Keystone Consumer

Fenestration Report highlights

timber, smart technology and regional opportunities The latest UK Consumer Fenestration Trends Report has been released, providing fresh insight into homeowner preferences, priorities and purchasing behaviour across the UK windows, doors and roof glazing market. This edition places particular emphasis on a number of areas where a deeper understanding of consumers can create new opportunities for manufacturers and installers. Following the strong reception to the previous report’s analysis of aluminium-preferring consumers, this edition includes a detailed look at timber-preferring homeowners, revealing a distinct group that places more importance on quality, security, style and craftsmanship, along with higher project budgets across many areas of home improvement. The report also revisits smart

home technology, exploring updated attitudes towards the functionalities consumers value, barriers to wider adoption and potential market size. Security remains the strongest area of interest, while cost, reliability and complexity continue to limit takeup. A further feature is the regional preference analysis, highlighting significant local differences across materials, window and door styles,

colours, glazing and purchasing priorities. The findings provide installers with practical insight into what matters most to homeowners in their local markets, helping them tailor product recommendations and marketing messages to build greater trust and relevance, according to the company. Charlotte Hawkes, director at Keystone Market Research, said: “This latest report demonstrates that real opportunities lie in understanding the differences between consumer groups and local markets. The decision to look at timber-preferring homeowners follows the very positive response to our aluminium analysis, and we have again identified a group with clear characteristics that businesses can use to refine their approach. “The regional analysis is particularly valuable for installers. Understanding what matters locally allows them to demonstrate that they understand their customers, build trust and make their product and service proposition more relevant.

TRADE NEWS “With just 7% of homeowners saying salespeople addressed what mattered most to them very well during their last window purchase, yet 53% saying they would spend more with companies that demonstrated a clear understanding of their needs, there is clear room for improvement. Our Consumer Fenestration Trends Reports are designed to help the industry close that gap.” Alongside these special features, the report confirms continuing market trends, with quality, security and energy efficiency remaining the leading homeowner priorities. uPVC continues to dominate material preferences, while traditional casement windows, sliding patio doors and triple glazing retain strong consumer interest. The latest results also indicate greater confidence in home improvement investment, with more homeowners planning to increase their spending than reduce it during the remainder of the year, says the company. Report and Webinar The next Consumer Trends webinar takes place at 10am on 2 September, giving attendees the opportunity to explore the latest findings and take part in a Q&A focused on the issues that matter most to their businesses. Customers of our sponsors, Business Pilot, Endurance Doors, Epwin Window Systems, the Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF), Liniar and VEKA, can access both the report and webinar for free. LSF Commercial triples

capacity after year

of factory investment

Commercial aluminium systems specialist LSF Commercial has tripled its manufacturing capacity over the past 12 months, following a sustained programme of investment in its Rainham, Essex facility. The family-run business, which fabricates aluminium windows, doors, curtain walling and shopfronts for commercial projects nationwide, has extended its factory floor, introduced a new relay production system and installed a state-of-the-art powder coating oven within a purposebuilt extension. Director Onkar Toot said the changes reflect a long-term commitment to keeping pace with rising customer demand. “We’ve grown steadily for years, but the scale of change in the last 12 months has been something else. Tripling our output isn’t something that happens by accident. It’s the result of careful planning, a lot of hard work from the team and a genuine willingness to keep improving how we do things.” The introduction of a relay system has reorganised how

work moves through the factory, cutting processing times and removing bottlenecks between departments, says the company. “Every stage now flows into the next,” Onkar said. “There’s no downtime waiting for the next part of the job to start. That change alone has made a huge difference to turnaround.” The new powder coating oven, housed in an extension built specifically for the purpose, has added further capacity for finishing work in-house, according to the company. “Bringing more of the process under our own roof gives us far greater control over quality and lead times,” Onkar added. “It means when we make a promise to a customer we can keep it.” The capacity upshift will also help with LSF’s supply of fire rated windows and doors. As a certified supplier of fire rated aluminium systems, customers can access products designed to meet demanding fire specifications across commercial developments, says the company. lsfcommercial.co.uk WINDOW NEWS | SEPTEMBER 2026 5

Merchants expect

Click & Collect sales to grow

most branch managers (a net 62%) expected Click & Collect to increase as a share of sales. Many commented that they had recently introduced Click & Collect, and this – in combination with increasing online sales – provides substantial growth potential. Not everyone offers Same Day Delivery, but comments suggest that merchants are recognising that customer expectations are increasing in terms of delivery times. Next Day delivery is becoming the standard and a net 29% expected Same Day delivery to increase over the next year. However, 10% expected Same Day delivery to decrease as business picks up and the branch gets busier. Anna Eriksson of MRA Building Market Reports said: “Having run this survey over three consecutive quarters, we are seeing the number of branches offering Click & Collect increase each quarter. Some merchants are actively pursuing the online sales channel and setting ambitious growth targets.

A nationally representative survey of 300 branch managers, undertaken by MRA Reports, shows that 67% of general builders’ merchants in the UK expect Click & Collect sales to increase at their branch over the next 12 months. The survey forms a part of a quarterly update report on the UK builders’ merchants’ market, which provides a review of key market events, M&A activity and updated forecasts to 2030 based on new data as well as merchants’ responses to the survey. Merchants were asked what delivery and collection options they offered to customers. Next Day Delivery is now offered

by more than 90% of general builders’ merchant branches. Some merchants offer Next Day Delivery as their standard delivery option, while others have a standard delivery time of 3-5 days. Over three quarters of merchants now offer Click & Collect. Same Day Delivery was offered by a lower percentage of branches; however, delivery times are often highly dependent on how busy the branch is, rather than what the customer wants. If there is capacity, delivery may take place on the same day even where it is not defined as an offer. Asked how they thought the delivered-collected mix might change in the next 12 months,

6 WINDOW NEWS | SEPTEMBER 2026

“The fact that Same Day delivery availability depends on merchants’ workloads could be viewed as an issue. However, in reality, most merchants are highly customer oriented and will meet customers’ requirements wherever possible. Same Day delivery is often offered as an added extra, rather than a promise. There are higher expectations for weather dependent work and among DIY customers. “While the long-term trend is towards growth in Click & Collect and faster delivery options, we are currently seeing some opposing movements that we believe to be temporary. With both fuel and material prices at historically high levels, customers are often happy to wait longer if it means avoiding delivery surcharges.” www.mra-reports.co.uk

Glazerite agrees exclusive 5-year deal with Veka

The Glazerite UK Group has agreed an exclusive new 5-year deal with Veka, further strengthening the long-term partnership between the systems company and fabricator.

The move marks a significant milestone in a relationship spanning more than 20-years, during which both businesses have grown and evolved together from Glazerite’s early years as a start-up fabricator to its position today as one of the UK’s leading window and door manufacturers. The decision to move into a singlesource supply agreement comes as part of Glazerite’s ambitious plans for growth. This includes a major restructure of its operations, with the objective of delivering a more agile and flexible service, increased competitivity and further

quality enhancements.

It means that Glazerite will close its Deceuninck facility in Barnsley with immediate effect. Group manufacturing will be 100% Veka/ Halo at the remaining three sites in Wellingborough, Peterborough and Bolton. By consolidating its PVC-U systems supply with Veka, Glazerite will benefit from access to Veka’s complete product portfolio, ongoing investment in innovation and the strength of one of the most recognised brands in the industry, says the company. Rob Brearley, group managing director of Glazerite, said: “This decision is about positioning Glazerite for long-term growth. As our business continues to evolve, simplicity and focus become

increasingly important. We believe a single-source partnership with Veka gives us the strongest platform to support our customers and drive future growth.” “Veka gives us everything we need from a systems partner; a comprehensive product range, strong brand recognition, ongoing innovation and the capability to support both our trade customers and growing commercial ambitions .It made the decision a straightforward one – this feels right and we’re excited for what comes next. Neil Evans, managing director at Veka plc, added: “Glazerite has been a hugely important partner for Veka for many years and we’re delighted to be entering this next chapter together.” “Both businesses share a commitment to growth, innovation and supporting customers to succeed. By working closely together under a single-source framework, we’re creating a simpler, stronger and more focused platform for the future. We welcome the responsibility that the trust Glazerite places in us creates and will continue to demonstrate the value of the credentials we have”. www.glazeritewindows.co.uk

And the savings on raw material use are significant too, with the demand for virgin sand – the main raw material for glass manufacturing – cut by estimated 4,641 tonnes to date, according to the company. Ian Short, managing director of Morley Glass, said: “We’re really proud to have reached the 3,000 tonne milestone in our glass recycling scheme. It is so important that the industry continues to treat post-consumer IGUs as a raw material for remanufacturing, rather than something that can simply be disposed of and forgotten about.

Morley Glass smashes

through 3,000 tonne mark for recycled glass The latest recycling data from Morley Glass shows that the company has now generated more than 3,000 tonnes of cullet through the crushing of postconsumer IGUs it collects from its integral blind customers. Morley Glass’s scheme, which pioneered the recycling of postconsumer IGUs at scale when it first launched in 2021, allows installers to divert the IGUs extracted from windows and doors during replacement projects away from landfill. In addition to helping installers save money on waste disposal costs, the scheme helps glass manufacturers reduce the need for virgin raw materials and cut energy use, as well as generate funds for charities and

community projects, says the company. As of August 2026, Morley Glass has now produced 4,332 bags of cullet directly through the crushing of old IGUs. Approximately 1 tonne of cullet is generated from every 2 bags of cullet, but this can vary widely, which means the scheme has now surpassed the 3,000 tonne level. The contribution this makes to energy savings for the industry is illustrated by the fact that 1 tonne of cullet saves enough energy to power an average home for 6 months. To date, the volume of cullet generated has equated to 1,674 years of energy saved for an average home, claims the

“Thank you to all our customers who are making the effort to put their old IGUs to one side so we can collect them when we deliver their new Uni-Blinds integral blind units. Many of our customers are already into a routine that seems as normal as recycling glass, metal and plastics at home, which means we will be able to maintain healthy volumes of cullet production – and we will continue to monitor and publish the data.” In addition to the resource savings that the Morley Glass scheme provides, it also generates funds for charities, groups and individuals working on projects to improve their local communities through its GreenVision fund. As every penny generated from the cullet goes into the fund, 452 grants have been provided to date to community projects with environmental or social benefit, with causes ranging from school vegetable growing projects and youth clubs, to support for budding athletes and a cat rescue charity. morleyglass.co.uk

Business Pilot launches Installer’s Operations Review

installers, the review asks 15 straightforward questions across five key operational areas, giving business owners a clear picture of how efficiently their operation is running and where time, resource and profitability could be slipping away. As market conditions continue to challenge installers, improving operational efficiency has become just as important as generating new leads. Many businesses have invested in winning more work, but fewer have taken the opportunity to step back and assess how effectively their operation performs once a sale has been secured, says the company. The Installer’s Operations Review has been developed to provide that perspective. Rather than focusing on individual software features or complex business consultancy, it gives installers an honest assessment of their day-today operation, highlighting strengths, identifying areas for improvement and providing practical next steps. “Running an installation business means you’re constantly moving from one priority to the next,” explained Elton Boocock, managing director at Business Pilot.

Business Pilot has launched the Installer’s Operations Review, a free downloadable review designed to help installation businesses identify operational weaknesses, benchmark their performance and understand where improvements can have the greatest impact. Built specifically for UK window, door and home improvement 10 WINDOW NEWS | SEPTEMBER 2026

“When you’re dealing with enquiries, surveys, installations, customer service and suppliers all at once, it’s easy to assume your processes are working because the jobs keep moving. “The reality is that many businesses have small inefficiencies throughout their operation that gradually cost time, money and customer satisfaction. The Installer’s Operations Review has been designed to help identify those areas before they become bigger issues.”

TRADE NEWS The review covers five core areas of an installation business, from sales processes and operational workflows through to installation handovers and team accountability. By answering 15 straightforward questions, installers receive a clear operational score, a benchmark against best practice and practical guidance on where improvements can be made. Importantly, the review has been designed for the people responsible for keeping installation businesses running. While it has been created primarily for business owners and directors, it is equally valuable for operations managers, office managers and those responsible for overseeing projects from initial enquiry through to final sign-off. “We wanted to create something that installers could complete in a matter of minutes but still walk away with genuinely useful insight,” Elton continued. “It’s not about producing another generic business health check or telling people how to run their business. It’s about helping installers understand where they’re performing well, where there are opportunities to improve and giving them the confidence to make informed operational decisions. “Sometimes the biggest improvements don’t come from winning more work. They come from running the work you already have more efficiently.” The Installer’s Operations Review is available as a free download and can be completed in less than 10 minutes, giving installers a quick and practical way to assess how their business is performing. www.businesspilot.co.uk

Haffner delivers machinery sales growth Machinery innovators Haffner Ltd has reported growth in machinery sales, with sales revenue increasing by 48% this year against a challenging market backdrop. According to the company, the latest figures continue a strong growth trajectory, with machinery sales revenue now 66% higher than in 2024. Haffner has also maintained its margins, underlining the strength of the company’s performance. Matt Thomas, managing director of Haffner, said: “The market remains challenging, which makes a 48% increase in machinery sales revenue this year particularly significant. With sales revenue now 66% higher than in 2024, it demonstrates that fabricators are continuing to invest where they can see a clear and measurable return.” “What is particularly important to us is the quality of that growth. These figures are based purely on new machinery sales across our Haffner, Graf Synergy and Fom Industrie ranges and exclude our service and spare parts revenue. We have also maintained our margins, which further demonstrates the strength of our performance.”

