According to Eurocell, the acquisition of Alunet Group, which includes four innovative, fast growing home improvement brands, further strengthens Eurocell’s technical and product knowledge, providing fabricators, installers and specifiers with ‘unrivalled’ support and improved material choice. Planning on pause: planning approvals dip
21% as industry awaits bill
service sector. Early 2025 reflects the same trends, with ongoing manufacturing decline and sluggish services. Industrial Sector: Short-term gains, long-term uncertainty Industrial construction stands out as a rare bright spot, with project starts rising 16% year-on-year and warehousing/logistics soaring 70% to £872M, now accounting for 48% of all starts. However, this growth may not be sustainable, as detailed planning approvals for industrial projects have fallen 20% compared to last year. Without a consistent pipeline of approved projects, the sector’s momentum could swiftly fade in 2025. The Planning and Infrastructure Bill: A potential turning point?
Glenigan, one of the construction industry’s leading insight and intelligence experts, has released the March 2025 edition of its Construction Review. The Review focuses on the three months to the end of February 2025, covering all major (>£100m) and underlying (<£100m) projects, with all underlying figures seasonally adjusted. It’s a report which provides a detailed and comprehensive analysis of year-on-year construction data, giving built environment professionals a unique insight into sector performance over the last 12 months. Major projects dry up, stifling pipeline growth The construction sector is facing a 32% year-on-year drop in projectstart values, driven by a decline in major projects and weak activity in underlying ones. Despite a 35% increase in major contract awards, the overall downturn continues
due to a drop in smaller awards and planning approvals, signalling a continued decline in both major and smaller starts in the near term. The freeze on major project starts, with only a few £100M+ developments getting underway, has led to a 39% decline in project starts. This slowdown is due to delays in planning approvals, higher borrowing costs, and weaker business confidence, prompting developers to delay investment until the economic outlook improves.
The recently introduced Planning and Infrastructure Bill aims to address the industry’s challenges by streamlining planning approvals and fast-tracking key infrastructure projects. With detailed planning approvals down 21% annually, the bill seeks to boost housing delivery and accelerate decision-making at the local council level.
The impact of these challenges is also evident in smaller projects, with a 17% year-on-year decrease in underlying project-starts. Meanwhile, main contract awards have fallen by 14% annually, indicating that even approved projects are struggling to move forward to construction.
“The sharp drop in project starts reflects the ongoing struggles within the industry,” says Allan Wilen, economics director at Glenigan. “While the surge in major contract awards suggests future activity, real sustained growth hinges on improved approvals. The proposed Planning and Infrastructure Bill has the potential to be transformative, yet its impact will be determined by how swiftly and effectively it is implemented. A key challenge lies in uncertainty over local authorities’ capacity to deliver reforms at the pace needed to unlock stalled projects.”
The UK economy saw minimal growth of 0.1% in Q4 2024, impacted by weak industrial production and a stagnant

Garnalex reveals plans for the future as planning permission granted Garnalex, currently based in Nether Heage, Derbyshire, has secured planning permission for a purpose-built development near junction 27 of the M1. The facility will enable the company to prioritise sustainable growth, increase jobs, and improve transport links. As well as moving all current employees, the project will create new jobs and long-term employment opportunities for the area, according to the company. Work is due to commence in the spring and will take between 18 months to two years to complete. The development has been split into two phases. The first phase will see a new manufacturing site being built to cater for the existing Sheerline business, enabling the company to continue its everyday operations without disruption to service. 8 WINDOW NEWS | APRIL 2025
Phase two of the development allows for future expansion of the site, helping to keep jobs in the Ashfield district long-term. The company says, the fact that this additional expansion was applied for at the same time as phase one reflects the company’s ambitious yet sustainable growth plans. Aside from ensuring the building is as green and sustainable as possible, it will be built with a façade that blends in with its natural surroundings, and there will be wildlife corridors and tree planting to mitigate the impact of the development. As well as environmental considerations, care is also being taken to support the road network around the site to ensure easy access to the M1 while keeping lorries out of residential areas. A sustainable cycleway/
footway will be built alongside the development as part of phase two. After successfully launching two fenestration businesses in Derbyshire, Roger Hartshorn founded Garnalex in 2018 as a solution to the UK’s reliance on imported aluminium. In 2024, it was recognised as the ninth fastest growing company on the Oresa Growth Index. Sheerline, Garnalex’s aluminium window and door systems house, was launched in 2020. It has gained industry-wide recognition by challenging what is expected from an aluminium company, achieving awards for both its products and people, says the company. All this success has come in a relatively short time despite challenging external circumstances including the Covid pandemic and subsequent cost of living crisis. This not only shows the company has got the formula right, but that there is an appetite for UK aluminium, claims the company. www.sheerline.com

Builders Merchant’s

-2.3% and flat volume sales The latest Builders Merchant Building Index (BMBI) report, published in March, shows builders’ merchants’ value sales in January down -2.3% compared to the same month in 2024. Volume sales were flat (+0.0%) and prices slipped -2.3%.There was no difference in trading days.
Year-on-year, only two categories sold more – Services (+3.5%) and Tools (+2.4%). Although down, some categories performed better than Total Merchants including Heavy Building Materials (-1.2%), Ironmongery (-1.5%) and Workwear & Safetywear (-1.9%). Kitchens & Bathrooms (-4.2%), Timber & Joinery Products (-4.4%) and Decorating (-6.3%) were the weakest categories. 10 WINDOW NEWS | APRIL 2025
Value sales in January were +33.9% up on the previous month, December 2024. Volume sales climbed +34.3% and prices were slightly lower (-0.3%). All categories sold more and seven outperformed Total Builders Merchants. These were Miscellaneous (+38.9%), Ironmongery (+38.5%), Workwear & Safetywear (+38.2%), Timber & Joinery Products (+37.4%), Heavy Building Materials (+35.5%), Plumbing Heating & Electrical (+35.1%) and Kitchens & Bathrooms (+34.1%). However, with five additional trading days in January, like-for-like value sales (which take trading day differences into account) were up +3.5%. In the period February 2024 to January 2025, total value
sales were -4.1% down on the previous 12-month period (February 2023 to January 2024). Volume sales fell -4.1% and prices were flat (+0.0%). Five of the twelve categories sold more with Workwear & Safetywear (+8.9%) up the most, followed by Tools (+6.5%) and Services (+3.2%). The two largest categories Timber & Joinery Products (-6.3%) and Heavy Building Materials (-5.3%) declined more than Total Merchants. Renewables & Water Saving (-22.2%) was weakest. With two extra trading days this period, like-for-like value sales were -4.9% lower. Mike Rigby, managing director of MRA Research which produces the BMBI report says: “January wasn’t the strong start builders’ merchants and building materials suppliers been hoping for. Bad weather played its part, but in large part politics had a bigger influence than rain stopping play. “The blitzkrieg of uncertainty created by President Trump’s alarming tariff wars and his abruptly shifting alliances and
TRADE NEWS transactional interventions, coming on top of the Labour Government’s missteps severely rattled consumers’ confidence. That dropped sharply across all metrics in January according to NIQ GfK’s long running consumer confidence index. While the index rallied in February, consumers’ view of the general economic situation for the coming 12 months (-31) is behind where it was the year before (-24), and way behind the improvement in confidence that was building over much of 2024. Little wonder markets are subdued with projects on pause or postponed for better times. Homeowners who are concerned about the future don’t stretch themselves to buy new properties or spend as much on major home improvement projects. “Trump’s destabilising presence is reverberating across global stock markets and economies and starting to disrupt material supplies and costs as the roll out of new tariffs plays out. At home, the government is pushing its promised planning reforms. That’s good for the building industry, but it’s not the only brake on recovery and growth. Although the Builders Merchant Federation is leading an industry campaign to attract new workers into the building materials sector, the Government has yet to engage with the very large shortage of skilled workers required to build its targeted 1.5 million new homes in the next five years. “UK construction and its supply chains have become resilient and got used to rolling with the punches after five years of considerable turbulence. Now, Britain’s Builders’ Merchants can prepare for forecast opportunities to grow more steadily in the second half of 2025.” www.bmbi.co.uk
Genius PVC Trade Frames
expands fleet with vehicle investment
Norwich-based fabricator Genius PVC Trade Frames has announced a significant expansion to its delivery fleet with the addition of a new 18-tonne XL van, with a second identical vehicle already on order. According to the company, the strategic investment represents the latest chapter in the company’s ongoing growth story and commitment to enhancing its nationwide service capabilities, with its transport arm going from strength to strength and Jason Morton rapidly approaching his one-year anniversary as dedicated transport manager. Operations director Lee Dickinson explained: “This new addition to our fleet is a game-changer for our logistics operations. With our customer base expanding nationwide, we needed to ensure our delivery capabilities could keep pace with production. “These new 18-tonne vehicles will allow us to deliver greater efficiency and reliability than ever before. We pride ourselves on supplying our
customers with what they want in just five days and this investment will help us continue to deliver that.” The new vehicles complement the fabricator’s recent £3.2 million investment in state-ofthe-art machinery, including a new BAZ Tandem Schirmer cutting centre and a Rotox Horizontal 8 Head Welding and Cleaning Line, and a factory expansion. The investments support Genius in expanding its product range to include Deceuninck systems, which complement its already established Kömmerling range. “This investment comes at a pivotal time for Genius, as we continue to build on the momentum generated by our expansion, and expanding our range has already increased demand,” added Lee. “We are always looking for ways to enhance our service and support our clients better and we recognise that excellence in production must be matched by excellent supply.” www.geniuspvc.com WINDOW NEWS | APRIL 2025 11

Glazerite Group managing director Rob Brearley explains: “2025 is an important milestone for Glazerite, and we are keen to celebrate it with those who have played an important role in our growth and the subsequent success of our installers. “When Glazerite was launched in the year 2000, it operated from a single premises in Northamptonshire, where a handful of staff fabricated just one Veka product, each driven by a desire to deliver high-quality windows to customers. “Today we’ve grown into a multisite, UK-wide operation, and have become one of Veka’s largest fabricators. Though we operate on a much bigger scale, providing

As the only UK fabricator to manufacture Veka’s full product range, Glazerite says it provides its installers with unrivalled products, support and opportunities for growth. Since Glazerite first opened its doors in the year 2000, its product offering has grown significantly to include a broad range of leading profile systems and over 20,000 product combinations now available to installers. Today, its nationwide footprint enables the fabricator to deliver to installers across the UK from its divisions in Wellingborough, Bolton, Bristol, Peterborough

