancer, an experienced musical theatre performer and has worked as a master of ceremonies at some of the best cabarets in the world, including Crazy Horse Paris, Lío Ibiza, the Carnival of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and Nomad Croatia. He brings all this talent, comedy and charm to La Ronde as the show’s ‘clown’.

Keeping us all dancing in our seats and bringing the upbeat melodies to life is Geniris, a dazzling vocal performance artist from the Dominican Republic, currently living in Spain. Her impressive career includes performances in Disney’s The Lion King musical, appearances on major TV shows such as The Voice, and starring roles in high-end dinner shows, including Billionaire Dubai. Geniris was scouted by Scott Maidment via her Instagram account and has only been in the country for a month.

“I have fallen in love with Australia,” said Geniris.

“The green trees, the nature, remind me of home and make me a little homesick sometimes. But the cast usually eat dinner together each night, and I video call my Mum, so I’m super happy. This experience is

completely new to me. I’m used to performing with other dancers rather than acrobats, and my usual style is Salsa, Latin, Jennifer Lopez – some of the songs I perform in the show I’d never heard before. It’s been amazing though, and my favourite song in the show is I’m Coming Out by Diana Ross. I also love my sexy red costumes!”

The only Australian in the cast is Adam Malone, who hails from Gosford on the Central Coast and now lives in Melbourne when he’s not on tour. Adam is a master of the Washington Trapeze, an extremely rare skill that few in the world can perform. It’s basically balancing on a trapeze bar on your head! Adam has previously performed in Blanc de Blanc and has been performing professionally since the age of 13.

“I grew up around gymnastics,” said Adam. “My sister was an elite gymnast, so I have been doing that since before I can remember. When I was young, a circus came to town and set up a training space, and I fell into it. I ended

do hoops. I’ve developed my own style – kind of an aggressive burlesque flavour to it. And I still do my own make-up. It’s a creative outlet for me, and I mix it up all the time with something different every night!

"I’m super excited to perform in Newcastle – it feels like home. "

“With so many of my family members there, it’s always special, but this time even more so, as my grandmother can’t travel and hasn’t seen me perform in years. Having her in the audience makes this show especially meaningful.”

Reviews from Adelaide say that Adam’s performance has the audience in stitches, performing physical comedy at its finest, in high heels no less, and dialling up the raunchier side of the show (he may get his kit off!).

“It’s important to stay as fit as possible,” said Adam.

“We perform every day, which is a workout and practice all at the same time, but I’m also into gym training, staying fit and strong and building muscle is important, especially as I’m getting older now at 33!”

up travelling and performing with the Moscow Family Circus from the age of 13 - I didn’t run away to the circus as such, because my mother always supported me, but I guess it was a bit like that.

“I gave it up in my early 20s and became a make-up artist. I found myself part of the Queer scene, performing in drag at nightclubs, and realised it was a full-circle moment. I took myself off to study at NICA – the National Institute of Circus Arts in Melbourne, and studied under a legendary Chinese master, Mr Lu, who taught me the ‘Imperial Secrets’ of acrobatics, particularly the Washington Trapeze. It’s a rare performance skill and very unusual to see it in a cabaret setting, as it often involves much heavier equipment, but I’ve got my own gear. I’m also one of the few men who

This year, in addition to the fabulousness of La Ronde, the Spiegeltent will also provide the venue for two nights of comedy on 13 and 14 September, featuring Merrick Watts. An Idiot’s Guide to Wine: Volume Two promises new jokes, new wines, same idiot! A brand-new show from Australia’s favourite comedian slash wine expert.

The List called La Ronde “all killer, no filler,” – it’s an edge-of-your-seat extravaganza guaranteed to leave you breathless, and you won’t want to miss it. Tickets for La Ronde start at $70 for previews, with General Admission $80. Premium admission is available for $115. The running time is approximately 90 minutes, and the show is recommended for audiences 15 years and older. The Spiegeltent bar opens one hour before each performance, so get there early and enjoy a drink. With no allocated seating, it’s first-come, first-served, so arrive together to sit together.

The PACC Art Gallery buzzed with excitement as record numbers of families, longtime fans, and local media turned out for the opening of Ted Prior's Grug retrospective exhibition on Saturday, 27 September. The beloved Australian icon received a hero's welcome at Performance Arts Culture Cessnock, with author and illustrator Ted Prior himself making the day even more special

by meeting fans and personally signing copies of his cherished Grug books.

The loveable, shaggy creature who first sprouted from a Burrawang tree in the Australian bush in 1979 continues to capture hearts across generations. This major exhibition, running until 15 November 2025, traces the imaginative journey of Australia's most cherished children's book character through original artworks, early sketches, storyboards, and behind-the-scenes treasures that reveal how Ted Prior brought Grug to life.

Children and adults alike enjoyed the opening day festivities, which included the activity corner and DIY craft activities in the Makers Space. Guests were treated to celebratory bubbles, generously provided by Lisa McGuigan Wines, adding to the joyful atmosphere of the celebration.

"Grug transcends being merely a children's character—he's become a true cultural icon," said Joseph Turrin, PACC Exhibitions Coordinator.

"We're honoured to celebrate Ted Prior's enduring legacy and his remarkable contribution to generations of Australian readers. This exhibition serves as a joyful tribute to a small character with an enormous heart."

The heart-warming display features original illustrations and storyboards by Newcastle region artist Ted Prior, alongside captivating puppets

from the renowned Windmill Theatre Company. Visitors gain fascinating insights into the creative process behind the beloved series, with Grug's gentle humour, insatiable curiosity, and clever problem-solving adventures continuing to enchant young readers today.

Interactive experiences invite ongoing visitor engagement throughout the exhibition. Families can leave notes in Grug's letterbox, create their own Grug finger puppets, and participate in Make Your Own Grug Plush sessions and "DIY Drop-in Felt Finger Puppets" workshops. Adults can enjoy a nostalgic journey through the illustrations and stories that have shaped countless childhoods.

This free exhibition offers ample time to wander the gallery, engage with the artwork, and explore the world of Grug in all its warmth and whimsy. NEW ANNUAL

new theatre experience bringing real Novocastrian stories to life.

Newcastle Ocean Baths 27 Sep—4 Oct

New Annual Returns to our Streets, Stages and Ocean Baths!

City of Newcastle's flagship arts festival, New Annual Festival, now in its fifth year, will take over the streets, stages and iconic landmarks of our city for ten days of art, music and ideas from 26 September to 5 October. It will showcase local people, places and performances alongside some of the best theatre, art and music from Australia and overseas.

With a mission to raise the awareness of Newcastle as a culturally creative city both nationally and internationally, the festival is now hitting its stride with a new Festival Director at the helm. Tory Loudon was appointed as the New Annual Festival Director in January of this year and has moved to Newcastle to steer the festival for the next three years. Ms Loudon joins New Annual on the back of an impressive 20-year career in the arts, media, and creative industries, including senior roles at leading institutions including Sydney Opera House, Vivid Sydney, Carriageworks, Creative Australia, The Guardian, Bangarra Dance Theatre, Australian Dance Theatre, and most recently as the Head of Public Programs and Engagement at the Sydney Theatre Company. It says something about the festival and its reputation that it was able to attract a director of such outstanding calibre, willing to invest three years of her life into the next evolution of the festival and the cultural landscape of our city. And she’s very excited about it.

“I’ve been coming to Newcastle since I was born on holidays with my family,” said Ms Loudon. “And I’ve been watching New Annual over the past four years with interest. I already had an idea of the artists and the performing arts scene here, and I’m thrilled to be working with such talent. Newcastle really does have a lot of creatives living here.

“I’ve worked at some of Australia’s biggest cultural institutions, and I’ve programmed huge multi-artform festivals. It’s an amazing job, but it’s a big responsibility, and I found that I was missing the close connection to the artists. My career began as an independent producer, managing artists and musicians, and New Annual gives me an opportunity to return

to my grassroots, creating art from scratch, commissioning new works, connecting with the community and curating the stories of our place in the world.

“Supporting Newcastle's creative community has been one of the real strengths of New Annual since it was established by City of Newcastle in 2021. I'm proud to continue this tradition in 2025, with over 70% of this year's program showcasing Newcastle’s artistic community. We have commissioned new works from Newcastle artists this year, focusing on telling Newcastle stories in locations that are uniquely designed or chosen for a particular artwork or performance.

"This year's festival invites people to come and play, see their city differently and discover something new."

"It was important to create that sense of a festival hub by taking art to where people are already, to the streets, parks and even the Baths of Newcastle. I look forward to seeing you there."

Familiar landscapes, including Camp Shortland, Nobbys Beach and The Station, will be temporarily transformed into unexpected hubs of art and culture, while audiences will be invited to Meet Me at the Baths and SOAK up unique outdoor theatre and live music experiences at the iconic Newcastle Ocean Baths.

The 2025 program features 23 signature events that span music, theatre, dance, visual arts, and public art. More than 60% of the events are free and family-friendly.

Councillor Jenny Barrie, Chair of City of Newcastle's Community and Culture Strategic Advisory Committee, said New Annual is a festival for the entire community.

"City of Newcastle is proud to support and invest in arts and cultural opportunities, community pride and local identity through events such as New Annual," Cr Barrie said. "With a predominance of free and low-cost events, the festival provides a valuable way to make art and culture accessible to more people within our community, while also acting as a drawcard for visitors from across our region and beyond."

Member for Newcastle Tim Crakanthorp said events such as New Annual help celebrate the vibrant cultural diversity of local communities while also driving economic growth.

“New Annual continues to strengthen Newcastle’s position as a centre for art, supporting around 1,500 visiting and local artists and attracting more than 121,500 visitors to the city during its first four years," Mr Crakanthorp said.

