“The crew from NaturaLawn were great to work with! After several applications, reseeding, composting, the lawn was already starting to look so much better. Years later, you would never realize it was the same lawn. Our grass looks lush and we rarely have weeds.”

FOR NATURALAWN, LAURIE KUBAL

“Their crews are all long time employees, not contractors and they are gentlemen and ladies. Manor Works did an amazing total job: power washed the entire home using Simple Green; a base coat and two final coats, each hand brushed in. The result was quite spectacular! We could not be more pleased.”

FOR MANORWORKS PAINTING, TOM REYNOLDS

“Tommy’s honesty, hard work ethic, outstanding customer service, and attention to detail all lead to the best possible outcome. Tommy will work with you to provide unique and creative solutions to your home improvement needs, and he will absolutely assure that you are satisfied with the finished product. His employees produce quality work and will strive to meet deadlines and exceed expectations.”

FOR ACCOMMODATIONS HOME SERVICE, THE MORELAND FAMILY

Congrats to Brittany Johnson, this month’s $100 Visa Gift Card winner. All featured testimonials are automatically entered into the monthly drawing.

“Dr. Niu is incredibly kind, patient, and genuinely caring, which immediately puts both me and my kids at ease. My kids love being able to stay homeespecially when they are feeling under the weather - and the visits feel calm and unrushed.”

THE PEOPLE WHO SHAPE US

A reflection on the quiet influence of the people, relationships, and community that help us grow.
“We are shaped and fashioned by those we love.”
JOHANN WOLFGANG VON GOETHE

Hello, Willowsford Community Residents,

March always feels like a bridge month — not quite winter, not fully spring — a season of transition. It’s in these in-between moments that I’m often reminded how much of who we are has been shaped by the people who’ve walked beside us.

Some of that influence is obvious: parents, partners, lifelong friends. But much of it is quieter — teachers who believed in us early

on, neighbors who offered encouragement at just the right time, mentors who led by example, and the everyday interactions that make us feel seen and supported. We are constantly shaped by those around us, often in ways we don’t fully realize until later.

March also brings Women’s History Month, a meaningful reminder of the countless women — in our families, workplaces, and community — whose strength, care, and leadership have shaped the lives around them. Often, their influence shows up not in headlines, but in everyday acts of guidance, resilience, and support.

That’s part of what makes community so powerful. Living in Willowsford means being surrounded by people who contribute to each other’s lives in meaningful ways — through friendships, shared experiences, volunteer efforts, local events, and simple daily kindness. The stories in this issue highlight neighbors who are making a difference, following passions, supporting others, and strengthening the fabric of the community we call home.

As you flip through these pages, I hope you’ll think about the people who have shaped your journey — and the ways you might be shaping someone else’s right now. A kind word, an introduction, a helping hand, or simply showing up can have a bigger impact than we ever know.

And of course, Stroll Willowsford wouldn’t be possible without our Preferred Providers, many of whom are your own neighbors. They invest in this community alongside you, helping us share these stories and stay connected. When you need a local service or product, I encourage you to support them and share your experiences with your neighbors. Word of mouth is one of the most meaningful ways we our local businesses and relationships.

Here’s to the people who have shaped us — and to the role we each play in shaping this wonderful community.

Best, Traci

Lucky in Willowsford + Election and Annual Meeting

Willowsford HOA Lifestyle Director

With St. Patrick’s Day around the corner, we’re reminded why those who live in Willowsford are among the luckiest in the region. Whether it’s the scenic beauty, unparalleled amenities, or close-knit neighborhood bonds, Willowsford truly is a place where residents can count themselves among the “lucky.”

Top-Notch Amenities & Service: Willowsford isn’t just about natural beauty—it’s also about exceptional amenities. With impressive clubhouses, pools and parks, the community offers countless ways for residents to stay active and engaged. Willowsford Farm provides residents with fresh produce and connects them to sustainable farming practices, promoting wellness and healthy living.

Sustainability & Eco-Friendly Initiatives: Another factor that adds to the “luck” of residents is the community’s dedication to sustainability and eco-conscious living. Willowsford’s commitment to environmental stewardship can be seen in the design of the homes, management of green spaces, and the unique farm-to-table initiatives offered.

Close-Knit Social Network: In addition to all the tangible benefits of living in Willowsford, the community’s social network is another key factor that makes it so fortunate. From neighborhood clubs to fitness classes, dinner parties, and interest-based groups, there’s

always an opportunity to meet new people and forge lasting friendships. The ease of making meaningful connections is part of what makes living in Willowsford so special. For many, it’s not just a neighborhood, but an extended family.

