COLD MORNINGS, WARM CARS
Understanding Colorado’s Unattended Vehicle Law On cold mornings, it can be tempting to start your car and let it warm up while you finish getting ready. In Colorado, however, leaving a vehicle running while it’s unattended is illegal under the state’s Unattended Vehicle Law — commonly called the “puffer law.” The law is designed to address two common issues: air quality and vehicle theft. Idling vehicles release unnecessary emissions, especially during winter inversions that can trap pollution close to the ground. Just as important, an unattended, running vehicle is an easy target for thieves. Even if you’re “only gone for a minute,” it only takes seconds for someone to drive off.
The Windsor Police Department encourages residents to plan ahead on cold days: scrape windows before starting your trip, park in a well-lit area, lock your doors, and keep valuables out of sight. A few small habits can help protect your property, reduce emissions and keep our community safer. Colorado's unattended motor vehicle (CRS 42-4-1206) can be found on the State of Colorado website at bit.ly/ COStatutes or by scanning the QR code at the bottom of the page.
There is a limited exception for vehicles with remote-start features. If you use remote start, you still need to ensure the vehicle cannot be moved — including keeping your keyless start fob away from the vehicle so it can’t be shifted into gear and driven. If the vehicle can be moved, it may still be considered unattended under the law.