Haffner attributes its continued growth to the strength of its machinery portfolio and fabricators’ increasing focus on automation, productivity and manufacturing efficiencies. Representing Haffner, Graf Synergy and Fom Industrie machinery, the company offers a comprehensive portfolio for PVC-U and aluminium fabrication. Matt continued: “Investment decisions are understandably being scrutinised carefully, but fabricators recognise that the right machinery can deliver significant commercial benefits. Whether that is reducing labour dependency, increasing output, improving finish quality or creating additional manufacturing capacity, there remains a strong appetite to invest where the business case is clear.” “Having Haffner, Graf Synergy and Fom Industrie within our portfolio means we can offer solutions across virtually every area of PVC-U and aluminium fabrication and identify the machinery that will deliver the greatest value for each operation.” www.haffnerltd.com

Whiteline cuts aluminium prices by absorbing surcharge

Rather than wait for market conditions to shift, Whiteline has acted to give its customers a tangible commercial advantage right now.

Louise Evans is the group managing director at Whiteline Manufacturing

Window and door fabricator Whiteline Manufacturing has taken decisive action to ease cost pressures across the industry for its aluminium products. In early July, the fabricator announced that it would absorb its aluminium surcharge in full with immediate effect, resulting in a direct reduction in prices for its customers. The move, effective from 1st July, means that whilst supplier surcharges remain an industrywide reality, Whiteline has decided to absorb that cost internally rather than pass it on. The result, says the company, is straightforward: lower prices, with no reduction in product quality or service levels. The announcement comes at a time when economic uncertainty impacts cost pressures that continue to squeeze margins across the fenestration sector.

Alongside the absorption of the surcharge, Whiteline has confirmed that its aluminium lead times now stand at just three weeks, significantly ahead of the industry average of four to six weeks. Whiteline says customers can therefore expect not only better pricing, but faster turnaround without any compromise on the quality the brand is known for. The PVCu surcharge remains under active review, with Whiteline confirming it is working to address this as its next priority. Louise Evans, group managing director at Whiteline Manufacturing, said: “We understand the cost pressures many of our customers are facing right now, and we want them to know that we are firmly on their side. Absorbing the aluminium surcharge in full is one practical way we can help ease that pressure and give our partners greater confidence when pricing and securing work. Our customers rely on us for quality, service and reliability, and with our current threeweek aluminium lead times, we are focused on giving them the support they need to stay competitive and keep moving forward.” To find out more, visit www.whiteline.co.uk

Euroglaze reaches 15% Rio milestone the design flexibility of the system, with a choice of chamfered or sculptured frames, means it looks just as good in cottages and period homes as it does in contemporary developments.

Euroglaze has reached a significant milestone, with 15% of its output now in Rehau’s Rio Flush Sash system. The Barnsley based trade fabricator says demand is at record levels for both windows and doors in Rio, with Rio doors in particular seeing sales rise from 7.9% of door output to 13.5% since the start of the year. Nicky Park, Euroglaze’s senior business development associate, says that trade customers supplying premium and higher value contracts are behind much of the increase: “We know that consumer demand is strongest at the higher end of the market where cost of living pressures are a bit less, and our customers are using Rio very successfully to get a bigger share of that. “The system has the clean, authentic lines that retail buyers like, and it has maximum appeal because

“It has U-Values as low as 1.3 W/m²K and PAS24 accreditation so there are no compromises to be made on performance or security, and it is also available in a wide range of colours and woodgrain finishes, including the stylish Turner Oak which is proving increasingly popular for both windows and doors. “Of course, like all the Rehau systems, Rio is very easy to fit and, because it is manufactured in Euroglaze’s super-efficient factory, it is available on short lead times and with our renowned, precision quality finish.” Euroglaze built its 45-year reputation on being able to supply frames in all of Rehau’s systems. Alongside Rio windows and doors, Euroglaze also fabricates the complete range of Rehau Total 70 windows and doors, the Heritage vertical slider, Slinova patio and even the Rauferno fire rated window.

Eurocell relocates

Aberdeen South branch

to new modern trade hub

Eurocell, specialist in home improvement products, has relocated its Aberdeen South trade branch to a new, modern site featuring its latest modern branch format and a dedicated Windows & Doors display showroom. Located at Unit 5 Wellington Trade Park, Wellington Road, Aberdeen, AB11 8DG, the new branch is now open and provides local tradespeople with an improved space to browse Eurocell’s extensive range of products, including its windows and doors. The new format has been designed to give installers and their customers a more engaging experience when choosing products, with dedicated displays allowing them to see different styles, colours and configurations in person before making a decision., says the company. Graham Garden, assistant store manager at the branch, said: “We’re really pleased to have opened the new Aberdeen South branch and to be bringing Eurocell’s new modern format to the area. The new site gives us a much-improved space

to showcase our Windows & Doors range, making it easier for our trade customers to explore the products and find the right solution for their projects. “We know how important it is for installers to be able to see and get a feel for products before they specify them, and the new showroom gives them the opportunity to do exactly that. We’re looking forward to welcoming both new and existing customers through the doors and continuing to support the local trade.” The Aberdeen South branch offers a wide selection of Eurocell products for trade customers, including PVC-U and aluminium windows and doors, composite doors, roofline products, and outdoor solutions such as fencing and decking. Why Alim Window

winning by doing At a time when many fabricators are diversifying from PVC-U into aluminium to capture premium market share, Hampshire-based Alimax is boldly bucking the trend. Founded seven years ago by Mark Matthews, David Gower and Ginnette Polychronopulos on the edge of the New Forest, the trade-only manufacturer has built a stellar reputation for premium aluminium windows and doors, says the company. According to the company, true to their customer-first approach, when their loyal installer base kept asking for PVC-U products delivered with the same uncompromising service, Alimax

didn’t hesitate. They invested in a new mezzanine-floor, dedicated PVC-U fabrication line, utilising the premium VEKA Omnia doubleflush system, System 10 and Rustique. To ensure this new line was backed by the right hardware from day one, they turned to their trusted long-term hardware partner, Window Ware. “Our installers chose our path for us,” explains Mark Matthews, director of Alimax. “They loved our aluminium service and wanted the same quality in PVC-U. But launching a new line from scratch requires flawless execution. We’ve worked with Window Ware throughout our careers; whenever

we move, we always come back to them. They were the natural choice to help us spec, source, and secure the hardware for this new venture.” Window Ware’s role went far beyond simply supplying components. They worked closely with the Alimax team to advise on and spec the perfect hardware package to suit the new VEKA system, including high-security Yale door and window locking systems, Armis handles, and Eurospec cylinders. Because Alimax prioritises a lean, agile operation, they choose not to tie up capital and space in massive hardware stock. Instead, they rely on Window Ware’s robust logistical infrastructure, says the company. Les Maros, area sales manager at Alimax, explains, “In this industry, everyone wants everything yesterday. We don’t have the storage space to carry a large inventory, but with Window Ware, we don’t need to. They act as an

extension of our own warehouse. Their high stock levels, dependable next-day delivery, and brilliant, easy-to-work-with team keep our production line moving seamlessly.” For Window Ware, Alimax’s success comes down to doing business with people you trust. Mark Barzotelli, Window Ware area sales manager, comments: “Alimax proves that when you focus on quality, precision, and strong partnerships, you can achieve remarkable growth even in a challenging market. We are proud to have supported them in setting up this new fabrication line, ensuring they have the reliable, top-tier hardware needed to uphold their fantastic reputation.” With the PVC-U line thriving, Alimax is already recruiting for fabrication staff and exploring future-proof innovations, including Yale’s SensCheck-ready smart hardware. www.windowware.co.uk

Q2 Merchant sales down -1.2% year-on-year. Prices rise

+5.8%. Volumes fall -6.6% The latest Builders Merchant Building Index (BMBI) report reveals builders’ merchants’ Q2 2026 like-for-like value sales, adjusted to remove the impact of trading days, -1.2% lower than Q2 2025. Like-for-like volume sales were down -6.6%, but prices increased +5.8%. With no difference in trading days, unadjusted Q2 total value

sales were also down -1.2% year-on-year. By value, only three of the twelve categories sold more: Services (+7.3%), Workwear & Safetywear (+4.5%) and Miscellaneous (+2.3%). Of the two largest categories, Heavy Building Materials fell -2.6%, while Timber & Joinery Products was flat (0.0%). Renewables & Water Saving (-3.8%) was the weakest

Nine categories sold more by unadjusted value with Services (+11.7%), Workwear & Safetywear (+11.1%), and Miscellaneous (+9.7%) performing best. Heavy Building Materials was up just +0.5% but Timber & Joinery Products (+3.1%) outperformed Total Builders Merchants (+2.2%). The joint weakest categories were Ironmongery (-1.1%) and Renewables & Water Saving (-1.1%). In the 12 months July 2025 to June 2026, like-for-like value sales were down -1.5% compared to the previous 12-months (July 2024 to June 2025). Like-for-like volume sales were down -4.3% but prices increased +2.9%. With no difference in trading days, unadjusted value sales were also -1.5% lower. By unadjusted value, seven categories sold more, led by Renewables and Water Saving (+8.5%). Timber and Joinery Products grew by +1.0%, while Heavy Building Materials was weakest (-3.7%). Mike Rigby, MD of MRA Research who produce this report, says: “Overall construction output is anaemic, as the latest ONS data reveals a +0.3% increase in Q2 output compared to Q1 but -2.0% lower than Q2 2025. Five out of the nine construction sectors grew in Q2 2026 with infrastructure new work, the strongest up, +1.9%.

“Despite monthly construction output falling -0.1% in June, following a decrease of -0.8% in May, and a decrease of -0.1% in April, the overall level of output in Q2 was higher than in Q1, the ONS says, because the fall in April 2026 followed a particularly strong March. “Housebuilding continues to meet significant headwinds. The

latest National House Building Council (NHBC) numbers put Q2 new home registrations down -4.0% year-on-year, with cost pressures and geopolitical uncertainty affecting house builders’ performance. The prolonged dry weather has also thrown a new issue into the mix – water. Analysis by Public First, commissioned by Water UK, shows that England only has sufficient water for 420,000 of the 1.5 million homes the government wants built during its parliamentary term. “The appointment of Andy Burnham as Prime Minister has lifted spirits though. Alongside England’s World Cup success and months of wall-to-wall sunshine, the GfK Consumer Confidence Index is looking more optimistic, with August’s figure showing a three-point overall improvement compared to July, and a five-point increase in people’s views on the general economic situation over the coming 12 months. Better yet, there was a five-point jump in the Major Purchase Index; a good omen for residential RMI projects.” Set up and run by MRA Research, the BMBI – a brand of the Builders Merchants Federation – is a monthly index of builders’ merchant sales, and the most reliable, up-to-date proxy for Repair, Maintenance, and Improvement (RMI) activity in the UK. The index is based on actual sales from NiQ GfK’s Builders’ Merchant Point of Sale Tracking Data, which captures value sales out to builders from generalist builders’ merchants, accounting for 88% of total sales from builders’ merchants throughout Great Britain. An in-depth review, which includes commentary by sector experts, is produced each quarter. The Q2 2026 BMBI report is available to download at www.bmbi.co.uk

Crittall reinforces trademark protection

following legal ruling Crittall Windows is reinforcing the importance of protecting its iconic steel window and door brand following a UK Intellectual Property Office ruling that declared a similar trademark invalid. The UKIPO decision reflects Crittall’s long-standing commitment to safeguarding a name that has become synonymous with authentic steel windows and doors. Built over more than 175 years, the Crittall brand is recognised for British manufacturing, quality and

enduring design. Following a challenge by the Essex-based firm, the tribunal concluded that a Crittall Style Doors trademark was likely to create confusion with the existing Crittall trademark and had been registered in bad faith. The trademark has been declared invalid and Crittall was awarded costs. Russell Ager, managing director of Crittall Windows, said: “The Crittall name represents more than 175 years of British

manufacturing and innovation. Protecting our trademark helps ensure architects, specifiers, homeowners and trade customers can continue to identify genuine Crittall products with confidence.” The Crittall trademark was registered in 1928 to protect the company’s name and reputation. Today, it ensures that the Crittall name is reserved exclusively for windows manufactured by the firm, giving customers confidence in the quality and authenticity of every product. By protecting its trademark, Crittall is helping to distinguish genuine products from those marketed using similar branding, preserving the integrity of one of Britain’s bestknown names in steel windows and doors. www.crittall-windows.co.uk

sliding-sash and dual turn windows to reach whole-window U-values down to 1.1 W/m²K, without adding unnecessary weight or compromising their classic timber appearance. TripleEco28’s performance comes from its multilayer construction, built around a 1.1mm Monolithic Glass Core. This ultra-thin central pane reduces the unit’s weight to 22.8 kg/m² compared with 30 kg/ m² for standard triple glazing. It also creates larger argon-filled cavities within the 28mm profile, avoiding the need for expensive krypton as an insulating gas. In addition, TripleEco28 has two low-E coatings that work together as a double heat-reflecting shield: an inner coating that reduces heat loss in the winter and an outer solar-control coating with a Gg-value of 0.3451, which blocks approximately 65% of solar heat gain. Allan Brothers says the glazed units have an excellent colour rendering index (Ra) of 95.3, and are available with toughened or laminated glass, for enhanced security and acoustic performance. As the unit’s Monolithic Core is made from glass rather than synthetic materials, standard TripleEco28 units are highly recyclable at the end of their service life.