New Annual is proudly funded by the NSW Government in association with Transport for NSW Open Streets and Permit/Plug/Play Pilot programs, Multicultural NSW Stronger Together grant, Create NSW and the Destination NSW Regional Event Fund. The University of Newcastle, Equip Multimedia and Newcastle Art Gallery are presenting partners of the 2025 event.

The festival will kick off on 26 September with a vibrant First Night Art Party in Laman Street, celebrating the community's first glimpse of the expanded Newcastle Art Gallery. It’s a free night of music, movement and art, featuring high-energy sets from Haiku Hands, Kira Puru and Devaura, roving performances, and stunning art projections. The Newcastle Art Gallery's façade becomes a canvas for shared storytelling. Celebrating new commissions by First Nations artists, this one-night-only experience showcases projected animations co-created by Art Thinking with local children, lighting up the building with community, culture, and creativity. It’s a street party with something to delight everyone from 5pm to 9pm.

Perhaps no other events epitomise the intent and scope of the festival more than those scheduled to take place at the Newcastle Ocean Baths. Leading the way is local independent theatre company Whale Chorus with their new work, commissioned by the festival, Meet Me at the Baths. Written by Ang Collins and directed by Janie Gibson, the piece is site-specific and has been inspired by the collected stories of the Newcastle community

as they relate to the Baths. Local stories of love, loss, healing and change sparkle against the stunning backdrop of the Baths.

“We began the process by collecting the stories of the locals who use the Baths,” said Janie Gibson. “We were overwhelmed by the response. The stories we were told are beautiful, touching, wacky, and full of big life moments. There were so many that we could write a novel! The Baths are a truly special place for many people. We took their stories and used them to inspire a work of fiction, a new play that journeys through the spectrum of human experience, set in our own iconic landmark of the Newcastle Ocean Baths.”

Audiences will sit on the concrete bleachers that the Baths are known for and don headphones so that they can become immersed in the stories and gorgeous live soundscapes. The ensemble of four actors will seem part of the audience at first before they dive deep into serendipitous moments, nostalgic memories and hilarious hijinks in a tidal wave of life’s big changes.

“We feel incredibly lucky to be a part of the festival,” said Janie. “We’re very happy to have been included. We want to give this show back to the community. Their stories changed us in the process of developing this work, and we hope that others will view this beloved space with new eyes as a result, feeling more

connected to the space and one another. It’s a show for everyone aged 10+ and will run every day of the festival at 11am and 2pm. It’s fully accessible and designed so that the space can continue to be used by the general public. Bring your cozzies for a swim before or after the show!”

Complementing this new play is an outdoor photography exhibition by Lee Illfield and Edwina Richards. The Bathers: Magical Memories features the people and stories of the Newcastle Ocean Baths. Tales of mermaids and moonbows, skinny dips and first kisses, the exhibition explores ‘magical memory’ and reimagines these stories, half-remembered and wholly felt through the lenses of these two unique Novacastrian photographers.

It was while enjoying a swim at Newcastle Ocean Baths at sunset that Festival Director Tory Loudon was inspired to program SOAK: Live at the Baths.

“I swim at the Baths a lot,” said Ms Loudon. “I looked out across the water as the sun was setting and thought what a magical place this would be to hear live music as the people of the community enjoy this special public place.”

SOAK: Live at the Baths is five nights of sunset music performances at the Newcastle Ocean Baths curated by local musician and manager Tim Levinson (Urthboy and Elefant Traks) and featuring local and globally

Also at the Museum is Night Night, which allows guests to witness the creation of a heartwarming cinematic adventure on stage. Blending puppets, animation and DIY digital magic, witness the onscreen story while experiencing the behindthe-scenes artistry in a cinematically playful, transcendent adventure. Both of these shows are presented by one of the best theatre companies in Australia, The Last Great Hunt (WA).

All the way from Ireland is the multiaward-winning

Sunday's Child, an Irish theatre company run by Eva O'Connor and Hildegard Ryan. They’re bringing their show Chicken to University House. It’s billed as a one-woman show that is bonkers and unbelievably brilliant.

First Rhythms features First Nations composer and musician Adam Manning, who joins forces with the renowned contemporary ensemble Australian Art Orchestra for a performance that reimagines clapsticks, First Nations rhythms, and visual art to explore the living pulse of Country at the Harold Lobb Concert Hall at the Conservatorium of Music.

Lighting up Beaumont Street, Hamilton, with the sights, sounds and flavours of the world will be Global Gathering. Led by MCs Australian journalist, author and screenwriter Benjamin Law and Chinese Australian writer, comedian, and curator Jennifer Wong, the event will feature performances across two stages, including cooking demonstrations, family-friendly workshops, live music and dance. With so many of our public spaces being activated during the festival, it wouldn’t be right without the Spiegeltent taking pride of place in Civic Park. Step into the atmospheric Spiegeltent and surrender to the intoxicating world of La Ronde. At the centre of this heady cocktail of circus, live music and comedy will be groundbreaking headliners, world-class provocateurs and captivating raw energy direct from the European underground.

It's time to explore our creative city and the talented artists who call it home, and to immerse yourself in stories and connect with community in a new way. So much of it is free, family-friendly, fun, thought-provoking, moving and fascinating.

A Hidden Gem by the Sea

Perched above Newcastle’s harbour with one of the city’s best views, Fort Scratchley Function Centre is quietly carving out a name for itself as a place where food, history and community come together. While many locals know the headland for its military past, fewer have stepped inside the contemporary, light-filled venue now hosting

everything from weddings and celebrations to corporate gatherings – all with food that puts the region’s best food on show.

Take the oysters, for example. Port Stephens farmer Lucas Ashley of G&D Oysters supplies the shellfish served at the venue. For him, it’s all about the subtle differences in flavour.

“The flavour really depends on where the oyster finishes,” Lucas explains.

“Closer to the sea, it’s saltier. Further up the creek, you get creamier notes. We try to keep them as close to wild as possible – that’s when you get the best flavour.”

That attention to provenance is what defines the kitchen at the venue. Of course, the backdrop doesn’t hurt. Wide windows frame sweeping views of the city and coastline, while the alfresco deck catches sea breezes perfect for sunset cocktails. Inside, the atmosphere strikes a balance between modern and relaxed – a surprising contrast to the fort’s sandstone walls and storied past just steps away.

Named a finalist in the 2025 NSW Awards for Excellence for Event / Convention Centre Caterer, Fort Scratchley Function Centre is being recognised not just for its setting but for the care it brings to every plate. A hidden gem by the sea, it’s proof that Newcastle’s culinary story is as much about celebrating where we are as it is about what’s on the table.

Planning ahead for 2026? There are a few delicious extras on offer – from a complimentary oyster bar or cocktails on arrival for social events, to a complimentary one-hour drinks and canapés upgrade post-conference. Contact the Fort Scratchley event team for details.

With sweeping ocean views and unrivalled outlooks across the city, coastline and harbour, host your next event at one of Newcastle’s most distinctive venues.

• Modern, light-filled venue

• Panoramic ocean views

• Capacity from 40 to 200

• Free onsite parking

Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! More Mamma Mia!

WORDS LIANE MORRIS | FEATURES WRITER IMAGES PETER STOOP

Slip on your platform boots and say a big “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!” to Newcastle’s next big night out, because Mamma Mia! is set to light up the Civic Theatre this October. Celebrating 25 dazzling years of standing ovations around the world, the ABBA-fuelled musical promises romance, comedy, and a whole lot of disco-tinged joy. In short: the party of the year is about to hit town, and everyone’s invited.

Since its debut in London’s West End in 1999, the exhilarating smash hit has become a global phenomenon, thrilling over 70 million people worldwide. The sunny, funny tale of a mother, a daughter, and three possible dads on a Greek

island idyll, all unfolding to the magic of ABBA’s timeless pop masterpiece, has also inspired two record-breaking films: Mamma Mia! The Movie and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.

Now it’s Newcastle’s turn once again. Featuring 22 ABBA songs performed live, Mamma Mia! will wow audiences at the Civic Theatre from 11 October in a strictly limited two-week season. Demand has been so overwhelming that six shows have already sold out, one is down to limited tickets, and producers have added a final extra performance on Sunday, 26 October at 1pm to cope with demand.

“It’s pure joy from start to finish,” says producer Daniel Stoddart, CEO of Stoddart Entertainment Group (SEG) and Artistic Director of The Very Popular Theatre Company (VPTC).

“An explosion of music, love, and nostalgia that will have everyone dancing in the aisles. With its unforgettable ABBA hits and heartwarming story, Mamma Mia! is the perfect celebration of theatre, and I can't wait for audiences to experience the magic, energy, and fun that we know this production brings to the stage.”

Australia has always had a special relationship with ABBA. From the frenzy of their 1977 tour, immortalised in ABBA: The Movie, to record-breaking runs of Mamma Mia! across the country, our stages and hearts have never stopped singing along.

In 2019, VPTC brought Mamma Mia! to Newcastle to mark its 20th anniversary, right on cue. The production was embraced wholeheartedly, sweeping up multiple City of

Newcastle Drama Awards (CONDAs), including Best Musical Production, Excellence in Choreography (Rachel Wilson), Best Supporting Female Actor in a Musical (Angela McKeown), and the coveted Best Ensemble Award. Judges praised it as “a rollicking, infectious, colourful romp that had audiences dancing in the aisles and standing in ovation.”

Six years later, the company returns to celebrate the musical’s silver jubilee with even bigger ambition.

“The last season was such a joy,” Stoddart says. “Newcastle truly embraced it like the big party it is. This city loves to celebrate, and Mamma Mia! is the ultimate celebration. We all need to laugh, dance, and let loose a little right now, and there’s no better way to do that than with the world’s most loved feel-good musical.”

The VPTC’s production operates on a proam model—a hybrid that combines the polish of professional performers and creatives with the energy and heart of emerging local actors. It’s a model that’s proving essential for regions like Newcastle, bridging the gap between community theatre and the fully professional industry.

