OUR TRANSGENDER COMMUNITY, by Thomi Clinton IT’S NOT YOUR LIFE BUT A TOOL As time passes and I begin the process of events in the Palm Springs area I realize how much I still need to learn. I have been on Facebook for longer than I can remember. I see Transgender people take things so personal, and I must say when my hormones are out of whack I sometimes do as well. I have to remind myself and my fellow brothers and sisters when I see a meltdown 22

occurring, “Facebook is a [t]ool…” That’s right, “A [t]ool.” It saddens me to see how people take Facebook so personal, how people send 40 texts to break up. If you texting to break up, it’s already way over! Feel free to connect to me on Facebook: Thomi Clinton, Palm Springs. www.TDORPalmSprings.com

FROM THE DESK OF THE PUBLISHER by Will Paige You can say that a comedian is never really funny until he learns humanity. For Robin Williams, love and compassion helped our humanity thrive. For most men about 50 or more, this one is sure to hit home. We have surely endured over the years the passing of the best of classic cinema. The Bogarts, Stewarts, Brandos, and the list goes on, including those like Williams that left us far too early. But Williams was different somehow. He was our generation’s light, not our parent’s icon that we grew to love and cherish. He was us, cool, together and hip like us. Sure, we ran home to learn how to become Fonzie, but we learned our humanity when Mork from Ork stole the show. With the sensitive touch of his comedy, he made every gay kid’s childhood that much better. One year, he had two movies hit the $100 million milestone in the same week in 1996’s “Jumanji” and “The Birdcage.” But no matter his wealth and fame, he gave it all back for the human condition and never shied away from his own life of drugs, alcoholism, rehab and his open-heart surgery. It was almost like he took on the mantle of being the cool older bro for many years.

Robin McLaurin Williams (July 21, 1951 – August 11, 2014) will, for most, be known as an American actor and stand-up comedian. His fame as the alien Mork in the TV series “Mork & Mindy” (1978–1982) had us craving for every moment of his time from then on. Voted “Least Likely To Succeed” in high school, in 1973 Williams was one of only 20 students accepted into the freshman class at Juilliard and one of only two students to be accepted by John Houseman into the Advanced Program at the school that year; the other was Christopher Reeve. Even in his beginning in 1974, when he auditioned for the role of Mork from Ork on “Happy Days,” producer Garry Marshall told him to sit down. Robin sat in the chair, but on his head. The obit will read Oscar-winning actor and comic Robin Williams, found dead Monday at his Northern California home, was beloved over his nearly four-decade career. A movie and television actor, voice artist and stand-up comedian, Williams’s notable roles include such beloved films as “Good Morning Vietnam,” “Dead Poets Society,” “Mrs. Doubtfire,” “The Birdcage,” and many others. Continued on page 23

Gay Hate strikes another down in his youth.

[Update Miguel Bautista Ramirez, was in court Monday for a felony settlement conference at Larson Justice Center, is accused of fatally shooting Juan Ceballos, a 20-yearold College of the Desert student. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for Sept. 5 The DDG will cover every aspect of this trial until justice has been served. If you have information you would like to share please contact us directly ] Juan Ceballos, 20, was a Desert Mirage High School graduate who was attending classes at College of the Desert and worked two jobs to support his family. At least until July 13, when he was murdered on the steps of his home, not because of anything he did but it is believed because of whom he was. What is worse, the cold blooded killer is accused of the most cowardly act of lying-in-wait. His act was to secretly hide and then ambush and kill a defenseless young man just because he was bisexual or gay or just different. A fund has been set up for Ceballos’s family at Wells Fargo. Call Joe Mota at (760) 347-3157 to donate. While they have a suspect in custody, a trial must be held and if this is a bashing in any way, shape, or form we must plead that the accusation sticks and a trial held. I write plead because it is up to the loved ones to decide and law enforcement to act on their wishes as well as the community. Everyone 28