Allan Brothers has become one of the first British manufacturers to offer TripleEco28, a new ultralight triple glazing solution, across its Crafted range of solid timber windows and doors. Whereas conventional triple glazing typically requires thicker, heavier units, TripleEco28 delivers the thermal performance of 40mm triple glazing in a slimmer 28mm profile while being 24% lighter. As a result, the lighter units allow for larger glazed areas, without bulky supporting frames, while achieving a glass U-value (Ug)

of 0.8 W/m²K. With this weight reduction, the units are also easier for installers to handle and fit on-site, says the company. According to Allan Brothers, this Ug value allows the Crafted

Morten Bach Valsted, managing director of Allan Brothers, said, “TripleEco28 is a real game changer for us. expands delivery fleet Morley Glass, the UK’s largest bespoke integral blinds manufacturer, has expanded its vehicle fleet by adding three new vans to further enhance its delivery reliability and customer service, says the company. The new vehicles take the company’s fleet of delivery vans to 28, all of which are owned and operated by Morley Glass. As the fleet enables the company to have more control of the final stage of the supply chain, it is central to providing window and door fabricators and installers with the industry’s shortest lead times on made-to-order ScreenLine integral blinds, according to the company. Over more than 20 years of manufacturing integral blinds, a key focus for Morley Glass has been to provide rapid, reliable service from the initial quote through to aftersales care. That

has enabled the company to maintain lead times of as little as 10-12 working days on UniBlinds integral blinds ordered by its weekly cut-off time of 10am on Thursdays. Ian Short, managing director of Morley Glass, said, “Having our own delivery fleet is really important to our business because it ensures we can offer a service with speed and reliability at the core. Despite the best efforts of outsourced couriers and hauliers, they can never match the reliability that we can achieve in-house because we can closely monitor all aspects of delivery planning,

It also means we can use our vans to collect post-consumer IGUs that our customers remove during window and door replacement projects so they can be crushed for recycling at our factory.” All Morley Glass units feature ScreenLine systems manufactured in mainland Europe. This allows products to be delivered by road from Pellini S.p.A. factories in Italy and the Czech Republic, avoiding the delays often associated with sea and air transportation. The systems supplied by Pellini go into as many as 4,000 Venetian and pleated Uni-Blinds integral blind units every week, all manufactured at its state-of-the-art factory near Leeds and delivered to customers across Britain. morleyglass.co.uk

Why collaboration is shaping the future of the glass and glazing industry The challenges facing the glass and glazing industry continue to evolve. From changing regulations and product safety reforms to energy efficiency targets and skills development, businesses are navigating an increasingly complex landscape. Meeting these challenges requires organisations across the industry to work together, share

expertise and contribute towards common goals, according to the federation. Collaboration has always been at the heart of the Glass and Glazing Federation’s approach. By bringing together members, government departments, regulators and technical experts, the Federation helps ensure the

industry’s voice is heard, and businesses have the opportunity to contribute to the conversations shaping the future of the sector, claims the federation. Over the past year, this collaborative approach has become increasingly important. The GGF has continued to engage with government consultations on topics including the Future Homes Standard, Approved Document B, construction product reform and wider building safety initiatives. These discussions help ensure the practical experience of manufacturers, installers and suppliers is reflected as new

Collaboration also plays an important role within the GGF’s technical groups, where members discuss industry challenges, share best practice and contribute to the development of future guidance. These groups encourage open discussion, bringing together businesses from across the supply chain to exchange experience and support practical solutions. Regional meetings provide another opportunity for members to connect with the wider industry. Events across England, Scotland and Wales allow businesses to hear the latest updates, discuss shared challenges and strengthen professional relationships. Lauren Mawford, director of the Glass and Glazing Federation, said: “The challenges facing our industry are best addressed when businesses, regulators and stakeholders work together. By sharing knowledge, contributing expertise and engaging in meaningful discussion, we can help shape positive change and support a stronger future for the glass and glazing industry.” For individual businesses, collaboration creates opportunities to learn from others, stay up to date with regulatory developments, access expert technical guidance and contribute to discussions that influence future standards and best practice, says the federation. www.ggf.org.uk

John Fredericks Plastics (JFP) has continued its long-term programme of investment with the installation of a new Haffner seamless cill welder, further enhancing efficiency across its manufacturing operation, says the company. The new machine has been introduced to optimise workflow at a key stage in the fabrication process, supporting increasing volumes and ensuring smooth throughput across the factory. By partially automating the cill welding process, JFP has strengthened consistent quality, reduced wastage, increased efficiency whilst offering customers a higher quality finish of products, claims the company. Mark Dicconson, managing director of JFP, said: “As demand continues to grow, we’re constantly reviewing our processes to identify where we can refine and improve. The cill welding stage was a natural area to enhance,

and investing in dedicated machinery ensures we maintain efficiency as volumes increase. “We’ve always taken a proactive approach. It’s about making the right investments at the right time to support our team, protect quality and give our customers complete confidence in our capability.” The installation forms part of JFP’s wider strategy of continual reinvestment in machinery, facilities and systems. In recent years, the company has upgraded key areas of its production facility to increase automation, improve workflow and futureproof capacity in line with customer demand. According to the company, this latest addition further strengthens JFP’s manufacturing platform, positioning the business for continued, sustainable growth. www.johnfredericks.co.uk

TrustMark helps reduce

Ombudsman fees or warranty costs.

Ayers MBE, chief executive project admin and costs whilst Simon officer of TrustMark, said: “Last Friday’s move by Government a welcome and clear signal enhancing consumer protection was of intent – to protect consumers,

champion reputable traders, and help people spend their money with real confidence and security. Aftercare and resolution when something goes wrong matters, but just as important, and often less visible, is what happens when everything goes right and it’s simply time to pay. That’s where a huge amount of consumer and trade anxiety sits. Consumers pay up front with no security in place or warranty protection, and tradespeople doing good work are having to chase payment.

TrustMark has announced a new collaboration with Trusted Payments, a consumer-protection, app-based service that helps TrustMark Registered Businesses give their customers an easy, secure and transparent way to manage home improvements, from quote to completion. The announcement follows the Government’s own package of measures unveiled on Friday 28 August to protect consumers from cowboy builders and rogue bailiffs, which named Trusted Payments among the schemes helping to raise standards across the home improvement sector. TrustMark welcomes this announcement and is pleased to be part of the drive, working with Trusted Payments to help deliver greater protection for consumers and businesses alike. For TrustMark Registered Businesses, Trusted Payments is a service designed to make it straightforward to agree scope,

pricing and milestones with a customer at the start of a home improvement project. Features include automatic contracts, project payment plans, and automatic invoice chasing, plus access to the Dispute Resolution Ombudsman for unresolved issues, including non-payment, snagging and the handover process. From October 2026, it will also automatically raise invoices into QuickBooks or Xero. Businesses can manage the whole process by WhatsApp, email or website. TruskMark says that for consumers, Trusted Payments offers peace of mind throughout the project journey and they will be supported by project and postcompletion warranties. They will also have the ability to manage their project, agree and amend payments as work progresses, access advice, and follow a guided snagging and handover process, all without having to pay for project fees, transaction fees,

“The best form of consumer protection is getting the job right the first time. Giving businesses a payment system that’s simple to use, backed up by proper dispute management and workmanship guarantees, means they can focus on what they do best — quality technical installations. Protecting consumers and supporting them through the complaints process in the context of poor installations in their homes is vital to the delivery of trust in the sector. We’re proud to be playing our part alongside Trusted Payments in making that happen.” John Herriman of the Chartered Trading Standards Institute said: “We back Trusted Payments to help both installers and homeowners to achieve better outcomes. makes Future Products’ operations virtually solar powered Composite door manufacturer and PVCu window and door fabricator, Future Products, has installed more than one thousand panels on the roof of its Nottinghamshire-based operations, as part of efforts to improve operational efficiencies and support its long-term growth strategy, according to the company. The Liniar fabricator invested £500,000 into the installation of 1200 solar panels on its 77,000 sq. ft Mansfield facility. The array of panels is set to generate 100,000 kWh of renewable energy each month – enough to power 95% of Future Products’ operational energy requirements

– and reduce the company’s energy costs by a whopping 85%, claims the company. With recent statistics from Make UK revealing that 90% of manufacturers have seen their energy bills increase since 2022, and over half citing energy costs as their biggest business challenge, becoming energy selfsufficient is a significant step for the fabricator in future-proofing its operations, says the company. This investment forms part of Future Products’ ongoing programme of operational improvement, helping to increase efficiency, reduce overheads and ensure the business remains as

competitive as possible in an evolving market. Andrew Francis, finance director, Future Products, explains the reason behind the move: “Energy prices have been high for some time, and with the landscape still volatile, being able to access all of our electricity requirements from our own solar generation is a key investment and one that underlines our commitment to the future of our business, and, in turn, supports our customers.” Andrew concludes: “The solar investment will help us to reduce our energy costs and reliance on external suppliers, and creates greater capacity to invest in our people, products and facilities. With Clean Power 2030 and Net Zero on the horizon, it is also a practical investment that supports our sustainability objectives as well as our ambitions for future growth.” www.futureproductsltd.com

Jade achieves double ISO certification as it continues to grow Jade Engineering has announced it has once again achieved internationally recognised management standards, marking the culmination of a major twoyear programme of investment and creating a stronger platform for the company’s next phase of growth. The Coventry-based machinery and tooling specialist has secured ISO 9001:2015 certification for quality management and ISO 45001:2018 certification for occupational health and safety. Both certifications have been awarded by BSI following a rigorous independent assessment of Jade’s systems, procedures and working practices. For Jade, the achievement represents considerably more than gaining two certificates. It represents the massive effort directors Adam Jones and Sean Mackey have poured into the

business over the last three years. Over the past three years, Jade has invested close to £5 million in its manufacturing facilities, equipment, infrastructure and internal processes. The company has also continued to develop its product range and specialist engineering capabilities, enabling it to respond more effectively to the changing requirements of window and door fabricators. Sean Mackey, co-director of Jade Engineering, said: “Achieving ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 is the culmination of three years of sustained investment in our facilities, infrastructure, systems and people. We have worked hard to build a business that is properly equipped for the future, rather than simply reacting to the demands of today. “The certification process has

required us to examine every part of the way we operate. It has helped us identify where we are performing well, where we can become more efficient and how we can deliver an even more consistent service to our customers. “We now have the facilities, structure and foundations in place. The focus is firmly on growth: expanding our capabilities, developing new solutions and helping more fabricators improve the quality, efficiency and profitability of their production.” ISO 9001 provides a framework through which Jade can monitor performance, maintain consistency and drive continuous improvement. Central to the standard is a clear understanding of customer requirements—something Jade believes is essential in an industry where production challenges can vary significantly between individual fabricators. Sean continued: “Listening to customers has always been central to how Jade operates. Some of our best developments have

TRADE NEWS started with a fabricator explaining a production problem and asking whether there is a better, safer or more efficient way to solve it. “ISO 9001 strengthens that process by ensuring customer feedback is captured, reviewed and used to support measurable improvement. It gives customers further reassurance that quality is controlled throughout the business—not inspected into a product at the very end.” ISO 45001 reflects Jade’s parallel commitment to providing a

safe, well-managed working environment for its employees and visitors. It also complements the company’s wider focus on engineering machinery and tooling that helps fabricators reduce manual intervention and adopt safer, more controlled manufacturing processes, says the company. Sean concluded: “Growth only works if it is built on solid foundations. These certifications give us a robust framework through which we can grow while continuing to improve.

Crittall strengthens W20 with PAS 24 certification

Crittall Windows has secured PAS 24:2022 certification for its Crittall W20 steel door system and thermally enhanced W20 TE variant, providing independent verification of their security performance, says the company. The achievement is proof that the systems meet one of the UK’s most widely recognised security standards for doors and windows. This gives architects, specifiers and developers confidence when choosing steel glazing solutions, according to the company. PAS 24, overseen by the British Standards Institution

(BSI), assesses the ability of doorsets and windows to resist the methods of attack commonly associated with opportunist burglary. Products undergo rigorous testing to demonstrate their security performance under sustained physical attack. The certification reflects the growing importance of evidencebased specification within the construction sector, where security is assessed alongside thermal performance, weather resistance and sustainability. PAS24 certification also ensures compliance with Approved Document Q of the building regulations – ‘Security in Dwellings’

“They also demonstrate to customers, employees and prospective partners that Jade is serious about quality, safety and long-term investment. We are proud of what the team has achieved, but this is not the finishing line. It is the foundation for what comes next.” Jade Engineering’s ISO 9001:2015 certification is valid until August 2029, while its ISO 45001:2018 certification runs until February 2029, subject to the required ongoing assessments. Crittall W20 has been developed to retain the slim sightlines and refined appearance that have made Crittall’s steel glazing a defining architectural feature for almost two centuries. Manufactured from galvanised steel and available in a wide range of configurations and finishes, the system combines robust construction with the flexibility needed for a variety of applications, says the company. The thermally enhanced W20 TE variant delivers U-values as low as 1.4 W/m²K while maintaining the characteristic aesthetic associated with the Crittall name, claims the company. Russell Ager, managing director of Crittall Windows, said: “Steel has always been associated with strength and durability, but today’s market demands independently verified performance. “Achieving PAS 24 certification for our Crittall W20 and W20 TE door systems demonstrates that architects and specifiers can achieve the security standards required for modern buildings without compromising the slim profiles and design flexibility that make steel such an enduring choice.” www.crittall-windows.co.uk

Homeowners can also view examples of previous installations, find out whether an installer has a showroom, and what products they have on show, all helping them make a more informed decision before making contact, according to the company. For installers, meanwhile, being part of The Residence Collection Installer scheme provides an opportunity to put their business in front of homeowners actively considering Residence Collection premium window and door systems.

