Stars at the Break of Day Stars at the Break of Day, an original play by SmartLife Member Marjorie Ellen Rupert, is presented by the Willow Valley Players in conjunction with the opening of the Marlin and Doris Thomas Memory Center. The play is an uplifting story about enduring love and living with grace, humor, and gratitude, even in the final days of life. A woman visits her father in a rural nursing home and rekindles an old relationship when she meets a former love who is living there and dying of cancer. Humorous at times, and sometimes heartfelt, the play addresses end-of-life issues and recognizes that the people in our lives are the stars that shine for us — and continue to shine for us even when we can’t see them anymore. Concerns such as pain management, advance directives, and the unique challenges of dementia are addressed in the play. There will be a professional healthcare panel following the matinee on September 3, led by Lauren Renehan, MSW, CDP, Mission Director of the Marlin and Doris Thomas Memory Center. Khatia Buniatishvili Plays Liszt, Chopin, Prokofiev & Stravinsky Triumphant after the release of her 2011 recording dedicated to the music of Liszt, Georgian pianist Khatia Buniatishvili presented this recital at the Verbier Festival. It features music by Liszt (including his famous Sonata in B) and Chopin, the other great Romantic piano composer, before moving on to Stravinsky and Prokofiev, challenging works that seem effortless with Buniatshvili’s perfect technique. The toccata of Prokofiev’s very modern-sounding Sonata No. 7 recalls jazz, a spirit echoed in the enthusiastic humor of the three movements of Stravinsky’s Petrouchka. Exhibition On Screen: James McNeill Whistler Considered one of the great innovators of 19th century art, James McNeill Whistler was a contemporary of the Impressionists, much admired by Van Gogh and Manet. Boldly experimental and famously witty, he disrupted the conventions of Victorian society in pursuit of a new cult of beauty, creating “art for art’s sake” and earning himself a place in history. His most famous painting, Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1, commonly known as Whistler’s Mother, is a revered and often parodied portrait of motherhood.
Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1, 1871
Tate Britain is now holding the first major retrospective of Whistler in three decades, uniting world-famous masterpieces with rarely seen works. This is an unmissable chance to get to know this visually spectacular artist and the influence he's had on those who followed. Friday, October 2 at 10:00 a.m. Length: 1 hour, 30 minutes

Riccardo Chailly Conducts Prokofiev & Tchaikovsky — With the Filarmonica della Scala It would be hard to find a more picturesque backdrop for a classical music festival than Granada, Spain, where the Festival de Granada has attracted a panoply of stars every year since 1952. In this marquee 2023 concert, Riccardo Chailly leads the renowned Filarmonica della Scala in two symphonic masterworks at the Palace of Charles V, inside the Alhambra! They take on the final symphonies by two Russian greats: Prokofiev’s Seventh, imbued with bittersweet nostalgia, and Tchaikovsky’s Sixth, premiered just six days before his death, an enduring monument to the extraordinary emotional depths he was capable of expressing in music. Exhibition On Screen: Frida Kahlo Frida Kahlo is arguably the world’s favorite female artist — but who was she? Everyone knows her face, but who was the woman behind the bright colors, the big brows, and the floral crowns? Take a journey to discover this icon’s art and uncover the true story of her rebellious, passionate, and turbulent life. Making use of the latest technology to deliver previously unimaginable quality, this film looks at key works throughout Kahlo’s career, using letters she wrote to reveal her deepest emotions and the secrets and symbolism contained within her art. In addition to interviews with world experts and bonus footage from the curators of her blockbuster 2026 exhibition, this personal, intimate look offers privileged access to her works, home, and studio, and highlights the source of her feverish creativity and unmatched lust for life, beauty, and revolution. Tuesday, December 8 at 1:30 p.m. Length: 1 hour, 30 minutes
Vasily Petrenko Conducts Beethoven & Bruckner — With Elisabeth Leonskaja The Palace of Charles V, inside the world-famous Alhambra, plays host to this exceptional concert from the 2024 Festival de Granada, as the grande dame of Russian piano, Elisabeth Leonskaja, takes the stage with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Castilla y León and conductor Vasily Petrenko! Leonskaja shines in the solo role of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4 in G, full of innovative flourishes from its unassuming solo piano opening onward. Petrenko and the orchestra then move on to Bruckner’s Fourth, also known as the Romantic Symphony and perhaps the best-loved of his nine, a series of programmatic tableaux that evoke a medieval town at daybreak and chivalrous knights on horseback. A Salute to Veterans Proudly relive our nation’s history as you engage in an entertaining view of the role patriotic songs have played in our country’s wartime success. During this year’s Veterans Day program, the Veterans Council of Willow Valley Communities will host performer Fred Miller and his Lectures in Song: America at War. In this informative piano, song, and talk show, Fred takes us through the songs that every American child used to know (and should still know) while he demonstrates how each song’s patriotic roots can be found in the many conflicts that truly have made America “the land of the free and the home of the brave.” The program begins as Lancaster’s Vet 21 Salute Honor Guard “posts the colors” with Willow Valley Communities’ Here Comes Treble singing group presenting the national anthem. Other features include the awarding of Willow Valley Quilts of Valor to veterans who have been touched by war, and the “Recognition of Veterans Present” as they stand to their respective service anthems depicted on-screen. “In addition to painting, gardening is my passion. One day, my granddaughter wanted to help me water the flowers. My son-in-law captured the moment with his camera, and I wanted to transfer that special scene to my canvas.”

