Lakes Ontario, Erie and Huron – part of the largest freshwater system in the world – shape Ontario’s wine regions and moderate the extremes of our continental climate. They create the perfect cool climate conditions, giving our wines elegance, structure, food friendliness and good aging potential.

Limestone: 500 Million Years in the Making
If there were to be a “most famous” soil type for producing fine wine, it would probably be limestone. Ontario’s soils in the Great Lakes basin vary from sand to clay to rock, with a high concentration of limestone from an ancient seabed that was exposed to more than one million years of glacial activity. Ontario is one of the few wine regions in the world that is founded on limestone, similar to Burgundy and Champagne.
These limestone nutrients and minerality produce a special lift and elegance in our wine.

Our Appellations at a Glance
Ontario’s wine country is situated in the heart of the world’s fine-wine zone. Located between 41° and 44° North and stretching across 18,000 acres (7,284 hectares), our vineyards are made up of complex limestone-based soils created by glaciers thousands of years ago. Ontario’s appellations, geographically defined wine areas, benefit directly from their proximity to three of the five Great Lakes of North America, the largest freshwater system in the world. This unique combination of latitude, lakes and limestone is the foundation on which Ontario is making globally acclaimed wines.
Niagara Peninsula
Ontario’s oldest wine appellation draws its cool climate character from winds o the Niagara Escarpment and Lake Ontario. Complex glacial soils carved from the Ice Age are the backbone of exciting wines from a wide range of grapes. This appellation encompasses 10 sub-appellations and three regional appellations. (See maps at right.)
Lake Erie North Shore
Ontario’s southernmost appellation benefits from warm temperatures and a long growing season. The warm, shallow waters of Lake Erie a ord excellent ripening conditions for full-bodied wine. This appellation encompasses Ontario’s newest sub-appellation, South Islands, which includes well-known Pelee Island.
Prince Edward County
Ontario’s coolest appellation is a virtual island on the northeastern end of Lake Ontario with more than 800 kilometres of shoreline, including renowned Sandbanks Provincial Park. Stony calcareous limestone soils and a short growing season produce concentrated fruit resulting in wines with bright acidity and distinct mineral character.

Ontario VQA wines are exceptional thanks to rigorous standards set by the Ontario Wine Appellation Authority (OWAA). Through audits, inspections and testing, the appellation system ensures quality, authenticity and a true expression of Ontario’s unique terroirs.
Decoding the Label
Wine labels may seem complex, but they o er valuable information about what’s inside the bottle. While the VQA logo might not always be present, look for the VQA letters surrounding the appellation to ensure your wine is VQA certified.

Ontario has identified primary grape-growing regions, or “appellations,” where the soil and climate create unique growing conditions. Terroir, meaning “sense of place,” is the term used to describe the sum of these factors –soil, climate and natural surroundings – that shape a wine’s character. Understanding an appellation helps you appreciate the distinct characteristics of its wines. All VQA wines must declare where the grapes are grown, whether it’s simply Ontario or a more specific region or sub-appellation.

It is always a more-sustainable choice for Ontarians to buy local Ontario VQA wines, but some wineries have taken their commitment to the next level by producing certified sustainable wines. These wineries and growers participate in a third-party audit to track things like water and energy e ciencies to help measure impact on their community and the environment. Producers of certified sustainable wines and the growers who cultivate their vineyards are caretakers of the land, committed community partners, climate action leaders and advocates for social equity and diversity. By practising environmentally responsible and sustainable approaches in both vineyards and wineries, they ensure that the communities they serve, the land they farm and their businesses remain healthy and viable for future generations.

Taste Responsibly
Wine is a beautiful thing, but alcohol should be consumed in moderation. When visiting wine country, be sure to choose a designated driver or hire a tour company. One of the best parts of visiting Ontario’s wine country is the “tasting experience.” Don’t feel pressure to swallow every drop; most wineries have spittoons available. All you have to do is ask. Be sure to visit any of the fabulous restaurants en route to prevent tasting on an empty stomach. Enjoy!
Travelling with Wine
If travelling by car, secure the wine in a cooler or box and out of direct sunlight or extreme temperatures. If travelling by plane, ensure the wine is well secured in strong shipping packaging to avoid breakage.
Travelling to the United States
When travelling from Canada, each adult 21+ is allowed to take one litre of wine to the US. Any additional wine is subject to applicable Customs duty and IRT.*
