Neighbor to Neighbor

The best recommendations are still the simplest — one neighbor to another. Each month, we feature a selection of testimonials submitted by Willowsford residents about the Stroll Preferred Partners they trust.

Want to share one?

http://bit.ly/StrolIWFTestimonial

“I first worked with them when they replaced the roof on my previous home, and the experience was so smooth that they immediately earned my trust. So when hail came through Willowsford, and we needed another roof, I didn’t hesitate to call them again. Just as before, they handled everything with professionalism and made the process easy. It’s rare to find a company you feel confident calling back a second time.”

FOR DRY HOME ROOFING, MICHAEL KINCAID

“Between running three companies and taking care of my family, this is one thing I can finally take off my plate. We chose you because we see how you show up for the community and support other local businesses.”

FOR A CLEAR PATH

Their insight and firsthand knowledge have made the whole planning process simple and stressfree. We really appreciate their thoughtful recommendations and would happily work with them again!”

“My husband and I have both used Rehab 2 Perform, and we’ve had such a great experience. They focus on the root cause, not just the symptoms, and really take the time to get it right. It’s easy to recommend them to anyone looking for thoughtful, effective care.”

You’re Strolling, but are you

NOTE FROM YOUR PUBLISHER

Slowing Down, Just a Little

A
“Enjoy the little things in life, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.”
ROBERT BRAULT

Hello, Willowsford Community Residents,

June has a way of shifting everything, even if just a little. The school year wraps up, routines begin to loosen, and the pace of everyday life starts to feel different. Even for those still working full schedules, there is something about this time of year that feels lighter. Evenings stretch longer. Dinner moves outside. Plans still fill the calendar, but in a way that feels more relaxed. Vacations are on the horizon, kids are home, and the structure of the past few months gives way to something more flexible.

might otherwise pass by unnoticed.

With Father’s Day this month, it is also a time to recognize the men who play such an important role in our lives. Whether fathers, grandfathers, or those who show up in that role in their own way, their steady presence, guidance, and support are part of what shapes both our families and our community.

Here in Willowsford, you can feel that shift. Neighbors are outside more often. Kids play later into the evening. There is a sense that people are taking a moment to enjoy where they are. These are the days that may feel simple while they are happening, but often become the ones we remember most.

As you flip through this issue of Stroll Willowsford, you will find neighbors and local businesses who are part of these everyday moments. Our Preferred Providers, many of whom are your own neighbors, help make this publication possible each month. As you settle into this season and find a different rhythm, I hope you will think of them and continue sharing your experiences. That word of mouth is what keeps our community strong. Here’s to a season that feels a little slower, a little lighter, and full of moments worth holding onto.

Trash & Recycling Schedule

Tues & Fri – Trash Fri – Recycling • Thurs – Yard Waste

As we step into June, the energy across Willowsford is unmistakable. This season represents the best of our community—a time when our trails, pools, and shared spaces become the backdrop for the connections that define us. As your Board of Directors, we are committed to ensuring these amenities remain in peak condition.

Enhancing Our Amenities

We are pleased to welcome you back to refreshed pools for the 2026 season. Over the spring, at the Sycamore Pool, we’re installing new sod, and at the Lodge Pool, we completed targeted resurfacing and repairs in essential areas, specifically focusing on the zero-entry section and the tiling in various locations. We are repainting both pool house interiors (with non-skid floor surface), power washing, doing mechanical repairs, and adding landscaping enhancements for aesthetic appeal and at the splash park. These precise improvements were prioritized to address wear and tear, ensuring our aquatic facilities remains safe, functional, and beautiful for all residents.

Strategic Stewardship & Town Hall

Beyond immediate repairs, the Board is focused on longterm infrastructure. We are excited to break ground on a new storage unit at The Lodge to better organize community assets. We will present full details on this project and other potential capital improvements at a Community Town Hall. While the date is being finalized, we look forward to sharing these plans and hearing your feedback.

Summer Traditions & Lifestyle

Our summer lineup is designed to bring neighbors together. Please join us for the Father’s Day Seafood Boil on June 21st at The Lodge, followed by the Family Picnic & Fireworks on Friday, June 26th. Also, mark your calendars for the Kids Concert on July 18th and the Dive-In Movie on July 24th.

Engage with Us

Your perspective is vital. We encourage you to stay informed by attending Board meetings or the upcoming Town Hall. We wish you a safe and joyful start to the summer. Whether poolside or on the trails, we hope your June is full of discovery.

Warm regards,

The Willowsford HOA Board of Directors

FROM RESIDENT SERVICES TO ASSISTANT COMMUNITY MANAGER

Please join us in congratulating Kimberly Darby on her promotion to Assistant Community Manager!

KIMBERLY JOINED the Willowsford Team in January 2022. Starting in Resident Services, her can-do attitude was the first friendly face residents encountered. Since then, Kimberly has grown alongside the organization. Within two years, she was promoted to HR Coordinator and quickly moved to Executive Administrative Assistant. During this time, she gained a deeper understanding of the Willowsford lifestyle, operations, and community needs.

The end of 2025 marked a significant change in the management team at Willowsford. With several unexpected departures, Kimberly’s role quickly expanded. She moved from a primarily support-focused position into one requiring leadership, decision-making, and oversight across multiple departments. The fast-paced environment

required adaptability, strong communication, and a willingness to step in wherever needed to keep operations running smoothly. Kimberly has embraced these challenges head-on, bringing continuity and a collaborative spirit to the team. Due to her professionalism and leadership, Kimberly was promoted to Assistant Community Manager. Kimberly’s journey reflects not only her professional growth but also her commitment to the Willowsford community and the residents she serves every day.

Sponsorship Opportunities Now Available at Willowsford

Willowsford is now inviting local businesses and community partners to become part of its 2026 Sponsorship Program, offering unique opportunities to connect with one of Northern Virginia’s most active and engaged communities.

Built around the community’s “Inspired Living” vision, Willowsford’s lifestyle programming brings residents together through memorable events, award-winning amenities, and meaningful local connections. Sponsorship opportunities are designed to help businesses increase visibility while supporting experiences that residents know and love.

With more than 6,000 single-family homeowners and a robust calendar of community events, sponsors gain direct

access to a highly engaged audience through event participation, digital promotions, social media recognition, and community-wide communications.

The 2026 Signature Event lineup includes some of Willowsford’s most anticipated annual traditions, including Family Picnic & Fireworks on June 26, AutumnFest on October 17, and Winter Wonderland on December 12 and 13. These events regularly attract between 600 and 3,000 residents and guests, creating exciting opportunities for businesses to build relationships and brand recognition within the community. Depending on sponsorship level, participating businesses may receive exhibitor space at events, logo placement on event signage and giveaways, social media shoutouts, recognition in event

emails, and additional promotional opportunities throughout the year. The package also includes opportunities tied to Willowsford’s popular First Friday Happy Hour series.

