drive it forward. This is the declared aim of Lubomir Bohac, who took over the position of CEO of VBH Holding on 1st April 2025, having previously been regional head of the Central-Eastern Europe region and managing director of the VBH subsidiary in the Czech Republic. While all VBH international subsidiaries have been performing well, often in challenging conditions, the German construction industry market has remained particularly sluggish. In this difficult environment, VBH Holding’s German sales subsidiary, VBH Deutschland GmbH, has been struggling for some time with falling sales and rising costs. Despite intensive efforts, the company has been unable to operate profitably. As a rapid improvement is not in sight, the German subsidiary is now reorganising itself as part of insolvency proceedings under selfadministration. “The self-administration proceedings only affect our activities in Germany. All of our international subsidiaries, including VBH (GB), have been sustainably profitable and growing for years. We are confident that we will also be able to make VBH Deutschland GmbH profitable again by reorganising and concentrating on the profitable business areas,” explains Mr Bohac.
The VBH Group (VBH Holding GmbH) has recently issued the following statement in the German trade press. VBH Holding Continues on Course for International Success VBH Holding GmbH continued to show positive business development in 2024. This is due to the company’s strategy of focusing on international markets. 4 WINDOW NEWS | MAY 2025

Endurance businesses align under new group banner
Endurance Doors, the manufacturer of composite doors and its sister business, Endurance Aluminium, which fabricates a range of aluminium fenestration products, are aligning under a new banner.
Both businesses will continue to trade as normal under their existing brand names but will now also form part of a wider entity called the Endurance group. The adoption of the new umbrella mantle follows the successful launch earlier this year of Endurance Aluminium. It also serves as a precursor for further evolution and diversification, according to the company. The new Endurance group has its own vision and mission statement, as well as a new and dedicated logo. Scott Foster, sales and marketing director at the Endurance group, comments: “The launch of
Endurance Aluminium is just the start of a new phase in the success and development of the Endurance brand family”
“We are committed to expanding our product portfolio and to exploring new markets. This reflects our ethos of ‘Together, we grow’ which entails the creation of new growth opportunities both for us and our installer partners.” He continues: “Longer term, our vision is to shape a business that can supply premium quality products for every aspect of a property’s facade and where there is effectively an ‘Endurance for every home’. “Adopting the new group title, the Endurance group is better suited to this ultimate goal and also enables us to build on the considerable brand equity that we have developed for the Endurance name.” www.endurancedoors.co.uk
Affordable Windows Group (AWG), parent company of popular heritage uPVC range Timberlook, has reported an exceptional first quarter of 2025, marked by significant infrastructure investments, expansion of delivery vehicles and an upcoming appearance at FIT Show 2025. Affordable’s commitment to meeting the growing demand for its flush uPVC window systems has been demonstrated through the investment of a third Supercut saw, bringing the total investment in sawing machinery to approximately half a million pounds over the past 12 months. This expansion in manufacturing capacity follows the addition of three new AWG delivery vehicles, bringing the total fleet to 52 vans in total. These expansions have been made possible by a remarkably successful start to the year for Affordable. Amelia Gaughan, head of marketing for Affordable Windows Group, commented: “We are thrilled to have seen such a strong start to 2025 at Affordable. TRADE NEWS is aiming for homes in England and Wales to have an EPC rating of no lower than C. A property with an EPC rating of C will typically feature good insulation (loft, cavity walls, and floors), energy-efficient heating systems (modern gas boilers or heat pumps), and double or triple glazing to reduce heat loss. It might also include energyefficient lighting, renewable energy systems, modern appliances and draught proofing.
One every minute: the rate homes in England
need energy-related upgrades to meet 2050 Net Zero target A new analysis of the energy efficiency performance of residential properties in England has found that if the UK government is to hit its Net Zero target, nearly one home needs energy performance-related upgrades every minute up to 2050. To examine the scale of inefficient housing stock in England, home improvement specialists Eurocell, analysed national Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) data, to understand the full extent of the task at hand in upgrading ageing housing to a minimum rating of C in line with government Net Zero targets. 6 WINDOW NEWS | MAY 2025
According to the EPC data (data as of December 2024), there are currently estimated to be around 12,778,637 homes in England that have a rating of D or below that are likely to be eligible for upgrades that bring them in line with a C rating. It works out as almost one home every minute that requires energy performancerelated upgrades – or 57 homes an hour.
Commenting on the research, Beth Boulton, marketing director at Eurocell, said: “It’s no secret that England has an ageing housing stock across the entirety of the market, and it needs modernising to today’s energy efficiency standards. But what our analysis of EPC data really shows is the full scale of the challenge ahead for the home improvement and construction industries to support the government’s targets in meeting Net Zero by 2050.” The government has also set out specific targets for the private rental sector as part of its bid to reduce household energy costs. As of 2030, all private landlords will be required to meet a higher standard of Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) C or equivalent in their properties – up from the current level of EPC E. This includes social housing. According to the latest data, there are 4.6M private renters in England and just over 4M in socially rented housing too.
Why an EPC rating of C?
Birmingham, Leeds and Bradford have the most properties that need upgrading to a C EPC rating of any city and town from the data analysed
The government has set a legally binding target to reduce the UK’s net emissions by 100% by 2050 compared with 1990 levels. This is known as the ‘net zero target’. As part of that target, the government

• West Midlands mayor Richard Parker has launched a £167m energy efficiency fund to upgrade up to 10,000 homes – The funding will be used to upgrade the “oldest and coldest” social and privately owned homes in the region, the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) said. • Greater Manchester has developed a comprehensive energy plan across its 10 boroughs to achieve net zero by 2038, focusing on retrofitting existing homes to improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions. • Hammersmith & Fulham Council’s Retrofit Program is aiming to retrofit its council homes to enhance energy efficiency. But these initiatives and the many other examples out there, combined, only scratch the surface. Barriers to improvements remain emphasising the importance

Beth believes the home improvement industry, government, local authorities and market suppliers will need to come together to overcome the challenge ahead; “As the data shows, we need a major collaborative effort to bring homes in England up to modern energy efficiency standards. Time will quickly tick away and with it, the challenge will only get harder to bring UK housing stock in line with 2050 Net Zero targets.” Over 56% of the total properties in England have below-average energy efficiency (D or below), presenting a major opportunity for the window and door industry to identify where to target retrofit projects and how
they can optimise marketing to homeowners – Eurocell’s full research can be found here. Methodology Eurocell analysed data from the Department of Levelling Up, Housing and Communities in March 2025 – which contains EPC data for every household in England and Wales as of December 2024. Eurocell broke this data down by the total number of properties per rating in England, of D or below – which totalled 14,198,486 properties. This figure was then adjusted down by 10 per cent to account for an estimated number of properties that aren’t eligible to be upgraded to an EPC rating of C minimum – giving a total of 12,778,637. This figure was divided and broken down to provide a daily total of 1,358 and an hourly total of 57 (figures rounded) properties that require energy-related upgrades. https://www.eurocell.co.uk/ WINDOW NEWS | MAY 2025 7

planning, turnaround times, and customer service, claims the company. According to the company, this major digital upgrade follows a series of strategic improvements at Glyngary, including a comprehensive rebrand, new website, enhanced marketing materials, and expanded team – all aimed at making it easier for partners to sell the company’s handcrafted timber windows and doors. “This is a key part of our wider growth strategy,” said Joe Trueman, director at Glyngary Joinery. “We’ve chosen and tailored this software with our customers in mind. Our partners need accurate, timely quotes and simple tools to help them win business. This new system delivers on both fronts.
“The premium sector – where timber products thrive – is resilient and growing. While the middle market can be unpredictable, we believe targeting the high end offers greater stability. Timber is back in demand thanks to its sustainability and energy efficiency benefits. But many installers still stick to uPVC and aluminium, often because they think timber is too complex. Our goal is to simplify that journey, and this software does exactly that.” In addition to receiving their trade quote, Glyngary’s partners will now receive a secure link to their personalised e-quote portal, where they can apply their logo, adjust pricing, add installation costs, and input customer details. The result is a smooth, professional quoting process from manufacturer to installer to homeowner. Glyngary has experienced rapid growth since its rebrand in October 2024, and this latest investment ensures the company is well-equipped to support that momentum with scalable, streamlined systems, says the company.