The “luck” of the Irish is often seen as being about chance, fortune, and good things happening unexpectedly. But for those who live in Willowsford, luck is more than just chance—it’s the result of thoughtful planning, community engagement, and a shared commitment to making this neighborhood a truly special place to call home.

HOA Board Election and Annual Meeting – March 18, 2026

You have the opportunity to be fully engaged in planning how the community moves forward by voting in the Board of Directors election! We have five interested candidates for three Board positions – please vote before Noon on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, and come to the HOA’s Annual Meeting at 5:30pm to hear all of the past year’s activities and plans for 2026!

Traditional Irish Toasts

To Luck: “May you have all the happiness and luck that life can hold”

To Friendship: “My friends are the best friends, loyal, willing and able”

To Love: “I have known many, and liked not a few, but loved only one, and this toast is to you”

To the Future: “May the best day of your past be the worst day of your future”

LOOKING AHEAD

Maintenance & prep

The Willowsford Operations Team is excited for the upcoming season. Through our continued partnerships with the Conservancy, Down to Earth Landscaping, and SavATree, we remain committed to preserving the beauty and long-term sustainability of HOA-owned land throughout the community. By utilizing a carefully planned Maintenance Task List, we can proactively schedule work, prioritize resources, and ensure an efficient and productive season.

Sustainability Efforts

Spring brush hogging provides several important benefits, including allowing native grasses to naturally reseed for the next growing season, maintaining open space habitats throughout the year, and supporting wildlife by preserving natural cover. This is completed in March, done once a year and in coordination with the conservancy. Plant selection also plays a key role in sustainability. By choosing drought-resistant and heat-tolerant species, we reduce water usage while continuing to enhance the overall appearance of the community. In addition, consistent pruning and targeted treatments help preserve the health of community and open-space trees.

Trash Policing of Common Areas Year-Round

LET’S TALK TRASH

On Friday, March 20th, community members are invited to come together for Willowsford Conservancy’s fourth annual Let’s Talk Trash clean-up event, taking place from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. In past years, hundreds of volunteers have come together to make a huge impact. In 2024, participants collected an impressive 986.5 pounds of trash from around the community. In 2025, volunteers followed up with another incredible effort, removing 743.49 pounds of litter. These numbers highlight both the ongoing need for cleanup and the dedication of the community members who step up year after year.

This year’s Let’s Talk Trash event will take place on a day when Loudoun County Public Schools are closed, making it an ideal opportunity for students to get involved. High school students can earn volunteer hours, while younger children can learn the value of environmental stewardship and community service by taking part alongside friends and family. During the event, volunteers will sign up for specific zones to collect trash in each of the four Villages. In their zone, volunteers are encouraged to search for and collect trash along main roads, residential streets, open space, amenity areas, and trails, as well as catchment spots like culverts, fence lines, ponds, and tree lines. Cleaning up these less visible areas helps protect local wildlife, improve water quality, and maintain the natural beauty that makes Willowsford special.

Supplies such as trash bags will be provided at check-in locations in each of the Villages, making it easy for participants to jump in and help. Then in each Village, there will be a drop-off spot to collect all trash. All are welcome to participate, including nonresidents. Scan the QR code to learn more about this event and sign up to participate.

Early Risers on the Forest Floor: Spring Ephemerals

As winter loosens its grip on Virginia’s forests, a brief but beautiful display unfolds on the forest floor starting around the end of March, continuing through April. Spring ephemerals —some of our earliest wildflowers—emerge, bloom, and disappear all within a matter of weeks. These plants are perfectly adapted to take advantage of a very narrow window of time where conditions are just right. They grow and flower before trees leaf out and shade the ground, allowing the spring ephemerals to soak up ample sunlight, moisture, and nutrients before other plants fully emerge.

What sets spring ephemerals apart from other blooms we see later in the season is their urgency. Unlike summer wildflowers that may bloom for months, ephemerals live fast. By late spring, their leaves wither away, and the plants retreat underground, storing energy in their root systems until the next year. Catching them at peak bloom is a true reward of early spring.

One of the most widespread ephemerals in Virginia is spring beauty (Claytonia virginica ). These delicate flowers, with white to pale pink petals striped in darker veins, often blanket moist woods, floodplains, and stream banks. Look for them in rich, loamy soils where water drains well but remains available in early spring.