Willowsford’s sponsorship program reflects the community’s continued commitment to supporting local businesses while creating memorable experiences for residents of all ages. By partnering with the HOA, sponsors become part of the lifestyle and traditions that make Willowsford a truly unique place to live.

Businesses interested in learning more about sponsorship opportunities can contact the Willowsford Lifestyle Team or visit www.WillowsfordLife.com for additional information.

A Wild Guest at Willow Lake

THIS PAST APRIL, residents and Conservancy staff were treated to an exciting wildlife sighting, a North American river otter in Willow Lake!

These playful, semi-aquatic mammals are a wonderful indicator of healthy waterways and thriving ecosystems. River otters are well adapted for life both in and out of the water. With streamlined bodies, webbed feet, and powerful tails, they are excellent swimmers, capable of diving and twisting with impressive agility. They primarily feed on fish, but their diet can also include crayfish, frogs, and occasionally small mammals or birds. As opportunistic hunters, otters help maintain balance in aquatic ecosystems by keeping prey populations in check.

One of the most common questions we got after the otter sighting was “How did it get here?” While they spend much of their time in water, they are also known to move overland between ponds, lakes, streams, and wetlands, sometimes covering several miles in search of food or new territory. Although an otter may stay in one area for a period of time, they are often transient, especially if food sources shift or competition arises. Our community is fortunate to be surrounded by a network of wetlands, creeks, and ponds that provide ideal habitat for river otters. These interconnected waterways create natural corridors that allow wildlife to move freely and thrive. Other spots to keep an eye out for otters include Cedar Pond and Beaver Dam Pond in The Greens.

If you do spot an otter, enjoy the moment from a distance and help protect their habitat by keeping our waterways clean and undisturbed. Be sure to report sightings to our staff so we can better monitor the wildlife living in Willowsford.

The Summer Harvest

What’s growing at Willowsford Farm this summer!

When summer arrives in the mid-Atlantic, the Willowsford Farm Stands and CSA boxes are abundant with fresh seasonal favorites. Here’s what to look for from June through August and a couple of surprises worth seeking out.

Tomatoes are the undisputed centerpiece of summer and a community favorite! Cherry tomatoes make their CSA debut in late June and by mid July are the most popular item at the Farm Stands. Slicer tomatoes aren’t far behind, with colorful yellow and red varieties available. Eat them simply, a slice, some salt, maybe a little olive oil, and they don’t need much else. These tomatoes are also a great choice for sandwiches and burgers on the grill. Our Willowsford Farmers love peppers, and we grow several different options ranging from sweet to blazing hot. Lunchbox peppers, also known as Sweet Snacking Peppers, are a great way to add veggies to your family’s diet. These small peppers have the perfect crunch and sweet flavor. You can eat them raw, with a bit of dressing, or chop them up to add to cooked dishes that call for bell peppers. These peppers are popular; they will often sell out at the Farm Stand when school starts in late August, since they are a perfect school lunch pick!

Summer squash and zucchini also arrive in June and July and are popular through August. Growers in the region often joke that squash season is when all that talk about loving Zoodles (zucchini noodles) comes into fruition! Zephyr squash, cucumbers and the ubiquitous zucchini all flourish in the humid summer heat. Slice them thin, sauté them quickly, or grill them alongside whatever else is coming in your CSA share. These summer squashes are rich in nutrients and flavor and easy to add to a variety of dishes.

We can’t forget everyone’s favorite summer fruit: peaches! Our partners at Beechwood Orchards grow incredible juicy peaches that you just can’t get

enough of. More than just for snacking, we recommend trying grilled peaches in a fresh summer salad, a peach cobbler for your get-togethers and home-made sweet peach tea.

Want to try a new veggie this year? Okra thrives in the Chesapeake region’s hot, humid summers in a way it simply can’t in cooler climates, and local-grown okra is a different experience from the tough, travel-weary pods found in grocery stores. Harvested young, under three inches, it’s tender, not slimy, and takes beautifully to high-heat cooking. Look for it at the Farm Stands from July onward, and try it roasted or quickly stir-fried to let the flavor come through without the texture complaints it often unfairly receives. Fairy tale eggplants, the small, slender, purple-and-white striped variety, are another regional standout worth seeking out. Unlike their

larger counterparts, fairy tale eggplants have thin skin, virtually no seeds, and a mild, creamy flesh that doesn’t require salting before cooking. They’ll appear in CSA shares and at the Farm Stand from midsummer through early fall, and are excellent halved and grilled, roasted whole, or tucked into a quick sauté with whatever else the season is offering. Our Farm Team recommends trying them tempura-battered and fried for a texture and flavor bomb!

Summer is the perfect time to explore more seasonal eating. Produce during this season is very approachable and quite varied. There’s always something new to try and almost endless ways to cook each vegetable alone or paired with other seasonal favorites! Check out the current seasonal selection by visiting one of the Willowsford Farm Stands or browsing the Online Farm Store.

Turning paintball battles into charity wins

The Foundation is an organization started by neighbors within the Willowsford community. While this group has faced many challenges in their own lives, they know that they’ve been blessed with tremendous success and hold a strong sense of pride for their community. Consequently, they want to do more – they want to be neighbors who help their fellow neighbors! This group enjoys camaraderie and friendly competition. The Foundation’s events tend to be fun, boisterous, and competitive! The goal is simple – bring people together to support our community while having as much fun as possible!

On April 10, 2026, The Foundation members and friends met at Pev’s Paintball for a fun-filled paintball

competition. The Foundation group was split into two teams, and no mercy was shown! Over the last few years, some “friendly” rivalries have developed. We each have our favorite targets – most notably, The Foundation president, Keith Hample! There’s no louder chorus of cheers when you’re able to plaster your friend with paint! After the games were complete, The Foundation Paintball group enjoyed tasty pizza and wings from our favorite provider, baddpizza. This is a great chance to chide your opponents and lick your wounds over good food and an assortment of frosty beverages!

The Foundation hosts paintball competitions twice annually. Everyone is welcome to attend! Each Foundation Paintball event raises money for a specific

charity, such as Loudoun Hunger Relief or Dulles South Food Pantry. All proceeds from The Foundation events go directly to the intended charitable organization. The Fall Foundation Paintball event is still in the planning stages, but we anticipate it to be in the late October/early November timeframe. We will get the date and location out to Stroll as soon as everything is set so all Willowsford can prepare to join us! Bring your own team or join the group! You will have a ton of fun, donate to a great cause, surround yourself with other fantastic folks, and relive some childhood memories!

LUXURY TRAVELS

Your

Neighbors. Your Travel Experts. Your Adventure Awaits.