Launched on the CAB Stand at this month’s FIT Show, the new voluntary scheme commits signatories to standardise u-value calculations. step to help counter the rapid decline of bee populations and protect the local environment. The initiative forms part of a wider Biodiversity Policy being rolled out across Senior’s UK sites under the guidance of the company’s newly appointed UK Sustainability Lead, Luke Osborne. Commenting on the new beehive initiative, Luke said: “Helping nature thrive is essential for a more sustainable future, and we’re proud to be playing our part. The new beehive at our Rotherham site may seem like a small step, but it reflects our wider ambition to support the recovery of nature and embed biodiversity into how we use and manage our land. The U-value Charter will offer an agreed set of parameters that all charter members agree to follow, ensuring the information on public display is an accurate assessment”, explained Nigel Headford, chief executive, CAB. “To say that comparing the performance of different

It is key to our future growth plans.” TWR was founded by Laura’s father and managing director, Terry, who set up the family business in 2001 from a smaller unit on Woodbine Road, just a stone’s throw away from the new facility. “As a family business which started out just around the corner from here, it’s been a real labour of love renovating this site,” he said. “When we purchased the building, it was in dire need of repair. It needed a new roof and a whole load of structural improvements, so it was very much a complete rebuild. “However, given the size of the site, its central position in the city and the fact that we started out just around the corner, it just ticked all of the boxes.
TRADE NEWS “Don’t get me wrong, it was a real challenge getting everything done in just six months, but we’re already reaping the benefits and are thrilled to be back in our home city. “It’s a really proud moment for us as both a family and as a business.” TWR Group was supported in its move to the new facility by the business investment team at Sunderland City Council. The team provided advice and support, as well as signposting to business support specialist UMi, which provided the company with a £50,000 grant towards the refurbishments. Cllr Kevin Johnston, Portfolio Holder for Business, Housing and Regeneration at Sunderland City Council, said: “We are thrilled
that TWR has committed its future to Sunderland. “Six months ago, the building was dilapidated, and its future use was in doubt, so it is amazing to see how it has been transformed in such a short space of time. “The team have worked absolute wonders to turn it into a modern manufacturing facility which will not only secure the company’s future in the city but will also create opportunities for local people, while enabling it to continue innovating and growing. “It is a real city success story and is one we are delighted as a Council to have been able to support. We would like to wish them all the best for the future.” Anita Economides, Business
Adviser at UMi, said: “The Business Growth Fund was set up to boost business growth and job creation in the region, and this is a fantastic case study of how it has done just that. “By working with our partners in the UK Government and Sunderland City Council, we’ve been able to support TWR with the funding required to expand its operations, invest in innovation, and safeguard skilled jobs in the advanced manufacturing sector. This investment not only strengthens TWR’s future but also contributes to the region’s reputation as a hub for high-value manufacturing and engineering excellence.” For more information on commercial property in Sunderland, visit: https://bit.ly/4d3mk5T

Veka announces
strategic expansion of recycling operations Veka plc has announced a significant investment in the expansion of its recycled material capabilities at its Burnley site, with the installation of two new internal silos and a direct feed system. This strategic development supports Veka’s long-term sustainability goals and reinforces its commitment to increasing recycled content and operational efficiency, says the company. Veka currently have one silo dedicated to recycled material; this expansion will increase their overall silo capacity to over 300 tonnes and further streamline the handling of recycled PVCu materials. Two silos will be dedicated to white recycled pellets, the other to coloured recycled pellets – optimised for maximum handling efficiency and automated flow. 22 WINDOW NEWS | MAY 2025
Operating from its Wellingborough facility, Veka Recycling, part of Veka plc, processes end-of-life PVCu frames back into pellet material which is then used to produce new, high-performance, energy-efficient window and door profile. Through this closedloop system, PVCu products can be recycled up to ten times, significantly reducing waste and extending product lifespans up to 350 years, claims the company. The new direct feed system will streamline operations and reduce forklift traffic on-site, cutting down on manual handling and improving safety for staff. A new unloading station will also be added to allow for flexible feeding or future bagging, further increasing operational adaptability, according to the company.
This enhancement is part of Veka’s long-term sustainability goals, specifically its 2027 ambition to boost efficiency and increase recycled content in their products. Approximately 95% of the PVCu waste collected by Veka is recycled, with 60% re-entering the market as new window products—demonstrating a successful circular economy in action. Recycled materials are now central to Veka’s current and future product range. Innovations such as the ReCore Cill, featuring a recycled core encased in virgin white PVCu and a 15mm frame extension made with recycled content are setting new benchmarks in sustainable fenestration without compromising performance or aesthetics. According to the company, Veka is proving that sustainable innovation is not just possible, it’s scalable. The upgrade in operations is just another step forward in Veka’s mission to increase capacity for recycled materials, reduce waste, and lead the industry into a more sustainable future.

New toughener cuts Cornwall Group’s annual carbon emissions by 62 tonnes
The new furnace, which has been transported from Finland, will deliver a significant reduction in carbon emissions – cutting an estimated 62.1 tonnes of CO2e annually – aligning with Cornwall Group’s long-term vision for sustainable manufacturing and operational efficiency. Its advanced heating system ensures more effective energy use and improved heat transfer, leading to a reduction in electricity consumption by approximately 299,984 kWh per year. The installation is part of Cornwall Group’s wider multi-million-pound investment programme, which includes a further two brand new furnaces due to be installed at different Group sites in 2025 alone. “Reducing carbon emissions is a key priority for our business and the industry as a whole”, said Mark Mitchell, chairman of Cornwall Group. “This new furnace allows us to operate more efficiently while making a tangible impact on our carbon footprint. “And on top of that, rising energy costs and increased demand for thicker glass means that we need to stay ahead of the curve, ensuring we can continue to supply high-quality products, without unexpected price hikes for our customers.”
Cornwall Group has taken a major step in reducing its carbon footprint with the installation of the first of three, state-of-the-art, Glaston Tempering Furnaces. The first toughener has been installed at Birmingham-based

Gerda doors UK distributor Pioneer Trading Company has recently taken on Tamworth based home improvement company Bradley Scott Windows as one of its approved Gerda doors installers. Founder and director Andy Farrington felt that there was a significant gap in the range of doors they were offering their local customer base, and the Gerda steel and aluminium door range sat neatly into that gap in terms of performance and affordability. Bradley Scott Windows have since installed a Gerda Optima 60 in anthracite grey with a 1500mm long bar handle in black anoda. The company’s showroom remains a focal part of its business, drawing in customers from around the region who feel more comfortable getting as much tangible experience of window and door products as possible.
“We always like to do something a bit different, and while our mural of Captain Tom and the queen made people smile during difficult times, we fully expect the Gerda door to do the same in terms of providing an entrance door solution which is robust, beautifully engineered, and looks the business,” said Andy Farrington. Bradley Scott’s office manager Ashley Kitchen added: “There is a definite growing interest in steel and aluminium doors not just for their thermal efficiencies and sleek good looks – the level of security is superior and there is a solidity to thier construction that impresses every time it is opened and closed in the showroom. in focus over the Easter period and other seasonal distractions. Still, lead levels remained above February, pointing to an overall upward trend compared to the winter months. Sales softened slightly, moving from 52.5 in March to 51.4 in April, a 2.1% decrease. This modest change supports the narrative that while homeowners are still converting, they may be taking more time to finalise decisions or committing to smaller projects.
April’s figures suggest a market finding its rhythm after the momentum we saw in March. Although some metrics have dipped slightly, others show signs of improving consistency, reflecting a steady – if cautious – consumer sentiment.
Average leads decreased by 5.5%, down from 114.7 in March to 108.4 in April, signalling a mild pullback in new enquiries. This isn’t unusual considering the shift 38 WINDOW NEWS | MAY 2025
That’s echoed in the average order value, which dropped significantly from £5990 in March to £3994 in April – a 33.3% decrease. While this seems stark, it points to a stabilisation following March’s spike, which likely included a number of significant orders. April’s figure is still well above February’s £3688, reinforcing the view that consumer investment is still healthy, albeit more measured.
VIEWPOINT
Conversion rates improved slightly, up from 39.6% in March to 39.9% in April, representing a 0.8% increase. While marginal, it’s a positive signal that a higher proportion of enquiries are being turned into business, suggesting more decisive buying behaviour. In our view, the data from April signals a normalising market. After a buoyant March, April’s results are reassuringly steady. Installers should be confident in sustained interest but must continue
to offer value, clarity, and excellent service to maintain high conversion. This is also a timely reminder of the power of data. Tariffs and
tears? What will US tariffs do to the UK construction industry? Nigel Headford, chief executive, Council for Aluminium in Building reflects.
‘Unprecedented’, ‘the end of globalisation’, ‘an economic nuclear winter’ – the language used to describe the introduction of sweeping tariffs by the Trump administration at the start of this month, are emotive. They aren’t, however, a surprise. Donald Trump was elected on a mandate to drive economic change. A shake-up of trading agreements, particularly with 40 WINDOW NEWS | MAY 2025
China and those countries seen to be aligned to or under its economic influence, was always on the cards. The introduction of ‘reciprocal’ tariffs has nonetheless delivered a shock to the global economy and while the UK has escaped the brunt of Trump’s frustrations, the escalating trade war between the US, China and Europe, will have

clear ramifications for the UK construction industry. Construction thrives on certainty. It is clear, that against the wider economic backdrop, that that is in short supply. At a headline level in the shortterm project costs may increase, where products are being sourced globally. The flip side is that reduced demand in the US, particularly for Chinese products, may lead to an easing of material inflation in the medium term. The bigger issue is confidence. Against the backdrop of an economic slowdown, investors may delay new projects, putting contractors and their supply chain under pressure. It is also worth remembering that the latest round of US tariffs follow the 25% tariffs on aluminium imports into the US at the beginning of March.
VIEWPOINT This has prompted warnings from the Aluminium Federation (ALFED), that while on the one hand tariffs have slowed demand for aluminium into the US in general, they have also increased demand for aluminium scrap, which are exempt. ALFED has warned that this could lead to a risk of domestic ‘leakage’ of scrap from the UK, something which could threaten the circular economy and the UK’s sustainability objectives. It makes schemes like the CAB Closed-Loop Recycling Scheme, even more important. It supports industry sustainability by isolating waste streams so that higher value aluminium alloys used in construction are ringfenced. This also means that manufacturers can command a higher price, from recycling specialists.
Putting concerns about the prospects for the global economy to one side, a glimmer of hope may be that the swirling economic headwinds created by US increase pressure on the Bank of England to lower interest rates. This is something which could deliver a little more energy to a still challenging home improvement market. It’s also important to remember that the majority of building materials used in UK construction are sourced domestically (75%). Alongside the Government’s target of delivering 1.5million new homes by the end of the parliamentary term, there will be opportunities, as well as challenges. We’re working with the aluminium building products and construction sectors to support CAB Members through
what have been a challenging few months and to take advantage of market growth as it accelerates the second half of this year. This includes our Technical Conference which will be held at the University of Loughborough on 15th May. It includes technical updates on regulatory change, sustainability and the application of software innovations including the use of virtual reality tools and AI in the built environment. In the meantime, we’ll continue to do what we do best as an industry. That is to continue to show resilience, continue to innovate and to deliver sustainable building products as partners to the construction industry. www.c-a-b.org.uk

Spring forward: how installers can capitalise on
seasonal homeowner trends Amelia Gaughan, head of marketing for Affordable Windows Group, discusses why spring is the ideal season for installers to re-evaluate their business and embrace new opportunities. At last, spring is upon us! This time of year is a byword for new beginnings and fresh opportunities. Like the flowers bursting into bloom, this spring season is a symbol of renewal and fresh beginnings. As the days grow longer and warmer, homeowners turn their attention to their spaces, envisioning ways to refresh and breathe new life into their home in time for balmy afternoons, sunny barbecues and family gatherings. Naturally, this means opportunities 42 WINDOW NEWS | MAY 2025
for installers to win new projects, making the most of better weather (we hope!) to achieve their clients’ dreams. However, any installer is only as good as the materials they’re working with. Which, in turn, means dealing with trusted suppliers. As we approach this season of growth, it’s the perfect time for forward-thinking installers to evaluate their offering and position themselves to capitalise on the surge in home improvement projects.