Business Pilot partners

with Rilla to bring AI sales

coaching to glazing installers

Business Pilot has announced a new partnership with AI sales coaching platform Rilla, giving glazing installers access to powerful new technology that reveals what happens during sales appointments and helps teams convert more enquiries into orders. The partnership combines Business Pilot’s market-leading CRM platform with Rilla’s AIpowered conversation intelligence, allowing installation businesses to connect everything that happens before, during and after a customer appointment. For many installers, improving conversion rates remains one of the biggest opportunities for growth. Business Pilot’s latest UK Window & Door Installer Report found that around six in ten enquiries still do not convert into sales, highlighting the importance of making every appointment count. While Business Pilot provides visibility of the customer journey before and after an appointment, the sales conversation itself has traditionally remained a blind spot. The new partnership changes that by allowing installers to understand exactly what their highest-performing salespeople do differently and use those insights to coach the wider team.

Rilla records and analyses in-home and showroom appointments using AI, providing detailed insights into everything from objection handling and talk ratios to when finance is introduced and how top performers guide conversations through to a sale. That intelligence feeds directly into Business Pilot, giving businesses a more complete picture of every opportunity. “Generating enquiries has never been the whole story,” said Elton Boocock, managing director of Business Pilot. “Our Installer Report showed there is still a significant opportunity for businesses to improve conversion rates. The question has always been why one salesperson consistently converts more business than another. “Business Pilot already gives installers complete visibility of their pipeline and helps them manage every stage of the customer journey. By partnering with Rilla, we’re now giving them

38 WINDOW NEWS | SEPTEMBER 2026

visibility into the sales conversation itself, helping businesses understand what drives successful appointments and use those insights to improve performance across the whole team.” Rilla has analysed more than 2.2 million home improvement sales conversations, identifying consistent behaviours that separate top-performing salespeople from the rest. Its data shows that higher-performing representatives ask more open questions, spend more time listening and introduce financing at key points during the appointment, all of which contribute to stronger conversion rates and higher average order values. The integration also removes the need for advisers to manually record detailed appointment notes. Key information discussed during the meeting, including customer objections, agreed actions and next steps, flows directly into Business Pilot, improving follow-up and reducing administration. “Glazing businesses invest heavily in generating leads, yet the most important part of the customer journey has often been the hardest to measure,” said Sebastian Jimenez, founder and CEO of Rilla. “Our partnership with Business Pilot changes that. Together we’re helping installers understand exactly what happens during every appointment and giving managers the tools to coach every member of the team using real conversations and real data. That creates more consistent sales performance and helps businesses make better decisions based on evidence rather than instinct.” The partnership is available to Business Pilot customers looking to improve sales performance, strengthen coaching and gain greater insight into every stage of the customer journey. www.businesspilot.co.uk

The Business Pilot Barometer Conversion strengthens as summer activity slows

By Neil Cooper-Smith, Senior Analyst, Business Pilot

August’s data paints a picture of a more selective market, with lead and sales volumes easing as the summer progressed, while conversion rates and average order values continued to strengthen. This suggests that although fewer opportunities are 40 WINDOW NEWS | SEPTEMBER 2026

entering the pipeline, installers are continuing to make good use of the enquiries they receive. This builds on the trend highlighted in July’s Barometer, when steady sales, improving conversion rates and recovering order values pointed towards increasingly efficient sales performance. August extends that picture, with conversion reaching its highest level of the threemonth period despite a further reduction in overall activity. Conversion rates edged up from 40.8% in July to 41.0% in August, building on June’s 39.8%. The movement is modest, but the direction of travel remains encouraging. Conversion has now improved for two consecutive months, suggesting installers are continuing to turn a greater proportion of enquiries into confirmed work.

VIEWPOINT Lead volumes saw a more pronounced change, falling from 108.6 in July to 99.5 in August, a reduction of around 8%. This follows June’s peak of 116.1 and means enquiry volumes have now eased for two consecutive months. Seasonality is likely to play a role, with August traditionally affected by the school holidays and households spending more time away from home. Sales followed a similar pattern, falling from 54.1 in July to 47.8 in August, a decline of around 12%. The reduction reflects the softer flow of enquiries through the market and reinforces the importance of maintaining strong conversion performance when the number of opportunities available is more limited.

to 2.9% in July, up from 2.6% in June, with housing and household services among the main contributors to the increase. The Bank of England also held Bank Rate at 3.75% at its July meeting, reflecting continued caution around inflation and the impact of energy prices. At the same time, there are encouraging signs around consumer sentiment. The GfK Consumer Confidence Index rose three points to -14 in August, its highest level for two years. While confidence remains in negative territory, the improvement suggests households are becoming more optimistic about their finances and the wider economy.

Average order values provide a more encouraging signal. Having recovered from £3,666 in June to £4,000 in July, they increased again to £4,094 in August. This represents a further rise of just over 2% month-on-month and suggests that customers who are committing to home improvement projects continue to invest at relatively healthy levels.

For the home improvement sector, this creates a nuanced environment. Customers remain considered in their spending decisions, but those entering the market appear willing to commit to meaningful projects. For installers, the ability to identify genuine opportunities, respond quickly and maintain effective follow-up becomes increasingly valuable when overall enquiry volumes are more variable.

Lead times increased slightly from 22.6 days in July to 23.5 days in August. They remain below June’s 24.1 days, suggesting that businesses continue to maintain relatively efficient turnaround times despite the month-to-month movement in activity. Taken together, August’s figures highlight the growing importance of quality and conversion in the current market. Lead and sales volumes have softened through the summer, while businesses continue to convert a greater proportion of enquiries and average project values have moved higher. The wider economic picture provides an interesting backdrop. UK CPI inflation rose

This is where Business Pilot continues to provide valuable support. By giving installers real-time visibility across leads, conversions, order values and operational performance, it allows businesses to understand where opportunities are coming from, identify changes in customer behaviour and make informed decisions based on what is happening within their own pipelines. As the market moves out of the summer holiday period, the coming months will provide a clearer indication of whether August’s softer activity was primarily seasonal or forms part of a broader trend. What the latest figures already show is that strong conversion and healthy order values continue to provide installers with a solid foundation as market conditions evolve. VIEWPOINT input is during the specification and planning of larger or more complex contracts, where a small error can be repeated across many properties. “The specification of a window or door is really important,” says Lee. “If you start off on the wrong foot, you’re going to end up in a dispute situation.” While a mistake at the specification stage may appear relatively minor when looking at an individual property, the consequences can be significant if the mistake is repeated across a large development.

When should installers

bring in RISA? RISA are usually called in when window and door installers are already entrenched in a dispute, but by that point, what may have started as a relatively straightforward technical issue can be much harder to resolve. Here, RISA explains how earlier intervention can help protect installers’ reputations, margins and customer relationships. Most window and door installers do not involve RISA until they are already on the back foot – perhaps facing threatened or active legal action. While installers can call on RISA for technical support at a much earlier stage, in practice the organisation is disproportionately brought in once a dispute has already escalated and positions have hardened. “That isn’t always the best time to bring us in,” explains Lee Galley, inspection manager, RISA. “The earlier we can address the situation and give the consumer some confidence in what the installer is doing, the better.” While RISA’s involvement may not

be required for straightforward domestic installations, early technical input can be invaluable on more complex projects, particularly where specification, exposure, design interfaces or contractual requirements introduce additional risk. “We can get in at the very beginning of a project if you’ve got something really complex that’s going on,” says Dave Mechem, managing director, RISA and FENSA. “That early intervention allows us to get in there and spot those problems before they happen.” Get the specification right One of the most useful opportunities for early RISA

42 WINDOW NEWS | SEPTEMBER 2026

“An example of that is a large housing association contract I visited in the Midlands a few years ago, where the survey information had missed the requirement for safety glass next to a door and that detail had then been repeated across every property,” explains Dave. “If one piece of safety glass is missing, it’s a problem that can quite easily be fixed. But in this case, there were hundreds of houses and hundreds of units that needed to be changed. “It got very expensive very quickly for what was, in principle, a basic specification error. On a large contract, identifying that kind of issue early can prevent it being replicated across hundreds of units,” Dave warns. Consider the location Installers must also consider whether the products being specified are appropriate for the environment in which they will be installed. This is particularly relevant in coastal and highly exposed locations – including parts of the South West, Scotland and other areas subject to severe weather – Continued on page 44

where RISA regularly encounters window and door installations that are not appropriately specified for the conditions they face. “We can check those things up front to help installers establish whether the chosen product is capable of meeting the demands of its intended environment before it reaches site,” confirms Lee. Bridging the gap With the specialist knowledge needed to make important specification decisions often held by more than one person or organisation, RISA can also play a key role in bringing this information together. “There is specialist knowledge that, a lot of the time, the developers themselves and the architects don’t have,” explains Lee. “There is sometimes a disconnect between the people that are actually purchasing these windows and the people that actually make those calculations about their air tightness and water resistance values, such as the systems companies, for instance. RISA sits in the middle to help link those parties together.” Proactive, not reactive For installers, RISA should not simply be viewed as a dispute resolution service to call once matters have become entrenched. Its expertise can be used proactively on complex specifications, larger contracts and emerging technical concerns to help identify problems earlier, reduce the likelihood of escalation and protect margins, reputation and customer relationships in the process. www.risaltd.co.uk

Time to start

a different conversation about A By Carrie Tallet, product manager, Forterro

Automation, integrated CNC machine links and modern business software have transformed the window, door and façade industry. Fabricators routinely achieve levels of workflow consistency and operational predictability that would have been unimaginable just 10 or 15 years ago. Solutions such as EvoNet and Logikal MES also allow

businesses to monitor operational performance in unprecedented detail. It is now possible to see what is happening across an entire production environment at the touch of a button – a significant achievement. However, as with any manufacturing business, greater automation changes where attention needs to be focused. A production plan may still be

running efficiently while costs begin to shift beneath the surface. Orders may continue to move through established workflows even as supplier issues or delivery risks start to build in the background. None of these developments necessarily signals an immediate problem, but they may indicate that assumptions which previously held true are no longer reliable. Visibility alone does not guarantee control. The information businesses need often already exists somewhere within the organisation, but it remains isolated across procurement, production, finance or customer service. The real challenge is recognising what matters before the impact becomes obvious. Operational issues rarely develop because of a single event. More often, they emerge gradually across different parts of the business. A procurement problem may not affect production immediately, while a delay may only become apparent later through missed delivery dates. Viewed individually, these developments can appear routine. Their significance often only becomes clear when the effects begin to surface elsewhere in the organisation, by which point the available options may already be more limited. This is a very different challenge from simply executing processes efficiently, and one where automation may effectively have reached its natural limit. This is where the industry needs to start having a different conversation about AI. Set aside the AI tools designed simply to speed up repetitive tasks. The real opportunity is understanding how AI can help businesses interpret what is happening across their operations while there is still time to respond.

Businesses are unlikely to benefit from another disconnected source of information. At Forterro, we are seeing customers looking to use AI within the workflows where work is already taking place. Their objective is to identify operational risks, emerging opportunities and developing issues before they become visible elsewhere in the business. It is easy to assume that AI and automation are the same thing because the two are closely connected. They are not. The distinction matters because they serve different purposes.

warehouse robotics or production planning, combining AI with automation enables manufacturers to respond faster and with greater confidence. This ability to recognise change earlier is becoming increasingly valuable. Rising costs, supplier performance issues and shifts in demand rarely appear overnight. They build gradually before affecting margins, delivery performance or customer satisfaction. The earlier these changes are identified, the more options businesses have available. That could mean spotting margin pressure before month-end reporting, recognising delivery risks before customers notice them, identifying changes in demand before inventory becomes a problem, or uncovering connections across procurement, production, finance and service that would otherwise remain hidden. For much of the past decade, the focus has been on making manufacturing operations more efficient and predictable. That remains essential, particularly in today’s challenging market.

Carrie Tallet

Automation is focused on execution, enabling organisations to carry out processes consistently, accurately and at scale. AI, by contrast, helps businesses understand what is changing around those processes, highlighting patterns, risks and opportunities that may require attention. The greatest value comes when the two work together. AI can identify an emerging issue, while automation ensures a timely and consistent response. Whether that involves workflow orchestration,

At the same time, many manufacturers are recognising that predictability has its limits. Processes may continue to perform as expected while the conditions around them begin to change. That is reshaping expectations of industrial software. The question is no longer simply how systems help businesses execute processes more efficiently, but how quickly they can recognise the changes that will affect those processes next. For fabricators across the window, door and façade sector, that is becoming an increasingly important conversation. www.forterro.com/en/windowsand-doors

Just seven percent used an approved or accredited trader scheme to find someone for the job. And a striking 36 percent relied on informal personal recommendations rather than formal verification routes. The reality is that homeowners are searching in a market that has failed to make the right choice the easy choice. “Homeowners are doing their best to find someone they can trust,” explains Dave. “But when formal accreditation schemes are hard to find, difficult to verify, and poorly understood, it’s no surprise that people fall back on word of mouth. The industry has a responsibility to change that.” What the Citizens Advice report also makes clear is that accreditation does make a measurable difference – particularly when things don’t go to plan.

Among consumers who used a trader registered with an Alternative Dispute Resolution scheme, 86 percent said their issue was resolved. For those whose trader was not registered, that figure dropped to 67 percent. The presence of a formal framework including accountability, documentation, and a clear route to resolution changes outcomes in real and meaningful ways. This is precisely where FENSA installers stand apart. Every FENSA registered installer operates within a structured framework of compliance, certification, and accountability.

