NOTE FROM YOUR PUBLISHER
MAY IN FULL BLOOM
With a burst of color and warmth, May invites us to honor the past, cherish the present and welcome what’s ahead.
“There ought to be a hall of fame for mamas, creation’s most unique and precious pearl.” – MERLE HAGGARD, “MAMA’S HUNGRY EYES”
Hello, Willowsford Community Residents, Spring has fully settled in— warm breezes, sun-drenched afternoons, and gardens bursting into color. Welcome to the May edition of Stroll Willowsford, created by and for the incredible residents who make this community feel like home. This month brings one of my favorite celebrations: Mother’s Day. As a mother myself, I cherish this day as a
time to reflect on the joys and challenges of parenthood and to honor the women who shape our lives with wisdom and care. Whether we’re thanking the mothers who raised us, celebrating our own journey, or appreciating the nurturing figures in our lives, it’s a moment to pause and express our love and gratitude. No wonder it sparks more phone calls than any other day— millions of voices reaching out to say, “Thank you, Mom.”

May 2025
May also invites us to pause and remember those who have served our country, especially on Memorial Day. Originally established in the aftermath of the Civil War, this day was set aside as a time to honor those who gave their lives in service. Chosen to coincide with the season of blooming flowers, it’s a reminder that even in loss, there is beauty, renewal and a legacy that lives on. Inside this issue, you’ll find heartwarming stories from neighbors, snapshots of recent gatherings and more. And, of course, we extend our deepest gratitude to the local businesses that support Stroll Willowsford — their partnership keeps our publication thriving, and
we encourage you to support them in return. Much like the gardens in full bloom, this magazine flourishes because of you. Your stories, photos and shared moments are what make each issue special. Thank you for being part of our growing community — we can’t wait to see what the rest of the season brings! Best,

SMALL WORLD MOMENT! In October 2019, I met Mariann Umlor in Belize while celebrating my 50th with a college friend. We were watching the World Series (Nationals vs. Astros) when we struck up a conversation with two friends from Michigan. I mentioned I owned a magazine for Willowsford, and turns out, her daughter Maria lived

there and Kellie was nearby. Fast forward to May 2024, when I met Kellie at a Stroll event—she had just moved to Willowsford! The three of us recently got together at the Holiday Shop & Stroll and snapped a photo to send to their mom. Now, Maria and Kellie are sharing this month’s cover as our spotlight families. What a full-circle moment!

STROLL WILLOWSFORD BOARD UPDATE MAY 2025
The new Willowsford HOA Board is pleased to share that from the recent Board election Frank Blackstone will serve as President, Brian Bobby as Vice President, Seth Johnson as Treasurer, Fred Ferares as Secretary, and Steve Bloom as At-Large. This election saw one of the largest voter turnouts we’ve seen, and we’re hoping many of you will remain engaged throughout the year. We will be soliciting resident input on a number of topics and encourage everyone to get involved and contribute in making our community as great as we can be! The Board wanted to thank Harry Pugh for his four years of service, particularly his experience on our financial matters – it was invaluable and has assisted in placing us on great financial footing, now and for the future. We also wanted to thank Alisha Malik for serving the past two years, and providing her voice and experience, particularly in the Grange and with NOVEC. Alisha has graciously offered – and we’ve accepted – to serve as a Board liaison regarding data center, substation and other resident concerns. The Board has also approved this year’s Design Review Committee (DRC) resident volunteers: Max Harwell as Chair, Scott McIntosh as Vice Chair, Gary Eisenberg, Dallas Hubbard, and Tom Thoma serving. The Covenants Committee is chaired by Tom, with Max, Dallas, Gary and Karyn Moreland also serving – thank you to all! Our Events staff has put together a number of great HOA events, which we hope that you have been enjoying, and continue to enjoy. It’s about to be Summer - time for the opening of the pools! We obviously want everyone to enjoy our resort-style pools but also to follow the rules and the directions of our lifeguards and staff, for the safety of all. We’re continuing to implement our Strategic Plan, and will seek updated input on how to best enhance our extensive trails, meadows, lakes and ponds, and HOA amenities to make this an even better place to live! On the County front, we are actively working with our Board of Supervisor Representative Laura TeKrony on various issues, and with the Parks Board regarding Lightridge Park in the Greens. As always, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your resident Board of Directors at BOD@willowsfordlife.com,or our HOA team members, if you have questions or ideas that you would like to share. An Evening of Wine and Culinary Excellence at Willowsford Winemaker Dinner BY STAFF WRITER AND RESIDENT KIMBERLY SPITZ
M
arch 7th and 8th, Sycamore House hosted a Winemaker Dinner featuring Napa Valley’s Reverie Wine, where over 100 Willowsford residents enjoyed an unforgettable evening of wine and food pairings. The event showcased Reverie’s exceptional, limited-production wines, paired with a thoughtfully curated menu created by Willowsford’s Chef Emily Worth. The evening’s celebration of wine was expertly guided by Reverie’s own winemaker and General Manager, Austin Robertson. Resident and wine enthusiast Brian Vernon, who put together this and other wine dinners, was on hand to introduce Robertson and share his own experience visiting Reverie in Napa. Chef Emily’s culinary prowess was on full display, starting with passed hors d’oeuvres: seared scallop bites with apple celeriac slaw, and truffle honey ricotta crostini. Paired with a crisp Blanc de Blanc, the sole white wine featured, this trio set the tone for the evening’s delicious journey. The first plated course, a shrimp croquette atop roasted tomato coulis, was paired with a 2021 Barbera, while a 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon complemented the soup course: smoked onion and miso soup with a parmesan crisp. Chef Emily’s entrée, a petit filet with chimichurri butter, root vegetable puree, and smoked paprika potatoes, was served alongside a 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Special Reserve. For dessert, guests enjoyed a rich chocolate pot de crème with cinnamon chantilly cream, and a 2021 Cabernet Franc. With every course, Robertson gave as introduction to the next wine, including tasting notes and details of its production. The evening concluded with a bonus pour of 2021 Mountain Cuvée, while guests had the chance to engage with the winemaker, whose knowledge of and passion added to the evening’s charm. Chef Emily’s skill in crafting a menu that complemented Reverie’s wines perfectly, including accommodating dietary restrictions, made the evening a standout event. It was truly an unforgettable night filled with exceptional food, fine wine, and great company. Join the next Winemaker Dinner! WillowsfordLife.com > Lifestyle > Registration Catalog