“This model is so important,” says director Erin James, who also helmed the 2019 production.

“It gives young performers and emerging artists skills that they can’t develop in any other way. Just seeing the professional actors work, witnessing their process, is invaluable. It builds connections across the industry and makes theatre less elitist.”

Despite SEG now staging major professional touring productions, the pro-am model is still important to Stoddart.

“Education is at the heart of everything we do,” he said.

“We’re committed to empowering emerging creatives, on stage and off. "

“Newcastle doesn’t yet have a professional theatre industry, but we’re working tirelessly to change that. Our region is full of incredible talent, and while many of them have not yet worked professionally, giving them the chance to be part of a high-quality, professionalstandard production is invaluable.

“These experiences allow them to refine their craft, showcase their talents, and learn what it means to work in a professional rehearsal room and production process. Most of them have

day jobs, but through this process they get a glimpse into what would be expected if they made the leap into full-time professional work. That opportunity to learn, grow, and understand the industry is priceless.”

And the benefits extend far beyond the stage.

“Almost 10% of our audiences come from outside Newcastle,” he explains. “That means a real tourism boost to the local economy. Restaurants, hotels, and the night economy all benefit. People often don’t realise that these shows are actually created right here. They cost over a million dollars to stage and set the benchmark for live theatre in the Hunter.”

SEG also ensures performers are recognised for their efforts.

“We’re very proud to be in a position to offer all of the cast a small financial remuneration for their contribution,” Stoddart adds. “This will be the first time a local company has done this on a mainstage Civic Theatre show since Les Misérables in 2001. Our ultimate goal is to pay fully professional rates, and we’re working hard toward that.”

Erin James, whose directing credits include Chess starring Silvie Paladino and David Harris, and Superstars with Marina Prior and Chloe Zuel, and who is Head of Music Theatre at the University of Adelaide, brings deep experience to the role. But even with the familiarity of directing Mamma Mia!

before, she sees this production as something brand new.

“It’s a different cast,” she says. “We’ve taken the skeleton of last time and filled it with new people, new energy. Same story, but it brings an invigorating lift that’s wonderful to see and experience.”

For James, the show’s appeal is eternal. “How could you not love this music? Our family has had a long affiliation with it; our kids can sing every word. This is a show that you can’t leave without a smile on your face. It’s the very definition of feel-good theatre.” Is it daunting to return to such a beloved production? “Always,” she admits.

“There’s a lot of expectation, but it’s not just about success. It’s about supporting and encouraging everyone involved - hundreds of people, from cast and crew to costumes and set. What I love about theatre is that we all come together with a common goal: to tell the story in the best way possible.”

At the heart of this year’s production is Erin Cornell, stepping into the iconic role of Donna Sheridan for the first time. A Victorian College of the Arts graduate, Cornell has played leading roles across the globe, from Grizabella in Cats to Elphaba in Wicked (Japan). She’s also appeared on The Voice Australia and continues to pursue her singer-songwriter career.

“Donna is so colourful and layered,” Cornell says. “She’s imperfect, earthy, hard-working, and authentic. I feel like I can give her integrity and

portray her with care and understanding. And the songs she gets to sing are a singer-actor’s dream.”

Her love of ABBA runs deep.

“Let’s just say I had an ABBA-themed birthday party when I was ten,” she laughs. “I went as Agnetha, of course. My friend and I would dress up as ABBA most weekends, get her brothers to hold torches as spotlights, and sing their songs all day long. It’s been a long love affair.”

Playing opposite her as Sam Carmichael is Matt Edwards, a WAAPA graduate whose credits include Cats (The Really Useful Company), My Fair Lady (Opera Australia), Scooby Doo Live! (Life Like Touring) and who toured professionally with Mamma Mia! in 2017–18.

“In that production I was in the ensemble, covering Sam and Bill,” Edwards recalls. “After a year with the show, I felt a strong connection to the characters. It’s nice to revisit Sam eight years later, with more life experience.”

He describes Mamma Mia! as “pure joy to work on. You finish with the Megamix, the audience is on their feet singing and dancing, and you leave the theatre every night in a great mood. It’s exhilarating.”

Rehearsals have been a unique process for both Cornell and Edwards, who live interstate and have been flying in for intensive rehearsal periods.

“It was an immediate connection with the cast,” Cornell says. “Especially The Dynamos and the dads. Matt and I were already friends from Cats, so the trust and chemistry were instant.”

“The other dads are wonderful. The show relies on their friendly, bantery relationship, and I think we established that very quickly,” adds Edward.

Both share a fond offstage memory: during a past Cats tour, Cornell, Edwards, and his wife (also in the cast) spent months together as off-stage swings.

“Erin became an honorary member of our family planning committee,” Edwards laughs.

“She was there for every conversation about where to live, baby scans, and even names. She probably knew more about our birth plan than some relatives!”

“The music endures because the lyrics speak to everyone,” he says. “The themes are universal. And the women’s voices - Agnetha and Frida - are iconic. Everyone of a certain generation knows those voices.”

For Wilson, the highlight is accompanying Cornell in The Winner Takes It All.

“People are going to be astounded by her voice,” he says. “In fact, Erin and I are working on a little surprise that will hopefully be released around the time of the show.”

And if audiences sing along? “For the most part I’ll smile,” he says.

“I love seeing people knowing every word, because you know, ‘You can dance, you can jive, having the time of your life!’”

With a cast of 31 performers, including 19 young people in the ensemble, and 15 performances across just two weeks, Mamma Mia! is set to be one of the city’s biggest cultural events of 2025.

If ABBA is the secret star of Mamma Mia!, then Musical Director Dan Wilson is its custodian. Head Teacher of Creative & Performing Arts at Lambton High School, Wilson has decades of experience conducting productions and concerts, including Mary Poppins, Billy Elliot, Jersey Boys, Mamma Mia!, School of Rock, Jesus Christ Superstar and most recently SUPERSTARS, which is now a concert series. Dan has arranged music for artists such as Silvie Paladino, Marina Prior, Debra Bryne and Emma Pask and served as Musical Director for concerts celebrating Alanis Morissette, Phil Collins, and ABBA. He was also Musical Director for VPTC’s 2019 Mamma Mia!

When asked if this year’s production would feature a live band, Wilson laughed and said, “Abbasolutely! Nine musicians and four keyboard players, which for me is heaven. The parts are transcribed directly from ABBA’s

with new enhancements, but here’s the reality: there are only around 1,000 seats left across the season. It could be a decade before Newcastle gets another chance to see this show. This isn’t just a musical; it’s Newcastle’s ultimate party to get you ready for summer.”

Or, as director Erin James puts it: “It’s the very definition of feel-good theatre. You can’t leave without a smile on your face. The last ten minutes are all singing, all dancing, a complete endorphin rush."

"It’s a giant party, and it’s for everybody.”

As the Civic Theatre prepares to welcome thousands of fans, Mamma Mia! offers more than just a jukebox of ABBA hits. It’s a story of love, laughter, family, and friendship. It’s also a showcase of Newcastle’s growing theatre scene -its talent, its ambition, and its ability to stage world-class productions right here at home. With tickets flying and an extra performance added, the message is clear: Newcastle is ready to dance, jive, and have the time of its life.

So dust off your sequins, warm up your vocal cords, and get ready for an unforgettable night. Because when it comes to theatre that’s as heartwarming as it is exhilarating, Mamma Mia! is the winner that takes it all. Visit www.mammamianewcastle.com.au for more info and tickets!

Your Pride, Your Truth

Newcastle's Biggest Rainbow Celebration Returns

WORDS LIANE MORRIS IMAGES SOURCE NEWCASTLE PRIDE FESTIVAL

Joyously bursting into its sixth year, the 2025 Newcastle Pride Festival, from Friday, 3 October to Sunday, 26 October, promises a whole month of an electrifying celebration of love, diversity, and unity. From its glitterdrenched launch at Flamingos Live to a parade 'bigger, bolder, and balloonier,' and their signature free, family-friendly Fair Day, the 2025 festival is a radiant affirmation of this year’s theme of Your Pride, Your Truth

The festival plays a crucial role in raising awareness and promoting acceptance within the broader community, ensuring that the voices and stories of LGBTQIA+ individuals are heard and celebrated. It aims to create a safer, more inclusive future for all, regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation.

The vision of the organisation behind the festival is to empower current and future generations to be their authentic selves, feel accepted, find their voice, and be proud of who they are. Founded in 2018 by Lee-Anne McDougall and Ivan Skaines, Newcastle Pride began as a small three-event festival in Foreshore Park that drew 5,000 people to its first Fair Day. The overwhelming response confirmed the need for a dedicated, inclusive

space where the LGBTQIA+ community could connect, celebrate, and be visible.

“Newcastle Pride Festival is about more than just celebration, it’s about visibility, solidarity, and making space for every voice in our community,” said President Lee-Anne McDougall.

Newcastle Pride has grown into a major annual festival, attracting over 13,000 people to Fair Day in 2024, and is powered by a passionate volunteer team committed to creating safe, respectful, and empowering spaces for all - especially LGBTQIA+ youth. The event is supported by local businesses and community organisations, including long-term Festival Principal Partner Coles.

“It’s an honour to be part of Newcastle Pride once again,” said a Coles spokesperson.

“We are proud to be recognised as a Platinum Employer at the 2025 AWEI Awards and to stand proudly with the LGBTQIA+ community.”

Krys Sutton, Marketing and PR Manager for Newcastle Pride, has seen a dip in sponsorship and funding this year.

“We are a non-profit organisation that relies fully on volunteers, sponsorships and grants,” said Krys.

“We suspect that the US Government's stance on DEI has had some effect, and local businesses are tightening their belts. Regardless, it’s exciting to see continued support from

Hunter Water and new partners like the University of Newcastle and Hyphen Health come on board as Fair Day Sponsors.”