It is about more than just products; our suppliers support installers with marketing materials and enhanced guarantees, which, combined with our own value-added solutions, transform the business ambitions of our customers. “The combined might of Glazerite’s supplier base has enabled us to grow our business to flex around the needs of our installers and deliver what their end customers want, whether that is a heritage window, a specific colour or the latest in composite doors or locking technology,” concludes Rob. “Given how far we’ve come in 25 years, we’re excited to see what the future will bring for Glazerite, our suppliers and our installers.” To celebrate 25 years in the industry, Glazerite is sponsoring the VIP Lounge at FIT Show, which takes place at the NEC Birmingham from 29th April – 1st May 2025. Qualicoat licences new powder systems By Chris Mansfield – Qualicoat Chair Powder is the fundamental and visible component in architectural powder coating, serving as the medium that provides durability, protection, and aesthetic appeal to architectural aluminium coated surfaces. Unlike liquid paint, powder coating uses a dry, electro-statically charged powder that adheres to metal or other conductive materials before being cured under heat to form a tough, uniform finish. The quality, composition, and particle size of the powder directly impact the coating’s adhesion, coverage, and resistance to chemicals and UV exposure. Additionally, powder coatings are environmentally friendly, as they contain no solvents or volatile organic compounds (VOCs), making them a sustainable and efficient choice for specifiers in construction projects. The latest powder coating formulations now include advanced resins, nanotechnology additives and bio-based 24 WINDOW NEWS | APRIL 2025
ingredients to enhance performance, durability, and sustainability. Modern formulations incorporate super-durable, known as Qualicoat Class 2, polyester resins for improved UV resistance, making them ideal for high-rise architectural applications. Low-temperature curing powders are now being been developed and launched to reduce energy consumption whilst maintaining strong adhesion and good mechanical properties. Additionally, antimicrobial and easy-clean coatings are gaining popularity, particularly in healthcare and food processing industries. Innovations in metallic and specialeffect powders allow for a wider range of finishes, from matte textures to high-gloss and chromelike effects. Qualicoat membership forms a vertically integrated supply chain, not only do powder coat applicators join the Association to demonstrate their ability to supply high quality coatings, but powder manufacturers and pre-treatment systems suppliers also make up membership of the Association.
For specifiers seeking to minimise their energy consumption during their sustainability journey towards a net-zero carbon future, Qualicoat Member Interpon have launched a new range of lowenergy (Low-E) powders, to their popular Class 1, D1036 range of powders and a Low-E range of powders to their Class 2, D2525 range of powders. Both new powder systems presents a step change in the Industry. These Low-E coating powders achieve an industry milestone by enabling curing at temperatures as low as 150°C while maintaining Qualicoat certification. Chris Mansfield Low-E curing powders empowers applicators and fabricators to achieve their sustainability objectives in two distinct ways: either by reducing curing temperatures by 30°C compared to conventional powder coatings or by optimising line speeds. In both scenarios, the product contributes to energy reduction, thereby lowering carbon emissions and enhancing production line efficiencies simultaneously. Notably, this innovation was conceived by AkzoNobel and is adaptable to various applications within the built environment, including building facades and windows, railings, and doors. It can be utilised in any scenario where an architectural-certified product is typically applied. This comes as architects and specifiers face increasing pressure to prioritise occupant safety by selecting materials that enhance fire protection. Introduced in response to the Grenfell tragedy, the CCPI is set up to raise standards in product information management and marketing, and aims to address critical shortcomings in construction product information that have historically contributed to building failures and is expected to meet the needs of the changing regulatory environment under the new Building Safety Regulator. A 5-year market analysis from Business Pilot 2024 data from the Business Pilot Barometer indicated a continued slowdown in the home improvement sector, with leads, sales, and installation registrations all experiencing year-on-year declines. However, when analysed over a five-year period, key performance indicators demonstrate a notable shift in consumer behaviour and overall demand that could be key to unlocking future growth. Data from Business Pilot generated between 2019 and 2024 highlights a 16% drop in average sales and a 22% reduction in leads over this period, reflecting the slower-moving market that the majority of installers will testify to. This is backed up by a wider waning of consumer interest in new window and door installations, with Google searches for glazingrelated terms decreasing by 5% over the same period. While these figures may raise concerns, Elton Boocock, managing director of 30 WINDOW NEWS | APRIL 2025
Business Pilot, suggests that the downturn is more reflective of post-Covid normalisation than outright market failure. “The market has contracted, but that’s only part of the story,” explains Elton. “What we’re seeing is a more considered purchasing process. Homeowners are taking longer to make decisions, gathering more information, and shopping around before committing. Lead volumes may be down, but the quality of those leads has improved in many cases.” This cooling-off in demand aligns closely with the broader UK housing market, which has experienced significant turbulence due to high mortgage rates and affordability challenges. Annual transaction volumes have remained below pre-pandemic levels – currently tracking at 6% lower than 2019 – reducing the need for renovation projects typically undertaken by new

homeowners. This is also exacerbated by a tempestuous economic climate post-Covid, with rising energy costs, interest rates, and costs of living, resulting in fewer people willing to commit to large-scale investments. Despite the overall decline in project volume, a notable trend has emerged – higher-value projects are becoming more common. Business Pilot’s data reveals an 84.5% increase in average order value, suggesting that while fewer people are undertaking renovations, those who do are prioritising premium products and long-term value.
VIEWPOINT like Business Pilot come in. We help companies work smarter by automating routine tasks, improving cash flow with faster payments, and giving realtime insights into business performance. The more efficiently you run, the better positioned you are to withstand market fluctuations.” Looking ahead, 2025 is expected to bring a potential home improvement resurgence, with 46% of homeowners planning renovation projects. According to research by Häfele, 13% are looking to upgrade their windows, while 15% are considering new doors.
This shift is particularly evident in product-specific trends, where PVC-U remains the most popular material of choice but is more vulnerable to economic shifts. Meanwhile, timber and aluminium products, which the data shows have longer lead times and lower conversion rates, continue to attract a niche but dedicated customer base. “Consumers today want value, not just the lowest price,” Elton explains. “That’s why we’re seeing an increase in order values. Homeowners aren’t necessarily buying more, but when they do invest, they’re choosing higherquality products that offer better energy efficiency and durability. “This is a key insight for installers; focusing on premium offerings and demonstrating long-term benefits can help drive higher-value sales, even in a quieter market.” However, rising costs remain a significant hurdle for the industry.
Inflation, material expenses, and increases in National Insurance Contributions (NICs) are eating into installer margins. The additional NIC burden alone could cost businesses up to £2,000 per employee per year, making it harder for companies to remain profitable. To counteract these pressures, operational efficiency has become a necessity. Business Pilot’s platform enables installation companies to streamline processes and reduce administrative overhead. Features such as automated Fensa registrations, integrated payment processing through Blink Payment, and real-time performance tracking allow businesses to operate more effectively without increasing costs. “Margins are under pressure, and businesses need to adapt,” Elton says. “That’s where tools
This outlook is supported by this year’s Business Pilot Barometers, which show signs of renewed consumer interest despite ongoing economic pressures. January saw a significant 116% increase in leads from December, with sales following a similar trend, rising from 29 in December to 48 in January. However, February saw a 15.7% dip in leads, indicating a natural stabilisation after the New Year surge. But with economic uncertainty still looming, success will depend on how well businesses position themselves to capitalise on this renewed demand. Installers who can align their sales strategies with consumer priorities – focusing on premium products, energy efficiency, and customer education – will be in the strongest position to thrive. “The key takeaway from 2024 is that the market isn’t dead – it’s evolving,” Elton concludes. “There’s still demand, but businesses need to be smarter about how they approach it. Those who focus on efficiency, high-value sales, and customerdriven strategies will come out ahead, regardless of broader economic challenges.” www.businesspilot.co.uk WINDOW NEWS | APRIL 2025 31

The secret to success in 2025? By Russell Yates, Managing Director, AluK
According to the most recent figures from the Made in Britain group, which represents UK based manufacturers, ‘Buy British’ sentiment was up 20% in 2024 compared with the year before. As a result, almost 6 in 10 businesses now prefer to buy UK manufactured products over imported ones. That’s obviously great news for businesses like AluK with our long and proud history of manufacturing here. We have our own 350,000 sq ft facility in Chepstow, South Wales, which isn’t just home to our manufacturing, with three dedicated thermal break lines, but also houses our market leading vertical paint line, vast product stockholding, an in32 WINDOW NEWS | APRIL 2025
house R&D centre and a UKAS accredited test rig. We employ over 150 here and make a significant contribution to the local and regional economy. Compare that with some of our competitors who import all their products, have only minimal UK stockholding, no UK-based testing, and a skeleton support staff, and it’s no surprise we’re seeing a steady increase in enquiries from fabricators and installers who want to partner with a business that can support their ambitions for growth. The stand out 6 in 10 figure comes from Made in Britain’s Buying British survey, which samples 1000 British

businesses annually about their buying habits; and the results indicate a growing shift in mentality post-Covid. Respondents to the 2024 survey said their prime motivator in buying British is support for the UK economy and jobs market (68%), but close behind is the environment (61%), with respondents citing sustainability as a key driver in procurement,
VIEWPOINT alongside social value. In fact, nearly half of British businesses say they now set specific procurement targets for UK-made goods, and the average target is 48% of all goods purchased – a huge 40% increase year on year. I would argue there’s much more to this shift than a patriotic resurgence – not least the underlying quality and traceability of many UK manufactured goods. Covid exposed the fragility and volatility of global supply chains in a way none of us could have expected, and that’s before you take into account Brexit, the Ukraine conflict and the return of President Trump and his threats of a trade war. Climate change is also playing into the arguments, with weather and natural disasters disrupting
transport routes and damaging infrastructure much more than previously. I do obviously acknowledge the underlying resilience of most global supply chains, but, in the face of so much international turmoil over recent years, the survey confirms our experience that the current trend in the UK is to look for secure, reliable and above all local solutions. You can’t overlook the environmental benefits either. We have a regulatory regime in the UK moving inexorably towards net zero, so buyers of UK manufactured goods are safe in the knowledge that producers are prioritising environmental improvements, renewable energy sources, lower waste and emissions and efficient resource management. Products manufactured and distributed
here also travel shorter distances to reach the customer, which translates into lower energy consumption and fewer greenhouse gas emissions. The Made in Britain message is clearly hitting home in both the B2B and B2C sectors, and it’s one which AluK will be pushing hard in 2025 as we make ongoing investments in our factory and in our product development programmes. The benefits to AluK customers don’t just come from the sales and marketing opportunities presented by growing ‘Buy British’ sentiment, they come from the fact that local manufacturing means consistently reliable quality, more choice, fast lead times, and a more responsive service. https://uk.aluk.com/

If we want to solve the skills shortage, we need to look beyond traditional recruitment methods. The old approach of waiting for qualified candidates to come to us simply isn’t working anymore, they just aren’t there. Instead, we need to create them ourselves. We need to proactively reach out to different communities, create new pathways into our industry, and show people the opportunities that exist here. I’m proud that Warwick is leading the way on this. We are seeing success with our unique approach to sourcing and developing new talent, and we’re happy to share what we’ve learned. The future of our industry can be bright, but it will take creative and innovative ways to attract and develop the next generation of skilled workers. www.warwicknorthwest.co.uk WINDOW NEWS | APRIL 2025 35