“Reverie impressed us, and we’re happy to have become new members. The food by Chef Emily was delicious, as usual and we enjoyed everyone at our table as well.” —RESIDENTS SARAH AND JIM LEE
Reverie Wine was founded in 1993 by New Jersey native and former CFO Norm Kiken and his late wife Evelyn. After a decade of partnership with renowned winemaker Grant Long Jr., Reverie relocated to the base of Howell Mountain on a beautiful 26-acre estate. Known for their Bordeaux-style mountain wines and unique grape varietals, Reverie II continues a legacy of crafting excellent wines with a deep respect for single-vineyard production.

NOTABLE NEIGHBOR
Honoring Jennifer Cohen BY RESIDENT AND JUNIOR WRITER WESTON MCLAUGHLIN THIS FEATURE SPONSORED BY THE VIRGINIA INSTITUTE FOR SURGICAL ARTS
THERE ARE MAN Y WONDERFU L T E AC H E R S in
Willowsford who could all qualify for Notable Neighbor, but I had the chance to interview my kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Jennifer Cohen, and I can tell you she’s notable! I met Mrs.Cohen in the fall of 2020 when I started kindergarten virtually at Goshen Post. I did not meet Mrs. Cohen in person until mid-year when she dropped by each virtual student’s house to say hello and bring fun school supplies. She stood in the yard and my family stayed on the porch, but it was fun to finally see her in person. Since then, Mrs. Cohen walks down my street with her kids some evenings, so we still get to see each other.
28
May 2025
I’m now in 4th grade, and I still see Mrs. Cohen every year. Sometimes my family rides bikes to her house to go visit, or we see her out somewhere. She is a very kind and very patient teacher. Can you imagine having to help 20 or more 5-year-olds just starting school learn to start school and use technology through a screen? Mrs. Cohen made it fun for us. I remember taking dance breaks to silly videos, that was the fun part! The Covid year was her hardest because she had to build relationships from afar. If you ask me, I think she did a pretty great job of it! Mrs. Cohen says she became a teacher simply because she loves kids and thinks the Kindergarten age is special. She enjoys her job most when she sees a student have a learning breakthrough. Mrs. Cohen has been teaching since 2019 and has been at the Kinder age range ever since. I asked Mrs. Cohen what advice she had for aspiring teachers, her answer was simple: you have to love kids and have a passion for watching them grow. There are many hardships she faces as a teacher,
including doing more with less. If this is a career anyone reading this wants to enter, just know you really do need to have a passion for it. Mrs. Cohen is our Notable Neighbor this month because she gives her all and leaves a mark of kindness on her students every year. I always find her at school events and in the community, and she’s still really kind to me, four years later. Our teachers deserve the biggest recognition for how hard they work. THANK YOU to one of my favorites, Mrs. Cohen! Do you know somebody who consistently puts others before themselves and supports others in need, whether large or small, but often flies under the radar? To nominate a fellow neighbor for this honor, send an email to billie.rose@ strollmag.com.

PRECIOUS PETS
PAW-SITIVELY TEA-RIFFIC Tiny Maltipoos bring big smiles! BY RESIDENT AND JUNIOR WRITER SCARLETT TAYLOR • THIS FEATURE SPONSORED BY MIGHTY CLEAN CARPET CARE
DOGS AR E CUTE A ND CU DDLY animals
that we love. There are so many types of breeds of dogs that are unique in their own ways! Today, we are focusing on two little puppies that I adore, named Finn and Penny Bermudez! They are so cute, and I wanted to get to know them some more; so I asked residents Ellie, Annabelle, and their parents, Lauren and Mike Bermudez, some questions.
My first question was, what inspired you to get Finn and Penny? They replied, “Our cousin has one of their siblings, and we just couldn’t get over her. She is so sweet and just so cute. We printed out pictures of our cousin’s puppy and taped them up all over the house to try to convince our parents to add a puppy to our family. They eventually said yes and we adopted Penny! A year later, we thought Penny would like to have a playmate at home, so we adopted her brother, Finn!” If you ask me, that is a great way to convince your parents to get a dog! Next, I asked, what breed of dogs are Finn and Penny? “Finn and Penny are Teacup Maltipoos. Penny is 3.5 years old and weighs just 5lbs and Finn just turned 2 and weighs 9lbs.” Teacup Maltipoos are such a cute breed! Share your pet pics with us! Email billie.rose@strollmag.com. 30
May 2025
After that, I asked, who acts as the fun, loving dog, who will play no matter what and why? This is the answer I got: “Finn! Finn is a happy little guy and is always up for playing. He always convinces Penny to play with him and is up for a game of fetch or a walk at any time of the day! He has a lot of energy and is not shy to lay down at anyone’s feet for a belly rub.” Aww! It sounds like Finn is quite the fun dog to play with! So then I got curious, if there is a fun, loving dog, what is the other dog like? And they said, “Penny is a very sweet and snuggly pup. She wants nothing more
than to lay on one of our laps or be carried around the house.” It can be very nice to have a calm dog, too! The next question was, it’s been very cold this winter, and they’re so small! Do they have a favorite snow outfit? They responded “they have a lot of winter sweaters to keep them warm on winter walks, but their favorite sweaters by far have got to be the ones that match our dad’s sweater!” I think dogs look so cute in clothes! Finn and Penny are very adventurous dogs, and I know Finn and Penny love to ride around in the
car. I asked if Finn and Penny could be anywhere in the world, where would they go, and why do you think they would go there? They said “They do love to ride in the car! When we say, “Time for a RIDE!” They run as fast as they can to the car and wait patiently to hop in. We think they would love to take a trip to the beach, they love to run around on the sand!” It seems like a lot of dogs love cars and going outside! Finn and Penny are such fun dogs to be around! They are so cute, and I love them so much! What’s your favorite dog breed?