is presumed innocent until proven guilty and we are just reporting what is currently known. But there is a history of bashing in the gay community and we can make a difference. We need to continue to support equality and equal protection based on sexual and gender orientation. Right now, the DDG and others are helping to build support for the local Trans-gender community so that we understand their needs and are better equipped to protect them. Thomi Clinton has generously offered his insight into the trans-gender community so that we may learn to protect all LGBTq folks. This is not to say anything about Ceballos’s orientation. That I do not even know, but he was killed in cold blood and the police have charged the killer(s) with a hate crime. Recently we reported a vandal’s attack of the Gay Veterans Memorial. There have been others and we continue to be marginalized here and all over the nation as gay rights increase. We do thank our many non-gay supporters and defenders as well. It is a well known that gay bashings are often an intentional back lash from our hard fought success in gay rights recognition. There is empirical evidence of this for centuries and we must be cautious not to dismiss any disturbance directed at the LGBT community or anti-gay actions or words. No matter how small or slight these are, It is up to us as a community to make sure justice is served.

Continued from page 25 But we also know he was consistent in his beliefs and politics. Williams’ roles helped push those issues of gay rights and same sex marriage forward before anyone else was even talking about it. In “Mrs. Doubtfire,” released in 1993, Williams played a cross-dressing nanny. And in “The Birdcage,” which came out in 1996, he was a gay father who made a fool out of a conservative senator. Politically, “Good Morning Vietnam” was a political anti-war epic poking fun at the military in a way that only those that served in the armed forces would be able to see, in the absurdity and often with the oxymoronic military intelligence breathing down our nation’s neck like a dirty old man eyeing a young girl. Even “Dead Poets Society” gave us a mission to stake out our own claim and make this our world. For those of us that did pick up part of that mantel, that engage in creating a more human world, one of tolerance and acceptance, he was the messiah I would have picked over most of the other prophets of humanity. I wish I got to thank him. He made me a better person, and I’m happy I got to see him in all his glory. Back on ORK This is Mork from Ork… Signing off… Nanu nanu…. Thanks for the Earth vaca!

WEEKLY GUIDE TO THE STARS ARIES: March 21 - April 20 That nasty spring air could bring out infantile tendencies. Don’t let a disagreement lead you to pick up your toys and go home. TAURUS: April 21 - May 19 You may have a verbal agreement in place, but that doesn’t mean you’re spoken for. Tell a potential prospect that you’re still all ears. GEMINI: May 20 - June 21 One moment you’re being summoned forward and the next you’re being shooed away. Evidently a superior’s left hand doesn’t know what the right hand is. CANCER: June 22 - July 22 You’ve been feeling better than usual. This makes you more driven and forceful albeit in your own subtly understated way.

40

LEO: July 23 - August 22 You could rekindle an old spark if you’d only let bygones be bygones. Pride is cold comfort when dealing with matters of the heart. VIRGO: August 23 - Sept. 22 Before discounting what you have to work with, take a closer look. You could be underestimating what the situation offers. LIBRA: Sept. 23 - October 22 Is someone on your side or not? Sometimes it’s the harshest critic who’s the most determined to see you succeed. SCORPIO: October 23 - Nov. 21 Skepticism can be healthy, but not now. You don’t want to ride the brake because it will only hinder progress. Push the pedal to the metal. SAGITTARIUS: Nov. 22 - Dec. 20

It’s best to say nothing if you can’t tell if people know what’s going on or not. You don’t want to be the one to spill the beans. CAPRICORN: Dec. 21 - Jan. 19 A recent spate of good fortune has put you in a forgiving spirit. Be sure to include yourself because you’ve been way too hard on yourself. AQUARIUS: Jan 20 - Feb. 18 You’d be justified in sidestepping a responsibility but that’s not your style. Even if it’s OK with a boss, you still have to answer to a higher authority: your conscience. PISCES: Feb 19 - March 20 Your love life should get a hearty boost. This provides you with the impetus needed to act on those romantic longings.