“College and graduate school exposed me to many means of expression, from pencil and ink drawing to acrylic and oil painting to photography, ceramics, and more. But not watercolor. That came after I retired. It’s become my favorite medium.”
“My work typically reflects my mood. When introspective, my art tends to be detailed and soft. When anxious or excited, I use bold strokes and bright colors. Drawing people and fantasy figures intrigues me the most.”

I am drawn to old buildings and water scenes and love soft and bright colors.” Robert A. Johnson “My first experience with watercolors was in sixth grade. Thirty-six years later I found that same enjoyment in my first adult watercolor class. Since then, I’ve taken additional classes and workshops, even painting with plein air groups.”

Beth Romanski “As a self-taught artist, I’m learning to follow my curiosity and enjoy the process. I’ve fallen in love with pastels; their vibrancy and immediacy let me work intuitively and ‘painterly.’ For this exhibition, I’ve been inspired by the landscapes around Willow Street.” Nancy Siler “I’m a new contemporary abstract artist using fluid acrylic paints. The process embraces experimentation, using layering, pouring, and unconventional tools for a result that feels both modern and elemental, reflecting nature’s own creative momentum.”

“Traveling has been a hobby and profession for me for many years. I enjoy capturing images of my travels through photography and pen and ink drawings. My art is both a means of preserving my memories and providing souvenirs of over 100 countries.”
“I embrace the challenge of combining my tendency to work for realism tempered by experimentation with more impressionistic techniques using a variety of interesting materials — from sea sponges to wet paper towels to a toothbrush.”

Kristin Witbeck Lee From the artist: My father is Haudenosaunee (Seneca), and my mother is a good old-fashioned WASP, so I grew up in two worlds. Nature is where I felt like an insider, in its language and complexity and flux. I was raised with an understanding that all things have their own being and sentience, that all is relationship, and human beings participate in the sacredness of our world by making beauty wherever possible, in everyday or ritual objects, and in seeking mutual connections within the cosmic Good Mind. I work with art and poetry as a way to make life into a sacrament, and I feel that residues of this creative process can live on and continue to inspire something unpredictable. Scenes from life or imagination inspire my paintings with oil, watercolor, or ink. I contemplate the object or situation or idea, then surrender to the conversation with it. The record of that experience lives on as my painting. I learned from contemporary artists, including Barkley Hendricks and Sasha Budayev; Slavic artists from the tradition of St. Petersburg; and artists inspired by Rudolf Steiner. My work is in private collections worldwide, has received several awards, and has been exhibited at the Van Der Plas Gallery, Ganondagan, and the Houston Museum of Fine Art. Most recently, it was featured in Cornelia, the journal of the Buffalo Institute for Contemporary Art. I have an art and nature sanctuary in Connecticut and teach small classes, and I continue my studies at the Bridgeview School of Fine Arts in New York City. Henry Coe Henry works in oils on a large and small scale and prefers to work en plein air as much as possible. Small works take a few hours, and large ones can take a few weeks. He likes to paint the lengthening shadows and lowering light that occur toward the end of day, or the softer light of early morning. Ideally, he wants his work to have a sense of light traveling through air in space. Having a palpable sense of air in a painting is very important to him. The light and shadow define the mundane objects of a landscape he sees as disappearing: small family farms or the rural industrial look that at one time was representative of many small towns. Henry received an MFA in painting from Maryland Institute College of Art. He began painting seriously on Maryland’s Eastern Shore while working as curator at the Academy of Arts and teaching at Chesapeake College. He was drawn to the flat land and big sky: a Dutch landscape quality of light reflected off the water back into the clouds. His work has been featured in American Artist magazine and in the book 100 Plein Air Painters of the Mid-Atlantic. Over the years, he’s shown regularly in galleries in Chicago, Houston, and Baltimore. Henry has worked primarily in the Mid-Atlantic region, coastal Maine, Texas, and western France. The Nation That Never Was: Reconstructing America’s Story There’s a common story we tell about America: that our country’s fundamental values were stated in the Declaration of Independence, fought for in the Revolution, and made law in the Constitution. But, with the country increasingly divided, this story isn’t working for us anymore — what’s more, it’s not even true. As Professor Roosevelt argues in this eye-opening reinterpretation of the American story, our fundamental values, particularly equality, are not part of the vision of the Founding Fathers. Instead, they were stated in Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address and were the hope of Reconstruction, when it was possible to envision the emergence of a nation committed to liberty and equality.