Kicking off the festival with a glitterbombed bang, The Leather Lounge storms into Flamingos Live on Friday 3 October for its exclusive Australian premiere. Fresh from wowing Glastonbury, international cabaret sensation Leather Lungs leads a no-holdsbarred night of outrageous drag, powerhouse vocals, filthy comedy, and rule-breaking circus. This is Newcastle Pride’s official 2025 headliner - and it’s set to be utterly unmissable.

Across the first weekend, keep the kids enchanted with Drag Storytime and the Kids Rainbow Disco at Bernie’s Bar on Saturday, 4 October. Hosted by the fabulous Sticky Waffles, Drag Storytime brings books to life with vibrant costumes and captivating storytelling, before the little ones hit the dance floor with sequins, superhero capes, and sparkly sneakers, all encouraged!

This free, safe, and welcoming space celebrates LGBTQIA+ families, allies, and all rainbow-loving kids under 12. And for those without little ones, head to Carrington Bowlo for Drag Music Bingo hosted by Kandii Rhinestone, with DJ Queerio on Sunday, October 5, from 12.30pm to 3pm, where they promise an afternoon of camp chaos and hilarious shenanigans.

The second weekend kicks off with Short ‘N’ Curlies at Event Cinemas Kotara on Friday, 10 October from 6 pm. Featuring short Queer films curated by Queer Screen, the $25 entry includes popcorn and a drink. Next day, Newcastle Pride Parade - Balloon, Bicycle, Walk -encourages everyone to turn the Newcastle foreshore into a sparkling sea of colour, creativity, and community. Round off the second weekend with a chilled-out experience, creating art on Sunday afternoon with a Creative Erotic Pottery Workshop with Wonder Mama.

One of the most meaningful events of the festival, the Pride Youth Formal for youth aged 12 - 17 at Bernie's, is held on Saturday, 18 October, from 3pm. This afternoon of unapologetic queer joy, featuring beats by DJ Queerio, is a safe space for LGBTQIA+ youth to show up, be loud, proud, and absolutely fabulous. On Sunday, October 19, head down to Slingtown Espresso at Islington from 10.30am for Espresso Yourself – a free event designed to foster connection.

The most highly anticipated event of the festival is Fair Day, taking place on Saturday, 25 October, from 11am to 6pm at Gregson Park in Hamilton, with the markets curated by Pride Partner Homegrown Markets.

“This year, we’re introducing a second stage dedicated to DJs, keeping the music and energy flowing all day,” said Krys. “There’s also Drag It Out, an exciting new drag competition, Coles will be hosting a lively bar, and the Children’s Entertainment Area will be packed with fun and games.”

Headlining this year’s event is the electrifying Jimi the Kween, and guiding the day’s festivities are crowd favourites Ms Danni Issues, Sexy Galaxy, Greg Gould, and Freddie Merkin. Vocal powerhouse performances by Greg Gould, Maeve Grant, and Alanna Sofia will be unforgettable, while families will delight in dancing along with The Quokkas Drag fans are in for a feast of fabulous talent. Highlights include the high-energy

showcase,

local stars Gucci and Rhea Listik, alongside special guest appearances from RuPaul royalty Molly Poppinz. Audiences can also look forward to performances by local icons Deirdre Doo, Trixxie Killder, and Kandii Rhinestone, with the always-entertaining Lou Thunderdust and Justinamood bringing the laughs as hosts of the Gay Gaymes.

The dazzling creations from Creative Creatures and breathtaking displays from Three Rings Aerial & Circus will deliver more spectacle throughout the day, and to keep everything buzzing, a stellar DJ lineup is locked in, with sets from DJ Eddie, DJ Gimmi Moore, DJ Lisa Anita, Vandoll, DJ Tiff, and DJ Queerio.

And of course, two much-loved traditions return: the ever-popular Lip Sync Competition, where local talent battles it out in a fun and fiery contest, and the Doggywood Parade, celebrating the city’s most glamorous, camp, and clever four-legged friends.

The festival finale goes out with a glittering bang at POOF DOOF + DYKE DOOF, the ultimate Denim & Diamonds afterparty on Saturday, 25 October at the Hamilton Station Hotel. Featuring high-octane performances from Vybe and Karna Ford (RuPaul’s Drag Race Downunder), Jimi the Kween, Danni Issues, George Dykeal, James Alexandr, Mama de Leche, Mama Medusa, and Nipslip. Legendary POOF DOOF beats will keep the dance floor moving from 7pm until 2am, closing out the 2025 Newcastle Pride Festival in spectacular queer style.

In addition to the events produced by Newcastle Pride, there are also a series of Associate Events, including the University of Newcastle, with a week of inclusive and creative events from 13–17 October, aiming to provide a safe, welcoming space for students and staff to celebrate LGBTQIA+ culture and connect with the community.

Additional Associate Events include Bernies Pride Night - Pride Monochrome on Saturday 11 October, I Can Tell by Chris McAllister (The Trans Comedian) at Bernies on 17 October, Pulse Climbing on October 17, Exploring IdentityMixed Media & Collage Work with Emma Clifton for young people aged 16 to 21 on 23 October at The Base, Hockey Pride Rounds at the Newcastle International Hockey Centre in Broadmeadow on 24 October and Out & Running from Glenrock on Sunday 26 October.

BLOOD, BETRAYAL AND GREEK GODS

This October, Newcastle audiences will have the opportunity to witness the Australian debut of Zinnie Harris’ award-winning modern adaptation of Aeschylus’ Oresteia - a Greek mythology that follows a family thrown into grief after the death of the eldest daughter.

Harris’ adaptation, This Restless House, begs the question, “What would it take for you to stab to death someone you loved so dearly?”

and courageously takes an originally malecentric piece of writing and places women at the centre.

Zinnie Harris' reimagining of the Oresteia opens with Agamemnon sacrificing his daughter to the gods; an act which sets in motion a bloody cycle of revenge, counterrevenge and family destruction. When he, in turn, is killed at the hands of his wife,

Clytemnestra, their daughter Electra takes up the mantle of avenging her father, continuing the bloodshed until she too must flee the furies that hold her captive until peace is ultimately found in the rule of law.

After several critically acclaimed productions, including the touring production of Secret Girl Stuff that received multiple award nominations as part of Melbourne Fringe Festival 2024, Newcastle-based production company Cats in the Cupboard Productions is proud to bring the Australian debut of this award-winning production to the Newcastle stage.

Directed by Mikaela Corrigan, this theatre production leaves nothing behind and takes a fearless approach to bringing prolific characters to life on the Newcastle stage. Corrigan’s direction takes the heightened nature of Greek mythology to new levels.

This Restless House embraces the bold and emphasises the unsettling nature of a family once bonded through love and endurance, that has become completely undone.

This Restless House premieres at the Playhouse, Civic Theatre on 15 October with a strictly limited season, closing 18 October. For tickets and more information, visit www.civictheatrenewcastle.com.au.

A VERY NEWY CHRISSY

Local Theatre Serves Up Holiday Heart with a Hunter Twist

It’s the week before Christmas and all throughout Newcastle… Betty and Trish are negotiating their first Christmas since their divorce!

Their grownup kids, Pax and Annabel, aren’t ready to give up their Christmas

Eve family traditions, but Betty wants to start something new. Pax doesn’t know which mum he should introduce his new girlfriend to first, and Annabel just wants someone to notice her. Meanwhile, at the Planning Department, Trish tries to wrangle her colleagues, Simmo and Joey, in the busy period before the Christmas shutdown. Simmo is looking for love in all the wrong places, and Joey is having feelings for someone who is most certainly not available.

And down on the street, where Myron collects loose change and bottles, everyone complains about the pothole in the middle of the road, but nobody will do anything about it.

As Christmas Eve approaches, it will take a miracle to give everyone what they want – but they might just get what they need.

A Very Newy Chrissy is a two-act play that blends a little ‘Love Actually’ with a distinctly Newcastle take on the Christmas season, featuring a diverse range of families and

friends, well-loved locations, and a joyful spirit that gets every Novocastrian in the mood for the holiday season.

Like all great festive stories, A Very Newy Chrissy captures the highs and lows that come when families gather around the holidays— the traditions we cling to, the tensions that simmer under the surface, and the unexpected moments of laughter and connection that remind us why we keep coming together. It’s heart, humour, and home-grown storytelling wrapped up with tinsel and a true community feel.

This UpStage at the Playhouse production, presented by One For The Road Productions, is the creative partnership of Bronwyn Sartori (director) and Nat Newman (writer). Bron is an actor, musician, producer and director, with a wealth of experience producing festivals and events. Nat is an internationally award-winning writer, actor, and creative writing coach.

“Our shared goal is to create local theatre that uplifts the voices of female, nonbinary and queer voices,” says Nat.

UpStage at the Playhouse is an initiative of Civic Theatre Newcastle for City of Newcastle. You can catch A Very Newy Chrissy from 6 to 15 November. For tickets and information, visit www.civictheatrenewcastle.com.au.

Wingham Music Festival Returns as Flood Recovery Celebration

READ ONLINE

The Wingham Music Festival is set to make a powerful comeback this November, transforming into a beacon of hope for communities still recovering from the devastating May floods that swept through the Manning River catchment.

Running from 21 to 23 November at Wingham Showground, this year's festival has been reimagined as a "Flood Recovery Celebration of Music, Community & Connection," bringing together acclaimed artists including Backsliders, The Badloves, Bill Chambers, Hat Fitz and Cara, Round Mountain Girls, and Blues Arcadia.

The May floods were catastrophic for the region, with over 700mm of rainfall in less than a week, causing the Manning River to surge to

record levels. More than 50,000 residents were forced to evacuate, with over 10,000 homes damaged and critical infrastructure destroyed, including Wingham's main water pipeline. Emergency services conducted 280 rescues with assistance from the Australian Defence Force.