WRITTEN

BY STROLL WILLOWSFORD STAFF WRITER LIA HOBEL

There’s something special about knowing that the advisors planning your dream vacation live right here in the neighborhood — that they walk the same paths, attend the same community events, and share the same deep appreciation for this remarkable place we call home. For over 13 years, Kevin and Michelle have been proud Willowsford residents, and through NoVA Luxury Travels, they’ve turned a shared passion for exploration into a full-service concierge travel experience for friends, family, and neighbors alike.

From Wanderlust to a Calling

Travel has always been woven into the fabric of both their lives — trading daily routines for bonding time, making lifelong memories, and exploring destinations that ranged from gorgeous beaches and beloved theme parks to international journeys. Their very first vacation together was a cruise to Alaska, and their desire to travel continued to grow. Now, their greatest joy comes from exploring the world with their children, introducing them to different cultures and watching them grow through real-life experiences.

Over the years, Kevin and Michelle naturally became the trusted source for travel advice within their circle. Friends and family increasingly relied on their insight and experience, turning to them time and again for recommendations. What began as a passion soon evolved into purpose, making the launch of NoVA Luxury Travels as a husband-and-wife team a seamless and exciting next chapter.

The Perfect Planning Partnership

Kevin and Michelle are quick to joke that they’re the perfect travel planning duo precisely because they’re wired differently — and that difference is a genuine benefit to their clients. As a former event planner, Michelle is the detail architect: confirming every specific item in a booking, noting every special request, and anticipating the “what-ifs” before they ever become issues. Kevin brings the big-picture enthusiasm — researching destinations, staying on top of travel news and industry trends, and making sure clients feel genuinely excited about what lies ahead. Together,

they constantly collaborate and bounce ideas off each other to craft the best possible experiences. Clients can reach either one of them and always receive attentive, expert care.

Why a Luxury Travel Advisor Changes Everything

“We are in an age when anyone can book a trip online, but is that process actually worth your time?” asks Michelle. You could spend hours running searches, comparing options, second-guessing reviews, and wondering whether that “highly rated” excursion is genuinely worth it or just wellmarketed. Working with NoVA Luxury Travels means you hand off the research, the comparison shopping, and the decision fatigue — and you get back your time, your peace of mind, and a fully customized vacation built to your exact specifications. And if something goes wrong — a flight delay, a room that isn’t what was promised, a port cancellation — you won’t be on hold with a 1-800 number. You’ll have someone who knows you, knows your trip, and solves problems behind the scenes so you can stay focused on enjoying your vacation.

Crafting Unforgettable Journeys

Kevin and Michelle’s portfolio of planned trips spans the globe. One standout: helping newlyweds plan an 11-day journey through Greece — Athens, the breathtaking monasteries of Meteora, and island hopping through Paros, Naxos, and Santorini — complete with boutique hotels, private experiences, and deeply personal moments, including a coordinated family reunion that made the trip truly extraordinary.

Looking ahead, Kevin and Michelle have some remarkable adventures of their own: a circumnavigation of Iceland timed to witness a solar eclipse, a European river cruise through iconic Christmas markets, and the inaugural voyage of Legend of the Seas — the newest and largest cruise ship in the world — sailing from Rome on a spectacular Mediterranean journey. They firmly believe that the best travel advisors are also passionate travelers, and every experience they have makes them wiser and more equipped to serve their clients.

Your Neighbors. Your Travel Partners

What sets NoVA Luxury Travels apart for Willowsford residents isn’t just expertise

— it’s context. Kevin and Michelle have called this community home for over 13 years. They understand the rhythm of life here, the local school calendars, the family celebrations, and what neighbors value. They don’t just “sell travel” — they develop genuine friendships, learn preferences, and design one-of-a-kind journeys that fit real lives.

Kevin even built a dedicated webpage featuring curated vacation ideas timed around LCPS school breaks — a personalized starting point that can be tailored to any family’s interests and budget. And for neighbors looking for something truly immersive, they’ve launched guided group travel experiences where clients vacation alongside Kevin and Michelle with hands-on support at every step. This fall, they’re hosting an exclusive, private VIP Halloween Horror Nights experience at Universal Orlando — limited to just 12 guests — with a weekend of haunted houses, late-night celebrations at the Dead Coconut Club, and plenty of shared screams and laughs along the way. It’s just the beginning of what they have planned.

Always Learning, Always Traveling

Staying ahead in the travel industry takes real commitment, and it’s something Kevin and Michelle invest in constantly. Between them, they hold certifications with every major ocean, river, and luxury cruise line. Michelle is a Certified Travel Associate (CTA) and ASTA Verified Travel Advisor (VTA), while Kevin holds his CLIA Certified Cruise Counselor (CCC) certification — credentials that represent hundreds of hours of study, testing, and hands-on learning.

They also regularly attend industry events and conventions, fostering relationships and developing insights that simply can’t be replicated online. Earlier this year, Michelle traveled to Amsterdam for a river cruise expo where she personally toured 16 ships and met with representatives from more than a dozen cruise lines. Another pivotal industry trip led her to South Africa, where she explored Cape Town’s dramatic coastlines,

the Franschhoek Valley for wine tasting, and Kruger National Park for twice-daily game drives. Beyond the “pinch-yourself” moments and onsite learning, she built partnerships with local suppliers and has an overflowing collection of personal recommendations as she crafts African adventures for their clients.

What Neighbors Are Saying

“Our experience with NoVA Luxury Travels has been nothing short of exceptional. From the very beginning, Kevin went above and beyond to make sure every detail of our anniversary cruise was perfectly planned… His attention to detail and ongoing follow-up with updates have given us complete peace of mind. Knowing that NoVA Luxury Travels is there to support us every step of the way makes this a truly worry-free and exciting experience.”

AMANDA STOERMER, THE GROVE

“Michelle and Kevin have been wonderful to work with while planning our Hawaii trip. Their insight and firsthand knowledge have made the whole planning process simple and stress-free. We really appreciate their thoughtful recommendations and would happily work with them again!”

A Brew-tiful Morning at Coffee & Connections

ON A CRISP MARCH MORNING, the kind that hints at spring just around the corner, familiar faces and new connections gathered for Stroll Coffee & Connections, a bi-monthly gathering that continues to bring people together. Held on Thursday, March 26, from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m., this bi-monthly exclusive networking event offered a chance to step away from the day’s usual pace and build meaningful relationships.

Hosted at the picturesque Old Farm Winery at Hartland, the setting alone is worth the visit. Attendees met at the Longfield Pavilion, tucked just behind the historic Longfield Manor, a quiet, inviting backdrop.

But what makes Coffee & Connections stand out isn’t just the scenery, it’s the purpose behind it.