Trout lily (Erythronium americanum ) is another forest favorite, easily recognized by its mottled leaves that resemble the patterning of a brook trout. Its stunning

yellow flowers appear in deciduous forests with deep leaf litter, often on slopes or in well-drained soils. In wetter woodland areas and along creeks, Virginia bluebells (Mertensia virginica ) put on one of spring’s most iconic and well-known shows. Their clusters of bell-shaped flowers shift from pink buds to brilliant blue as they mature, creating a striking contrast against the still-bare forest. One of our favorite spots to view these wildflowers is along Bull Run in The Greens.

You may also spot mayapple (Podophyllum peltatum ), which forms dense colonies in shady woods. While its umbrella-like leaves are easy to notice, its single white flower often hides beneath the foliage. Later in the season, that flower gives way to a small, apple-like fruit, which is a delicious treat for box turtles.

Spring ephemerals are tightly linked to early-season pollinators. Native bees, including mining bees and mason bees, are among their most important visitors, along with hoverflies and small beetles. These insects emerge early and rely on ephemerals as some of the first sources of nectar and pollen after winter. If you’re exploring Virginia’s forests this spring, slow down and look at your feet for these short-lived beauties, and consider joining us for our Spring Wildflower Walk on April 12th. Service That Changes Perspective

How Young Men’s Service League turns volunteering into leadership, connection, and impact.

“You will never know how much you have, until you’re in the perspective of those who don’t.” As a privileged student myself, I never realized how much I truly have until I started giving back to the community through the Young Men’s Service League and seeing the struggles others go through on a daily basis.

YMSL is a nationally recognized, competitive organization that empowers young men to become leaders through service. Members have the opportunity to participate in a variety of community service projects, ranging from local charities and initiatives to mentoring programs and fundraising events. Young Men’s Service League is traditionally a four-year program, meaning rising 9th graders are encouraged to apply as early as possible. This ensures four years to spread out the volunteer work. However, upperclassmen are eligible to join, but make-up hours may be required.

Beyond giving back, YMSL offers high school students the chance to develop leadership skills by planning and leading service projects, organizing teams, and collaborating with peers across the region. Some benefits and incentives of YMSL include guaranteed hours of service work, ensuring a graduation cord for volunteer work, and awards. Awards are given to students going above and beyond, and are extremely easy to stack up. For example, volunteers who give even five hours over the minimum hours requirement are given awards. Higher awards or leadership are extremely beneficial to college applications in showing service and initiative.

Some local events that YMSL participates in are serving at Dulles South Food Pantry and Mobile Hope, which are organizations that address food poverty in our area. Some other organizations like UpSide Down Moments and Ashburn Senior Center are great opportunities

to get involved in volunteering work. Committing to certain philanthropies can even build connections and allow students to network with organizations. Finally, a major part of YMSL is the mother-son relationship that is built. In YMSL it is required that you must volunteer a certain amount with your mom, building lasting relationships while doing service in the community.

YMSL meetings take place about every month, giving an opportunity for students to meet other students and build longlasting relations. It is a great opportunity to make new friends and even participate in volunteer events with others. It’s a win-win for mothers as well as it allows mothers and sons to bond throughout adolescent years, which is vital during high school before students are off to college, plus it allows mothers to meet other parents.

Joining YMSL is more than just volunteer hours, but it’s a way to build

lasting relationships, gain experience for college applications, and create a large impact in your community. Whether you’re passionate about helping others, looking to expand your network, or hoping to strengthen your leadership abilities, YMSL provides the platform to turn your dedication into meaningful action.

Some of my favorite moments were seeing veterans’ faces light up when we greeted them at the airport, and I personally love volunteering at the Dulles Food pantry, as it opens my eyes to realize how students my age and younger struggle with basic needs like food.

So...Attention: all high schoolers interested in volunteer opportunities to meet graduation requirements, earn awards, hold region-wide leadership roles, and make a difference in the community. This is your reminder to join Young Men’s Service League (YMSL)!”

“Kaiden and I agree on what we enjoy most about YMSL - it is all the people we get to meet and help out.”

RESIDENT CANDY (MOM)

“I love volunteering with AART. It’s fun to help the children learn skills to get ready for Kindergarten.”

RESIDENT BENNETT ROHR

“I love helping the community, it’s great to see the immediate impact we’re having.

RESIDENT ADAM KESSELER

“Volunteering with YMSL is something meaningful Adam and I can do together. We’ve especially enjoyed volunteering with the Special Olympics and Ashby Senior Center.”

RESIDENT KRISTEN KESSELER (MOM)

“We love going to Ashby Ponds to play games with the elderly and encourage the swimmers with Special Olympics”

RESIDENT ARYAN ROY

“There’s nothing better than serving alongside my son! YMSL has introduced us to incredible local communities we didn’t even realize were so close and in need. This mother-son organization gives families the chance to grow together through service, leadership, and compassion—it’s been such a powerful experience for both of us!”

