Thriving Together

A star is beautiful on its own, but it is only together that we form a constellation

Thriving Together

Welcome from Dawn Haywood CEO

Dawn Haywood welcomes you to the second edition of our Windsor Academy Trust Family magazine, Thriving Together.

As the days lengthen and we approach the Easter break, it is a pleasure to welcome you to the latest edition of Thriving Together Children achieve and thrive when our schools, our trust and families work together I want to thank you for your support and partnership in this collective endeavour.

The Spring term is often a season of growth and momentum, and that has certainly been the case across our family of 15 schools This term has provided some truly standout moments of celebration I am incredibly proud to share the recent success of Goldsmith Primary Academy, which received a glowing Ofsted report under the new inspection framework and is one of only a handful of schools in the country to receive ‘exceptional’ grades This outcome is a testament to the tireless dedication of our staff, the hard work of our students and the ongoing support of our families and the wider community.

We continue to expand our commitment to providing exceptional education with the development of our new free school, Windsor Apollo Academy in Walsall The Department for Education has approved the new mainstream inclusive secondary school, which will include a sixth form and a dedicated 24-place inclusion hub It is due to open in September 2027

At the start of this half term, the government launched its Schools White Paper. While national policy often evolves, I am heartened to see how closely the priorities laid out in the White Paper align with our own core mission

At Windsor Academy Trust, our moral purpose remains unchanged: to unlock both the academic and personal potential of every child Whether it is through the rigorous academic standards we set in the classroom or the enrichment experiences that build character and confidence, our inclusive strategy ensures we are always moving towards a brighter future for all

Beyond the headlines and policy papers, the heart of our family remains the daily focus on ensuring our children and young people belong, engage, learn, achieve and thrive From the sporting fields to the science labs, I continue to be inspired by the progress our students are making

None of this would be possible without you Your partnership - whether attending parents' evenings, supporting school events or encouraging your child’s curiosity, learning and engagement at home - is the fuel that allows our students to thrive.

Thank you for your continued support I hope this break offers you and your family a chance to rest, recharge and enjoy time together I look forward to welcoming everyone back for a final, flourishing summer term

Warm regards,

At Windsor Academy Trust, the very heart of our Co-creating Brighter Futures strategy is our unwavering shared moral purpose: to unlock the academic and personal potential of every single child.

Turbo Booster 1: Students is the powerful engine that directly propels us toward this guiding star This strategy is our commitment to going beyond academic outcomes, ensuring we create conditions where every student is known, challenged, supported, and inspired daily

This work is grounded in our core values of Excellence and Inclusivity Our shared approach to excellence, delivered through our School Transformation Model, ensures every student leaves Windsor Academy Trust not just wellqualified, but ready to lead a happy, successful, and fulfilling life The stories that follow powerfully illustrate how we deliver on this vital part of our strategy.

Goldsmith Primary Academy ‘Leads the Way’ with Triple ‘Exceptional’ Ratings in Ofsted Inspection

We are bursting with pride to share a landmark achievement for our family of schools Goldsmith Primary Academy has been recognised as one of only two primary schools in the country* to receive three ‘Exceptional’ grades under Ofsted’s rigorous new inspection framework

Brave Leadership

In November 2025, Goldsmith took the brave step of volunteering for the new Ofsted inspection system Moving away from single-word judgements, this new ‘School Report Card’ framework sets an incredibly high bar, offering a detailed and demanding assessment of school performance

Max Wakeman, headteacher, and his team stepped forward because they were confident in the exceptional education they provide every day - and they wanted to help shape the future of inspection for the whole sector.