In response to this community crisis, festival organisers secured government support to offer free three-day passes to residents in seven flood-affected postcodes. These tickets were quickly claimed by grateful locals eager for some much-needed celebration.

"We knew this year we needed something really special for the community," explains Festival Coordinator Donna Ballard.

"Being able to offer free tickets for those impacted by the flood is a great step in moving forward."

The artist lineup demonstrates remarkable solidarity with the community. Blues Arcadia extended their final 2025 tour to include Wingham, while Backsliders reserved November 23 specifically for the festival. As Dom Turner from Backsliders expressed, "Wingham truly feels like family."

Three-day passes are now available for purchase by visitors outside the affected areas, with proceeds supporting local recovery efforts. Any surplus funds will be donated to local business chambers, Rotary, and Lions Clubs to help rebuild lives and livelihoods across the Mid North Coast.

Single-day tickets will be released after the October long weekend, with a second round of artist announcements expected in early November.

The festival represents more than entertainment—it's a statement of resilience and community spirit, welcoming music lovers from across Australia to show solidarity with flood-affected communities while enjoying three days of exceptional live music.

World Premiere Comedy Exposes Media's Moral Maze

#This is Not Journalism (#TINJ) is hailed as an urgent comedy about truth, news and alternative facts. A powder keg 75-minute comedy drama written and directed by Ross Mueller for some of Newcastle’s finest

actors, including Philip McGrath and Mark Pegler, #TINJ is presented by UpStage at The Playhouse (Newcastle Civic Theatre) from Friday 26 September until Saturday 4 October.

Conservative journalist Brian Matthews is a star on Real Time News Network. A loud, proud advocate for free speech and political incorrectness. He is a news-breaker, opinionmaker, and friend of CEOs and Prime Ministers, and then… Matthews is outed on social media as a sexual predator, and the RTN team is thrown into a dark night of ethical chaos.

Everyone knows social media is a sewer, full of trolls, bots, liars, right?... However, as new allegations emerge in real time, the truth begins to collide with alternative facts, and some unedifying Christmas party photocopies. The deadline clock is ticking. Will RTN choose to protect their star, or try to win the ratings?

Mueller is the Artistic Director and founder of Australian Writers Theatre and has written extensively for legacy and online media. He covers politics, arts and sports as a freelance for News Corp and Crikey.

His plays have been performed by Malthouse, Melbourne Theatre Company, Sydney Theatre Company, Griffin and Red Stitch Actors Theatre. In 2020, he won the Georgi Markov Award and the BBC International Audio Drama Prize. He has been a resident writer at New York New Dramatists in New York City and the Royal Court Theatre in London.

Newcastle Museum Unveils 'Model Newcastle' Exhibition

Newcastle Museum has unveiled its next major exhibition, and there's one notable difference to the items on display – their size. Model Newcastle: Big Stories, Little Things opened on 27 September into the intricate world of models and miniatures that pack maximum impact despite their diminutive scale.

The exhibition features items from the Museum's extensive collection alongside treasured creations on loan from the community, exploring how these tiny worlds serve big purposes – from exploring the past to imagining the future.

City of Newcastle Director of Museum, Archive, Libraries and Learning, Julie Baird, said the exhibition has been "a labour of love" showcasing craftsmanship from local and international designers, artists and makers. The exhibition explores five distinct themes:

• Views of the City features architectural models, including one of Australia's best model railways, Newcastle 1899, which depicts the Newcastle Railway Station precinct at the turn of the century. It also includes a model of the former Newcastle Workers' Club, used during the coronial inquest into the 1989 earthquake.

Modelling the Imagination explores creative entertainment pieces, including a 3D-printed mechanical fish tank by former Newcastle Herald cartoonist Peter Lewis and the fantastical puppetry collection of marionette performer Murray Raine.

• Scale Engineering showcases expert replicas from the Lake Macquarie Live Steamers Association, one of Australia's longestrunning model societies, active for more than 70 years.

• On the Water taps into Newcastle's marine history with model ships, boats and ferries, including a scale model of the famous Cutty Sark sailing ship. This model was painstakingly built over 40 years by Peter Sharp, whose fascination with Newcastle Harbour history was sparked during his career with Newcastle Water Police.

• Big Skills Miniaturised examines Newcastle's manufacturing legacy through apprentice pieces and demonstrator models used for competency assessments and skill demonstration.

The exhibition offers hands-on family fun with dollhouses inspired by civic landmarks, a miniature railway track, and film-making experiences using a post-apocalyptic model city.

Lord Mayor Dr Ross Kerridge praised the exhibition's multigenerational appeal, noting how models have been used for generations to "entertain, educate, investigate and explain."

Running until February 2026, tickets cost $10 for adults, $8 for concessions, and $5 for children (ages 5-16). Family passes are available for $25. For more information, visit www.newcastlemuseum.com.au.

ONE KILOMETRE, ENDLESS FINDS. Morpeth's Inaugural Treasure Trail Unveiled

There’s something undeniably magical about Morpeth. Nestled in the heart of the Hunter Valley, this historic riverside town has long been known for its heritage charm, boutique appeal, and warm country hospitality. But come 8 and 9 November, Morpeth will offer something even more compelling—a chance to uncover real treasure.

The inaugural Morpeth Village Treasure Trail promises to be far more than a vintage market. It’s an immersive, slow-travel experience that invites locals and out-of-towners alike to walk the town’s storied streets with fresh eyes. Coinciding with the national Garage Sale Trail Event—Australia’s grassroots celebration of reuse and community —the Morpeth event captures the best of both worlds: sustainability with style.

This isn’t your typical flea market setup. Instead of rows of anonymous stalls, the Treasure Trail stretches over one kilometre, linking a series of antique dealers in halls and churches along High St, Morpeth. Each stop along the trail is a curated collection of vintage finds, quirky collectables, and one-off antiques. The journey itself is as much a drawcard as the destination.

For collectors, this event is a dream come true. Whether you’re hunting for a Deco-era dressing table, mid-century ceramics, or the perfect addition to your coin or stamp archive, chances are you’ll find it here. In a rare offering, expert dealers will be providing free on-site coin & stamp valuations. Bring them down, you never know what you may uncover!

Beyond the thrill of the hunt, what makes the Morpeth Village Treasure Trail truly special is its underlying ethos. This is vintage with a conscience. By buying pre-loved items, we’re not only choosing charm and character over fast fashion and flat-pack—we're embracing a circular economy and reducing waste, all while supporting small, local businesses.

And of course, Morpeth itself is half the joy. With its riverside walks, artisan boutiques, and beloved cafes, the town makes an ideal daytrip or weekend getaway. Add in this one-of-akind event, and you've got the perfect excuse to linger a little longer.

So, mark the date, dust off your walking shoes, and come ready to explore. The past is waiting—and it just might be hiding in plain sight.

Spring marks an ideal time to explore Hungerford Hill's award-winning portfolio, particularly their crisp Semillons and vibrant Fianos. Under the guidance of winemaker Bryan Currie, Hungerford Hill continues to innovate while respecting tradition and terroir.

“Our Semillon grows in alluvial sandy loam on the southern bank of the Hunter River from the historic Dalwood vineyard, Australia's oldest continually operating vineyard, “says Bryan.

“These wines offer the perfect balance of freshness and complexity that complements spring's lighter fare and outdoor dining preferences.”

The winery's commitment to showcasing terroir from multiple regions becomes particularly relevant in spring, as guests can compare the bright citrus characteristics of Hunter Valley wines with the more structured expressions from Hilltops and Tumbarumba. You can expect bright and fresh aromas of citrus fruits, such as lemon, lime, and sometimes green apple – qualities that make these wines ideal companions for spring gatherings.

The Personal Touch Transforming Hunter Valley Holidays

WORDS LIANE MORRIS | FEATURES WRITER IMAGES SOURCE HUNTER HOLIDAYS

Georgia Smith has always believed that managing a holiday home is about more than keys, calendars and clean sheets — it’s about people. It’s about trust, relationships, and the little things that turn a short-term stay into a lasting memory. As the founder of Hunter Holidays, the Hunter Valley’s newest boutique property management service, managing premium holiday

homes in the Greater Hunter with a curated collection of luxury stays, family-friendly houses and group accommodation options, Georgia is drawing on over 14 years of industry experience to do things differently — offering a high-tech, high-touch alternative for both property owners and guests.

Based in the heart of wine country and built on a foundation of personalised service, innovation, and deep local knowledge, Hunter Holidays is a fresh take on short-term rental

management. And while the business is new, Georgia’s name is already well-known to many in the industry — a nod to the significant role she played in growing her family’s former business, Weekenda, into one of the region’s largest and most trusted holiday accommodation providers. Hunter Holidays offers owners a chance to maximise investment returns through dynamic pricing, next-gen booking tools, and stress-free management. For guests, it’s a seamless, curated holiday experience with personal touches and

premium support. This support includes a local team that is available before, during, and after guest stays, ready to help with anything from tailored recommendations to real-time support. They utilise the latest technology to make the booking process seamless and secure, while the on-the-ground local presence ensures every detail is taken care of to ensure the perfect getaway.

Weekenda was founded by Georgia’s father, Pete Smith, and grew from a single holiday home in Kangaroo Valley to a thriving business managing over 260 properties across the Hunter Valley, Central Coast, Lake Macquarie, and Newcastle.

“Weekenda began almost by accident,” said Georgia.

“Our neighbours noticed that it was booked much more often than theirs, so they asked him to start managing their properties. It developed into a genuine, in-demand business that sold to Alloggio in late 2023.”

“I wanted to create something here that felt authentic, personal, and future-focused.”

term rental conferences, bringing home insights and innovations that would help professionalise the Australian market.