Capitalising on consumer behaviour Springtime – with associations of spring cleaning, refreshing your home and generally clearing out the winter cobwebs – is a traditionally popular time for homeowners to embark on home improvement projects. According to a report published by Aviva in February 2025, almost seven million UK homeowners plan to renovate their homes in the next two years. This represents a significant opportunity for installers who are looking to win new projects. Our Timberlook flush sash windows provide the authentic timber aesthetic that many period property owners desire, whilst delivering the practical benefits of modern uPVC. However, they

also come with several product innovations that put them a cut above the rest. Our window range incorporates Timberweld joins (to replicate traditional mortise and tenon joints), optional heritage Radlington cills, authentic “peardrop” and “monkeytail” handles and textured wood-effect foils. Alongside these period features, we’ve also incorporated innovative designs, such as concealed trickle vents and an optional glazing upgrade that brings the U-value down to just 1.2. However, if you’re an installer looking to scale your business, the right supplier won’t just provide products; they will also equip you with the tools to sell more effectively. We understand that selling heritage-style windows presents unique challenges, particularly when homeowners struggle
to envision the transformation. That’s why we’ve developed comprehensive support systems that help our installers sell with absolute confidence. Our partnership with Tommy Trinder’s Framepoint Technology provides installers with an easy way to showcase the features that make the Timberlook range so special. In just 18 months, Timberlook installers have quoted £14.3m worth of heritage windows and doors through the platform, converting £2.6m into confirmed orders. Beyond this technology, our lead generation programme now delivers over 500 qualified monthly opportunities for our installer network – triple our initial target. We further support Timberlook installers with a dedicated UKwide delivery fleet, complimentary sample windows, free-of-charge branded installer apparel, and easy access to technical specifications and ordering forms. Diversifying your portfolio for growth Spring also presents an ideal opportunity to expand your product offerings to capture different market segments. There’s no denying that heritage systems have experienced a huge boom in recent years, and this is why we recently launched Timberlook’s sister-brand, Decorio. While Timberlook caters to those seeking classic timber aesthetics,
Timberlook
Decorio’s steel-look aluminium range of windows and doors appeals to homeowners drawn to art-deco/ industrial-inspired designs and slim sightlines. For installers, offering both ranges allows you to serve a broader customer base without compromising on quality or authenticity. Whether a project involves a Victorian terrace requiring timber-look flush casements or a converted warehouse where steel-look doors create the perfect statement, having access to both systems means you never need to turn away business. As the season changes, ambitious installers have a genuine opportunity to drive substantial business growth. By partnering with suppliers who offer distinctive, premium products backed by comprehensive support, you can position yourself to capture a significant share of the spring renovation market. At Timberlook, we’re committed to supporting our installer partners through this busy period and beyond, providing not just exceptional products but the expertise and tools to help your business flourish. After all, spring should be a time of growth – not just for gardens, but for forwardthinking installation businesses as well. www.timberlook.com www.decorio-doors.com WINDOW NEWS | MAY 2025 43

How to ‘retrofit right’ – what can social housing
learn from fenestration?
The UK’s 4.4 million social homes face challenges to meet 2035 and 2050 net zero targets and improving properties’ thermal efficiency is crucial to this. With housing associations and local authorities under pressure to act. Martin Hitchin, CEO at Rehau UK, discusses how the fenestration sector can position itself as a valued and trusted advisor and emphasise the impact of medium retrofits for a sector looking for high-quality, high-efficiency and cost-effective solutions. Q: Why is decarbonising the residential sector, particularly social housing, so crucial for the UK’s sustainability goals? A: It’s a really interesting fact that the residential sector produces more carbon annually than the nation’s cars combined. With net zero in mind, it’s understandable that the spotlight is on the homes we live in. As social housing is publicly owned, there’s undoubtedly additional pressure to not only build energy-efficient properties, but decarbonise existing properties too. 44 WINDOW NEWS | MAY 2025
Then there’s the sheer scale of this challenge – around 4.4 million of the UK’s social housing properties were built between 1945 and 1980. These homes weren’t designed with net zero in mind, but decarbonising them is essential to the UK’s sustainability goals. However, there’s a clear and encouraging direction of travel as far as legislation is concerned, and that is something that should definitely be of interest to fabricators and installers. For example, under the UK’s Clean Growth Strategy, social housing

social housing and public buildings, which has been further bolstered by a third wave of £1.25 billion in additional funding. Additionally, there is support from the Home Upgrade Grant and the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme, to help drive the sector towards a greener future. Clearly, the will is there to make social housing more sustainable. However, local authorities will need to ensure that every pound spent works as hard as possible to achieve the desired energy efficiency improvements. Fabricators and installers that can clearly demonstrate this will be well-placed to generate new business upgrading this existing building stock to meet rigorous energy efficiency targets. Q: How can the specification of windows and doors contribute to the thermal performance and sustainability of social housing? A: Social housing stakeholders constantly have to consider what cost-effective components will have the greatest impact on a property’s thermal performance. 46 WINDOW NEWS | MAY 2025
Solely on the surface, it is evident that windows and doors are a major source of heat loss in individual properties. Greater familiarity with the complex legislative and regulatory landscape around these components will therefore be key to improving the thermal performance in building stock. Focusing on these standards will ensure local authority and housing association stakeholders select the most high-quality, energy-efficient window and door systems. To achieve the necessary scale in reducing emissions and enhancing energy efficiency, it is crucial that reliable supply chains are established, bolstered or maintained. This includes leveraging expertise from parties within this supply chain, from component manufacturers and fabricators to installers with thirdparty certifications, which will be key to achieving energy efficiency and decarbonisation goals. There’s a real opportunity for the fenestration sector to fill this knowledge gap, and this is explored in our latest whitepaper, ‘Retrofit Right – Making Social Housing More Energy-Efficient’.
It provides valuable insights into improving a property’s energy efficiency through informed specification of these components, and the importance of medium retrofits in improving the thermal performance of social housing. Additionally, it explores new digital innovations from Rehau that provide a clear and concise supply chain to if parts need replacing during installation, or for future breakages. Q: What factors should fenestration professionals emphasise for social housing stakeholders specifying new frames for retrofitting projects? A: When working on retrofitting projects of this kind, it is important that fenestration professionals emphasise that multiple factors to be considered during specification, including design, aesthetics, thermal efficiency, noise attenuation, security, and ventilation standards. With local authority and housing association teams becoming increasingly resource-stretched, financially restricted and time-poor, it is imperative that manufacturers, fabricators and installers highlight their expertise.
VIEWPOINT authorities and housing associations carrying out retrofitting works. However, fenestration professionals should look to go beyond the point-ofpurchase if they are to stand out among their competitors and generate new business. For instance, in the event of further installation work, such as following breakages or installing frame accessories, it is vital that this work is completed quickly and cost-effectively to ensure the thermal performance of affected properties are not compromised.
By doing so, they can bridge knowledge gaps, ease workload burdens and make significant cost savings in a way that will undoubtedly be appreciated. As explained in Retrofit Right, this includes highlighting third-party certifications and demonstrating how relevant accreditations and standards show that projects will be completed on time, within budget, and to an excellent work standard. Q: How can polymer frames contribute to reducing carbon footprints in social housing retrofits? A: In an environment where energy efficiency is crucial and retrofitting works are expected to grow exponentially, demonstrating the thermal performance of specific frames will be key. However, overall sustainability – that is, the carbon footprint of individual components from manufacturing to disposal – is also crucial. While PVCu has often been noted for its durability, affordability, and lightweight properties, advances in recycling infrastructure have also made polymer one of the most sustainable frame materials
too. Rehau UK alone has heavily invested in this area, with our PVCR polymer recycling plant processes 13,200 tonnes of postconsumer polymer windows and doors annually. All this must be considered alongside the fact that the average lifespan of a PVCu frame is 35 years, and it can be recycled up to ten times before showing signs of degradation. This combination of infrastructure and material performance credentials make polymer frames an attractive option when upgrading social housing. The full lifecycle of the product is clearly demonstrated within the circular economy. Fenestration professionals who can emphasise these points will be well-placed to win new project work from social housing stakeholders.” Q: What other considerations should fenestration professionals emphasise to social housing stakeholders replacing window and door frames? A: Material considerations and performance standards are undoubtedly key for local
Data-driven digital technologies can streamline this process, which is increasingly important as maintenance teams become more time-poor, financially restricted and overstretched. Integrated into window and door systems, technologies such as digital ID cards offer a way forward. Innovations like Rehau’s Window.ID provide quick access to key data, greatly reducing the need for time-consuming inspection or measurement appointments. Instead, and as detailed in Retrofit Right, expert frame specialists can be quickly contacted via an app, significantly shortening the overall process. This allows housing associations and local authorities to save money by reducing the number of visits to affected properties, ensuring efficient and effective maintenance. An awareness of this technology, its benefits and the ability to convey this to under-pressure social housing stakeholders may give fabricators and installers an edge over their competitors. With retrofitting works expected to rise exponentially, fenestration professionals should look to emphasise these added-value services.” To download Rehau’s latest report, ‘Retrofit Right – Making Social Housing More EnergyEfficient’, click here https://bit.ly/42PnMG3 WINDOW NEWS | MAY 2025 47