Will an automation
revolution spark consolidation in the UK?
Mark Hickox, sales director for Thermoseal Group
“This could add thousands of pounds to the wage bills of a business that may only generate small amounts of profit. Passing that on is very difficult. But it’s not going to be cheap to borrow money this year – we have already seen inflation rise which has made the prospect of interest cuts appear less likely.”
Thermoseal Group has raised questions over market consolidation in the UK in response to advancing automation, a trend already seen elsewhere in Europe. The specialist insulated glass component manufacturer and distributor has suggested that moving to complete automation, which will likely only be possible for the largest fabricators due to cost, could leave smaller companies unable to compete, as savings made on labour drive prices down. Drawing parallels with Germany, Mark Hickox, sales director for Thermoseal Group, said: “Germany’s been automated for 10 years, and I think the UK has got some catching-up to do. “One thing that naturally follows automation is a concentration of the market. A lot of small or 36 WINDOW NEWS | APRIL 2025
medium sized customers will be priced out of the market and will end up being bought by the bigger ones. So, in the end, you will have 50 large customers instead of 200 of varied sizes, for example.” With UK fabricators also facing increased employment costs from April, Mark believes the impact of this added financial burden will only accelerate the move towards automation. “The other main reason to go automated is the hikes in minimum wages and National Insurance Contributions, which are really making some of our customers struggle,” he said.
In addition to rising employment costs, labour shortages experienced by many manufacturers – from small to medium companies, to super fabricators – are also fuelling the move towards automation. “It is getting more and more difficult for our customers to recruit skilled operators, and so we’re seeing huge staffing problems across the sector”, Mark said. “If businesses are struggling to find the right people, then it is surely another catalyst for the move towards more automation,” he said. Thermoseal Group, which became part of the Fenzi Group last year, recently saw annual production capacity of its UK-manufactured Thermobar warm-edge spacer more than double after investing in automation. www.thermosealgroup.com

The talent shortfall: What needs to be done? By Neil Evans, Managing Director, Veka plc. Securing over 250,000 skilled workers by 2028 may seem a difficult challenge, yet the Construction Industry Training Board insists that this is precisely the volume of talent required to sustain current demand. A lack of technical know-how, decline in apprenticeships and an ageing workforce, has left the industry with a long-established and growing skills shortage. The fenestration sector, integral to the construction supply chain, is also 38 WINDOW NEWS | APRIL 2025
struggling with the gap. It’s not just manufacturers like VEKA, who are reliant on hiring locally, but businesses across our sector, including fabricators, specifiers and installers. and remove blockers, and challenges to the delivery of other developments such as roads, railway lines and windfarms. The hope is to boost economic growth, connectivity and energy security whilst also delivering for the environment. And in a February interview with the BBC, Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner declared there were ‘no excuses’ for failing to deliver on Labour’s pledge to build 1.5 million new homes. Yet analysis from the same outlet reveals that homebuilding figures have already faltered in the government’s first six months. With a shortage of skilled labour
VIEWPOINT important as core construction jobs to prevent potential supply chain delays during the building process. And I can’t see a real plan to address this. Outside of economic growth, we also have the significant retrofit challenge. It’s no secret that the UK has some of the oldest housing stock in the world and according to the Connected Places Catapult, over one million UK properties must undergo retrofit each year to meet targets and achieve NetZero emissions by 2050. While windows alone cannot solve the NetZero issue, they can contribute significantly to the energy efficiency of properties. This target presents an opportunity for Veka customers to make a real difference to both the country’s climate target and homeowner energy bills, addressing the gap between the supply of technically skilled workers the demand for them is again crucial here.
and doubts over the construction sector’s capacity to scale up quickly enough to build the ‘new towns’ that the Government has set its sights on, the challenge extends beyond housing. Questions persist over whether the UK’s building industry can expand sufficiently to meet not only its housing targets but also the demands of large-scale infrastructure projects that have been labelled as crucial to the country’s economic growth – which the Chancellor has said is ‘the number one mission’ of the Labour government. Economic growth in the UK hinges on filling the skills gaps that exist in many industries. Addressing sub-industries like plumbing, electrics, ground working and, of course, fenestration is equally as
While the Autumn Budget had a focus on employment and skills development, at the same time, it delivered businesses the challenge of the increase in both minimum wage and national insurance contributions. Meaning that employers are understandably looking at their recruitment and employee costs, and, for many, opening new vacancies right now is not realistic. Addressing these challenges requires collaboration on multiple levels. Change perceptions of industry work Many young people and their families still view construction jobs as limited to manual labour with little career growth. To overcome this, we need to showcase the diversity, rewards and technological advancements in construction and fenestration. From high-tech design roles using AI and VR to sustainability-driven engineering projects, there is
no shortage of exciting career opportunities. By engaging with schools and colleges early, we can inspire the next generation to see this industry as a viable, exciting path. Build stronger pathways between education and industry Apprenticeships and vocational training are powerful tools but remain underutilised. Clearer pathways from learning to employment are needed, developed collaboratively between educators and employers. For example, organisations like Veka are prioritising training and upskilling, working closely with regional education providers. Initiatives like these directly tackle skills shortages in high-demand technical roles by aligning training with real-world industry needs. Support upskilling and retention within workforces Skills gaps don’t just start with recruitment, they are exacerbated when current employees don’t have access to opportunities for growth. Retention can improve considerably when employers invest in upskilling their teams. From courses in advanced glazing techniques to management certifications, continuous training not only addresses skills shortages but also reassures workers that their contribution is valued. Employers who invest in their employees’ growth, like Veka, build loyalty and see lower turnover. Commit to inclusive and fair recruitment Creating a sustainable talent pipeline also means diversifying hiring practices. Underrepresented groups are vital to broadening the talent pool. We must lower the barriers preventing these groups from choosing fenestration and construction careers. Continued on page 40 WINDOW NEWS | APRIL 2025 39

Make work pay Around one fifth of UK adults are economically inactive. There must be concerted effort between employers and the Government to make work pay, and to get as many people into roles where they can grow their skills. Policy support and long-term commitment Government and industry collaboration is vital to solving the
talent crisis. The upcoming Modern Industrial Strategy must provide a strong commitment to employment initiatives that prioritise closing skills gaps. Additionally, investment incentives, simplified planning systems for new projects and tax relief for professional development programmes are policies that could directly benefit the sector. Veka has always prioritised training and upskilling its team, aligning with the Government’s push to integrate more individuals into the workforce. This is an opportunity we are eager to support at both our Burnley site and Wellingborough
recycling facility, and we recognise the potential for regional growth and development. We need to see Government aggressively providing breakthrough solutions that close skills and technology gaps, supporting both manufacturing and construction to deliver growth, improve productivity and meet building targets. At the same time, as an industry, we should collectively work together to promote the benefits of working in the sector and support more people into roles to secure its future. www.vekauk.com
Why transparency is key Cornwall Group Chairman, Mark Mitchell, pens an open letter to the industry to demonstrate why open and honest communication throughout the supply chain is key to survival. I make no secret of the fact that Cornwall Group borrows money. It’s how we grow, how we invest, and how we ensure we stay ahead of the curve in this industry, which as we all know, is rapidly evolving with new technologies, machinery and products. But in this economic climate, transparency isn’t just something we demand of ourselves – it’s something we need from our customers too. The reality is stark. We are living in an economy that feels like it’s in recession, even if, on paper, we’re told that we narrowly avoid it every quarter. When you speak to businesses across the country, the sentiment is clear: margins are squeezed, demand is sluggish, and the cost of doing business is rising at an alarming rate. At Cornwall Group, we’ve committed to investing £5 million across our businesses this year. That’s three new toughening plants – each a millionpound investment – plus new vehicles, machinery, and IT infrastructure. Every pound of that is a strategic investment in our future. We borrow because we believe in the strength of our business, our team, and our market. We are 40 WINDOW NEWS | APRIL 2025

confident in our position, and these investments ensure we will continue to deliver the highest standards of quality and service for years to come. Cornwall Group has been in business since 1978, so we’ve weathered many economic storms, and we’ve always emerged stronger. We believe
VIEWPOINT in what we do, and we know that our strategy of sustainable investment, strong financial management, and partnership with our customers will keep us moving forward. But the challenge we’re seeing across the glass industry at the moment is that businesses are taking on work with razor-thin, often non-existent margins. Some are simply trying to keep their order books full, even when the financial viability of those jobs is questionable. We’re already seeing the casualties of this approach. Since Christmas, several established firms in our sector have folded, and according to the latest figures, more than 4,000 UK construction firms went into insolvency in 2024 – that’s a 17% increase from the year before. This is where transparency, along with credibility, integrity, and trust, becomes non-negotiable. These values are more important than ever in any partnership – whether with colleagues, customers, suppliers, or lenders. This confidence to be open and honest is essential. We expect it from our lenders, and we need it from our customers. Just as we stay close to Barclays to keep them informed about our financial position, we ask that our customers do the same with us. If a customer is struggling, we’d rather know upfront so that we can look at the problem together, rather than leaving it until the ship has already sailed. Because while a lack of orders can hurt a business, it’s a lack of cash that kills it. For us, investment is essential, but so is resilience. We’re not waiting for things to ‘get better’. We’re positioning ourselves for the long term, so that when things do turn, we’ll be ready, with better efficiency and the highest quality products on offer. But in the meantime, we will continue to borrow responsibly, invest strategically, and uphold the trust and integrity that underpin every successful business relationship. We ask for the same level of honesty from those we do business with, as strong partnerships built on transparency and credibility will be the foundation for long-term success. So, if you’re a customer, supplier, or competitor reading this, my message is simple: stay close to your lenders, stay realistic about your margins, and above all, be transparent. Because in times like these, honesty isn’t just good business – it’s survival. www.cornwallglass.co.uk WINDOW NEWS | APRIL 2025 41

Choosing the
right hardware for seaside locations For builders, architects, and property owners working on coastal homes and businesses, selecting the right door and window hardware is key. Harsh seaside conditions – high winds, salty air and airborne deposits – can accelerate corrosion and reduce the lifespan of hardware, leading to costly replacements and frustrated customers.
Fortunately, there are products specifically designed for marine environments. Coastal Group’s polished stainless steel hardware range has been engineered to withstand the toughest seaside conditions. The Importance of 316 Stainless Steel “Not all metals are created equal when it comes to resisting corrosion in tough environments,” explains Loren Jenner, Coastal Group’s managing director. “We developed our range of BLU hardware specifically for the tough conditions found in areas near the coast. The material and the finish are all tested to make sure they’re up to the challenge.” 316 marine-grade stainless steel offers superior protection against saltwater exposure, making it the ideal material for external door and window hardware in seaside properties. 42 WINDOW NEWS | APRIL 2025