This gathering is intentionally designed to bring together Preferred Partners from Stroll Willowsford and BeLocal Loudoun County, Stroll’s sister publication, alongside Willowsford residents in a way that feels natural and unforced. There’s no pressure, no formal agenda, just genuine conversation. It’s the kind of environment where a simple introduction can turn into a trusted referral, a new partnership, or even a lasting friendship.

The morning began with a generous assortment of breakfast offerings and fresh coffee, thoughtfully provided by the winery, creating a relaxed start to the morning as conversations naturally unfolded.

A favorite moment of the morning came with the door prizes, a tradition that brings added energy to the event. Attendees enjoy the opportunity to contribute something they personally love, and each person who brings a door prize has a brief opportunity to introduce themselves. It’s a simple but effective way to put a face to a name and keep the conversation going. Over time, these gatherings have become more than just networking events. They’ve grown into a cornerstone of how this community connects, where conversations feel easy, introductions feel meaningful, and business relationships are built the way they always have been: face-to-face, with a handshake and a shared cup of coffee.

Whether attendees came to meet someone new, reconnect with familiar faces, or simply step away from the day’s usual pace, Stroll Coffee & Connections offered something valuable: a chance to be both productive and present at the same time. And in a world that rarely slows down, that might be the most valuable connection of all.

Strike Up the Fun

A local studio is making music lessons note-ably awesome!

If you’re looking for music lessons in the area, I suggest The Music Loft! I have been taking lessons there for two years. It was very helpful when I was beginning middle school with the music requirement, and I was hoping to get a head start playing the viola. The lessons are still extremely helpful, allowing me to advance quickly and to feel confident in my playing. I went to Hovatter Elementary School, and one of my music teachers there, Mr. Readyoff, has a special connection to the Music Loft, as his mom, Ms. Laura Readyoff, is the owner! The Music Loft has two locations - one in Herndon and one in Reston. They teach both kids and adults, playing almost any instrument. They rent instruments, too! They also provide opportunities for performances outside of the lessons. All of the music instructors there are incredibly nice. I have gotten to work with many of them, including Ms. Laura herself. They are all exceptionally kind and helpful, and I have learned so much under their guidance. I spoke to Ms. Laura to find out more to share about The Music Loft.

How did The Music Loft get started?

I was an orchestra teacher in both Long Island and Virginia, and my students often asked where they could take private lessons. I couldn’t find a place that truly matched what I wanted for them, so I decided to create one in 2010!

At The Music Loft, it’s important that every student—no matter their level— feels welcome and supported. We have beautiful studios, amazing teachers, and even instruments available to rent so students can get started easily.

What instruments does The Music Loft provide instruction for? We have 26 teachers, each specializing in different instruments. Students can learn piano, voice, strings (like violin, viola, cello, and bass), woodwinds, guitar, electric bass, and drums. We also offer The Royal Conservatory of Music Certificate Program, which is perfect for students who love a challenge and earn their certificate of achievement for each level of RCM. We also have ensemble programs where students can play and perform together.

When would you recommend starting lessons? Students can start as young as 6, but really, anytime is a great time to begin. Music is something you can enjoy for your whole life, and it gives you a way to express yourself in a creative and meaningful way.

Tell me more about the NoVa Youth Ensembles and the NoVa Choral Ensemble. NoVa Youth Ensembles (NYE) offers students a place to perform more challenging music outside of school. We currently offer Orchestra and Choir. In the next few years, it is our goal to also offer a wind ensemble and a guitar ensemble. Our orchestra students have had exciting opportunities, including performing with the Reston Community Orchestra. The ensemble performed alongside them for the world premiere of local composer Ron Planting’s piece “Legend Suite”.

The orchestra has also been invited to perform at Carnegie Hall. This September, we’re also launching a choral ensemble for 5th–7th graders. We are firming up plans to partner with the Reston Chorale in order to give students the opportunity to perform with professional singers!

What is your biggest accomplishment at The Music Loft? We’ve received many awards, but what matters most to us is our students. Seeing them grow— not just as musicians, but as kind and confident people—that is our greatest accomplishment.

Are there any special events coming up, or anything else you’d like to share? We’ve had an exciting year with performances at places like Dulles Town Center, Ashby Ponds, and the Herndon Senior Center. Students performed at the first-ever TEDx Youth Talks at Belmont Ridge, and we had a huge Bach Recital where we dressed up from the 1700’s! We have one last Royal Conservatory Exam coming up, and of course, our performance at Carnegie Hall. We also offer a flexible summer lesson program, so students can keep improving while still enjoying their summer break. I hope many of you will join us for a great musical experience!

Nature as a Neighbor

In a fast-changing landscape, Willowsford is working to keep nature— and peace—intact.

Across Loudoun County, the landscape is changing—and quickly.

Data centers now rise where fields and forests once defined the Loudoun County horizon, bringing a new reality for nearby neighborhoods. In some cases, that change arrives abruptly. An image published in March 2026 by The Washington Post shows homes in an adjacent community sitting just yards from a data center, separated by little more than a thin line of shrubs—technically a buffer, but not one that meaningfully separates a neighborhood from something that large.

In Willowsford, the response has been more deliberate. Across more than 2,600 acres of Conservancy land, the focus has been on shaping not just open space, but the experience of living here. At the edges, where development presses in, the approach has been to create depth with layers of trees and natural plantings designed to grow into a true buffer over time.

From above, those buffers read as more than a tree line. They soften—and in some places nearly obscure—what lies beyond. On the ground, the effect is quieter: you don’t think about what’s being blocked, because you don’t really see it. These buffers do more than shape a view. They help filter stormwater, soften sound, reduce heat, and support habitat. What looks simple is actually doing important work.

Of course, not every boundary can be protected this way. Development in Loudoun County continues to move

quickly, and there are limits to what any one organization can control.

But the Willowsford Conservancy continues to work with the HOA, the County, and neighboring landowners and businesses to push for better transitions wherever possible.

Because as the region evolves, the difference between minimal screening and meaningful separation becomes clearer.

And for residents, that difference shows up in a simple way: your backyard still feels like your backyard.

Sometimes, the most important part of a view… is what you never have to see.

If you have questions or concerns about buffers or the areas near your home, the Conservancy welcomes your input and wants to hear from you. Please reach out atboard@ willowsfordconservancy.org.

DOUGH MUCH FUN

Junior Writers rise to the occasion with a delicious visit to American Kolache!

For our April Stroll Junior Writer Meeting, we visited American Kolache. American Kolache is located in Ashburn, near the Ashburn Ice Rink, and has been open for a few months. To begin our meeting, we learned about the history of this amazing food and then we were even able to make our own!