Installations are notifiable, meaning they are formally recorded as meeting building regulations. Homeowners also receive an insurance backed guarantee that protects them even in the event that the installer ceases to trade. And, critically, FENSA provides a clear, accessible route to support when homeowners need it. “FENSA exists to give both installers and homeowners the confidence that can only be found when working within a properly governed system,” continues Dave. “For installers, that means technical support, clear compliance guidance, and a recognised badge of professionalism that homeowners increasingly value. For homeowners, it means knowing that if something isn’t quite right, there is a team ready to guide you.” The Citizens Advice report calls for a single register for traders, mandatory licensing, and wider access to dispute resolution. These are significant policy recommendations – and ones that align closely with the direction FENSA is working towards. The infrastructure the report is calling for already exists within the glazing industry, the challenge now is making it more visible, more accessible, and better understood by the homeowners who need it most. “The message from the report is clear,” concludes Dave. “Voluntary, fragmented protection isn’t enough. Homeowners deserve better – and FENSA approved installers are already delivering it.” www.fensa.org.uk

Brouha reflects on changing challenges

across 20 years As Brouha Marketing, a leading comms agency in the fenestration sector, celebrates its 20th birthday, MD Fiona Lund looks at what has really changed in marketing over two decades (and what hasn’t).

Fiona explains more: “When I set up Brouha twenty years ago, marketing and PR were very different crafts. Apart from the inevitable need for Crisis PR, the pace was slower, more predictable, and often more forgiving. Campaigns were planned in quarters, not sprints. Data was sparse. Creativity carried the day, partly because it had to. But then the world was a very different place. “With the birth of Facebook, Twitter and the landing of YouTube, 2006 was a pivotal year defined by this new world of social media and big technological innovations that shape the world we live in today. Well, and I say this affectionately, sadly the Blackberry didn’t make the cut. “Twenty years ago, marketing revolved around campaigns. Big launches. Defined timelines. Clear starts and finishes. You “went live,” you measured results, you moved on.

“Two decades later, marketing has evolved into something faster, more measurable, more fragmented and arguably more powerful. We’ve moved from shorter term tactics to interrupt attention, to creating more sustainable strategies to earn and sustain attention. And the word ‘earn’ is critical with trust and ethics of brands vital. “Data is abundant and sometimes overwhelmingly so. Real-time behavioural analytics, granular audience segmentation, attribution models, predictive tools, AIdriven insights. As marketers our challenge is no longer access to data, but rather making sense of it. We need to distil signal from noise, translate insight into action, but above all, balance data with creativity. Because despite everything, data doesn’t replace judgment. It sharpens it. “We are entering a phase where content can be generated at scale, personalisation can happen

dynamically and insights can be surfaced instantly. AI isn’t just a tool. It’s an accelerant which comes with a big warning: it amplifies good and bad marketing. Strong strategy becomes more powerful; weak thinking is exposed more easily and faster. “For all the transformation, some marketing fundamentals remain exactly the same: • Psychology: at its heart, marketing is still about human behaviour, motivations, emotions and decisions. • Clarity of Message: complexity has increased, but clarity still cuts through. • Creative Impact: communications that resonate emotionally still outperform work that merely informs. • Trust: more than ever, trust is the foundation of brand value and the easiest thing to lose. “The pace has increased. The tools have evolved. The stakes have risen. “But the core challenge remains the same: to connect meaningfully with people and to do so in a way that matters. “That hasn’t changed in twenty years. And it won’t change in the next twenty either.” www.brouhamarketing.com

Reinforcing competence

as the new currency

in construction

With demonstrable competence now one of the most important issues in construction, CAB explains why training, documentation and shared technical knowledge are key to helping aluminium businesses navigate a changing regulatory landscape.

merely talking the talk is no longer enough. With accountability front and centre, the whole construction supply chain must be able to clearly demonstrate and document compliance, particularly where safety-critical and highperformance building products are concerned.

Over the past few years, competence has emerged as a defining construction requirement and in a post-Grenfell world,

“It is no longer enough for companies or individuals to simply say that they know what they are doing,” says Nigel Headford, CEO

50 WINDOW NEWS | SEPTEMBER 2026

Nigel Headford

VIEWPOINT at the Council for Aluminium in Building (CAB). “It requires more than just words. They must be able to actually prove that they have the relevant knowledge or experience; that they have the required processes in place, and that they clearly understand their responsibilities. That is what clients, regulators and building owners increasingly want to see.” As the changing regulatory landscape increases the importance of accurate product data, a clear audit trail, showing who was responsible for what and when, is essential. “Good information is becoming just as important as good products,” Nigel continues. “If any questions arise later in a building’s life, companies need confidence that the right information will be available to help them answer those questions.” Modern aluminium façade and fenestration systems are expected to meet a growing list of performance requirements. Fire safety remains a critical focus, but thermal performance, acoustics, weather resistance, security, accessibility and sustainability are also high priorities. As products become more sophisticated, the decisions made during design, manufacture and installation are often closely interconnected. Competence, responsibility and accountability are necessary at every stage, from specification and design through to manufacture, fabrication, installation, maintenance and replacement. “For specifiers, that could mean demonstrating a robust understanding of product performance and regulatory requirements,” explains Nigel. “While for systems companies, it is about providing clear technical information and support…”

With traceability an essential factor of compliance, regulations place increased importance on accurate information, clear product data, technical documentation and a proper record of responsibility throughout a project’s lifecycle. This makes training and knowledge sharing increasingly important, as Nigel explains: “The industry needs ongoing access to technical updates, best practice guidance and opportunities to share knowledge, as standards, regulations and client expectations continue to evolve,” he says. “Keeping up with all these changes requires time and investment and this is something we are very aware of at CAB. Acting as our members’ eyes, ears and voice to help them stay informed, connected and better prepared through guidance, technical information, training, events and industry representation is a big part of what we do.” At a time when aluminium is playing a growing role in energyefficient buildings, refurbishment projects and modern façade design, the result of CAB’s efforts is a more competent, betterinformed aluminium supply chain that is likely to deliver betterperforming buildings and stronger confidence in aluminium as a material. “Our members are dealing with increasing technical, regulatory and commercial pressures,” says Nigel. “Competence might look slightly different for the various types of businesses and organisations that populate the sector, but the end goal is the same. “Our aim is not to add another layer of burden, but to help companies stay informed, connected and better prepared. We can see that our work to achieve this is already paying off, both for our members and the wider construction sector.” www.c-a-b.org.uk

Trust still closes more sales than technology, says Leads 2 Trade Andy Royle, director and co-founder of Leads 2 Trade, explains why human conversations still win more genuine sales leads than technology alone will ever manage Twenty years in this industry has taught me one thing above all else, and that’s homeowners buy from people they trust, not from a form on a screen. That belief sits at the heart of everything we do at Leads 2 Trade, and it explains why, as we mark our 20th anniversary this year, our approach to lead generation still starts and ends with a real conversation. The industry has changed beyond recognition since we started. Online quote tools, chatbots and AI-driven enquiry forms now sit alongside traditional channels, and many homeowners are happy to begin their journey online. We’ve embraced that shift. Our

own campaigns increasingly use smarter, more responsive digital journeys to capture initial interest and guide consumers toward genuine intent before our team picks up the phone. But there’s a difference between using technology to support a process and using it to replace the judgement of an experienced call handler. When a homeowner tells us they’re thinking about buying next month rather than this one, that distinction matters. A trained operative picks up on price sensitivity and timeframes in ways no automated form ever will. That’s what double qualification means – a real person confirming genuine intent before a lead reaches an installer.

52 WINDOW NEWS | SEPTEMBER 2026

This is why every enquiry that comes through Leads 2 Trade is still spoken to by a member of our contact centre team. It’s a key part of what makes our leads so valuable to installers, particularly as we are booking fixed and firm appointments and surveys in for over 75% of our members which can only be done using human call centre operatives. We are using AI to cut down on wasted effort, particularly around chasing older enquiries that have gone quiet after repeated call attempts, so our team can spend more time with homeowners who are ready to talk. It’s a tool for efficiency, not a replacement for judgement. Installers pay for our leads for one reason; they know a person has spoken to that homeowner and confirmed real interest in the products or services they offer. That confidence, built over two decades, is not something a bot can replicate. As the market gets noisier with automated shortcuts, the installers who stay ahead will be the ones backed by leads built on a genuine conversation. leads2trade.co.uk

Alongside this, the Manual Handling in the Glass and Glazing Sector course focuses on the safe handling of glass products, workplace hazards and the correct use of specialist handling equipment.

through to final installation.”

John believes this knowledge has benefits that extend well beyond the classroom.

Commercial understanding is another area where ongoing development can make a significant difference. The Sales and Compliance course helps businesses understand how compliance knowledge can support customer conversations while strengthening understanding of consumer legislation, contracts, warranties and customer responsibilities.

“Creating a strong safety culture starts with understanding why procedures exist and how they protect both people and businesses. Training gives delegates the confidence to identify risks, make informed decisions and contribute positively to a safer working environment.”

learning happens through discussion,” John explains. “When people share experiences from different parts of the industry, everyone benefits. Delegates leave with practical knowledge that they can apply straight away, along with a broader understanding of the challenges and solutions being experienced across the sector.” Recognising the growing demand for practical, accessible training, GGF Training has expanded its programme of instructor-led courses, giving members greater choice through both in-person and remote learning. The expanded programme has been developed to support professionals at every stage of their career, whether they are looking to strengthen technical knowledge, improve health and safety awareness or gain a better understanding of current regulations.

Technical competence continues to be another key focus for the industry. Surveying, installation quality and specialist applications all play an important role in delivering successful projects and maintaining customer confidence. The GGF’s expanded programme includes courses covering the survey and installation of windows and doors in accordance with BS 8213, alongside specialist training on the installation of fire-resistant glazing. These programmes help delegates develop a stronger understanding of industry standards, installation techniques and the factors that contribute to quality workmanship. “Technical knowledge continues to evolve as products, standards and regulations develop,” John says. “Regular training helps businesses keep that knowledge current and supports greater consistency across every stage of a project, from the initial survey

Regulatory awareness has also become increasingly important. Keeping up to date with changing requirements helps businesses prepare for future developments while supporting compliance with existing legislation. GGF Training has introduced courses covering Regulation 14 and Building Regulations, helping delegates understand the requirements affecting windows, doors and glazing throughout the UK and Ireland.

“Competence touches every part of a business,” John adds. “Whether someone works in surveying, installation, sales or management, having the right knowledge helps them make better decisions and deliver a higher standard of service. Investing in training is ultimately an investment in the future of the business.” As the industry continues to respond to changing legislation, evolving standards and increasing customer expectations, professional development will remain central to building a skilled and confident workforce. By expanding its programme of instructor-led training, the GGF continues to provide members with practical learning opportunities that support competence, encourage knowledge sharing and help businesses prepare for the future. marketplace.ggf.org. uk/#/?type=trainer_assisted

he takes the helm at thinkivity Simon Monks has been appointed managing director of thinkivity, the technology company behind The Glazing Hub, as he makes the move from hardware to software to help build the next generation of digital tools for the sector. With a wealth of experience gained throughout a long career in glazing, Simon brings extensive industry knowledge, commercial experience and an understanding of the day-to-day realities facing businesses across the sector. Now, he plans to put that experience to work in a very different way.

Rather than focusing on the physical products that have formed much of his career, Simon will lead a technology business with ambitions to change the way glazing companies operate through software designed specifically around their needs, says the company. “I’ve spent years working with the hardware of our industry. You can’t always understand those from the outside. “I want us to get even closer to businesses throughout the industry, understand the frustrations they deal with every day and ask a simple question: how can technology make this better? “That might mean saving somebody hours every week, removing repetitive admin, improving communication or giving a business information it has never been able to access easily before. Those are the things that make technology genuinely valuable.” Simon takes over as managing director from thinkivity founder Continued on page 58

Simon Dorney appointment

supports next phase of growth at Dekko

Elton said: “Simon knows this industry inside out. He understands the businesses, the people and the challenges, and he brings a huge amount of experience and credibility to thinkivity. “The really exciting part is what happens when you combine that experience with our ability to innovate and build technology. “Simon taking the lead on the business also frees me to spend more time doing what I love – working on the products, exploring new ideas and finding better ways to solve problems for our customers.” Simon believes the glazing sector is approaching a period in which technology will play an increasingly important role in determining how efficiently businesses can operate and compete. And he wants thinkivity to be at the forefront of it. “We’re not interested in creating software and then trying to convince the glazing industry that it needs it,” Simon concluded. “We want to start with the industry, start with the problem and build the right solution around it. “I’ve spent a lot of my career in glazing, and I’m incredibly excited about taking everything I’ve learned during that time and applying it to technology. “The hardware will always be at the heart of this industry. But I believe the next big opportunity is in the software that connects everything together – and that’s exactly where I want to be.” thinkivity.co.uk

Why authentic

design is raising expectations for flush sash windows Homeowners are paying closer attention to the finer details of window design. While energy efficiency and security remain important, appearance is playing a bigger role than ever in buying decisions. As a result, installers are looking for products that combine authentic styling with modern performance. Flush sash windows have become increasingly popular because they suit both heritage properties and contemporary homes. Their clean lines and

traditional appearance appeal to homeowners who want timeless design, while modern manufacturing delivers the reliability and efficiency expected today. “The market has become much more design-led,” says Nathan Court, Chief Sales Officer at Sternfenster. “Homeowners still expect excellent thermal performance and security, but they’re also looking much more closely at the appearance of their windows. They want

products that complement the style of their home while giving them the benefits of modern manufacturing.” This growing focus on design has encouraged manufacturers to refine their products. Homeowners are looking beyond the overall shape of a window and paying attention to details such as jointing, hardware, colours and finishes. “Customers are doing more research before they buy,” Nathan explains. “They notice the small details, and those details can make a real difference when they’re choosing between products. Installers need windows that help them stand out.” To meet this demand, Sternfenster offers Timberline, a premium PVC-U flush sash system designed to capture the character of traditional timber windows. One of its standout features is

its square-welded internal and external joints. This creates a clean, authentic finish across both the sash and frame, giving the window a sharp, high-quality appearance. “The square weld is one of Timberline’s biggest strengths,” says Nathan. “It creates a finish that homeowners immediately notice. It gives the window extra character while maintaining the quality and consistency that modern manufacturing provides.” Timberline also offers homeowners plenty of choice. A wide range of heritage woodgrain foils, contemporary matt finishes and dual-colour options allows installers to match different property styles, while a selection of hardware completes the overall look. Performance has been given equal attention. Timberline achieves U-values as low as 1.2 W/m²K, helping homeowners improve energy

efficiency and reduce heat loss. PAS 24 options are also available, providing added reassurance for projects where enhanced security is required. For installers, consistency is just as important as appearance. Every Timberline window is manufactured using Sternfenster’s advanced production processes, helping ensure reliable quality from one project to the next. Installers also benefit from access to digital tools including EasyAdmin+ and EasySales, making it easier to produce quotations, configure products and manage projects.

believes authentic design will continue to influence homeowner buying decisions. “People are investing in their homes because they want to create spaces they’re proud of,” he says. “Windows play a huge part in that. Products that combine authentic design with modern performance will continue to be in demand because they deliver both style and practicality.” For installers, that creates an opportunity to offer homeowners something that goes beyond the basics.