THE BIG APPLE, BIG FUN

Trains, shows, landmarks, and kid-approved fun in New York City.

BY RESIDENT AND JUNIOR WRITER

SCARLETT TAYLOR

THIS FEATURE SPONSORED BY BA EXTERIORS

Have you been wondering where to bring your family on your next family vacation or weekend getaway? I have an answer, New York City! New York, also known as the Big Apple, is in my opinion, magical! If you want to go to New York and need some ideas for you and your family, I can give you some!

Lots of people drive to New York, which can be fun, but did you know what else is really fun? The train! The train is a quick and easy option for any long trip, really. You can take the train right into the center of the city!

There are so many fun things to do! Maybe you choose some historic sites, like the New York City Public Library, Alexander Hamilton’s Grave, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, or the 9/11 Memorial and Museum. Did you know that anyone can jump on the Staten Island Ferry? It’s a great way to catch views of the city and the Statue of Liberty. Entertainment is easy in New York! I recommend a Broadway Show, like Harry Potter and the Cursed Child or Wicked! There’s also an easy subway trip to a New York Mets game or a brief walk to Madison Square Garden for sporting events and concerts. While you’re there, don’t forget some of the kid favorites, like FAO Schwartz and the Lego store (it’s so cool to just look at all the builds!).

I hope this persuades you to schedule your next family vacation to New York, and if you do, soak up every moment.

pediatric housecalls

BRINGING PERSONALIZED PEDIATRIC CARE HOME

BY

For families in Willowsford, pediatric care is now closer to home— literally— thanks to Nina Niu, MC FAAP, a fellow Willowsford resident and a partner with Pediatric Housecalls. Dr. Niu’s passion for her field shines through when she says, “I truly love working with children and their families. Childhood is such an important time—kids are still growing into who they’ll become, and what we do early on can shape their health, confidence, and habits for a lifetime.”

After more than a decade as a primary care pediatrician in Chantilly, Dr. Niu realized, “So much of pediatrics is education and reassurance—helping parents understand what’s normal, guiding development, and supporting families through everything from first fevers to big emotional transitions.” Such moments cannot be hurried. Drawing from her experiences, Dr. Niu partnered with Pediatric Housecalls to provide care that prioritizes meaningful time with families, fosters stronger personal relationships, and ensures a comfortable setting. “I can sit with a family, answer questions thoroughly, and help kids feel comfortable in their own space—without the stress of getting everyone out the door when someone is already sick. I’m excited to bring that kind of care to Willowsford families.”

Families notice the benefits of house calls right away. This approach transforms the atmosphere and flow of pediatric care, making visits more relaxed, personalized, and typically much more convenient. Additionally, there’s no added exposure to other illnesses, which is especially important during cold and flu season.

“Kids are also noticeably more comfortable at home. They can stay on the couch, stay in bed, or sit with a parent in their favorite spot, and that comfort often makes the visit smoother and less stressful.”

She brings everything needed for a thorough visit. “Parents are often surprised by how much I can bring into the home. I travel with equipment and testing supplies that allow me to evaluate and treat most common pediatric concerns—similar to what families would expect in a sick visit office appointment or urgent care, just in a much calmer environment.”

It’s as if Dr. Niu rolls out a pop-up pediatric clinic at your very doorstep, seamlessly merging the warmth of home with the standards of a doctor’s office. Each visit transforms an ordinary living room into a space of expert care and attentive reassurance. Trust grows quickly in this setting, as Dr. Niu shares, “I’ve had visits where a child was shy, uncomfortable, or even scared at first, but once they realized they were safe at home, they relaxed. By the end of the visit, they were chatting with me, showing me their favorite toy, or asking questions about what I was doing.” She adds, “I’ve also had families schedule a visit for one child, and a sibling suddenly becomes sick or gets injured that same day. Being able to say, ‘Of course—let’s check them too,’ can be a huge relief for parents. It saves them from having to make another appointment, rearrange schedules again, or head to urgent care.”

Some parents worry that house call pediatric care is a luxury, but Dr. Niu clarifies, “One of the biggest misconceptions is that house call pediatric care is ‘concierge-only’ or extremely expensive. In reality, most commercial insurance plans cover the visit just like a traditional office visit. I do charge a small convenience fee based on travel distance, but there is no membership fee, and for families in Willowsford, the travel fee is quite low.”