Mr. and Mrs. Alex and Jing Stimpson— the owners of American Kolache— (bonus: they are Willowsford residents!) first told us that they found out about kolache, a traditional Czech pastry, in the Midwest, where it had spread in popularity from Texas. They loved the food and decided to bring it to our area. American Kolache typically has around 35 flavors of Kolache available daily, divided into two categories: sweet and savory. Kolache is a filling wrapped up in a bun, so the type changes based on the

filling inside it, and the ingredients in the bun, which can make it sweeter or saltier. They also informed us that their bakers begin at 3:00 am in order to make all of the kolaches for the day and clean up the kitchen before their first customers walk in at 6:00 am. Talk about an early job! We then followed Mr. and Mrs. Stimpson into the kitchen to make our own kolaches! They showed us around the kitchen, and we learned how some of the machinery works. After putting on hairnets and gloves (and of course, washing our hands), we got started! First, we made two savory kolaches with a fivecheese mac and cheese filling, which is a new flavor for American Kolache. Once we kneaded the dough and filled them without overstuffing, those kolaches were placed in an oven to bake. After that, we made two sweet s’mores kolaches with

graham crackers, chocolate chips, and marshmallow fluff wrapped up inside the dough ball. After the food came out, Mr. and Mrs. Stimpson boxed up our yummy treats to take home to enjoy. Every writer received an American Kolache swag bag, too! Parents were also able to order kolaches ahead, if they pleased, so they could try this amazing food.

Overall, many others and I believe that this was the coolest, most fun, and best Stroll meeting so far! From learning about this glorious food to making it, I think that this made the kolache one of my favorite dishes. Long live American Kolache!

kids to submit their own flavor creations, with the chance to have a kolache named after them if it makes the menu. Stop by this summer to taste what’s new—and maybe see your idea on the menu!

Life with Milo is loud, lively, and full of love.

THIS FEATURE SPONSORED BY CARDINAL PLUMBING HEATING & AIR

I want to tell you about my dog Milo. He was born on September 8, 2023, and he is 2 years old. We got him around Christmas as a gift from my mom and aunt. We love and care for him so much. He is not an only child. He has 2 siblings, Theo and Maple. Theo lives with my cousins Abby and Liam. Maple lives in my neighborhood in the Grove, with my friends Conner and Bella. Both of Milo’s siblings live happily with their owners.

Milo is caring, but he can also be a crazy troublemaker. He loves treats, playing fetch, and barking at the door. He also loves meeting new people and dogs. We take him for a walk three times a day. It can sometimes be hard work taking care of him. Something interesting is that we actually make special food and mix it with his dog food, and he likes it a lot. My dad says it is good for his digestion. I will share the recipe here.

He has a lot of different toys, and he is a destroyer of PetSmart products. One time, we got him a level 10 strength toy, and it didn’t even last a week. He likes running around with his toys and playing fetch with them, and he is almost never out of energy even after a day of play.

He always greets me as soon as I come home by jumping on me as I put my backpack down.

Milo’s Special Food:

• Six cups of filtered water

• 2 cups of brown rice

• 2 pounds of ground turkey

• 1 sweet potato

• 1 bag of frozen mixed vegetables (green beans, corn, carrots)

• 2 tablespoons dried rosemary

1. Put the water, brown rice, and ground turkey into a big pot and break up the ground turkey into small pieces.

2. Cook a sweet potato in the microwave for 5 minutes and peel and chop into small pieces.

3. Add rosemary and cook on medium heat about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally until the rice is cooked.

4. Turn heat down to low, add frozen vegetables and sweet potato and stir and continue to cook until water is gone.

5. Store in Tupperware in the fridge for up to 2 weeks and mix in equal parts with kibble when serving.

Cheers to Tea Time

A neighborhood favorite adds a charming new tea service—perfect for celebrating close to home.

TEA SERVICE REVIEW - BY ANNA

Are you looking for a good place close by to have tea? Check out Quattro Goombas, a winery and brewery that also sells pizza. They recently began offering tea service on weekends by reservation only. They already had a perfect spot to host them: a room off of their marketplace that used to be part of the brewery, then was converted to an office, and now is a secret spot for tea time. It is such a cute, cozy setting. There are just a few tables and two couches with armchairs for larger groups. The dress code is relaxed, so you can be fancy or casual, and it’s also kid-friendly. Adults get a welcome glass of sparkling wine, and they have a great choice of teas. The food is served all at once on a three-tiered tea stand, and the menu changes monthly. All of the finger sandwiches are delicious, and they have other savories like mini quiches, mini crab cakes, and sushi-inspired items. (Fun fact: Their chef has experience as a professional sushi chef and enjoys adding those flavors to the tea service!)

Sweets include yummy items like freshbaked scones, orange madeleines, matcha croissants, and petit fours. I love all the food, and my favorites are the matcha croissant and the cucumber finger sandwich. I definitely recommend visiting for tea time!

FAMILY WINERY EXPERIENCEBY PRESLEY

While the tea was great, if tea is not your

My family and I have gone to the winery multiple times and loved it! Every time we go, the food is great, and everyone ends up having a blast. My brother and I love to run in the open space and play. Most times we’ve gone have been during the summer. You might be thinking that going during the summer time would be too hot. Guess what? It’s not! If you want to be outside, Quattro Goombas has benches with picnic tables and mature trees for shade. They also have an indoor restaurant with fans

favorite part is that Quattro Goombas invites our furry friends to join us in the fun. We have brought our dog out with us many times, and she has always enjoyed going. I love that you can bring friends, family, and pets as well! Whether you want to go have tea, eat and play outside, or even hang out with friends, Quattro Goombas has something for everyone!

Gator

From PVI pride to Richmond roar

Meet Gavin, our own neighbor, who plays lacrosse for St. Paul VI High School!

As a senior, wearing number 1, Gavin Gilmore plays midfielder for PVI. He is a phenomenal player, a threat on offense, always scoring goals. He is committed to the University of Richmond for lacrosse, one of the top schools in the country. There, he will have fun and score more goals.

In college, Gavin will miss most the brotherhood and everyone at PVI. “I feel like PVI is just a great place to be, like, teachers, administration, Father Jonathan, [the priest] - everybody there is just amazing,” he said.

Before lacrosse, Gavin played football and basketball. He then started playing lacrosse in 5th grade. He started later after his dad encouraged him to explore other sports, and a coach suggested lacrosse. When PVI moved from Fairfax to Chantilly, Gavin went to some lacrosse games and decided he wanted to play for them.

He is motivated by his parents, all the sacrifices they make for him, and the money they invest in him. His favorite part of being on the team is being with all his friends and coaches. As much as he loves lacrosse, he also gets a lot of joy out of fishing. One of his favorite spots is The Lodge, where he fishes for catfish.