“Installers need confidence in every order,” Nathan says. “They want products that are manufactured consistently, supported by dependable service and backed by digital tools that help them run their business more efficiently.”

“Timberline gives installers a genuine point of difference,” Nathan concludes. “It combines traditional character with modern performance, helping our customers win work in both heritage and contemporary projects. That’s exactly what today’s market is looking for.”

The fast turnaround service has been introduced to support installers and contractors facing increasingly demanding project schedules, helping to minimise delays without compromising on product quality or performance,

says the company. Suited to both residential and light commercial applications, the Smart Alitherm 400 window system is widely specified for refurbishment projects and new build developments. It combines strong thermal performance, security credentials and fabrication efficiencies, making it a reliable choice for modern construction projects, claims the company.

Emplas launches new flush window with

improved U-value of 0.9

Trade fabricator, Emplas, has launched an exclusive new flush window, with a ‘timberweld-option’ to follow later in 2026.

“Reliable lead times remain one of the most important factors for installers when planning projects. By offering a two-week lead time on our Smart Alitherm 400 windows in our most popular colours, we’re helping customers keep installations on track and respond more effectively to project demands. “Alongside fast turnaround times, customers continue to benefit from the high levels of quality, performance and service they expect from BDC Aluminium. Our focus is on making life easier for installers by delivering dependable products exactly when they’re needed.” www.bdcaluminium.co.uk

With double and triple-glazed configurations available in 28mm, 36mm and 40mm options, the new flush product offers an improved U-value of 0.9 when specified as a 40mm triple-glazed unit, says the company. Conforming to the Future Homes Standard, the flush window will help installers to meet growing consumer demand for clean, flush sightlines and a timberlike aesthetic, according to the company. “The new flush window is exclusively available from Emplas and will help installers access higher-value work, because it enables them to compete more effectively in premium, heritage and conservation markets, where margin is typically higher than on standard white casements,” said Martin Millard, head of trade sales, Emplas.

“Through our own retailfacing business, T&K Home Improvements, we have become aware that homeowners are asking for a better choice of flushfinish, thermally efficient window solutions,” added Martin. “Our new flush window gives customers a credible, scalable option that ticks those boxes, backed by the same manufacturing standards and service they already expect, and rely on, from Emplas.” Available in Emplas’ existing colour range and forthcoming timberweld option, this exclusive new product will be subject to the fabricator’s strict manufacturing strategy focused on product quality and process control, says the company. Part of a broader programme of product and capacity investment, including new tooling and additional machinery, the new flush window is the latest product innovation from Emplas to help installers win and deliver higher‑value work. emplas.co.uk

Epwin Window Systems has launched the latest generation of its popular Flush Casement Window, now available across its Profile 22 and Spectus window and door system brands. The enhanced design delivers improved thermal performance, expanded security compatibility and refined aesthetics, helping fabricators and installers meet evolving market demands while offering even greater value to homeowners, claims the company. Ray McGrady, commercial director at Epwin Window Systems, said: “Our new Flush Casement Window builds on everything that made the original such a success while introducing meaningful enhancements that make it even more futureready. From improved thermal performance and enhanced PAS 24 compatibility to refined styling, it’s a window system that enables our customers to stay ahead of changing regulations and

Security performance has also been enhanced. A strengthened sash design, greater hardware compatibility and PAS 24 approval across all glazing bead options mean the window achieves compliance across every glazing option and sash size as standard. The system is also suitable for Secured by Design applications. The system also delivers improved weather performance, making it suitable for more exposed locations, while increased maximum sash sizes for both top-hung and side-hung windows allow fabricators and installers to meet growing demand for larger glazed areas, says the company. The window continues to replicate the elegant proportions of traditional timber casements, featuring slim-depth sashes, authentic putty-line detailing and optional dummy sashes for perfectly balanced fixed-light configurations. Mechanically jointed sash and outer frame options remain available where period authenticity is essential, complemented by heritage hardware. Astragal B Force 8 has completed an intricate bespoke astragal bar design, highlighting its specialist manufacturing capabilities and technical expertise. The project, completed for a customer requiring a highly detailed heritage-style appearance, involved the handcrafting of an elaborate astragal bar layout. Unlike conventional decorative glazing systems where bars are encapsulated between the panes of a sealed unit, Force 8 manufactured the bars to be applied directly onto the surface of the glass, delivering a far more authentic and traditional finish, says the company. Every element of the design was individually crafted by one of Force 8’s experienced craftsmen, ensuring each curved section and

Bar Design joint aligned perfectly to create a seamless appearance. While decorative glazing has become increasingly popular in recent years, reproducing the character of traditional timber windows remains a challenge for many fabricators. Surfacemounted astragal bars create genuine depth and shadow lines that simply cannot be achieved with bars enclosed within the glazing unit, making them the preferred choice for period properties, heritage renovations and premium residential projects, according to the company. The expertise behind this latest installation has been developed over many years and stems directly from Force 8’s pioneering work on its Georgian fanlight system. During the development of that product, the company

designed its own manufacturing process for accurately positioning astragal bars onto the face of the glass while maintaining exceptional durability and longterm performance. The result is a glazing solution that combines the authentic appearance of traditional joinery with the thermal efficiency and low maintenance benefits of modern PVC-U windows, claims the company. Because every project is manufactured in-house, Force 8 can produce virtually any astragal bar configuration, including complex arches, Gothic designs, decorative fanlights and fully bespoke layouts that many fabricators simply cannot offer. This latest project demonstrates not only the skill of the company’s manufacturing team but also its willingness to take on technically demanding work that falls outside standard fabrication methods. Each design is carefully planned before being individually handcrafted to ensure the finished

product meets both the aesthetic expectations of the customer and the exacting standards required for installation. For installers, this provides the confidence of working with a manufacturer capable of delivering truly bespoke solutions without compromising on quality or attention to detail, says the company. As demand continues to grow for heritage-inspired products that combine traditional aesthetics with modern performance, Force 8 continues to invest in the specialist skills and manufacturing techniques needed to deliver projects that others often consider too complex. Whether producing bespoke arched frames, composite entrance doors or intricate surfacemounted astragal bar designs such as this, Force 8 continues to prove why it remains one of the UK’s leading specialists in technically challenging fenestration projects. www.force8.uk

The importance

of colour

As Hurst expands its premium sprayed colour offer across its S-Class solid core composite door range, installers are being given even more opportunity to meet growing homeowner demand for personalisation. The front door has become far more than a functional purchase. While security, performance and durability remain essential, homeowners are increasingly viewing their entrance door as a key design feature and an expression of personal style.

This shift has placed colour firmly at the centre of the decisionmaking process. For some homeowners, that means choosing a bold, confident shade that creates immediate kerb appeal. For others, it means selecting a softer, more muted finish that ties in with interior schemes, exterior finishes or wider architectural trends. In response, Hurst has expanded its S-Class solid core composite door range with the introduction of new premium sprayed finishes, widening the choice available to

For installers, this consistency is important. It means they can offer a broader and more joined-up colour proposition across different door types, helping them meet varied customer requirements without having to move between suppliers or compromise on choice. The expansion also supports a market where personalisation continues to drive purchasing decisions. Homeowners are more design-aware than ever, with platforms such as Instagram, Pinterest and interiors magazines influencing everything from kitchen cabinetry and wall colours to front door finishes. greens and terracotta shades to softer, design-led finishes that work across both traditional and contemporary properties. “Colour continues to play a major role in the decision-making process for homeowners, with customers increasingly looking for entrance doors that complement both the character of the property and current interior trends,” says Hayley Barker, head of marketing at Hurst. “Expanding our premium sprayed range allows us to offer greater choice across all of our product categories while introducing colours that reflect changing tastes and emerging design influences. “By investing in our own paint facilities, we’ve been able to respond more quickly to trends and provide a more consistent offering across the full Hurst

As a result, entrance doors are increasingly being selected to work with wider home improvement schemes. A front door might be chosen to complement heritage brickwork, tie in with window frames, contrast with render, or echo tones used inside the home. This is where premium sprayed finishes can help installers add value. By offering more than standard colour options, they can support customers who are looking for something more distinctive, while also creating opportunities to upsell into highervalue products. The S-Class range is already positioned at the premium end of Hurst’s composite door offer. Designed to sit above its established GRP composite door collection, it combines the feel of a traditional solid timber core with the low-maintenance benefits of a durable outer skin.

With a wide choice of door styles, glazing, hardware and now an expanded premium sprayed colour offer, S-Class gives installers a flexible way to meet demand for high-end, design-led entrance doors. The range has been developed to suit a variety of property types, from period-inspired homes and cottage-style entrances to more contemporary installations where clean lines, subtle tones and modern hardware are key. By adding new trending shades to the collection, Hurst is strengthening this design flexibility even further. The investment in in-house paint facilities has been central to that progress. It has enabled Hurst to expand its colour offer significantly, introduce new finishes more quickly and maintain greater consistency across its product ranges. This is particularly valuable in a market where trends move quickly, and homeowners increasingly expect suppliers to keep pace with the design influences they see in other areas of home improvement. For installers, the benefit is a more complete and competitive offer. They can provide customers with greater design choice, support more personalised projects and present colour as a key part of the front door conversation, rather than a final add-on. As demand for personalisation continues to grow, colour will remain one of the most powerful ways for homeowners to make an entrance door feel their own. With its expanded Premium Sprayed service and new S-Class finishes, Hurst is helping installers respond to that shift, giving them the products, flexibility and colour choice needed to support changing tastes and win more business. www.hurstdoors.co.uk

This ensures a “flawless” colour match across the complete entrance system, providing a premium factoryapplied finish that Force 8 says “simply cannot be achieved with separately sourced components”. The development of the deep copper finish has been the result of extensive research and testing by the Force 8 team. Achieving the perfect bond between the specialist paint coating and the composite door surface presented a significant technical challenge, but after months of refinement the company says it has produced a finish that combines exceptional durability with a truly eye-catching appearance. The result is a product that offers homeowners the sophisticated look of a bespoke steel entrance door, while retaining all the practical advantages of composite construction, including excellent thermal efficiency, outstanding security and low maintenance.

Force 8 has demonstrated its flair for innovation with the introduction of a stunning new deep copper finish for its range of smooth (no woodgrain) composite doors. The latest additions build on the momentum created since the launch of S-Class in September 2025, further strengthening Hurst’s premium solid core offer and giving installers even greater choice when specifying entrance doors for homeowners. The new Composite Apex is a ‘highly versatile’ style designed to suit both traditional properties and more contemporary homes. It is available in three options: Solid, Squarelite and Squarelite Georgian. Hurst has also introduced new glazing options to complement the

Apex style, helping installers create a balanced, design-led finish across a wide range of property types. The expansion follows the addition of S-Class stable doors, giving installers access to a traditional split-leaf option within the same solid core platform. Together, the new styles and configurations reflect growing homeowner demand for more personalised entrance doors, with style, colour, glazing and hardware all playing an increasingly important role in the buying process. “S-Class has been really well received since launch, particularly with installers looking to offer something more premium to their customers,” said Mark Atkinson, sales director at Hurst Doors. “What we’re doing now is building

Hurst believes this colour capability sets the range apart from other solid core door manufacturers, giving installers a significant point of difference when selling to design-conscious homeowners. “Colour continues to play a major role in the decision-making process for homeowners, with customers increasingly looking for entrance doors that complement both the character of the property and current interior trends,” said Hayley Barker, head of marketing at Hurst. “By investing in our own paint facilities, we’ve been able to respond more quickly to trends and provide a more consistent offering across the full Hurst range.” Each S-Class door is manufactured to order at Hurst’s facility and can be quoted, configured and ordered through Hurst Live. The latest additions form part of Hurst’s ongoing investment in product development, ensuring its customers have access to a competitive, future-ready entrance door range that aligns with changing market demands. www.hurstdoors.co.uk

Shut the

back door! Composite door supplier, DoorCo, reflects on the trends that the unprecedented summer weather is encouraging, reporting a rise in sales for stable doors, short doors and door upgrades for the less typical areas of the home.