Streamlining
success: why single source supply is a game changer for installers
Universal Trade Frames’ sales director, Richard Hammond, highlights the logistical benefits and competitive advantages of single-source supply for installers of premium window and door products. Increasing demand for premium fenestration products, such as vertical sliding windows, flush casements and high-end composite doors, has seen an explosion of specialist suppliers emerge in recent decades. While the healthy consumer appetite for all things high-end presents a significant opportunity for installers, multiple supply partners can result in increased operational costs and in turn, reduced profits, according to Richard Hammond, sales director at Universal Trade Frames. “Often, installers will go to different places that specialise in the various premium products they need; one supplier for vertical sliding windows, another supplier for composite doors, and so on,” explains Richard. “For every specialist supplier they use, there’s 48 WINDOW NEWS | MAY 2025
associated admin and logistics which can be a headache for the installer trying to co-ordinate everything. “There’s also an increased risk of delays from multiple deliveries, which can have a knock-on effect on the whole project. The result, is that what should be a high margin installation becomes significantly less profitable, and that’s where single-source supply comes in.” Universal Trade Frames’ premium product offering includes the complete Residence Collection; Optima Flush from Epwin; the Spectus Vertical Sliding Sash Window; and the Spectus Fully Reversible and Tilt-and-Turn options. Solidor composite doors are another cornerstone of the range. “Premium products are often installed at the same time, so getting everything for a job, including glass, on one delivery, makes life a lot easier,” continues Richard. “If it’s all coming from one supplier, it makes things so much simpler. You’re streamlining the whole process by placing a single order, with everything on one invoice. This saves a significant amount of time – and for installers, time is money.” Operating from its 30,000ft2 state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Shropshire, the Universal Trade Frames workforce includes a ‘special ops’ team of experienced fabricators, dedicated to the company’s premium product offering. “Absolutely every product we make is manufactured with absolute precision through cutting-edge automation,” says Richard, “but our premium range of windows and doors require that little bit extra.”
VIEWPOINT “That’s where our specialist team comes in, because consumers expect a higher quality product – and a flawless finish – and that can only be ensured and maintained with a human touch.” Offering the full Residence Collection, including R9, R7, R2 and the RD range presents installers with the chance to up-sell, as Richard explains: “We supply everything the Residence Collection offers from a single source,” he says. “That means our customers can pitch a fully matched R9 window and door to homeowners, which creates a great opportunity increase margin.” For homeowners with tighter budget restrictions, Richard suggests that Epwin’s Optima Flush casement window is an ideal option. “Our product range gives our customers the opportunity to up-sell at the most premium end, but still pick up the business if the homeowner’s budget doesn’t quite stretch that far, by offering Optima Flush.” As the largest supplier of Solidor composites after Solidor itself, Universal Trade Frames manufactures the complete Traditional and Italia Collections inhouse. All Solidor glass designs and hardware are available, as well as extra options for added differentiation. The doors feature multipoint locking as standard, plus Yale Platinum 3* cylinders. Helping installers win more business with authentic details to attract the most discerning homeowners, Universal Trade Frames also supplies the Spectus Vertical Sliding Sash, designed specifically as a timber box sash window replacement. Richard highlights how the option of an ultraslim 37mm meeting rail makes it “virtually indistinguishable” from an authentic timber sash window, while a 128mm front to back depth, simplifies installation. Specialist products, such as the Spectus Fully Reversible Window are also available from Universal Trade Frames as part of a single order alongside its standard or premium ranges, reducing the time spent chasing or anticipating multiple orders. “Single deliveries reduce admin, waiting times and site delays, allowing installers to complete projects faster and take on more business as a result,” concludes Richard. “That kind of streamlining equates to real-world savings that can be a gamechanger for your business model, and I’d urge all installers to maximise efficiency and profitability by switching to a single-source supplier today.” www.utfl.co.uk WINDOW NEWS | MAY 2025 49

for business is essential for growth : Reaction to the Spring Statement
government to hear. Every new demand placed on the private sector reduces our ability to invest, grow and create jobs, and that has a knock-on effect to the economy as whole.
By Neil Evans, Managing Director, Veka plc.
If the government is truly a government on the side of working people, and if it wants to make good on its promise to get more people into secure work, then it needs to recognise this pressure on their employers.
Every new demand placed on the private sector reduces our ability to invest, grow and create jobs, and that has a knock-on effect to the economy as whole.
The Chancellor’s Spring Statement landed at a time when many businesses, including Veka are navigating economic pressures. Whether that’s through rising costs, uncertain markets or just the general difficulty of trying to do more with less. As a business, Veka has absorbed the National Insurance increase across both our businesses – which is not an insignificant amount – because we believe 50 WINDOW NEWS | MAY 2025
in protecting our people. We still plan to deliver salary increases. We see this as a reflection of our commitment to employees, their welfare and maintaining morale as they too are feeling the struggle of these challenging economic times. But continuing to do this isn’t sustainable without growth. Without growth, it gets harder and harder to keep making those kinds of decisions. This is part of a bigger message we’d like the

VIEWPOINT only have limited impact in filling the gaping skills gap. What can the private sector do? At Veka, we are constantly identifying opportunities to eliminate waste within business processes and activities. We entered this year with a much sharper focus on who we are and how we intend to operate, and this has helped us to navigate the additional costs imposed on us during the Autumn Budget. Speaking from our own experience, I genuinely believe that at nearly every level of our organisation, we now have much greater understading about our purpose and how we aim to drive the business forward.
this sentiment is reflected across our, and many other industries too. At the moment, we’re not seeing immediate growth, we’re holding steady. One of the key areas the government is insisting will drive growth is the changes to planning reforms and announcements like the ambition of 1.5 million new homes. On the surface, this sounded like a big growth opportunity for our sector. But, no one in our space really believed that target was realistic without tackling the severe skills shortages in construction. The Government has pledged £600m to train 60,000 more engineers, construction workers, electricians and carpenters by 2029. But, looking at previous data on the volumes of people who have left the sector in recent years, and the challenge of an aging workforce – meaning that we anticipate more to leave as they hit retirement – this move may
To support that alignment, we hold quarterly briefings for all employees. These sessions are complemented by a cascade of communication through the senior leadership team, ensuring consistent messaging and action throughout our business. One of the key lessons we’ve learned, is the importance of keeping things simple. Clarity and simplicity in communication are essential. Across our sector, we’re also encouraging a more open conversation about the value of what we provide. I believe that businesses in the private sector need to price responsibly to stay healthy. We’ve always aimed to be fair, to give our customers plenty of notice of any increases and to be transparent. But we also have to be brave and we have to believe in profit as fuel for future investment. A ‘race to the bottom’ in pricing helps no one. What do we need to see from government? Our sector has long called for targeted VAT adjustments to incentivise home improvement. There’s a real opportunity to stimulate home improvements
by adjusting VAT which would have the biggest direct knock-on effect on demand in our sector. But every year it’s ignored, and it continues to be a missed opportunity. Stimulating activity here would bring a multiplier effect, job creation, manufacturing growth, and improving living standards. We need to see what the outcome of the rise in National Insurance will deliver. Any solid business understands that forecasting is key. It would be far more reassuring to have a clearer picture of the actual impact this measure will have. There was some criticism at the time suggesting it hadn’t been fully thought through, so now it’s important to understand what our investment – because that’s essentially what it is – will do for the economy. We would also like to see acknowledgement from the government that private sector businesses like ours are playing a major role in keeping the economy moving. We’re absorbing costs, protecting our people and pushing for growth. But we are not endless sponges able to absorb it all and we can’t do it alone. Ultimately, if the private sector is to do the heavy lifting of recovery and resilience, it needs clarity, consistency and a partnership approach from government. Only this will create the promised ‘jobs in every corner of the economy’ and deliver security for working people. Neil Evans is managing director of Veka plc. Is your IGU supply
chain secure? Could a series of pinch points for manufacturers put your IGU supply at risk? And what you can do about it.
IGU manufacturers have faced challenge after challenge. Against the backdrop of a still difficult market, that according to commentators creates a potential 52 WINDOW NEWS | MAY 2025