WHAT DRIVES US?
From Social Media to Studio Photography My journey with Reframe Branding BY RESIDENT MACKENZIE HANSEL • THIS FEATURE SPONSORED BY HILLYARD AUTOMOTIVE
Y
ears ago, I was Stroll Willowsford’s Content & Publication Manager — a role that was such a meaningful chapter in my life. It taught me the power of community and connection — lessons that have stayed with me as I launched Reframe Branding, a social media and marketing consulting business that has also grown into photography. Working with Stroll clients like Bobbio Family Dental and The Virginia Institute for Surgical Arts, who are now social media clients of my own, reminded me how passionate and driven small business owners are, and they gave me the confidence to take that leap to start Reframe Branding. What I didn’t expect was how my love for sports — and life as a mom of three, living in the Greens — would shape this next chapter. A few months into Reframe, I upgraded from my iPhone to my first Sony camera to create higher quality content for clients, and I purchased a studio backdrop for testimonial filming and video shoots. While testing out my new equipment, I took media day photos of my daughter Madison. After I posted them on social media, friends started asking for sports portraits of their kids, and soon my little home studio was filled with kids, families, and a lot of energy.

n Willowsford, two families, connected by more than just proximity, embrace life with an energy that reflects the community around them. The Gupta family has called Willowsford home for seven years and is currently in their “busy season” of life. Varun, a SVP at Lafayette Federal Credit Union, focuses on business development, member engagement, and strategic growth. He’s also passionate about cars and motorsports and is President of Willowsford Wheels, a car enthusiast club in Willowsford. Maria works in marketing at an advanced technology company, thriving on creativity and strategy. Her enthusiasm is contagious—so much that their son, Grayson, has already decided he wants to be a marketer when he grows up just to work with her. Their three children, Kylie, Grayson, and Denver, set the pace of their daily lives. Varun’s daughter, Kylie, 18, recently started college and is enjoying this new chapter of her young adulthood. A passionate reader who loves spending
time with friends, she’s making the most of her studies, and the family couldn’t be prouder. Grayson, 5, is endlessly curious, always eager to learn and try new things, sometimes all at once! He enjoys crafts, karate, riding his bike through the neighborhood, and cruising in his kid-sized ATV. Meanwhile, three-year-old Denver is the family’s fearless adventurer, happiest when catching bugs with his big brother, riding his balance bike, or playing soccer. As a family, they love spending time outdoors in Willowsford. Whether biking, playing at the parks, or exploring the conservancy behind their home, they feel lucky to be part of such a beautiful and welcoming community.
Just down the road, the Pereira family embraces their own adventures in Willowsford. Kellie and Nitin, Maria’s twin sister and brother-in-law, have called the community home since March 2021. Drawn by the chance to be closer to family and the vibrant neighborhood, they moved from Michigan, though their connection to Willowsford began long before. Both Kellie and Maria worked at the ad agency that helped promote the community, with Kellie handling marketing campaigns for years before she considered living there. “I thought it was too far from D.C.,” she laughs. “Now, we couldn’t imagine being anywhere else.”

EACH MOMENT IS A REMINDER T H AT, N O M AT T E R T H E SEASON OF LIFE, THERE’S A LWAY S ROOM FOR ADVENTURE, FA M I LY, AND A LOT OF LAUGHTER. Since their move, their children, 12-year-old Ariana (Ari) and 10-yearold Caden, have thrived in their new home. Both share a love for soccer and enjoy being creative in the kitchen, whether cooking or baking. Ari has recently taken a strong interest in volleyball and loves spending time with friends. “She’s a true summer enthusiast, drawn to anything beach-related, and her favorite color is bright, cheerful yellow”, Kellie says.

Caden can often be found playing Fortnite, chatting with his friends, or tackling brain teasers with impressive skill. He’s also a talented guitar player and can play classic rock or alternative rock on his electric guitar. As a family, the four enjoy watching Agatha Christie mysteries and testing their problem-solving skills with escape rooms—”It’s become a favorite way to spend quality time together,” Kellie shares. In his free time, Nitin plays soccer for the Willowsford team, and both he and Kellie stay involved by coaching their kids’ teams. Every summer, the Pereira family make their way back to Michigan to visit Maria and Kellie’s families in Grand Rapids, keeping their deep-rooted connections alive. Whether it’s coaching soccer, exploring nature, or just sharing a meal, it’s the connection between these two families and their community that makes life in Willowsford so special. Each moment is a reminder that, no matter the season of life, there’s always room for adventure, family, and a lot of laughter. Would you like your family to be a Stroll Willowsford feature family? A FT E R MOVIN G AROU ND THE COU NTRY
for the first 15 years of my marriage, I truly appreciate the sense of home I’ve found in Willowsford. Like many of you, I cherish the scenic trails that invite us outdoors, the delicious farm-to-table meals, and the incredible community that makes this more than just a neighborhood; it’s a special place to live and raise our boys. Recently, I asked fellow residents about the health and wellness questions on their minds and received thoughtful responses, revealing a few common themes. Despite having easy access to healthy living resources, many of us can still benefit from understanding basic wellness principles. Further, as many of us enter our 40’s, we face aging bodies, health concerns, and longevity questions that we may not have considered before. With so much information available, it can be overwhelming to decide what changes to make in our personal lives. ARE YOU CURIOUS ABOUT YOU?
When you think about health, what healthy means, and what it takes to be healthy, does it often feel either overly complex or too simplified to make a lasting impact? Our well-being generally revolves around what we eat, how much we move, and the stress we experience. Notwithstanding injuries or illnesses, these three components play a significant role in how we feel. Within each of these three themes lie many questions such as how much protein we should eat, the balance between how much cardio versus strength we should perform, and how to effectively manage stress when it feels like an inevitable part of our daily lives.

