CHANGING TIMES

In the year of 1944 through 1945 I attended the Northampton School for Girls, taking a subfreshman course that is no longer offered. I started off to school every morning at 7:30—I was compelled to ride my, bicycle in rain or shine. We started school at the same time as you do today, but instead of having Saturdays off we went Saturday morning and did, not go Monday.

During the morning we had all our academic courses and every day we had physical education in the afternoon, along with activities and proctored study halls. When we disobeyed a rule, such as the one banning the use of lipstick, we would receive a demerit and when we received two or more we had to stay after school on Saturdays and do somejob to help the custodians.

For our social life, we went to Williston for a tea every Saturday afternoon-30 girls would go each Saturday, so we had to go only once a month. But many times, if you didn't want to go, you could ask a girl who had a boyfriend there to take your place.

Mrs.

The year of 1967 through 1968 at Northampton School for Girls is just as exciting, if not more so, than the "good old days." We have a great variety of courses ranging from calculus to advanced placement English to ancient history. Classes last from 8:15 in the morning to 2:15 in the afternoon, with forty-five minutes off for lunch at the school. The academic day is followed by a conference period when girls can confer with their teachers and by activity periods in which girls can participate in clubs, study,go downtown or just sit and talk.

Although -demerits have recently been abandoned for our misdemeanors, such as skipping study hall or going downtown without permission, we girls are punished by our fellow students who are on Judiciary Board.

For our social life, we have dances on many Saturday evenings with neighboring boys' schools. The boarders are allowed to entertain dates on Saturday and Sunday. This year the seniors have begun going to a Humanities lecture at Williston eadi Thursday, for which everyone spends an hour beforehand getting ready.

WORK

NORTHAMPTON SCHOOL FOR GIRLS

NORTHAMPTON, MASSACHUSETTS

Dear Seniors,

Congratulations! Nothing gives a headmaster more heartwarming pleasure than to salute a senior class at the time of their graduation. It is true, if not original, to say that this is truly a commencement - a beginning - rather than the end of something. At the same time, you deserve great credit and recognition for what you have accomplished in your preparation for what lies ahead.

First, of course, you have passed the scholastic fitness tests. You have demonstrated in intellectual disciplines a competence of which you can be proud. Even more important in terms of your life goals, you have in these early years of relative maturity come to know yourselves. You have, in the microcosm of society that school represents, experienced many of the choices that you will have to make in times to come. You have discovered strengths to foster and weaknesses to guard against, in yourself and in your associates. As a result, you are in a better position now to determine the directions of your separate lives than you have ever been before.

Don't forget how much your choices will mean to others in the years ahead. What you do in college will be of great importance to you and to your families, it will also have a direct bearing on those from your school who may want to follow you.

I wish you well, and I hope we shall always keep in touch.