limped on despite tough market conditions and high operational costs, but they’re stretched. We’ve already seen casualties and I don’t think for a moment we’ve seen the last. “That has the potential to leave installers exposed, unable to complete jobs or paying a premium for IGUs, later this year as the market recovers, putting their businesses at risk.” What’s happening to the National Minimum Wage and National Insurance? Effective from April 2025, the National Minimum Wage (NMW)
VIEWPOINT and National Living Wage (NLW) rates will increase from £11.44 to £12.21 per hour, for anyone aged 21 and over (National Living Wage) – that’s a 6.7% rise. There’s also a 16.3% rise for 18–20-year-olds and an 18% rise for 16 and 17-year-olds. For a full-time employee aged 21 or over, working 37.5 hours per week, this increase translates to an annual salary rise from approximately £22,308 to £23,809.50, an additional cost of £1,501.50 per employee. On top of that and with a far wider impact employer’s National Insurance Contributions increase from 13.8% to 15%. This has been accompanied by a reduction in the Secondary. This is point at which employers start paying NICs, which will decrease from £9,100 to £5,000 per year. On a salary of £30,000 per year, this would add around £850 cost per employee. “A lot of IGU business remain labour heavy”, continues Jody. “An increase in cost in National Insurance of £800 plus is a bitter pill to swallow in a lack lustre market. “Consolidation is likely as some owners decide that the economics don’t work for them anymore, while others may find that their hand is forced. “That is likely to create disruption and potentially as thae market recovers, pressure on supply.” How is Emplas helping its customers to capitalise on market consolidation Emplas announced the installation of a second Forel Vertical IGU Line this month [April]. It gives the trade fabricator one of the UK’s most advanced IGU lines and doubles capacity, also increasing automation and improving product quality.
It includes the Forel Vertical Washer, Emplas has also opted for Forel’s Art AS Flexible Spacer Applicator. This automatically applies spacer bar to the edge of the glass sheet with an ultra-high level of accuracy, delivering an instant and far better bond than traditional spacer systems, maximizing thermal performance. The Forel coupling press then simultaneously couples IGU’s while filling them with gas ahead of automatic sealing, delivering a highly accurate final seal on units and significantly reducing the likelihood of failure. “It gives us capacity to increase supply without compromising on product quality as well as delivering reliability in supply. It’s not about taking people out of the process but it is about reducing the risk of error. Increased automation does that.” Why energy efficiency will drive increased demand for new windows and doors If the start to 2025 has been slower than many might have hoped, Jody suggests another regulatory change may offer installers increased opportunity in the medium term. At the same time as the Government was introducing the increase in the National Minimum Wage, Ofgem, the energy regulator was increasing the energy price cap by 6.4%. This delivers an increase in the average energy bill for a typical household from £1,738 to £1,849. “There is a growing acceptance amongst homeowners that higher energy prices weren’t a blip but are here to stay for the long term”, Jody says. “That makes energy efficiency an even more important driver for
the home improvement market going forward, generating opportunities to upsell on glass.” Emplas supplies a comprehensive range of products from Saint-Gobain. This includes Planitherm Standard, Comfort and Comfort Plus. The case for buying in glazed frames Installers have historically chosen to buy glass and frames separately because it has allowed them to work with local or regional suppliers. “The pressure on the IGU supply chain makes that model more far more fragile”, Jody says. “It also brings increased complexity to your business”, Jody says. “Buy in from us and you can order frames and glass 24/7 through EVA our customer portal, track deliveries and get real time notifications 30 minutes before arrival. “There’s one order to place so less room for error; no marrying up glass and frames; and only one invoice to pay. It simplifies running your business.” Concluding thoughts “The market hasn’t been easy, but it is picking up. The challenge is that improved trading conditions may come too late for a lot of IGU manufactures and manufacturers in general”, Jody says. He concludes: “If you don’t have to worry about the stability of your supply chain and you don’t have to worry about the potential disruption losing your IGU supplier could cause, you can concentrate on capitalising on the opportunities that an improving market delivers.” www.emplas.co.uk WINDOW NEWS | MAY 2025 53

“Many homeowners see their properties as a reflection of themselves and the right windows and doors can signal good taste or affluence,” says Richard Hammond, sales director at Shrewsbury-based fabricator, Universal Trade frames. “For period homes, sympathetic replication of traditional aesthetics can also demonstrate a deeper understanding of a property’s age and style, painting the resident in a cultured and responsible light.” According to Richard, attention to detail is key when it comes
Universal Trade Frames expanded its premium offer last year with the addition of the Spectus VS slim meeting rail to its range. With narrow sightlines of just 37mm, it perfectly replicates the dimensions of traditional timber sash window products without compromising on security or energy efficiency performance. “At 37mm, the slim sash meeting rail option on our Spectus VS helps to create a product that is almost indistinguishable from a traditional timber sash window,” continues Richard. “Combined with additional period features such as ovolo moulding to the frame; sashes and beads; and the mechanically jointed deep bottom rail, it really enhances the product’s authenticity.” As a single source of supply for a range of premium products, Universal Trade Frames also offers the full

This means HeritageWeld Residence Collection windows manufactured by the fabricator can be fitted in exactly the same way as any other window, saving installers time and money on site and maximising margin. “HeritageWeld Residence Collection windows can be glazed on-site by one man, delivering significant cost savings and increasing margins,” explains Richard. “It also means installers can source glass locally from their local supplier. If the glass unit fails, you can just replace it as you would any other unit. “Most importantly it provides an opportunity to up-sell at point of retail,” he adds. “You’re offering a product that looks exactly as it should in terms of authenticity, but it’s stronger, which can only be a good thing for the homeowner. “Subtle features such as this, as well as the ultra-slim meeting rail, offer a significant opportunity for installers to target those homeowners who care about the finer details when it comes to authentic aesthetics,” concludes Richard. “These little things can lead to big gains for those who take advantage.” www.utfl.co.uk WINDOW NEWS | MAY 2025 55

new buildings in England to be Net Zero-ready by 2025 under the Future Homes Standard, but manufacturers like Glass Express Midlands say these goals will be difficult to achieve without industry and government collaboration. “Glass businesses across the UK are holding the fort, continuing to offer low-cost, energy efficient solutions while our own overheads are skyrocketing in the process,” Arun added. “We’re asking for the government to sit down with businesses like ours and ask, ‘How can we help you do more?’ as opposed to increasing taxes that make long-term investment harder.” Glass Express Midlands continues to back British manufacturing through its Made in Britain accreditation and a firm commitment to low-carbon supply chains, but Arun says stronger government engagement is critical. “The glass industry is not the enemy of sustainability – it’s one of its best chances of success.”

The Emplas flag flies at half-mast. It is with a heavy heart that we announce the sad passing of Steve Johnson. Born, raised, and educated in Kettering, Steve left school in 1967, at the age of 15, to join Charles Wicksteed Engineers as an apprentice wood machinist. In 1972, Steve joined the 40 Commando Brigade of the Royal Marines – a light infantry unit made up of some of the toughest marines, before moving on to the 45 Commando Unit. Steve served for 17 distinguished years achieving a multitude of accolades, including many tours of duty, notably Northern Ireland, and the training of Elite Marines 68 WINDOW NEWS | MAY 2025
in Arctic Combat. He was also part of the Marines Equestrian Show Jumping team.
Steve joined Emplas in 1989, as operations director, working closely with the company’s founder and his brother, Kevin Johnson. Over 14 years, Steve led the business through key milestones, including our BS 5750 certification in 1991. In 1992, Steve was instrumental in Emplas being one of the first in the UK to achieve the BS 7412 Kitemark alongside other national window companies (only 22 companies achieved this). Steve also single-handedly planned and delivered our
factory relocation from Brunel Close, which consisted of four separate factories, to Huxley Close in April 2001 — an incredible achievement that shaped the Emplas we know today. Away from work, Steve was a much-loved family man. He married his wife, Marie, in November 1974, and they celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary last November. He was a proud father to his son; Ben, and daughter; Lauren. He was also a proud Grampy to Zachary, Isabella and Harper. Those of you who were fortunate to have known or worked with Steve will understand the meaningful legacy he leaves behind. Emplas has lost one of its own. Steve was a Royal Marine and an Emplas leader in every sense of the word, but above all, he was a proud, devoted, loving family man. Kevin Johnson describes Steve as “the best brother a man could ever have.”

Elevating pricing strategies: a path to profitability
for window and door installers Simon Jarman, CEO of Clever Bean Accounting, discusses critical pricing strategies for window and door installation businesses. In the fiercely competitive world of windows and doors, pricing strategy can make or break a business. Yet, many installation companies are caught in a destructive cycle of price-based competition, eroding margins and jeopardising not just their own future, but the sustainability of our entire industry. As installation businesses, you are the cornerstone of our sector. Your success ripples up the supply chain, benefiting fabricators, systems houses, glass processors and component suppliers. However, the prevalent approach of basing prices solely on competitor rates, without a clear understanding of costs and margins, is a recipe for disaster. This race to the bottom is 70 WINDOW NEWS | MAY 2025
unsustainable. It leads to squeezed margins, cashflow problems, and ultimately, business failures. To break this cycle, we need a paradigm shift in how we approach pricing. First and foremost, it’s crucial to understand your costs thoroughly. This goes beyond materials and direct labour. You need to account for overhead costs, vehicle expenses, marketing, and even the cost of your own time as a business owner. Without a clear picture of your total costs, it’s impossible to set prices that ensure profitability. But understanding costs is just the beginning. The key to sustainable pricing lies in differentiation and value-based
pricing. Instead of competing on price alone, focus on what makes your business unique. Is it your exceptional customer service? Your expertise in energy-efficient installations? Your use of cutting-edge technology? Identify these differentiators and make them central to your pricing strategy. Value-based pricing involves setting your prices based on the perceived value to the customer, rather than just your costs or competitor prices. However, as an industry, we’ve
FINANCE been inadvertently lowering this perceived value through our pricing practices. It’s time to change that narrative. We need to elevate prices across the board and simultaneously invest in increasing the customer’s perceived value of our products and services. This might involve showcasing the long-term energy savings of your installations, highlighting your use of premium materials, or emphasising your highly trained installation teams. It’s also crucial to invest in training your sales team on your pricing strategy and value proposition. They should be able to confidently explain your pricing and the value you offer. A well-trained team can justify higher prices to customers, reducing the need for discounts
and reinforcing the perceived value of your services. Remember, your prices send a message about your brand and the quality of your products and services. Price too low, and customers might question your quality. Price appropriately, and you communicate confidence in the value you provide. As an industry, we need to move away from the mindset that the lowest price wins. Instead, we should focus on delivering and effectively communicating value. This shift will not only lead to better margins and more sustainable businesses but will also elevate the perceived value of our entire industry in the eyes of consumers. In conclusion, the path to profitability in the window and
door installation business isn’t about being the cheapest option. It’s about understanding your costs, recognising the unique value you provide, and setting prices that reflect this while ensuring profitability. By implementing a thoughtful, value-based pricing strategy, you can build a more sustainable business and contribute to a healthier, more robust industry overall. The goal is not just to win business, but to win profitable business that supports the longterm success of your company and our industry as a whole. Let’s work together to raise the bar, increase perceived value, and create a more sustainable future for the window and door industry. cleverbeanaccounting.co.uk/

