is a major producer of pharmaceuticals and an important market for MIA.
In 2024, Puerto Rico exported 5,471 metric tons of pharmaceuticals valued at $15.7 billion.
While Puerto Rico is its own U.S. Customs District and cargo between MIA and Puerto Rico is considered Domestic Commerce, MIA serves as a major distribution hub for pharmaceuticals originating in Puerto Rico, transiting through Miami, and destined for European and other world markets.
Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) is also a designated by IATA as a CEIV certified pharmaceutical handling hub.
In 2015, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) recognized MIA as the first IATA Designated Pharma Hub Airport in the U.S. MIA received this recognition for engaging the local cargo community in the IATA Center of Excellence for Independent Validators (CEIV) Pharma Certification Program; a program that prepares logistics companies to become experts at properly handling sensitive pharma products.
Ten members of the MIA cargo community have completed the CEIV Certification Program including six airline carriers, two ground handling companies, and two international freight forwarders.