Incredible Results

The outcome is a testament to the hard work, passion, and expertise of the entire staff team at Goldsmith The report confirms that the school is not just meeting expectations but exceeding them at the highest level

Inspection Highlights: The school achieved the highest possible grade of Exceptional in:

Inclusion

Leadership and Governance

Personal Development and Wellbeing

In addition, the school achieved the Strong Standard, indicating practice well above the expected benchmark, in Achievement, Attendance and Behaviour, Curriculum and Teaching, and Early Years Inspectors described the school as an "oasis of calm and kindness" where staff have an "unwavering determination to give every pupil the best possible start in life "

Celebrating Together

Max Wakeman, Headteacher, said: "We put ourselves forward for this voluntary inspection because we are incredibly proud of our school community. This report captures the heart of Goldsmith. It recognises that we don’t just teach children; we nurture them, we include them, and we empower them to become the very best versions of themselves "

Leanne Bridgwood, our Trust’s Director of Primary, added: "Goldsmith Primary Academy is a shining example of what is possible when high expectations are matched with deep care We are thrilled that the pilot inspection has validated the world-class work happening in these classrooms every day "

Dawn Haywood, CEO of Windsor Academy Trust, added: “This is a landmark moment not just for Goldsmith Primary Academy, but for the entire Windsor Academy Trust family To volunteer for such a rigorous new framework and achieve these results is a testament to the bravery, expertise and ‘pride in excellence’ that defines our approach.

“Achieving ‘Exceptional’ in Inclusion, Leadership, and Personal Development demonstrates that our strategy to unlock both academic and personal potential is working. We are delivering education for the greater public good, and Goldsmith is leading the way nationally ”

Please join us in congratulating the entire team at Goldsmith Primary Academy on this historic success

Miss Woolman and Miss Donnelly have successfully launched the Girls Active Club at Windsor High School and Sixth Form, in partnership with the Youth Sport Trust This initiative is all about breaking down barriers to physical activity and empowering girls to lead, influence and inspire their peers.

Meeting every Tuesday, the club has already made a huge impact on a dedicated group of Year 8 students, whose confidence and engagement in PE has soared The group has enjoyed enriching trips, including rock climbing and horse riding, which have pushed them out of their comfort zones

"When I first came here today I felt worried and nervous about falling, and upon leaving, I felt so much more confident "

To help the club grow, a new buddy system has been introduced, pairing Year 8 members with new Year 7 students A recent trip to Forge Mill Farm was the perfect opportunity to launch this, helping new friendships flourish.

The corridors across our schools were transformed into vibrant storybooks. Children and staff alike embraced the opportunity to dress up as their most cherished literary characters, sparking joyful conversations about favourite authors and new tales waiting to be discovered The infectious energy brought by everyone donning brilliant costumes served as a wonderful reminder that the joy of reading is something you never outgrow

These staff members act as the "eyes and ears" of the academy, leading school culture through positive narration and high expectations

Central to this success is the collaboration between staff and students. Our supervisors mentor an incredible team of pupil leaders, including:

Transforming Community Health in Newcastle-under-Lyme

We are thrilled to share an inspiring example of how Windsor Academy Trust is bringing our civic strategy to life. Our Co-creating Healthy Futures Framework has provided a blueprint for bringing health, education and community together to benefit young people and their families

Through the Newcastle-under-Lyme Children and Young People Coalition, our schools are demonstrating exactly what it means to act as "civic anchor institutions” - and becoming deeply rooted in their communities

The Challenge: Breaking the Cycle

Education and health are two sides of the same coin. We know that poor health management often leads to school absenteeism, which in turn results in lower engagement and poorer long-term life chances For too long, schools and health services have worked in parallel, seeing the same families but through different lenses.

A Pioneering Solution

Using our Co-Creating Healthy Futures framework as a practical guide, we have established a unique, multi-agency coalition This project is a trailblazing collaboration between our three Newcastle secondary schools, Clayton Hall Academy, Newcastle Academy, and Sir Thomas Boughey Academy, and key partners including the NHS, Local Authorities, Public Health, Newcastle Family Hub and Support Staffordshire, an organisation representing voluntary community groups

Targeted Action: Asthma Support in Schools

Evidence gathered across Newcastle highlighted a clear starting point for our collective action Data suggested that respiratory health is a significant barrier for many of our students; therefore, the Coalition has identified Asthma Support in Schools as our primary target By focusing on this specific clinical area, we can provide immediate, practical support that keeps children healthy and in the classroom