made with Planitherm One tick all the boxes
The type of glass which is growing in its appeal as part of integral blind units is Planitherm One. This enhanced performance glass from Saint-Gobain gives Uni-Blinds integral blinds an extra solar control functionality, enabling installers to gain an edge over their competitors who are selling on the benefits of compliance-level thermal insulation alone.
As all Uni-Blinds are made to order by Morley Glass using ScreenLine systems, every unit can be tailored to meet the needs of the
Ian Short, managing director of Morley Glass said: “New windows and doors can instantly transform a home by making it warmer, quieter and more visually appealing. And that’s a powerful selling point, even with a compliance-level glass, given how many homeowners are seeking a warmer home while

at the same time reducing their energy bills during winter. But what about offering even higher levels of thermal insulation and providing a solution that also helps our homes to stay cool when the sun is strong and temperatures are higher? “This is where Planitherm One comes into its element. Firstly, it offers a higher level of thermal insulation with a U-value of just 1.0 W/m2K – as the name suggests – compared to 1.4 in a double glazed unit made using Planitherm Total Plus. That’s a superior level of insulation that we would expect to see specified in eco-homes which are usually built to very high levels of energy efficiency. “Secondly, Planitherm One provides greater solar control because of its low g-value, and this is why it is effective at reducing
the potential for overheating in a property.” Better solar control can mean greater temperature stability inside our homes, resulting in improved comfort all year round. Feedback from many Uni-Blinds installers is that integral blinds combined with Planitherm One can be a winning combination for homeowners, who often see the additional premium for improved thermal insulation, combined with solar control, as excellent lifetime value in the context of their overall spend on their window or door project. Ian adds: “The difference that Planitherm One can make in terms of maintaining a stable temperature inside our homes is one of the reasons why we often recommend it for integral blind
units intended for larger windows and doors, especially on sunnier aspects. It further enhances our integral blinds which already give homeowners the ability to control the amount of heat and sunlight entering their home with ease. “Specify Uni-Blinds integral blinds with Planitherm One and your customers get dual benefits, whether the blinds are open or closed. The glass works in the background, insulating the home against excessive heat when the sun is strong and, thanks to the low U-value of IGUs created using Planitherm One, ensuring more heat is retained inside the home in winter.” To find out more about the different types of integral blinds available in the Uni-Blinds range visit www.morleyglass.co.uk WINDOW NEWS | MAY 2025 77

ERA adds new finish to TouchKey range ERA, one of the UK’s leading home security and fenestration component providers, is launching its smart door security solution, TouchKey, in an all-new architectural black finish. Already available in stylish chrome and graphite, TouchKey combines a smarter security door handle, an auto-firing multi-point lock, and an anti-bump security cylinder for maximum customer convenience and peace of mind, says the company. While the architectural black finish is new to the TouchKey range, the solution boasts all the same benefits of the original and remains the only system of its kind to combine five different entry methods into a single door handle, claims the company. authentication for residential door access, TouchKey, which is suitable for fabrication with composite and timber entrance doors, offers access via fingerprint, the ERA Smart Home app, geolocation technology, voice command, and manual key override.
According to the company, TouchKey combines dynamic smart technology with mechanical hardware, delivering both convenience and security. Its two hook multi-point lock has a central deadbolt that fires six locking points when engaged, automatically securing the door upon closing. The anti-bump cylinder works in conjunction with the smarter handle and multi-point lock for ease of application and resistance against forced entry. Additionally, for extra endurance, the handle’s forged steel backplate and hardened plates prevent potential intruders from removing it to manipulate the lock, claims the company
Featuring advanced biometric fingerprint technology, up to 50 different fingerprints can be stored directly within the handle to provide users with instant access to a property.
For easy operation, an ergonomically designed extended thumbturn with light torque ensures that all locking points are simultaneously retracted. With this, upon leaving the property, the door closes automatically and locks behind the user.
When used with the ERA Smart Home app, TouchKey can be unlocked with a single touch locally, or remotely using the TouchKey Communications Module and the addition of an ERA Smart Hub. Digital e-keys with timed access can also be assigned to individuals, such as family,
TouchKey has been independently tested to BSI’s Smart Residential Locking Device standard. Developed in conjunction with ERA, the standard combines the BSI Internet of Things (IoT) Kitemark with TS 621 for mechanical security with smart locking. www.eraeverywhere.com

Mark Atkinson, sales director at Hurst
Rewriting the rules: How Hurst developed the UK’s
first fully PAS24 accredited PVC-U glazed panel door For years, the PVC-U panel door has been a staple in the entrance door market – dependable, affordable and widely used. But as security requirements have tightened, panel doors have found 86 WINDOW NEWS | MAY 2025
themselves sidelined in favour of composite alternatives. That is, until now. Hurst Doors has launched Securicore, a next-generation PVC-U door panel that not
only meets PAS24 standards but does so without sacrificing affordability, thermal performance or aesthetics. Developed over two years and tested as part of a fully fabricated doorset, Securicore represents a breakthrough in both product design and market opportunity. “The market perception of panel doors is still stuck in the past,” says Mark Atkinson, sales director at Hurst. “People think of climbing roses, Georgian bars and mahogany woodgrain – but the market’s moved on. Security and thermal values remain key, but so too are cost-effectiveness
PRODUCT NEWS overcome it, we had to look at alternative reinforcement solutions that wouldn’t compromise the panel’s weight, cost or thermal efficiency.” A breakthrough came when the team identified a PVC-U compound in a 4mm option that delivered on security without impacting thermal values or increasing panel thickness. “That allowed us to stick with the industry-standard 28mm format but still have the flexibility to accommodate other thicknesses,” says Mark. The result? A product that not only passed but exceeded PAS24 requirements – even as a half-glazed panel, thanks in part to a specially developed and exclusive glazing clip system. Future-proofing for a changing market
and contemporary styling. Securicore gives us all of that in one solution.” The achievement is no small feat. The PAS24 standard includes a range of stringent tests – including soft and hard body impacts, cut-through attempts, and aggressive manipulation tests – all simulating real-world attempts at forced entry and long-term wear. These tests have historically been the downfall of PVC-U panels, particularly in glazed formats. “The cut-through test was always the Achilles’ heel for PVC-U,” says Mark. “To
While PAS24 compliance is currently mandatory in new build and social housing sectors, updates to Document Q of Building Regulations may soon extend those requirements into home improvement and replacement markets. For Hurst, this shift was a key motivation behind Securicore’s development. “We saw it coming,” Mark explains. “Two years ago, we sat down and made the decision to invest heavily in panel R&D. Panels are still a core part of our business – we produce over 3,500 a week – and we weren’t prepared to lose that share because the legislation changed. Securicore puts our customers ahead of the curve.” What sets the panel apart, aside from its PAS24 credentials, is its versatility. It is available in various thicknesses and compatible with almost all of Hurst’s existing panel door range – including seven new styles developed to reflect more
contemporary tastes. Colours like pebble grey, anthracite smooth and agate grey are already seeing strong uptake, and the new designs mirror the look of composite doors while retaining the ease-of-fit benefits that make PVC-U panels popular with installers. Thermally, it performs just as well as many alternatives on the market. With U-values as low as 1.3w/m²K in large glazed formats – and even lower for solid panels. Importantly, Hurst is offering full support to fabricators who wish to produce a PAS24 accredited doorset using the panel. “We didn’t just test the panel on its own,” Mark says. “We tested it as part of a complete doorset – standard sash, standard outer – so fabricators can be confident that if they follow our model, they can achieve full PAS24 compliance too.” For installers, it opens up a powerful new proposition. “It’s a fit-and-forget product with a premium security message,” adds Mark. “That’s a big win when you’re competing in the replacement or new-build markets.” Securicore isn’t just a product upgrade – it’s a repositioning of the entire PVC-U panel category. It challenges outdated perceptions, addresses current and future compliance requirements, and gives Hurst customers the tools to compete across a wider range of applications – from social housing to higher-end private builds. “This is a genuine industry first,” concludes Mark. “There’s nothing else quite like it on the market – and for our customers, it’s a real chance to lead from the front.” www.hurstdoors.co.uk WINDOW NEWS | MAY 2025 87