The Thanksgiving Dilemma: Reevaluating Our Annual Celebration The myth of Thanksgiving is powerful. American legend says that in autumn 1621, English Pilgrims shared a feast with Wampanoags, residents of the territory the Pilgrims labeled Plymouth. The good feelings of that meal soon faded when Native peoples and English colonists began to compete for resources, initiating conflicts that raged for generations. Yet the myth of coexistence endures to this day. President Lincoln declared the fourth Thursday of November to be a national holiday, with a nod to that early feast. But since 1970, many have believed it should be rededicated as a national day of mourning to reflect the centuries-long displacement and persecution of Native Americans. With the recent shift from Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples Day showing a changing national mood, is it time to reconsider Thanksgiving as well?

O N E D AY U N I V E R S I T Y How Music Shapes the Brain In this talk, Dr. Indre Viskontas, a neuroscientist and opera singer-director, illustrates the wide-ranging power of music to shape our brains, heal our pain, and strengthen our communities. The musician’s brain is hailed as a model of neuroplasticity because of the many ways that learning and performing music changes it. But even listeners’ brains are altered, as brain waves entrain to rhythms and brain activity and neurochemistry track the rise and fall of the music. Come hear Dr. Viskontas explain the magical way in which music can bring us together.

Eternal Egypt: From King Tut to the Arab Spring This two-part program will take you on a fascinating journey through 5,000 years of Egyptian civilization. We’ll begin by exploring the glories of ancient Egypt: the temples, tombs, and treasures that still have a powerful hold on our imaginations today. Less wellknown is the heritage of early Jewish and Christian life, which we can still see in the narrow lanes of Old Cairo. Finally, we’ll highlight the last millennium of Muslim rule in Egypt, which brought new challenges to this timeless land — culminating in the 2011 Arab Spring revolt. Part history, part travelogue, this program will give you a new appreciation for the beauty, grandeur, and lasting cultural impact of Eternal Egypt. Our Past Comes Alive In celebrating the anniversary of the birth of our nation, it is meaningful to consider how far we have come in 250 years. Reflecting on years past can bring a renewed sense of gratitude for the dedication and bravery of so many. Three talented men contributed to our early history with their pencils, brushes, and paint: Thomas Hart Benton, John Steuart Curry, and Grant DeVolson Wood. Each man had his own interests and approaches to his work, but all bequeathed generations to come with insights and reminders of how we struggled for our start and how determined the spirit of America was and still is.

The Ordinary Made Extraordinary: Thomas Hart Benton (1898–1975) Thomas Hart Benton had a strong ego and a stubborn nature. He refused to withhold his personal views on a variety of subjects, whether it be modern art, politics, racism, or fascism. Not only did he verbalize his opinions, he painted them! Yet during the decades leading up to World War II, he was acclaimed for his outstanding works depicting common people going about their ordinary lives.
Thomas Hart Benton, Cradling Wheat
Born in Missouri, Benton grew up in a family involved in politics and surrounded by the people and culture of America’s Midwest heartland. Smooth, bright colors and canvases filled with curving lines gave his works movement. And, he painted with meticulous detail at a rapid pace. Because of his choice of subject — the ordinary farm folks of the Midwest — he is considered an American Regionalist. He is best remembered for his immense murals that still grace many museums and public buildings. Tuesday, September 22