Continuity is a cornerstone of her approach. “When a child and parent feel comfortable with their pediatrician, visits become easier, conversations become more honest, and care becomes more personalized. With house calls, I’m able to spend more time during

“The convenience of having an in-home pediatrician is truly unmatched for me and my kids. The care goes above and beyond anything we’ve experienced in a traditional office setting. Dr. Niu is incredibly kind, patient, and genuinely caring, which immediately puts both my kids and me at ease. My kids love being able to stay home - especially when they are feeling under the weather - and the visits feel calm and unrushed. Scheduling is so easy, and what truly sets her apart is how she checks on my kids afterward to make sure they’re doing well. This level of personal, thoughtful care means so much to our family. We are so grateful for Dr. Niu of Pediatric Housecalls.”

each visit—often 20–40 minutes— so families don’t feel rushed. We can address more than one concern, and I can answer the questions parents often save for next time,” she says. “I also stay connected afterward. Families can text me with follow-up questions, updates, or concerns, which helps parents feel supported and helps me guide them appropriately without unnecessary worry or extra appointments. Over time, that relationship builds trust—and that trust helps kids open up more, parents ask better questions, and we can work together to support a child’s overall health and development.”

Being featured in Stroll Willowsford is especially meaningful for Dr. Niu. “Willowsford is a large community, and families are busy—between school, sports, work, and everything else. Being featured in Stroll is a meaningful way to connect with neighbors on a personal level and help families understand that pediatric house calls are an option right here in the community. It allows parents to recognize my name and feel more comfortable reaching out when their child is sick, injured, or needs a sports physical. I love the idea of being a familiar, trusted resource for Willowsford families—and I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve this community.” By delivering state-of-the-art pediatric services right where families feel most at ease, Dr. Niu bridges the gap between convenience and comprehensive medical attention—truly redefining what it means to “bring care home.”

Is This Spring The Time to Make A Move? Real Estate

Is spring really the right time to think about moving in Willowsford?

Michelle: Absolutely! Spring is often the perfect window for sellers here.

Deborah: That’s right. Buyers who have been waiting all winter suddenly become active. Families want to move before the new school year, and homes just look their best with beautiful landscaping, plenty of natural light, and undeniable curb appeal.

Michelle: Plus, inventory is usually limited, especially in early spring, which means your home really stands out. When demand is high and competition is low, well-prepared homes often get multiple offers, strong contract terms, and top-of-market pricing.

Deborah: And this year, there’s another key factor: mortgage rates. They’re projected to dip below 6% (potentially 5.5% to 5.75% by mid-2026) but could rise again later. Listing during this window can attract buyers eager to lock in a lower rate, which can lead to faster sales and stronger offers.

Michelle: Exactly. So while spring is already a high-demand season in Willowsford, the potential for lower rates makes timing even more important.

Deborah: Of course, timing alone isn’t enough. Homes that are staged, professionally photographed, and strategically priced perform best. And having the right Realtor makes a big difference, guiding you through every step and helping you position your home to get the most out of the market. Preparation and expert guidance is what really allows you to take full advantage of a market like this.

Michelle: So, if you’re thinking about selling, now is the time to start planning. Get your home ready early spring so you can list at the ideal moment and maximize your sale.

Deborah: And if you want guidance on exactly how to prep your home or understand how the market and rates could impact your sale, reach out to us. We’d love to help you make the most of this spring window and get your home sold for the best possible price.

Peverills MEET THE

DIFFERENT ROOTS, ONE FAMILY

The Peverill family has happily called the Grant neighborhood of Willowsford home for the past six years. Their bustling household includes six children, Thaddeus (now an adult), Colleen (17), Frank (15), Steele (12), and twins Maeve and Lydia (12)—along with two gentle giant Saint Bernedoodles who complete the family. While each child has their own personality and interests, one thing they all agree on is their love of warm weather and time spent poolside in the family’s backyard. It’s a favorite gathering spot and a true oasis

for this blended family. “Our triplets are thick as thieves,” Michelle shares. “We all love getting outside—especially exploring the Willowsford trails. No matter the weather, the kids are usually out romping around the Grant with friends.”

The couple first met in Ashburn, where what began as a friendship between parents with children the same age quickly grew into something more. Today, Michelle describes them as one “big, blended family,” with their first—and most meaningful— home together being Willowsford.

Todd spent more than 30 years as a co-owner of Pev’s Paintball and recently launched Monumental Pest Control with longtime friend Chadd Edwards. Chadd approached Todd, knowing his strong business background, but this new venture goes far beyond entrepreneurship. Monumental Pest Control was built with philanthropy at its core. Todd’s mother and best friend are breast cancer survivors, and Chadd’s wife is currently battling brain cancer. A portion of the company’s sales supports

breast and brain cancer foundations, a mission deeply personal to both.