Georgia began her own journey working in reservations and property management while studying at university, eventually moving into trust accounting and revenue management. She visited the U.S. annually to attend short-

Her contributions helped Weekenda lead the way in adopting cutting-edge systems, such as keyless entry, guest compendiums, dynamic pricing tools, and integrated property management software. She helped transform Weekenda into a professionally run, tech-driven business long before most others had caught on.

“I fell in love with the work,” Georgia reflects.

“It’s a people business. It’s about building relationships — with owners, with guests, and with the local tourism ecosystem. Holiday homes are so much more personal than hotels or longterm rentals. You’re managing someone’s home and someone else’s holiday all at once. That means doing it with care, heart, and detail.”

When her father sold Weekenda to Alloggio, Georgia continued working with the company. But by 2025, she was ready to step out on her own — and bring her own vision to life.

With the launch of Hunter Holidays, Georgia is doing things differently. Her new venture is

“I moved to the Hunter Valley ten years ago,” Georgia says. “I’ve got three young kids now and I just love the lifestyle — the space, the community, the landscape. Even though I grew up in Sydney, my grandparents lived on a property on the north coast, and I loved it there. I always knew that I was a country girl at heart. This is home now. I wanted to create something here that felt authentic, personal, and futurefocused. Something that delivers real results for owners and unforgettable experiences for guests in the heart of this wonderful community.”

That focus has already struck a chord. Hunter Holidays has quickly earned the trust of local property owners who value Georgia’s transparency, innovation, and track record. The business services the greater Hunter region, including Lake Macquarie, but remains firmly anchored in the Hunter Valley.

“Since launching, I have been overwhelmed by the level of support we’ve received from the local Hunter Valley community. This is a place where amazing things are happening, and where I feel I can genuinely give back. I’m very excited about the future.”

One of the most compelling aspects of Hunter Holidays is that it’s not an Online Travel Agent (OTA), unlike Airbnb, Stayz, or Booking. com. Georgia and her team don’t just manage listings — they take care of the entire operation. From cleaning and maintenance to pest control and guest communication, Hunter Holidays

offers a comprehensive, full-service experience –which is good news for both owners and guests.

What really sets them apart is the use of advanced data systems and AI-powered tools. Unlike traditional agencies that set static rates annually, Georgia’s team utilises dynamic pricing — adjusting nightly rates in real-time based on market demand, occupancy trends, and booking windows.

“We’re tracking data constantly,” she explains. “We see when demand is peaking, and adjust rates accordingly. Our pricing fluctuates about 30% over the course of the year. It’s a really flexible, responsive system — and it means better returns for our owners and very often great value for money for our guests with tailored packages and length of stay strategies utilised.”

It’s not just about revenue, though. Georgia’s approach to compliance, insurance, and risk mitigation protects the owner’s investment — something particularly important in an industry facing increased regulation and scrutiny.

“We’re not an OTA,” she says. “Those are just online booking channels. We’re managers — we’re responsible for the property, the guest experience, and the owner’s peace of mind.”

This hands-on management style means Georgia and her team know every property inside out — from its quirks to its best features.

“I don’t believe in cookie-cutter hospitality,” she explains. “Each property has a story and a personality, and our job is to amplify that through

great photography, compelling listings, and exceptional guest care.”

While Hunter Holidays treats every property as if it were its own, providing the best possible service to owners, the guest experience is just as important. Every booking comes with personal Credit: Justin Aveling Photography

support, concierge-style services and state of the art online compendiums that elevate a stay from simple to spectacular.

“Understanding the why behind a guest’s visit is important,” Georgia says. “Are they here for a family gathering? A wedding? A romantic escape? We build bespoke hospitality experiences around that. Guests can book addon packages, including grocery delivery, private wine tastings, picnics, helicopter rides, and inhome catering services. Our team will organise it all – it’s a curated, boutique offering for modern travellers.”

And it’s resonating. Trends in the short-term rental market show that travellers are seeking more than just accommodation — they want value, authenticity, and flexibility. Whether

it's grandparents booking a home for a multigenerational getaway or corporate groups opting for retreats over conferences, Georgia’s team is ready with tailored solutions.

The Hunter Valley’s short-term rental market offers investors and property owners an attractive way to generate income from regional properties, providing both lifestyle and financial returns. The industry is seeing a growing appetite for unique regional experiences, and the Hunter Valley region’s world-class wine and food culture has contributed to a surge in demand for quality holiday accommodation.

Georgia’s insight into the market is informed by over 14 years of experience — and she’s quick to point out that staying ahead of trends is essential.

“We’re already seeing more use of AI in bookings and guest communications. We’re seeing changes in guest expectations, booking behaviours, and even who is travelling. You’ve got to be agile and future-proof from day one.”

She also notes a shift in how people value their time and experiences post-COVID.

“There’s a real premium now on meaningful travel,” Georgia says. “People are more conscious of where they go, how they spend their time, and who they’re with. That’s why the little things matter more than ever — the welcome note, the personalised recommendations, the ease of check-in. It all adds up.”

Despite rapid growth and overwhelming support since launch, Georgia is clear about the future: measured, intentional growth that doesn’t compromise on quality.

“I don’t want this to become a giant,” she says. “I want it to stay high-touch, boutique, and personal. Every property we manage, we treat as if it were our own. Every guest we host, we support like family.”

As Hunter Holidays continues to grow its portfolio and reputation, it’s becoming clear that Georgia Smith has created something truly special — a business born of deep expertise, local passion, and modern innovation. For property owners looking to maximise their investment and guests looking for a richer, more personal Hunter Valley experience, the message is simple: You’re in expert hands with Hunter Holidays.

IMAGES SOURCE BONVILLA ESTATE

Perched on a ridge in Pokolbin with sweeping views of vines and the Brokenback mountain range, Bonvilla Estate is a destination where wine, beauty and hospitality meet in perfect harmony. This once-quiet vineyard has undergone one of the Hunter Valley’s most remarkable transformations, re-emerging as a vibrant cellar door, event space and luxury retreat that celebrates the very best of the region.

For Operations Manager Jo Minett, who joined the Bonvilla team after 17 years running Newcastle’s beloved Rocksalt restaurant, the magic lies in both the setting and the people.

“Our philosophy is about time well spent,” Jo says.

“We want people to feel welcome to wander, to linger, and to connect — whether that’s over a picnic, a tasting, or simply enjoying the beauty of the vines.”

Bonvilla Estate’s story begins with owner Allan McKeown, a Newcastle businessman with a background in sport, having served as the former deputy chairman of the Newcastle Knights. After a trip to France ignited his passion for wine, Allan spotted the Oakey Creek Road property - formerly known as Eagle’s Rest - and saw both its history and potential.

Eagle’s Rest was already respected for producing some of the best fruit in the Hunter Valley. Its Semillon and Shiraz vines, planted in

1998, had long been sought after by leading winemakers. But Allan envisioned something greater: not just reviving the vineyard but building a legacy.

He purchased the property in 2019, immediately closed the doors, and poured close to a million dollars into renovations. By 2021, Bonvilla Estate was unveiled - a name chosen to reflect both “bonne villa” (good home) and the family’s long-term vision.

“Allan has invested heavily in the vines and the property,” Jo explains.

“It wasn’t about a quick turnaround - it was about bringing the vineyard back to its former glory, modernising it, and creating something truly special for generations to come.”

The transformation of Bonvilla is nothing short of breathtaking. The once-modest cellar door and villa were redesigned by Webber Architects into spaces that balance sophistication with warmth.

Massive barn doors open onto panoramic vineyard views, while a grand stone fireplace anchors the cellar door with rustic charm. Stylish interiors echo the natural beauty outside, blending timber, glass and stone into an atmosphere that feels both luxurious and unpretentious.

“It’s like being welcomed into someone’s home,” Jo says. “We treat every guest as an individualwhether they’re a seasoned wine collector or just starting their journey.”

And it’s not just the buildings that have been renewed. Allan and his team invested in cover crops and soil health, ensuring the vines remain some of the best in the region. Today, Bonvilla’s 100-acre property (40 acres under vine) is once again producing fruit that reflects the true character of the Hunter Valley.

soils. The Semillon is crisp, expressive and age-worthy, while the Shiraz - grown on heavier clay loam soilsoffers blue-fruit flavours and elegant structure. Chardonnay, Sparkling Rosé, Sparkling Chardonnay, and a lighter Nouveau Shiraz expand the range, alongside a Sweet Semillon and an exciting, fortified Verdelho in development.

that invite you to sit down, share a glass, and enjoy the moment.”

While wine is central to Bonvilla, the experiences here go well beyond a tasting. Unlike many vineyards that keep visitors at arm’s length, Bonvilla actively encourages guests to explore the grounds.

Guests are welcome to wander through the

greets everyone,” Jo laughs. “And when our saxophonist Craig plays ‘Happy Birthday,’ Harvey howls along. He’s basically our customer engagement manager!”

Food is equally relaxed and thoughtful. Alongside tastings, Bonvilla offers charcuterie boards, cheese platters, and, over the summer, panini, cannoli, and coffee. Guests can also pre-order picnic hampers or even bring their own to enjoy among the vines. Bonvilla’s cellar door tastings are designed to suit every level of curiosity, from first-time visitors to seasoned wine lovers. The Estate Tasting, at just $15 per person, offers six wines that introduce guests to the core range and Bonvilla’s approachable style. The Experience Tasting, which expands to eight wines, is paired with warm bread, olive oil, and their signature charcoal sea salt for $20 per person. For those seeking a deeper dive, the Educated Tasting is an immersive session complete with a cheese board, tasting booklet and even a certificate to take home for $55pp. More adventurous guests can book a Wine & Wander, exploring the vines with a picnic basket, cheese and crackers, and a treasure map to guide the way for $45pp. Every tasting is an invitation to slow down, savour, and enjoy wine the Bonvilla way.