It Was Action He Loved Most: John Steuart Curry (1897–1946) If you never met anyone who ran away and joined the circus you are about to do just that. With his marriage on the rocks, and no end in sight to its difficulties, Nebraska artist John Steuart Curry joined the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. During his extended absence, his wife died. All his life did not bring quite that level of upheaval, but it certainly had peaks and valleys. Part of a threesome known in the 1930s–40s as Regionalist artists, Curry portrayed life on the Great Plains as he saw it and as it was. His works are sometimes raw but always thought-provoking and full of action. For him, painting the truth mattered the most. His paintings, murals, and illustrations/ posters clearly reveal that life on the Plains could be grim and challenging. Tuesday, September 29

Bringing Assurance to Our Nation: Grant DeVolson Wood (1891–1942) Chickens and oak leaves flowed through Grant Wood’s works all his life. They reminded him of his beginnings living on a farm in rural Iowa. He even won a national art contest award for a drawing of oak leaves. Wood made four trips to Europe between 1922 and 1928 to study the works of the masters and check on the latest art trends. But he came home believing that his “best ideas came to him while he was milking cows.” Classified as a Regionalist artist, his work never shows the sweat and toil of farm life, but rather the refreshing undulation of hills covered with rows of crops, the pleasant, winding rural roads, and the peace that comes from a simple life. Wood’s work brought calm and reassurance of better times to come to many Americans as they struggled through the dark days of want and insecurity during the Great Depression.

Harland Sanders
Milton Bradley
What do Milton Bradley, Harland Sanders, and Michael Jordan, an unlikely trio, have in common? They’re each associated with market-changing consumer products that bear their influence. Bradley launched the board game industry. Abe Lincoln played a role in that development, but how? Sanders, a gradeschool dropout, had a checkered work history with occupations such as ferry operator, lawyer, and gas station owner. How did he get to be a “colonel”? Jordan, perhaps the greatest basketball player ever, did not wear Air Jordans when he played for the University of North Carolina. He wore the best-selling and most popular basketball shoe of all time — what was it? Get the answers in this presentation, along with intriguing details of the products these individuals represent. Missouri’s “River Rat” Artist: George Caleb Bingham Born in Virginia, George Caleb Bingham (1811–1879) moved to Franklin, Missouri, when he was 8. His father, a successful tobacco farmer, caught himself in an ill-fated business practice, challenging weather, and finally death, and by age 12, Bingham was working as a janitor to help support his family. However, his driving spirit ultimately led to his success, as he became one of the 19th century’s most outstanding historical artists, a fine statesman, and an officer during the Civil War. Growing up along the banks of the Missouri River provided endless subject matter for Bingham’s paintings and sketches. With little training, he first became a sought-after portraitist, then also a highly respected artist of life along the Missouri, Mississippi, and Ohio Rivers. To study his work is to experience the joy of simpler times, the colorful characters who lived them, and the amazing talent of an exceptional American artist.

Undiscovered Country: The Science Behind End-of-Life Healthcare In this presentation, Dr. David E. Cowall explores end-of-life healthcare. Beginning with Dame Cicely Saunders’s pioneering hospice movement, he covers the Medicare Hospice Benefit and its eligibility criteria, explains why hospice patients often live longer, and reviews leading causes of death. Key themes include what dying patients want — dignity, peace, family, and freedom from suffering — versus systemic barriers like futile care, clinician discomfort with palliative transitions, and financial pressure favoring aggressive treatment. This talk traces the dying process through its stages, from early withdrawal to imminent death, and closes with the “tasks of the dying”: forgiveness, love, and goodbye. Helping Those Who Hurt: How a Lancaster Veteran Helps Vets in Need Few Americans can understand how the memories and scars of war often last a lifetime — and how they can tragically affect the everyday lives of the many ex-warriors among us. This presentation shows how sharing one’s inner self through poetry, songwriting, and storytelling can bring new self-assurance and peace to veterans in need. Our presenter is Scott Hower, a Lancaster veteran who founded WriteFace, a nonprofit that provides free creative classes to veterans and their families and caregivers. He’ll also explain how he uses the self-discovery of interactive workshops to assist thousands in regaining their lives. Plus, we’re pleased to announce that several of Scott’s WriteFace students will be present to share their own personal stories. This event is sponsored by the Veterans Council.