Michelle works from home, allowing her to balance a full family life with her career. She serves as a Director at Chartis Federal, a local government contractor based in Leesburg, Virginia. Together, Todd and Michelle are grateful to be raising their family in a community that feels both connected and supportive.

When they’re able to get away, one of the family’s favorite vacation spots is Carova Beach in the Outer Banks. They love the ability to drive directly onto the sand, where you can spot wild horses roaming freely. The secluded setting offers the perfect escape and a special place to slow down and spend quality time together.

Todd and Michelle are also deeply involved with the charity Rally 2 Give, raising funds year-round to support organizations that serve children with special needs, a mission especially meaningful to Michelle, who previously worked as an ABA therapist supporting children with autism before transitioning

into the corporate world. Each year, they participate in the rally by driving their Nissan GTR as Team Godzilla, blending their shared love of cars and road rallies with a greater purpose.

As the couple reflects, “We’re in a season of life filled with teenagers, constant motion, and an impressive amount of food where the fridge is never full for long, the house is always loud, and love shows up in shared meals, late nights, and everyday chaos. And we wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Strings, Sparkles, & Surprise Songs!

Music, magic, and moments that made this concert one for the books.

ON SATURDAY, November 22nd my dad and I arrived at DPAC (Durham Performing Arts Center), a theater in Durham, North Carolina for a Lindsey Stirling concert. Lindsey Stirling is a violinist who plays many types of upbeat music genres and has dancers with her in the show. We headed to dinner beforehand to a restaurant right next to DPAC called Nana’s Steakhouse. The restaurant actually had a great perk - since they are right next to DPAC, they will put your leftovers in their fridge and will keep it for you until after the show! We got to the show after dinner, and I was very surprised by how fast it was to get into the theater because of how long the line was. By the time we got inside and all of our snacks, we headed right over to the merch stand. When we got to the front of the long line, I asked for a concert shirt and a poster. The

concert was so great, she played some of my favorite songs like, You’re a Mean One, Mister Grinch with Sabrina Carpenter’s vocals, and Guardian. This night was probably the best night of my life. My favorite part was when she played Guardian since it was a surprise song and also my favorite song. At one point, she brought up the house lights and commented on peoples’ constumes. She also look at one guy and asked, “Why is the devil at my Christmas concert?” He then shouted back, “I’M KRAMPUS!” She laughed and continued on with the show. I am so grateful for being able to go, and super grateful for my dad, who made this happen for us.

We could also earn them by playing fun games. We made holiday cards for residents at Morningside House Senior Living. We had a gingerbread cookie decorating contest, with raffle tickets for most realistic, most creative, and most festive. In addition to the supplies for the contest and the yummy cookies, we also had delicious

treats, all provided by and made by Mrs. Leah, a Junior Writer mom who owns The Inventive Baker. We did a white elephant exchange, and at the end of the night we were excited to see how much food we had collected for Loudoun Hunger Relief. FINDING MY SPARK AT SUMMER IN THE ARTS

A creative, confidence-building program for rising middle and high school students.

Summer in the arts is a program for kids who are looking to expand their creative talents and skills. This program is for rising sixth graders to tenth graders. SIA is held at Briar Woods High School. The program includes a free bus ride. Mine picked me up at Hovatter Elementary, but it could be different for some of you. This program includes a variety of classes, including theatre, instrumental, vocal music, visual arts, robotics, maker space, cooking, baking, and more!

My mom signed me up for Summer In The Arts. The classes she signed me up for were Creative Writing, Cooking, Dance, and Band. When I got on the bus, I remember having a flood of thoughts. “Was I going to like it? Who was going to be there? Was I going to learn anything?” When we got to the school, I usually went to creative writing first. We got to write our own story, and it was sort of peaceful. When I got to cooking, I was really happy. Cooking was my favorite thing to do. We cooked so many

foods such as grilled cheese, French toast, cinnamon roll casserole, and blueberry muffins! I also made a friend named Izzy. She was on the same bus as me, and she was also in my cooking and dance class. Me and Izzy always walked together to cooking and dance. When we got to dance, usually we did some stretches, then practiced for the big performance at the end of the two weeks. After dance, we went to lunch, and we always had this one spot that we always ate at. My last block, band, was probably the shortest. I play the clarinet, so I squeaked a lot, but this was an opportunity to learn and have fun so I learned to play correctly. This experience was so fun and life-changing. Overall, this camp is awesome, and I would totally recommend it to rising sixth graders because of the opportunity for you to do it over and over throughout the years. But really, any of you can do it if you believe.