Turning Strategy into Action

The Coalition has secured £300,000 in funding over three years from the Staffordshire and Stoke-On-Trent Integrated Care Board (ICB) This investment is a direct result of using our Co-creating Healthy Futures Framework to influence cross-sector decision-making and build a "place-based" platform for change

The funding supports a dedicated Primary Care Network Programme Manager and a budget for co-designed projects that focus on:

Reducing school absenteeism specifically linked to ill health

Boosting health literacy to help schools, health and community partners to support students and families navigate public health messages more effectively.

Improving access to healthcare services through early intervention and prevention.

Co-creating Healthy Futures

By working together, we are not just addressing symptoms; we are tackling the root causes of inequality. This work is fundamental to our mission at Windsor Academy Trust to co-creating healthy futures and unlocking academic and personal potential

As we move forward, this project serves as a powerful blueprint for how our schools can foster healthier, more resilient communities where every child has the opportunity to thrive

Newcastle-Under-Lyme Children & Young People’s Coalition

Local Community Committee

Chairs meet for first Annual Chairs

Development Session

What is our Why? Recently, the Local Community Committee (LCC) Chairs from across Windsor Academy Trust (WAT) met at Great Wyrley Academy to answer that very question. Led by Karen Canham, Local Link Governance Director, the session was designed to thank our volunteers and explore a bold new vision for our schools; becoming community anchor institutions and using education as a force for greater public good.

Our CEO, Dawn Haywood, opened the morning by linking our local work to the national stage. With big changes coming from the government’s White Paper and SEND consultations, Windsor Academy Trust is positioning itself at the forefront of thinking and innovation for local governance.

The core idea was simple, but powerful: Schools do not exist in a vacuum. A student’s success is shaped by their health, their family, and the community they live in Dawn challenged the Chairs to think of themselves as the initiators of real community impact, identifying community needs early, ensuring each child can reach their full potential to thrive, not just in school but beyond the school gates

The Health-Education Connection: "Co-creating Healthy Futures"

One of the key focuses of the day was a presentation by Van Willerton Head of Community Development at Windsor Academy Trust on the link between public health and the classroom Representatives reflected on the "Cycle of Inequality" and how it affects our students

A striking example shared was that 60,000 school days were missed because of child dental issues in England last year and 1 in 5 children between 3 - 5 years old experience tooth decay, which is entirely preventable This is not just a medical issue; it is an education issue If a student is in pain or missing school for tooth extractions, they aren't learning Through the "Co-creating Healthy Futures" framework and initiatives like our "Brighter Smiles" supervised toothbrushing campaign, our Local Community Committees are looking at public health data to see how we can improve "life chances" for every child in our care

Community Mapping: Finding Our "Anchor Institutions"

The LCC Chairs shared conversations about finding out who our friends are in a process called Asset-Base Community development (ABCD). The goal is to use local knowledge to identify, document, and mobilise existing strengths, skills, resources, and passions within a community. Focusing attention on “what is strong” and not “what is wrong”, concentrates on what is already present to foster sustainable development, aiding the co-design of projects that are rooted in the community, helping our schools to thrive. These projects could include:

GP Surgeries: To better align health and education.

Sports Clubs and Gyms: To ensure students have high-quality enrichment outside of school hours.

Local Charities and Community Leaders: To build a "culture of vigilance" and support for our most vulnerable families

By mapping these out, our Local Community Committees can drive conversations that turn a school from just a building into a true community hub

Defining the "Why"

To wrap up the session, Chairs were asked to reflect on their personal mission. The "Why" behind their work included:

Advocacy: Being a voice of the community to ensure every child succeeds.