• Superior Corrosion Resistance – The addition of molybdenum to 316 grade steel enhances its ability to withstand saltwater corrosion and pitting, ensuring long-term performance
“Polished stainless steel is the ultimate choice for coastal environments,” explains Philip Walklett, engineering manager at Coastal Group. “Its smooth, polished surface provides the best resistance to salt, moisture, and corrosion, giving it the edge on other finishes.”
• Enhanced Durability – Known for its strength, 316 stainless steel prevents hardware from becoming rusted or damaged, even in extreme coastal weather • Low Maintenance – Unlike other materials, 316 stainless steel requires minimal upkeep while delivering high performance, reducing the need for frequent repairs and replacements. Getting the Finish Right Selecting the correct finish is just as important as choosing the right material, especially in seaside environments where exposure to salt and moisture can rapidly
Polished hardware outperforms other finishes in tests. It helps reduce surface crevices where salt and grime can accumulate, making maintenance easier and preserving the sleek, modern look. For homeowners and builders looking to protect their investment, polished stainless steel hardware offers reliability, longevity, and an elegant finish – even in the toughest coastal conditions. is highly resistant to corrosion, proper maintenance can further extend its lifespan. Loren Jenner, managing director of Coastal Group, highlights the importance of choosing the right hardware: “When homeowners and builders invest in a highquality door, they expect it to stand the test of time – but the wrong hardware can let them down. Cheap, low-quality handles and fittings don’t just ruin the look with rust streaks; they can also compromise functionality, leading to stiff handles and sticky locks. In harsh coastal environments, the right hardware isn’t just about looking good; it’s essential for durability, performance, and long-term value.” To maintain the integrity and appearance of stainless steel hardware in coastal areas,
Coastal Group recommends the following care tips:
Protecting Property Value with the Right Hardware
• Regular Cleaning – Wash hardware regularly with fresh water and a mild detergent to remove salt deposits and grime. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a soft cloth to prevent water spots
Research suggests that coastal properties can command a premium of up to 30% on the housing market, but environmental damage caused by salt, wind, and moisture can significantly reduce their worth. Rusting metal, corroded locks, and failing hardware not only impact the visual appeal of a property but also its security and value.
• Avoid Harsh Chemicals – Refrain from using abrasive cleaners, steel wool, or harsh chemicals, as these can damage the protective surface and reduce corrosion resistance • Routine Inspections – Periodically check hardware for signs of wear or damage. Address any issues promptly to prevent further deterioration • Lubrication – Apply a light coat of marine-grade lubricant to moving parts such as hinges, locks, and handles to ensure smooth operation and additional protection against corrosion.
By choosing high-performance polished stainless steel hardware specifically designed for coastal environments – and following simple maintenance steps – homeowners and builders can maximise performance, minimise costly repairs, and protect the longterm value of their properties. coastal-group.com WINDOW NEWS | APRIL 2025 43

But it really strikes home that so many young people just don’t know what’s out there. They ask great questions: What’s it like to work in a factory? Do I need qualifications? What kinds of roles are available? And when I start talking about the glazing industry – how we make different types of glass, the impressive contracts we’re involved in in their local area – their eyes light up. You can see the moment when something clicks.
The future of our industry starts in
the classroom
Kirsty Fortnam, technical manager at Glass Express Midlands, shares her take on why she believes social responsibility should be the cornerstone of every business.
When people ask what I do at Glass Express Midlands, they’re usually expecting me to talk about glass specifications, machinery, or logistics. And yes, those things are part of my day-to-day. But something just as important to me is what I do outside of the factory floor: working with young people and giving back to our community. Social responsibility isn’t just a buzzword at Glass Express Midlands. It’s something we live and breathe. building career frameworks with local schools, mentoring students, or serving as a school governor, I see this work as an investment – not just in our industry, but in the people who will one day shape it. It all started with a visit to Q3 Academy in Langley. Glass Express give me one or two days a month to work with teachers to help prepare students for life after school. The idea is simple: bridge the gap between education and employment. I also take part in careers fairs, and I am constantly amazed at the enthusiasm and curiosity of the students.
That’s why this work is so important. If we don’t show young people the opportunities in industries like ours, how can we expect them to consider it as a career? Careers education in schools is improving, thanks in part to the Gatsby Benchmarks, which promote real-world exposure through employer interactions and workplace visits. But for those benchmarks to work, businesses like ours need to step up. My role as a governor at Hanbury Primary School in West Bromwich is another part of this commitment. I wanted to take our outreach further and give back to younger children in our community. The school’s headteacher has a “grow your own” philosophy, developing teaching assistants and support staff from within, which aligns perfectly with how we nurture talent at Glass Express. We believe in building people up and helping them reach their potential. The governing experience has been eye-opening. I’ve undergone a comprehensive induction and training programme and often attend meetings at short notice. I’m proud that external reviewers see the value in having governors Continued on page 46

Window Ware’s Perspective on 2025 Product Trends Richard Bryant, commercial director at Window Ware, shares what he thinks is in store with his top five product trends set to shape the industry in 2025. As we move further into 2025, the window and door industry, as usual, continues to evolve at a remarkable pace. From what we’re seeing in the market, there are five key product trends that are poised to really define the year ahead. Flush sash products look set to maintain their strong growth trajectory, and the rising popularity of our Regal Hardware range is a direct reflection of this trend. It offers fabricators the perfect solution for creating windows and doors that combine modern performance with traditional aesthetics. Customers continue to favour heritage aluminium for period projects and building refurbishments, drawn in by their ‘steel look’ design, slim profiles and typically grid-like glass panes which all add to its aesthetic appeal. we’re excited to offer our new Regal Hardware knurled door and window handles, which are designed to perfectly complement these increasingly sought-after products. Vertical sliding sash windows, another product with heritage appeal, are poised for a strong year. For many years, traditional timber sash windows were replaced with standard casement windows. However, modern vertical sliding windows, manufactured from PVC or aluminium and virtually maintenance-free, offer an excellent way to restore a building’s authenticity. To support this trend, our hardware collection includes all the components fabricators need to produce authentic-looking sash windows that meet contemporary performance standards. In the door sector, we anticipate

that inline sliding patio doors will continue to gain market share, as their versatility makes them a great fit for most homes. Whether it’s a modest 2-pane set-up or an impressive large-span installation, our Glide Hardware range, specified on the Kӧmmerling PremiLine patio door system, provides everything fabricators need. This includes heavy-duty tandem rollers and soft-close mechanisms, the perfect upgrade to any inline patio door. We’re also seeing a lot of excitement around next-generation entrance doors for 2025. For example, Regalead have launched their engineered door solutions to open up new possibilities with PVC doors and every month there are more companies advertising aluminium entrance doors. It’s shaping up to be a dynamic year ahead, and Window Ware is ready. As the market evolves, our extensive range of hardware solutions is evolving right alongside it. We’re committed to ensuring that whatever direction the industry takes, we’ll be providing the highquality hardware our customers need to meet every demand. www.windowware.co.uk