We live in an era of information overload. Studies and statistics are often skewed to support opposing viewpoints, making it difficult to discern the best choice, and the sheer abundance of information adds stress to our attempts at making good decisions. When faced with daily choices, such as what’s for dinner, we may end up just wanting to grab whatever sounds good regardless of whether it’s a power food or fast food.
As a health and life coach, most clients come to me with a desired change or goal: breaking a bad habit, forming a good habit, or achieving a short-term objective like losing weight for a vacation or special event. However, true transformation happens when we break down these goals into three essential components: • Defining what is truly desired. • Identifying actionable steps. • Establishing accountability.
Do you want to meet your goal only to find yourself restarting the same journey six months or a year later, or do you seek lasting change that allows you to move forward and focus on the next improvement for a healthier, more fulfilling life? For most of us, there is usually one area in our daily life where we can immediately make a change to move closer to a healthier version of ourselves. If you are inspired to improve your wellbeing - whether because you’ve entered your 40s and are thinking about longevity, you are retired and want mobility and energy to keep up with your grandkids or participate in hobbies, or you are young and building habits for a lifetime - the following five basic fundamentals serve as a solid foundation: • Sleep (7-9 hours each night). • Eat for nutrition (whole foods). • Hydrate (preferably with water). • Move (preferably outdoors for 20 minutes a few times a week); • Manage stress (e.g., through breathwork, meditation, yoga, or relationships). I’m sure you have heard about some or all of these elements before, but don’t let the basicness of them fool you – if they were always easy, we would all be doing them! So, what is the missing component?
AN OVERARCHING MINDSET: GET CURIOUS ABOUT YOU!!
Yes, there is an overwhelming amount of information available, and it can be so overwhelming that either you don’t know where to start or you don’t start at all. Human bodies are both fundamentally similar and incredibly unique. What works for the amazing influencer on Instagram may or may not work for you. The way cardio benefits me might differ from how it affects you. However, all human bodies function better when these five basic fundamentals are consistently maintained. Once these foundations are in place, we can finesse and fine tune our knowledge and habits, but today, get curious about yourself! Are you feeling low on energy, constantly stressed, or stuck in a workout plateau? Have you gained weight when that was never an issue before? If you are looking for the next step in your current health journey, start with the basics. Be honest with yourself, and play a game of inquiry without judgment. How do you feel after eating a grilled chicken breast versus a breaded chicken sandwich? If you move your bedtime up by 30 minutes, does the next day feel any different? Being mindful of the basics allows us to pinpoint areas for adjustment or improvement. Unhealthy behaviors are not simply a matter of not trying hard
enough, a lack of self-control, or low motivation. While the stories we tell ourselves definitely impact our decisions, we also need to structure our lives (e.g., be purposeful about what we eat, drive our sleep patterns, be conscious of how and when we move) in a way that isn’t about some amazing amount of willpower but an intentionally designed environment and set of habits where we don’t have to rely so much on willpower. We have our routines, our busy lives, the demand of feeding ourselves and/or families every day…three times, work, sports practices, etc. You create your life with each decision you make. Be present for those choices. Every decision you make is a step toward the person you are becoming. The first step? Get curious! Being intrepid doesn’t always mean skydiving or traveling to the ends of the earth. Often, it means being honest with yourself – so be intrepid! Sisters that Sell
How to price my home in this volatile market? Deborah: The market is hot right now. Homes are selling—but not all of them. Michelle: Right! Some homes are flying off the market, while others just… sit. And sellers always ask us, why? Deborah: The truth is, your home’s price is either selling your house—or it’s selling your neighbor’s. Michelle: And that’s why pricing strategy is everything. When we list a home, we go beyond just looking at comps—we dig in. Deborah: We call the agents who already have listings under contract to get the realstory. Michelle: We find out: What price is it under contract for? Above asking? Below asking? How many offers did they get? How many showings did it take to sell? Deborah: That tells us where buyers are actually willing to go, so we can position your home for the strongest results. Michelle: Because it’s not just about picking a list price—it’s about strategically setting yourself up to sell for top dollar. Deborah: If you don’t position it right, you risk helping your neighbor sell their home instead. Michelle: And we’re not here for that. We’re here to make sure you win. Deborah: So, if you want to sell for top dollar and on your terms, give us a call.

A Cork & Keg Wine Tour
BY RESIDENT KRISTY PELLERITO
FR OM THE MOME N T Cork and Keg picked us up, we knew we
were in for something special. We kicked off the adventure in a comfy Mercedes Benz van, stocked with welcome goodies and a group toast to set the tone. With our fantastic guide, Julissa Kendall, leading the way, the day was filled with laughter, great conversation, and plenty of time to just relax and enjoy. It was the perfect little escape from the rush of early 2025.

Cork and Keg planned the day just for us, starting with Bluemont Station, where we got a behind-the-scenes look at the vineyard’s history—ghost stories included! We sampled their impressive lineup of wines, homemade seltzers, sangria, and beer while digging into an amazing lunch. Their menu had something for everyone, from fresh salads to wood-fired pizzas and their famous smash burgers. Between the delicious food, great drinks, and fun atmosphere, we could have stayed all day. Next, we made our way to Walsh Family Wine in Purcellville, where we settled into their cozy, welcoming tasting room, tucked

in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Our host walked us through a tasting of their incredible wines, each one better than the last. It was the kind of place where you just want to linger, sipping and chatting, soaking in the moment. Cork and Keg thought of every detail, making the whole day easy, fun, and unforgettable. For my fellow Willowsford neighbors, if you are looking for a well-planned, stress-free wine adventure, they’re the way to go!