Inclusion: Making sure high standards apply to every child and that thought is given in planning for underserved communities

Collaboration: Deepening the connection between the Board of Directors, Local Community Committees to help integration of local services across multi agencies to to work towards system coherence

The session closed with deep reflections from Karen and Andy Middleton (Chair to the Board of Directors) on how our Local Community Committees can be the driving force of our Turbo-Booster 3; Society By strengthening the very fabric of the communities we serve through collaboration, we ensure that we are Cocreating Brighter Futures For All - as we strive to unlock the academic and personal potential of every child

Lacing Up for Change: WAT a Run 2026 Returns

As the spring mornings begin to brighten, a familiar sense of anticipation is building across the Windsor AcademyTrust family. On Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th May, students, staff, and our wider communities will once again lace up their running shoes for the highly anticipated return of our flagship event

Last year, the sheer energy and determination of our community saw us raise an incredible £30,000 This year, we are setting our sights even higher We have established a bold cumulative target of £70,000, with every single penny raised going directly towards our vital 'Bed & Breakfast' campaign. This profound initiative is dedicated to tackling bed poverty, ensuring that every child across our schools has the comfortable night's sleep and nutritious start to the day they need to unlock their academic and personal potential

This remarkable event perfectly embodies our commitment to Turbo Booster Three: Society, harnessing the power of civic action to empower our local communities to thrive. By running together, we are taking collective responsibility for the wellbeing of our young people

With the countdown officially on, we are preparing to make 2026 our most spectacular year yet Look out for more exciting updates and ways to get involved coming very soon This weekend is a joyous testament to what we can achieve when we unite as one family with one shared mission, and we cannot wait to celebrate with you all.

Turbo Booster Four Sustainability

At Windsor Academy Trust, we believe education has a vital role in shaping a better future, not just for our students, but for the planet they’ll inherit. Turbo Booster 4: Sustainability is our commitment to embedding environmental responsibility into everything we do. From reducing our carbon footprint to weaving climate education into our curriculum, we aim to empower every student to lead change in their communities

Our ambition is bold: to become one of the most sustainable school trusts in the country and achieve net carbon zero by 2030 We back this goal with clear strategy, practical action, and student-led initiatives

This objective directly supports the Resources Igniter within our Trust's strategy, ensuring long-term operational efficiency and stability

Ultimately, this is about delivering on our shared moral purpose By giving young people the knowledge, skills, and sense of responsibility, we prepare them to create a greener, fairer world for all

A National Spotlight: Goldsmith Primary Academy

Featured in DfE Strategy

We are incredibly proud to share that Goldsmith Primary Academy has been featured as a leading example of excellence in the Department for Education’s (DfE) newly released 10-year Education Estates Strategy The academy’s pioneering Sustainability Case Study is highlighted on page 30 of the national report, showcasing our commitment to creating "fit-for-the-future" learning environments

The strategy, titled A Decade of National Renewal, sets out a bold vision for a safe, sustainable, and inclusive education estate. Goldsmith’s inclusion serves as a "golden thread" for the WAT family, proving that our local actions, such as enhancing biodiversity and driving climate resilience, are setting the standard for schools across the country

Being recognised at this level is a testament to the hard work of our staff and students in "Unlocking Academic and Personal Potential" through environmental leadership. As the DfE moves toward a more sustainable and nature-focused "garden school" model, the WAT family continues to lead the way, ensuring our buildings are not just places of work, but anchors for a greener community

By taking these local steps, our students are helping a massive global cause We are so proud of how our children are working together to build a brighter, greener future for everyone!

Turbo Booster Five: System is a core part of our Co-creating Brighter Futures for All strategy It is all about sharing the expertise we have developed, reaching more students, and actively shaping a stronger future for the entire education system

At Windsor Academy Trust, we firmly believe that the most effective way to serve our students and our moral purpose is to grow thoughtfully, collaborate widely, and contribute meaningfully to the wider sector We do this by responsibly welcoming new schools into the Windsor Academy Trust family We also actively support vital local partnerships and take a leading role in national conversations across education Through these efforts, we are helping to unlock academic and personal potential in communities far beyond our own classrooms

We are truly proud to influence the wider system We are deeply committed to helping define what great education looks like not just for Windsor Academy Trust, but for the entire education community