Helen McKerracher: 25 years of service On her 25th year at Bohle, we talk to Customer Services Manager, Helen McKerracher, to get her take on the industry, the future and her career highs and lows.
Q: Hi Helen! Can you talk us through your Bohle career? HK: So, I didn’t come straight into Bohle as the Customer Service Manager in 2000. I started as a Customer Service Assistant and actually kind of fell into my current position! The job became vacant and when we were asked if any of us were interested in interviewing
for the position, it was a bit of a tumbleweed moment…so I said, ‘I’ll give it a go!’ Fast-forward a quarter of a century, and here we are… Q: And how about Bohle – how has it changed over the last quarter of a century? HK: Initially we were in a much smaller premises, but in
PEOPLE industry? How has that changed since you started? HK: I think what’s been really noticeable is that a lot of knowledge within the industry seems to have dissipated as manual glass processors and smaller glass workshops have reduced drastically in number. They tended to be highly skilled, knowledgeable, and pretty much self-sufficient; they’d know exactly what they needed from us. But since businesses have started to become more automated, and the manual side of the industry has reduced, it’s almost like the knowledge in the industry isn’t as it was, and we are heavily relied upon now to become not just the supplier, but also the advisor. But this is something we’re actually very proud of: customers trust our expertise. They come to us for our knowledge as well as our products.
2004, we moved to our current Dukinfield site. From there, the business grew massively – the team got bigger, we had different sub-companies, and we were distributing from multiple locations. And that remained until about 2016, when the strategic decision was taken to focus on the glass side of the business – manufacturing and distributing tools, machinery and highquality hardware. But I can honestly say that for the whole 25 years, it’s always felt like family. I’m very fortunate that a lot of the colleagues that I started with are still here today. I feel like I’m coming to work with my friends. Q: And what about the
Q: What is your favourite thing about working at Bohle? HK: Definitely the people. But I also enjoy the problemsolving side of it and helping people. Getting that “thank you very much. You’ve been really helpful” at the end of a phone call…I think to myself, ‘job well done’. Q: What’s been the biggest challenge of your career? HK: We’ve been through some rough times with dips in the economy, but we’ve always managed to navigate them because we’ve been able to diversify. Our customer base isn’t just one segment, and we’ve never just had one product range. That gives us the flexibility to target different areas of the market during peaks and troughs.
And then obviously Covid, the aftermath of which is still very real and challenging. Q: What has been your proudest achievement of your career? HK: In 2010, Bohle won the G-Award for customer service, and that was a definite personal high point. But I think I’m most proud of this – my 25 years! To still feel challenged every day, like I’ve got more to do and achieve, is very special. Q: And finally, what do you think the next five years looks like – both for Bohle, and yourself? HK: I think in terms of the market, it’s possibly the most challenging it’s ever been. So, while I don’t think it’s going to be easy, by any stretch of the imagination, I think we’ll continue to prevail as a leading supplier of glass hardware. We maintain a personalised service in a world where customer service is becoming more and more faceless, and that is a definite strength of ours, and one that won’t change. And when it comes to me, well I’ve got a ridiculous number of hobbies that I hope I’m still doing in five years time…ceramic throwing, archery, ballroom dancing, paddleboarding – you name it! And it obviously goes without saying that I’ll still be at Bohle; I’ll be celebrating my 30-year anniversary! Missed the Tax Year-End?
Here’s What Window
Installation Businesses Should Focus on Next By Simon Jarman, CEO of Clever Bean Accounting The 2024/25 tax year has just closed - and for many window installation businesses, it passed with little more than a glance at the calendar. If you didn’t manage to make lastminute planning decisions before 5 April, you’re not alone. But now isn’t the time to dwell on missed opportunities. It’s time to regroup, take stock, and make sure you’re set up for a more proactive and profitable 62 WINDOW NEWS | APRIL 2025
year ahead. Here are some of the key areas to review now that the new tax year has begun - and steps you can still take to strengthen your financial position for 2025/26. 1. Pension Contributions: Still Worth a Look While pension contributions needed to be made before 5
FINANCE April to qualify for 2024/25 tax relief, it’s not too late to plan for the year ahead.
With the new tax year underway, now is the time to review how you pay yourself:
If you’re a limited company, employer contributions to pensions remain one of the most tax-efficient ways to extract profit. For 2025/26:
• Has your salary been set at the most tax-efficient level?
• The annual allowance remains generous (up to £60,000, depending on circumstances). • Pension contributions made by the business can reduce your Corporation Tax bill. Now is the perfect time to put a monthly pension contribution plan in place, rather than leaving it to the end of the year. 2. Review Your Salary and Dividend Mix
• Are you making use of your personal allowance and dividend allowance? Setting your salary and dividend mix correctly now ensures you’ll make the most of available allowances throughout the year - and avoid surprises in your January tax bill. 3. Get Ahead on Bookkeeping and Record Keeping If you scrambled to get your records in order for year-end or worse, still haven’t done so - make this the year you build
better habits: • Keep your books up to date monthly, not annually. • Use cloud-based software to stay on top of income, expenses, and VAT. • Start preparing now for your 2024/25 self-assessment, especially if you’re a sole trader or receive dividend income. Getting organised now reduces stress, helps with budgeting, and means you’ll be in control of your numbers - not reacting to them. 4. Budget for Wage and NI Changes in 2025/26 From April 2025, the National Continued on page 54
FINANCE Continued from page 63
Living Wage (NLW) will rise to £12.21 per hour and will apply to all workers aged 21 and over. This is a significant increase and will affect most installation businesses with employees, including fitters, admin teams and surveyors. On top of that, employer National Insurance contributions (NICs) will increase from 13.8% to 15%, and the threshold at which employers start paying NICs will drop from £9,100 to just £5,000 per year. This means many more employees will attract employer NICs, and those already over the threshold will cost more. Now is the time to: • Update your payroll forecasts to reflect the new rates. • Adjust your labour cost assumptions in your pricing. • Review whether any staffing model changes are needed to maintain profitability. Failing to budget for these increases will leave you exposed later in the year especially if you haven’t passed those costs through to your customers. 5. Plan This Year’s Equipment and Investment Spend If you plan to invest in new tools, vans, or office equipment, you can still benefit from the Annual Investment Allowance (AIA). Although you missed out on reducing your 2024/25 Corporation Tax bill, you can now plan ahead and ensure any major purchases are made when they’re most tax efficient. Remember: under AIA, qualifying purchases up to £1 million can be written off in full 64 WINDOW NEWS | APRIL 2025
against profits. 6. Improve Cash Flow Forecasting Many businesses only review cash flow when there’s a crunch. A new tax year is a great time to set up a rolling cash flow forecast: • Monitor upcoming VAT, Corporation Tax, and PAYE bills. • Plan for any seasonal drops in revenue. • Anticipate funding needs before they become urgent. Regular forecasting gives you control, avoids last-minute borrowing, and helps you make decisions from a place of confidence. 7. Build a Better Financial Routine Rather than scrambling at year-end, now is the ideal time to establish a structured and proactive approach to financial management. Building a consistent monthly routine ensures you’re not only staying compliant but actively using financial information to drive better decisions. This means more than just keeping the books up to date - it’s about turning numbers into insight. Successful window installation businesses use regular financial reviews to: • Track job profitability and understand which work types generate the best margins. • Review key KPIs like gross margin, overhead recovery, and cash flow.
apart is how they use this information. At Clever Bean, we believe that great businesses are run by their numbers. It’s not enough to react to financial information after the fact strong businesses use data to make confident, forward-looking decisions. Too often, small and mid-sized businesses in our sector rely solely on year-end accounts, missing out on the benefits of real-time insight. Each month, it pays to sit down and review financial performance, analyse key metrics, and interpret the story behind the numbers. It’s about driving long-term profitability and improving cash flow through better decision-making. If you’re not reviewing your numbers regularly it might be time to take a different approach. Because the businesses that truly succeed are the ones that know their numbers and act on them. Final Thoughts: Last Year’s Lessons, This Year’s Gains Even if you didn’t take full advantage of year-end planning opportunities, the start of a new tax year gives you a clean slate. What matters now is how you use the next 12 months. By taking control early reviewing your pay structure, budgeting for wage increases, planning capital spend, and setting up regular reviews you’ll end the year in a far stronger financial position.
• Identify trends early, whether that’s rising costs, underperforming sales channels, or inefficiencies in delivery.
And if your accountant is still only talking to you once a year? It might be time to expect more. Because running a successful business means staying ahead of the numbers - not just catching up with them.

Premium window maker
Finstral enters the UK market The South-Tyrolean family business is among the biggest window suppliers in Europe. The company recently opened its Finstral Studio Borehamwood in north London and is making its debut at the FIT Show in Birmingham this year, launching its appeal to resellers in the UK. We asked Andreas Simmer, head of Finstral UK, about his plans and ambitions.
Mr. Simmer, Finstral is another supplier of continental windows that has decided to come to the UK. Can you tell us why and what your company has to offer the UK market? I would say it was about time. On one hand [the] UK has a strong premium segment for high-quality 78 WINDOW NEWS | APRIL 2025
building goods, which makes it an attractive market for Finstral. And on the other, anyone who is familiar with continental window suppliers knows that Finstral undoubtedly offers one of the most sophisticated window systems in Europe. Since I started talking to UK dealers and architects about our products, the feedback I keep

getting is that this wide range of possibilities in terms of functionality and aesthetics has not been seen before. So this is the pitch.
FIT SHOW - SHOW GUIDE SPECIAL that allows for real design flexibility, and a level of craftsmanship that sets us apart. More than anything, we’re here to start conversations. We want to meet dealers, resellers, and industry experts who are looking for innovative, highmargin solutions that can truly differentiate their business. We encourage everyone to stop by, experience the Finstral difference for themselves, and explore the opportunities of working with us. What can visitors of the Finstral Studio Borehamwood expect to see? Our first British Finstral Studio doesn’t aim for end customers, but mainly for dealers or other professionals who want to inform themselves about the Finstral product range and our premium sales strategy. We explain all the functional and aesthetic options of Finstral elements from the outside, i.e. the façade side; the center, i.e. the core of the window; the inside, i.e. the living side; and all around, i.e. the service around the window. The best option is to visit finstral. com/borehamwood or make an appointment with us directly in the Studio.
What makes the Finstral product range so special? What are the brand’s unique selling propositions? Windows are often still seen as a commodity. But in reality, they are an investment for decades. It is therefore worth opting for a better and more beautiful product. Finstral really masters this offer, thanks to its consistently modular product range, its uncompromising material, construction and installation quality and its sense of aesthetics. After all, the strongest sales factor is ultimately beauty. And with Finstral, beautiful windows are really good business. Finstral is making its debut at the FIT Show in Birmingham this year. What can visitors expect from your presence at the event, and what are you hoping to achieve? We’re really excited to be part of

the FIT Show this year—it’s the perfect platform for us to introduce Finstral to the UK market and connect with professionals who are looking for something different in the world of windows and doors. Stand S70 will showcase the full scope of what we offer: premiumquality products, a modular system
Our long-term goal is to establish ourselves here in the UK. That will take time, but we have it. After all, we are serious about building truly sustainable partnerships. We are already attracting a lot of interest in the window industry. Many dealers are looking for proven, high-margin products with a high potential for differentiation from the competition. And this is exactly where we can be an attractive option with our consistent premium range. Thanks for the interview. finstral.com/borehamwood WINDOW NEWS | APRIL 2025 79

solutions to meet the evolving needs of fabricators.
To mark its launch as an independent hardware supplier, Safeware will be making its debut at this year’s FIT Show, showcasing its extended product range and commitment to
quality, reliability and customerfocused service. In what the company says is an industry first, Safeware will also be bringing the market’s first smart locking solution for aluminium windows, demonstrating the Yale SensCheck on the new Stellar Heritage Casement. Rob Hartill, commercial director at Safeware said: “We’re delighted to be bringing our hardware offer to the wider industry and are looking forward to demonstrating the value of our consultative approach to hardware supply. Plus, as an Epwin Group business, we have the backing of one of the biggest names in the window industry. It gives you peace of mind you’re working with a reliable supply partner.”
FIT SHOW - SHOW GUIDE SPECIAL Safeware has an impressive offer for fabricators looking for a reliable hardware supplier. It stocks over 2,500 hardware products from over 70 leading brands. It picks 80,000 order lines and fulfils 12,000 orders every year with an OTIF rate of 98.4%. Every product is indicative tested in Safeware’s in-house testing facility and then independently tested by a UKAS accredited organisation, giving peace of mind that compliance is covered. Alongside the product range, the company says its consultative approach adds even more value, and it uses its experience and expertise to offer valuable input and solve the most demanding technical challenges. Rob noted: “We get to know every customer, their business and their unique requirements so we can provide the solutions that are needed, meeting and exceeding expectations every time.” The consultative approach even extends to developing bespoke hardware innovations for its customers. In fact, many of the products in its portfolio were originally developed by Safeware for specific customer needs. For example, it was the driving force behind innovations including the Safeware 7 and 8 door locking systems, the SFS Dynamic 2D hinge and Yale SensCheck smart window and door locks. Rob noted: “Our in-house technical expertise and strong partnerships with our hardware partners give our customers a decisive competitive advantage.” Rob concluded: “We’re excited to begin this new chapter in our history and looking forward to meeting customers old and new at FIT.” Safeware will be on stand F22 at the FIT Show, which runs 29 April to 1 May 2025 at the NEC in Birmingham. safewarehardware.com