“We’re about hospitality in the truest sense,” Jo explains. “It’s not just about pouring a glass of wine - it’s about making people feel part of the place.”

Bonvilla’s calendar is filled with events that bring wine and community together.

The most anticipated is Les Vendange, held each February - a traditional-style grape harvest celebration where guests pick and stomp grapes, enjoy live music, and take home a limited-edition wine made from their efforts.

“Everyone gets a white t-shirt, a bucket, and secateurs,” Jo says. “By the end of the day, they’re stained purple, grinning ear to ear, and they’ve made a memory they’ll never forget.”

Other highlights include Fashion in the Vines on September 28. Enjoy a fashion parade featuring curated looks from a selection of local boutiques, accompanied by a glass of Bonvilla Estate wine upon arrival.

$5 from every ticket sold will support the event’s charity partner, Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation. If you’re stuck in Newcastle, why not head to the pop-up cellar doors at the Cooks Hill Surf Club on the last Sunday of every month? And on November 16, from 11am to 3pm, members and their guests

can enjoy a Garden Party Luncheon with catering by Twine – live music, and new wines as the estate showcases the gorgeous new event space, The Grove - an indoor-outdoor venue for weddings, corporate gatherings and private tastings.

Bonvilla also recently announced a partnership with the Newcastle Jets, becoming the club’s official wine partner. The collaboration sees Bonvilla wines featured in premium

For those who don’t want the day to end, Bonvilla offers luxury on-site accommodation. The beautifully renovated five-bedroom villa, which accommodates up to 12 guests, is situated adjacent to the cellar door and offers expansive views of the vineyard.

Plans are underway to expand this offering, with four additional villas scheduled for completion by the end of the year (and eventual approval for 20). Each villa will be designed to capture the elevated views and sense of tranquillity that defines Bonvilla.

“We want people to truly immerse themselves here,” Jo says. “Wake up to the vines, sip coffee on the veranda, and let the pace of the Hunter Valley slow you down.”

Despite only opening in 2021, Bonvilla Estate has quickly earned a reputation for excellence. With numerous cellar doors in the Hunter Valley, what sets Bonvilla apart? For Jo, it’s a combination of authenticity, beauty, and heart.

“We’re true to the Hunter Valley,” she says. “Single-vineyard wines, experiences that are hands-on and memorable, and a property that is absolutely stunning. But more than that, we want people to feel welcome. Whether you’re here for a tasting, a picnic, a wedding, or a weekend away, you’re part of the Bonvilla story.”

From its rebirth as Bonvilla Estate to its awardwinning wines and unforgettable events, this family-owned vineyard embodies the spirit of the Hunter Valley - relaxed, authentic, and full of heart.

For locals, it’s a reminder of the treasures in their own backyard. For visitors, it’s a must-stop destination where wine, nature and hospitality come together in perfect measure.

Bonvilla’s message is simple but powerful: take the time, slow down, and savour life’s moments.

Latitude 32 Wines:

A Spring Renaissance in the Hunter Valley

IMAGES CREDIT ELFES IMAGES

Spring in the Hunter Valley has always been magical, but at Latitude 32 Wines on Hermitage Road, this season brings something extraordinary – the perfect convergence of a winery hitting its stride and nature's annual renaissance. As the vines begin their new growth cycle and the landscape transforms into a verdant tapestry, visitors are discovering why this boutique winery has quickly become one of the region's most exciting destinations.

Just over a year since opening their doors, Emma and David White's vision for Latitude 32 is blooming alongside their vineyards. The former UK corporate executives, who describe themselves as reformed "wine chasers," have created something uniquely compelling in the Hunter Valley landscape. Their philosophy of "fun with serious intent" resonates particularly well in spring, when the energy of new growth matches their innovative approach to winemaking and hospitality.

The winery's recent addition of head winemaker Adam Holmberg marks another chapter in this spring awakening story. Holmberg, who brings experience from renowned Hunter Valley establishments Tyrell's and Leogate, joined the team with Emma's mandate to experiment and push boundaries while maintaining the fruit-first philosophy that defines Latitude 32's approach.

"Emma has given me free rein," Adam explains, "and I'm excited to push the boundaries of tradition without losing the quality."

This spring represents Adam’s first full season at the helm, bringing fresh techniques and perspectives to complement the winery's established ethos.

Perhaps nowhere is the spring renewal more evident than in Latitude 32's commitment to regenerative farming practices. As the season unfolds, visitors can witness firsthand the winery's innovative approach to vineyard sustainability. Between the vine rows, a diverse cover crop of canola, legumes, and rhubarb creates a living carpet that not only looks stunning but serves multiple ecological purposes.

"It becomes an ecosystem that looks after itself," Emma explains. Native bees, introduced as part of their sustainability program, busy themselves pollinating these cover crops, which will eventually be mowed back into the soil as natural fertiliser. This regenerative approach, which replaces synthetic chemicals with nature's own systems, creates a vineyard that thrives in harmony with its environment.

The reduction in tractor and diesel use, along with the introduction of beneficial insects like ladybugs for natural pest management, demonstrates how modern viticulture can work with nature rather than against it. For visitors

this spring, the vineyard serves as a living laboratory of sustainable practices that directly contribute to the quality of the wines in the glass.

The cellar door experience at Latitude 32 captures the essence of spring perfectly. The space, with its emphasis on comfort and connection to the landscape, features floor-toceiling windows that frame spectacular views of the vineyards and Brokenback Mountains. Multiple seating arrangements, ranging from the cozy interior spaces to the expansive verandah and lawn areas, cater to every mood and preference.

Spring visitors particularly appreciate the freedom to purchase wine by the glass and wander the property, creating their own adventure among the vines, around the dam, or simply lounging on the lawn with the giant Connect Four or Jenga sets. The dog-friendly environment and fire pit (perfect for cooler spring evenings) add to the welcoming atmosphere.

The innovative dumpling and wine pairing experience offers something unique in the region – various flavour combinations from pork and prawn to Szechuan beef and vegetarian options that complement the wine range beautifully. Morning visitors can book breakfast hampers from 9am, perfect for greeting the spring sunrise among the vines.

The wine portfolio at Latitude 32 reflects a balance of respect for Hunter Valley traditions and enthusiasm for innovation. Their classic lineup includes traditional Hunter Semillon, two distinct Chardonnay styles, Semillon-Chardonnay blends, Shiraz, and a Méthode Traditionelle sparkling wine. The Rosé, crafted from Shiraz, offers perfect spring sipping.

But it's The Enigma that genuinely captures the winery's innovative spirit. This white wine made from black grapes – specifically 45-yearold Pinot Noir vines – represents seven years

of research and experimentation inspired by the Whites' travels to Alsace. The complex process of creating a truly white wine from dark grapes while maintaining authentic Pinot Noir characteristics showcases the technical expertise and creative vision driving Latitude 32.

As spring progresses into summer, Latitude 32 continues evolving. Plans for planting Spanish Mencia and Italian Aglianico

varieties demonstrate their commitment to climate-adaptive viticulture and adventurous winemaking. International expansion into European markets builds on their success in China, while monthly Friday Night Jam Sessions and vineyard walks with the winemaking team strengthen community connections.

This spring, Latitude 32 represents more than just another Hunter Valley cellar door – it's a glimpse into the future of Australian winemaking, where tradition and innovation come together in perfect harmony.

From Parilla to Paddock: Estancia Finds Its Place in Lovedale

WORDS LIANE MORRIS

IMAGES MEGANN EVANS PHOTOGRAPHY

When Chef James Orlowski moved Estancia to its new home at Adina Vineyard & Olive Grove

earlier this year, he wasn’t just relocating a restaurant — he was planting roots.

Having already cultivated a loyal following for Estancia’s bold Latin American and Mediterranean-inspired menu, the move to

Lovedale marks a new chapter — one with more space, more potential, and more connection to the community and landscape that surrounds it.

“We’re not chasing fine dining,” says James. “We’re offering great food that’s approachable

— something between the pub and the white tablecloth. It’s casual but considered. You can settle in, let the kids run around, and enjoy yourself without feeling rushed.”

Now open five days a week for brunch, lunch, and early dinners — with special themed evenings Thursday to Saturday — Estancia is filling a unique niche in the Hunter Valley. For locals and visitors alike, it offers a welcome landing spot after a day of tastings, a relaxed venue for a family meal, or a long, flavour-packed lunch with friends.

Set among Adina’s 55 hectares of vines and olive groves, the restaurant is currently operating from a shared space in the estate’s original cellar door, which has been extensively refurbished. By mid-September, Estancia will be a dedicated dining space with an extended deck, a beautiful private dining room, and a layout better suited to James’ vision of relaxed, highquality hospitality.

In parallel, Adina is also preparing to launch The GT Room —a new addition to the estate. This private, purpose-built space is designed to celebrate the elegance of classic motoring while showcasing the best of the Hunter. It brings together estate-grown wines, Mediterranean-inspired dining, and relaxed luxury accommodation in a setting that’s refined yet warmly welcoming.

The GT Room has been designed as a destination for drive-day stopovers, collector

gatherings, corporate retreats, and weekend escapes. A place where guests can enjoy good food, great wine, and exceptional cars in a beautifully curated space surrounded by vines and olive groves. Estancia will be the caterer for functions and events held in the space.

In the meantime, guests can still enjoy alfresco dining on the deck, the expansive views, and snack on some charred vegetables and a plate of smoky grilled meats fresh off the parilla.

True to its roots, the menu is still anchored by fire, flavour, and generosity. Expect dishes like ceviche with bright citrusy zing, handmade pasta tossed in slow-cooked ragù, and Estancia’s signature Sunday parilla — a Latin-style mixed grill cooked over open flames.

There’s now a stronger lean towards modern Australian cuisine, too, with plenty of vegetarian options and lighter snacks designed to suit the pace and palate of Hunter Valley afternoons.