Commercial Director, Ben Aspinall, explains more: “The recent run of heatwaves has sent a flurry of stable door enquiries that we have passed on to our customers, resulting in a significant jump in sales for our purpose-built product. Stable doors are the perfect way of increasing ventilation in a home, without compromising on security. Customers are loving the choices available in the range. There are both Original and Gripcore slab options, available in a wide range

of cottage style designs, exclusive glass options, a wide range of colours, and all finished with market leading Winkhaus stable door locking kits and Stormguard weather bars, which are painted to match the door colour for a seamless finish. “Stable Doors are an obvious choice for a back or side door, but do we make the most of the opportunity to upsell composite doors in other, less obvious areas

of the home? Back and side doors, pedestrian doors into garages, garden rooms, sheds, outbuildings and home offices all benefit from the added protection a composite door provides. Especially when you consider security. Security all round “According to the 2025 Burglary report, around a quarter of all home burglaries happen through the back door, and in damage reports, most cases (66%) homeowners reported damage to an external door. “With the advancement of door products and smart locks, upgrading a back, side, outbuilding and even a garage door should be a consideration for any homeowner. And the ideal opportunity to upsell – imagine getting a suite of doors (and windows) in just one home. DoorCo has the doors available in our One product range, whatever the entrance. Short doors for smaller apertures

FOCUS ON DOORS “Short Doors have recently been introduced to the BritDor collection. A re-engineered slab that brings strength, security, durability, and style to any nonstandard entrances. With 49 different designs with size options starting from minimum widths of 332mm and minimum heights of 1555mm, Short Doors are perfectly placed to add security to smaller entrances thanks to the choice of 3 Winkhaus STV Thunderbolt locking kits, plus doors can be prepped for any handle, hinge and letterplate, too.

Scaling up for modern homes with Eaton “Non-standard entrances could also be larger, especially in new homes that are built to be more accessible. Eaton, from our Original foam-core range, measures an impressive 950mm x 2100mm and combines traditional panel looks with modern proportions and performance. There are eight unique designs in the collection, with Tatton being an excellent choice for a back door, letting light flood into the home through its large glazed top panel. “Tatton is a great option to Lytham for a larger entrance. Lytham has always been a popular choice for standard entrances and has been widely used in back doors across the UK for years. And upgrading the slab to Gripcore, where every door is painted to order, allows those more adventurous homeowners to bright up their gardens or tie in key features. “Whatever the opportunity, security should be a priority from front to back, and DoorCo has a door to fit any entrance in our One product range – accessible to every one of our customers. “If you are already a DoorCo customer, talk to your sales manager about how easy it is to start offering new products for sale, or if you are new to DoorCo, visit: https://trade.door-co.com/

ODL Europe has further expanded its composite door range with the introduction of a new stable door, giving fabricators and installers access to one of the market’s most recognisable door styles, says the company. Available in the Cottage door slab range, the new offering includes five designs: Solid, Stanley, Canning, Sandon and Benton. Bryan Bultema, managing director at ODL Europe, said: “Stable doors continue to be a popular choice with homeowners because they combine character, practicality and versatility. By adding this option to our Cottage door range, we’re giving our customers another opportunity to meet market demand and offer homeowners even greater choice.”

The stable door slabs are stocked in white and can be supplied painted in any RAL colour through ODL Europe’s in-house paint facility. The dedicated paint plant gives complete control over quality, consistency and colour accuracy, while allowing customers to offer a truly bespoke solution. The facility uses a hard-wearing polyurethane paint system and every painted door benefits from a 10-year guarantee against fade, loss of gloss and adhesion. The slab has been purpose-designed with a robust 100mm integrated PVC mid-rail, delivering the structural integrity required for stable door applications without compromising on aesthetics, claims the company. Bryan said: “As you would expect from an ODL Europe product, the stable door has been designed to deliver the same levels of quality and reliability our customers expect from us. By combining the proven ODL Capstone construction with an integrated PVC mid-rail, we’ve created a solution that brings together traditional appeal and modern performance.” Bryan concludes: “We’re continually looking at ways to expand our product offering and support our customers with solutions that reflect current market demand. The addition of the stable door is another example of that commitment.” www.odleurope.com

Safety built in With fire doors under increasing scrutiny, Emplas is applying the same data-driven, process-led approach used across its factory to one of the industry’s most safety-critical products.

Emplas’ launch of its fully accredited 30-minute Fire Doorset is doing more than opening new opportunities in specification and refurbishment markets. It is reshaping how the business approaches design, manufacture and control across its operation, according to the company.

Tested to BS EN 1634-1, EN 1634-3 and PAS 24:2022, and independently assessed by Warrington Fire as part of BM Trada Q-Mark certification, the doorset achieved up to 58 minutes fire integrity with no failings recorded, exceeding the 30-minute requirement.

74 WINDOW NEWS | SEPTEMBER 2026

Delivered in partnership with Winkhaus and DoorCo, the new Fire Stop Doors range opens up significant opportunities in specification and social refurbishment markets. Manufactured by Emplas, the doorset combines the DoorCo 30-minute Firecore slab, Winkhaus FireFrame door profile and Winkhaus AV2 autolocking system, delivered as a fully systemised solution. For Emplas, that system approach is critical. Fire doors are not treated as standalone products, but as integrated assemblies where every component and process must align with a defined field of application and third-party approval. “There’s no flexibility to substitute components or deviate from the specification,” explains Bruce Rowell, head of SHEQ and technical, Emplas. “Everything has to be tested, audited and signed off as part of the system.” That philosophy is driving change

FOCUS ON DOORS

on the shop floor. To support the fire doors, Emplas has introduced controls designed to eliminate risk at source. A key focus is on intumescent materials, which are essential to fire and smoke performance. If incorrectly fitted or omitted, the door will fail regardless of test data. To mitigate this, Emplas has introduced camera-based verification systems that confirm the presence and positioning of key components during manufacture. If a check fails, the product cannot move forward or be booked for dispatch. The company has also invested in a dedicated fire door production line, recognising the additional weight and complexity of fire-rated products. Emplas has aligned its Fire Stop Doors range with the Building Safety Act and the industry’s “Golden Thread” of information.

Each door is fully traceable, including component batch data, manufacturing processes and quality checks, supported by digital auditing. “We’ve developed a digital auditing system which supports compliance right the way through from manufacture to installation and maintenance,” continues Bruce. “That supports us, our customers and ultimately housing providers and developers to evidence compliance, meeting the requirements set out in the Building Safety Act, and critically, the ‘Golden Thread’.” Emplas is clear that manufacturing quality alone is not enough. Installation must align with the tested system if performance is to be maintained. Every fire door is supplied with independently tested installation and maintenance manuals,

alongside digital guidance accessed via QR code. The company has also invested in BM Trada fire door survey, installation and maintenance training, ensuring its teams understand site requirements. “Under law, there is no legal requirement to be trained to install fire doors,” Bruce adds. “However, if it goes wrong, you have to be able to prove competence.” By combining system-led design, third-party certification, process control and installation support, Emplas is moving beyond compliance, says the company. With around 5 million fire doors installed across the UK and more than 80,000 replaced each year, the opportunity is significant, but one that demands control, transparency and accountability at every stage. emplas.co.uk

Fuhr launches SmartAccess multiscan biometric access solution Fuhr has expanded its smart access control range with the launch of SmartAccess multiscan, a compact biometric fingerprint scanner designed to unlock Fuhr motorised multipoint locking systems securely and conveniently, according to the company. Developed for aluminium, timber

and PVC-U doors, SmartAccess multiscan allows users to unlock their door using their fingerprint, turning the finger into a personal key that cannot be lost, forgotten or shared. The unit can be surfacemounted or flush-mounted into the door leaf, or integrated into a pull handle, giving architects and specifiers flexibility across a wide

range of entrance door designs. SmartAccess multiscan is managed via the Fuhr SmartAccess app and communicates via Bluetooth 5 with the SmartAccess Module (SAM), which is fitted inside the door. The system requires no Wi-Fi, internet connection, mobile data or cloud service, providing a closed security loop with encrypted communication between the scanner and the SAM module, says the company. All biometric data is stored locally and encrypted within the door itself. No external party can access the data, including

PRODUCT NEWS Fuhr. The fingerprint scanner is also permanently paired with the SmartAccess Module SAM, preventing manipulation through device swapping or unauthorised replacement, says the company. Security is further strengthened through liveness detection, which verifies that the fingerprint presented is from a living finger and helps prevent tampering attempts using artificial copies. With a false acceptance rate of 1 in 10,000,000, the likelihood of unauthorised access is comparable to winning the lottery jackpot. By comparison, the false acceptance rate of a four-digit PIN code is 1 in 10,000, claims the company. The system uses tested European sensor technology from ekey and can store up to 100 fingerprints. It also adapts to gradual changes in fingerprints, including growing children’s fingers or minor fingertip injuries, helping maintain reliable day-to-day use in residential and light commercial settings, according to the company. The discreet module is small in size and features a multicoloured LED ring to indicate status. Covers are available in brushed stainless steel or matt black, with an IP56 protection rating when fitted with the cover. The system operates on 12–24V DC, with an integrated power buffer and no battery changes required, says the company. Paul Balfe, business development manager at Fuhr UK, commented: “SmartAccess multiscan brings biometric access into the door in a way that is secure, discreet and practical. For specifiers, the key point is that this is not a bolt-on smart device. It works with FUHR’s motorised multipoint locking systems and SmartAccess module, so the access control and locking system are designed to operate together.” fuhr.de/en/products/smart-accesssolutions/smartaccess-multiscan

success, says Mila Eurospec Multipoint Door Lock has been developed to provide fabricators and installers with a dependable locking solution that offers both compliance and affordability. With the backing of Assa Abloy, customers can also have absolute confidence in the quality and reliable supply of the product.”

Mila’s Eurospec Multipoint Door Lock is enjoying growing success following its launch last year, with a positive customer response leading to increasing adoption by fabricators and installers looking for a reliable, value-for-money solution, says the company. Precisely engineered for single residential doors constructed from PVCu and aluminium, the Eurospec Multipoint Door Lock provides a dependable and cost-effective multipoint locking solution for residential projects, according to the company.

The Eurospec Multipoint Door Lock features security hooks positioned within 100mm of the pre-compression rollers to deliver strength at locking points, enhancing resistance to forced entry. Why Ultion

developed ALPS Plus

When Ultion ALPS launched, it was the first cylinder to pass the updated PAS24:2022+A1:2024 standard and the Sold Secure Diamond 2024 test. At the time, no other cylinder on the market could say the same, claims the company. The industry has moved on since then. Other manufacturers have caught up with the standard, which is exactly what should happen. Higher compliance across the board is good for everyone, including homeowners. But at Ultion, meeting a standard has never been the finish line. The compliance deadline is approaching and any cylinder supplied into PAS24 applications must meet the updated standard. The same applies to Sold Secure SS312, which has been updated to include the same four additional attack methods, according to the company. What’s less well understood is that beyond the written standard, the way products are actually tested has also evolved. Accredited test houses

in the UK are now applying more sophisticated techniques within the existing test parameters. A cylinder can pass the standard and still not hold up to the methods being used in practice. Scott Brittain, head of technical at Ultion, explains: “The standard itself hasn’t changed, but the way products are being tested has evolved. We’ve developed ALPS Plus specifically to withstand the techniques now being used by accredited test houses, not just to meet the minimum required on paper.” The company states, ALPS Plus is Ultion’s most secure cylinder, built on the foundation of ALPS but enhanced to keep pace with how testing and real-world attack methods are developing. It is fully PAS24:2022+A1:2024 compliant, meets the updated Sold Secure SS312 2024 standard and comes with KeyControl as standard to block unauthorised key copies. It is available in keyed alike sets so one key can open every Ultion lock on a property and features a thick dimple key for added resistance to snapping. www.brisant-secure.com/login

Screw loose? Emplas has introduced a new screw-counting system across its sash and frame lines, alongside camera-based verification on its fire door production line, as it continues to engineer out errors on the shop floor. “Can anyone guess how many ways there are to mess

up a window in a factory environment? It’s 2,000 ways we have discovered so far, and we discover a new one every week in the factory,” said Nigel Scott, senior operations manager, Emplas. To tackle that, Emplas has deployed an intelligent screwdriving system which counts

84 WINDOW NEWS | SEPTEMBER 2026

every fixing as it is installed, while also monitoring torque to ensure each screw is correctly seated. “We have a really fancy, expensive screwdriver, if you like, and there are a number of them. It counts the number of screws that go into a sash or into a frame. If that hasn’t counted the right number of screws, it doesn’t allow that window to be scanned forward.” Integrated into the company’s unique Operating System, the technology links each stage of manufacture to individual operators and defined quality checks. If something isn’t right, the product simply doesn’t move. The Emplas Operating System adds an additional layer of safety assurance, ensuring that critical components such as hinges are fixed correctly and consistent,

PRODUCT NEWS says the company. Nigel is clear that the aim is not to catch people out, but to stop problems reaching site. “I don’t believe anyone comes to work to do a bad job. Unless they are told that they’ve done something wrong, they keep making that mistake, and invariably that mistake will end up with you guys. We want to prevent that from happening.”