According to the company, PassivGlas ReGlaze delivers a quick-fit, cost-effective and high-performance upgrade for homeowners, landlords and facility management organisations. “The quick installation, minimal labour and fewer materials makes PassivGlas ReGlaze a high-margin business opportunity for installers looking to extend their current offering and attract new customers” says Ruth Henderson, managing director. Unlock the sales potential of premium integral blinds, says
Morley Glass
Integral blinds manufacturer Morley Glass returns to the FIT Show with a collection of shading and privacy systems. The company will be showcasing the best of its contemporary UniBlinds systems at the show, plus its Uni-Switch switchable smart glass, on its stand located at J40. According to the company, the key themes for Morley Glass this year will be style and quality, with a range of products it believes will encourage installers to propose integral blinds more routinely to homeowners with confidence. The company has designed its 94 WINDOW NEWS | APRIL 2025
stand to show why the choice of control systems available, coupled with its range of contemporary, neutral colours, many of which are exclusively available in the UK from Morley Glass, offer huge appeal to end-users. For Venetian Uni-Blinds these colours include Agate Grey (S120), a light, muted shade of grey with a hint of green, and Black (B160), one of the defining colours of home décor so far in the 2020s, says the company. Another integral blind to feature at the FIT Show will be the pleated blackout. Like the Venetian options, this integral blind is available in a variety of neutral colours.
Amongst the product innovations on display at the FIT Show are the slimline Venetian integral blind system, known as the SL16, the SV+ sliding Venetian system, plus the exclusive new ScreenLine Wave integral blind. ScreenLine Wave is a brand new type of integral blind developed by Pellini S.p.A. which features an ultra-thin polyester film created in a horizontal wave pattern, rather than fabric used in pleated integral blinds. This motorised integral blind offers an alternative approach to shading and privacy, providing excellent solar control and thermal performance, claims the company, and a blackout blind version is also available. While not new product launches, the SL16 and SV+ expand the use of integral blinds in more types of windows and doors by overcoming two of the most common barriers. The appeal of the SL16, which has been available for several years, is

growing as it can be used for retrofitting into existing frames and is available in several new colours, which will be revealed at the FIT Show. The narrower Venetian blind slats of SL16 mean it can be used in 24mm IGUs, rather than the 28mm minimum thickness of other types of integral blinds, according to the company.
The SV+ is a more recently developed integral blind. It is a variation of Morley Glass’s biggest selling system, the cordless magnetic slider-controlled SV, with symmetrical appearance to meet specific aesthetic goals. Both systems are now available with a device which combines the magnetic slider with a wand to
Visitors to the Morley Glass stand can also explore two recent innovations. The pleated blackout integral blind system for flat glass rooflights offers a seamless shading and privacy solution, compatible with all major rooflight systems. Completing the lineup, the Uni-Switch switchable smart glass system returns after impressing installers at the 2023 FIT Show. It provides instant privacy using electricity thanks to a thin film applied to the laminated glass which changes from its opaque state when the power is off, to transparent when the electricity supply is switched on, says the company. www.morleyglass.co.uk

Excellence: The GB Joinery Story With a heritage spanning more than five decades and expertise that runs generations deep, GB Joinery is bringing premium timber windows and doors to installers nationwide - backed by supreme industry knowledge and an unwavering commitment to quality. When Lee Parrott talks timber, people listen. It’s not just that he’s spent his entire working life - since the age of 19 104 WINDOW NEWS | APRIL 2025

Lee and Caroline Parrot
TIMBER WINDOWS this business from both sides,” explains Lee, who joined the family enterprise in 2000. “I’ve been a fitter, service engineer, surveyor, and salesperson. When we tell an installer that a product will work in a particular way or meet specific requirements, it comes from decades of handson experience.” Strategic Expansion In 2022, Reddish Joinery acquired GB Joinery, a strategic move that Lee describes as a natural evolution. “The quality of GB’s products and manufacturing capabilities was immediately impressive,” he notes. “We saw an opportunity to bring that exceptional craftsmanship to the trade market.” With GB Joinery now focused exclusively on supplying trade customers, the company is leveraging its manufacturing expertise to offer installers a compelling timber product that meets contemporary demands. The GB Joinery Advantage A Legacy of Craftsmanship The story begins in 1967, when Lee’s grandfather Doug established what would eventually become Reddish Joinery, working out of a modest garage crafting bespoke wooden products. By the 1970s, the business had expanded into its first commercial unit, and in 1972, became a limited company. When Lee’s father Mike took the reins in the 1980s, the company began specialising in windows and doors, even developing a proprietary glazing system - an innovation that demonstrated the family’s commitment to advancing the craft. “What makes us different is that we’ve lived and breathed
contemporary energy efficiency demands while offering the aesthetic advantages that only genuine timber can provide. The Installer’s Perspective What truly distinguishes GB Joinery is its unique insight into the end-user experience. Having operated Reddish Joinery’s retail business for decades, Lee and his wife Caroline (who joined the company in 2015) understand exactly what homeowners expect. “That perspective is invaluable to our trade customers,” Lee explains. “We know what questions end users will ask, what features they value, and how the products perform in real-world conditions. Our installers benefit from that knowledge.” Caroline describes the company culture as “loyal, honest, hardworking, and committed to quality” - values that extend from Reddish’s retail operations to GB’s trade supply business.
For installers already working with timber, GB Joinery offers a refreshingly reliable partner with impressive 4-6 week lead times - notably quick for the sector. For those looking to add timber to their product range, the company provides comprehensive installation training and ongoing support.
British-Made Excellence With all products manufactured in Britain, GB Joinery combines traditional craftsmanship with modern manufacturing techniques. The company is now inviting window and door installers across the UK to discover the benefits of partnering with a genuine timber specialist.
“The timber market offers tremendous opportunities for installers,” says Lee, who spent time in Australia in 2017-2018 promoting Accoya, the marketleading modified timber that features prominently in GB’s product range. “With materials like Accoya, we’re offering products that combine traditional beauty with exceptional performance.” GB Joinery’s windows achieve U-values of 1.2, meeting
“Whether you’re already selling timber products or considering adding them to your range, we’d welcome the conversation,” says Lee. “This isn’t just about superior windows and doors - it’s about partnering with a supplier who truly understands your business challenges and can help you meet the growing demand for quality timber products.” For more information visit www.gb-joinery.co.uk WINDOW NEWS | APRIL 2025 105
TIMBER WINDOWS in England have a median Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) score of 68, placing the average in the D rating. Looking at rental specifically, it has been reported that around ‘2.9 million homes will need to be upgraded if they are to meet the new government target of a C EPC rating by 2030’. It has to be noted that whilst there are base guidelines for the regulations on listed and heritage buildings, the interpretation of these can vary quite substantially from region to region. Planning officers and other industry professionals often have inconsistencies in opinions and approaches to the properties, with activity that is approved in one region being denied in another.
Upgrading heritage and listed buildings in the UK By Mark Flanagan, Managing Director, Ventrolla As the UK moves towards its ambitious goal of reaching netzero by 2050, upgrading heritage and listed buildings to modern day efficiency standards is proving to be a stumbling block. Not only do these buildings hold key architectural and historical significance for the UK property sector, but the strict planning regulations restrict or challenge most of the changes that could improve the energy efficiencies of the properties. Given the UK has the largest stock of period properties in Europe, and in England alone there are 379,458 listed buildings and an estimated 2.8 million conservation areas, this presents significant challenges and obstacles in achieving the net-zero targets. Owners of these types of properties, or the professionals representing them in 106 WINDOW NEWS | APRIL 2025
documentation and work, must obtain consent before undertaking any changes that may impact the character of the building – and windows are typically considered ‘contributing elements’ of the heritage status. The windows in a property are also one of the largest causes of heat loss, so implementing modern technology to retrofits and repairs is absolutely vital. Residential properties account for approximately 40% of UK carbon emissions, with older heritage properties being the worst offenders for energy inefficiency. Without bringing in a form of standardisation or uniformity to policies, or developing an innovative approach to retrofitting, these homes will become a huge obstacle to the net-zero target. Linking to that, the Office for National Statistics reported that records in the ten years up to March 2024 shows that homes
Looking towards the positives, a great example of successful retrofit is Ventrolla’s project to improve energy efficiency at King Edward VI Handsworth School in Birmingham. Enhancing the thermal, acoustic and security performance of the windows was at the forefront of the works. By handcrafting the windows that needed replacing, and renovating the others, it was possible to ensure the timeless beauty of the property was preserved whilst also sticking to planning restrictions and regulations. By installing technology such as the sash removal system(SRS), and Ventrolla perimeter sealing system (VPSS), the team were able to safely and easily remove the upper and lower sashes and also create a barrier against cold air entering the property. The works improved energy efficiency by approximately 30% and reduced noise levels by up to 6-10db(A). The project took 12-weeks to complete, ensuring that the result met preservation standards whilst bringing the property to modern day efficiency and sustainability needs. Another example is Dunsley House, which needed to bring the timber sash windows back to life. Enhancing the functionality
TIMBER WINDOWS
of the windows was high on the owner’s agenda, as well as meeting modern performance standards. Through the use of the SRS and VPSS systems, the owner’s saw a 30% improvement energy efficiency and a 6-10db(A) noise level reduction. Not only were the windows improved, but
by honouring the building and craftsmanship, they were restored to their original beauty. For the UK to achieve the ambitious net-zero targets, the interpretation of regulations held over heritage and listed properties must be standardised. A balanced
and slightly more flexible approach with the rules is needed, where the importance of conserving history is recognised, but sensible retrofits and restoration is allowed. It is absolutely vital that the value of historical properties and assets must be preserved, and damage to the buildings is avoided at all costs, however in modern day it is necessary to allow certain works to take place to bring the properties up to a standard needed to meet net zero 2050. Whilst some variations are expected and understandable, planning authorities must become more aligned with the rules and restrictions that are in place and create clear guidelines for all heritage property owners to help streamline any retrofits or renovations and reduce unnecessary confusion. https://www.ventrolla.co.uk/
SMART’ PRODUCTS FOR DOORS AND WINDOWS
A smarter entrance door solution Combining advanced technology with traditional security, Danny Williams says that the Tedee smart lock – available on all Gerda Doors – has been designed to introduce genuine benefits for homeowners and added value for installers. Smart hardware technology has evolved considerably in recent years, with many fabricators now incorporating it into standard production processes. Yet, the data shows that UK consumers are still reluctant to embrace it. A recent Keystone Market Research report, which examined UK consumer fenestration trends, provided some sobering statistics for the smart hardware sector… 108 WINDOW NEWS | APRIL 2025

For Danny Williams, director of Gerda Doors, being able to convince end users to trust smart technology is clearly important, but so is bringing products to market that offer tangible benefits, rather than gimmicky features. “Personally, I see little value in sensors that can send an alert about a window or door being open, because what good is that to you if you’ve missed the notifications on your phone and you’re about to get on a plane, or a train or you’re in a motorway services two hours from home,” he says. “Smart devices need to be every bit as robust as traditional hardware – possibly even more so – but if they’re really going to excite customers then they have to demonstrate that they can genuinely enhance the user experience. “The Tedee smart lock, which

Quick and easy to install, Tedee can automatically unlock a door as users approach (no more searching for keys or having to juggle hands full of shopping) and then lock itself once the door has been shut. Remote access – for family, tradespeople or guests – can be managed via a smartphone app, and Tedee also allows for a number of alternative access methods such as a PIN code, smartphone or smart watch. Crucially, it is also designed to be operated with a regular and familiar key, eliminating any concern about power failure, a loss of connectivity or a lost or disabled phone. Certified by independent security institute, AV-Test, it incorporates the same standard of cloud based security encryption used by banks as well as state of the art cybersecurity protocols to prevent hacking and ensure secure communication between devices. “Tedee was developed by Gerda’s hardware specialists, so there’s a natural synergy with the brand,” says Danny. “Gerda doors are inheritably very strong, their aluminium and steel design means they are far more robust and better performing than any composite and that’s what inspired me to introduce them to the UK market in the first place. “A Tedee lock is simple to fit – and it enhances the premium, contemporary aesthetic of the door – but crucially, it also adds real value for homeowner customers. That alone positions it above so much of the competition in the smart hardware sector. “And for our growing Gerda Doors installer network, it’s another stand out feature in a range of high quality entrance doors that have been designed to raise the bar for the premium entrance door market.” www.gerdadoors.co.uk WINDOW NEWS | APRIL 2025 109