NVblu
A Trusted Name in Pool Design and Construction
WRITTEN BY STROLL WILLOWSFORD STAFF WRITER LIA HOBEL
W
hen it comes to pool design and construction, NVblu has been a trusted name in the DC Metro Area since 1981. With a strong foundation in commercial construction, NVblu has designed and built numerous community pools and recreational facilities, particularly in Loudoun County. “NVblu has designed and built the vast majority of its community pools,” says NVblu President, Drew Crowder. “People trust the construction of their homes with the same people that trust us with their pools; that relationship is invaluable.” Each new client brings a unique experience when it comes to designing and building a custom pool. Homeowners typically start by reaching out for a design consultation, where one of NVblu’s specialists guides them through the design and planning process. Once a contract agreement is reached, NVblu’s teams of specialists take the client from pool excavation all the way to the first cannonball off the diving board. The “in-between” stages are what truly set NVblu apart. While a simple plunge pool is relatively straightforward, more complex projects like a lazy river that flows under the tennis pavilion archway, past the outdoor kitchen, and to the swim-up bar can take months to complete. “Projects can take months, but the more elements that are involved, they can take up to a year or more to finish. The good news is: no matter the timeline, they’re always worth the wait,” Drew explains. Send us a testimonial about any of our Stroll Willowsford sponsors to billie.rose@n2co.com, or fill out the form here: bit.ly/StrollWFTestimonial. You will be entered to win a $100 Visa gift card that month.

“We designed and built all of the community pools in Willowsford, and we’ve built incredible projects throughout the Willowsford neighborhoods every year since it was built.”
The pool industry has always been at the forefront of sustainability concerns. Careful attention is paid to hydraulics for efficiency in plumbing. NVblu always utilizes pumps and heaters that have been approved by the Department of Energy for their efficiency and energy ratings. From an environmental perspective, NVblu often also utilizes certified land disturbers when the projects require use of a smaller construction footprint to minimize the affected areas during construction. No project is out of reach, as NVblu has experience with a number of unique projects. “Two-tiered pools (a pool that overflows into another pool) often provide unique hydraulic challenges. We’ve done some below-ground pools that were designed through hidden passages, and construction access for those is always tricky. Our waterfall projects are always unique and exciting, some stretching hundreds of feet. Sometimes small projects are very challenging, you have to get very creative when your footprint is tiny and you’re trying to incorporate a lot of outdoor living elements.” Drew says NVblu often paves the way for new trends. “Being in business as a family-owned company for over 40 years we’ve seen it all, and we’ve done it all,” he explains. “Often we’re only limited by climate (or the laws of physics). The same thing that someone sees on an Instagram video of a pool in California
might not work in a climate that gets four seasons, but other than that, we push the boundaries of design if the budget for the project allows for it.” Drew says that innovation often comes with a price tag, but the company is happy to accommodate. “We can’t, however, make water flow uphill. But that’s not for lack of trying,” he jokes. Before a homeowner considers a new pool or renovation, Drew recommends being upfront about your budget. “Figure out your budget and be honest with your designer about it. You’ll save time and frustration if we can design up to your budget,” he shares. “Everyone has a top end that they’re not willing to go over, we can design a ten-million-dollar backyard if you want. But if your budget is a million, half a million, or a couple hundred grand, that’s the first step toward the best use of everyone’s time.” When you work with NVblu, it’s about working as a “team” to get the best product at the customer’s set budget. Drew says the company is really excited about their Stroll relationship. “We designed and built all of the community pools in Willowsford, and we’ve built incredible projects throughout the Willowsford neighborhoods every year since it was built.” NVblu’s mission is to help clients realize their dreams and create the best possible backyard environment. BY RESIDENT AND JUNIOR WRITER HENRY VOOYS THIS FEATURE SPONSORED BY HARRIFORD EXTERIOR RESTORATION
This month I had the opportunity to interview Interior Designer Kristen Bridger. Tell me a little about yourself and your business.
Hi! I am Kristen Bridger, the founder of Kristen Bridger Interiors. I am a Willowsford resident in the Greens, and mom to three busy kids. I believe that every space tells a story and my mission is to transform your vision into reality. What made you want to work in interior design?
I’ve always had a passion for designing spaces, and for years, I’ve been the go-to person for friends and family when they need design advice. Being able to express my creativity through design is incredibly fulfilling. Many people feel stuck in their spaces, unable to make them work for their needs. I love helping them transform those spaces and empowering them to truly live comfortably and happily in their own home.
We would love to feature your living space, either indoor or outdoor! Email billie.rose@strollmag.com!
What type of challenges do you encounter while designing?
As an interior designer, one of the most exciting challenges is balancing creativity with functionality. It’s a rewarding process to understand clients’ visions while also considering practical aspects of the space, like lighting, furniture placement, and flow. Most of my clients have children or pets and I want the space to look beautiful but also be functional for their needs. Each project presents its own unique problems, like maximizing small spaces or extra large spaces and blending various styles. What is your favorite part of interior design?
The most rewarding part is seeing the joy and satisfaction on my clients’ faces when the project is complete. Each project gets better and better!
Tell me more about your plans for the future with your business..
In the coming years, I hope to continue to develop a loyal client base offer more services such as virtual design. I work closely with a preferred contractor, Dave Poe, with CamCon Contracting and we are continuing to take on larger projects. Where can people connect with you? Follow me on Instagram @kristenbridger_interiors where I

MAKING A DIFFERENCE
Fleurishing Futures
How one chef serves up success and support
BY RESIDENT AND JUNIOR WRITER HANNA STOLLE • THIS FEATURE SPONSORED BY LUX DENTAL CENTER
W E LCOME BACK TO the Making a
Difference portion of the Stroll magazine, where we recognize those who give back to our community. Natalie Ramos is the owner of a small business called Fleur de Cuisine. Ms. Ramos was a victim of domestic violence and was married for 24 years. She never wanted anyone to go through what she did, and Ramos vowed always to give back to the community that saved her. Natalie Ramos previously owned a donut shop, which helped her learn the trade. When Ms. Ramos’s landlord
allegedly had a money scandal with employee pay, Ramos paid every single worker back as soon as she could. This is a very good example of how she helped others at her own expense. Ms. Ramos was still being financially assisted by Loudon County at this point but was determined to change for her daughter. Her official culinary career began during Covid, when she innovated party boxes
complete with decor and food, which gained traction when Asurion bought the first ones for a gala. This was a major source of income as they ordered 250 boxes for $125 dollars each! Ramos named her business after her maiden last name Fleur, to remind her of where she came from. The name also showcased her love of food and blossoming success as a business.