Hörmann Truedor Installer Finder provides new sales opportunities for installers

The same thinking is being applied to Emplas’ Fire Doorset, where the consequences of a missed step are significantly higher. “Intumescent strips go around the locks and sit in the letterboxes. If you miss it, it will fail. If you miss it, the fire or smoke will come through, and it will fail to do its primary job.” To control that risk, Emplas has installed a dedicated fire door line with camera-based verification. “Once we put all the intumescent around the product, it will pick up whether it’s present or not. If it stays green, everything’s okay. If it’s red, you cannot move on to the next process. It won’t allow you to scan that product and dispatch it.” The Fire Doorset has also undergone independent furnace testing at temperatures of around 960°C, significantly exceeding its FD30 requirement. “By following the system and really building quality in, we went up to a 30-minute fire door. We achieved 58 minutes, and they stopped the test because the guys conducting it ran out of oxygen. “It really came across for me that we weren’t just making a door anymore. This is a really safe product.” emplas.co.uk

Weatherglaze Windows has reinforced its position as one of Ireland’s leading PVC-U trade fabricators with a major investment in three state-ofthe-art Graf Synergy seamless welding machines from Haffner. The investment includes the new Graf Synergy Seamless SL8FF TR CNC 8-Head Welding Machine and two Graf Synergy SL4-FF EVO Seamless Welders. According to the company the investment marks two significant industry milestones. Weatherglaze becomes the first company in the UK and Ireland to take delivery of the new Graf Synergy SL8-FF TR CNC 8-head welder and the first fabricator in Ireland to install Graf Synergy seamless welding technology. Based in Gorey, County Wexford, Weatherglaze has been manufacturing PVC-U windows and doors for more than 45 years. The company has built its reputation on continually investing in advanced fabrication technology to deliver premium products and exceptional service to its trade customers, claims the company. Manufacturing aluplast’s IDEAL 70, flush sash neo plus HST85 Lift and slide, neo smart-slide and aero-slide patio systems, Weatherglaze is well placed to take full advantage of Graf Synergy’s seamless welding

MACHINERY technology. The seamless corner welds complement the clean, contemporary appearance of the systems, while enhancing the overall finish. The technology is particularly suited to aluplast’s premium finish foils of woodec and aludec, designed to replicate the appearance of timber and aluminium respectively, these premium finishes rely on exceptional corner detailing to maintain their authentic appearance. Jim Dempsey, chairman at Weatherglaze, said: “We continually look for ways to improve both the quality of our products and the efficiency of our fabrication, so investing in Graf Synergy’s seamless welding technology was an easy decision. The quality of the finished welds is superb. Unlike traditional fabrication methods, where welded corners need to be penned to disguise the weld seam, Graf Synergy technology produces a perfectly seamless corner straight from the machine. Not only does this save significant fabrication time, it also delivers a superior finish that will look just as good years after installation because there is no penning to fade. Combined with the premium appearance of the aluplast systems and decorative foils, it enables us to offer an even higher quality product to our customers.” Chris Curran, area sales manager at Haffner, commented: “We’re delighted Weatherglaze has invested in Graf Synergy technology from Haffner. By embracing the latest generation of seamless welding technology, they’re strengthening an already impressive fabrication operation and giving their customers access to the highest standards of PVC-U window quality and aesthetics.” The investment combines two of

Graf Synergy’s most advanced seamless welding machines with aluplast’s German engineering PVC-U systems to deliver outstanding manufacturing quality and premium aesthetics. The SL8-FF TR is the world’s first eight-head CNC welding machine, capable of simultaneously welding all four frame corners together with two transoms in a single operation, delivering exceptional production efficiency alongside perfectly seamless welded corners, says the company. Supporting it are two SL4-FF EVO seamless welders featuring Graf Synergy’s patented V-Perfect technology. The machines eliminate the need for corner cleaning and cosmetic finishing, producing consistently high-quality seamless welds that perfectly complement aluplast’s aludec, woodec and standard foil options available across all of the aluplast window and door systems, according to the company. Continuing its programme of investment, Weatherglaze has also become the first fabricator in Ireland to introduce aluplas’s cutting-edge energeto neo system to its product range. Combining this next-generation PVC-U system with Graf Synergy’s seamless welding technology creates a classleading, high-performance window solution, giving Weatherglaze a unique and compelling offering in the Irish market, claims the company. According to the company, as the exclusive supplier of Graf Synergy machinery in the UK and Ireland, Haffner continues to bring the latest fabrication technology to forward-thinking fabricators, enabling them to enhance productivity while delivering exceptional finished products. www.haffnerltd.com

SlimLine 68 specified for

estuary boathouse project SlimLine 68 (SL 68), a highperformance aluminium window system from Reynaers Aluminium, has been specified for the newly completed Riversmeet Boathouse in Topsham, Exeter. Installed by Reynaers at Home Partner Aspect Windows, this premium aluminium window system was selected to meet the demanding environmental conditions of this exposed riverside location while supporting the architectural vision for

expansive glazing, minimal sightlines and a strong connection between the home and its surroundings. on the site of a former boat pavilion, the Riversmeet Boathouse is a new-build private residence set within the grounds of the Grade II-listed Riversmeet House. Located at the meeting point of the River Exe and River Clyst, the property was designed

to maximise its exceptional waterside setting, capturing panoramic views across the estuary and adjacent RSPB nature reserve while flooding the interior with natural light. A key requirement for the project was to create a comfortable and energy-efficient living environment while withstanding the challenges of its tidal location, including exposure to strong winds and wind-driven rainfall. With slim aluminium profiles and minimal sightlines, SL 68 helps reduce the visual separation between inside and outside, allowing the surrounding landscape to become an integral part of the living space. The system combines advanced aluminium engineering with expert installation from Aspect Windows to deliver a premium finish while

ensuring the performance benefits of SL 68 are fully realised, says the company. Ryan Darby, marketing manager at Aspect Windows, said: “As a newbuild property of contemporary design, we needed a window system that could deliver a full technical specification for a waterside location while providing a stylish solution that maximises daylight. “With slimline aluminium frames allowing for larger panes of glass, SL 68 proved an ideal match to the look and feel of the property while helping to make the outdoor areas the focal point of the rooms.” Alongside delivering the minimal sightlines required for the project, SL 68 supports high levels of comfort through excellent acoustic, thermal and

weatherproof performance, according to the company. The system has been designed to deliver climate resistance and excellent insulation properties, and is rated Class 4 for air tightness, tested at a pressure of 600 Pascals (Pa). This helps to reduce draughts and energy loss, even in locations exposed to high winds. The high-performance window has also been tested to resist water penetration at a pressure of 1200Pa, crucial for exposed locations that can be subject to wind-driven downpours. It has achieved a Class C5 wind load resistance rating, maintaining structural integrity under extreme wind speeds up to 2000Pa, and meets PAS 24 certification for enhanced home security, claims the company. Specified with a pre-anodised

finish, the protective coating helps maintain the long-term integrity of the system, offering improved UV resistance, colour retention and protection against environmental factors, says the company. Scott Yates, commercial sales manager (South & South East) at Reynaers Aluminium UK, said: “Riversmeet Boathouse is a fantastic example of how selecting the right window system can really maximise the natural features that elevate a property, creating a stronger connection between the outdoors and the indoors. “Working with our Reynaers at Home Partner, Aspect Windows, this project has delivered high levels of weather resistance, security and insulation while meeting the architectural intent of making full use of the estuary views.”

On Thursday 28th May, The Residence Collection, a premium window and door designer, was spotted on an episode of George Clarke’s Beautiful Builds on Channel 4 showcasing a stunning residential property. In collaboration with designer Molecule Design and fabricator Window Tech Trade, this property was transformed using the Residence 7 window and door system. The renovation saw the property transformed with a total of 16 Residence 7 windows and one Residence 7 entrance door. The front elevation features Residence 7 bay and casement windows in the colour Painswick on the exterior and Chalk White on the interior. This was completed with Georgian bars, decorative glazing beads, trickle vent covers and cills. At the back of the property, Residence 7 casement windows

were installed in No.10 Black on the exterior and Chalk White on the interior to maintain the same flush detailing. The installation also included a Residence 7 open-in entrance door that was half glazed, half panel in the colour Painswick. For this renovation, all products were manufactured with Timberweld technology and fitted with double glazing, combining authentic timber-style aesthetics with the performance and lowmaintenance benefits of modern PVC-U, says the company. Specialist Glass

Products supplies glass panels for the UK’s largest penguin enclosure Specialist Glass Products (SGP), a leading bespoke glass manufacturer based in Huddersfield, supplied 12 toughened laminated glass panels for Yorkshire Wildlife Park’s biggest investment since COVID, costing £1.2 million, says the company. The project arose when Yorkshire Wildlife Park had the opportunity to house critically endangered African penguins and wanted to create one of the world’s largest

penguin enclosures. The strength, clarity and performance of the glass were key considerations throughout. The glass needed to support a large, deep body of water under high pressure, and therefore required specialised manufactured glass. Because it is a viewing area, glass clarity was a major requirement. SGP’s manufacturing processes ensure extremely clear,

uninterrupted glass with a crystalclear interlayer, which adds to the glass’s clarity, according to the company. Cheryl Williams, director at Yorkshire Wildlife Park, comments: “People were completely amazed when they walked through the gates, and you are hit with this wall of blue. It’s such a wow factor for visitors when they come straight through the gate, and the first thing they see is these 33 meters of glass”. The initial enquiry was for 12 large panels of 48mm thick triple-laminated glass, but as the project developed, the design changed due to an increase in water pressure. Upon review, the originally specified PVB interlayers were removed and replaced with SentryGlas, a structured rigid interlayer that gives the glass additional strength and enables it to meet the loading requirements,

says the company. The project’s timing was essential to ensure the enclosure was completed in time for peak summer season. SGP put in additional shifts at the factory and accelerated the project, managing to deliver all glass on time for the penguins’ arrival. The glass performed as expected and was delivered without issues, according to the company. The original program to manufacture the 12 panels was three to four weeks, but as the project neared completion and the program had to be accelerated, SGP turned around all 12 panels in just over a week.

Wayne Lewis, sales manager, at SGP says: “When approached with the project, we of course said yes; this is the type of project that Specialist Glass Products excels in, the type of project that we love and that a lot of our competitors will shy away from”. The glass was purchased in a jumbo sheet size of 6m by 3210m. SGP then cut the glass to size and polished the edges. The project requirements also included radius corners, which were done using their CNC machine. The glass was then put through the toughening process, where it was laid flat, heated to 630C, and cooked rapidly, creating surface tension that provides additional strength.

Finally, it was laminated with the Sentryglas interlayer, again using a heat-and-pressure process, before the glass bonded itself to the three layers to create a finished product. A secondary heat-soak test was also carried out to prevent spontaneous breakage from impurities naturally present in the glass when toughened. The final product delivered has resulted in the largest penguin enclosures in the UK, with extremely positive feedback from the public, says the company. The opening event hosted 700 gold members attending on the launch day. www.specialistglass.co.uk

They have also committed to working with us on an ongoing programme of product development to ensure that not only does the industry have the qualifications it needs to meet its needs right now, but also to ensure that there will always be new products in the pipeline designed to meet its future needs”. Speaking for NOCN Group, Laura Randall, head of business development said, “as one of the biggest construction Awarding Organisations in the UK with over 500 construction qualifications, it makes complete sense for us to also offer the fullest range of qualifications for the Fenestration, Glass and Glazing industry, a sector whose products are integral to all build projects”.

TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT Continuous improvement manager Mark Sigsworth represented Schlegel throughout the programme and said: “This has been a great exercise for us as a company, some of the skills that the students have gained coming from a S.T.E.M school has been passed onto some of our engineers.

BBC shines spotlight on Schlegel-backed programme

inspiring future engineers Schlegel, a Quanex company and manufacturer of sealing systems for windows and doors, has been featured on BBC’s Look North for its continued support for UTC South Durham’s Industry Projects programme. The initiative, run by the technical college and sixth form in Newton Aycliffe, gives STEM students the opportunity to work on real challenges set by regional employers while helping them develop the practical and transferable skills employers need.

Mathew said: “This has been really beneficial as I’ve learned that I enjoy the hands-on work experience and now understand this is what I want to do in my engineering apprenticeship,” while Liam said: “I have enjoyed this introduction to engineering at Quanex and doing design and prototyping work, and this is where I would like to focus my career.”

This year, Schlegel provided a live project brief for a team of students based on a real manufacturing issue from within its operations. The team spent 12 weeks researching the issue, developing a proposed solution and presenting their findings at the programme’s finale event. For students Mathew Causer and Liam Pattison the programme has given them a focus for their future careers.

Mathew Causer (left) and Liam Pattison (right)

“The students first few weeks in the world of manufacturing and engineering has given them an insight into working life, how to conduct themselves in meetings and an understanding of our expectations. “The next few months will be particularly good for the students as they have now been given real life improvement projects with timelines, gateway reviews and a full end of project presentation to the senior staff and the collage.” For Schlegel, the benefits of the programme are already proven. Previous students developed a solution aimed at reducing downtime at the company’s Newton Aycliffe manufacturing facility. The proposal was subsequently implemented and is now being explored for patent protection and wider rollout, says the company. “The quality of ideas that come from these projects is always impressive and we have already seen a student-led solution deliver tangible benefits within our own operation, which demonstrates the value of bringing education and industry closer together,” added Mark. “As a manufacturer with deep roots in the North East, we want to find and support the next generation of engineers. Programmes like this help build a strong local skills pipeline around the local area while giving students meaningful experience that can shape their future careers.” www.schlegel.com