ERA expands TS 008 letterplate range
ERA has launched two new versions of its TS 008 letterplates into its Fab&Fix Heritage and Architectural ranges, following the success of its Fab&Fix Nu Mail Shield TS 008 Letterplate. The introduction of the Heritage Shield and Architectural Shield means that ERA now offers the largest range of TS 008 letterplates available on the market to date, claims the company. The inward opening designs join the outward opening Nu Mail Shield TS 008 Letterplate, which are all purposefully designed to prevent access via fishing or reaching. In protection mode, the inside flap of the design is angled to shield against potential intruders attempting to ‘fish’ through the door, protecting the door handle, cylinder and belongings inside the home. In addition, all TS 008 letterplate designs have been created to meet the latest PAS 24 standard for a compliant door set. All ERA’s TS 008 letterplates have passed the flap cycle test to 20,000 cycles, and also meet the corrosion resistance requirements of BS EN 1670, providing enhanced weather performance that delivers long lasting
Like the Nu Mail Shield TS 008 Letterplate, both new versions have a flap that is restricted to 40° to protect the property within, automatically closing when not in use to prevent damage to interior walls. With a projection of just 34mm, both styles provide a slimline aesthetic to the internal face of the door. The Heritage Shield, designed in a traditional style, and the Architectural Shield, designed in a contemporary aesthetic, are both fully weather sealed with internal brushes and a rubber gasket for enhanced weather performance. There are no external fixings, preventing the removal of the outer frame from the door. Sarah Knight, technical product manager at ERA, says: “Fab&Fix hardware is recognised within the industry for the excellent quality, functionality and style it has long delivered. The launch of the Architectural Shield and Heritage Shield means ERA now has the largest range of TS 008 certified letterplates available, once again demonstrating our dedication to providing fabricators with solutions that not only provide end-users with premium, certified performance but also a fantastic choice for visual appeal.” All ERA TS 008 letterplates are supplied with a 10-year mechanical guarantee from the date the parts are purchased, and the Nu Mail Shield TS 008 Letterplate has received Certifire accreditation, demonstrating its compatibility with 30-minute and 60-minute timber based doorsets. www.eraeverywhere.com

VBH has further expanded its range of locking systems for outward opening casement windows with the introduction of the greenteQ Invicta Non-Crop shootbolt.
Once fitted, security is provided by adjustable mushroom cams on the gearbox and extensions, and steel shootbolts that have two settings to allow penetration of the profile if desired.
The product joins the original Invicta shootbolt in a greenteQ casement lock line up that now includes eight options.
greenteQ Invicta Non-Crop is approved for use on Q-secure installations. Q-secure is VBH’s homeowner security guarantee scheme, which promises to pay the homeowner up to £9000 in compensation if a break in is successfully achieved due to hardware failure.
As the name suggests, Invicta Non-Crop allows the fabricator to simply drop the shootbolt extensions into place within the window sash without having to measure/mark and cut them to length. Hurst reinvents the PVC-U panel door
with seven new contemporary styles and enhanced security
proofs PVC-U panel doors against potential updates to industry standards, such as Document Q. “Our goal was to challenge the idea that PVC-U doors belong in the past,” said sales director Mark Atkinson. “For too long, PVC-U doors have been associated with outdated, traditional designs. Our latest range of contemporary panels proves that PVC-U doors can be just as stylish and desirable as composite or aluminium doors, while offering industry-leading security through our Securicore option.” The introduction of these seven new designs builds on the success of the Monaco One panel launched last year, which demonstrated that there is real appetite for contemporary PVC-U panel designs. By offering customers more choice in design as well as the option to upgrade to enhanced security through Securicore, Hurst is redefining the potential of PVC-U panel doors.
Hurst has continued its reinvention of the panel door with the launch of seven new contemporary styles, challenging outdated perceptions of PVC-U doors. Traditionally associated with more decorative and traditional designs, PVC-U doors have now been elevated to stand alongside composite and aluminium alternatives, thanks to Hurst’s latest innovations. The seven new panel styles – Amalfi Four, Portofino Three, Capri One, Sorrento Three, Como One, Clarence Two, and Provence Six – are designed to offer homeowners and developers more choice than ever before. In addition to panel design innovations, Hurst is also expanding its range of decorative glass options, drawing inspiration from the popularity of its composite door range. These new glass styles complement the contemporary aesthetic of the panels and allow for further customisation to suit individual preferences. Mark added: “It’s all about providing more choice. More choice on panel design, more choice on glass, and ultimately the ability to supply a PAS24 accredited panel door. With the introduction of Securicore, this latest range represents a genuine transformation in the market— offering contemporary designs, enhanced security, and expanding the reach and appeal of PVC-U panels.” www.hurstdoors.co.uk

Saint-Gobain Glass has announced that the world’s first lower-carbon glass, Oraé, is now being manufactured in the UK at its site in Eggborough, Yorkshire. Previously produced at other Saint-Gobain sites in Europe, this development marks a significant milestone in the company’s mission to drive down the carbon footprint of UK glass manufacturing while maintaining product quality, aesthetics and performance. Oraé is manufactured using a minimum of 64% recycled glass content (cullet) and offers a 42% lower carbon footprint than the company’s standard clear float glass.
A key enabler of Oraé’s sustainability credentials is Saint-Gobain’s ‘Glass Forever’ programme. This initiative facilitates the collection and recycling of large quantities of pre-consumer and post-consumer glass, transforming old glazing into high-quality new products. By embracing circular economy principles, Saint-Gobain ensures that glass remains infinitely recyclable, reducing waste and
resource consumption.
The use of renewable electricity in production further minimises its environmental impact. Also, Saint-Gobain’s investment in a new state-of-the-art furnace in 2021 enhances efficiency and sustainability in glass manufacturing. Mike Butterick, marketing director at Saint-Gobain Glass said: “Bringing Oraé production to the UK is a significant step forward in our sustainability journey. This milestone underscores our commitment to reducing carbon emissions while delivering highperformance glazing solutions that meet the demands of the construction industry. We are proud to offer a product that aligns with our vision for a greener future. We are also grateful to our customers and partners who are helping us to recycle enough glass to produce Oraé, and have embraced the circular economy that Glass Forever has inspired.” “Alongside its eco-friendly credentials, Oraé maintains the same aesthetics, quality, and performance as our standard
product’s environmental impact over its lifecycle. Saint-Gobain Glass has been a pioneer in EPD transparency for over a decade, supporting customers in selecting the best-performing, lowestcarbon glazing solutions. Oraé is now available in a variety of sizes and product combinations including lowemissivity coated glass products, offering fabricators, installers, architects, and specifiers a sustainable alternative without compromise. By bringing production to the UK, SaintGobain Glass says it reaffirms its commitment to innovation, carbon reduction, and the advancement of sustainable construction. Buildings account for 39%(1) of global greenhouse gas emissions, and by 2050, half of new buildings’ emissions could stem from embodied carbon(2). SaintGobain Glass is taking decisive action to address this challenge by developing solutions such as Oraé that support a sustainable built environment. www.saint-gobain-glass.co.uk WINDOW NEWS | APRIL 2025 117

Make an extra 20%

aluminium!
The CAB Closed-Loop Recycling Scheme is helping manufacturers to get paid more for ‘waste’ aluminium, recycle more – while also closing the loop on end-oflife aluminium products.
The Council for Aluminium in Building (CAB) Closed-Loop Recycling Scheme (CLRS), was launched in 2021 and is designed to promote efficient aluminium recycling within the construction sector. The scheme supports aluminium in recycling more – and to get paid more for scrap product – by isolating waste streams so that higher value aluminium alloys used in construction are ring120 WINDOW NEWS | APRIL 2025
fenced, commanding a higher price, from recycling specialists.
“The most commonly used alloy in aluminium in construction is 6063. In addition to the raw aluminium, it contains approximately 0.4% silicon and 0.7% magnesium”, explained Nigel Headford, chief executive of CAB. “If you can preserve that ‘mix’, you directly close-the-loop on the recycling process. The product that you’re ripping out or extrusion or manufacturing waste goes directly back into a new generation of products. “These can be made generating
only a fraction of the carbon – just 5% – used in manufacture of raw materials. “And as well as delivering major environmental wins, it’s also worth more to recyclers, which means members of CAB CLRS can get paid up to 20% more for their scrap.” The CAB Closed-Loop Recycling Scheme (CLRS) brings increased traceability to waste aluminium so that similar alloys are recycled together, maintaining their quality and usability. This includes manufacturing waste and postconsumer material. Free to join to CAB members, manufacturers, installation and refurbishment teams – or demolition partners, simply have to commit to separate waste aluminium according to alloy in collection. CAB recycling partners provide skips either at member factories or on site for larger schemes and collect them issuing a waste transfer note. A detailed report is then issued, providing full visibility of how much aluminium was collected,

Emplas doubles down on IGU manufacture with
second Forel IGU line
Emplas has stepped up its IGU manufacturing capability with the installation of a second Forel Vertical IGU-line.
Installed at its Padiham IGU manufacturing capability and representing a £1million plus investment, it doubles Padiham’s capacity, according to the company. Ryan Johnson, managing director, Emplas said: “When we acquired Padiham Glass in 2018 we did so with a commitment to invest in its manufacturing capability. “That included the installation of our first Forel Vertical IGU-line in 2023, and now a second at the start of 2025. “Stability in glass supply is key. Pressure on employers in the form of rising energy costs and the increases that come into effect at the start of April in the National Minimum Wage and 122 WINDOW NEWS | APRIL 2025
National Insurance, makes further consolidation likely. “We’re building capacity to make sure we continue to meet the needs of Emplas customers and support them in capitalising on future opportunities during a period of what we expect to be significant industry change.” The latest round of investment gives Emplas ‘twin’ Forel lines. This includes the Forel Vertical Washer, and Forel’s Art AS Flexible Spacer Applicator.
This automatically applies spacer bar to the edge of the glass sheet with an ultra-high level of accuracy, delivering an instant and far better bond than traditional spacer systems, maximizing thermal performance, says the company. The Forel coupling press then simultaneously couples IGU’s while filling them with gas ahead of automatic sealing, delivering
a highly accurate final seal on units and significantly reducing the likelihood of failure, claims the company. “We remain investment-led as a Group”, continued Ryan. “The market is going to continue to see change and we are making sure that we’re ready for it by investing in our capability across our businesses”, he said. Ryan added that against the backdrop of still high energy costs and the increase in the Energy Price Cap at the start of April, upselling on glass, should create opportunity for installers. “Products like Comfort Plus deliver a 63% energy efficiency gain. While high energy prices are making it more challenging for business, they are also making end-users far more receptive to messaging on energy efficiency”, he said. Ryan concluded: “If you have access to the right products, the right glass – and don’t have to worry about the stability of your supply chain – then there are still big areas of opportunity ahead.” www.emplas.co.uk