Our team at Lux Dental Center takes great pride in our work, and we especially value our relationships with our patients. We never want our patients to feel like a number, and always want them to feel like they are heard and empowered to make well-informed dental decisions. As a Willowsford resident-owned business, Dr. Lynn Alexander and Dr. Jason Kiangsoontra feel privileged and grateful to be the dentists of many Willowsford families. We hope to change the way you feel about dentistry, one appointment at a time!
Fleur de Cuisine supports numerous non-profits including Loudoun Cares, Backpack Buddies, Spark, and Echo. In addition to this, they send meals every year on holidays to all first responders and hospitals near our neighborhood. One of Natalie Ramos’s most meaningful contributions was to Beyer family Celebration of Life, honoring beloved members of a Willowsford family. Fleur de Cuisine donated all the catering and decorations, and helped set up for the day. Most companies asked for recognition of some sort, but
not Ramos. She simply did it because “Even in the worst circumstances, I’m far from crumbling. I’ve lived crumbling and know how it feels. I want to support the community and people who helped me get back from broken.” Ms. Ramos has remarried and now lives comfortably. One thing in our interview that stuck with me was when Ms. Ramos said, “Every time you feel like you’re drowning, we forget that we can swim.” I’m in awe that Fleur de Cuisine went from a small catering company in
2018 to the huge operation it is today. Fleur de Cuisine recently opened a new restaurant, Marie De La Fleur, at 19375 Magnolia Grove Square in Leesburg. It’s located in the gated community of Lansdowne Woods, so don’t miss it! Here, you can experience her amazing cooking and original dishes. Go to FleurdeCuisine.com to learn more about this amazing story, food, and upcoming events. And think about how you can help give back to our community!’

STROLL JUNIOR WRITERS
MARCHING INTO THE OUTER LIMITS Junior Writers explore a gaming lounge! BY RESIDENT AND JUNIOR WRITER ANNAKAY JORDAN
F
or our Stroll Junior Writer meeting in March, we visited The Outer Limits, a gaming lounge in Ashburn. We met in the party room, which had a super cool mural on the wall. The mural was painted by a professional spray painter, who only used a piece of cardboard and spray paint - painting it in just one day! The owner of The Outer Limits, Andre Williams, then came and told us the basic rules of the lounge, but I think the most important part of his talk was how he came up with the idea of The Outer Limits. His daughter had a difficult time talking to people and a hard time making new friends because she didn’t have the courage to open up to new people. Mr. Williams thought that opening The Outer Limits would help people not only play games with each other, but talk with them and make new friends too! We also learned there is a real boxing ring in The Outer Limits, and it was all Mr. Williams’ idea! He grew up playing all sorts of games, enjoying the 1v1 fighting games and sports. When he opened The Outer Limits, he thought that it was only right to have a real boxing ring in his gaming lounge! But even cooler than that is The Outer Limits holds weekly matches, in Smash Brothers Ultimate, Street Fighter 6, and finally, Tekken 8 in the ring. Every Friday The Outer Limits hosts a Kids’ Happy Hour from 5-10 pm, offering some time for their parents to go on a date (One Loudoun is right down the street!), or just enjoy a parents’ night out. The Kids’ Happy Hour includes snacks, three hours of playtime, and a movie! The Outer Limits has gaming platforms for everyone. The five they currently have are:
• 15 XBox Series Xs • 12 PS5s • 8 Nintendo Switches • 10 Gaming PCs • 2 VR Headsets The three most popular games at The Outer Limits are Fortnite, Among Us, and Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. Towards the end of the meeting, we had a chance to play all of the fun games at The Outer Limits! I think everyone had a great experience at The Outer Limits, and a lot of us are planning to come back! If you enjoy playing video games, The Outer Limits Gaming Lounge is just for you!

daily fare on-site, take home chef-prepared meals ready for baking or heating, or join them for an expertly crafted cocktail or a select glass of fine wine. Located in the heart of downtown Aldie, The Black Market is a perfect place for an elevated night out! To find out more, I interviewed a resident here in Willowsford, Jennie Rhodes, about her experience at The Black Market! Why did you decide to dine at The Black Market?
We heard the new restaurant had recently opened and were excited to give it a try! Two other families joined us for a fun evening out. What was your dining experience like?
We had a great time! Our group of 13 sat at one large table in the middle of the restaurant. You order via QR code connected to Toast. The service and food were both excellent! Would you go back?
Yes, definitely! We’re happy to support a good, local restaurant. What were the food options like?
The Black Market offers many pasta and steak options. Our group particularly enjoyed the Pear Ravioli and Truffle Fries. They recently added a number of Kids Menu options which were a hit with our younger crowd as well. Our drinks were delicious and the bartender kindly indulged our kids’ requests for “fancy” lemonades. We especially loved the pickled little beak peppers on the Charcuterie and Cheese plate. We’re looking forward to going back soon! For more information about The Black Market, visit theblackmarketvirginia.com

Lux Dental Center offers calming amenities like essential oils, blankets, laughing gas, and a spa-like setting to ease anxiety. “If a patient tells us they have dental anxiety or previous bad dental experiences, we let them take the lead and do as little or as much as they want at appointments. For our most fearful patients, sometimes our first appointment is just spent getting to know each other, and discussing their dental issues and concerns.” Lynn emphasizes that successful dentistry ultimately comes down to trust and confidence in the relationship with your dental care team. “We’ve been very fortunate to have earned the trust of our most fearful and anxious patients,” she states. One of the key aspects of Lux Dental Center’s approach is personalized care around the clock. Lynn recalls a moment when she went above and beyond for a pediatric patient who had a dental emergency on the playground after hours. “Since I was in the area, I stopped by the park with my kids in tow to assess the patient’s tooth in person in the playground parking lot,” she shares. This dedication to patient care is a testament to Lux Dental Center’s commitment to treating and advising all patients as they would their own family.