Market Magic at Gilbert’s Corner

From kettle corn to coffee, a cozy weekend market worth the stop.

On Saturdays and Sundays at Gilbert’s Corner from 10 am to 3:30 pm, there is a small farmer’s market with many different stands to shop at. The number of vendors differs between weeks; when we went there were 11 different stands.

The first stand we went to was Big Kyle Barbeque, which has been going to this farmers market for about 15 years and are there every week.

They sell many different barbecue meats and sides. Everything was fresh and smelled delicious!

The next stand was Fun Country Kettle Corn, which has been around for 20 years and has been going to this farmer’s market for about 15 years. It is a family business that has been passed down for generations. They sell different flavors of popcorn, kettle corn, and fresh honey. Their newest flavor is cinnamon kettle corn.

The third stand we visited was a pastry shop called Arno’s, which was started 12 years ago by a former pastry chef at the French Embassy and sells macarons, pain au chocolat, pain au raisin, quiche Lorraine, and vegetarian quiche.

Two stands next to each other were Bluemont Coffee & Little Apple Pastry Shop. Bluemont Coffee sells many brews of coffee, matcha, tea, lemonade, and mochas. It is around every single week at Gilbert’s Corner, year-round. Bluemont Coffee also sells bags of whole coffee beans, which are freshly roasted every week, and can be ground if preferred, in 12 oz or 32 oz bags. Little Apple Pastry Shop, which is 31 years old, used to have a store in downtown Aldie, but the building needed to be renovated, so now they go to farmers’ markets all over Virginia, but will be at Gilbert’s Corner every Saturday and Sunday. They sell freshly baked cookies, hand pies, sausage breakfast sandwiches, pumpkin bread, and scones. They also sell a variety of butters, including pumpkin butter, blackberry butter, and apple butter. Both vendors were super friendly and even gave me some samples!

Some of the other stands included Angelic Beef Butcher, selling a variety of different cuts of meat; Uchu Sauce, selling homemade hot sauces; Nappe, offering made to order wraps, tacos, and empanadas; Mid Atlantic Poultry Farm, with fresh eggs, deviled eggs, fresh chicken, charcuterie boards, artisanal seasonings, and various types of cheeses (you can ask for samples); Flower Fusion, which sold handmade jewelry, friendship

bracelets, crochet hats, bejeweled teddy bears, crochet purses, and live plants; and Rodriguez produce, which sold many varieties of fresh fruits and vegetables.

Gilbert’s Corner is a fun stop for shopping or grabbing lunch. There are a variety of foods and products offered by these local friendly vendors really close to home!

Both of us play flag football with Aim High Flag Football league; Aim High is affiliated with the NFL Flag organization. Our family has spent 8+ Spring/Fall seasons in this league, and we’re here to tell you about it.

Presley: I have played six seasons of flag football. My coaches have been Coach Paul Troth and Coach Jimmy Vo. Both of these coaches were amazing and wanted to see our team get better. I play in an all-girls flag league. When I started, I was in elementary school, and most of the girls were just learning about football,

so the competition was not very hard as there were only 3 all girls teams. Now, the competition is much harder, and this past Spring season, there were 9 teams in my age group. It’s great to see that girls’ flag football has increased in popularity in just the last few years. I’m proud to say I have won three Super Bowls with my team, the Atlanta Falcons! My team has also played in a tournament hosted by Aim High, and we were ‘Team Storm’! Sadly, we did not win that tournament, but we have stayed together and have been getting better every season and putting in a lot of work to

do so. We do speed drills, learn routes, and practice agile footwork. One of the biggest hurdles to starting football is just getting used to having the ball in my hands. I have had a great time playing flag football, and I will continue to play as long as there is a girls’ league for my age. I encourage any girls out there to try it if they want to, even if they have no experience. All you need is a great Coach and a willingness to learn. Coach Jimmy has a motto we have to hype ourselves up with before games, “Play Hard, Have fun, Don’t Quit.” Flag football truly is a great sport!

Weston: I have played eight seasons with Aim High. Since Coaches are parent volunteers and they keep teams together by map location, I’ve played for several coaches who live right here in WIllowsford: Coach Hatala, Coach Eways, and Coach Spinoso. These have all been great coaches for me; each of them looked for ways to improve our teams, player by player. Although I play in a Co-Ed league, I have only had boys on my team. I can see clearly how much I and all of my teammates and competitors have improved over the years.