Gavin got the nickname Gator when a seventh-grade coach wanted better nicknames for the players. He thought of Gator, and that was perfect for Gavin because he was born just outside of Tampa.

His main advice for athletes who want to play in high school and college is to go all in! He said that practices can be boring, but in games, that’s where you start to shine and have fun. Stay focused, and don’t let anything else distract you. He said, “Playing sports when you’re younger, it’s time to have fun, meet new people. But in high school, in college, it’s more serious, and it’s just about giving it your all. That’s something I try to do every single time I’m on the field.”

Sprout

THERAPEUTIC

RIDING & EDUCATION CENTER

is already awake. Long before the first rider arrives, before the arenas fill with movement and encouragement, the quiet, unseen work of the day has begun.

Twenty-six horses and one very opinionated barn cat are already waiting. Nickers echo through the barn as the first staff member steps inside. Before a single grain bucket is filled, there’s a pause— eyes scanning all 26.67 acres. Fences are checked. Horses are counted. Heads are up, legs are moving—everything as it should be. The feel of the air, the direction of the wind, the kind of day it’s going to be—all quietly noted before the work begins.

From there, the day unfolds into something much larger than a routine. What follows is a carefully orchestrated, allday effort powered by a community.

Each week, more than 185 individuals are served with the support of over 100 volunteers. Lessons run from 10am–8pm most days. This rhythm continues six days a week, with lessons running in continuous 30-minute rotations across two arenas for up to 10 hours a day. Up to four instructors teach simultaneously. Riders mount, volunteers step into position, and horses change lives by meeting each individual where they are and helping them grow beyond what they thought possible.

Megan Bobby, Willowsford resident and Sprout supporter turned Fundraising Coordinator, shares “I’ve been involved with Sprout for many years, but working more closely with the organization has

This is what being a good neighbor looks like—showing up, lending a hand, and supporting people in your own community.”

opened my eyes to how much truly goes on behind the scenes. I used to think they simply found a horse and anyone could ride it—but there’s so much more to it. The Sprout team carefully evaluates each horse to ensure it’s the right fit for their riders’ unique physical and emotional needs. They go through dozens of horses before finding the perfect match. The level of care, patience, and intention they bring to building their herd is truly remarkable. It’s truly an entire system that has to be thoughtfully designed for each lesson— matching rider needs with the right horse’s skills and availability, aligning volunteers based on their strengths and schedules, and coordinating instructors for every 30-minute session. Balancing all of this, along with horse care, and countless moving pieces, requires an incredible amount of time, thought, and dedication.”

Over the years, Sprout’s programming has grown alongside the community it serves. What began in 2010 as an adaptive riding program has expanded through the combined expertise of skilled staff and

carefully selected horses into four areas of programming, two inclusive club offerings and summer camp — all designed to evolve with participants as they grow in age, ability, and independence, while also adapting to provide additional support when needed.

Office Manager, Judith Greer, Willowsford resident and mother of Sprout rider John Greer shares their Sprout story, “Our family found Sprout Therapeutic Riding and Education Center when we were searching for a place where our son could grow, connect, and truly be seen. What we found at Sprout was more than a therapy or extracurricular program for John. Sprout has become a circle of support that lifts our son with every ride. We are grateful every day for the volunteers who walk beside him, the donors who sustain the programs, and the neighbors who champion Sprout’s mission. Because of their commitment lives are strengthened, families are supported, and generosity becomes movement, connection, and possibility. Sprout showed us what

community looks like at its best—people giving their time, resources, and hearts so children can grow.”

Riders come with more than 53 different diagnoses, and every single one is supported through subsidized services. Insurance does not cover equine-assisted programs, which means access is made possible entirely through the support of others. That gap—between what it costs to run the farm and what families can afford—is where the community steps in. Families, volunteers, and donors from the Willowsford community help bridge the gap between what it costs to operate and what riders can afford.

Throughout the year, residents find multiple ways to engage and help with Sprout. Willowsford groups and events like The Big Give, Days of Service, Junior Writers, Coffee and Connections, and Hops for Horses create opportunities for connection, support and impact. Local service organizations such as YSML, NCL and Gateway Community Church contribute their time and energy, while

nearby schools play an active role in connecting students to the work. Lightridge, Independence, Rock Ridge, Freedom, and Broad Run High Schools students support Sprout through Key Club, National Honor Society, and athletic teams, help on weekends. John Champe’s Community Independence Instruction (CII) program visits weekly for hands-on vocational experience, and Willard Middle School’s 8th grade civics project highlights Sprout as a place of impact.

Throughout the year, residents also come together for key events that directly support Sprout’s mission, including Sprout on the Green on June 8th, the Gallop Gala is September 13th, Sprout 5K is October 25th, Horse Show May 31st, and monthly volunteer trainings are ongoing.

Green’s residents, Ryan and Meagan Lavin first came to Sprout for the Gallop Gala and visited after sponsoring Sprout horse, Olaf. Meagan shares, “Supporting Sprout has been incredibly meaningful for our family, especially being able to see the impact firsthand. One of the most special parts has been sharing the experience with our three kids by bringing them to the barn to meet Olaf and observe sessions. It’s opened their eyes in a way few things can, as they’ve seen how small moments, like a rider gaining confidence, balance, or even just a smile, are truly big victories. Those visits have helped them better understand empathy, inclusion, and the importance of community in a very real way.”

In 2025 alone, volunteers contributed 17,868 hours—many from the Willowsford community—transforming what would be impossible into something sustainable.

Volunteers are the heartbeat of daily operations. From Willowsford and beyond, they show up in all seasons— leading horses, walking beside riders, cleaning fields, repairing fences, organizing equipment, and supporting every aspect of the farm.

“I am continually impressed by the Sprout community. Everyone is treated with kindness and respect, and there is a shared sense of purpose. No one sees themselves as above anyone else—we are all simply doing our best to support an organization that creates lasting change.”

WYLAND

“This is what being a good neighbor looks like—showing up, lending a hand, and supporting people in your own

community. What makes it even more special is seeing volunteers of all ages working side by side. You learn from each other, you appreciate different perspectives, and it builds a kind of respect you don’t always find anymore.”

What happens in the arena is only a fraction of the story. For every moment a rider spends in the saddle, there are countless unseen moments that make it possible—early mornings, late evenings, careful planning, physical labor, fundraising and a deep commitment to doing things the right way.

Sprout is not just a place. It is a network of people who believe in what is possible when individuals are given the opportunity to grow, to be challenged, and to be seen beyond limitations. It is a farm powered not just by horses, but by a community—one that continues to show up, give back, and make the impossible… possible every single day.

THE POWER OF ONE COMMUNITY

Sprout + Willowsford, By the Numbers

At Sprout, progress is built one ride, one relationship, and one moment at a time. What makes that possible is the strength of the Willowsford community standing behind it.