“We do not take this trust lightly and pay it back by treating and advising all of our patients as we would our own family. We love that we can care for our literal neighbors and think it’s extra special that many of our dearest Willowsford friends started off as patients years ago.”
Families will love the family-focused approach to dental care with Lux Dental Center. Half of the dental team is comprised of mothers, who use creative kid tricks to build trust with young patients.
The dental practice also incorporates advanced technology to enhance patient engagement and comfort. Lynn, a former assistant professor at the University of California, San Francisco School of Dentistry, has made education a core part of the practice’s mission. “When our patients become educated about their oral health, we notice that they’ll point out shadows on X-rays at subsequent appointments and ask questions based on what we’ve discussed in the past,” she explains. The practice uses handheld digital x-ray machines and intraoral scanners to provide quicker and more comfortable procedures. “For procedures like crowns, bridges, and night guards, we use intraoral scanners instead of old-fashioned goopy impression material, which is much quicker and more comfortable for patients with sensitive gag reflexes,” she further explains. Families will love the family-focused approach to dental care with Lux Dental Center. Half of the dental team is comprised of mothers, who use creative kid tricks to build trust with young patients. “Sometimes at our first appointment, all we do is introduce them to our dental instruments, play with bubbles, and do pretend dental cleanings on stuffed animals.” The practice also accommodates parents by allowing privacy for breastfeeding during dental treatment and wheeling babies up and down the hallway while moms get their dental cleaning. Lux Dental Center’s advanced training in prosthodontics also sets them apart from other dental practices. This training allows them to handle complex cases with confidence. Both Lynn and Jason are prosthodontists with three additional years of residency training in complex and rehabilitative dental cases. This expertise ensures that even the most challenging dental cases are managed with skill and precision.
Looking ahead, Lux Dental Center has exciting plans. “As a young start-up dental practice, we have been incredibly fortunate and blessed to have experienced so much growth in the six years that we’ve been open. Perhaps in five or ten years, we will expand our facility to accommodate the growth and demand we’ve seen.” The Willowsford community is a cornerstone of their success. “We feel incredibly fortunate to have so many Willowsford neighbors who have entrusted us with their dental care over the years,” says Lynn, who also calls Willowsford home. “We do not take this trust lightly and pay it back by treating and advising all of our patients as we would our own family. We love that we can care for our literal neighbors and think it’s extra special that many of our dearest Willowsford friends started off as patients years ago,” says Lynn fondly. TRAVEL DIARIES
FROM BALI BLISS TO SINGAPORE SPARKLE
A journey of sun, sand, and city lights! BY RESIDENT AND JUNIOR WRITER KIAAN SARAIYA
IM AGINE A PAR ADISE WHERE the ocean water is a turquoise hue
and the salty waves crash onto the warm golden sand. Sounds like a dream, right? What if I were to tell you that there was a place that was better than this? Bali, Indonesia is a beautiful city on the coast of the Indian Ocean. Whether you want to explore the temples in the city or just relax at the many gorgeous beaches, Bali has it all. Over winter break, me and my family spent a week in Bali, and we were able to explore some of the best tourist spots in the city. One of our first experiences was visiting one of the many volcanoes in Bali. We were able to find many restaurants that had a fantastic view of the volcano, making for a perfect lunch. After, we went to the famous Bali Swing, a huge wooden swing that overlooks a gorgeous view of the city. On the same day, we also went to a coffee farm, where they make fresh coffee that visitors can taste. They even had a special Luwak coffee that was made out of civet feces! Some of our favorites were chocolate coffee, coconut coffee, mangosteen tea, and Luwak coffee. 72

Our next stop was the beach, where we participated in countless water activities. First, we went surfing at Batu Bolong Beach. Afterward, we were able to go snorkeling at a beautiful white sand beach, where the water was practically clear. We saw a variety of unique fish of all colors, and we were even able to visit multiple snorkeling locations. On our final day, we went on a Banana Boat at Nusa Dua, a famous white sand beach in Bali. Our Bali trip was overall an amazing experience, but if you do decide to go, be aware of the traffic during peak tourist season (December and January). Also, there are many hotels and villas you can stay at, and they may even have a private pool! After a week in Bali, we flew to Singapore, where we had an equally fun experience. The city may be small, but there is so much to do! On our first day, we explored the area and saw the Merlion, an iconic symbol of the city. We also visited the Marina Bay Sands Mall, which had every designer shop you could imagine! On our next day, we went to Gardens by the Bay, a humongous indoor garden with plants from around the world. It had a cloud walk, an indoor waterfall, and thousands upon thousands of plants. If you decide to go to the Gardens, make sure to plan a day and a night trip, because there is a nice light show after sunset. We also went on a night safari, where we were able to encounter many local animals in a close-up view. There were lions, hyenas, sloths, elephants, and so many more! On our final day, we went to the Marina Bay Sands, an icon of Singapore. There, we enjoyed a nice lunch at one of the many restaurants on their 55 floors. We were able to get the best view in Singapore, and the building is also a hotel, so guests can enjoy a pool and bar. Overall, the trip was amazing, and I would definitely recommend our itinerary!