“We’ve added things like steak frites night and pasta banquets to bring in different crowds,” says James. “Some families come straight after school, others roll in after a day at the wineries. We’re giving people reasons to come back — and to stay a while.”

The family-run ethos is very much in evidence here. James’ wife, sons, and daughter all lend a hand, whether in the kitchen or front of house. His culinary inspiration is deeply personal as well. A decade living and working in Peru shaped his palate and passion, with some of the dishes — particularly the desserts — coming courtesy of his Italian-Peruvian mother-in-law, a pastry chef whose recipes are now house favourites.

“It’s always been about cooking with soul,” he says.

“We use fire, smoke, seasonal produce, and a lot of love.”

the local business community has been a major bonus.

“Lovedale feels like the gateway to the Hunter Valley,” he says.

“It’s accessible — for visitors and locals — and Adina itself is like a little hub. You’ve got the villas, the day spa, the cellar door, the olive tastings… it’s a great place to spend the whole day.”

For Adina, the partnership is part of a larger evolution. After the long and successful run of Emerson’s Restaurant, attracting a new, dynamic venue was a key goal of the estate’s broader refurbishment strategy.

“We were thrilled when James reached out,” says Adina’s Marketing Manager, Paul Sutcliffe. “His food and vision were a perfect fit. Estancia complements everything we’re working towards here — relaxed luxury, seasonal produce, and a strong sense of place.”

But for James and the Estancia team, the focus remains simple: good food, good wine, and good company.

“This is just the beginning,” he says. “We’re building something real — something grounded. Whether it’s wine on the deck, a steak straight off the fire, or a long lunch with friends, we want people to feel at home.”

Relaxed Hunter Valley Dining at its Best

In the heart of Lovedale on the stunning grounds of Gartelmann Wines, The Deck Cafe has become one of the Hunter Valley's most beloved dining destinations. Located on the deck overlooking the dam in young forest bushland, this family-owned establishment offers an unforgettable experience that perfectly captures the essence of Hunter Valley hospitality.

Experienced Chef, Matt Dillow, opened the Café in July 2013 as his third hospitality venture in the Hunter Valley. Under his expert guidance, The Deck Cafe has evolved into a sophisticated dining destination that combines cafe favourites with a Hunter Valley fine-dining twist. Matt's passion extends far beyond the cafe itself – he also runs cooking classes, food tours to destinations like Tasmania, Italy, and Spain, and creates his own gourmet product line, Matt's Produce

The Deck Cafe is open seven days a week for breakfast and lunch, serving delicious breakfasts from 8:30am weekdays and 8:00am weekends until 11:30am, followed by their renowned tapas-style lunch menu from 12pm to 2:30pm. The Tapas menu, available for lunch and dinner, is ideal for sitting back and relaxing with friends as you take in the incredible view, featuring dishes like Duck Liver Parfait, Blue Swimmer Crab with avocado timbal, and Lamb Backstrap filled with feta.

What sets The Deck Cafe apart is its commitment to quality and sustainability. They serve first-class food in a vibrant environment and make most of their ingredients on-site using locally sourced produce. The menu is seasonal, so it changes frequently to capture the freshest produce, ensuring every visit offers something new and exciting.

The cafe's location on the Gartelmann Wines estate creates a perfect synergy between food and wine. Matt purchased Gartelmann Wines in 2020 from founders Jan and Jorg Gartelmann, who established the cellar door and boutique winery in 1996. This partnership allows guests to enjoy dishes perfectly paired with Gartelmann Wines, which is conveniently located next door, creating an integrated food and wine experience.

The estate is an exercise in 'how to be successful', offering cooking classes, food tours, and special events throughout the year. Matt's animals, chickens, pigs, goats, sheep, geese, ducks and especially his two beautiful Alpacas, bring so much joy to a family day out. The property has become a favourite for family gatherings and local events, embodying Matt's philosophy that "You come as friends but leave as family".

The Deck Cafe Lovedale represents everything that makes the Hunter Valley special – exceptional food, award-winning wines, stunning natural surroundings, and genuine hospitality that makes every guest feel like part of the family.

The Hunter Valley comes alive this September with the D'Vine Wine and Food Festival, showcasing Pokolbin's culinary and viticultural excellence. Scheduled for 19-21 September, this weekend extravaganza offers onceyearly experiences that are unmissable for food and wine enthusiasts.

The festival transforms the historic Hermitage Road precinct into a vibrant hub featuring sweeping vineyard views, exceptional wines, live music, and authentic Hunter Valley hospitality. The street-long food festival showcases Pokolbin's finest offerings in an immersive experience extending beyond traditional wine tasting.

Friday evening launches with an exclusive Winemakers Dinner featuring canapé-style cuisine by Yellow Billy's award-winning chef Sam. Guests can mingle with respected regional winemakers while enjoying wine-matched courses and behind-the-scenes stories, hosted by Wine Selectors' Paul Diamond.

Beyond exceptional wine and food, D'Vine offers adventure activities including e-bike vineyard rides, Segway cruising, archery, and clay target shooting. Those preferring relaxation can enjoy Spicers' Luxe Breakfast, accompanied by mimosas, yoga sessions, and chair massages.

The festival features barrel tastings at Glandore Wines, intimate Vigneron Experiences at Latitude 32 Wines, and wine-paired BBQs at Hunter Wine Lab. Pop-up displays showcase luxury cars, local art, gourmet markets, and Italian festival vibes.

Recognising that great experiences are best shared, D'Vine welcomes families and pets to most events. Thoughtfully planned children's activities include outdoor games, crafts, and entertainment in spacious vineyard settings.

The festival offers comprehensive transport services with shuttle bus passes for just $35 covering the entire weekend. Around Hermitage accommodation guests receive included pick-up and drop-off services, plus shopping concierge assistance.

Free festival registration is essential due to capped venue numbers. Registration includes a festival kit and serves as your passport to discover amazing artisan producers and winemakers. The festival recommends staying at least two nights, with special accommodation packages available exclusively for D'Vine guests.

The D'Vine Wine and Food Festival perfectly combines the Hunter Valley's greatest assets: exceptional wine, outstanding food, and warm hospitality, all in one of Australia's most celebrated wine regions.

Hunter Valley Rosé: The Craft Behind the Colour

In the sun-drenched vineyards of Australia's oldest wine region, a pink revolution is quietly unfolding. The Hunter Valley, celebrated worldwide for its distinctive Semillon and robust Shiraz, has embraced the global rosé renaissance with characteristic Australian flair. What was once dismissed as a frivolous summer sipper has evolved into one of the wine world's most exciting and fastest-growing categories.

The rosé phenomenon represents a fascinating paradox: it is simultaneously one of the oldest and most modern wine styles. While today's Instagram-worthy bottles might suggest a recent trend, rosé's origins trace back to ancient Greece, where much of the red wine produced was actually pale red in colour. Hunter Valley winemakers have leveraged decades of expertise with red grape varieties to craft rosés that reflect both international trends and a distinctly Australian character.

The Hunter Valley Advantage

The Hunter Valley's unique terroir creates ideal conditions for producing elegant rosé wines with remarkable diversity, ranging from sweet and savoury to dry, light and creamy styles. The region's afternoon easterly sea breezes help mitigate blazing summer sunshine while mountains encircle three sides of the valley, creating a natural amphitheatre for viticulture. Australian rosés are predominantly produced from Shiraz and Grenache, with minimal skin contact to achieve their signature 'blush.' In the Hunter Valley, renowned Shiraz vineyards

– some boasting vines over 120 years old –provide fruit for rosés of exceptional depth and complexity. Beyond Shiraz, producers experiment with Merlot, Tempranillo, Nebbiolo, Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir.

The Craft Behind the Colour

Colour is essential to rosé's appeal, displaying a veritable rainbow of shades – from pale copper and pastel pink to magenta, apricot and orange. This diversity stems from the winemaking process, where red grape skins are removed earlier during fermentation than for red wine. The range depends on grape variety, phenolic compounds, and skin contact time. Contemporary winemakers employ cool fermentation to capture delicate aromatics while retaining varietal character.

The Perfect Partner

Rosé's greatest strength lies in its versatility for pairing with food. It displays the freshness of white wine combined with the structure of red wine, making it an excellent pairing with various dishes while managing spices and heat well. Rosé excels alongside salads, antipasto platters, fish dishes, and curry, while perfectly complementing soft goat cheese. The Hunter Valley's proximity to Newcastle and Sydney means these wines regularly grace tables featuring fresh seafood, Asian-inspired cuisine, and contemporary Australian fare.

Year-Round Appeal

While rosé is at its peak in warmer months, it can be enjoyed year-round. With over 150 wineries operating in the Hunter Valley, rosé has found its perfect stage. Cellar doors report strong rosé sales, particularly when visitors flock to the valley for wine tours and tastings.

The growth of the rosé category reflects broader changes in wine consumption. Experts credit rosé's surge to chic, European-style expressions from Provence in southern France. These elegant wines allowed rosé to shed its dull reputation, and Hunter Valley producers have successfully adapted this European inspiration to Australian conditions and palates.

Rosé typically features delicate flavours and balanced sweetness and acidity, making it refreshing and palate-cleansing, best served young and chilled. This philosophy aligns with the Hunter Valley's focus on wines that capture the essence of the vintage while remaining approachable and immediately enjoyable.

The Hunter Valley's embrace of rosé represents more than following trends – it demonstrates the region's ability to honour winemaking heritage while adapting to evolving preferences. From ancient traditions to contemporary expression, rosé tells a story of tradition meeting innovation, old vines yielding new styles, and a region that continues to surprise wine lovers worldwide.

Whether exploring valley cellar doors on sunsoaked afternoons or seeking the perfect wine for seafood feasts, Hunter Valley rosé offers a pinkhued passport to wine's most joyful expressions.