The competition only gets harder each year, so it’s important I work hard in the off-season to better my speed and agility. In addition to the regular seasons, Aim High also hosts tournaments in the winter and summer. For the regular seasons, sadly, I have not made it to the Super Bowl. But for the tournament, I did make it to the Super Bowl but walked out with a disappointing loss by one touchdown. Even with losses, I love being on the team, working hard, and learning more about football skills. I am as excited as ever to go play my next season.

The major reason each of us loves playing flag football with Aim High is that it’s a family event for us. We’re on a local field every Saturday for 2 games, sometimes 3 games, if one of us has a double header. We each enjoy supporting the other, my parents enjoy seeing us compete and get better year over year, and often we’re the loudest cheering section for the other sibling’s game!

No Need to Get Hiss-terical!

Discover the truth about venom, backyard visits, and co-existing with snakes.

Let’s Talk Snakes was a program hosted by Willowsford Conservancy and Bill Crisp at Cedar Pond Pavilion in October. Bill Crisp is our local ambassador from K2C Snake Consultants, an organization with the goal of helping reduce the fear of snakes and coexist with local native snakes. This hands-on experience was fun and insightful for everyone who attended! Bill Crisp taught us that snakes are actually afraid of us, so we should not be afraid of them. He taught us how snakes protect themselves from harm, how they live, and shared some lesser-known snake facts:

1. Snakes are not aggressive; they are defensive. They will defend themselves only if they feel threatened.

2. Snakes are not poisonous; they are venomous. Venomous means the snake injects venom when it bites you. Poisonous means you would have to bite the snake!

3. Some non-venomous snakes in Virginia look like Copperheads, but they are not the same. You can recognize a Copperhead snake by the Hershey’s Kiss shape pattern on it.

4. Snake repellent and prevention products sold in stores do not work. If you want to keep your yard snake-free, keep your grass cut short and trim your plants. Snakes like to hide in tall grass and seek shelter in bushes and trees. Keep your garage door closed because snakes like to venture in looking for mice and can get trapped.

5. Do not kill snakes! It is illegal to kill a snake in Virginia unless the snake is threatening you or your property, is a nuisance, or is inside your home or garage.

6. Virginia has only three species of venomous snakes, and only two types in Loudoun County, the Copperhead Snake and Timber Rattlesnake.

Let’s Talk Snakes was a fun and engaging program that helped me better appreciate these scaly reptiles and their role in our environment! Remember, if you see a snake on one of our trails, it is probably more scared of you than you are of it!

Shop & Stroll

A festive night of exclusive shopping, holiday treats, and community connection in charming Middleburg.

Willowsford residents gathered in holiday style once again for Shop & Stroll, Stroll Willowsford’s most beloved seasonal tradition. Hosted in partnership with The Hill School, this festive evening in charming Middleburg delivered everything neighbors have come to love: twinkling holiday spirit, exclusive shopping, and plenty of opportunities to connect and celebrate together.

The night kicked off with a cheerful Happy Hour at The Hill School, where guests enjoyed delicious appetizers and festive beverages generously provided by our hosts. The space buzzed with conversation as friends reunited, new connections were made, and glasses were

raised to the start of the holiday season. For many attendees, the experience began with optional chauffeured transportation from the Lodge and Sycamore House— making the trip to Middleburg stress-free and part of the fun.

From there, everyone set out for the heart of the evening: exclusive holiday shopping at Middleburg’s finest boutiques. Armed with custom shopping bags and curated maps, neighbors visited shops on their own schedules, enjoying special offers created just for Shop & Stroll guests. Sponsor-hosted food and wine stations along the route added extra cheer, encouraging guests to linger, sip, and savor each stop.

The evening wrapped up with a sweet and cozy finale at The Boyd Bed & Breakfast, a beautiful new property not yet open to the public. Guests gathered for bubbly, decadent desserts, and a lively closing reception courtesy of The Hill School. With door prize giveaways from participating shops and event sponsors, the night ended on a high note—full bags, happy smiles, and plenty of holiday excitement to take home.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, and to our generous sponsors and shop partners for helping make this unforgettable night possible. We can’t wait to “Stroll” with you again next year!

“As we prepare to open The Boyd Bed & Breakfast, our mission is to create a premium experience for our guests. That is exactly the experience we had engaging with The Hill School and Stroll Willowsford, preparing for the Shop & Stroll event. Partnering with them was nothing short of amazing! They both have a deep commitment to building community strength and relationships, and they are doing an amazing job! They were eager to offer us words of encouragement and helped put our minds at ease about hosting our very first sneakpeek event at The Boyd.

We cherish their relationships and admire their commitment to serve!”