KID 2 KID
DRAWING IN DIMENSIONS A 3D Pen adventure! | BY RESIDENT AND JUNIOR WRITER ZIYAD RAFI
3D pens are manual versions of 3D printers. It works with a thin plastic roll of filament loaded in the back, then pressed through the pen at 207 degrees. When the melted plastic comes out, it dries quickly so you can make many shapes. I started by watching videos of people making amazing things, so I asked my mom and dad if I could buy one. I waited and waited, and then my dad surprised me one day. He gave me a box, and it was a… 3D pen! I started practicing with it, and I got better with each use. The first thing I built was a person holding a shield and sword. It was fun. I got 74

hooked on creating more objects. I started during the summer break before third grade. Some days I would spend up to 4 hours working with it! Eventually, in third grade, I started getting orders from people, so I started making what they wanted. As of today, I’ve created 50 objects ranging from a small halo sword to a 6” cyber gorilla and a battery-operated lantern! Eventually, I want to combine circuits with my 3D pen and build a house with working lights. If you haven’t used 3D pens yet, I recommend trying them out! It’s a great hobby to begin!

EDUCATION
Finding The Right School Fit
Hill School Maypole Tradition
A journey to private education BY RESIDENT AUDRA WEISBERG
Willowsford mom Audra Weisberg shares her journey in finding the right educational fit for her children, highlighting the value of private schools like The Hill School and Foxcroft. She’s joined by friend Nan Knisley, a Middleburg native, and Stroll Willowsford sponsor through Golden Rule Builders. Q: How did you find the right school for your children? Audra: An education is the one thing you can give your
child that will last a lifetime. When we moved to this area 20 years ago, we aimed to find the best schools that would offer excellent learning opportunities along with cocurricular activities in a safe and inclusive environment. It was important to find institutions that focused on shaping the whole child, in addition to the educational aspect.

Michaela and Lulu
Nan: Finding the right school fit based on convenience, size,
location, and educational philosophy was important. In our area, we are fortunate to have some of the best public schools in the country, as well as smaller independent and faith-based schools. When it comes to independent schools, finding the ideal culture is unique to each family, but a school that fits a broad base of families builds the most successful school community. Q: What factors played a role in your final school decision? Audra: Both Hill and Foxcroft concentrated on guiding and
shaping students, beyond merely emphasizing the educational aspect. While the primary goal of attending any educational institution is, of course, learning, I wanted to ensure my children had opportunities to engage in a variety of experiences and discover their interests. By prioritizing co-curricular activities alongside classroom learning, I believed my children would be better equipped to grow and determine what they want to focus on and learn in the next stages of their lives. 76

Nan: We were living in Old Town, Alexandria, and sending
our kids to preschool in Georgetown, which was special, but the commute wasn’t sustainable for elementary school. After broadening our search, neighbors who had previously lived in Middleburg recommended The Hill School. The stunning campus offers endless learning opportunities and serves as a community resource. The nurturing teachers, welcoming environment, and focus on developing the whole child made it the perfect balance for academic success and personal growth.
Q: How have your children’s school experience shaped their academic and personal growth? Audra: I could not be happier with my decision to send Michaela to
Hill and Foxcroft. While all three girls have their own personalities and are very different people, I believe they have developed their independence and the ability to advocate for their interests and needs. They have cultivated a love of learning and are pursuing their own paths in life. As I mentioned earlier, education is the one thing we can provide our children that will benefit them for their entire lives. I believe that sending all three girls to Hill and Michaela to Foxcroft has given them this opportunity. Nan: Our son, Mac, and daughter, Lulu, thrived and were wellprepared for success in high school, attending both public (Independence High School) and independent high schools. One key element of their success has been their ability to have thoughtful conversations and advocate for themselves with peers, teammates, teachers, and coaches—skills that were encouraged and honed at The Hill School and that are also emphasized at Foxcroft. Additionally, they are successful in working in groups and as leaders because of the confidence they developed. Q: Audra, how did you make the decision for your daughter to attend Foxcroft as a freshman, and one year in, what would you share about your daughter’s experience at the school? Audra: Coming from Hill, Foxcroft is a popular choice for high
school education, as Hill ends at 8th grade. Michaela, our youngest daughter, was not interested in boarding school but loved that Foxcroft allows day students to stay over a few nights each week as needed. At the same time, Foxcroft emphasizes guiding the whole student- not just academically but also personally. As Michaela finishes her second year at Foxcroft, I am very pleased with her choice to attend. She is excelling in school, serving as the sophomore class president, and playing field hockey, basketball, and lacrosse! Lastly, she has wonderful friends, many from Hill School across multiple grades, who have lovingly mentored and supported her. She loves the Foxcroft community and the friends she has made from all over the world.

Q: Nan, how did you make the decision for your daughter to attend Foxcroft as a senior and what was the unexpected benefits of your choice:
Due to a health issue in our family, Lulu made the tough decision to come home for her senior year versus staying at boarding school. Lulu had developed her confidence as a student and leader through school and club athletics, but transitioning to Foxcroft for her senior year was a bit scary for us all. The way the Foxcroft faculty, students, and coaches embraced her have made it truly special. They’ve been invested in both her academic and personal success. An unexpected benefit has been the special friendships and connections Lulu has made, including with younger students like Michaela Weisberg, who also attended Hill. As parents, we’ve also enjoyed re-connecting with families like the Weisburgs, who we initially met at Hill, and cheering on our girls during field hockey in the fall and now lacrosse. The bond they’ve formed is priceless, and Michaela even celebrated Lulu on field hockey senior day. Q: What do you see as the value of investing in private education? Audra: Growing up, education was a key focus for my family.
One principle my mother emphasized was the necessity of establishing a solid educational foundation, which can be further developed as one progresses. I believe that private education provides the personalized attention and experiences vital for my children’s growth. The emphasis on comprehensive learning beyond the classroom has significantly shaped my children into the confident individuals they are today. Nan: Growing up in a family of educators, I’ve always valued the importance of an educational experience that instills a love of learning. What fuels this most successfully is a joint passion and partnership between the student, family, and school. Schools like The Hill School and Foxcroft foster meaningful relationships not only within their school communities but also in the neighboring communities where their students come from, including Willowsford. While we have incredible public schools in our area, the investment in a private school education can offer a unique environment where students gain confidence, leadership skills, and lasting connections that shape their futures.