• 100+ students supported through adaptive riding and therapeutic programs

• 315 donations from Willowsford Residents

• 198 Willowsford Volunteers giving their time across lessons, care, and daily operations

Together, these numbers reflect more than participation— they represent a community choosing to invest in growth, inclusion, and possibility.

This is Willowsford showing up for Sprout. Interested in being part of it? Whether it’s attending an event, volunteering your time, or supporting a rider, there are simple ways to step in—just like so many in this community already have.

Savoring the Season McLaughlin FAMILY meet

BY CHANTILLY NATIONAL GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB

BY FAMILY FEATURE WRITER SHAYDA WINDLE, PHOTOGRAPHY BY PHOTOS BY LIS THIS FEATURE SPONSORED

Dallas and Wayne McLaughlin are experiencing a stage of life many parents anticipate —watching their children mature into young adults. “It’s rewarding and so much fun to see them discovering who they are and growing in confidence,” Dallas shares.

Originally from Texas, Dallas still fondly recalls the familiar comforts of home—Blue Bell ice cream, authentic Mexican cuisine, and the lively spirit and activity of Texas culture. Wayne, who grew up in Pinehurst, North Carolina, occasionally misses the timeless charm of the golf community that shaped his early years. Since 2017, the couple has built a meaningful life in The Grove, creating a warm and welcoming home for their four children. Two are now adults, while Presley (13) and Weston (11) continue to bring energy, laughter, and activity to the household.

Presley has found her stride in the equestrian world. She rides at Tail Race Farm, volunteers during holiday and summer camp weeks with younger riders, and has spent the last six years

developing her skills in the saddle. Owning a horse of her own is firmly on her horizon. Weston, meanwhile, is all about team sports and splits his time between basketball and football, with golf on deck for the first time this year.

Both Dallas and Wayne served in the U.S. Air Force before transitioning into civilian careers. Dallas now works for Salesforce in the public sector, while Wayne is with a government contractor. Outside of work, Dallas enjoys reading, exploring new adventures with the family, and staying connected to their church community. Wayne can be found in two places, the gym and the yard. “He is an avid lawn master. You can find him every day the sun is shining outside tending to the grass, trees and plants.” Notably, Wayne earned his Certified Turfgrass Professional certification from Virginia Tech in 2024, so this may be more than a hobby.

The McLaughlins also share their home with a 125-pound Black Russian Terrier, Willow. BRT’s are still a rare breed in the U.S., she is often mistaken for a

Giant Schnauzer. “The grooming required is a lot,” the family admits, “but we love her beard. It makes her look majestic.” Willow lives for the snowy winter months, and hides during the heat of the summer. Fiercely loyal, their dog keeps a watchful eye over both the home and the neighborhood kids nearby.

Travel is one of the ways they create lasting memories together. Each year, Dallas and Wayne gift their children experiences in place of gifts, often vacation plans, for Christmas. Recent favorites include a week traveling around Arizona, where they explored the Grand Canyon, Horseshoe Bend, Antelope Canyon, and Sedona. “It was such a magical trip, we did not expect it to be one of our favorite vacations, but it was a blast” Dallas says. Another favorite was a Christmas cruise through the Caribbean.

“Priority for us is to spend time as a family. We are keenly aware that there are only so many summers we have with the last two kids at home.” Next up on the wish list for this family is a cruise to Panama, a trip to Italy where Dallas used to live, and a relaxing trip to Hawaii.

Looking ahead, the McLaughlins remain intentional about making the most of their time together while their children are still at home. With busy schedules and changing seasons of life, they place a high value on shared experiences and meaningful connection. Future plans include a family reunion, a summer trip to Tennessee to see grandparents, and

Thanksgiving with family at the beach, but their true focus remains simple: being present with one another and appreciating the moments that matter most.

BUZZIN’ AROUND TOWN

A

cheerful ride that’s all about fun, flair, and family memories

RESIDENT AND JUNIOR WRITER EVELYN ROSE THIS FEATURE SPONSORED BY HILLYARD AUTOMOTIVE

Our family recently got a new car that my mom has been really excited about. Lots of people ask us questions about it, so I decided to interview her to share more. She’s easy to spot in the neighborhood, so if you see her, give her a wave!

What made you pick a Volkswagen ID. Buzz? I’ve wanted a Buzz since VW first announced them several years ago. My first car was a 1971 VW Super Beetle with Autostick in Iberian Red, and it was quirky and fun to drive. That started my love of Beetles, which spread to VW buses. When I saw the concept photos of the Buzz, I was sold!

Tell us about your nickname for the bus. We call our Buzz 'Nuprin' because she’s “Little. Yellow. Different.” (It’s from

an advertisement from the 80’s and parodied in a movie called Wayne's World –I’m old and easily entertained!) But we also call her The Party Bus, Happy Mobile, and Merry Mobile at the holidays!

How has the Buzz been different from other vehicles you’ve owned?

It’s been a very whimsical experience that builds on itself. Right after we got it, we signed up to be a car for the Hovatter and Henrietta Lacks Haunted Hive Trunk-orTreat. We did a bee theme, and it was lots of fun to put together! We also decked the Buzz out for Halloween to give out candy in the driveway. Then for the holidays, I had a car nose and antlers, magnetic light decorations, and a blow-up passenger Santa to make it festive. I got a sunshade cover with eyes and a smile sticker as a Christmas gift, and that gives Nuprin extra personality for everyday fun.

What do you like best about the Buzz?

There are so many things I love! It’s fully electric and makes a great car for “buzzing” around town, haha. The heat/ cool/massage functions of the seats get a lot of use. The infotainment system makes me laugh, with the fun facts and cute seasonal screen displays. It has some minivan

"Our family knows the high cost of repairing and maintaining your vehicle. My experience gained at a major auto dealership I know to exceed the expectation of each customer that comes through the door, whether for the first time or for a return visit. Let us care for you and your car. "

features I really appreciate and missed in SUVs, like sliding doors. Details like unique storage spaces and an AC outlet come in handy often. And I love that we can pile in extra friends, music instruments, furniture – we even turn it into a “mobile clubhouse” and load up blankets and pillows in the back for picnics. It’s been really great for lots of smiles and making memories!

Did anything about the Buzz surprise you? I was nervous about the yellow color at first, but when I saw it in person, I was smitten! I’m surprised at how often we get stopped to talk about the bus – that’s been so much fun. Being a family in the automotive industry means I’ve been lucky to drive all sorts of cars through the years – this one is definitely in my top 3 favorites of all time!

Willowsford Dogs love Furever K9!

BROADWAY, BUT MAKE IT LOCAL

A hometown cast delivers big-stage magic up close.

