HOME Gabriela Samper
Home for me is not a tangible place, it is the state in which we can be our true selves no matter the space or the companionship, it is the feeling of being comfortable and at ease with every possible thing that can affect our mood, and it is where our most loved ones are. I decided to divide my portfolio in two parts, one that represented what meant HOME for me personally and the other part what meant home for everyone in general. This guided my investigation: What color is your home? What does home taste like? What does home smell like? How does it feel being at home? Based on these questions I chose the different materials I wanted to use in my works. Inspired by Vik Muniz I used coffee and fabric that symbolizes home (Images 1, 2, and 3). Based on Joe Web’s work I chose to create collages using pictures from magazines and responses from a survey I created (Images 5, 6, 7 and 10). Finally, I wanted to portray that home is not a static place, rather it is always changing and depends a lot on the person. With this idea, many of my works are inspired by people that I love, such as my relatives and my friends.
