LOW-RESIDENCY MFA IN CREATIVE WRITING Our MFA program treats literary arts as interdisciplinary experimentation and innovative work. We invite our students: to engage with a variety of mediums, forms, and materials; to cross between languages and genres; and to merge the creative and the theoretical. This is writing as studio art. • Our acclaimed faculty work with you to expand your creative practice to be a writer in the community. Write at home through a low residency model. • We meet our students where they want to locate within or between genres. They don’t have to choose a genre track. • Our residences are a time for reflection, creation, collaboration, and care. • Our pedagogy is progressive, and our critique ethos is relational, built upon tenets of reciprocity, respect, curiosity, and deep listening. • We don’t shy away from engagement with the real world in real time. • We delve into writing translation, whether it’s in a more traditional sense as a movement between language or as a more experimental practice. • One-on-one mentorship in which students are paired with a professional writer who offers support and guidance throughout the year. • Learn on your schedule. The low residency model allows you to create work at your own pace and develop a writing practice that fits into your life. • We exist as part of a strong artistic and writing community. • During the residencies, students engage with Portland’s thriving literary arts scene – from local presses and bookstores to events and exhibitions - and beyond.
ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT R. Stranger MFA ‘24
R. Stranger is a creative writer whose multimedia practice incorporates visual art into their written work. PNCA’s approach to writing as studio art allowed them to utilize resources across campus and connect with faculty members in different departments to develop a unique practice. They have tabled zines at PNCA’s Symposium and the Form.a Art Press Fair at Oregon Contemporary and featured work at Lightbox Photographic Gallery’s New Visionaries exhibit.