IN MARCH, I had the pleasure of seeing West Side Story at the National Conference Center performed by Northern Virginia Performing Arts under the direction of Anthony Cimino-Johnson and Tori Council, alongside my friend Sofia Correa and my mom, Stacie Isaacs. It was a beautiful and moving story about two rival groups, the Sharks and the Jets, and a love that defies the boundaries between them. Tony, a member of the Jets, falls in love with Maria, a member of the Sharks, in a Romeo and Juliet-esque fashion. It was an absolutely amazing performance, full of heart and soul. The choreography by Danielle Sirinsky was spectacular, the singers (under the vocal direction of Shelby Milgram) were incredible, and the experience felt wonderfully immersive and interactive by being a theater format (also known as a round) with seating on all four sides of the performance.

Sofia and I had the opportunity to interview several cast members after the show. We asked them each what their favorite role/production they have gotten to perform so far, and what they loved the most about this production of West Side Story, and here is what they had to say:

• Maggie McBride — Graziella

Favorite Production: The Prince of Egypt

“There have been so many great moments. It’s been really fun because there’s so much dancing, and the music from West Side Story is so famous and energetic. It’s been wonderful getting to perform a show with such iconic music and choreography.”

• Palmer Jolly — Riff

Favorite Production: West Side Story

“It’s been an amazing journey. I absolutely love the people here, and getting to spend time with them every

day and every night over the past few weeks has been an incredible experience. I also love that we performed this show on the round — it allows us to move around more freely, though it’s also a great challenge to make sure every angle looks its best.”

• Raheem “RJ” Richardson — Tony

Favorite Production: Bring It On

“I’ve been loving it — it’s an amazing time, though it is a lot of work.

Some of us are performing in two different shows, so it’s a lot to carry.

But it’s all worth it. I wouldn’t have had it any other way.”

• Nashwa Laure Braimi — Anita

Favorite Production: West Side Story

“It’s been amazing. From the very first day — even just the read-through — I could tell that everyone was incredibly passionate and ready to bring this musical to life. Everyone

had a deep love for the music, the dancing, and the acting, and it all came together beautifully in the end.”

• Derrick Formey Jr. — Bernardo Favorite Production: Rent

“With any production there are going to be good days and bad days — there were some challenges we had to work

through. Once we got past those, it was smooth sailing. The energy got really good, really fun. The sense of community was so strong; we all became very close, and together we created something truly beautiful.”

• Ella Diawatan — Maria Favorite Production: Hadestown

“It’s been a rollercoaster of emotions, but so much fun. It’s a very intense and mature show — a little different from what I’ve done before — but it’s been a truly rewarding experience.”

West Side Story is a timeless classic, and Northern Virginia Performing Arts brought it to life in a way that was truly unforgettable, and features students from all over Northern Virginia.

From the powerful performances to the awesome choreography, every element of the show came together to create an emotional viewing experience. Speaking with the cast only deepened our appreciation for the dedication and passion that went into every rehearsal and every performance. If you have the chance to see any future production from Northern Virginia Performing Arts, don’t miss it, it is well worth every moment. Teak That Took Time

Furniture so good, it outlived five generations and still swings.

Two pieces of furniture were moved into the Saraiya house last month, and both of them are older than every person currently living in it (by a lot). A chaise and a swing, handed down through five generations of my family, now sit in rooms they’ve never seen before. My great-great-great-grandfather commissioned them around 150 years ago, which means they’ve outlasted empires, international wars, and still function exactly the same as when they were built.

Both the chaise and swing are made from Burmese wood, imported into India. Back then, Burmese teak was the material you used if you wanted something to last, as it was dense, oil-rich, and nearly impossible to rot. My ancestors had it shipped across the Bay of Bengal into India, where a group of craftsmen took the raw wood and turned it into these two masterpieces by hand. What they made has not only outlived them by over a century, but has made a lasting impact on our family.

The chaise is long, with carved detailing along the legs and frame that hasn’t worn down despite a century and a half of use.

The swing is even more surprising, as suspended seating from that usually doesn’t survive, but this one does. You can sit on it today, and it moves the way it was designed to move, without any creaks, wobbles, or anything patched together. The joinery is still tight and the wood is still solid all the way through.

What strikes me most isn’t the age. It’s the fact that nothing about either piece has been replaced. The teak my great-greatgreat-grandfather bought is the teak I sit on every day. The carvings someone made by hand in India in the 1870s are the same carvings sitting in our living room now. Furniture today is built to last a decade if you’re lucky. However, these were built to be inherited, and five generations later, that’s exactly what happened.

Having them in our house feels less like owning antiques and more like being handed something between generations that we’re now expected to continue. The next person to sit on that swing might be someone who hasn’t been born yet. Given the track record, the furniture will probably still be working fine when they do.

Real Estate

What Makes the Selling Experience Truly Exceptional?

Deborah:

Many homeowners think selling is simply putting a home on the market and waiting for offers, but the strongest outcomes usually come from much more than that. What does a truly full-service experience look like for a seller today?

Michelle:

It is when clients feel supported from start to finish. From helping decide which improvements are worth making, to preparing the home to shine, to creating marketing that builds buyer excitement, and even helping navigate Willowsford HOA details, every step matters.

Deborah:

A recent example was our sale at 41258 Chatham Green Circle, which closed $40,000 over asking. While we were thrilled with the final number, what meant even more was hearing how supported our clients felt throughout the process.

A Neighbor’s Perspective

" Working with Michelle Stanko and Deborah Davis of The Pearl Team was an outstanding experience from start to finish! We were immediately impressed with their process and felt completely confident in their approach, knowing that we were in truly good hands. Their dedication to our goals was evident every step of the way.

They gave us excellent advice getting our home ready for the market and were not afraid to roll up their sleeves and help get things done. The personalized coloring sheets and neighbor pop-by invites were excellent touches that helped our listing stand out.

What really sets them apart is their balanced approach: they are incredibly professional and taking the job seriously, but they are also

wonderfully down to earth. They successfully managed our anxiety throughout the entire process. Plus, their strong negotiation skills secured us a free rent back, which will make our move seamless.

If you want a realtor that you can trust, has a great track record, really listens and puts your needs first, we recommend Michelle Stanko and Deborah Davis of The Pearl Team!"

Michelle:

That review meant a lot to us because it captured exactly what we strive for. We want our clients to know they are not navigating this alone. We are hands-on, deeply invested, and always looking for both the financial win and the personal win.

Deborah:

For Chatham Green Circle, that meant everything from staging guidance and neighborhood outreach to carefully negotiating terms that gave the family flexibility after closing.

Michelle:

Exceptional results are wonderful, but our greatest success is when clients walk away feeling protected, understood, and excited about what comes next. Call us at 703-568-7868 if you want to learn more.