Adding summer
living to a door
portfolio with Apeer stable doors
Responding to the growing needs for lifestyle doors in busy homes where children and pets need to be contained even on the most glorious of summer days, installers may want to offer a stable door. Apeer’s stable door range is the perfect solution for busy homes looking to combine practicality with security and good looks. As summer approaches, the doors allow homeowners to open up for fresh air, while keeping pets and children safe on the inside. Crucially, according to Apeer, the stable door’s unique design guarantees that there are no leaks when closed, and no compromise to its overall security. All the stable doors in the Apeer range are fitted with high security, multi point locking system featuring two rollers, two hooks, two deadbolts and a latch, securing both the top and bottom sections. “There’s an emotion around stable doors that feeds into that love of the country, when you can open up the door and let the fresh air in safe in the knowledge that no little feet (animal or human) are going to be escaping down the front or back path,” said Apeer’s managing director Asa McGillian. “Although considered a ‘lifestyle’ product, they are proving to be extremely popular, particularly in more rural areas, and are the perfect addition to the range of front and back door options an installer can offer when selling to a homeowner.” Other than being manufactured in two separate sections, Apeer’s stable door range offers the same market leading features than its standard composite door range. A double sealed rebate and 70mm polyurethane core guarantees its thermal efficiency when the door is fully closed, says the company. https://www.apeer.co.uk/

PST delivers

for Guardian
Since 2015, Guardian Building Systems has partnered with Production Software Technology to improve efficiency and support its extensive network of 20 fabricators across the UK. According to Guardian, they first discovered PST’s VS software through its parent company, Celuplast, which had already seen the benefits of using it for other systems. Impressed by its performance, Guardian adopted VS to streamline the fabrication of the Guardian Warm Roof. More recently, Guardian has expanded its use of PST’s software, incorporating vsHome to better connect with homeowners through the installer network. Virtual Shopfloor (VS) is a powerful, all-in-one manufacturing software 90 WINDOW NEWS | MAY 2025
solution that enables fabricators to manage their entire process from production to sales and surveying. Meanwhile, vsHome is a user-friendly sales and surveying software designed with retailers in mind. It allows them to create detailed 3D visualisations, generate quotes, and seamlessly share the designs they create with the homeowner.
Before implementing VS, Guardian faced significant challenges with its previous software provider. The system struggled to meet the demands of the 20 fabricators, and inadequate support led to further problems. PST provided a game-changing solution for Guardian with its fabricatorfocused software, reducing fabrication times, simplifying complex process, and introducing
automation that cut costs and improved accuracy. Beyond its technical strengths, PST’s exceptional customer support has been a key factor in the partnership’s success. “From both a technical and general perspective, the team is very responsive and quick to act. Any issues are resolved promptly, and there’s always a smooth process when new features are implemented,” said Danny Hill, General Manager & Group Head of Marketing at Guardian. Ease of use has also been a major advantage. Guardian recently onboarded a new team member who quickly became proficient with VS, highlighting the intuitive nature of the software. With many of Guardian’s customers relying on the system, it’s user-friendly interface ensures fabricators can work efficiently with minimal learning time. According to Guardian, the flexibility of PST’s software has contributed to the company’s continued growth. With the ability to customise and add new features as needed, the software evolves alongside Guardian’s expanding product range, helping their network of fabricators stay ahead in an everchanging industry.

PRODUCT NEWS makes it ideal for applications where minimal protrusion is required without compromising the screw’s holding power, as well as in mechanical assemblies where a decorative or streamlined appearance is sought. Above: Two options are now available for Rapierstar’s Starfix masonry fixings – the yellow zinc-passivated countersunk-head FFT and the new bright silver button-head PFT.
New Rapierstar Starfix PFT fixing
sets new standards for installation ease and quality A new button-head version of Rapierstar’s popular Starfix masonry fixing, which incorporates a unique combination of advanced design features, enables PVCu and timber window and door installers to work faster and achieve a superior-quality installation more easily, claims the company. Available in the most commonly used frame fixing sizes, the new Starfix PFT is an evolution of the long-established FFT, a marketleading plug-free screw designed as an effective through-anchor, which interlocks directly into masonry and typical concrete materials after drilling a suitable pilot hole. Developed to help installers complete window and door frame installation more efficiently, securely and safely, and in a way that maximises aesthetics. Like the FFT, the new PFT fixing features a 7.5mm nominal diameter twin hi-lo thread, offering multiple benefits. The high threads 92 WINDOW NEWS | MAY 2025
aggressively cut into the substrate to maximise grip and holding power, while the lower threads reduce insertion torque and facilitate dust clearance from the tapped thread path. According to Rapierstar, this combination ensures improved load distribution, minimised radial cracking, and enhanced installation efficiency. The key innovations have occurred in the PFT’s head design, however. The PFT is equipped with a Torx socket button head, offering a low-profile finish, which is different from the FFT’s partial countersunk head. PFT’s button head has a flat underside, giving it a broad bearing surface to distribute the load evenly across the material surface. This is said to be really important as it reduces the likelihood of the screw pulling through softer materials like wood. The low-profile head design maximises aesthetics, too. This
In addition, as Starfix PFT is manufactured from high-grade carbon steel with a corrosionresistant clear zinc protective coating, the fixing heads have an attractive silver appearance which means there is no need to use plastic cover caps. Another standout feature of both Starfix options is the T30 Torx drive. This drive system is designed to ensure optimal torque transfer from the driver to the screw, minimising cam-out and providing a secure fit during installation. This translates to easier and faster installations with less chance of damage to the screw head. The Torx drive also prevents rounding off of the screw head, allowing for repeated use and reducing wear on the bit, thus extending tool life – a key consideration for any contractor or maintenance team. Andy Holland, technical & marketing manager at Rapierstar, said: “The Starfix PFT button head masonry screw is potentially a game-changer for building construction and maintenance. When we launched Starfix FFT several years ago, it helped to revolutionise the way window and door frames were installed in that it enabled installers to move away from pre-installation fixings that needed a plug or sleeve. PFT is our latest evolution and is designed to offer even more advantages. “The specialist fastener knowledge we have within our team, plus the design and testing technology available in our technical development centre at our HQ in Cheshire, enables us to continuously innovate and respond

A spotlight
on safety When it comes to the world of glass and glazing, where heavy materials and precision intersect, safety cannot be an afterthought. Bohle’s national sales manager, Paul Miller, explains why Veribor has become a valued safety staple for glass handlers across the UK.
According to the Health and Safety Executive’s latest figures, there were over 60,000 non-fatal injuries reported in the UK construction industry over the last two years, with a significant proportion linked to manual handling and equipment failure. When working with glass – a material that is not only fragile but 94 WINDOW NEWS | MAY 2025
often extremely heavy – the stakes are even higher. A single pane destined for architectural use, can easily weigh upwards of 100kg in weight. Such mass, especially when lifted at height or manoeuvred in confined spaces, presents a real threat of crush injuries, or worse, if the equipment used fails.
That’s why the Veribor range of suction lifters from Bohle has become an indispensable tool for glazing professionals across the UK and beyond. Designed to deliver not just performance but peace of mind, Veribor suction lifters are built with a minimum 2:1 safety margin, ensuring they comfortably outperform their rated capacities in real-world conditions. The Veribor 601 and 601G, for example, offer load capacities up to 120kg and are equipped with high-visibility vacuum gauges – an essential feature that allows users to monitor pressure in real time and react before a failure can occur. “Safety isn’t just a benefit of Veribor: it’s the foundation,” says Paul Miller, national sales manager at Bohle. “Our customers are lifting extremely heavy, valuable materials, often in challenging site
PRODUCT NEWS conditions. They need to know that the equipment they’re using will perform every time. That’s what Veribor delivers.” Veribor also carries TÜV GS certification, awarded only after passing stringent independent testing in line with the German Product Safety Act – one of the most respected safety standards in Europe. For companies whose teams are increasingly being asked to install oversized or tripleglazed panels, where weight and handling complexity are at their peak, this certification offers vital reassurance. “Increasingly, we’re seeing projects involving larger panes, often with bonded units or triple glazing. It’s not just about strength, it’s about having the confidence that your gear won’t let you down mid-lift,” Paul adds. “Veribor gives our customers that confidence.” In today’s fast-paced construction landscape, where speed is essential but so is safety, having equipment that meets both demands is no longer a luxury – it’s a necessity. With the Home Office and industry regulators putting greater emphasis on workplace safety compliance, especially around lifting equipment, businesses are under pressure to demonstrate due diligence. Veribor supports that requirement with products that are tested, proven, and trusted. When weighed against the potential cost of an injury – not just in terms of lost time or insurance claims, but in real human impact – the investment in quality lifting equipment becomes not just justified, but essential. With Veribor, companies aren’t just lifting glass, they’re lifting standards. www.bohle.com
Business Pilot
opens thousands more
integration possibilities with latest Open API development
Business Pilot, the industryleading CRM and business management system for installers, now has almost unlimited integration opportunities thanks further development of its Open API. The latest system development allows any third-party software with an API to directly link with the Business Pilot system, including manufacturing and supplier ordering platforms, VOIP systems, quoting tools and customer communication platforms, including WhatsApp & SMS. “This upgrade to our Open API is a game-changer,” said Ryan Schofield, technical director at Business Pilot. “We already have several direct integrations with commonly used platforms such as Tommy Trinder, Windowlink and Xero. But with this Open API upgrade, virtually any other system with an API can integrate with our system, giving Business Pilot users the option to connect their preferred software.
“Data transfers happen in real-time, as opposed to at scheduled intervals, reducing delays and ensuring seamless automation between Business Pilot and other software tools. And we have increased the number of ‘endpoints’ available via the API to enable the updating of POs, invoices, service calls, quote information, sales values, and quote documents by connected tools.” For any businesses who do not have access to an experienced developer to support Open API set-up, they can use Zapier, a software bridge platform that simplifies the integration process. “Installers can now automate tasks in ways they never thought possible. We encourage everyone to visit our stand, experience the system in action, and discover how they can take their business to the next level,” Ryan concluded. www.businesspilot.co.uk WINDOW NEWS | MAY 2025 95
MACHINERY When it comes to investing in a new CNC or saw, second hand really doesn’t have to mean second best. Our inhouse machine refurbishment programme offers fabricators a practical and cost-effective route to Emmegi machinery ownership – and has the advantage that it is a sustainable option as well. When we take a machine in for refurbishment, it undergoes a complete overhaul by our engineering team that takes anything from 4 to 6 weeks. We start with a thorough clean and a full visual and mechanical inspection, before we even connect the power and check the working condition.