FOR BETTER, OR WORSE COMES TO ARTHUR NEWMAN THEATER “For Better, Or Worse” stars Rachel & Matthew Tyler in Palm Desert on August 31st at 2 PM PALM SPRINGS, CA – AUGUST 6, 2014 – Real-life husband and wife Broadway performers, Rachel Tyler and Matthew Tyler, will bring their cabaret concert “For Better, Or Worse” to the Arthur Newman Theater at the Joslyn Center in Palm Desert on Sunday, August 31, 2014 at 2 PM. Presented by Les Michaels’ Life Is A Cabaret Sundays In Summer Series, the show will feature songs and duets from a variety of genres with local musical director Joel Baker accompanying then on piano. A good percentage of “For Better, Or Worse” song material will be plucked from Broadway musicals, perhaps some from the long list of productions the couple has performed in, both alone and together, here in the US and in the West End in London. They’re combined credits are extensive and include: Miss Saigon; Mamma Mia; & Phantom Of The Opera, to name just a few. Rachel & Matthew will give the audience a fun look at the trials, tribulations and of course, the jubilations of married life - despite the fact they’ve only been married for 7 years. The amount of musical material available is endless and covers every angle and will undoubtedly hit a note with everyone in the audience. As presenter Les Michaels puts it, “with Rachel & Tyler’s talent and chemistry, you just can’t go wrong.” Pianist Joel Baker has played for numerous artists over this series last 5 years, and is pianist extraordinaire for two local weekly cabaret open mics hosted by Les as well. 50

JERSEY’S JOURNAL by Jersey Shore Once upon a time, there was a artist who created so many wonderful pieces of art. Art that would inspire others and make them happy. This kind of gift was not given to many. Then one day it was time to create more, and nothing came out. He was stifled creativity wise. He had nothing left to give. All he could do was sleep all day. Every time he tried to create something, anything, he’d stare at became blankness. Finally scraping himself up out of bed, the artist decided to get a new perspective on life maybe some sort of inspiration. Yet he still found nothing. Days have passed and the slump got worse. Every time he’d take steps to go forward, he’d fall behind three steps more. He decided to give up. He could just live and not have to spread inspiration. Even though something was missing in the artists life, he decided to just take each day as it came. There was a sense of loss, but he figured it would soon disappear, like the desire to create. While going through his day as usual he got detoured. His regular rou-

tine sent him to a new destination. It would be for a few days more before he was back on track. Days into his new path he noticed something. It wasn’t an amazing piece of art. It was a simple piece of paper hanging on a board. Nothing fancy, but to the artist it gave him inspiration. The inspiration he had lost and probably then some. Inspiration doesn’t have to be huge or sparkle or colorful. It just needs to be appropriate to that one person. We all give each other inspiration in many ways. Large or small, whether we realize it or not. We don’t have to be creative people, just ourselves and of course at the right place at the right time. And the universe has a plan to get us there when we are ready to be there. THE LAST WORD by George W. Zander All any of us have to do is read or watch what is or, better, is not going on in Washington DC to know that if we, as progressive folks, do not register and VOTE, we will be back in the times of “Game of Thrones” before our very eyes. And we will need lots of wolves and dragons to win our long-fought-for victories back after the conservatives get rid of anti-discrimination against the LGBT community. It can happen and will happen right here in our own 42nd Assembly District. A smart, young, savvy, and devoted School Board member, who is a mother of five children, has to have our full support. Karalee Hargrove has been fighting for our kids for many years. She is a 100% Equality candidate and has been endorsed by Equality California and Desert Stonewall Democrats. Her opponent is, by the word on his signs, a Conservative. He is Chad Mayes. He is a proud graduate of Liberty University. He would never pass the test of being on the side of equality for all of us. He has been endorsed by many conservative Republicans, of course. By winning, he is one step from the US Congress. Chad Mayes is endorsed by the following: Paul Cook, United States Congressman Gary Miller, United States Congressman Ken Calvert, United States Congressman; Bob Huff, Senate Republican Leader; Tom Berryhill, State Senator; Bill Emmerson, Former State Senator; Bill Leonard, Former State

Senator and BOE Member; Bob Dutton, Former State Senator; Curt Hagman, State Assembly Member; Diane Harkey, State Assembly Member; Frank Bigelow, State Assembly Member; Kristin Olsen, State Assembly Member; Brian Jones, State Assembly Member…and all of these listed are not fans of LGBT issues in Washington or Sacramento. Plan to meet her soon, and host a party with your friends to meet her. This is winnable with our grassroots efforts. Keep this graduate of Liberty University out of Sacramento. Since Jerry Falwell’s hateful rhetoric controls things at this school, we know what he has been taught, and will bring to this progressive district. To schedule a house party at your home, contact Karalee at campaign@karalee4assembly.com. Cheers!!
