TOWANDER THIS FALL

Shorter days and turning leaves may be harbingers of fall, but September and October offer some of the Pacific Northwest’s best weather. There’s still plenty of time to get outdoors before the cooler (and, in many areas, wetter) days are upon us. If you’re looking for inspiration for activities that will get you outside, we’ve got a few suggestions.
PAcIFIC NoRTHWEST Escapes

Stroll Through Seabrook
Embracing the design concept of New Urbanism, Seabrook was created with walkability in mind. From the town center, which is home to some of the Washington Coast’s best dining and shopping, to the eastern-most home, everything is a 10-minute walk or less. Even better, all roads and walking trails lead to the Pacific Ocean. With miles of beach access, family-friendly parks, and a main street filled with friendly businesses, Seabrook is paradise for those who love to stroll. ĝ seabrookwa.com

Nature Walk on Bainbridge Island
Called “One of the country’s most original and ambitious gardens” by The New York Times, Bloedel Reserve is 140 acres of curated natural wonder. With 23 distinct landscapes, including Rhododendron Glen, the Japanese Garden, the Reflection Pool, and the Birch Trail, the Reserve will immerse you in a tapestry of colors and vistas. The loop around the Reserve is only two miles

Hike to Hot Springs Near North Bend
The only thing better than a hike through the foothills of the Cascade Mountains is a hike through the foothills that ends in a hot springs soak. A 4.5-mile trek along the Snoqualmie River leads to Goldmyer hot springs—a destination that is perfect for meditation, taking in the lush wilderness, or resting weary muscles. While both the journey and the destination are incredibly rewarding, you’ll
Storm Watch in Westport
While many people think of the beach as a summertime destination, those who love a good storm consider fall the best season to visit the coast. If you are in the latter group, Westport is a fall must. If you’re able to stay overnight, there’s ample lodging with ocean views. Daytrippers can take advantage of Westport Light State Park’s boardwalk or dunes, or climb the stairs of the viewing tower downtown to observe the awe-inspiring power of the Pacific Ocean. ĝ experiencewestport.com/storm-watching

Shop the Farms of Vashon Island
Running every Saturday through September, the Vashon Island Farmer’s Market offers a bounty of Island-grown produce and locally crafted fare. Created by the Vashon Island Growers Association in the 1980s, the Farmer’s Market now features dozens of local farms, nurseries, food vendors, nonprofits, and craftspeople. Stop by for fresh ingredients for your next meal or enjoy the baked goods, tamales, popsicles, and spirits on site. The Kids’ Activity Booth will entertain the little ones so you can take your time browsing and sampling. ĝ vigavashon.org/market

Forage on San Juan Island
If you’d prefer to gather your ingredients yourself, San Juan Island is a forager’s paradise. Craving mussels, oysters, or clams? The intertidal areas in the San Juan Island National Historic Park offer several well-known harvesting spots. (Be sure you have the proper license for marine foraging and check local water quality alerts before you collect shellfish.) Early fall is the perfect time to hunt for Chantrelle mushrooms in the Island’s wooded areas, as well as plums, apples, and pears in local orchards.

Once home to the people of the Suquamish Tribe, Poulsbo was settled by Europeans in the 1880s and today is affectionately known as “Little Norway.” A ferry ride away from Seattle, this must-visit gem of a town is home to museums, antique shopping, dining, and a monthly Norwegian pancake breakfast.

SHOP
Poulsbo is well known to antique enthusiasts for its bevy of unique finds and hidden gems in the shops around town. Shoppers of all types will find something to like in Poulsbo’s art galleries, clothing boutiques, and stores dedicated to home decor, clothing, jewelry, toys, books, and more. If you want to take a piece of Little Norway home with you, be sure to visit Nordiska for Nordic- and Scandinavian-inspired apparel, gifts, and home furnishings. visitpoulsbo.com/shopping

You’ll find burgers, soups, salads, a full wine and beer list, and fresh seafood on their seasonal menu. Have happy hour nibbles and cocktails with friends on the outdoor patio overlooking Liberty Bay or treat the kids to lunch served from a pirate ship in the spacious dining room. Either way, you’re sure to enjoy the views and the welcoming staff. theloftpoulsbo.com
SEEK
In a city as invested in its history as Poulsbo is, you can bet its museum game is strong. The Poulsbo Historical Society is dedicated to collecting and preserving the history of the area, which they proudly display at the Poulsbo Maritime Museum, Heritage Museum, Martinson Cabin, and the Archive and Resource Center. Once you’ve soaked in all that culture, head to the marina for a walk on the boardwalk or visit one of Poulsbo’s beautifully maintained parks. poulsbohistory.org

Located in downtown Poulsbo just a short walk from the marina, Details provides a relaxed environment in a tasting room that changes décor with the seasons. Each visit is unique, but the quality of wines—and your experience—will always be top shelf. detailswinebar.co

WIDE SANDY BEACHES
This charming community is just a little more than an hour from Olympia on a highway that meanders scenically through the Black Hills. Westport is over 100 years young, with a past steeped in fishing, cranberry farming and, more recently, surfing, as well as a proposed oceanfront Scottish Links golf course! Enjoy 18 miles of pristine sandy beach and a 2.5-mile paved oceanfront path leading from the quaint marina to the tallest lighthouse in the state. Our market is comprised of Westport, Grayland, North Cove and Tokeland. Why not take a trip to Westport to discover the natural beauty of our coastal community? We look forward to meeting you soon!