Together, we are on a journey towards net zero carbon, and, alongside things like 100% renewable energy at our European plants and sustainable packaging, reducing waste is central to that.

latest Emmegi software, so they can update and upgrade older machines so that when they are sold, they are arguably even better than they were when they are new. To give a couple of examples. We recently supplied a refurbished Phantomatic T3A machine to PAS (Premier Aluminium Solutions) in Wallasey to replace a trusty 98 WINDOW NEWS | MAY 2025
Phantomatic T4 that had given them many years of reliable service. We upgraded the original software on the T3A so that it can now accommodate an external software link and a bar code scanner for the first time. And for Kyrus in Telford we supplied a fully refurbished Radial double mitre saw to give them the additional cutting capability they needed, and saved them from having to buy a brand new machine.
The good news is that by refurbishing rather than scrapping machines, Emmegi (UK) saved more than 8 tonnes of material waste last year – and gave all those saws and CNCs a new lease of life. Because Emmegi products are built to last, and fabricators with space often keep their existing machines for additional capacity when they buy a new one, we don’t have a huge supply of previously used machines, but our sales team always have up to date information on incoming stock and can advise on pricing and availability. Commercial success for
Sternfenster customer
Quality products combined with strong customer support make all the difference when it comes to a successful installation project, says Sternfenster’s long-standing partner, Sereco Windows. We report.
“We haven’t seen quality like this anywhere else in industry to be honest,” says Steven Sanderson, director at Chesterfield-based installer, Sereco Windows. Offering premium windows, doors and conservatories in PVC-U, aluminium and timber, the Derbyshire business recently partnered with Sternfenster on a local commercial project – and was highly impressed with both products and service. Fitting Smarts’ Alitherm 400 window system, manufactured by the Lincolnshire-based fabricator, Steven describes the product as “absolutely excellent”. “Perfect glass, perfect units,” he says. “Not your usual marks and scratches. We’ve been working with Sternfenster for a good seven or eight years now and right from the start, they’ve been very keen on quality. “You can clearly see the attention to detail, just from the way they deliver to site. Everything is
shrink-wrapped to perfection to protect the products in transit. “That really resonates with me, because I’ve been doing this for close to 40 years and I know how important quality is to success in this industry.” Achieving a Window Energy Rating of ‘A’ with a double-glazed unit, and a U-value of 1.2W/ m2K triple glazed, Sternfenster’s Alitherm 400 casement window from Smarts is well-suited to both refurb and newbuild projects. Also available as a flush casement for a sleek and contemporary look, the 70mm thermally broken aluminium window achieves BS6375-1 for weather performance, and can also meet PAS24 or Secured by Design requirements thanks to optional sash claw locks. “We carried out a survey beforehand and Sternfenster was extremely helpful with that process. We deal with a few companies, but Sternfenster is the only one to double-check everything in such a diligent way. “Someone from their team will give me a ring and say, ‘What about this?’ ‘What about that?’ ‘Have you checked this?’ And sometimes I think, ‘Oh, yeah, I’ve missed that!’. Sternfenster really does give you that strong technical assistance and specification support.” With high material costs and ongoing economic uncertainty impacting businesses across the sector, Sternfenster’s customercentric approach continues to offset these challenging market conditions for its trade partners. “Margins are extremely tight in the current climate, and we can’t afford to make mistakes,” adds Steven. “At the same time our customer’s expectations are getting higher, and that’s an added pressure. “Manufacturing is where it all starts for us and if a fault arises on the factory floor, or during delivery, the issues that fault creates are passed on to us on site. “But we don’t have to worry about that with Sternfenster. There’s so much care and attention to detail in everything they do, we know we can rely on them to consistently deliver. That really pays dividends for us, and our customers.” www.sternfenster.com WINDOW NEWS | MAY 2025 103

Alunet Systems unveils new Aluna+ Range Alunet Systems held a new product event that brought together more than 200 fabricators, installers, and industry press at Hangar 1 at RAF Cosford on April 3rd. The day served as a platform for innovation, unveiling a new window range under the Aluna+ brand. The Alunet team presented insights into the next generation of Aluna, highlighting several core features that distinguish Aluna+ from other products currently available on the market. According to Alunet Systems, the “+” symbol represents more than just product development; it reflects the company’s refreshed culture and its focus on customer-centric design, development, marketing, and sales. Steve Stone, director at A&B Glass said of the event: “Exciting times 110 WINDOW NEWS | MAY 2025

It is what I class as the perfect ‘Old School Business Model’ – they answer the phones, listen and deliver! “It is refreshing to work alongside a team that is not afraid to push new boundaries within the aluminium market and understand the needs of their customers.” Chris Armes, technical & design director at Alunet Systems describes how vital this forum was: “Having a small number of
existing core partners effectively join the team on our design journey really accelerated the pace of development and launch, taking what historically takes years down to months through the confronting of opinion, tackling roadblocks in concept stage making them easier to change, and debating solutions through the eyes of the people that matter the most, the fabricators.” The system features slim sightlines as standard and includes casement, flush, and tilt-turn options. The new 75mm window system is described by Alunet as suitable for both replacement and new build markets. Compliant with Building Regulations, Aluna+ offers thermal efficiency managed through engineered polyamide thermal breaks. Alunet states that using bespoke low lambda polyamide minimizes the risks associated with materials like PVC, which have higher coefficients of thermal expansion. A point that clearly resonated with the fabricators who attended the
EVENTS Chris continues: “We wanted to ensure that Aluna+ resonated with existing and potentially new partners but also, we wanted to really change the way aluminium is designed and driven through fabricators. We believe our product is luxury, value driven and full of opportunity for our customers to make profit, in designing the system to have less collective parts we are making it far more cost efficient in labour time, stock holding and manufacturing. launch event is that performance that beats legislation is delivered using standard 1.2 double glazed units. Alunet Systems says it has again put their fabricators first by designing the performance directly into the product and therefore lowering the cost of the required glass unit. This, the company believes, is handing back value to the fabricator and in doing so providing 20% more light to the end user. According to Alunet Systems, Aluna+ delivers more than thermal performance; the entire
system, including a patentpending universal sash/transom profile, is designed with over 30% fewer parts. This reduction in components allows fabricators to maximize manufacturing space and efficiencies, with less capital tied up in stock. Modular cills and ancillaries are another key feature, enhancing thermal performance and reducing stock requirements. Alunet Systems claims that Aluna+ reduces fabrication waste by over 5%, further adding value to the product suite.
Phil Rotheram, group commercial director at Alunet System agrees: “Aluna+ will redefine the future of fabrication. Efficiency gains in time, ease, stock holding and space will help support our fabricators and help generate better returns on their investments with us. With U-Value performance beyond legislation, one universal cleat and one punch we are maximising the earnings potential per unit for our customer. What we have with Aluna+ is a revolution in approach and a significant step change in our product designs and services” Chris Armes concludes: “We as a team believe that our fabricator partners deserve only the very best. Our recently launched new range dramatically enhances the already impressive whole house Aluna range, our new designs will be sure to grab the market’s attention. The best just got even better, and our fabricator partners anticipation is already building for what promises to be a journey of significant product innovation. This approach has enabled it to blaze a trail where others have lost momentum, says the company. Roger Hartshorn, Garnalex’s CEO, said: “It is a privilege and an honour to be able to share the news that Garnalex has won the prestigious King’s Award for Innovation. The fenestration industry has always been a competitive industry, where accolades such as this make a real difference.”
Garnalex can officially announce it has received a coveted King’s Award for Innovation 2025 for its Sheerline aluminium windows and door range. With only 46 businesses being recognised in the innovation category this year, it is testament to how game changing the Sheerline system has been, according to the company. This award reflects the significant contribution and advances the company has made within the fenestration industry. Although Sheerline was launched during the global pandemic, the challenging external landscape has not stopped it from achieving

Designed specifically for company directors and business owners – from sole traders to multinationals – the FREE course tackles a critical knowledge gap around compliance with standards and legislation, including the Machinery Directive. It’s aimed at those in senior positions who might not otherwise attend technical training but still hold legal accountability for safety and performance in the field. Said ADSA managing director Ken Price: “There was a disconnect – technicians were being enrolled on our two-day training course which brought them up to speed with the latest requirements but we found that their company directors were reluctant or didn’t have the time to attend the same courses. This led to a knowledge gap of the legal framework their teams were working within. This course closes
that gap – not by teaching people how to run a business but by highlighting what their duty of care really looks like in this industry.” Delivered online through the ADSA Academy, the interactive course includes video content featuring members of the ADSA team, knowledge checks and a final assessment. It covers the legal landscape, relevant standards and regulations, building compliance, risk assessment and maintenance obligations. The course is available to all ADSA members and goes live next month (June 2025), following internal testing by the ADSA executive team. Registration is required to undertake the course to ensure proper allocation and monitoring of participation. He added: “This isn’t just CPD. It’s about raising the bar across the industry and making sure every director is speaking the same language as their technicians – legally, safely and competently.” To register for the course, phone: 01827 216136 WINDOW NEWS | MAY 2025 117