Howard Trotter highlights the broader impact: “Not only have we significantly increased production, but we’ve also enhanced overall factory efficiency and staff productivity. The SBA-4’s automation of cutting and machining processes means we now require just one operator, streamlining workflow and optimising output.” Matt Thomas, managing director at Haffner, concluded: “We were delighted that Shelforce selected us as their machinery partner and even more pleased that they are already experiencing the benefits of machine automation. Timberlook windows in a 200year old thatched cottage.
Determined to achieve a delicate balance between preserving historical authenticity and introducing performance features,
Concept Glazing selected Timberlook’s heritage window range for this particular project. “When you’re working with a 200-year-old thatched cottage, every detail matters,” explains Jake Connolly, director at Concept Glazing. “Our clients were passionate about maintaining the property’s historical character, but they also wanted the benefits of modern windows. Timberlook’s heritage range struck that perfect balance – they look completely authentic but perform like cuttingedge windows.” The installation featured Timberlook’s flush sash windows, specified with black outer frames,

white sashes, and astragal bars – a classic combination that perfectly complemented the cottage’s traditional architecture. Key to the project’s success was Timberlook’s attention to traditional joinery details. The range incorporates mechanical Timberweld joints instead of welded corners, authentic wood grain finishes, and traditional black Monkeytail handles. Amelia Gaughan, head of marketing at Affordable Windows Group, commented: “When we developed the Timberlook range, this is exactly the kind of project we had in mind. The installation showcases how our heritage
windows can satisfy the most demanding requirements for period properties. It’s particularly gratifying to see our attention to authentic details, such as our mechanical joints and traditional styling, being recognised at this level.” These design elements, combined with modern uPVC technology, delivered the perfect solution for this heritage project. Concept Glazing’s team carried out the installation with precision and care, ensuring each window aligned perfectly with the building’s original character. The A-rated energy efficiency of Timberlook’s windows has
significantly improved the cottage’s thermal performance, while the advanced weather sealing systems will provide excellent protection against the elements for years to come, claims the company. This stunning heritage installation was also recognised as the Fensa Installation of the Year at the end of 2024. This award is testament to both the quality of the products used as well as the high levels of technical skills and customer service demonstrated throughout the project, according to the company. www.timberlook.com WINDOW NEWS | APRIL 2025 127

Commercial, which chose EYG Commercial to complete the full re-glazing of the landmark 1970s building. It comes as the EYG Commercial’s installation teams are also preparing to install hundreds of windows and doors on new houses as part of the latest development by Beal Homes – ‘Ferriby Meadows’ in North Ferriby – where 115 new luxury homes are being built as part of a £40m project. Two more large-scale window installations on commercial properties which are being converted into residential complexes are also underway in Hull.
At Wilberforce Court, in High Street, teams are fitting more than 200 ‘timber-look’ UPVC windows, along with curtain walling screens and door entrances.
Sales and estimating director Richard Saunders says all the projects reflect well on EYG Commercial’s reputation and expertise.
As part of a six-figure contract, a commitment has been made to achieving zero waste, with all the old timber windows which are removed being recycled.
“We’re delighted with the quality of projects we are being chosen for, particularly those in our own city and region as we really feel it reflects how we are trusted to get things right when companies are looking for glazing specialists on flagship projects.
The entire installation of new windows – over four floors – is also being completed without the need to use scaffolding, as EYG’s installation teams are using harnesses when fitting windows from the inside, reducing overall cost. In George Street, the business is installing 130 white UPVC windows at Criterion House, which is also being converted into 41 apartments. The contract with Beal Homes marks the 9th housing development EYG Commercial has worked on for its fellow Hull business, where it will install hundreds of windows and doors, including agate grey and cream UPVC windows and bi-folding doors which open onto gardens.
“We take great pride in every job we do, and of course we want to be the firm of choice on our own patch and in our own region. “Being chosen by the likes of Beal Homes and Allenby Commercial is a really powerful seal of approval. They are outstanding businesses which are investing back into the region and delivering the highest quality developments. “When they choose a glazing contractor, we know they have plenty of options on the table, but we are local, we are have established a reputation for providing the highest standard of products and service, and we deliver for them.” WINDOW NEWS | APRIL 2025 129

Aluminium fenestration solutions from Senior Architectural Systems have been installed at Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service’s brand-new fire station in Aintree. Working closely with supply chain partner G G Glass & Glazing Ltd, Senior has supplied a combination of some of its most popular products, including its slimline SF52 aluminium curtain wall system, award-winning Pure aluminium windows, and Ali Fold bi-folding aluminium doors. Designed by Ryder Architecture and constructed by Wates, the new fire station is the first phase of development on the new 12-acre site, which will also see the creation of a new Training Academy. The fire station replaces Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service’s existing facilities in both Aintree and Croxteth and has been designed to offer both operational and environmental efficiencies. The new fire station building has been designed with sustainability
in mind, with both the exact location and orientation of the station considered to create a lower carbon footprint and a clear pathway to Net Zero. The thermal performance of both Senior’s SF52 aluminium curtain wall system and low U-value Pure aluminium windows has contributed to a more efficient building envelope, according to the company. Senior’s thermally broken SPW501 aluminium doors were also used throughout to provide safe and secure access. Designed to be operational 24 hours a day, the new station also includes youth engagement facilities and meeting spaces for community use. Green spaces and outdoor social areas have also been incorporated. On the timber-framed pavilion, Senior’s SF52 aluminium curtain wall system was installed with 200m feature profile caps, which extend over the façade to offer solar shading and shelter. www.seniorarchitectural.co.uk WINDOW NEWS | APRIL 2025 131

The costs of
marketing data
– the myths debunked Alex Tremlett, Insight Data’s commercial director, explores why the cost of not having accurate and reliable prospect data far outweighs the investment.
The trade show season is coming up, and no doubt many delegates will be returning to the office with a jumble of business cards and hastily scribbled phone numbers that they hope will be converted into sales. Meanwhile, your competitor is targeting their ideal prospects with highly focused campaigns based on 132 WINDOW NEWS | APRIL 2025
the latest accurate data. Shall we take a wild guess at who will secure the next big fenestration contract? In today’s business climate, the difference between thriving and surviving often comes down to a single crucial factor: the quality of your marketing data. Yet, there’s still widespread
suspicion among too many firms that investing in professional data solutions has very little cost benefit. Ironically, it’s this misconception that could be holding your company back from achieving the growth it deserves. The value of quality marketing data For fenestration companies of all sizes, from local installers to national manufacturers, identifying and connecting with potential customers is the lifeblood of business development. If you don’t have clients, you don’t have a business! Unfortunately, many firms continue to rely on outdated methods – a bit of advertising here and there, generic mailshots, unwanted cold calling - and hope for the best. And at best, this is
MARKETING & INTERNET data means that opportunities vanish when competitors reach potential customers first, often without you ever knowing they existed. Critically, without quality data you face a fundamental inability to identify emerging market trends and new opportunities. In short, this is all very frustrating, demotivating and loss making. What’s the solution? Well, as a marketing data company we’re bound to say that investment in quality data is the way forward. And we would be right. Our Salestracker CRM platform is tailored for the fenestration sector, providing real-time access to extensive prospect data and advanced lead management tools. It’s a user-friendly and extremely comprehensive data solution, etc – but what does it cost?
unpredictable. At worst, it’s a complete waste of time. In contrast, precision marketing based on high-quality, real-time data transforms this process from guesswork into strategy. If you have information of this quality, your sales team can simply focus efforts where they matter most. The price of bad data Of course, every investment decision must be made wisely, particularly when the business climate isn’t exactly favourable. If you’re looking to purchase marketing data and you’re concerned about the costbenefit ratio, consider this: how much time (and therefore money) are you wasting pursuing outdated leads, draining your sales team’s productivity daily? Plus, poor
Insight Data’s Salestracker offers a bespoke approach to pricing, ensuring businesses of every size can access the information they need at a cost that works for them. Our packages start at as little at £150 + VAT per month. By any stretch of the imagination, that really isn’t a lot, particularly when you’re getting access to a live system with continuous real-time updates. As Insight Data’s research team contacts companies within the database, the information is updated simultaneously, meaning you always have access to the freshest possible data. This real-time approach ensures you’re not working with information that could be months out of date—a crucial difference when businesses close, open, relocate or change key personnel regularly. Return on investment? The real measure of any business investment is its return, and this is where Salestracker
truly excels. If, for example, your average order value is £10,000 and Salestracker helps your team secure just one additional sale per month through better targeting and follow-up, that represents £120,000 in additional annual revenue. Now compare that to the investment in the platform itself and it doesn’t take a genius to work out that it’s pretty good value for money. In fact, many Insight Data clients report that Salestracker pays for itself within the first quarter of use, with everything beyond that representing pure additional profit. Making the decision When evaluating the cost of marketing data, the most important question isn’t “Can we afford to invest in quality data?” but rather “Can we afford not to?” In today’s competitive fenestration market, businesses that employ detailed, realtime data gain a significant advantage over those relying on outdated methods. They identify opportunities faster, respond more effectively to market changes and build stronger relationships with prospects and customers. With flexible pricing options and a rapid return on investment, Salestracker removes the financial barriers that might otherwise prevent businesses from accessing the data they need to thrive. The myth that quality marketing data is prohibitively expensive doesn’t stand up to scrutiny. When the right data is properly leveraged, it doesn’t represent a cost at all—it’s an investment that pays substantial dividends in growth, efficiency and profitability. In addition to the personal Easter egg donations that staff at the integral blinds manufacturer have been making, the company has been encouraging customers, suppliers and industry associates to get involved in the campaign. Their goal is to provide an Easter egg for every child in each of Yorkshire Children’s Charity’s 142 WINDOW NEWS | APRIL 2025

Morley Glass has once again boosted its collection by partnering with local ice hockey team Leeds Knights, a club which it has been proud to sponsor for several years, to encourage its supporters to donate Easter eggs. Leeds Knights fans have contributed 436 Easter eggs alone by donating at recent National League games – in return they have been entered into a draw to win prizes including a season ticket for the 2025-26 season. Charlotte Farrington, CEO and founder of Yorkshire Children’s Charity, comments: “While we primarily focus our energy and resources on funding essential items, we understand how important it is for children to feel included in other celebrations throughout the year. An Easter egg is something many children take for granted, but for families living in destitution this is just yet another
luxury that feels out of reach. “Our Easter appeal is only made possible through the kindness and dedication of our supporters. Thanks to Morley Glass’ remarkable generosity, Easter eggs have been delivered to primary schools across Yorkshire, spreading thousands of smiles.” Ian Short, managing director at Morley Glass adds: “Thank you to everyone who has got involved in supporting the Yorkshire Children’s Charity Easter Egg Campaign this year.
